I don't really have one cohesive campaign setting for my d&d games, as I prefer to purpose-build each landmass for the overall quests/adventures I think will fit together. That said, I do have a few homebrew worlds that I've been toying around with for a while that I'm not sure I'll ever really get to game in/what system I should use for it.... but the vibes are immaculate.

The Atomic Age: Rockabillies and rayguns, a psychedelic 50s retro futurist feverdream where a bunch of meddling kids have to dodge B-movie monsters and shadowy government agencies while trying to figure out why the world keeps ending. Can they finally hit snooze on the doomsday clock? Or will OURGREATNATION be forever trapped in an increasingly surreal loop of self destruction?

The Master's House: Aside from the fact that it's Inspired by Gibli and some of my favourite children's book series, this one might be a little hard to describe. A 1920s inspired panoply of warring factions, crumbling kingdoms and revolutionaries fighting over a world that adheres to the logic of a great manor home. Dig deep enough under the mountains and you'll find the bricks laid by The Good Master's hand, ride the train far enough past the horizon and you'll find the walls of the world. Every place name is a pun, like the wartorn farming province of Pantry and it's burnt out capital of Hearth, the waterside vacation town of Vanity, or cabinet: home to the provisional government trying to seize power over the kingdom of Nave away from its ruling steward.

Badlands Burnout: You and your archaeologist friends pile into a van, tune the radio just right, make sure your supplies and ammunition are topped up, and take off on a roadtrip through the post-post apocalypse. Your mission? Scavenge the ruins of the old world for grandest wonders and smallest joys, all while avoiding the weirdstorms and the horrors that devoured it. It's a journey about balancing nostalgia with discovery, regret with reinvention.

That happens to include an incredible resurgence in my love for MCU fanfic, the community around it and all the love that goes into them. hrngh. zombie apocalypse au.

ghost is the big ol' lone wolf whos doing perfectly fine in the apocalypse, of course, no he doesnt need anyone else. he has no group bc he doesnt need one.

soap is some guy who got separated from his group, 141, (price, gaz, laswell, etc.) and stumbled into ghost somehow, and for whatever reason ghost didnt kill him and instead told him to get lost, but soap decided fuck that and started following him instead. ghost does not like this and wants him to fuck off. soap insists that he has no where to go because he doesnt know where the hell he is or how to get back to his group- all he has is the name of the location they have their base at. so hes staying with ghost bc he seems trustworthy and like he would protect him. (hes a fucking moron. how the hell can he call some guy he just met 'trustworthy'? what makes him think ghost would protect him? he should know that even people that you trust with your life can hurt you.)

ghost shows him the route to the place via map. he lines it out. soap insists that hes shit with directions and will need a guide. ghost says he can find one elsewhere. soap says that no one else is anywhere around, plus ghost already knows the route, so why not he just lead him there? ghost says no. they go back and forth for a while, but eventually ghost gives up and agrees to bring him to his group- just to the location, and then hes getting the hell out of dodge. soap is very happy about this, much to ghosts disgruntlement.

this is when soap tells him that he didnt just get separated from his group, but that one of the people in the group had sold them out to another, larger group- who had captured him and put him all the way out in fuck-all-nowhere. he says he doesnt know what the state of his group is- if theyre alive, dead, imprisoned, or banished- but he wasnt just going to stay away when they could be okay.

he wasnt just going to knowingly lead ghost into potential danger without telling the man first. he wasnt that much of an asshole. he gives him an out, saying that hed understand if he changed his mind.

ghost, despite knowing that itd be fucking stupid to help him, agrees to escort him there. he justifies it in his head as having already made a commitment to the job and he isnt willing to back down from a challenge.

so they start some sort of post-apocalyptic roadtrip, fighting like hell through cities and towns and forests and at one point a literal cornfield, for whatever fucking reason.

throughout their journey, they talk. its mostly soap. (john, he insists, or soap. thats what his friends call him. ghost, in some sort of rebellion of being one of his friends, calls him johnny. it threw the man off guard at the start for whatever reason, so ghost kept it up in hopes of unsettling him and keeping him at arms length. it didnt work.)

