I’m a found family hoe

Okay I have an unpopular Nimona opinion, here goes: Nimona & Ballister in the movie do not have a father/daughter dynamic, and I think it takes away from their actual dynamic in the movie to force them into that mold.

Don't get me wrong, I looooove their found family dynamics in both the comic and the movie! And I agree that the comic versions of Nimona & Ballister have something a lot closer to that dynamic. But the thing about comic!Ballister is that he's like, 40 years old. He's an adult with an established decades-long career, he's cynical and world-weary, he's lost all hope of things ever getting better for him. Nimona changes his life because she's the first person he's allowed himself to care for in a long, long time. ND Stevenson did the "Grumpy Middle-Aged Man Reluctantly Becomes Adoptive Father" trope years before it was cool.

But movie!Bal is like, 22! He just graduated, he's bright-eyed and optimistic and trusts authority and loves his boyfriend. The whole movie is about him starting out from an immature and naive understanding of the world and figuring out who he is and what he believes in and who he wants to be. It's practically a coming-of-age story for him, and I'm only half joking when I say that. He and Nimona work more like equal partners than boss and minion; for a lot of the movie, SHE'S the one teaching HIM. I've mentioned the timeline difference and the respective ages, but it's not really just an age thing, it's about where he is in his life. I do actually know people in their early 20s who are already having kids and are perfectly happy and capable, and it's not like Ballister isn't an adult, but he also still has a lot of growing up to do, you know? It just genuinely does not feel like he's at a place where he's ready to be a parent in any capacity, or that that's the role she wants to have in his life.

So, yeah. If I you put a gun to my head to label it with a ""real"" family dynamic, I would say it's a lot more like they're adopting each other as siblings. But even that is kind of missing the point, because the beauty of queer found family is that it doesn't need to fit any predetermined role or nuclear family dynamic pushed by society. He's her bestie, he's her chosen family, he's the first person to have seen her and accepted her for who she is, but he's not her dad.

in conclusion comic!ballister would feel like adopting both nimona AND his younger movie-verse self thank you for coming to my ted talk

i'm very here for all relationship interpretations of movieverse's ballister and nimona. i think they are extremely found family, but to me they don't have to fit into any labels or father-daughter or even siblings. they're close to each other in ways that transcend traditional family labels. they teach each other different things over the course of the movie, but i agree it's more nimona teaching bal rather than the other way around.
