hii so i wanted to know if you could do a frat boy harry who’s a hockey player and reader who’s a figure skater. and it’s like enemies to lovers type of thing like rivals.
idk how to feel about this one...but here you go!
Part 2
Tumblr media
You positioned your arms in the correct position, taking some deep breaths before the music began. The opening chords sounded—a lilting, breathy harp—and when you were ready, you bent down gracefully, and started the routine you'd been perfecting for months.
Your skates glided across the ice, your body letting the music move you through each trick. Nothing else existed for the next two and a half minutes. Drowning out every single distraction was the only way to achieve perfection, in your mind.
The music finally stopped as you skated back to the center to land in your final position. Your breathing was heavy, but you tried your hardest not to let it show. The routine needed to appear effortless, and panting like you'd just run a marathon would give the opposite effect.
There was light applause from some of the other girls you skated with after you left the center of the rink, but otherwise it was still fairly quiet. That is, until Harry showed up.
“Oh, come on, Princess, you can do better than that!”
“Suck my dick, Harry!”
“I’d rather suck on something else, love, you know that. But only if you let me.”
You rolled your eyes, but didn’t look over at him once, knowing that would only give him more satisfaction.
Harry Styles was the captain of your school’s hockey team. He was the best goalie in the state, had an excellent record, had his pick of any NHL team from coast to coast, could even be selected for the Olympic team next year. He was one of the most popular guys at your school, students and professors alike wrapped around his finger, but to you he was just a cocky, arrogant son of a bitch.
You skated at the same university, but instead of holding a stick and getting into fights and shoving opponents against plexiglass, you performed. Your competitions weren't so barbaric. You were a figure skater, an excellent one at that. Not that anyone at your school really cared. If it wasn’t aired on the a big sports network, it wasn't worth talking about. It didn't matter that you were a world class figure skater, or that you were mastering tricks that only the best skaters in the world merely considered putting in their routines. It didn't matter that you'd won competition after competition. You weren’t praised for your flawless technique or your effortless grace the way that Harry was praised for blocking an impossible shot. Statistically speaking, you technically had a better record than Harry did as far as victories went, but as history has shown, boys always got more recognition.
It didn’t bother you that Harry and his teammates were more popular than you, that wasn’t your issue. The problem was that it went straight to their heads. They lorded their talent over everyone like they were God’s gift to humankind. It drove you insane, and the fact that you all practiced and trained at the same rink made it that much worse.
You skated back to the center of the rink again, more laser focused than ever now that you knew Harry was watching. The only good thing that came out of his assholish ways was that it drove you to work ten times harder. When the music started, you could feel his eyes watching your every move, but you let it fuel you. You didn't just achieve perfection, you were perfection. And where you might have bobbled a landing last go around, this time you stuck it without a hitch.
“Yeah! That’s my girl!” Harry whistled, the sound of his hands clapping bouncing off the pretty much empty rink.
At that, you turned and glared at him, only to see him smiling and wiggling his eyebrows at you. Everything about him irritated you to the highest degree, from the self-satisfied smirk to the way his dark curly hair fanned out beneath his backward baseball cap, the one that rarely left his head unless he was wearing his goalie helmet. The most annoying thing about him was how cute he was. If he wasn’t such a dick you actually might be interested.
Before you could reply with a snide remark, your coach walked over to where Harry was pressed up against the rim of the rink. “Stop distracting my skaters, Styles!”
“Sorry, Coach,” Harry called, but he didn’t look apologetic in the slightest. Winking at you, he walked off, taking his hat off for a moment to run a hand through his hair before putting it back on again.
Shaking Harry off, you finished the rest of your training in peace. It went pretty quick, which was why Harry was there in the first place. Once you and your friends got out of your skates and changed into regular clothes in the locker room, you were all on your way to the parking lot.
“I swear he’s into you or something,” Kate, one of your best friend said when she saw Harry waiting by your car, a couple of his friends/teammates with him.
“As he should, but it’s never gonna happen,” you said.
Kate nudged you. “Why? I mean he’s annoying as fuck, but he’s the hottest guy at our school. And I’ve heard he’s, like, you know, good in bed.”
“Ugh, not you too, Kate,” you groaned, though you weren’t all that surprised she was playing devil’s advocate. She went to the dark side a few months ago when one of the other boys on the hockey team asked her to to some fraternity dance and had been together ever since. “And for the record, no one our age is actually ‘good.’ According to my sister, it takes years of practice.”
“If you’re worried I don’t have any experience, you shouldn't. I have plenty of it, Princess.”
You rolled your eyes. “Your hand doesn’t count as experience, Harry,” you said, walking past him and his friends to put your things in the trunk of your car.
His friends all laughed and pushed him around, but you ignored all of it, waiting for them all to leave. From your vantage point, you saw Kate walk over to Harry and her boyfriend Zayn. She went over and gave him a hug, but you stayed where you were, not looking Harry in the eye.
“There’s a party tonight,” Zayn said to you and Kate. “You guys should come.”
Before you could say no, Kate spoke first. “Yeah, we’ll definitely be there.” After telling you that she’d be at your house to pick you up later, she and Zayn walked off, leaving you and Harry alone.
“I’m assuming you’re sticking around because you need a ride?” you asked, slowly inching forward.
Harry nodded, reaching his hand out to you. You took it reluctantly, letting him pull you closer. Once you were close enough, though, you couldn’t help yourself. You surged forward and kissed him, pressing your body against his. Harry was more than receptive, letting you take his baseball cap off and run your hands through his hair. His kiss set you on fire, and you hated how much you loved it.
“You have to stop doing that,” you said once Harry’s lips attached to your neck. You almost couldn’t get the words out because he knew exactly which spots made your breath hitch, but you managed.
“I thought we were supposed to be keeping up appearances,” he panted, speaking the words into your skin. “You’re the one who doesn’t want anyone to know we’re dating.”
“We’re not dating.” Your response was immediate. You expected Harry to stop his attack on your neck, but he didn’t. In fact, you felt him grin against you.
“Sure, whatever you say.”
Screwing around with Harry was not something you expected. He was cocky and got on your nerves constantly. But he flirted with you just as often, and one day it just got to you. You dragged him into a closet at a party, and you’d been secretly doing whatever you were doing ever since.
“No one finds out, got it?” you whispered, unbuttoning his shirt.
“Whatever you want, Princess. We done talking now?”
So you were a thing. Friends with benefits. But not really friends because outside of closed doors Harry still pissed you off to no end. Rivals with benefits? No, that didn't have the same ring to it.
It didn't really matter, though. Even giving that much thought to the situation at hand was too much.
Harry slid into the passenger seat of your car after throwing his gear in the trunk. Giving him a ride wasn't something you foresaw after that first night you spent with him, but he didn't own a car and didn't live with his friends, and after he mentioned nearly getting jumped at a bus station, you offered to drive him home. Harry was a thorn in your side, but you weren't heartless.
His hand settled comfortably on your knee as you pulled out of the parking lot, his thumb moving back and forth along the soft material of your sweatpants.
“Don’t,” you warned.
“Don’t what?” Harry asked, though you didn't even have to look over to know he was smirking at you.
“Last time you tried something in the car we almost crashed”
“That’s because your eyes were closed. I'm completely innocent,” Harry reasoned.
“You had your fingers—”
“Now, now, Princess. Stay calm before you nearly kill us again.”
You groaned in sheer annoyance. At Harry's childishness, at yourself for letting his immaturity get to you. He knew just how to push your buttons, and you absolutely despised him for it.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
“Stay with me tonight.”
“I already told Kate—”
“Tell her you’re sick,” Harry interrupted, kissing your bare shoulder. “You didn’t even want to go in the first place. Just stay here.”
You wouldn't lie, staying in Harry's bed sounded much more appealing than holding a plastic cup of stale beer and shouting over music to be heard. Parties were never really your thing, but it was something to do on the weekends, so you went. But now Harry was presenting another option, though it was one that wandered beyond the boundaries of your arrangement.
“Don’t you think people might get the wrong idea if both of us don't show up?” you asked. You felt like you needed a reason to say no, and this was the best one you could come up with.
“Everyone thinks we hate each other,” Harry replied. His voice was raspy and slow, the way it got when he was tired. You weren't sure when you started to recognize little details like that, but now you did. “Come on. My roommate is gone for the weekend. We'd have the whole place to ourselves.”
“We’d probably kill each other,” you mused, though the idea did spark something in you.
“Maybe.”
His voice was muffled as his lips dragged across your skin, leaving goosebumps in their wake. One hand moved your hair to the side so he had better access to the spot just below your ear while the other traced lazy circles on your hip. You were tired, utterly spent really, but the sensation of Harry’s skin and the occasional nip of his teeth was hard to ignore. You leaned into his touch almost involuntarily, humming as his hands continued to dip and stroke apply pressure in the places he knew were your most sensitive.
“What were you gonna do at that party anyway?” he said. “Pretend to have a good time? Talk to guys who think they have a chance with you when they don't?”
“Who says they don't?” you asked, though it was mostly to egg Harry on. You didn't miss the glares pointed in your direction whenever you talked to other guys at parties. There weren't any kind of rules that the two of you abided by, but both of you were well aware of the fact that you weren't seeing anyone else. And Harry would always let you know how he felt about you flirting with other guys when he finally got you alone.
You'd hoped that your remark would set Harry's jealousy aflame and make him remind you how wrong you actually were. It was the kind of cat and mouse game you played often, but instead of responding the way he normally did, Harry did the oddest thing. He let go of you completely.
“Fine then. Go and have fun at your party.”
You were inexplicably cold as Harry's arms released their hold on you and he shuffled towards the edge of the bed so he wasn't touching you.
Totally and utterly surprised, you laid still, unsure of what was going on. Finally, you said, “Really?”
Harry shrugged as he pulled a book from his nightstand and opened it up, completely nonplussed. “If you think that anyone at that stupid party is going to measure up to me, then by all means,” he said, gesturing towards the bedroom door with his book.
Without another word, he went back to reading, leaving you virtually alone with your thoughts.
Something stirred in you. Guilt didn't feel like the right word, but you felt...kind of bad for making Harry feel that way, and even worse now that he wasn't paying attention to you. It was ludicrous, seeing as he drove you insane and you hated him, but at the moment, all you wanted to do was crawl over to him and have his attention again. At the very least to have him finish what he'd started.
So, perhaps against your better judgement, you did.
“I’m sorry,” you said, squishing your cheek against his shoulder and spreading your hand across his torso.
By now you didn't even have to look at him to know which tattoos you were tracing, so you kept your eyes on his face as your fingers traveled from the butterfly on his stomach down to the fern leaves on his hips. Up, down, lower, grazing until you got a reaction from him.
“You’re gonna have to do a lot better than that,” he mumbled. His eyes were still on his book, but he had yet to turn a page, so you knew progress was being made.
You added kisses to the mix. All across his chest you kissed him, sucking a hickey right where his heart was. You could feel Harry's heart beat faster, but he still wouldn't look at you, which made your brows furrow with mild annoyance.
“Hmm. Now we're getting somewhere,” he said, a satisfied grin on his face, when your hand finally stopped teasing and got to work.
Still, it took another couple minutes of you practically groveling for him to finally look at you. His chest was flushed, but his face still remained as calm as ever. He'd hardly reacted at all to what you were doing, which made you want to please him that much more.
Pouting at him, you took the book out of his hands and chucked it across his bedroom, then placed one of his hands on you.
With one brow raised, Harry looked down at you. “You ready to behave?”
The logical part of your brain was saying this was madness. You hated how smug he was acting, how sure of himself he was. You were stroking his ego, and he was eating it up, something you never thought you would do voluntarily. But you wanted to, and you hated how much you loved it, loved having to work for it.
You nodded, leaning towards him. He would most likely never let you live this moment down, and you would have to exact some kind of revenge on him in the future, but all of that was far from your mind. The only thing you cared about was Harry's lips meeting your own as he pushed you back against the mattress, finally ready to give you both what you wanted.

