He likes using his Incubus magic around you, loving how your eyes widen in awe when he changes shape. Or how you learn to copy some of his magic to change clothes and makeup at your command. There is jealously and resentment, it is Hell. But Raphael has it written in all his contracts you are not to be harmed and every Debtor in his collection knows better than to do or say anything remotley insulting in your presence. You are unaware of this, Raphael never mentions it and his Staff is to afraid to ask. If it ever is brought up he simply says you are his to torture. Though he only ever brings you bliss.

With free Reign of the House of Hope you often wander in and out of the Rooms you know are safe. Raphaels domain is practically your second home. You walk through the Ballrooms which always seem to have Music, Explore his endless libraries to gain forbiden knowledge, Paint in his Art Room, Play instruments in his Music Room, Spar in his Training Room, Peak into his private offices to see what he's working on, and Slip in and out of his Entertainment rooms. You tend to stray from his bedroom unless you're in the mood as once you pass that threshold it becomes a long night of passion. The guest room you claim in his Home always mysteriously disappears whenever Raphael wants to be intimate with you.

As a Cambion he enjoys scratching and marking what is his. Leaving his presence on your skin through various means. Your neck is often covered in hickies and love bites showing his ownership of you. listen. I'm banging my fist on the table. Aku/Scaramouche. Why isn't this a THING. Why after digging halfway to hell into the tumblr tags have I only seen two people total shipping Aku/Scaramouche. It is RIGHT THERE.

Scaramouche bases like 50% of his identity around being Aku's #1 specialest little guy. He's called Aku often enough to have memorized both his phone number and the unique tune the buttons make when he dials the number. He crossed half the damn planet AS A HEAD to give Aku some good news as fast as possible. He's known Aku long enough to make it to #1, so he must know how often Aku breaks his bargains—even with people that handed him Jack on a silver platter—but he's unflaggingly confident that Aku will happily pay off Scaramouche's debts as a reward. He's just as confident that the guy who instantly eye-lasers anyone that displeases him will be thrilled to chat after Scaramouche breaks into Aku's locked down castle.

And Aku IS willing to listen and DOESN'T kill Scaramouche for breaking in. He gives Scaramouche a new body—as far as I can recall, the ONLY on-screen example of Aku rewarding an underling in the entire show. He's willing to do a stupid victory dance with Scaramouche. He brings Scaramouche along to gloat at Jack (altho it didn't end well RIP Scaramouche The Merciless you'll be missed). He gave Scaramouche his number in the first place—possibly during the span of time when he's so depressed he'll hardly get out of bed, much less talk to anyone. Aku even accepts collect calls from him.

And there's SO many ways you can write it.

Are you into "villain and his most loyal henchman"? Boom. You've got it.

"Godlike figure and the little person who (figuratively or literally) worships him"? Boom. You can effortlessly spin it that way.

"Murderous remorseless evil power couple that mocks the good guys together"? Boom.

"Creepy dark doom guy who radiates grumpiness and his ball of radioactive sunshine and optimism"? Boom.

"The one guy who can get away with shoving his way into the misanthrope's life without being sent packing"? Boom.

"Guy who looks dark and scary but when Jack isn't stalking him is a font of unhinged evil glee and guy who looks fun-loving and cheerful but is also a font of unhinged evil glee."

"The Statler and Waldorf at any group social function if Statler and Waldorf really liked slaughtering whole towns and mistakenly assumed they were the two coolest guys in the room."

My personal preferred way to interpret them—you're getting my headcanon now, I'm holding back the general Scaramouche headcanons and sticking to the ones relevant to the ship—I think Scaramouche's model is the next-gen upgraded version of the X-model line. The X-49 experiment proved that giving robots emotions made them better at killing and helped them survive longer so they can kill more. So, give them all emotions. Make a couple of tweaks: you don't want them doubting their jobs or understanding right from wrong, so don't give them consciences or the capacity for remorse, let 'em have fun killing while keeping the rage and self-preservation that made X-49 so successful. And rabid loyalty to one living being seems like a great way to motivate them, but we don't want any more robots dragging home stray dogs. Program them for loyalty to Aku.

So here we've got a bot who has an entire whole personality of his own—dude probably dresses himself, he has very strong opinions on Jack's hair, and I'm sure Aku's not the one who went "you know what would make this assassin unstoppable? the flute"—and yet, and yet, the core of his existence is obsessive devotion to Aku. Everything's about Aku, everything's for Aku, he kills for Aku, he travels the world for Aku, he sings and dances for Aku, he breaks Aku's commands for Aku. All he wants to do is everything Aku could possibly want him to do. And he must be succeeding because he's Aku's #1 assassin.

When Scaramouche is slaughtering a whole town just to lure Jack out so he can kill him, Aku is telling his scientists he's given up on sending anyone to kill Jack and pretending he doesn't even care anymore—and that must mean Aku didn't send Scaramouche after Jack, Scaramouche decided on his own that that's his target. It's not like he needs to impress Aku—not THAT much anyway—he's already #1. He's trying to figure out what will make his depressed-as-hell boss finally happy. He's calling Aku as often as he can get away with, to hear his voice, to make sure Aku approves, to ask what now, what can I do for you next.

