I have a deep love for Kriselle, one that has completely different reasons from why I like ships such as Krusie and Suselle (or all three of them).

And a lot of it boils down to Kris’ gender identity as well as Noelle’s sexuality- obviously I don’t just like their relationship in a romantic context because of its explicit queerness, but more so because of how that impacts the way their relationship is perceived on a bigger scale.

Within the argument of Kris’ gender and how many people suggest they’re a boy, this further strips them of their identity. This is important because identity and freedom are key themes of the game. To take away from Kris being nonbinary and project your idea of gender onto them goes entirely against the themes of the game and Kris’ character altogether.

Now where does Kriselle come in? Many people in the fandom ship Kriselle under the assumption that Kris is a man. This inadvertently (sometimes it isn’t) erases Noelle’s queerness as well, putting them in a heteronormative relationship despite Noelle being a lesbian and Kris being nonbinary. Not only does this (once again) go directly against the point of the game, but also shows how the player’s control over Kris extends past them and is now even latched onto Noelle.

We can also see this with the thorn ring, which could be considered a marriage related theme. Especially when you think of how the player might see them— putting Kris in this more “masculine, dominant, controlling” role and Noelle in the “traditionally feminine, submissive, pushed around” role. Its a blueprint for a very toxic relationship which neither of them want but are placed there by YOU, the player.

I may just make an entirely separate post going over all the things I love about Deltarune all on its own since I don’t want to make this post too long. I may make tarot cards for the game, I’m unsure yet.

Also note that I don’t like their relationship in this context because they should be together, I like their relationship because of how complex it is. I’m not romanticizing this idea of them 😓