I have this theory that Quinn is the least talked about because he is the most visibly Jewish. People talk about how they think Jack is the best for the same reason. I’m not saying it’s on purpose like I’m sure some people don’t realize but think about which one falls into the hockey player look very white/ European. I’ve been saying this for months.
Racism/ Antisemitism in Hockey
Yes Quinn is the one that looks the most ethnically Jewish. Jack and Luke are the most Eurocentric white looking. And I want to bring to attention that antisemitism and racism go hand and hand. And hockey is not stranger to both.Quinn is the first Jewish Captain the NHL has had. Jack is the first Jewish person to be a number one pick. The NHL only has a hand full of Jewish players as well as black and poc players. Still in 2023 we have players reporting racist comments.
If you don’t believe me, I want you to think back to how Nazem Kadri was treated after he won the cup with the avalanche. There were all types of racist comments directed towards him.
The NHL and its fans have a diversity problem. This issues goes beyond just the ice. It also goes down to the wife’s and girlfriends of players. Every player in the nhl is married to a white woman except a handful. Even the poc players are married to white women.Mostly the girls the guys are encouraged to date are white women. Preferably blonde. I have yet to see a WAG that is a woman of color or black. It even carries over to fanfics all of the ones on here are centered around whiteness. All the characters are pictured to be white.
Hockey is a very white space and anything out side of being white is not encouraged. I understand that hockey is trying but it’s still not enough. So I am not surprised Quinn is treated the way he is. Even when he has made history it’s still not celebrated as much as other captains.
This is a huge thing for Quinn to make history! And I want to Celebrate him as much as I can.

Hi! My friend and I are getting into hockey and we’re kind of wondering what the vibe on Max Domi is?? I’m kind of seeing mixed messages about him so we were wondering why you like him so we can figure out what his deal is and if we should try to pay attention to him more on the leafs. Thanks!
hi anon!! just wanna say before i get going that i’m in love with this ask and you by extension for asking, and i’m sorry this took me so long!
now on to the propaganda (this is long i’m not sorry)
i’m obligated to preface this by saying i’m hugely biased as a Leafs fan who grew up in Southern Ontario. my dad has always been a pretty big Tie Domi fan, so liking Max just seemed like a natural continuation of that.
Tumblr media
baby Max with Mats Sundin, then-captain of the Leafs. he’s just a little guy,,
born March 2nd, 1995, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, one month before Tie was traded (back) to the Leafs, Max spent his childhood in Mississauga, Ontario, roughly half an hour west of Toronto. at the age of 12, following some health complications at a hockey tournament in Detroit, blood work revealed that Max had type 1 diabetes and celiac disease.
not the end of the world, clearly, but a pretty significant shock for a kid with aspirations of greatness. of course, he was able to manage it, with time, and when i finally read his book i’ll tell y’all more about it i promise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these pictures make me emotional,, a couple of Domis, a couple of decades apart,,, except Max looks about 200% cuntier
anyway
scored a hatty in his OHL debut (slay). won consecutive OHL championships with the London Knights in 2012 and 2013 (double slay). selected 12th overall by the Phoenix (now Arizona) Coyotes, and signed a three year ELC (!). won gold with Team Canada at the 2015 WJC, and was named the tournament’s best forward (huge W). traded to the Montréal Canadiens in 2018, to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2020, to the Carolina Hurricanes (via the Florida Panthers) at the trade deadline of March 31st 2022, to the Chicago Blackhawks in July of 2022, to the Dallas Stars in March 2023, and finally signed as a free agent to our beloved Toronto Maple Leafs on July 2nd 2023. he’s been on seven different NHL teams since he was drafted.
sadly, as i’ve only been a hockey fan for one calendar year, i cannot provide much insight into his time with NHL teams other than the Leafs. i have ordered and am waiting for his book to come in so i can better rotate him in my mind, but i encourage anyone who knows more about his other teams’ lore to add to this post or send me what you know, so i can share it with the world. (pls i wanna know everything about him ever)
what i can say is that him and Mitch Marner were teammates on the London Knights for two seasons, (13-14 and 14-15), the second of which saw Max as captain and Mitch as an alternate captain. the season after, Mitch was named captain in Max’s stead. seeing them back together on the Leafs brings joy to my little London Knights heart.
now back to him as a Leaf.
the current Leafs points leaders, as of December 30th, are as follows:
William Nylander - 48P (17G 31A)
Auston Matthews - 44P (29G 15A)
Mitch Marner - 38P (14G 24A)
John Tavares - 31P (11G 20A)
Morgan Rielly - 27P (4G 23A)
Max Domi - 21P (3G 18A)
the first five of these are pretty much to be expected, but there’s my close good friend Max Domi right there too :) he’s doing his part, and even if he’s not the biggest scorer, assists are just as important and valuable :) if i have to kill y’all with positivity for this i will :) i love him dearly :)
also, he currently sits at 389 career points, and he’s nowhere near done, while Tie Domi earned 245 points in his entire career of 1020 games. nobody can say shit to me about him not living up to his dad’s legacy (Note: Tie also sits at third in NHL history for penalty minutes with 3515, but that’s a stat nobody will ever surpass. ever. the current PIM leader in the NHL is Corey Perry, and he only has 1392.)
and now i’m not about to sit here and pretend i know how to quantify the skills of an NHL player, let alone describe them in great detail. i do not. however, what i do know is that i love watching him play and make plays. in my eyes, he is a good player, and this is the Max Domi Propaganda Blog so if you want something less biased i can’t help you, sorry :’)
this love began in a preseason game against the Habs, on Oct 2nd. his first game as a Leaf in Toronto, he scores a tip-in against his former team, and he shrugs it off like NBD. for those of you who were following me at the time, you know i was not normal about it then and i am not normal about it now. i think about that celly every goddamn day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
much to my great sorrow, they Leafed this game up and lost in OT 5-4. but either way, this was the moment that definitively kicked off the Rick eastoncowan Domishka era.
and the only time Max ever seems to get a scoring chance, it’s either on a breakaway or from a spot that would have been absolutely NASTY if it went in. my mans only wants sexy goals, which is a stance i respect immensely.
his first regular season goal… didn’t give him any points. it was beautiful, and a game winner, but since it happened in a shootout, it didn’t count towards his points totals. personally, i think this is bullshit, but now is neither the time nor the place for me to get into my issues with some of the NHL’s rules. (Nov 10, 2023, Flames @ Leafs)
Tumblr media
Domishka bardownski SO winner,,, you were so beautiful and so unappreciated but i will never forget you </3
now.
Max’s first real goal as a Leaf.
for those of you who followed me at the time, you may recall this post:
Tumblr media
a post that the Hockey Gods took to heart
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and obviously i followed through. what do you think i am, some kind of quitter?
Tumblr media
and, again, unfortunately, we Leafed that one up, too. we lost it in OT again, so still no Domi belt pic for Rick :(
now i’m not going to go back and gif all 18 of his assists, because i don’t think y’all care quite that much about Visual Proof of all of them. for your convenience, though, i did go back and track down whose goals he had assisted on, and the results aren’t super surprising IMO
Calle Järnkrok, Nick Robertson (assisted on 5 each)
Matthew Knies (assisted on 4)
William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Mitch Marner, Timothy Liljegren (assisted on 1 each)
anyway, now for what is quite possibly my favourite game that i didn’t actually get to watch live.
December 16, 2023, Penguins @ Leafs, a decisive 7-0 victory.
it was also a 3 point night for Max, two of which helped to complete Matthew Knies’ Gordie Howe hat trick, the first since Daniel Winnik in 2015. but a goal and an assist are only two parts of it, the third being a fight. a fight which Knies initiated against John Ludvig after he knocked out yet another of Max’s front teeth with his stick. a fight which was Knies’ first ever. i’m still mad i didn’t see this happen live, but i’ve rewatched the game in its entirety twice, and the highlights too many times to count. this game sparked my undying love for the 23-11-16 line, which is a line i still pray keefe will bring back.
and so, we have a goal and a fight, and we have an assist to finish off the hat trick, and none of it would have happened without Max :)
and speaking of fights, Max has had a couple of em himself in his time as a Leaf so far. granted, if you ask hockeyfights dot com, he didn’t win either of them, but that’s not what matters. what matters is that he looked beautiful doing it, whether it was against Ian Cole (VAN) or Sam Bennett (FLA), especially with the fun added bonus of him flexing his full head of hair at Bennett’s bald dome. as an aside, i fucking hate Sam Bennett, so Max trying to fight him was… well it made me feel things. all i’m gonna say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
max’s third goal was also gorgeous. stunning. amazing. another beautiful bardown, the sound of which lives on in my dreams.
Tumblr media
this is getting far longer than it really needs to be, so i’ll take a step back and give you my true, honest thoughts.
Max Domi has been a very helpful player for the Leafs since he got here. he obviously has the drive to play here and to play well here, and 21 points is nothing to be ashamed of. you know who else has 21 points as of me writing this? Alex Ovechkin. and now i’m not saying they are players of the same caliber, but Max is 6th on the Leafs in points, and Ovi is tied for first on the Caps. 21 points is still 21 points, no matter where in the standings someone is. Max was born to be a Leaf, and nothing makes me happier than to see him here and thriving on the team he’s loved since he was a kid. he takes shots, blocks shots, defends his boys and is defended right back in turn.
and i would not be Rick eastoncowan if i didn’t mention that i think he is hot. like stupid hot. especially without his teeth. fuck, the heart wants what the heart wants, and damn if my heart doesn’t want this tiny toothless idiot.

