Y'all know those fanfics where Saiki is an asshole to Teruhashi or really rude to her until they start dating? Yeah, this is what I imagine what that Saiki meeting Canon Saiki would be like.
Canon Saiki: So do you still deal with Teruhashi?
Fanfic Saiki: I can not avoid that woman. The other day she was bothering me when a mob of her fans showed up so I teleported away and-
Canon Saiki, surprised: You revealed your powers to her?! I mean, her fans do suck, so I can understand panicking and teleporting the both of you away-
Fanfic Saiki: What? No, I teleported myself away and left her there.
Canon Saiki: You what.
Fanfic Saiki: I teleported myself away. Well actually, I was the one who kinda summoned that crowd so that she'd be too overwhelmed with them to go find me-
Canon Saiki, shaking with murderous rage: You what.

Book Review 46 – The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez
Tumblr media
Okay the month of August was essentially a write-off for...a lot of things, but non-web serial reading among them! Now trying to claw my way out of the pit and back on the horse. So, some high concept genre fic full of queer people and war crimes, just what the doctor ordered.
The Spear Cuts Through Water is the fantasy epic and love story of a pair of warriors – one a generally despised one-armed checkpoint guard, the other a positively reviled princeling – as they escort the moon goddess in her attempt to escape the prison her sons had trapped her within as they tyranize and empire that spans a continent. As told through a dream/vision of the Inverted Theater, where shades throughout time are called while they sleep to witness a performance put on by the favoured child of moon and sea. Intercut with the same tale as told through out POV’s grandmother, along with vignettes of his life as the son of a failing cloth merchant centuries in the future as the world goes through its equivalent of WW1. All this metaness and layering is either the book’s strongest point or it will make your eyes roll back into your skull so, you know, make an informed choice here.
Being entirely honest I don’t remember exactly how this book ended up on my radar – I believe I was first pointed towards after I expressed some dissatisfaction with this year’s Hugo nominees as something that would have been a more deserving inclusion on the short list. Certainly I’d never heard Jimenez’s name before picking it up. Entirely happy I did, anyway – whoever first rec’d it yes, this does deserve a Hugo nod way more than some of the other nominations.
The plot itself is quite well done, but absent any of the stylistic flourish wouldn’t really have been anything that memorable. The layered framing devices – and the way that they intrude on the narrative in a hundred different ways, switching from depicting the action to saying how it was staged and presented or how the narrator heard the tale told – are really just fantastically well done, enough that even when it got all meta and self-referential I was still enjoying it more than enough to just go with it.
Not that our heroes aren’t fun in their own right. They’re both at times profoundly unlikable, and other times utter idiots, and always totally and completely incapable of intelligibly expressing their feelings. It’s great, love them. Even if on occasion I also wanted to throw rocks at them. The main supporting cast – or at least Defect the tortoise and the moon/empress herself – are even better, really.
Though as far as characterization goes its the extras where the book really shines. It has a trick I really, really like where little snippets of the internal monologue or history of some fellow traveller on the road or sentry being gutter from behind are interspersed into the action in italics like this. Diegetically this would be the chorus in the theatrical performance, but regardless it does a shocking amount to make the world feel like it’s full of actual people and not just mannequins forming a backdrop for the characters who matter.
The book fits into the honourable tradition of modern SFF with cool-eyed and unsentimental portrayals of feudalism/imperialism, war crimes and general oppression (including in this case very plot-relevant and character-informing ableism) but only a vague and attenuated sort of 21st century homophobia, if that. Like all modern queer genrefic it’s also at least kind of in conversation with the looming shadow of Burying Your Gays, with a bait and switch tragic heroic sacrifice that seemed very conscious and pointed.
The framing devices lend themselves well to the book being written in a kind of mythic register, which I very much enjoyed. The epilogue felt like an intrusion of history on mythology, and I do mean that as a compliment, full of messiness and ambiguity and short on heroes and golden ages or utopias. Overall very much enjoyed the book, perfect reading for being stuck in a waiting room for a passport renewal.