Eventually, ultimately, if you wait long enough and dig deep enough, his every thought revolves around Aku. It's what he's programmed for, after all. He worships Aku. He wants Aku. He loves Aku.

... Scaramouche you weren't programmed to feel loyalty that way. Scar. Scaramouche what are you doing. None of the other bots in Scaramouche's line did this. (Which is good, because if he thought that a bunch of bots with the potential to be just as competent & useful as him were his rivals, he might just destroy them all.) These emotion chips are wild, the second you flip them on they start adapting and changing and it's impossible to predict how they'll affect a bot's personality. Maybe a bot will decide purple overcoats are cool and fall in love with his boss. You never know. Well... whatever's going on in his head, it seems to be effective. He is Aku's #1 assassin.

For Aku's part? If the show's plot had gone a little bit differently and he didn't blow up anybody's head and they'd both lived long enough for Aku to find all this out himself?

How rare must it be for anyone to want him?

Not his massive store of riches—him. Not a piece of his political power—him. Not offers from him of cushier jobs or better bounties—him. Not his protection as an indestructible shapeshifter—him. Not his favor, a village spared, a prisoner freed—him.

Him—and not in spite of the billion red flags, but heedless of them. Him—with no fear of the potential consequences that come from being so close to him, the greater risk of misstepping and ending up in the Pit of Hate or worse—not because his suitor arrogantly thinks himself immune to those risks (well—maybe a little bit), but because anything he can get before that last mistake would make it all worth it. Him—not because this suitor imagines some secret better nature hiding inside of Aku, but because of what Aku clearly is on the outside—even when he's feeling at his worst and most pathetic—because Scaramouche is devoted to Aku the way he is, because he must be devoted to Aku the way he is, however he is.

The fact that it's programmed doesn't make it any less sincere. And anyway, it was never meant to be programmed like that—from the default code, this arose naturally.

And Aku may have been pursued a few times in the past, primarily for political alliances and the like, but he's never been wanted like THIS before: with the steely-opticked determination of an unstoppable killing machine.

And this demon, this monster, this tree-ogre, who sees children celebrating his would-be murderer and—instead of punishing them or even telling them made-up stories about how good is lame and evil will always win in the end—tries pathetically to convince the children that he's the hero protecting them, tries to steal that hero-worship for himself...

It's possible Aku may have never noticed how awful it feels to be eternally, universally unwanted... until he's wanted for the first time.

And once he feels it, once he's convinced it's real, he'll crave it with all the avarice with which he ever hungered for the rest of the world's vast treasures.

Okay so i hope you don’t mind this rambling, but i’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while and since i have no friends that like resident evil i decided to ask you if you don’t mind. Since i only got into the games and the fandom a few years ago, i played the remake version of RE4 before the og one unlike much of the fandom. I recently played the original game and while i agree with many points made about how they made Luis so much better in the remake, didn’t they also make him more of a stereotype in a way? With this i mean that despite making him more fleshed out with things like his past as a biologist for umbrella or how his grandfather died and his connection to the village there are also many other things they added that do make him more of a stereotypical sexy spanish man. Like how they changed his appereance to be tanner and wild and scruffy, how he seems much more untrustworhty and sly looking and he even dances flamenco (or something similar enough) in the dlc with Ada. Now i hope this doesn’t seem as if i’m mad he haves tanned skin in the remake, i’m spanish and we have many different skin tones here, he’s perfectly someone i could find walking on the street; also his voice actor is spanish and did a very good job. But many of the details added do make him seem more like that, i know in the og game Luis was still a bit of that stereotype given he was also a smooth talking flirty pretty boy, but in the remake he’s been straight up sexualized. Even the fandom sexualizes him a lot, and i get he’s very attractive, i like him a lot too but still. Sorry if this was too long or if i made it seem worse than i think it is, i don’t really mind much and he’s even become a comfort character for me but there's something that bugs me and i don't know why

I wanna preface by saying that if it bothers you, that is perfectly understandable, and I would never try to convince you that you're wrong for feeling that way. (the only thing here idk if I agree with is the sexualisation aspect - I do not recall a moment where Luis was reduced to his body or sex appeal, but I am more than willing to hear you out about it and change my mind).

I think the difference between Luis behaving in a stereotypical way, versus being nothing but a stereotype, is the way he is so fleshed out in the remake. He is eccentric, flirtatious, and hot, but that's not all he is. In the original, that pretty much summed up his character, but in the remake, he has an actual personality, and he has fears, wants, goals, and flaws. We also learn, especially in Separate Ways, that his flirtatious and whimsical nature is an attempt to distract from the deep sadness and guilt that he feels all of the time. He has a breakdown in front of Ada over the laboratory fire because that's how he watched his grandfather died. He blames himself for everything that happened to Leon, and Ashley, and Ada, and the entire village he used to call home. He's hurting, he's scared, and he's so lonely - and so when he finds people who not only need his help but that he knows he can help, he puts on the act of the chivalrous and flirtatious funny guy. His response to his trauma was not to become hardened and moody like Leon, but to play the act of brave and dashing knight (inspired by his love of Don Quixote) who everyone would love and trust - I also think it's why he tries overmuch with Leon versus with Ada, because Leon doesn't like him at all when they first meet, whereas Ada at least humours him. And dancing the Flamenco was, I believe, his way of channelling his anxieties in a way that is familiar to him. So while he does behave in ways that are stereotypical, we have more narrative explanation of why that is, we have more facets of his personality that explain why he does the things he does, and we have a range of emotions from him beyond the flirtatious and witty act he puts up.