I’ve recently got into hockey fics and it’s completely taken over what little brain space I had left. Do you have any recs for a baby new to this wonderful new world? 💕💕
hello friend and welcome to hockey! i’m sure you sent this ask looking for a nice little list of links but unfortunately because of who i am as a person i’m about to give you way more information than you asked for.
before we dive in: i have a terrible memory when it comes to stuff i’ve read, and i have a pathological lack of bookmarks, and there is a LOT of hockey fic, so despite a fair bit of crowdsourcing from friends this list is obviously by no means exhaustive. there is SO much good stuff out there that isn't linked here. hockey fic to me has always felt like a very choose-your-own adventure fandom, and i want to empower you to choose your own adventure. there is so much hockey fic, there is truly something for everyone, but of course it’s all also subject to personal taste, so please read on for a little smorgasbord from which hopefully you can find some stuff you’ll love.
a very brief history of hrpf
when i say there is a lot of hockey fic, i feel like it is fun context to know that people have been posting hockey fic on the internet for more than 20 years. i have not been reading it for 20 years, so even having many years of this fandom under my belt, i am still building off the hard work of the beautiful weirdos who came before me. a lot of the pre-ao3 stuff has sadly but understandably been lost to time, but if you’re interested at all in seeing a bit of how we got to where we are now, @lovethygoalie has compiled some links here, and he has an nhl fandom history tag with some more fandom history!
hockey fic, due to the nature of the sport and the inexorable march of time, has always kind of happened in waves/cycles of certain players/pairings/teams being popular in the fandom for a little while, then fading away as new players/pairings/teams become the new hot thing. every time there’s a new wave of a popular thing, new people get sucked into the fandom, which creates this very charming-to-me phenomenon where i can often guess the ballpark of when they joined hockey fandom based on who their faves are, what teams they’re into, even what teams/players they’re NOT into, lol. (but obviously there have also always been people shipping rare pairs and medium-popular pairs and rooting for less popular teams and players, too! it’s a big fandom!)
anyway, that’s something i have found super fascinating to observe over the years and also something i wanted to touch on here to explain why there’s going to be some fic recs in here featuring players who you might never see mentioned the current hrpf zeitgeist. some of the players have retired, some of the pairings have simply waned in popularity, some of the teams are just not currently “in” in hockey fandom, but i still think it’s totally worth going back to dig into older stuff in addition to having fun with the current popular narratives and pairings, etc.
but onto the recs!
(it should go without saying, but please heed the tags/warnings on anything linked here! i’m offering these links mostly without commentary, but a lot of it is going to be mature/explicit-rated, some of it will deal with sensitive themes, some if it might have stuff you just don’t care for! not knowing your personal tastes, i tried to curate a selection of various lengths, types, tropes, pairings, teams, etc.)
i saw you just read my behemoth matthew/leon fic, so let’s start with more of that. it’s a popular pairing right now! very fun characters and narratives to work with! here are a few authors whose matthew/leon stuff i definitely recommend across the board (links go to their ao3 pages; there’s no point in linking individual fics because i would just be linking all of them):
bropunzeling
daisysusan
ohtempora
and some short one-shots that i really enjoyed:
if you handed over your body by photovoltaic (mature, 2.7k)
truce by anonymous (explicit, 2.1k)
and i will not come back the same by void_fish (explicit, 4k)
partly crowdsourced from pals, here are additional fic recs for pairings/players/narratives that are varying levels of currently relevant:
Fragments by heartequals (cole caufield/nick suzuki, explicit, 20k)
wait a year by daisysusan (quinn hughes/brady tkachuk, explicit, 16.8k)
cover love’s bruise by addandsubtract (johnny gaudreau/sean monahan, explicit, 8.3k)
don't ever be a stranger by bropunzeling (jamie drysdale/trevor zegras, explicit, 24k)
For the Summer by gigantic (jack hughes/trevor zegras, explicit, 3.5k)
Lionheart by Aliquis (nico hischier/jonas siegenthaler, explicit, 53k)
All Your'n by jvrcus (mathew barzal/anthony beauvillier, teen & up, 13.8k)
let's make it cinematic by kitnita (mathew barzal/anthony beauvillier, explicit, 13.2k)
@grittyreadsfic is a mostly-hockey fic rec blog! they read much more widely than me and definitely have recs for a lot of currently popular pairings not covered here, as well as rarepairs and more niche stuff.
@postoperation compiled a great list of older-ish hockey fic recs that i HIGHLY recommend, and not just because one of mine is included in there. 😂
more older fics, in no particular order; a once again partly-crowdsourced-from-my-friends list of recs:
so collect your scars and wear them well by addandsubtract (connor mcdavid/dylan strome, mature, 26k)
A Month of Sundays by Kelfin (erik johnson/gabe landeskog, mature, 68k)
Friday Night Arrives Without a Suitcase by marycontraire (danny briere/claude giroux, not rated, 14.6k)
Something Old by uraneia (danny briere/claude giroux, explicit, 13.4k)
if courage is a live wire by redheartglow (adam henrique & taylor hall friendship, teen & up, 15.5k)
Like an Explosion by Dark_Eyed_Junco (nic dowd/derek forbort, mature, 4.3k)
Lions in Arms by xihale (alex ovechkin/sidney crosby, mature, 4.7k)
Hockey at the End of the World by ionthesparrow (jeff carter/mike richards and tyler toffoli/tanner pearson, mature to explicit, a series of five fics totaling 383k)
@deepbutdazzlingdarkness has a washington capitals fic rec list; i haven’t read everything on there but i have liked what i’ve read! [i am very picky about caps fic because a) i’m a snob about local details and b) i can only read so much smut about dudes i might run into at the jeni’s ice cream in tysons corner. but there is some very good stuff. similarly, a rec i haven’t read but it comes from a friend whose writing i deeply admire and whose taste i trust implicitly:
mouth-deep by saintsideways (nicklas backstrom/mike green, explicit, 30k); the reccer says, “it’s a wild time and coated with an absolutely visionary layer of grime I can only aspire to.”]
@bunnymcfoo also has an extensive rec list, much of which i have not read, but definitely worth checking out if you need more!
anyway, sorry if that was too much, but hopefully it is just enough to get you started chasing your own hockey fic bliss. my ask box is open if you have any questions! ❤

Hey, I was curious about the world building of your hockey series and why you decided to have women in the NHL and keep the enforcer role as something a lot more common than today's NHL?
the short answer is those are the stories i wanted to tell and the awesome thing about writing your own book is you can basically write whatever you want as long as a publisher is willing to buy it, haha.
the longer answer, at least for bee, is that i do think that there are women who are incredibly talented and that it could be a possibility one day and i enjoy thinking about what that would look like. when you look at players like marie philip-poulin or even nela lopušanová, both of whom are such smart and ridiculously talented women, you wonder how it would go for them in a men's league. relatively tiny guys have long careers all of the time, why not imagine a woman playing in the pro leagues? there aren't actually rules prohibiting them from playing.
i originally started writing the series with bee as the heroine of the first book, because i thought it was a really interesting story, like how would she deal with being one of the most talented people in a room at any given time, but still have to constantly bite her tongue because she was aware how precarious her position was and how the dream could be yanked away at any moment. a large part of her internal drama in her book was not wanting to be a distraction in the locker room/feeling like she couldn't have a relationship with sakari because it could jeopardize her spot on the team/etc but ultimately deciding she could have hockey AND someone who loved her too.
for various reasons, i wasn't able to finish that book (not the least of which an author friend of mine convinced me that as a debut author it would be easier to sell a series that wasn't mixed het and queer relationships and she was right :\) but i liked bee as a character too much to cut her out or rewrite her as a man. from what i can see with the reviews, she is somewhat polarizing. people seem to either really like her or completely hate her. 🤷🏻 i don't regret leaving her in though. i think she's a very fun character to write and i love her friendship with mike so much.
for bee's arc, too, the way she integrates into the team and is a huge reason for their success was also really satisfying for me to write. i like to envision a league that may still have its issues with racism and sexism and homophobia, but ultimately, has the possibility of being more inclusive and accepting. and that's something i'm ideally going to be able to explore in later books but idk how many i'll get, so!
as for the enforcers, i don't think danny or mike are really old school enforcers in the sense that they're completely useless on the ice for anything except fighting. they have contemporary analogues: for example, i see danny as more of a ryan reaves or a nicolas deslauriers type of guy. he may not have the TOI of a top four d-man (yes i know the other two are forwards but it's the general principle), but he's not a total liability when he's out there. there's more fighting in the book than there is in real life, again for drama's sake, but i'll put it this way, des had 136 PIM last season, and a good amount of those were fights. it's not as uncommon as you'd really like to think (or maybe just me being forced to watch the flyers so much...it wasn't as uncommon, rip). and let's not kid ourselves about why guys like reaves and des are both constantly in demand, even if they may not be the most talented players.
if you're interested i have a longer post on my substack about both danny and mike's character arcs and why i wrote them the way i did, including the sources i used. basically my books are romances, but i am someone who is deeply interested in hockey culture and history, so the books are love stories, but they are also avenues for me to interrogate the kind of fucked up aspects of hockey culture. for danny and mike, that was the culture of fighting, playing through pain and ignoring your mental health, the intense and crushing toxic masculinity these men are subjected to from the time they are little kids to the time they are forced to retire. i am doing this too in delay of game, but the focus is on anxiety disorders and body dysmorphia (and the kind of fucked up way that hockey people have of talking about hockey players' bodies).
hopefully that helped answer your question!

