Coffee & Fandom Community
With everything on Reddit and Tumblr continuing to be shit and their need to sell user content to AI companies, I've decided to start fanfic lemmy instance for anyone who wants to come over.
It's new, empty, and open for anyone looking for shelter or a new place to hang out that's not supported by a corporation. It is also federated for anyone who participates in the fediverse and other decentralized social media.

Hi detective
Your ocs are now flowers in a bouquet. Tell me about it/them.
I'm going to do some fast googleing on the Victorian Language of Flowers to answer this ask, but since I'm not particularly confident in my googling powers, I'm going to put the meaning I've found under each one as well. So potential... hints? of spoilers? beneath the cut :D
From Fey Touched there's...
Lizzy Hail: Brugmansia aka Angel's Trumpet
Vivacity, vibrancy, health, danger. The flowers which grow on the brugmansia are part of the nightshade family, meaning that they have slightly toxic properties. Because of their size and unusual shape, the angel's trumpet represents vivacity and vibrancy.
Booker Reed: Queen of the Night
"Enjoy small moments because they do not last". The symbolic character of the epiphyllum is its short flowering time, therefore, people commonly used the blooming epiphyllum as a metaphor for how good things don't last. On the other hand, because of this rarity, it's also a sign of luckiness for those who see its bloom.
Andric Roche: Protea
The primary symbolic meanings of the protea flower are strength, courage, and resilience since the plant survives in extreme climate conditions. Proteas also symbolize diversity, due to the hundreds of variations in color and shape found within their genus.
Cara Evelyn: Pansy
"Thoughtfulness, remembrance, you occupy my thoughts". Pansy flowers are known to symbolize several things, including love, affection, free thinking, and happiness. The pansy's heart-shaped petals and bright, bold colors are often associated with love and affection, and the flower is often given as a gift to express these sentiments.
Mia Harris: Morning Glory
"Love in vain; affection". Morning glories have symbolized love that was never returned, but have also been seen as a sign of undying love.
Nameer Khatri: Violets
Violets signify wisdom, loyalty, hope, and faithfulness. Giving someone a violet let's them know that you'll always be there for them.
From The Stolen Stories there's...
Stella Korazon: Aster
In Victorian culture, the aster represents daintiness, patience, and charm. Aster meanings include love and wisdom. With a rich history in Greek mythology, it’s said that the aster was created by the tears of the Greek goddess, Astraea. One day, she was so upset by how few stars there were in the dark sky, that she began to cry. As she wept, her tears fell to the ground and turned into star-shaped aster flowers. Thus, the flower was named after her, with aster meaning star.
Reilly Mosswolf: Sunflowers
Sunflowers symbolise loyalty, adoration, a long life and lasting happiness, also good fortune and positive opportunities. Sunflowers symbolize unwavering faith and unconditional love.
Eryn Mosswolf: Purple Hyacinth
Purple hyacinths can symbolize multiple things, including sorrow and a desire for forgiveness. The fragrant purple blooms could be a way to let others know you're thinking about them after a death in the family.
Dara Brookor: Zinnia
While zinnia has many different meanings, it is usually associated with friendship, endurance, daily remembrance, goodness, and lasting affection. Zinnias are one tough bloom! Zinnias also symbolize a “joyous endurance.” They are happy to bloom in the steaming heat of summer and really any other trials it encounters, such as drought and bugs, yet they never fail to produce vibrant, beautiful blooms!
Tanar Orinan: Gladiolus
The gladiolus flower typically symbolizes honor and remembrance, but it has many other meanings too such as: Strength of character. Faithfulness, sincerity, and integrity.
Myris Orinan: Blue Daisy
Blue daises have a meaning of long-term loyalty and trust so you can send them to a friend, a long-term partner or a family member who you care very much for. These daisies are pretty rare to find but not impossible.
Nillion Kurez: Dahlia
Finding inner strength, graceful, dignity and commitment. Also embracing positive changes. Some colours of Dahlia display negative connotations including instability or dishonesty. Dahlia make good gifts for someone you admire or percieve as a strong person.
Indre Larieth: Rhododendron
Victorians sent the flower as a warning or with the meaning of ‘beware.’ It was commonly used to indicate that you were worried someone was making the wrong choice, especially when dealing with potential romantic partners.
Lauralai Morten: Cypress
Signifies death, mourning, and despair. In the language of flowers, cypress flowers may also stand for eternal love, memories of past love, or even unrequited love in vain.
Disclaimer: Answered August 10th. Scheduled for September 2nd