ghost never gives him his name. never gives his story. never shows his face. never lets johnny past the walls hes built up over decades, no matter how hard the man tries. he keeps everything to himself, even his wounds- no bites. never any bites. hes not stupid enough to hide a bite from johnny, no matter how much he dislikes the man. the man trusts him for some reason, and hes not going to let himself turn and kill him if he can stop it.

johnny talks about his life. he talks about his family over in scotland; his maw, his brothers and sisters, his cousins, nieces, nephews... he tells him about his childhood pets, his time in high school, the jobs he had over the summer.

he tells him about his group. price, their de facto leader; laswell, the woman who has price by the ear and actually runs shit; gaz, a snarky little shit that loves to cause problems on purpose; and graves. johnny never talks about graves, and anytime he mentions his name his voice fills with bitter venom. ghost assumes that this graves fucker is the one who betrayed them.

ghost is curious, he wont lie, but its nothing personal about johnny. he just likes to know all he can about a situation, naturally. and the way the usually sunny disposition of the man darkens whenever he thinks about this graves man seems to be an important part of johnnys situation. thats all it is. he never asks. johnny will tell him if he wants to, anyway.

and he does, one night. theyre camping in the woods, no fire. ghost is taking the first watch, leaning against a tree with his rifle in his lap, while soap lies on his back, staring at the stars. its quiet, and johnnys own voice is barely more than a whisper as he starts to talk. he starts talking about graves- phillip graves- and his friendship with the man. how they got along, how they helped each other, how johnny trusted him.

then he talks about how he was the last time they had seen each other.

at first, it had seemed like a normal day. gaz was on watch, price was in his office, laswell was with her wife- and graves had pulled soap into a side room, saying he needed to talk to him about something. he had seemed tense, riddled with nerves and some kind of excitement. soap followed him without protest, figuring the man had gotten into some kind of mischief.

and he had. just... not in a fun, harmless way like soap expected.

he told soap about what hed done. he had given shepherd's group- a larger faction named the shadows that had been poking and prodding and pushing for ownership of their base and the surrounding territory- integral information on their schedules, defenses, and weaknesses. he had been approached while he was patrolling their territory and offered a position of power in the group if he gave them information. and he did.

soap listened, horrified, angry, and distraught- and then graves told him he could come with him.

he told him he had a place alongside him in the shadows, that he had already cleared it with shepherd as long as soap agreed to be loyal to them. he said that they could be great together. he offered as if he was already dead certain that soap would join him, that he would follow him in betraying the 141.

he offered as if he truly believed that soap was more loyal to him than to his entire family.

and so soap punched him, (hopefully he broke his nose,) and immediately ran to warn price or laswell, or anyone else. but graves had chosen his timing well. as he ran down the hall, he could hear the beginnings of a fight. of fucking warfare.

he didnt go into detail about the fighting, giving a bare bones rundown of how it went before he had been knocked out. the next time he had woken up, he'd been in a moving vehicle, blindfolded and bound. no matter what he did, what questions he asked, or how hard he struggled, he was kept in the dark about where they were going. he didnt know how long he had been slipping in and out of consciousness before he finally woke to the jostling of being thrown out of the car onto the hard ground, hearing the clang of a pocket knife sounding next to him and the doors slam shut, then the unmistakable rumbling of the car driving off.

at that point, there wasnt much left to tell. he managed to find the knife, cut away the bindings, unblindfold himself, and then end up in the trouble that ghost saved him from a day later.

when he finishes telling his story, the two of them sit in silence for a minute. johnny's glad ghost doesnt mention the way his breath had began to stutter partway through the story- even more glad for the dark hiding the way his cheeks were wet.

just as he opens his mouth to say something more, to brush off the vulnerability he displayed, ghost cuts him off with his own confession.

"simon."

"huh?"

"my name."

"oh."

"mm."

theyre silent for a few minutes more.