Now all of that being said, these are "watsonian" explanations for your question. From the perspective of reality, however, Capcom has a longstanding history of misogyny, racism, xenophobia, and pretty much any kind of bigotry you can think of. And they have proven even still that they are incapable of not conveying that in everything they make. While I do think Luis is an incredibly well written character in the remake, I do also see how capcom recycled the stereotypes they used in the first place and fleshed him out in order to 'excuse' those stereotypes. I do see how, despite the obvious research they put into the remake, especially compared to the original, they fell short in representing Spanish culture outside of a storytelling device or comedic relief.

These kinds of conversations are good and important to have, both because it means we do not let capcom get away with things, but also that we all make sure to always be thinking about multiple perspectives and responses to the representation in these games. And I just enjoy this kind of thing in general, I'm always down for changing my own perspective or opinion on things like this, so thank you for opening this conversation with me. I think ultimately there are a plethora of ways to interpret Luis's character, as well as ways to feel about how he was portrayed, and you can absolutely enjoy him as a character/appreciate aspects of his story but still feel uncomfortable or put off by other things <3

why do you find dark gray so compelling?

a couple of reasons, really.

To be honest? Nostalgia. I am a Black woman and there was very sparing Black girl rep when I was a kid, least of all as an endgame romantic lead (and even if they didn't pan out in canon) I had wanted Danny and Valerie to end up together. Add that to the fact that I was just entering into my Toxic Anime Romance phase of girlhood I saw the Evil-But-Hot-Future-Version of Danny and I was like "YEP." I've been a Problematic Ship Girlie™ since Day 1. I'm not new to this I'm true to this lol.

I like Interesting™ ship dynamics. This doesn't mean that its only toxic ships, but like they have to grow into each other for me to care about them. I like ships where it's not so much that they change *for* each other but they change each other you know? Whether for good or for ill is less important (to me) than if its interesting.

Picking up from points one and two: I am a firm believer that catharsis is not just for Good Emotions™ sometimes you have to interact or make art that's like "Damn, (is that/would that be) fucked up or what?" Art gives us a safe place to explore upsetting concepts with full control to engage or not engage with it. If somebody is triggered by a Fucked Up Vibe™ and can't consume media that has it, they have the power to leave and not consume the media, meanwhile that same art might give a different person the space to process a triggering experience in a safe way. And sometimes your brain just likes that sort of fucked up shit y'know? its why we make horror movies.

Their Vibe is Atrocious <3 and I find it Fascinating. This ship has it all! They're both hot as adults. They have a History™. They've got an appealing contrast in color schemes. If the writers weren't so dead set on making sure that everyone and their grandma rehashed that Danny and Sam were Endgame in the show* you could have played way more into the "What Might Have Been" angle for Dark Gray, which would have been more interesting, even if it was just for that episode. It makes for an Interesting™ dynamic when one of your characters is surviving the apocalypse and one of them is the apocalypse.

Their Vibe Could Be Less Atrocious and I find that compelling. As I said before, I like stories where characters grow and change, or reveal facets that were maybe under explored in canon. Valerie's arc never got finished in the show (they did her so fucking dirty and I'll be mad about it forever), meanwhile Dan wasn't given the depth that he aught to have had in the series (though the comic has done a good bit to correct this, but then again I only consider those partly canon and [obviously] don't consider myself beholden to "canon" regardless) but this could be a chance for both characters to get the resolution canon deprived of them. It has a lot of potential for reconciliation and forgiveness. For growth. For digging into the depths of what we consider forgivable and maybe going past that. Or making the decision not to go past it. Which makes for and interesting story. When you start off with a Fucked Up Vibe™ and try to make it Less Fucked™ that requires all these Complex Emotions and Choices and I like those.

It's inherently absurd and that makes it flexible. As a Certified Enemies To Lovers Old Head™ I can say for certain that the premise is already a bit ridiculous in most settings (though there's a couple slow burns that have the progression make sense) let alone one where a Fomer-Half-Ghost-Teenager-Turned-Two-Half-Ghosts-In-A-Trenchcoat causes the apocalypse and his Ex-Girlfriend/Ghost-Hunter-Turned-Post-Apocalyptic-Freedom-Fighter would, after decades of trying to annihilate each other, agree to date. And worse than that, they're like 20 somethings who probably haven't dated anyone for real, they never had a shot at having a healthy, well-adjusted adult relationship (at least to begin with). Its kinda bonkers out the gate, taking this ship as a serious depiction of a desirable romantic partnership would be straight up goofy. But it's good tv, or something, as they say. I take the ship as seriously as I feel like, it doesn't have to be that deep unless I want it to be.

Fandom is literally just for fun. I run on the model of: tag appropriately and do whatever you want forever. And what I want is to make the blorbos from my problematic childhood niche ship kiss! Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Explanation lmao: I wouldn't say I share traits with my ocs, at least not anymore. My ocs more represent people or things I've dealt with as I grew up. Cyro was my first Undertale oc & I originally made him in middle school. Middle school Anna was depressed & angry at the world so I just loaded Cyro up with all kind of trauma. Sorry my son ToT Emma's original creation was an ideal version of myself if I was 'perfect' so she was born out of my insecurities. She is now her own character & I'd like to think she's a gray character (not purely good & not purely evil) She has made mistakes that she's not proud of & has let her emotions get the better of her.