How does the parenting and caring for Nico differ for snowy and Jack? Wait if Jack is Percy's dad, does that make them brothers????!
OsiuPOXCASOIDMAPSD
Okay so first thing's first: Jack and Percy are, if anything, closer to brothers than father/son. Percy also has a low key crush on Jack which I feel is important to mention considering LMFAO.
But yes, Percy and Nico can be described as brotherly. In endgame hockey AU they end up in a kind of QPR type thing, bonded for life through some shit that happens near the middle/end of Spotlight :) I think that Nico definitely had a little crush on Percy (well, he'll say it was a little crush) when Nico was like, 16/17 and Percy was just joining the NHL. I think he liked Percy right up until they became teammates at which point he went "oh this dude's a fucking dweeb why did I think he was hot" and then Percy put him in a headlock and the rest is history.
OKAY SO ONTO THE ACTUAL QUESTION LMFAO
So Jack is very. Stoic, I feel. He's kinda stilted and awkward, because he doesn't quite know how to handle Nico, not really. Percy was easy for him to handle, because Percy and Bitty are very similar in a lot of ways, and so Jack was like "ah yes, I've done this before" with mentoring Percy and helping him out in the beginning. Plus, Jack and Percy are far closer in age than Jack and Nico are - I believe Jack is 29 and Percy is 26, where Nico is 19. With Percy, Jack already knew what to expect, he had a baseline for how a guy that age would generally be, etc. etc.
With Nico, however, it was like being thrown a curveball-shaped-mirror. Jack looked at Nico and he saw himself at 19, fresh out of rehab and scared to shit about hockey and being queer (I do think that Jack clocked Nico pretty early, and not just because Nico wasn't super trying to hide it), he saw this kid who's talent was hanging about his head ready to snap and crush him at any point, and he thought, "no, I will not let this happen again."
But he also thought, "if someone had come to ME at that age and tried to demand I listen to them and all this shit, I would've snapped at them and shoved them away", and so he sort of. Didn't know how to approach. Kind of stood in the wings and watched how the rest of the team took to Nico. Jack stared out very much as The Captain - he took his job of watching over Nico as The Rookie very seriously, maybe more seriously than he had with other guys, but Nico wouldn't have known any different so it worked out. But now Jack is kind of stuck as The Captain and not, like. A Friend, not really. Nico thinks of Jack as a teammate first, an emergency contact at best. A last resort. Jack, however, is always there in the background, watching, keeping track, noting if Nico starts behaving strangely, sneaking off, partying more, etc. etc.
SNOWY on the other hand was immediately all-in on the "yeah you're my rookie I'm adopting you you're my child fucking deal with it" shtick. He heard they'd be getting a new backup goalie and was all prepared for that, and then Nico di Angelo rocked up to camp, five foot shit, twig-skinny, baby-faced with a scowl that could freeze even the biggest of d-men, and Snowy said "oh, word?"
Basically, where Jack hesitated because he didn't want to scare Nico off, Snowy didn't give Nico a chance to get scared off. I think there was also a sense, from Nico's end, of relief. The team's goalie was obviously not a dickhead, obviously didn't hate him, obviously wanted to help him. Even though Nico hated the way Snowy babied him, texting him about remembering to eat and sleep and all this shit, he still appreciated it on some level, because, yeah, he probably would've forgotten, otherwise.
Jack is very observant, but largely hands-off when it comes to taking care of Nico. He's always going to step in when he thinks it's necessary, and he's always got Nico's back, but he does it froma distance (such a distance that Nico doesn't even really realize Jack considers him a friend, let alone that Jack is keeping a hawks-eye on him). Snowy is exactly the opposite. He's loud and obnoxious and in-your-face about making sure Nico is alright. He calls Nico kid constantly, he's always the first to check in after a shit game, the first to ask Nico if he wants to go eat somewhere, the first to try and include him, if others have forgotten. Snowy is also sometimes less observant than Jack is, in fact a lot of the time some of Nico's quirks slip past him, because Snowy writes them off as Goalie quirks. Nico's thing about pre-game routine, for example, which we saw Snowy be flippant about. That kind of stuff means more to Nico because of things Snowy doesn't quite see, like Nico's neurodivergences. Snowy does start to catch on that there's something a little Different about it, eventually.

updated thoughts on NHL teams this holiday season WITH EXPLANATIONS under <3 (update i started this on christmas eve after work. it is now almost new years)
Tumblr media
rangers: geographically makes sense. my friends entire family likes them and the first hockey player i ever heard of was panarin (i wrote about him in an ap lang essay once) they are so babygirl to me even if they are a literal mess sometimes <3333 my favs include fox, kreider, and miller who are all so cool. kreider is personal to me for a variety of reasons and i root for his success everyday. fox is simply just!! i adore him and miller is the best and i can’t wait to see how he gets better over time. bonus to panarin for being my first and always looking cool in the videos the rangers twitter posts
-
canes: their vibes are good, they’re young and competitive, fun to watch and their social media presence is really well done <3 favs are kochetkov and skjei (bonus to aho for being my birthday twin) ive liked kochetkov since the second round last year even though his team did lose against mine so!! im happy to see him have such a large role on the canes this year
sabres: literally the sabres just look like they’re having a good time and that all the players love each other which is genuinely so fun to see, their merch is cute (my school’s chorus teacher wore a sabres ugly christmas sweater a few days ago) and i dig the blue and yellow. if i wasn’t a rangers fan this is probably the team i would’ve chosen to root for. unfortunately buffalo as a place was meh (even if it was really high on the list of places i strongly considered going to college) <33 my favs are skinner (MY FAV 30 YEAR OLD MAN) and power who is young and cool ig
senators: the vibes just seem good yk they are young and a mess what more could you want. i thought they’d be doing a lot better than they really are doing this year which sucks but whatever. i know nothing about them but i just feel like rooting for them they have that feel that makes you want them to succeed <3 favs are whatever dynamic is happening with tim and brady it is COMICAL in ottawa and they are literally just so funny to me
devils: that streak was very satisfying, i was wishing only the best for them. technically as a rangers fan the devils are like a metropolitan area rival but i literally do not care? they’re the type of team i root to succeed except for when some other team i like is against them so <333 basic but the fav has got to be jack hughes all of those brothers are FREAKS
-
stars: i like robertson a lot. oettinger is growing on me too and i dig green as a color so the stars are okay in my book
red wings: i got sent about four trade requests for moritz seider. the way he hits people is hilarious to me and i like his wild hair. also dylan larkin is cool. his cheeks are very rosy. their logo is charming and classic
canadiens: nick suzuki you are a delight and i care for you deeply (FIRST ASIAN CAPTAIN IN HABS HISTORY!!!!) the rookies are super entertaining too i like xhejab’s whole narrative
maple leafs: mitch marner. look at him is he not the most endearing player ever. i do not care about the rest of the team but the tavares narrative is intensely funny to me and i applaud him for leaving long island. i can actually name multiple players on this team which im proud of myself for
-
wild: this is mostly because their logo is pretty and i adore their vibes in regards to like kaprizov and reaves in christmas fits. ill say my fav is matt boldy bc he looks like he has a frog in his mouth and bc i don’t really know anyone on the team well enough to pick a fav
flyers: the vibes are so bad to where they’re literally good. it doesn’t make sense at all but that’s how it is. i like the jokes about their coach. fav is tk because he is always on something insane and it is so funny to go on twitter and see what shenanigans he started
penguins: they are so basic but i think everyone has thoughts on the penguins. like first off i know nothing about pittsburgh besides the fact that the penguins exist and that they’re having a great time. i don’t have a specific fav but geno is very funny in interviews so ill say him
avalanche: kept up with them after the rangers got out in the conference finals last year and they were very endearing. the vibes after they won were through the roof and this is probably one of the only teams where i can name the majority of the roster. favs include makar (he was my og avs fav during the cup run) and newy (he’s just … i want to hold him in my pocket)
-
coyotes: i really don’t think i have to explain this? it’s literally where careers go to die, they have no arena at the moment, and everyone makes fun of them constantly. i feel immense amounts of pity for them but it’s always funny when some team that everyone thinks is much better loses to the coyotes. they keep the league on their toes. i can’t pick a fav bc i literally can’t name a single player. logan cooley is a prospect for them tho whose name i do know
ducks: every time they aren’t #32 in the league i consider it a miracle. they’re in such dire straits im not even sure what’s happening. on one hand, i admire the attempt at getting bedard but also like. cmon guys put a pep in your step. fav is going to be trevor zegras bc he’s always getting into something and i admire the NHL trying to advertise him as the face of the sport over mcdavid (he is the only player i know besides gibson so??)
canucks: they are literally so pathetic im not even sure where to get started. that losing streak at the beginning of the season? they are like a sad sopping wet cat. they look so defeated but i admire petey single-handedly dragging them to survival. their news is 90% trade rumors on who is getting sent away. fav will be quinn hughes bc i am basic and he is just Like that but also petey because he’s a delight and blond
-
kings: my brother said “ive heard you mention them like once” which probably shows how much i care about them. i can name one player and it’s kopitar. also like quinton byfield but he’s a prospect. i could care less about them and their color scheme is lame
sharks: i love the sharks logo and their jerseys and their color scheme. unfortunately i don’t care about them as all and the only player i can name is couture and that’s bc he’s the captain and i did a sporcle on NHL captains once
predators: no i don’t know anything about them nor do i want to. i don’t like yellow as a color and roman josi and cody glass are the only players on their roster i know. i don’t even know much about nashville as a city
golden knights: look i really don’t know much about them. yeah mark stone is the captain and yeah i have eichel on my fantasy team but everything i hear about vegas is filled with loathing. i do wish eichel a happy revenge arc but other than that they can flop for all i care
capitals: i think as a team their vibes are good but i just do not care. this is one of the few teams in this tier where i can name more than three players which is a miracle. ive been seeing a lot of videos of dylan strome with his daughter which is adorable and i hope he signs long term in washington. cheers to ovechkin and whatever he’s doing i guess?
lightning: they’re like too good. like everyone gets it you’ve won two cups since 2020 but i just don’t really care? there’s no fun pathetic underdog arc for them. some guy at my school has a bunch of merch for them which makes no sense to me geographically but that’s whatever. stamkos is like the only player from the team that i can name but he’s cool and that video of his son with the zamboni is adorable
jets: i have multiple jets players on my fantasy team and i still can’t remember their names. winnipeg isn’t real to me and i refuse to believe it actually exists. i realize that they’re not even doing bad this year but narratively they’re kind of lame. their logo is meh to me but i love most of their jerseys
blues: i do not care about missouri as a state and know nothing about it. i can’t even believe they have a hockey team. still not a fan of yellow but i think the music note logo is cute. i know robert thomas and whatever that goalie who’s getting roasted on twitter every week. that is the extent of my knowledge and care for them. they won a cup in recent history so.
blue jackets: they’re just kind of sad at the moment because i feel like their entire roster is on IR? i feel like at the moment im writing this they’re probably like #31 in the league so lots of pity but also i just don’t care about them. their logo is pretty tho! i can name four players (werenski, johnson, laine, and gaudreau) so im counting that as a win! i have johnson on my fantasy team so i hope they keep him on the first line forever (update: not thrilled with them putting on a firework show when one of their goalies literally died because of a firework incident that proceeded to traumatize their other current goalie)
panthers: sorry to the panthers but i really don’t care about them? their logo is lame but their reverse retro jerseys are cool so they have that going for them. i know matthew tkachuk plays for them and there was a whole dramatic trade this summer but that’s it!
-
bruins: this one is actually petty i just don’t like them which doesn’t bode well with my future lol. like as far as it goes, they’re a good team and have respectable locker room culture so i should like them more than i do but i just don’t like them. their logo is boring. sorry bruins but i do like mcavoy and root for his success often
flames: i think the battle of alberta is lame. wishing only the best for kadri though who is the only flames player i know!
oilers: i think the battle of alberta is lame (part two) yeah yeah connor mcdavid who is very good but has not expressed an emotion to the media since he was 18 which probably says something about sports culture and i feel bad but also like. edmonton? really? (update after watching the ruff ruff relay, mcdavid’s dog is cute and i like that the oilers did this) tyson barrie is also cool he’s my birthday twin and i wish only the best for him
islanders: my apush teacher in 11th grade was an islanders fan. he wasn’t a great teacher and as a person was questionable, including an implication of calling girls sluts, questionable responses when asked about the lgbtq community, and thinking he was considerably more liberal than he came off as. he microaggressed me as a show of anti racism; i didn’t feel the anti racism energy, in fact i felt very uncomfortable bc it was his response to finding out i did research on racial stereotypes for about the last six months (research that literally ended up with me in multiple newspapers because it was pretty decent). did get a 5 on the exam and 100 in the class but he left a lasting impression of what team i immediately crossed off my list when deciding what hockey team to cheer for. i love the look of their aqua orange color scheme (not the blue orange that is lame) and the fisherman jerseys are super cool. would not be this low in the ranking if i didn’t have that apush teacher, who i always avoid in the halls. if he didn’t exist i might’ve been an islanders fan instead. shoutout to mat barzal whose jersey i see constantly. other players i know are lee, cizikas, and sorokin
-
blackhawks: do i need to explain this. i get literal psychic brain damage every time someone says kane to the rangers. literally psychic brain damage. if kane ever goes to the rangers im cutting my losses and becoming a sabres fan