"goodnight, johnny."

"... g'night, simon."

at some point during their travels, they meet alejandro and rodolfo. it started with a short scuffle in a safehouse the two men had been occupying, but it ended with only a few bruises and a shaky agreement to not hurt each other.

its over dinner that soap mentions graves- they had been making small talk about how they got there, soap and alejandro immediately hitting it off- and both of the men have a nearly visceral reaction. rudy is significantly calmer about it than alejandro is, but the anger in his eyes is the same.

soap gives them a minimal description of his experience- graves betrayed his group, attacked them, and dropped soap in the middle of no where- and its not long after that alejandro and rudy have an exchange in spanish, then alejandro turns and insists that they join the group to get revenge on graves.

soap usually wouldve immediately said yes, but instead he turns to ghost. they make eye contact, seemingly having a silent conversation, before ghost sighs and turns back to the two men.

"right, fine. but im laying down some ground rules."

and so two became four.

while theyre traveling, things are stirring back with the 141. price, even though he was imprisoned, managed to get both himself and gaz out unnoticed. graves had admitted that soap had simply been removed instead of killed, hence his absence, so price is hoping that if he looks hard enough he can find him. because he knows soap would never abandon them if he had the choice.

and so they travel. price watches over gaz, gaz keeps price on his feet, and they continue searching for soap, until they find them neck deep in the middle of a horde and rescue them.

Hi Mint! I want to run a game about a group of people on a road trip getting lost in the desert at night. Technically horror, but like ... mostly existential horror. (Mostly ... there's also some weird hillbillies and Something Terrible™️.) Do you have any suggestions for a system that models isolation and mounting desperation well?

THEME: Isolation and Desperation.

Hello friend! First things first, I should probably direct you towards the Kentucky Route Zero recommendation post that I released a little while back, as a number of those games might have something that fits your fancy. Specifically, I’d recommend Midnight Roads and Apocalypse Roadtrip for the feeling of isolation out on the open road.

Now, on to some more games! As always, followers are welcome to include their own additions in the reblogs!

RoadSpire, by Glempy.

RoadSpire is an RPG about strange and bewildering liminal spaces, of being lost, and finding something anyway, about being adrift in a sea of possibilities, and the connections and relationships you make along the way; a journey is always better with friends.

The Road is a vast, fluid, and shifting world between realities; anything is possible here. The Road is the ever present NOW. Spires enforce order and rules around their immediate areas. They pin down the Road. All Spires are a puzzle, once completed they are destroyed and open a gateway to a single, specific world or dimension. The Spires are the past, and the future. And at the centre of it all stands the great wheel city of MUS-DE-TUM: gateway to worlds beyond counting, an edifice that has stood at the centre of creation since the dawn of time.

If you want a longer game about road trips that keep you ever on the move, RoadSpire might be for you. It uses a PbtA system and the biggest aim of the designer is to create the feeling of roaming liminal spaces. This game isn’t necessarily meant to invoke horror per se: it’s more of an unnerving mish-mash of a world-between-worlds, a place where anything can happen. This means that your players are probably going to be a bit more powerful, a bit more equipped to overcome what you throw at them.

Pish Tush Jumped, by atelier pilcrow.

You didn't want to go to Florida.  You didn't want to drive at 55 mph out of the rolling hills of Georiga. You'd been to Florida before, not to mention the escaped convicts who were last sighted along I-75. If it can't be helped, might as well bring along my cat, Pish Tush.

This is a game inspired by the story A Good Man is Hard to Find, by Flannery O’Connor. The game has the car break down in Georgia, but you can probably alter the location to have it happen in a place like Arizona, and replace the Boys with a number of Hillbillies. The game system, Breathless, gives you resources in the form of different-sized dice. These dice diminish in size every time you use them, up until you refresh with a Prayer. However, each time you Pray, the GM gets to introduce a problem or advance a threat, which is a great way of increasing the sense of desperation or panic. Because you are in a broken-down car in the middle of a long drive, I think it would also do a good job of evoking the feeling of isolation.