Aabid started off as just a fun ship child with no real weight, but over the years I have made him representative of toxic/abusive spouses. It has helped me resolve some left over trauma but still keeping his fun character. I wrote him as Cyro's ex. Aabid is a caring person but only to certain people. If he can manipulate you or use you for his own gain, he will. There's more story to explain this but I'm keeping this short for now. Let me know if you want to know more.

Hey! Okay, maybe hot take, but I don’t get the crazy hype for the Mond update. Like, the archon quests there were kinda mid? Objectively? So why’s everyone freaking out now? Am I missing something?

look, let's get one thing straight - nobody's out here pretending the original Mondstadt archon quest was some masterpiece of storytelling. fuck, I've literally ranked it below Natlan's disaster of a storyline before, and that's saying something. but the idea that "old quests were mid so new content will automatically suck" is so fucking hilarious, like whaaaat. compare and contrast how dogshit Inazuma's archon quest was compared to Raiden's banger second story quest? they're capable of learning when they want to. acting like they're suddenly gonna trip over themselves just because it's Mondstadt again makes zero sense.

but here's the thing - people don't care about Mondstadt for its archon quests. what makes it special is how alive the characters feel, all the messy drama and foumnd family - this shit actually feels real, not like Natlan's forced "we're all best friends" nonsense.

and another big thing is that mond had basically all lore setups packed from day one, from evil dragons being actually the victims, to the witches, to khaenriah, to istaroth, etc. and Dragonspine events weren't just lore dumps, they were legitimately well-written stories that made Albedo's whole existential crisis actually compelling. Now this new quest looks like it's finally picking up those threads properly instead of leaving them hanging like Hoyo usually does.

yeah, nostalgia plays a role too - for a lot of people Mondstadt feels like home in a way other regions don't. not for me personally (Liyue was where the game actually started clicking), but you'd have to be blind not to see why that emotional connection matters.

so no, the hype isn't about pretending the original AQ was good - it's about finally getting the version of Mondstadt that was always possible but never fully delivered. between the character dynamics, the unresolved lore threads, and the potential to continue actually good storylines like Dragonspine's, there's plenty of legit reasons to be excited. if you can't see that, idk what to tell you.

EPIC: The Musical - Character Growth

I like it when characters aren't one-dimensional, especially main characters.

Sure, it's fine and fun to have characters who are solely evil or solely good from time to time.

But I vastly prefer characters that go thru some sort of development - that takes its time -, and then come out changed by the experience.

Enter: Odysseus and Athena (and also Eurylychous)

I think it's pretty safe to say that, at least at the start of the musical, a lot of people didn't like Athena and Eurylychous too much - and were quick to label them as, at the very least, "villain-adjecent".

But now that we have had 6 out of 8 Sagas released, we can understand them better. And same for Odysseus.

Eurylychous: In the Odyssey, he is a minor character whose only role is to be a plot device (killing and eating Helios's cattle). In EPIC, Eurylychous is shown as someone more focused on the crew than anything else. Brash and Hot-headed, he is the opposite of Odysseus.

So, why is he interesting? Because we SEE (or HEAR) how he grows from just; a soldier whose first instinct is to murder (Lotus Eaters) or flee (After blinding Polypheamus), to a desperate man who wants to get back home as fast as possible - even if it means leaving his comrades behind (Circe), to a man who needs to confess his guilt (Scylla, as a follow up to Keep Your Friends Close and Puppeteer), to someone who's desperate and has given up entirely (Mutiny and Thunder Bringer).

In conclusion: Eury isn't a villain, but Just a Man. He made mistakes and was abrasive, but so would many people in his place.

ATHENA: In Greek Mythology, Athena is one of the most Hubris-Filled (Prideful) Goddesses out there. In EPIC, she is much of the same... at the Start.

Because Remember, prior to the Wisdom Saga, we only really saw/heard Athena 3 times. And in those 3 times, we get presented with who she is at the moment; A Goddess who views Odysseus as a "project/creation" (Warrior of the Mind and Remember Them), and as the less rose-tinted Goddess who lost her friend because of the circumstances (My Goodbye).

Now, at this point in time, most people would simply label Athena as a "typical greek goddess" - that is to say, a deity who doesn't really view humans as equal to her, and who lacks Humanity.

....until she meets Telemachus.

Then, the characterization... matures; she becomes less closed-off (We'll Be Fine), admits that she was pushing too hard (Little Wolf), realizes that what she did to Ody was HORRIBLE - and, if I may interject, she will probably be a bit shocked/traumatized at seeing Ody trying to kill himself (Love in Paradise), and finally as someone who realized they STILL CARE for their friend, and that tried to do everything to save them (God Games)

In Short: Athena went from being an unlikable cold goddess - one who refused to comprehend human emotions -, to being much more "human".

(And please, if you are a fanfic writer, try to write a story where Athena just... realizes how shitty her life was, and how badly she treated others, and let her have an home with the Itachan Family. She needs her friends, and she probably needs to express her emotions in an healtier way)

ODYSSEUS:....