Ooh also (same anon as before), what fascinates you about the Red Wings? What made you become a fan of theirs? What are some moments from their history (recent or older) that you think are cool/ interesting/ something people should know about when getting into them? (Sorry for asking so much, I'm just in a very inquisitive mood today i guess haha)
hey dw it's fine- it gives me more opportunity to ramble about these things :)
i feel like my perspective on these things is different since i don't actually live in/around detroit, and being european i focus a lot on european hockey + euro players in the nhl. and since the wings have had so many of the top eu guys (like fedorov and lidstrom in the 90s, zetterberg and datsyuk in the 00s (and hopefully we'll be talking about seider and raymond in this way in the future)) i kind of was interested in them at first through that. like really you can't talk about europeans in the nhl without talking about detroit; and you really can't talk about russians in the nhl without talking a lot about this team. they've also just had some of the best players in the league even if we don't talk about the europeans- obviously steve yzerman, but also going back to the 50s w legends like gordie howe and ted lindsay. as a history nerd i do like a team with a lot to get into so it was literally a match made in heaven.
in terms of stuff to know, at least being aware of the production line (gordie howe, sid abel/alex delvecchio, ted lindsay) and their dominance in the 50s is a good place to start, as well as their insane championship runs in the late 90s/early 00s (i can hardly comprehend how many players on that 2002 team are in the hhof rn because it's literally silly), the russian five + other europeans on the team (like the ones mentioned in the above paragraph). oooo and fight night: basically, in the 96 playoffs colorado forward claude lemieux hit kris draper into the boards right in front of the bench (i'm not gonna put the video of it because it still makes me wince to see it myself), causing really bad injuries. it took the wings a while to get their revenge, but they finally did on march 26 1997. i'm actually just gonna link to the footage of it here because it's actually so unreal you need to see it imo. words don't do it justice.
oh and in general, wings fans on this site love to find connections between the team's history and the current team. if you look around in the drw tag you'll find so much of it (which i totally recommend doing btw; it's a good way to learn the specific type of insanity that comes along with this lol). i think it's great we do this- and honestly, i'm surprised i don't see this with the other original six teams (looking at habs and leafs fans specifically here, you guys have just as much stuff going on)

:D🌟 🪽⛽️
🌟 What are your five favorite things about yourself? Come on, don’t be shy. Give me 5.
i like my handwriting, i'm getting better at setting boundaries, i am good at keeping my plants alive, i have great taste in music, i'm good at sharing
🪽 Name a NHL player whom you would: Sacrifice to the Gods, Do Hard Crimes With, and Save the World With.
i feel like i could convince joseph woll to commit arson if i tried hard enough but i also feel like matthew knies would be easier to convince considering his history. i wouldn't even need to sacrifice tim stu to the gods i'd kill him willingly tbh /not serious also i'd be down to go on a lil adventure with jack hughes he's got the middle child overcompensation complex so i feel like he'd be good at it
⛽️ What snacks would you pick up at the gas station for a road trip?
it's always the same thing it's a 12 ounce can of sugar free redbull a water bottle if i forgot my own some sort of protein depending on what they have (nuts, jerky, etc) and a type of mini donuts that the car can agree on (unless the car is gluten free then it's some other sort of sugar)

hello hello im about to read the new KYD chapter and can't wait!! thank you so much for getting it out today, it's absolutely making my day!
i was wondering if u might maybeee have any hot tips for me...i'm from somewhere where hockey (ice hockey at least) isn't a big thing at all but having read Sweater Weather and now KYD i'm kind of obsessed ahah and want to get into following it properly. any advice on how a complete newbie can learn about hockey?!?! (other than by reading ur fic ofc heheh)
would love any advice if anything comes to mind but ofc no worries if not, and thanks for your beautiful fics, i love them all so much <33 hope ur having a lovely day xx
Hello lovely! I feel like Hazel is better at this than me, but here's what I would say: A) Youtube is your friends so you have Highlight videos: you can type in pretty much anything in the search - best goals, best shootouts, best plays ect. and you'll get a highlight reel for it, I'll give you a link to an example here but these are kinda good when getting into the sport because they give you like the most exciting moments in a really consumable format
Documentaries: I don't know if other teams have this but I know the Penguins have a couple full documentaries up on Youtube about their cup runs, I'll give you the link to one here, but this is kinda a good way to get introduced to the world of hockey and how things work Hockey Channels: there are also some channels that make really interesting videos about hockey and hockey history and hockey news etc. My favourites are Rob Talks Hockey, Alyssa Hope, and idontgivetkachuk
B) Podcasts are also friends - my two favourite hockey podcasts are:
Mitts & Chicks it's a hockey podcast where the hosts are all women and they tackle a lot of topics that aren't always talked about by mainstream hockey outlets and Spittin Chiclets I think this is probably the most popular Hockey podcast out there, they are all dudes, and I have to skip forward every time they talk about politics but I do actually really like this podcast, their breakdowns of games are usually really good and they get really great interviews with players because two of the hosts used to play in the NHL, but it very much feels like hanging out with your cool Uncles for like three hours every week That's all I can think of right now, so I hope that helps! :)

i honestly dont think oskar should have won the masterton just because he had cancer like?? It’s a bit dramatic don’t you think and forced?
WHAT THE ACTUAL FLYING FUCK?! WHAT IN THE FUCKERY IS WRONG WITH YOU!!! DRAMATIC AND FORCED ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME WITH THIS BULLSHIT!! Absolutely not this is completely disgusting and you need somE MAJOR education on what the Bill Masterton Trophy is for. This award is for a National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport of ice hockey. It is named after Bill Masterton, the only player in NHL history to die as a direct result of injuries suffered during a game. Oskar persevere through A RARE FORM OF CANCER THAT COULD ENDED HIS CAREER AND LIFE. Oskar is only 24 fucking years old, he got diagnosed at fucking 23 and the only reason he got diagnosed was because of an injury if he never got hurt who would have known when he would have found out that he had this type of cancer and what the outcome would have been. His type of cancer is so rare that if not treated in the early it can lead to a lot more serious complications or the worse your fucking life. This cancer destroyed his immune system and he had to fight it and go for chemo during a global fucking pandemic without his family, friends and even his teammates by his side. The whole NHL was by his mother fucking side, Oskar’s diagnosis touched a lot of people and the hockey community came together to support him through it all. The day that Oskar laced up those skates and was able to play in a game again was one of the most touching, memorable and emotional nights ever especially because it was a playoff game and it was only TWO MONTHS AFTER HE BEAT CANCER! Even this seasons hockey fights cancer night Oskar was extremely touched and emotional because he saw how much he is truly loved and that the hockey community was truly rooting for him and on his side through it all. So before you make another post like this in my ask anon why don’t you go do some fucking research and learn something because this ask is truly disgusting and you should be shamed of yourself for even writing this!