Road to Nowhere, by Capacity for Wonder. (Supplement for Liminal Horror)

Road To Nowhere re-imagines a roadtrip across the paranormal United States of America as a sprawling, horrifying and surreal megadungeon. Grab your snacks, fuel up , and plunge into the darkness that lurks just around the next turn.

This game isn’t available yet, but I’d definitely recommend keeping an eye on it for future reference. Liminal Horror is out and available, and is very much suited for the kind of game you’re looking for - exploring liminal spaces, and slowly unravelling weird and unsettling mysteries is its bread and butter. There’s even a Vehicle Appendix supplement that you can download for rules about using something like a van in your setting!

While you’re waiting for this one to come out, you can also take a look at Residents of Nowhere, which contains a number of factions for use in this road-trip-to-be.

Travel Not Advised, by 200-Proof Games.

TRAVEL NOT ADVISED is a tabletop roleplaying game that allows you and your friends to create your own stories within and interpretations of the excellent isolation-horror genre. With 2-6 players and one Documentarian or DM, together you will trespass into unknown and mysterious places and draw the ire of the supernatural MONSTER that dwells there. The game is setting-agnostic, meaning that any setting you can dream of will work thrillingly well with the rules and guidelines I’ve set out here.

Since this game is primarily a series of mechanics for telling a certain kind of story, placing your characters in a desert is absolutely possible. It appears that the dice mechanic depends on a pool of d4s and a d6 for your action dice. Using the two series of die allows for a complex story, in which your character can succeed and still have something bad happen to them. It looks like the game expects a monster, but I wonder if perhaps your suspicious hillbillies and whatever is lurking in the background would be adequate monsters in this scenario.

📖 All That's Left in the World by Erik J. Brown

Genre : Apocalyptic fiction Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

📚 Erik J. Brown is the first (and so far only) author to make me cry. I cried thick happy tears tears while reading the last chapter of this masterpiece.

To start with, I loved following Andrew and Jamie while they tried to survive in post-apocalyptic America and found comfort in eachother. The sublte way in which they started growing closer to one another felt very realistic. We see their friendship blossom and grow into the sweetest romance. The side characters were very interesting and complex too. I got attached to all of them.

When it comes to action and adventure, this book has plenty to go around! There never was a dull moment. I especially liked the roadtrip aspect present in much of the story. I loved having a glimpse on how other people were surviving and the different challenges that come with living during and after the apocalypse. The initial quest the main characters go on had me more than intrigued.

In conclusion, I'm never going to stop talking about how great this book is and how much I love it.

I started last weekend really excited about writing Renji 2, and had a good time with that. And then proceeded to have no writing time past last weekend. =_= I just need to chill out and accept that life is going to be about driving and People and racecars and the Women's World Cup rn and not about my blorbos and stories. Not that I don't also like the aforementioned but also MY BLORBOS AND STORIES THO. ):

As excited as I am about this chapter I'm still not sure if it ~works because Renji is just infodumping about 79 different things, and the part I wrote was about written vs. actually-followed easement policy in West Rukongai and how long it takes to run places. Which on one hand, Renji Why, but on the other, Why Not, Renji.

Something I have done a lot of this week, though, is driving—more in the last 7 days than in the last 7 months, to be specific—and I got reacquainted with my nemesis, audiobooks. I still don’t think I actually like audiobooks, but all of the books I listened to were very enjoyable in spite of the format, and I recommend all of them! This is especially exciting because these choices were guided by "what is currently available at the library."

H is for Hawk, Helen MacDonald (2014) I’ve been wanting to read this book for a long time, but I’m glad I didn’t get a chance to until now, because coming off of condor!Tobiume this book was especially exciting. I didn’t realize until listening that it drew so heavily on The Once and Future King (and TH White’s biography in general) as intertext, which has really made me want to re-read that book, since I haven’t read it since the summer after I graduated high school. H is for Hawk is a falconry memoir, and it is quite a bit about birds—the goshawk Mabel in particular—which I figured would be a good time, from a creative nonfiction, ecology writing POV, two genres I generally like. But oh my god it is so much better than I already thought it was going to be! MacDonald has such strong analysis of masculinist, neoliberal cultures past and present, and the kinds of mythologies falconry comes from with regard to class and gender (and sexuality, re: TH White), and her own parsing of these things as she grows up. I want to read this book again.