What is there to say? The musical is ABOUT HIM, and about how the line between man and monster (good and evil) is incredibly thin... but also about how you CAN come back from the brink, how you can "Become Yourself" again.

In the Odyssey - even if the story is a banger -, I didn't get the impression that Odysseus changed too much. Sure, he may have some trauma and suicidial thoughts, but he didn't do a 180°, then another one, and finally got a better understanding of life. He was still just... Odysseus, the King of Itacha and Father of Telemachus. Odysseus, the Silver-Tounged Liar. Odysseus the sacker of cities.

In Epic....

In Conclusion: The EPIC versions of the characters feel like Actual Characters - almost actual humans - who make mistakes and aren't wholly "pure villainy" or "goodie two-shoes".

Sure, we have example of both of these things (Goodie = Polites, Penelope, Astynax; Villains = Poseidon, Polyphemus, Scylla, Zeus, The Suitors), as well as some morally-grey ones (Dark Grey/Leaning toward Evil = Calypso; Light Gray/Leaning towards Good= Circee, Aeolus, Tiresias)

Honorable mention (aka it’s impossible to narrow it down to my fav parts): every single thing about Lex Luthor Junior. Lex being a charismatic twitchy evil nerd who really really wants to dissect aliens is scarily endearing. Peeling off the dead-guy-kryptonian’s fingerprints— straight up skinning them off the body and wearing them to enter the spaceship is. Hah. Like yeah exactly, the dude you’ve introduced to me in this movie would definitely do that. Calling Superman and god and then full-naming his secret identity, like Lex is shoving the fact that there’s more under the ‘divinity’ right in his face. Oooooh yeah. Setting up a hero surprise date— a “fight night” for “god versus man”— like a deranged matchmaker? Kind of iconic. HOW HE REVEALED HE KIDNAPPED CLARKS MOTHER?? Oh, he’s AWFUL. and he’s GIDDY, completely unrepentant. I’m jittering just thinking about it he made it rain on supes with pictures of his captured mother. that’s a hilarious amount of emotionally fucked up. Fundamentally twisted, that goober is. “and now god bends to my will” AHHHH. But yeah just love how they made him batshit insane, pun entirely intended. The last bit w/ the “dingdingding” was funny.

Jesse Eisenberg played the whole ‘tweaky freaky psycho geek’ sitch sooo well like dude hats off. You found your niche— nerds, psychos, emotionally repressed people, or a wombo combo— and you stuck with it. Keep spreading your geek freak my beloved.

BATTFLECK OH MY GODSHSJDHD… he’s so. Wow. And he’s so fucking large??? Idk how to word it because I’ve just never seen someone with such a stance. A presence. Like his shoulders are so wide? Broad? Genuinely how does he fit through doors being such a hulking hunk of a man. he looks HAWT in a suit, the suit is what enhances it. In his batsuit it’s personally no biggie but as Bruce Wayne he’s SCRUMPTIOUS.

WONDERWOMAN. good holy mama she’s gorgeous, of the drop-dead variety. Her accent is. I’m on my knees. The scene where she gets knocked down by the Monster Thing, huffs, smirks, and then gets back up to fight. WOOF. and of course she’s absolutely beautiful in her dresses but something about that hero costume… maybe it’s how nonchalant she is about killing the Monster Thing while Brice and Clark are both like “wait where did she come from. i thought you brought her.”

Clark is a cutie pie and I Would, don’t get me wrong. But also his cuteness for me is more based on his personality so I don’t classify it as thirst. Kansas boy earned his hotness for me by doing his hero thing, which is pretty on brand actually.

Headcanon Directory: Nuada's inborn wildness, known as croí fiáin, and The Iron Malady, a devastating Elven affliction

{i am the caretaker of souls} Alright, folks... this is mostly going to be here for my own use and to organize all my thoughts in one place so that I don't have to keep bouncing around to these posts if I'm looking for information to write replies with, haha, but they're also here for anyone to read if they wish. They are topics that will be coming up in replies I'm writing today, so I figured I'd put them here in case there are some of you who write your muses with Nuada but were unfamiliar with his previous blog. These are not canon for the movie version of Nuada, but rather are for my own interpretation of him. Below the cut for length, as always.

The Inborn Wildness Condition, Croí Fiáin (Wild Heart)

Summary:

At its core, croí fiáin refers to that wildness deep inside Nuada that he can neither control nor eradicate. It's something he was born with and will always have. It's that spark of edgy or exhilarating fierceness and love of personal freedom and identity. That might make no sense, I realize, heh, because I'm honestly terrible at explaining this concept. Think of it as that nebulous aspect that makes the difference between an animal that cannot be domesticated vs. one who can. Or that driving force some people have to never stay in one place for long, to wander, or to adventure. Or that fire, passion, or unpredictability some people have inside them that can show itself at a moment's notice and at unexpected times. That's what the wildness is.