Update and More Facts about The One True School Master of Vault 41
The Update:
I've finally been doing more transferring of my notes and partly-written, unordered scenes into one document, so things are in chronological order. Thus far, draft zero of TOTSMOV41 has reached approximately 151 pages, or, by its word count, 48,042 words. Although, a lot of the document is made up of my extraneous notes, so it's not all actually story.
The Facts:
The fic will have various epigraphs, and one of them is a Japeth quote.
There will be no true epilogue because I'm leaving room for sequel potential.
After the Wizard Tree business unfolds at the Bank of Putsi, the vast majority of the fic is set at the Schools.
I haven't exactly decided on a structure for TOTSMOV41 yet, so it might either consist of a triumvirate of "parts," with each section being exceptionally long, working like a triptych of sorts, or it will be broken up into more traditional chapters, possibly of varying lengths. My plan, once the whole fic is done, would be to post a section per week or so.
Does anyone have an opinion on the structure? At the moment, I'm leaning toward having three, massive sections because it makes the most sense narratively, especially with regards to time and settings, and could flow better.
That said, unless anything changes drastically, the title of part one or chapter one will be: "Of Solipsism, Sophistry, and Storians."
Originally, it was "Of Sophistry and Storians," which I thought was more compact, and it had a better ring to it while more directly featuring the "balance" between "Sophie" and "Storian" that may be present. Yet, ultimately, the longer title proved more accurate to the contents of that part.
The other two parts are tentatively titled: "Great Mistake II and Great Mistake III" and "Phantoms, Prescience, and the Pen."
Also, for your reference, if needed, I've synthesized definitions from various sources:
Solipsism (n) = the quality of being very self-centered or selfish, or, in philosophy, the view or theory that the self is all that can be known to exist, that what's in your mind is the only reality that can be known and verified. Solipsism comes from the Latin words for alone (sol) and self (ipse), and means that only the self is real. Alternatively, it implies excessive regard for oneself and one's own interests, to the exclusion of others; preoccupation with oneself; extreme selfishness, centeredness, or self-absorption. Also in a neutral sense: isolation, solitude.
Sophistry (n) =
-The use of specious but fallacious arguments, especially with the intention of deceiving.
-The deliberate use of fallacious reasoning, intellectual charlatanism, and moral unscrupulousness.
-Subtly deceptive reasoning or argumentation.
-Reasoning or arguments that sound correct but are actually false.
-Cunning, trickery, craft.
Tumblr media
The entire fic technically takes place over the span of approximately one day, or less than a day, really. It's more like several hours have passed, not days or weeks. Though, it's not as insane as you'd think, probably. Well, the plot itself is insane, admittedly.
Although, perception-wise, to the characters, and experientially, to readers, it will feel as if it all takes place over weeks, instead of a single day. Time flows differently within the crystal, and the broken crystal ball condenses time, and so, whilst in the crystal, Agatha, Sophie, and Rafal experience far more than what several hours would allow in reality.
And, it's not quite time travel, even if that's how it may appear. For a particular, currently undisclosed reason, I'm going to call it "psyche travel," by the term I remember Soman using for ACOT.
Lastly, Rafal will come to dread the prospect of nonexistence, which I intend to treat as a concept distinctly separate from death. Not to worry though! It'll be explained eventually.

(Originally an addon to this post about Ao3 not using an algorithm)
There are FOUR WAYS to get people to read your stories on Archive Of Our Own, and none of them include relying on a nonexistent algorithm to get them to interested parties.