Icebreaker book review
Non-spoiler review of Icebreaker by A.L. Graziadei
Tumblr media
Summary (pulled from goodreads) :
Seventeen-year-old Mickey James III is a college freshman, a brother to five sisters, and a hockey legacy. With a father and a grandfather who have gone down in NHL history, Mickey is almost guaranteed the league's top draft spot.
The only person standing in his way is Jaysen Caulfield, a contender for the #1 spot and Mickey's infuriating (and infuriatingly attractive) teammate. When rivalry turns to something more, Mickey will have to decide what he really wants, and what he's willing to risk for it.
This is a story about falling in love, finding your team (on and off the ice), and choosing your own path.
Review:
Let me start off by saying, this book? Absolutely amazing. It's a book I hold close to my heart and it's a book that feels like a soulmate. This book (and by extension, the author) saw me and wrote a character that was so close to how I felt and made him loveable, it made me feel loved and understood.
I read this in one sitting and couldn't put it down at all. I felt the tension of the games, the chemistry between the characters and absolutely loved the sibling aspect of it. The platonic relationships in this was such a delight to read since it's the type of love I cherish the most and don't often see in the books I've been reading recently.
I absolutely ADORED nova and wish there was more of her. I loved how the book points out the issues in the hockey industry (is that a correct way to say it idk lol) the racism, the classism, sexism, and homophobia.
My favourite part was how Mickey's depression and anxiety was portrayed. Mental illness manifests itself differently for every person. This was a rare time where I related so heavily to a character. Mickey's illness and his inner dialogue when it came to his illness reflected me perfectly. It was like someone was listening into my thoughts and cataloguing my feelings and actions and created Mickey. From what I have seen, there are quite a number of people who agree with how accurately the illness was shown in the book.
Mickey and I don't have the same personality, maybe I'm closer to how Dorian was but everything else he said was exactly what I was feeling.
Overall it was a fun read but also an anxious one. It's not easy reading a book that deals with a heavy topic you also suffer from. I felt every emotion Mickey was feeling and that made it an exhausting book to read but not in a bad way. I still really enjoyed it and it's one of my all-time favourite books.
P.S. This review is short because I genuinely don't know how many different ways I can say "I love it". Sometimes when you love something, it makes it harder to put it into words; that's why my review is short. Do yourself a favour, and read this book. (And please talk to me about it)