Ok i love your writing so I keep coming back lmao and I just gotta get this off my chest
It irritates me sometimes when people write Peter as someone who needs to be pushed into realizing he likes something in a way that makes him so unsure of himself and therefore very malleable(?) and is then shaped by other characters. I read a few fics recently that had other chars reveal to him that he was Bi cause it's obvious to them, and in response he became so unsure of himself and his relationships and that doesn't feel like him at all
My opinion is in such a situation he absolutely would have lashed out or put up walls and maybe he would reexamine himself in private and reason out what he felt, but at no point would he be so vulnerable with people that he became a blushing virgin insecure in his own sexuality
Sorry for ranting, I just feel like you might get it
I am like a confession booth for Peter Parker being written poorly by fanon and I accept this role gladly. I too, enjoy complaining.
It's really such a shame to see Peter written as "malleable" especially in relation to his sexuality. I think sexuality, especially bi-sexuality, being written as something that is "shaped" by the people around you denies him agency and also a lot of room for character work. If I'm writing a Peter who is struggling with his bi-sexuality, it's not because he isn't aware of it, but because he's not ready to accept it. I think ultimately it's the problem of agency - Peter being written without agency and just being a sort of vessel to be fucked and positioned by the people around him is such a hollow approach to who he is as a character, I think.
As you said, Peter usually deals with his problems by himself. He's the definition of "I'm not asking you for help" and I do think that would follow in line with his sexuality and people's opinions on it. I see you, I hear you, thank you for sharing with the circle.

I've been ia for a while because of how lowkey hostile this community has become lately, and I will probably continue to be so until there's a proper resolution, whatever it may be. However, I've seen some stuff that has been said by some of the ex qsmp admins in the midst of them recounting their experiences that I cannot help but be greatly bothered by, and, as a non english speaker, is important for me to say.
The way that they have been bashing quackity for making statements in spanish, his native language, and for streaming in the time zone he lives in, is not okay. I've said in another post about how disgusting I think these kind of comments are, and being an affected party in the admin situation does not make you an exception in my opinion.
The admins have every right to talk about what they went through, their feelings are valid and they absolutely deserve compensation for their work, because they were treated horribly, there's no doubt about that, but they are not immune to criticism, especially if it's about casual xenophobia. This does not stop at lèa's interview, as lumi also didn't have a spanish translation for her document, something that prior to the interview, I didn't think about too much, but now, I can't stop thinking about. Mind you, when it comes to xenophobia, there is absolutely no denying what the french and brazillian communties went through, but you do not fight xenophobia with xenophobia.
I completely understand that it's not easy to be the one to speak about any type of abuse they suffered, I said before that because of how shitty this situation is, that all sides would make mistakes and choices that people would not like, and for me this is one of them. As stressful as it must be for them, the ex admins have a lot of eyes on them right now, and saying these kind of things have consequences; I have seen way too much xenophobia towards the hispanic community and it's actively horrible to see because, unlike other times, the other communities are seemingly ignoring it. A twitter post saying that you do not condone harrasment does not erase what you publicly said previously.
I'm gonna be honest there's more that I did not like about that interview, the way that lèa talked about the admins that are still on the team, her response to the fact that she leaks stuff... I just... didn't like it, but I wanted to talk about the whole "quackity spoke spanish" thing because it's something that I feel really strongly about. It is NOT easy to make any statements in a language that you do not natevely speak, let alone very important ones, no matter how good you are at it, to write all of this it took me two hours and I probably still made mistakes or misspoke somewhere.
I do not how to end this post, I'm just frustrated that this fandom now goes at each other throats at littlest things without question or critical thinking and that xenophobia is now so normalized. I just... expected better I guess