Choose a good title! And yes, there is such a thing as a good title, though I'll admit it's rare for me to see a bad one. Even something as simple as "The one where Martyn forgets the milk" is enough to get me wondering what kind of story earned a title like that. Sometimes a song lyric works super well if it fits the vibe of your story, and sometimes coming up with something of your own might work better. Sometimes making a joke in the title draws more attention if you've written a story that will make people laugh, and sometimes choosing a one- or two-word phrase that catches the eye is all it takes. (If I see a fic called "Poppies, Princes, and Paranoia" I might just get curious enough to wonder what in the world is in that story.)
Write a summary! Please. Please, for the love of god, give your story a summary. Every time I come across a fic that says "haha I'm bad at summaries, just read the story lolz" my first instinct is to move on. By saying you're Bad At Summaries, you're also implying that you're bad at writing, and any potential reader won't take the time to click on your fic and give it a chance when it looks like the author isn't confident in their own work. You don't have to write a masterpiece in the summary section. You can say "Tim has a no good, very bad day. Luckily his partner is there to cheer him up." And look! Ta-da! Summary! :D It's short, sweet, and to the point, and it's miles better than saying you don't know how to write one. OR! OR, if you don't like that either, then you can literally take a short and interesting chunk from the story itself and drop it in the summary box. Look! You're doing great! ^^ You've given a taste of your writing, hinted at what's to come, and caught someone's eye. THAT will hook a potential reader far more than laughing about how "bad" you think you are at writing summaries in general. Self-depreciation may work for a social media post, but it doesn't work to sell your writing.
Clearly tag your work! I'm sure I'm not the first person to say this, but putting clear and relevant tags on your story will ALWAYS bring new readers to your story. Many people on Ao3 search specifically by tag to better narrow the massive sea of stories they'll need to choose from. So tag relevant ships and characters (preferably only the ones that are a primary focus in your fic), tag the proper fandoms, define if it's "hurt/comfort" or "angst" or "fluff" or "crack", and add the main plot concepts where needed. (For example, I'm writing an Amnesia AU, so I tagged it as both Amnesia and Temporary Amnesia, because while the amnesia is a lingering factor in the plot, it WILL NOT BE later, and some people are more likely to read if they KNOW the conflict in the plot will be resolved.) And while I understand not wanting to tag certain things for spoiler reasons (though you should add those once they're revealed in a chapter), I DO RECOMMEND tagging relevant warnings, as well as specifying whether the ending will be a GOOD one or a BAD one. Some readers are more or less likely to click on a story based on that alone. I've specifically taken a chance on a sad-sounding story before because the author said it would end happily, and more often than not I wasn't disappointed! I wouldn't have read a sad story otherwise! Tag that shit!***
JUST KEEP WRITING! People will stick around for a good story! It's true that quality of writing will make a good fic stand apart from a great one, and that comes down to skill. That's not to say people won't read a story that's written by a less skilled author, because if you tag and title and summarize your story well, you'll still draw in readers, and most people will stick around to enjoy an interesting story whether it's 2k works or 20k. But the more you write (and the more you READ), the more you'll learn and the more you'll improve. Don't give up just because you're getting less attention than the next writer. If you keep working on your craft, you'll be right up there with them soon enough. I'm in my late 20's and it took me years to get to where I am. I'm not foolish enough to pretend I don't know I'm a quality writer, but I also refuse to call it "talent" because it's much more than that. It's a skill that I honed over years of writing and storytelling. I learned from my peers and I took inspiration from bigger and better writers to work my way up to where I am now. So don't write just to get hits and kudos, write to tell a good story! And when the comments come in, though they may start small, just know that those people are seeing the passion you're putting into your work...and they're just a small taste of the kind of joy you'll be able to share if you stick with your writing. <3
(BONUS: Share your fics on Tumblr and other sites. If you're worried that they won't get seen on Ao3 without help, then feel free to boost awareness by dropping a link and some info elsewhere. I do this every time I post something new, because I know that part of my audience lives on Tumblr! So don't hesitate to utilize the platforms you've got. Tag it properly on here and you'll get a few more reads from folks who are looking for it!)
