About MS Recall
The problem
So, apparently Microsoft decided to put an AI on their operating system that uses regular screenshots to store, index, and describe every single thing the user does on their computer. If you enter a password -- it's stored and indexed; if you send a message: it's stored and indexed. It stores all that in a neat little unencrypted database that doesn't require elevated privileges to access, meaning any hostile program only needs a few seconds at most to perform weeks worth of data collection, and it's already processed for easy use by the cracker. Even if the data stays on device, the applications for facilitating domestic abuse are absolutely terrifying.
I don't use DOS, so it doesn't affect me, right?
Wrong. Chances are, your bank, your hospital, your employer, your school, your tax office use it. This "feature" can be deactivated, and I seriously hope it will be on every single system handling sensitive data (or better stop using that operating system altogether), but it only takes one employee viewing it on their personal computer for a major data leak to occur.
The wider problem
The data is supposedly and presumably stored on-device which should mean Microsoft doesn't collect it, but the operating system as a whole is also proprietary and closed-source, meaning:
it's very hard to tell what the system does or doesn't do, the only recourse we have are to look at outgoing data packets (not foolproof) or study the disassembly (difficult and illegal)
it is both extremely hard and illegal to make and maintain forks (modified versions), which means if they do something their users absolutely can't agree with, they're left with three choices:
use an outdated version -- not the best for security, and Microsoft makes updates mandatory
switch operating systems -- can be time-consuming and costly to do, especially if the user relies on system-specific functionality (I'd recommend getting started on this asap)
just accept it -- what most will probably end up doing

hello! I'm a fellow Ukagaka developer (o/ hello from the Dream Team) and while looking at Aster's code, I noticed you were wanting a VS Code extension for surfaces.txt; kanadelab has published one such thing! Also, it's extremely cool to see a Ghost with a focus on multiplicity, from one plural to another.
oh!! that'll be extremely useful given I want to try doing more complex stuff with animations in the future! thanks for letting me know!
yeah!! aster is a bit of a vessel to write about our own plural experiences and write fictional ones twisted into it. in part our reason for the project is a subtle introduction to plurality as a concept to more people! primarily the goal is to just have fun with it, but if our work helps in the bigger picture it would be nice!

Current AI programs need more data input to increase their accuracy & results. Currently, these systems are not working very well. (That’s why people have poisoned themselves using AI generated mushroom identification books already)
And it’s quite clear that not a lot of people want to give their data to AI programs. So they go the sneaky route and just pre-install it. Now the onus is on you, the user, to 1) realise it’s on and 2) figure out a way to turn it off. And in the meantime, AI can happily harvest fresh & free new data.
So, just in case you hate Windows, there’s a completely free open source operating system called Linux ❤️ you can just download it from the internet, put it on a usb stick and test it out. You can then install it if you like (make sure to create a windows restore usb beforehand so you can go back to windows if you need to). Again, all for free. Different developers created different versions depending on your level of computer knowledge and coding skills. I am a huge fan of Ubuntu, for example. At the moment, Linux is a bit more limited than Windows when it comes to what programs you can run on it, but it also has a full free variant of Office Suite (called LibreOffice) and the more people use it
- the less money Bill Gates gets
- the more other companies will develop software that is Linux-compatible in the future
- the safer your device will be (don’t forget the windows update error that broke half the world a few months ago)

Ok, now that you wiped away your tears of laughter, here’s how you can change your web browser and search engine:
- download one of the browsers that put privacy and security first. Here’s a great list. Examples include: Brave, Mozilla Firefox, and for more advanced users: Tor, Ungoogled
- use a VPN. There’s free and paid options.
- change your default search engine to something other than Google. Your online traffic matters. Which websites you load matters. Think of your time and clicks as online currency. Ecosia is a great Bing/Microsoft based search engine that also plants trees with every search! And it gives great results. Another one is DuckDuckGo. Here’s a list of alternative search engines.
Hot tip: the operating systems also collect data whenever you use an online keyboard (and suggested text). Don’t want them to know what you’re typing? You can download a free privacy keyboard for Android (haven’t found one for iOS yet but Apple says the data is stored on device only. Let’s hope so).
Another idea for advanced users: operating systems (such as macOS and Windows) still collect tons of data about you, and cost money if you want to install them on a 2nd hand device, for example. You can use operating systems that are completely free, open-source and user-friendly, such as Ubuntu.
Now go and roam the internet, be free, and donate to open-source programs if you can 😘