alternate ending - pt.1
it’s been two years... josh and y/n have moved on and started new lives. but what happens when they find themselves in the same city working side by side? can they move past their previous games and reconnect? or will old habits die hard?
word count: 4.9k
smut: yes | no
warnings: swearing, alcohol
“Oh my god, please Thomas.” You groan, “Please, can you just be serious for one second. One second!”
He raises his hands in defeat, “Okay, fine.”
“Thank you,” You sigh, “Now go.”
“Wait, what am I supposed to say again?” He asks, and you and the videographer share a look before you roll your eyes.
“Bienvenue à nouveau, fans des habs.” You remind him. “On three, okay?” He nods, and you count down, smiling when it finally goes off without a hitch. “Alright now one more time, in English and then we can all go home.”
He nods, and then shoots you a wink. You shake your head at him, counting up to three for the last time.
“Welcome back, habs fans!” Thomas says, and Ted, your videographer smiles.
“Done.” He turns off the camera, and you give him a pat on the back.
“We really appreciate you coming in Thomas,” You say, “Thanks again.”
“Anything for you, Y/N.” He smirks, and then he heads out.
“Alright, Ted. I’ll see you soon,” You say, gathering your things. “Have a good night.”
With that you wave and head out of the arena. Setting your things in the front seat of your Range Rover, you grin, taking a minute to admire your new car. This was something that would have taken you five years to save up for with the pay at your old job.
It’s kind of ironic, where you were two years ago to where you are now... You didn’t like your job back in Ohio but you couldn’t say you ever saw yourself coming back to Canada, let alone working for an NHL team.
You thought you had it all figured out back in Columbus. But after your life took a nose dive you realized you really didn’t. A fresh start was what you needed, and luckily with your vast experience in media, you were qualified for a position that Seth recommended to you. A position as head of media operations for the Montreal Canadiens.
You were weary at first, because why would you want to work in the NHL after you had a huge falling out with one of the players, but the more thought you gave it, the better the offer seemed. It was in Montreal, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the pay was double what you were getting in Ohio, and it would be a lot more fun.
Not to mention, there were 31 teams in the NHL, and if the one guy you were worried about did ever leave Columbus, there was a ninety three percent chance he wouldn’t come to Montreal. (Literally, you calculated.)
And now it’s been two years, arguably the best two years of your life. You have everything you didn’t have in Ohio; Stable friendships, a job you actually enjoy, a great support system. You’ve gained in every aspect of your life.
You’ve just walked in your front door, when your phone rings. You pull it out of your purse, laughing when you see your bosses name lighting up the screen. “It’s been ten minutes, Reid.” You say, and he laughs. “I’m off the clock.”
“I know, I know.” He responds. “I’m sorry, just this and I’ll leave you alone.”
“Okay, shoot.” You tell him.
“Tomorrow, media day, I split the players in half for you. We’ll do the first half tomorrow, and then the rest Friday.”
“Sounds fine to me.” You shrug, “What changed?”
“We have two new players flying in tomorrow, but they won’t be in until Friday. I figured instead of saving just the two newbies for Friday and rushing you tomorrow with the rest of the guys, we’d just split it evenly.” He explains.
“Oh,” You say, usually you found out rather quickly when there were trades and new acquisitions, but you hadn’t heard anything today. “I didn’t know we got any new players, trades?”
“Yeah, two trades. I don’t know much, it just happened. New guys are, uh- let me see...” There’s a fast beating in your heart that you haven’t felt for at least a year. When you first started, every time you heard about a trade you’d get a little nervous, cause what if it was him? Eventually those nerves went away, but they seem to have made a comeback all of the sudden.
You shake out your jitters while you wait for Reid to give you the names, “Here they are, first guy: Joel Edmundson, from Carolina.” You nod, it’s a name you’ve never heard before.
“Second, Josh Anderson, from Columbus.”
But that one? It’s a name you’ve heard all too many times.
Thank god you’re not driving anymore, because you’re sure you would have swerved into oncoming traffic after hearing that. You can feel a chill spread all the way out to your finger tips, a unsettling nervous feeling sitting on your shoulders like a goblin. This can’t be happening.
He can’t be coming here.
“Y/N?”
The phone is still held to your ear, but you can barely breathe let alone get a word out.
“Are you there?” Reid asks, and finally you manage to just murmur out a noise of acknowledgement, and then you’re hanging up, nearly collapsing onto the couch. You’re in full blown panic mode.
Within thirty minutes you’ve already fully played out scenario in your head where you quit your job and leave the city, move back in with your parents like a loser and remain single for the rest of your life. And it sucks, but honestly, it sounds better than actually dealing with this.
If you stay, and let everything play out, you’ll have to see Josh. You’ll have to talk to him, interview him, all while acting as professional as possible so no one figures out that you have history. Now that, that seems just about impossible.
In a haze you grab for your phone, searching for a specific contact you haven’t used in a while.
“Y/N, nice to hear from you! It’s been a while!” He says, but there’s a note of nervousness to his voice.
“Seth.” You scold him.
“I’m assuming you found out about Montreal’s recent acquisition?”
“Yup, sure did.” You say sarcastically. “Twenty nine other teams that he could have gone to, Seth. Why here?”
“Yeah, yeah I know.” He says, “Ninety three to seven, the odds were in your favor, but apparently you’re just really unlucky.”
“Super fucking unlucky.” You whisper, and you can hear Seth sigh on the other end of the phone. “Well, know of any other teams that are looking for media op managers? Columbus would be great,” You ramble, “There’s a really small chance he’ll come back, right?”
“Y/N, come on.” Seth says, “Last time I heard from you, you were loving it over there.”
“Yeah,” You admit, “I do, I love it here, but that’s all gonna change now.”
“It doesn’t have to,” Seth says. “You said you guys ended things on okay terms, if there’s no bad blood it shouldn’t be weird?”
“Okay terms is not good terms. He told me he’d wait for me to figure my shit out, and then I basically pushed him out the door.” You explain, “We haven’t spoken since then, there’s no way that this isn’t gonna end terribly.”
“You can both learn to be civil and professional,” Seth tries, “You shouldn’t have to give up your job because of this.”
“Yeah, well...” You sigh, shutting your eyes tight. When you open them again you’re kind of hoping you’ll be anywhere but where you actually are, with any other reality, but you’re just stuck. “I don’t really see another way this can go.”
“Don’t say that,” Seth whispers, “Promise me you’ll at least try. Try to make things work, don’t just give up before you’ve even tested the waters. This might end up being not even half as bad as you think it will be.”
When you don’t respond, Seth continues, “You love your job, you love the city, you have friends... You’ve built a life for yourself there and you can’t give that up over this.”
If it weren’t for those things you would have quit the second you heard Josh’s name, but Seth is right... You’ve worked for everything you have here. You owe it to yourself to at least try to make things work here before you give it all up.
You rub your temples with a deep groan, a dreadful feeling that you’re gonna regret this sinking in. But you sigh and agree anyway, “Okay. I’ll try.”
“Yes!” Seth says, “You got this.”
“Does he know?” You ask quietly. “Where I am? What I do?”
“No,” Seth answers, “I can tell him... If you want me to.”
“No that’s okay-,” You decide, “He should probably hear it from me. Thanks, Seth.”
“You’re welcome,” He answers, and you can’t help but smile a little. He was probably the one thing you actually missed from Columbus. “Will you call me in a few days? Let me know how things are going?”
“Yeah, of course.” You answer, “I’ll talk to you soon, okay?”
He confirms, and then says a short goodbye.
You hang up the phone, and then head straight for your wine fridge. There’s a fancy bottle of white wine that you were saving for a special occasion, and while it’s not the type of celebration you were thinking, it definitely is an occasion. You pour yourself a tall glass, grab a chocolate bar, and head to the couch to start overthinking.
Then you decide within the first ten minutes that thinking is going to do you no good, so you turn on the TV and grab another glass of wine, praying the alcohol will knock you out, because without it, there’s no way your brain will shut off.
After the third glass and your sixth episode of Schitt’s creek, you finally start to feel tired. Instead of going upstairs and going to bed, you just flop over on the couch, pulling a blanket over your body before closing your eyes, avoiding all the thoughts bumping around in your head.
They’ll still be there tomorrow you tell yourself, and then you’re out.
••••••••••
friday
You’re basically tiptoeing around the arena, sneaking players here and there to get their headshots, all while trying your best to avoid him.
Your plan is working quite well, you’ve manage to go over half the day without a run in. You’ve just finished with Shea, and you only have a few guys left, so you go for another stroll around the main concourse, looking for Brendan so you can get his goal animations done. You’re turning your head side to side, looking out for a short guy when you hear a familiar voice.
It’s been two years but you’d recognize it anywhere.
You freeze for a short moment before you’re all but throwing yourself into the room closest to you, which true to your luck, happens to be the men's bathroom. You twist the deadbolt behind you, staring at the door in pure horror.
It wiggles against the hinges, and then you hear him, “This one’s locked, man.”
You wait a good five minutes before you finally tiptoe out of the restroom, sneaking back to your office on extreme lookout. You sigh with relief when you’re in the constraints of your office. You’re finally safe now.
“Y/N,” Reid announces, opening your office door as usual, without knocking.
You give him a small smile, “Hey, Reid, what can I do for you?”
“I found the new guys for you,” He grins, and the smile drops from your face almost immediately. “They’re ready for their close up!”
You kind of feel like there’s a camera that you can look into like you’re on the office or something, because wow, what stupidly perfect timing.
Normally you’d have the mind to fake a laugh at his dumb joke, but you just shake your head in panic, standing from your chair as you flail your arms. “No-,” You start to say, but it’s too late.
“C’mon in guys,” Reid moves further into your office to clear the door way and you swear you could literally throw up on the spot right now.
“Reid- I asked Ted to do their media stuff-,” You try, but it’s too late.
They walk in, and you slap a hand over your mouth to keep from swearing loudly in front of your boss. That doesn’t stop Josh though, you can’t even look up at him, but all that comes out of his mouth is, “Holy shit.”
You nod your head, your hand slides up from your mouth to the side of your face to act as a shield, while you give Reid your fakest smile.
He furrows his brows at you, “Everything okay, Y/N?”
“Yeah, yeah...” You murmur, and you finally drop the awkward hand, crossing your arms with a huff. Your eyes stay trained on Reid, “I just um, I had asked Ted if he would do their media shots and he said he’d take care of it.” You explain, and your boss makes a face at you.
“Oh how come? Are you not feeling well?” He gives you an out before you can even think of one, and you jump on it immediately, nodding your head quickly.
“Yeah, just like splitting head ache,” You say, “Nausea, it’s gross. I don’t know what’s going on.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” He asks, and you feel terrible because you know he genuinely feels bad, Reid is one of the nicest guys out there. “You can go home, you don’t need to stick around.” He tells you, and you give him an appreciative smile, refusing to even let your eyes wander to the right.
“That’s great, Reid. Thank you, I really appreciate it,” You’re about to drop, grab your bag and run out the room like the coward you are, but Reid motions to the boys and the overwhelming urge to throw up is stronger than ever.
“I’ll just introduce you, and then I’ll send them over to Ted, you can get going.” He suggests, and you nod, sucking in a deep breath. “You’re looking quite pale actually.” Reid notes, “Poor thing,”
“Anyway,” He starts, and you force yourself to turn your body to the side, but you still can’t find the courage to look up at him. “This is Y/N, our head of media operations. She deals with all the social media, the interviews and that kind of thing. She’s great, she’s a huge part of our organization.” You give him a short smile in response, thanking him with a light tap on the arm. “Y/N, this is Joel and Josh, they’re gonna be great additions to the team.”
“Joel, and Josh...” You respond quietly, extending a hand to Joel first, forcing yourself to make eye contact. “Nice to meet you,” You say, and then you move to Josh, holding out your hand to him too, repeating your earlier words firmly. “Nice to meet you,”
It’s like your body goes cold when you look at him, he hasn’t changed one bit. He looks kind of confused, but accepts your handshake anyway, nodding with an unsure stare. He doesn’t make any move to let go, so you do it for him, pulling your hand from his grasp in a hurry while you grab your bag from behind you.
“Sorry, Reid. Thanks again, I’ll be in tomorrow.” You tell him, and then you give Josh one last look, before heading straight out of your office.
Reid looks a little bemused, but watches you leave anyways. You’re basically speed walking out of the arena, trying your hardest to make it to the parking garage in record time, because you actually feel like the air in the massive building is getting thinner.
“You forgot this.”
And just like that your heart rate spikes back up. When you don’t turn, or acknowledge him, he whispers your name and there’s a second where memories come flooding back.
Your body is nearly frozen, you don’t think you could move right now if you wanted to. Josh comes to stand in front of you, and for the first time you’re forced to look at him. Really look at him.
It’s been two years but you’d still know that expression anywhere. He’s hurt.
“You work here.” He says, almost like he’s trying to convince himself.
You bite your lips sheepishly, and you can feel your resolve starting to crumble. You can’t pretend you’re not completely overwhelmed anymore.
“Were you ever gonna tell me?”
You find the strength to nod your head, but then a second later you’re shaking it to indicate that no, you weren’t. You hadn’t decided what you were gonna do yet, you knew he was gonna find out at some point, but you also knew deep down you were never gonna be strong enough to outright introduce yourself to him this way. You were just hoping when he did find out it wouldn’t be that bad... But here you are. “I was kinda hoping I could just avoid you.” You say honestly.
He looks tense, like he’s holding back words. When he speaks he’s quiet, and you almost miss the way he scoffs quietly at your response. “Avoid me... Are we really that-,” He stops, leaving the sentence open, because he doesn’t know what word comes next. Neither do you, but you understand.
You just look at each other for a moment, and it’s now that your emotions finally get the better of you. Tears well up in your eyes, and you just shrug at him, because you have no idea what to do.
“I love this job,” You say weakly, “And I love living here, but-,”
Josh shakes his head and you stop, waiting for his interjection. “But nothing.” He starts, and then he’s moving one step closer to you, and him simply subtracting another inch shouldn’t affect you as much as it does. You feel your knees start to shake, the tears getting a little bit harder to ignore.
“This doesn’t need to be weird.” He says quietly, “I don’t want it to be-,” Once again the words are left unsaid but you nod anyway, understanding. “We’ll figure it out, okay?”
You nod quickly, meeting his eyes. You can’t tell if the feeling is warm or cold, but it spreads through your body like wildfire within seconds. You wonder if he feels it too, if there’s anything still here after so long. He drops your gaze and holds your jacket out for you, you take it and then offer him a small smile, “Bye, Y/N.”
And then he walks away.
••••••••••
3 weeks later
“Habs reverse retro, um absolutely, I love these jerseys I think they’re really really cool, so I’m gonna swipe right on these.” Josh says, toying with the tiny phone in his big hands.
You step in with a chuckle, waving a hand at Ted so he cuts the video. “Alright, you’re done! Perfect,” You say with a laugh, and Josh finally looks up from the phone. You share a glance with your videographer, both of you exchanging a knowing grin.
“What?” Josh says, and you shake your head with a smirk.
“Nothing,” You murmur. And Ted starts to laugh.
“The camera loves you,” He says to Josh, “Almost as much as you love it,”
He raises his eyebrows at you, “Was I not good?” The corners of his mouth turn up slightly and you just shake your head, trying to hide your wide grin.
“No, no,” You stop him, and he looks at you skeptically. Finally you shrug and say, “Just maybe next time we do one of these you could like, I don’t know look up at the camera a time or two?”
Josh starts to laugh, and he shakes his head, looking down bashfully at his feet. “This is not my thing, you know that.”
And just like that, that stupid feeling is back. Out from the center of your chest all the way to your finger tips. It’s dull this time, but it’s there. You freeze, you’re really hoping Ted didn’t catch on, because you shouldn't know that.
You change the subject before anything can come of it, and thank god Ted carries on as normal. He didn’t seem to notice, he just flips through his camera bag as usual, murmuring about Shea’s video being even worse.
You’re not gonna give this anymore time to boil though, so you turn to the culprit, “You’re uh, you’re good to go, thanks Josh.” You say, scratching at the back of your neck.
He just nods, looking worried at first, but and then half smiles before heading out the door. Once he’s out of ear shot you sigh, grabbing your bag off the chair.
“Time for a lunch break, Ted?” Cause, wow do you ever feel like you need one. “We’ll film Brendan after?”
“Sounds good,” Ted smiles.
You nod and then head for the hallway, making sure to go the opposite way Josh did. If you have to walk the whole concourse so be it.
You shouldn’t be so skittish, you know that... But things have been good the last three weeks. You’ve managed to talk without it being horribly awkward, and no one has found out about your history yet. However, you’re not going to take any chances. The longer you’re in the same room with him, the more likely someone is to slip up, like Josh almost just did. You don’t need to spend a bunch of time with him, just enough time to get your job done. So that’s what you’ve been doing, the bare minimum. Talking only if you absolutely need to.
The habs were having a great start to the season, not to mention Josh was a huge part of that. He was having the best start of his career, and you weren’t going to ruin it.
You take a seat at one of the tables in the common area, pulling your book and salad out of your bag with a huff. You would really rather a burger and fries, or something not made up of 90% water, but it was in the fridge and it was easy so you grabbed it.
You stab the fork into the lettuce, pulling it up one time before you just shake your head and leave it in the container, prodding around at it while your stomach grumbles.
You look up from your book when your name is called, Joel and of course, Josh are sitting down at a table across from you, an obscene amount of boxed food in their hands.
Your heart is thumping rapidly in your chest, and you try your best to talk through it, raising your hand in a wave, “Hi, guys.”
“What’s going on?” Joel asks, “Hungry?”
“No but you sure look it,” You lie, nodding to the boxes they’re holding.
Joel smiles giddily as they start to open them up, you just grin and then go back to poking at your salad, trying not to pay attention to how good their food smells. You try to distract yourself with your book, but yet again, that doesn’t last long.
“Hey,” You look up, eyes meeting a complete stranger this time. “I was just wondering if you could tell me where the opposing team locker room is?”
“Oh, yeah!” You say, standing from your chair to direct him down the hallway. “You’re a player?” You clarify, just to be sure, and he nods. “It’s just down the hall and to the left. Past the equipment room.”
“Okay...” He says, and you stare oddly as he looks down at his feet and then back up at you. “Thanks,”
He has longer blonde hair, what these stupid boys would probably call a flow, and a long one at that, but he pulls it off. He’s got a nice face with a trimmed beard, and you can tell just from one look at him, swedish.
He stares at you for a moment and then chuckles uncomfortably, “I’m sorry, worst conversation starter ever.”
Your stomach knots when he says that, and you want to believe that the reason for it has nothing to do with that fact that Josh is sitting right there, watching all of this. You just smile awkwardly, “It wasn’t terrible? More the follow up that could use some work...” You joke.
“I just saw you sitting here and I thought you were really beautiful, I’m William. I play for the Oilers.”
Your heart is pounding in your ears, and although this guy is really sweet all you can think about is Josh sitting right there and hearing all this, but you try your best to smile anyway, not wanting to be rude. “That’s really sweet of you, thank you.” Maybe at a different time you’d give this guy a chance, because he seems quite nice. You briefly remember seeing a name on the Oilers roster for tonight, William Lagesson.
He’s about to open his mouth again, when a whistle from behind the both of you catches your attention, you turn to see a red head with a toothy grin. “Leave that poor girl alone, Laggy.” The red head snips, and William runs a hand through his hair nervously.
You laugh, trying to make him feel better, and he chuckles with a shake of his head, mumbling an apology for his teammate. “Can I maybe just get your number?” He asks, and you try not to look as surprised as you really are.
It’s been ages since someone asked you for your number, and apparently it’s been a long time since you said no too, because you completely forget how.
Your overwhelming urge to be nice all the time fails you here, and you find yourself saying yes even though you really don’t want to. He’s sweet and all but, you’d rather not do the hockey player thing again.
At the last minute you finally have the mind to put a fake number in, and you feel bad momentarily as he smiles and says bye, but as soon as you see the empty spot at Joel’s table, you just feel panicked instead.
Josh is gone... Does that mean he didn’t hear?
You pack up your things and then stop beside Joel, he side eyes you and then makes a face and you just frown.
“Coach texted Josh, so he wasn’t lucky enough to hear that whole thing... Me on the other hand?” He takes an obnoxious bite of his food as he shoots you a wink, and all you can do is roll your eyes, and walk away. “That was hilarious!” Joel calls behind you, and you just wave him off, but really, there’s some relief setting in when you find out that Josh missed that last part.
When you arrive back at your office, there’s a note from your boss, and a box on your desk.
“Head home early today. Boys will be preparing for the game. We can finish up on Monday. -Reid” Is written in his chicken scratch on a bright pink sticky note.
You do a happy little wiggle, and then reach for the box. It smells amazing, and your stomach grumbles at the thought, but then when you open it and realize what it is, you’ve suddenly lost your appetite.
It’s pad thai and spicy yam chicken... Your favorite.
You know instantly this isn’t from Reid... There’s probably only one person in the world who knows what your order is. You used to go to that thai place by his house all the time, and you’d always order the same thing.
You don’t even put your bag down, you just leave the food on your desk and turn the light off before walking out.
You try your best not to think about everything that happened today on your way home, because it felt like a huge step back after three weeks of progress.
You stop for some groceries, and take a look in a little boutique, anything to keep your mind busy. When you arrive home you play music almost as loud as it can go, hoping it will drown out your thoughts. Over the last three weeks you’ve done enough thinking about this, you’re tired.
So you workout, shower, make some dinner, and then you sit down to watch the game, pinching yourself every time you find your eyes lingering on number seventeen a little too long.
The game is pretty slow, the boys aren’t playing their best, Edmonton is on their game and you just know they’re not gonna come out of this one with the two points, but you watch anyway. You kind of want to turn it off and switch to something else after the second period, but you give in and stick around for the third.
All is fine and normal until the five minute mark ticks down on the clock.
The camera spans to the right to follow the players going up the ice, when you hear the commentator say, “Big battle, in front of the net...”
And your heart just about stops, because you have a feeling you know exactly who it is. Guess Joel was wrong... He did hear the whole thing.
“Anderson, and Lagesson, they’re still tied up together. Anderson is hot.”