***Please remember, too, that "Dead Dove, Do Not Eat" is not a replacement for any bad tags. What it actually means is "What's inside is what's labeled on the tin" ...or to put it bluntly: "Please for the love of god, read what I have in the tags, there's probably some uncomfy crap in here, so READ THE LABELS. You have been warned." If you don't add the tags you're Dead Dove-ing, then the Dead Dove tag is pointless and tells your audience nothing. Be kind and be clear. Your readers will thank you for it.

literati fics: a frazzled curated list
So there’s been a lot of talk on my feed about “fandom coming back” (it left?) and needing to create user-curated lists of fanfic instead of relying on authors to plug their fics.
Well, this is cheating, because I’m going to plug my own fics, too, but I’ve mostly been reading literati fics for the past few years. I don’t see a lot of Luke/Lorelai fics even being written anymore (also, while I enjoy the fics, my opinions on those two are out of line with a lot of other fans) and I got really into reading lit fics about two years ago, kind of fell out of it, and fell back into in over the past few weeks. So with that behind us, this is what I have enjoyed.
Appreciation by ksfd89 : This is a post revival fic about Rory reconciling with Jess and going through the pregnancy and birth. It’s long, but it’s complete, and I have a soft spot for it as it was the first fic in this fandom that I really latched onto. I don’t think it’s on AO3 but I may be wrong.
the weight we carry by @scoopsgf: This is basically a novel of Jess’s life story, from right before he shows up on the show to a few years past the revival. I love, love, love it and am rereading it right now. It does a great job of writing in canon and also filling in the gaps when Jess was offscreen.
wrapped up in books by @scoopsgf: This starts as a season 6 fix it where Rory reconcile with Jess after the meeting at Truncheon but then (spoiler alert) Rory winds up pregnant with twins right as she graduates from Yale. I got to the end of the first part and I was like wutttttttt but the concept actually works?!? So it’s basically Rory and Jess being adorable hipster parents in NYC.
A Society Affair by Ultra: Rory has been raised in her grandparents world when she hooks up with Jess, who is Hep Alien’s band manager. I don’t see this author talked about much here, but they’re responsible for a gazillion Lit fics. Anyway, this is very cute and features a lot of the Chilton/Yale crew as supporting characters without villainizing them.
Met You At The Right Time by @windowsandfeelings: So I really hadn’t read fic for over a year until I came across this one a little over a month ago and got super hyperfixated on this ship as a result of it. Rory becomes unstuck in time the day after her mother’s wedding and starts revisiting points in her past. Makes excellent (and I do mean excellent) use of the lack of info given to us about that eight year gap between the OS and AYITL.
Harvest Moon by @mrsmess: I had heard about this fic for years but never checked it out because well, I guess I’m a moron. Rory and Jess reunite at Luke’s cabin after her grandfather dies. I don’t know why I avoided it so long because I’m a hick and have spent half my weekends at a lakeside cabin since I was a teenager so you would think this would be right what I want in a fic and yeah, it absolutely is. So again, I’m a moron for not reading this sooner. The sequels are great, too.
Starstuck by @mrsmess: Rory and Jess get stuck in a Groundhogs Day time loop the day of the firelight festival in season 4 and have to get themselves out. I loved, loved, loved this concept and devoured the story in an hour or so.
The Long and Winding Road by @stellaluna33: Rory comes to some realizations about Jess as she becomes a mom. WIP, but I’ve very much enjoyed it so far.
If you didn’t see your fic on here, well, I probably didn’t read it yet. But these are my current favorites.