Some people don't have it at all, some have a little, and some, like Nuada, have it to an extreme. For him, there are a couple reasons why he has it. Some are just naturally born with it, and he was, but also it's because he's an Sun Elven twin, and because he has another condition called a shared soul. In his culture, twins are seen as two halves of the same soul, incomplete alone but complementary to each other. Together, they make a whole person. That's mostly just lore, but in Nuada and Nuala's case, they happened to be born with an actual shared soul. That's the reason they can feel each other's pain and emotions, and why their bodies retain injuries incurred by the other. So not only was Nuada born with this croí fiáin condition, but it's distilled down, isolated, and amplified by the fact that much of the inner qualities of a heart or a personality that are counter to croí fiáin were retained by Nuala instead. So she is the calm, practical, gentle, wise one by nature, and he is the reckless, restless, hot-tempered, and hard-to-handle one.

Croí fiáin is neither good nor evil, neither a detriment nor an advantage, at least not inherently. It is what the person makes of it. The person may have no choice but to have it, but what they do with it is their choice. Unfortunately, croí fiáin is characterized by someone being driven to impulsive action, to having a temper, to being reckless with themself, to not thinking before they act, and to resorting to violence or other extreme action when they feel their freedom (physical or spiritual) or identity is threatened, limited, or confined. So because of that, people with croí fiáin are often seen as free spirits who can't be tied down and who may act outside of societal norms in reckless or even dangerous ways.

Because I don't pretend to be this amazing writer who can just create a concept like this and pull it off perfectly, heh, please do check out the first link above and the movie mentioned if you want to, because the character I discuss there is a perfect example of someone born with this croí fiáin condition. It shows what it is, how it affects the person, what behaviors and personality traits people with the condition might display, and how they react to the consequences of their actions. So I feel like the character I mention in that post is a way better example of croí fiáin than I could ever manage myself or explain correctly, haha.

Summary:

The above link is I guess a good summary of what the Iron Malady is, but I wrote it many years ago, and it's more of a general summary for what I used for my own original elves in my fictional world (the same world Channe, Aurelien, Jix, and Strychthia are from). So for Nuada, there are some nuances that are important to mention, because the post above makes it seem like the Iron Malady is a wasting illness, one borne of sadness, hopelessness, or loneliness, and characterized by depression and a lack of will to go on living. This is true, and it's probably true for the majority of cases, but for someone like Nuada, it can take on a different form... one rooted in rage and self-destructive behavior.

Nuada can absolutely fall into depression and go the route above, with all the symptoms listed in that post. But he is just as likely to become enraged, reckless, and self-destructive as well, and I believe this is what we were seeing the beginning phases of in Hellboy II. This lack of care of what happens to him as long as he gets what he wants and the impulsive and unwise decisions he made (such as releasing the forest elemental) were symptoms of this beginning spiral into illness. Likewise, other assorted body language he displayed like gritting his teeth, snarling, grunting, narrowing his eyes, being very free with violence and killed, clenching his hands into fists, breathing hard, etc., are the start of his croí fiáin condition mixing with the beginnings of the Iron Malady to create someone so incredibly emotionally raw, like an exposed nerve.

I also think the sudden calmness at the end as he's dying, the speech he gives to Hellboy, the sense that someone flipped a switch in his from rage to grief, are all also indicative of him being on the edges of this illness. Perhaps, it was the inevitability and imminence of his death peeling away the rage to reveal the crushing sadness, grief, and hopelessness underneath. All of these things were windows into Nuada beginning to succumb to the Iron Malady in its early stages.

As to why he was beginning to develop the Iron Malady, that may not make very much sense to someone reading that post above, heh. So... yes, Nuada was removed from his home forest, but gradually, over centuries. I'm not saying it's not still painful, but that wouldn't cause a sudden loss of hope in him. And he wasn't physically imprisoned, so it's not a literal case of confinement that's doing it to him. His causes of the Iron Malady are a bit different, because his situation is different.

For Nuada, it's more that he's been alone for a long time without his people, in self-imposed exile, and loneliness is a major contributing factor. His loneliness and anger towards humans has been slowly festering, and finally, it all comes to a head. By the time he decides to take action in Hellboy II, he's hit with one devastation after another. He returns to see how his father and people are living and is horrified. He finds out neither his father nor his sister are on his side or will support him, and they don't really seem to care if he lives or dies. He loses his dear friend Mr. Wink to a horrific murder. He impulsively released the forest god, only to watch it also be murdered, which not only causes grief for the loss of this rare and beautiful being, but he also feels incredibly responsible for its death. And through all of this, he's left to deal with it... alone.

To make matters worse, his own people don't want him. He's a relic, an anachronism, a soldier without a war, a warrior without a homeland. Instead of revering him as one of the last (if not the last) warrior of his people, he's seen as an unwanted reminder of times past and an answer to a question nobody asked. This messes with Nuada's sense of self and identity. Centuries ago, it was an honor to be a warrior. They were respected, revered, and honored by the Elven people. To see that sour, and to be seen now as a pariah among his own kind, it incredibly heartbreaking and devastating to Nuada. Being a warrior isn't a hobby, a pastime, or even just a job for him. It's his whole life, his identity, his passion, and the only way he knows how to live. So for his people to reject that and him, or at least to no longer view it as important or essential, and to be essentially seen as obsolete by them really messes with Nuada's head.

All of that combined with the rage and urgency to get rid of the humans because he's frantic to save his people and isn't emotionally mature enough to go about it any other way... results in him spiraling into the beginning stages of madness, "corruption" as it's called in the movie, and ultimately the Iron Malady. If Nuada had survived past the end of Hellboy II, I think he would have fallen into a deep depression, and without help, he would have suffered the same fate as his mother.