On sock puppets, pen names and Freydis Moon
First, lets talk about the difference between a pen name and a sock puppet becauese lots of authors use pen names. This includes me.
I use two names- Uncle Vlad is for my games and erotic short stories on itch. I do not intend to take this name off of itch or Tumblr. I will publish Sword of the Voivode under T.G. Joye. This is mostly because my legal name is used by several entities to publish other work already, and I don't want to be mixed up with unrelated works that are not my own.
Sock puppets are almost exclusively online handles used to harass and manipulate people. Freydis used both- sock puppet accounts often tended to also be pen names for other styles of writing.
While neither of these things is a crime per se, some of those alternate personas engaged in digital brown face. While also not a crime per se, it is in very poor taste.
Here's where things get absolutely FUCKED-
Freydis is an award winning latinex author who is; by all accounts, not a latinex person. Freydis also engaged heavily in multiple forms of bullying, which I have been on the recieving end myself. This bullying largely targeted minorities who are underrepresented in fiction- allowing Freydis to boost themselves as a supposedly marginalized author as they harrassed many trans, non binary, and people of color out of publishing own ownvoices work.
I've seen the effects of Freydis's predatory behavior first hand on transmasculine writers- many were afraid to leave their sphere of influence after becoming attached to Freydis, in spite of the bad behavior. Many more were harrassed off of various platforms- like Discord and Twitter- cutting them off from a small but tight knit community.
I am one of those people who was harassed off of Twitter, and have not made any inroads into the digital writing community b/c I feared backlash from Freydis. I've spent the last two years trying to figure out what I was going to do once I released Sword of the Voivode. While not erotica, I still felt fear to publish on Amazon due to Freydis's past harassment. It is a miracle the book has come this far in the process and I will be publishing it later this year.
Many, many more people were manipulated into believing Freydis with an unwavering, cult-like fervor, making it impossible to even have a conversation about years of abuse and manipulation going on behind the scenes.
The Takeaway-
We need to be better to one another, both by being more supportive of those within our own communities and by questioning our loyalty to any one person. We talk about believing victims, but never in the context of bullying and I think that has to change here and now.
We also need to boost each other like there's no tomorrow. Many ownvoices works have been left languishing in obscurity because Freydis took up so much space in multiple minority communties. Boost those books you felt unsafe to do so before. Boost your own. We need to lift each other up and engage with one another more readily to really undo the hurt done to us.
Be safe, and be kind to one another,
-Your Uncle Vlad.

Hi, I looked through your recent posts about north and south to try and see if you had posted about your specific topic but couldn’t find it and didn’t want to risk serious spoilers. I’d love to know what exactly you’re writing on and what your perspective/research question is so I can keep that in mind while reading and ask some informed/related questions.
Hi!! I'm really sorry it took me this long to answer.
One way of explaining it would be this:
It is often jokingly said that North and South is "Pride and Prejudice for Socialists" and "Pride and Prejudice and Labor Disputes", which is a funny joke, but of course not entirely accurate -Gaskell is by no means writing Austen pastiche, and definitely a whole lot of people lured in by this description are shocked and put off by the novel when they find it doesn't have the lightness, satire and quick wit of P&P.
Gaskell is often presented within the "authors to read next" once one has finished Austen, and that is on first approach, a rather strange thing, because they are very different in pretty significant ways. Where Austen writes satire and comedy, Gaskell writes heartfelt, sometimes sentimental drama. Rarely someone dies in an Austen; rarely no one dies in a Gaskell. Courtship is central to Austen; parent-child relationships are central to Gaskell. Austen writes contemporary pieces; most of Gaskell's work is historical. Austen writes mainly from the gentry space, Gaskell from the professional middle-class space. Even when they coincide in the confidentiality of their prose, Austen is more like the friend with the latest gossip, and Gaskell more like an old aunt telling old-life stories by the fire. And yet, there is something to the connection. They certainly feel closer to each other as storytellers than, for example, how Gaskell's work compares to Dickens or Charlotte Brontë, which were authors she personally knew and interacted with.
My intuition is that the similarity or connection people see is through the ethical world their works seem to inhabit. Austen has been described as an Aristotelian more than once; Aristotelian philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre dedicated most of a chapter in his After Virtue (a well known text to anyone who has studied ethics in a philosophy school or as part of a philosophy degree) to argue that she is one of the last representatives of the Aristotelian tradition of the virtues. In very summarized summary, through an ideal image of the accomplished gentleman or the accomplished lady, Austen draws the picture of virtues as habits that make a person better and make that person more fully human. Honesty, generosity, patience, prudence, justice, wisdom, are not theoretical imperatives but lived modes of being in Austen. In that sense one can say that Austen is ethical. She focuses on personal character and growth.
Gaskell has that line in the background, but seems most interested in community dynamics as mediated by friendship, and to friendship Aristotle dedicates two full books (chapters) of his ten-book Nicomachean Ethics; friendship is central and essential to the Aristotelian understanding not only of ethics but of politics (and ethics and politics are to him a continuum strongly connected by justice). Again, too long to explain and I don't want to bore anyone XD but for Aristotle a flourishing human community is one where the citizens are friends -that is, people that strive to better themselves and promote the common good by associating with each other to pursue these goals. Aristotle also has an extended notion of friendship; what we call "friendships of convenience" and think of as false friendships, he thinks are legitimate if partial forms of friendship, structured around pleasure or utility.
My original goal was to present this Austen-Gaskell continuity and defend the idea that Gaskell's work represents an Aristotelian understanding of ethics-politics through the way it draws communties and relationships within those communities, and the sketched solutions she presents to community problems. I wanted to maybe make a comparison between the more detailed perspective of N&S, and then discuss the idealized community in Cranford, the community in crisis in My Lady Ludlow, and the vicious community in Lois the Witch. Alas, my advisor, a reasonable person, said I'd have enough with just N&S and deep down I know he's right XD
Hope that explains it (?) and please feel free to reach out again!
I have been asked about it before here, and I told it a different way there.