Psalm for the Wild-Built, Becky Chambers (2021) I am OBSESSED with this book and I keep recommending it to everyone I see. It’s about a tea monk on a future moon where, in the distant past, robots developed to work in human factories gained sapience and left the human places to go live freely and separate in the wilds. Yearning for something missing from their life, the tea monk sets off into the wilds and encounters a robot who has been sent out to check in on the humans, and to answer the question, “What do humans need?” I don’t know that I am usually a robot person—but I am a traveling tea monk person haha—but I love these robots so, so much. They name themselves for the first things they see, so they all have plant/animal names. They hyperfixate on watching stalagmites grow, for centuries. This book is so soft and thoughtful and incredibly thought-provoking. It’s about a future that doesn’t rely on post-apocalypse; nothing overtly dramatic happens but everything is gripping.

Orange World, Karen Russell (2019) This is collection of short stories—I was able to pay attention to some far more than others, but Russell had the most interesting prose for me. There were lines where I was like, man, I wish I were reading this so I could copy this down.” Really strong sense of region and place in each story, and the world building (as one might hope of a book titled Orange World) is superb. I was familiar with Russell conceptually but hadn’t read anything by her before. My favorites were the story about Plains State/Midwestern storm farmers, who captured, husbanded, and rented out storms of various stripes—and now their industry was being affected by climate change. And the story about four sisters who are gondoliers, and use echolocation (of a sort) to navigate the span of a short story.

WIP-wise, I guess LOL I’d love to write as beautifully as Karen Russell does!! But more seriously I guess it’s about being bold about the mechanics of a world and how much it is possible to accomplish even in the span of a short story.

The Nickel Boys, Colson Whitehead (2019) I’m only halfway through this one, but it’s historical fiction about a reform school in the South during Brown v Board of Education, and the false promises experienced while attempting to integrate the South.

As far as where this could be WIP research, Whitehead does a great job of minor timeskips across the parts of the novel, including skips of actually writing out major precipitating events, which makes me feel more embolden about how I’ve structured some of this WIP.

I'm taking this chance to explain that it is sorta a post apocalypse roadtrip fic. except its not a fic because i can't do multichapters

the world itself doesn't have anything wrong with it, it's just... everyone seems to have disappeared without a trace, and left the two of them behind. animals aren't hard to come by, exactly, but they're more scarce than they should be. and, to pearl's dismay, she can never find any goddamn dogs!!!

it's a bit of a ghost story. a million things you can almost find - the howl of wolves in the distance and the shadow of something flying above you - the imprint of something alive, but never actually finding anything.

i'd like to also add that there are no villagers in any of the villages they pass by also. it was fine the first time - it was an abandoned village - cobwebs all over and roofs caving in. but the second time? with a village that looked freshly lived in? as though they were only a week too late instead of years? villages don't do that. and it just hammers in that they're really, really alone.

the story itself focuses on tiny moments between them. it starts with a chapter of pearl's average life after waking up in the ashes of double life. it doesn't explain why she isn't with anyone else, but it does imply it's because she won. it's very clear that this is double life pearl.

second chapter we meet ren. the first writing piece i ever did of these two is basically this but it would be a little more.. like i'd add some more to it. flesh it out some more

for the next while it's just adventures. they learn how to exist with another person - pearl talks to herself and ren forgets to talk. waking up to someone else in the house and forgetting they're supposed to be there before realizing that this is their life now. they're roommates, and they slice up chores between them in a way that works out pretty well.

they learn little things about each other too. pearl tells stories over dinner, about herself and about the game she played in and about her soulmate most of all. ren doesn't talk about his game, but he talks about his months prior to meeting her. how it changed him, after being surrounded by trusted people [and one specific man] for so long.

arguments are little things, every little while. slowly gets more frequent. the in betweens become softer though, making it even out a bit. the bit about them both being cold comes up at one point, and the next chapter shows them holding hands as they walk through one place or another, with neither of them mentioning it.

i'm not yet sure if the fight is before or after they find themselves in the ruins of last life, but i think it would be something special if they sort of got really upset with each other there specifically, and the night after they leave, that's when the big blow up happens and, you know.