So... yes, it's the causes and symptoms in that above post for like... forest elves, but for Nuada's unique case, these other underlying factors also cause the Iron Malady in him.

The Two in Combination...?

Something I will note... is that someone with a very pronounced case of croí fiáin is far more likely to develop the Iron Malady than someone without it. Also, the tendency to fall into the clutches of the Iron Malady is somewhat genetic, meaning that if others in the elf's family have succumbed to it, the remaining blood members have a higher likelihood of developing it themselves. Therefore, Nuada is unfortunately a perfect storm waiting to happen with regard to the Iron Malady, for a number of reasons:

His croí fiáin condition makes him more emotional and more prone to giving into his emotional whims than others, so if he is lonely, depressed, etc., he is likely to give into the desire to immerse himself in those emotions rather than to seek ways to derail that negative dialog in his head.

Nuada feels his emotions more intensely than others do, so however someone without croí fiáin might react to something, his reaction would be ten times more explosive, pointed, draining, etc. This can cause the Iron Malady to not only occur, but to develop and progress more rapidly than it would in other individuals.

Nuada's particular case of croí fiáin is amplified by the shared soul condition he has with Nuala. Even among those with croí fiáin, Nuada is a unique and special case. The combination of the two conditions of croí fiáin and shared soul make him an extremely primal, emotion-driven, unpredictable person, and one profoundly affected as much physically as mentally by his own emotions.

The Iron Malady is the illness that claimed the life of Nuada's mother, so he has a genetic predisposition for it. He doesn't know this, but in terms of personality and a good deal of his genetics, he takes far more after his mother than his father. This places him in further danger with regard to being predisposed for the Iron Malady.

What Does All This Mean for Nuada, and for Those Who Care for Him?

It means that if you want to work with him, be his friend, be his lover, or otherwise care for him in any way, you need to learn the warning signs of the Iron Malady and understand the emotional mechanics of croí fiáin in order to take proper care of him. It sounds like you're managing a toddler, heh, but what I mean is... Nuada is at the mercy of his emotions most of the time, and sometimes he can't see the forest for the trees, so to speak.

He's not thinking about the consequences for himself if he gets too mired down in negative emotion. He's not going to take care of himself with regard to prudent thinking or watching for signs of illness. He doesn't live life, he feels it. He becomes it. And getting that wrapped up in himself, in his emotions, and in what's going on around him can cause him to lose sight of his own physical and mental health. He can slip into depression very easily. He can spiral out of control very easily. He can be fine one day and completely unhinged the next.

So if you're friends with him or in a relationship, and you care about his welfare, it's good to understand him and the risks he poses to himself, as well as factors outside of his control that may make him vulnerable to the Iron Malady or to simply being dangerously reckless.

I had a great time with this drama! Nothing spectacular or awe-inspiring, but highly entertaining and beautiful to look at with a satisfying ending, plus a well-matched, drama-free main couple. I’m glad MZY and LYR are getting their due for it!

AH, you're combining some of my favourite fandoms, babe! Which is why I might end up writing a way deeper analysis than I need to lol. But let's go through it one by one.

My darling James, the golden boy of his era, he is 100% Captain America. He is hell-bent on protecting those he loves, and he would do anything for them. Also, he's been in love with one girl for all of his life. It's just so fitting for him, I feel?

But also, I feel like James could also be a great Spiderman (and that is probably his favourite superhero), especially younger James, with his charm and charisma and how he is loved and cherished by his people. Also, he is totally in love with a redhead.

Remus Lupin is a complicated one. You know, I feel like Hulk is quite fitting, since you know he gets angry and turns into a green monster, which kind of relates to Rem in a deeper level. Having said that, I think his superhero would be Moon Knight and I'm ready to diе on this grave.

Hear me out, it's about the deep-held emotional trauma and the way Steven and Jake came into existence to protect Mark, he would absolutely love, love Moon Knight, especially the Disney+ version of him. There's also the lack of control the multiple personalities entail (which is very much like Remus' turning into Moony) and the moon theme. Besides, Rem would totally have a mini crush on Oscar Isaac.

And for Sirius, I agree, he is definitely Iron Man coded and would love Tony, I mean it's in the daddy issues they share with each other, the family background, the rich kid persona and all that. But I also think Sirius would love, and I mean LOVE Peter Quill (StarLord).

StarLord also has family issues, but he grew to become an absolutely charming character, sharing his love for beings with Sirius (aka they're both a little bit of heartbreakers) and he is super funny, which I feel Sirius would love. They both love music, and Sirius would praise Starlord's taste every single day of the week. Something else Siri would love about StarLord is his found family. He met the Guardians of the Galaxy and they all adopted each other, in the same way, Sirius adopted and was adopted by James and Remus.

Reggie is Bucky Barnes (and this is one of my favourite Marvel characters). Bucky was brainwashed and tortured by Hydra, in pretty much the same way Reggie was by his family. He shared that traumatic past and his absolute desire to be better, and to improve, he doesn't want to be a deatheater anymore and he fights for what's good. Also, if he is Bucky and James is Cap, we can have a bit of Starchaser hehe.

Lily loves Spiderman, and not because James does, nah, Lily has been a fan since she was a kid, she loves his sense of justice and how he fights for what's good. Spiderman's motto "With great power, comes great responsibility" is literally Lily's bible.