Gather 'Round the Trashfires Episode 13
Episode 13: Interlude: Sweet Dreams
Spotify Youtube RedCircle (Hosting Platform) Also available on your podcasting platform of choice. If it isn't, let me know and I'll work on getting it added. The cohort work on next steps toward their goals against their enemies and taking care of their loved ones. Even when sleeping, there's no true rest for a Renegade in hiding. This is a shorter episode than normal, but something possessed my ST to allow us to do a lot more downtime than usual that week (including allowing Geri 4 Astral Travel dreams) so it was more than would reasonably fit with the next session. I remember once on tumblr encountering a post that said something alone the lines of "STOP PUTTING X MALE IN A DRESS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WRITE THEM IN A QUEER RELATIONSHIP," and in that moment I deleted all my writing wips which had done just that and it's only years later how much damage that did to me.
I am a cis woman, however for a long time I was a girl who was not sure if she was, I was a girl who for many years who wished she was a boy both because of the changes my body was undergoing due to puberty and my awakening sexuality for my own sex instead of just the opposite. I reached a point where I wanted to explore my feminity while I was struggling with my identity, with my sexuality, and I had just started to explore my femininity using a character who at the time was a comfort for me. This post put all that to a halt. I took it to heart, by being told I wasn't allowed to explore the indentity, I couldn't explore it for myself.
And this post wasn't made to harm me. In fact, the person who made it was trying to protect gay men from being fetishized by fandom. But in doing so, they were trying to force people to only accept gay men as traditionally masculine, which does more harm than good.
I'm writing this because I'm seeing these posts rising once again, with people who think they're doing good but are actually doing more harm than intended. We should inform communities of the harm they can do, but we shouldn't do it in a way that ends up hurting the communties they were trying to protect.

Hi detective
For storyday, tell me about the most normal story you've ever written and the most outlandish. According to you, I mean.
Hello Sleepy <3
You have always have the best questions!
Most of my stories are outlandish in some way because that's the fascination of Fantasy writing to me, but for my most normal story I'm going to go way back to the first story I ever remember writing to completion.
I would have been.... oh... 9 or 10 years old and it was for a school project. We were only allowed one A4 sheet of paper, and I ended up using two (Forshadowing for my over-writing tendancies, and my love of 150k novels :D) but it was called "Rosie the Rabbit Goes on an Adventure" and it was about a Rabbit that escaped her run in the garden and, well. It's in the title. I think I had her cross a road and escape into a nearby field but I don't actually remember for certain.
As for my most outlandish...
This feels tougher to answer because while Fantasy is by it's nature outlandish, that kind of makes me feel like none of my works particularly are, within the context of a fantasy world lol. Possibly, I feel my most outlandish, was a childrens book I wrote as a Birth-Day gift to my best friend for her new daughter. (@faelanvance I'm talking about it again <3)
I took the basic premise of "An Ugly Duckling", where an animal grows up believing it's different and later finds out that what they thought made them different is actually perfectly normal in a different setting. And then I combined it with an Icelandic legend I found of a "Fire Fox". The firefox is a black furred fox and, legend has it, when it runs across the ice and snow it's tail sends up sparks which create the aurora borealis.
I enjoyed combining a classic fable with an obscure (to me, I don't know how obscure it is in Iceland!) legend, and it's created a little 50-page childrens story that feels different and fresh and... a bit outlandish, I guess :D
It contains enough "surprising-to-the-characters" magic and fantasy to feel a bit outlandish in the context of a childrens book, where magic and fantasy tend to be assumed as a normal part of the fictional world.