[red splatters in the snow. her legs are cold and getting colder as she sits there. there's something she remembers about this - powdered snow in her hands and up to her waist and killing her slowly. and just like back then, she is terribly, unthinkingly, horrifyingly alone.]

the idea that s4 is coming out soonish is REALLY good because i think i want the endgame to be that they finally find a barrier, and they make the mistake of walking in and. oh. theyre in life series s4 now. whoops

I think that initial post-paradise lost drive out was kind of awkward for him, mainly getting used to the absence of his wife around. She had "divorced" him in Apocalypse Weekend, but it doesn't seem like he had gotten far before getting sent into a coma.

He probably doesn't sleep in the bed for a while even though it's empty, he's gotten used to sleeping on the couch and still goes out there when he's unable to go to bed. Sure, he hated her, good riddance, but getting used to the sudden absence of a person, even one you hate, can be a weird adjustment. Probably starts enjoying being in that trailer more, makes a real home for himself. It's a disgusting mess, but now it's just HIS disgusting mess.

I think the gap is when he starts to get really close to Champ, before due to how fried out he was he was kind of a dick to him even though he loved the dog, but without the big stressors he could learn to appreciate him. And all his new, fire breathing tendencies. He starts to mellow out a little himself, he's still short tempered and a little bitter, but he's fizzled out with age and learned to laugh at least.

Maybe a bit of a cop-out but i think he was already greying in Postal 2 due to stress, but he hid it under his hair since it was more just bits of white hiding inside his hair. He probably saw it while brushing it back and groaned, he already looked and felt like shit, so getting grey already was just another thing on top of the shit pile.

Maybe between 2 and 4 he tries dying his hair a little, claim back his 'bachelor' years, he definitely sleeps around more, discovers some things about himself (cough cough bisexual), drives around in the trailer and checks out shit just for the hell of it. A random town on the road. Some shitty little tourist trap. A waffle house or two. The landmark the shitty map he has tells him "is a great view on your way around Arizona", just cause he CAN.

By 4 he's essentially speedran a mid-life crisis, he's on his roadtrip with Champ and gotten more used to being a single man out there. Sure parts of it suck, mainly his trailer being old and run down and still having to take up odd jobs, but now he's at least used to it. He's not entirely feeling like The Shit or whatever, but he's learned to like himself more with some help. He picks out clothes mostly for the comfort now, lets his natural greying hair out, being 'divorced' (via explosion) has made him be able to cope better with life.

I'm not suuuper sure what goes with P3, especially cause i don't wanna be like an armchair psychologist for disorders that aren't mine SDHFSJDFH But i like to think after Paradise Lost he went back into Dude's subconcious and calmed down too, enjoying a bit of a relaxation period, but he's still up there. He mainly manifests as visual hallucinations or a voice in his head, if this makes sense, kind of like Hobbes does?

He doesn't purposefully sabotage or fuck with Dude (as much), he's just a bit mischievous and joking. If he noticed his grey hairs after showing up in his head, he'd probably make a snarky comment about it at first, something akin to "Wow, getting grey already, old man? Try not to blow your back out pushing them back!" cause yknow, they have a pretty bicker-ing teasing relationship in-game. By 4 i think he'd more turn to appreciative teasing, like "Try not to woo em too hard, Silver Fox, save some of the rest of us."