a series of quotes on a particular theme
[Head coach Todd] Gill continues to stress to Suzuki the importance of being Owen Sound's best player, most effective defensive forward and top forward every game. For the most part, the 23rd captain in Attack history has responded.
"The No. 1 job in the NHL is consistency," says the coach. "That will get you to the next level. Nick wants to be a leader, the go-to guy.
"Off the ice, he's an incredibly grounded person. He's almost a Bob Gainey-type captain where he leads by example on the ice and when he does talk in the dressing room, the players understand they should listen."
11/08/18. habs prospect nick suzuki, centrepiece in max pacioretty trade, 'has it all'
Suzuki, 19, is unassuming and a soft-talker. According to Guelph coach George Burnett, he’s a quiet leader. “He brings a calmness, he’s very poised,” said Burnett. “He doesn’t say much, but when he speaks everyone is listening. He picks his spots.”

While Suzuki is a quiet kid, Burnett said his teammates listen when he speaks. “He’s unassuming, just kind of fits in,” Burnett said about Suzuki, who will turn 20 on Aug. 10. “He’s not the guy who’s doing all the talking — he’s not loud at all. Just very soft-spoken. The guys seem to enjoy and have fun being around him. He’s an outstanding teammate. He cares as much about the young kids on the team as he does the older guys. He’s been a terrific teammate and I think that rubs off when you have his talents and you’re just one of the guys. He doesn’t seem to have a selfish bone or a big ego on the surface. All top players have to have an ego, but it doesn’t come across in a fashion that turns anybody in a negative way at all. He’s been fun to coach and when he has something to say I enjoy his feedback.”
05/14/19. suzuki is sizzling
Young gun Nick Suzuki soaked up every single second of his on-ice experience during the Captains' Reunion. The festivities clearly gave him something to aspire to down the road.
“As a young player, you want to be in those guys' shoes at the end, having a great career and being a captain of a team one day. I look up to those guys a lot,” said Suzuki. "It's definitely a once-in-a-career kind of thing.”

“I know there's a lot of pressure, it's a true honor to have that. I've just been trying to keep my head low and keep working hard. I don't say too much in the room but I just try to learn off everyone; we have a bunch of great leaders here. I look up to Phil, I watch him every day, so I get to learn little things off him.”
03/02/20. suzuki: molson cup and a rookie season to remember
“He was one of the first guys I got to talk to when I got traded,” Suzuki said. “I was kind of the new guy around the room. When I first came in, I was doing fitness testing with all the NHL players and we ended up talking a little bit. Ever since then, he’s been just a guy I always look up to, always can go to to ask questions. You can just see the respect that he gets around our room, around the league, and that’s kind of what I want to be if I can hit 1,000 games. Just be the way that he’s respected. I really look up to him in a lot of ways.”

And here’s the funny thing about what happened next. When I was with the Canucks, I had been watching a lot of games during my time in the bubble in Edmonton — because there wasn’t a whole to do — and one of the guys who kept catching my eye? Nick Suzuki. I’m serious. I didn’t get to see a whole lot of him while I was playing on the West Coast. But watching him against the Pens … I was just like, Man, I want to play on this guy’s line one day.

“You look at our regular season at the end of the year, we were going through a tough time. You needed someone to step up and take charge, and it was him,” says Canadiens winger Brendan Gallagher. “Last year in the playoffs, same thing. He’s a guy who steps up, scores big goals. It’s something he’s done as long as he’s been playing hockey, something not everyone has.” . . .
Still, as long as Montreal’s future is tied to Suzuki, Ratcliffe is optimistic about where things are going. “He’s going to be a Stanley Cup champion by the end of his career,” Ratcliffe says. “[Maybe] more times than one.”
06/17/21. at last
“Smaller right shot, but uber-competitive and intelligent with the puck, and that’s kind of what Nick is,” Staal said. “He’s really, really competitive, very intelligent with the puck, puts himself in good positions to be able to do the right things defensively but also create offence. So, he’s a huge part of our team and obviously developing into a leader for this group and an important part of what we’ve got going here.” . . .
here's cole caufield on what he's learned about nick suzuki: ”watching him earlier this year you could see the skill, the work ethic, and the really good player that he is. but getting to play with him and be with him every day, you see how calm he is, how mature he is as a player and as a person and how he carries himself every day. he's a big part of this team and why we've had success up to this point.” . . .
“I think he’s a quiet guy, but he’s going to be a quiet leader,” said [defense coach Luke] Richardson. “You saw in junior, you saw him tear it up there during the playoffs and you’ve seen it over the last two years just grow every game. I think it’s the confidence level that’s showing and it’s even in his smile. He’s got that sly smile on the ice. I’m sure it bothers the other team, but it brings confidence to himself and I think his teammates just showing that he’s gaining more confidence in his play and his demeanor. I don’t think he’s going to be a real loud, vocal, rah-rah guy, but not everybody has to be. I think some leaders are just pure by their play, and I think that’s what Nick’s going to be.”