I really can't stand the whole "written/drawn csem isn't nearly as bad as child pornography, cause a real child is being harmed in the one while the later isn't, so why do you keep rallying against it!" argument. Like what you fucking morons don't get is that written/drawn csem is still a sort of reinforcement of pedophilia in the larger culture that does little to protect children, neither granting them nor protecting their sense of humanity. It's part of the manure in the grand scheme of fertilizing that kind of shit, its not even remotely hard to fucking grasp.
Just because it's not harming a specific child, doesnt mean it doesnt serve to still harm children; both socially, by normalizing the sexualization of children AND literally, as a tool to groom children. And yes, it is grooming material because the amount of fucking people I know who were kids writing, drawing, and participating in hypersexual discussion and communties with and sometimes for adults, with these adults fully aware that they were children in fan spaces and other online communities is alarming a number and it's sickening. Not to mention I've literally seen minors even now defend pedophilic fandom material who's mutuals or friends are nothing but fucking adults, that shit is vile madness.

(PS: THIS IS NOT ABT OSC TUMBLR RAREPAIR SHIPPERS! YOUR ALL AMAZING<3(FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN)
BREAKING MY SILENCE, I CANNOT STAND 90% OF OSC RAREPAIRS DUE TO CERTAIN SHIPPERS
LIKE WOW I GET  IT YOUR SO SPECIAL AND UNIQUE FOR SHIPPING THE CHARACTERS WHO INTERACTED FOR 10 SECONDS
AND THE THING IS I LOVE RAREPAIRS, I've been making up ships for rewrites/au's for a long time
BUT THE LEVEL OF ELITISM THAT RADITES FROM SOME PEOPLE IN THIS SPECIFIC COMMUNITY IS INSANE
Dgmw, it did exist in the communties I was in before but it was much lighter? It didn't feel as extreme as it did in the osc
ON A PERSONAL NOTE, I understand feeling discmofort abt a thing and wanting to rant about said thing/make posts about it in a negativie light, I understand making a few jabs at the other ships here and there
BUT WHEN PEOPLE MAKE 20 SOMETHING POSTS ABOUT HOW MUCH THEY HATE A SHIP AND ALL THOSE POSTS BOIL DOWN TO THE EXACT SAME THING, I'm starting to think there's a issue there
Like Wow we get it you dislike a popular ship! Your so quriky and unique, you like the unpopular alternative, GOOD FUCKING JOB HAVE A GOLD STAR
And then these people rant about getting hate from the shippers of popular ships, like I'm sorry "Eraser's sweaty armpits" prefers to ship things that have a lot of canon content for them
I have seen Around the same amount of "popular/rarepair bad on both sides od the specturm" albiet it feels like I only seem to get posts from rarepair shippers talking about how mistreated they are by the fandom
(On a sidenote, I don't personally care if a ship is popular or not(imo that's a shallow reason to ship a ship))
So many rarepair shippers on those apps seem to act like their some opressed miniority for dare shipping 2 characters who didn't even speak, that their not some stupid sheeple because they like UNPOPULAR THINGS
Honestly some of them are more insufferable then those "MEAN" and "HORRIBLE" popular ship shippers
(NOW IF YOUR ON OSC TUMBLR(OR mostly only use osc tumblr) That's another story! All of you are so sweet and your dynamics are all fun and adorble! Keep on making content! You all made me rediscover my love for osc rarepairs :)!)
(Sorry for the bad grammer it's litterally 1 am I am not grammer checking this for a 5th time, I don't know what possesed me to write this monstrosity)
.