Marlene is into Black Window, and not only bc she has a massive crush on her, but because she thinks she is the most badass character in the entire fucking Marvel universe, no joke. She can stand against beasts three times her size, and fight alongside the most powerful superheroes on earth by being just a human woman? She is INCREDIBLE!

Mary gives me Vision vibes, I'm not sure why, but I totally see her reading Vision fanfiction and writing some too.

Barty is a Loki kid, you cannot change my mind. I mean, forgotten and neglected child who has to be exceptionally good at everything to get the attention from his dad? He becomes evil bc he thinks it's the only way he'll get Odin to see him? This to me screams Barty, and he would love Loki.

And lastly, I think Evan likes Quick Silver. Firstly, he thinks he's super hot, but he also loved his relationship with his sister, and he loves Pietro's charm. There's just something about him that he can't stop thinking about. I also feel he would like Mystique, but that's due to her complicated past, and her ability to become anything anyone she wants. He feels it would be so freeing to do that.

PS. Didn't I say I'd go crazy with this analysis? Aaaah I'm such a nerd...

I've never really watched anything about Security Breach's cut content so I'm don't know much about it. Any specific things or moments that you wish the most were actually used?

there are voice lines and unused art for glamrock freddy that show vanny commanded to other glamrocks to disassemble him, and it would have turned him against gregory. Having your one failsafe source of protection and guidance (well. if you dont include him getting stuck on walls and railings) ripped out from underneath you, now hunting you? can you imagine how effective that would have been for most people?

this was the intention for the game. it wasnt an idea that was scrapped, it was cut because they didn't have enough time. this was SUPPOSED to happen. even if it wasnt scary, (which it might not have been accounting for how MONSTROUSLY BRIGHT THE PIZZAPLEX IS), it would've made the game much more memorable, the characters have more stakes, and made the game feel less empty. and can you IMAGINE the sexyman potential? Hot bear dad turns fucked up and evil??? you know the fandom would be all over this freak

like all silliness aside, one of my major complaints w SB is how empty it feels. It's fundamentally broken, and not just from a bugs perspective; The story does not work like it should, because most of the story was removed. You experience the most barebones version of the plot. The meat used to be there, but they hid it in the files never to be seen again. It's stuff LIKE shattered freddy that would've made this game more than it is, would've fleshed out the characters, the plot, and motivations. It injects some EMOTION in there, god forbid. Among the lines for shattered freddy related cut content is one of gregory crying!!!! come on man!!

They'll probably bring him back for Ruin, but it won't be the same, nor have the same plot or characterization. Just a skin slapped onto him, I imagine.

Before I get to vanny, i wanna touch on glamrock bonnie. I do think we were supposed to get more of him in general, seeing as a whole bonnie bowl minigame was cut out, but we really only got scraps hinting at a larger mystery. I'm not sure what all was cut, but it feels like it was building up to something much bigger and it simply never had the chance to be executed, which is a shame.

Moving away from him though, theres a bunch of stuff about Vanny/Vanessa (most of which i will not cover here). vanny my sweet lovely girl who was done so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO dirty

First of all, they completely made Vanessas personality do a 180 degree turn right before release. The version of her that we got is very mean, short tempered and cruel, whereas the version of her before actually cared about Gregory and helping him out of the pizzaplex; The reason Gregory wouldn't trust her, being that he knows she is also Vanny, but I'll get into that in a second. She seemed just as confused and scared as Gregory is, and while, yeah, having every female character be motherly and sweet is BAD i do have a point as to why that would have been better for her character, especially if it was a ruse she was putting on:

It makes the player want to trust her. Since Gregory never explains WHY we shouldn't trust Vanessa, it would make sense that we would want to doubt him, wouldn't it? There's cut lines that show Freddy didnt believe Gregory for a while either until he proves that something is up. The game was originally supposed to have a sort of "vanny meter"; I'm not sure how this would deplete, but whenever it did, Vanessas model itself would turn INTO Vanny, at which point she would start hunting you. Having the player witness one of these transitions after being led to believe that Vanessa has been genuinely trying to help us this whole time would be 1. scary in the same sense shattered freddy wouldve been 2. would explain why gregory doesn't trust her (he's seen this happen before, presumably) 3. would give freddy an actual reason to protect you instead of just doing it for the sake of protecting you, continuously going against his programming in rather inconsistent fashions

You can see how this was likely going to be incorporated through the trailers, (the line where shes saying she didnt want to hurt gregory, and it was 'just a glitch'), and it would also explain why shes NEVER IN THE FUCKING GAME DESPITE BEING ADVERTISED AS A MAIN CHARACTER AND VILLAIN

While I do think steel wool wouldn't have made her full evil (as much as i would love her to be) and would've made her genuinely a helpless wet rag whos scared and being puppeted around by afton, I do think this wouldve been better, because she wouldve been an effective threat and more sympathetic as a character. In the end game she still is just a helpless wet rag being puppeted around by afton but without any of the emotional impact. what fucking ever i guess

i still stand by the fact she should've been a copycat killer and afton's "i always come back" line would mean his INFLUENCE is eternal, not that HE HIMSELF is eternal, as we both know this would have been better in one thousand hundred million billion trillion ways forever