It may not make a lot of sense but i also like to imagine P3 ages as well, being tied to P2/P4 dude so he even gets his own grey hairs, but not as many. He may be in his old Postal 3 clothes, but if he also updates his wardrobe i like to imagine him kind of adopting like the "cool uncle" look.

Or having one of those stupidly specific shirts they advertise on Facebook, yknow the kind like "DON'T FUCK WITH A SAGITTARIUS BORN IN DECEMBER WHO LOVES WATCHING DAYTIME TV AND OWNS A SHOTGUN"

OK SO . HERES THE FIRST DRAFT/VERSION OF THAT ZOMBIE AU BTW. i was still working out the plot and what was going on. then i thought abt how i could put more mw2 plot into it. so i had to p much rework the entire thing. but it ended up way better!!! but i wanna share this anyways!!!

hrngh. zombie apocalypse au.

ghost is the big ol' lone wolf whos doing perfectly fine in the apocalypse, of course, no he doesnt need anyone else. he has no group bc he doesnt need one.

soap is some guy who got separated from his group (price, gaz, laswell, etc.) and stumbled into ghost somehow, and for whatever reason ghost didnt kill him and instead told him to get lost, but soap decided fuck that and started following him instead. ghost does not like this and wants him to fuck off. soap insists that he has no where to go because he doesnt know where he is/where his group is outside of a name, so hes staying with ghost bc he knows he'll protect him (how the fuck does he know that? he doesnt know him. he doesnt know what hes done, how much blood is on his hands. hes a fucking moron placing his trust in the unknown. what an idiot. being so trusting is going to get his ass killed someday. not that ghost cares, anyways. he'll be long gone by then.)

ghost shows him the route to the place via map. he lines it out. soap insists that hes shit with directions and will need a guide. ghost says he can find one elsewhere. soap says that no one else is anywhere around, plus ghost already knows the route, so why not he just lead him there? ghost says no. they go back and forth for a while, but eventually ghost gives up and agrees to bring him to his group- just to the location, and then hes getting the hell out of dodge. soap is very very happy about this, much to ghosts disgruntlement.

so they start some sort of post-apocalyptic roadtrip, fighting like hell through cities and towns and forests and at one point a literal cornfield, for whatever fucking reason.

throughout their journey, they talk. its mostly soap. (john, he insists, or soap. thats what his friends call him. ghost, in some sort of rebellion of being one of his friends, calls him johnny. it threw the man off guard at the start for whatever reason, so ghost kept it up in hopes of unsettling him and keeping him at arms length. it didnt work.)

ghost never gives him his name. never gives his story. never shows his face. never lets johnny past the walls hes built up over decades, no matter how hard the man tries. he keeps everything to himself, even his wounds- no bites. never any bites. hes not stupid enough to hide a bite from johnny, no matter how much he dislikes the man. the man trusts him for some reason, and hes not going to let himself turn and kill him if he can stop it.

johnny talks about his life. he talks about his family over in scotland; his maw, his brothers and sisters, his cousins, nieces, nephews... he tells him about his childhood pets, his time in high school, the jobs he had over the summer.

he tells him about his group. price, their de facto leader; laswell, the woman who has price by the ear and actually runs shit; gaz, a snarky little shit that loves to cause problems on purpose; and graves. johnny always cuts himself off after he mentions graves, almost as if its a lingering habit to talk about him in the first place.

ghost is curious, he wont lie, but its nothing personal about johnny. he just likes to know all he can about a situation, naturally. and the way the usually sunny disposition of the man darkens whenever he thinks about this graves man seems to be an important part of johnny situation. thats all it is. he never asks. johnny will tell him if he wants to, anyway.

and he does one night. theyre camping in the woods, no fire, ghost taking the first watch. ghost is leaning against a tree, rifle in his lap, while soap lies on his back, staring at the stars. its quiet, and johnnys own voice is barely more than a whisper as he starts to talk. he starts talking about graves- phillip graves- and his friendship with the man. how they got along, how they helped each other, how johnny trusted him.

then he talks about how he got all the way out in fuck-all-nowhere. how graves sold them out to another group-