Onto my fics for this ship:
The Morning After: Jess and Rory hook up in Stars Hollow in the summer of 2012, and everyone finds out about it and talks the subject to death. I’m not sure if this qualifies as a Literati fic, honestly: I was less interested when I wrote it in the actual sex itself than the blended family dynamics and filling in some of the plot holes and unexplained stray comments from AYITL (and there were a lot of them). My thinking was that it would be interesting if Jess’s complaint that Luke didn’t give him the wifi password for six months “and I lived here!” was not a reference to the distant past, but an indication that his business failed and he had to come back to Stars Hollow for a while and hooked up with Rory when she was newly freelancing and starting to unravel. I was going to write a sequel where Jess wrote a mosaic novel in part based on Luke and Lorelai’s relationship and got his shit together professionally as a result, but I never did (oops).  Anyway, this exists, it’s complete, but it’s a got an unsatisfactory ending as it is canon compliant. Also, there are a lot of banjo jokes.
A Simple Twist of Fate:  Jess and Rory are reeling from recent breakups of long-term relationships when they reconcile on Emily Gilmore’s living room floor (niiiiice). How will their new relationship handle the pregnancy that ensues? I’ve gone round and round on this on this blog because I didn’t realize until I wrote it what an outlier it was to have Jess deeply involved with someone else (and oh, yeah, it’s written in Rory’s first person POV. Was I high when I decided to do that? Anyway). It’s twenty six chapters of angst and ponderous conversations about miscarriage, guilt, and depression, with some fluff mixed in. Currently unfinished.
Home: It’s a fast forward of A Simple Twist of Fate. Drabbles about Rory and Jess raising their daughter in Philadelphia. I’m currently working on a chapter about the I-95 bridge collapse (what a cheery subject!)
Blueberry Pancakes: Okay, so a long time ago I started a story called Full Circle (it’s in my fic list, but I’m not linking it here because the Literati part so far is basically nonexistent). The idea was that Rory would have lots of romantic misadventures while on the campaign trail while Luke and Lorelai would go to therapy and get married and have babies and do all the conventional stuff. Rory would settle down with Jess and at some point Lorelai and Rory would be pregnant at the same time. This drabble takes place in the world of that story, which is why I’m including it here. The drabble French Fries also takes place in that universe, but Rory and Jess don’t actually appear (although their daughter does).
(Fair warning: the previous two drabbles are in a drabble list where I wrote stories about multiple ships, including Rory and Logan. So yeah, if you read the whole thing through you may get it from the other side. I’ve also re-ordered my canon compliant fics so they appear in a series, and there’s some Rory/Logan stuff in there as well, including the last fic I wrote. They are not endgame, but I haven’t written the stories where Jess wins the ship war. So it is what it is).

Hm…director’s cut of “Life in Plastic”, perhaps?
Oh! Great! I recently responded to this in the fic comments on AO3, but I'd be happy to copy-paste it here! (It felt a little odd just posting an AO3 comment thread here without anyone asking, haha.)
Tumblr media
Oh man, well, like I said, this fic had actually been in the works for a really long time. Like it basically started out with that conversation about the Superman action figures, and I was writing that actually around the same time I was writing 'Scoops!' When I was sharing that dialogue with friends, they kept going, "oohhhh the action figures are going to be relevant later on, right? Like the villain's going to use them, right?" and I really hadn't realized I had written a red herring, there. Which is surprising, because Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" very much uses Superman action figures as a vital villainous plot device, but it honestly hadn't occurred to me. I was working more from the "Superman vs. the Elite" angle where it's Superman being confronted with the aspect of people profiting off of his image.
This is also a fic that I feel gets into the reeds where it's like... feminist brain is actively fighting with dumb horny brain. Objectification was always a theme, and basically the theme of "What you project onto people vs. your actual experience with them and their own interior experiences." You have it starting out innocently with Clark getting flustered about how Lois handles the Superman action figures, but then it progresses into Clark getting disillusioned with regards to his childhood hero's voice actor, and then it turns ugly once you see things from Winslow's perspective and you see how much he's projected onto Darci. And then there's also Lois basically being the object of Winslow's displaced rage towards Corben. Lois being put into that space suit is obviously part callback to the Superman TAS episode where Toyman puts her in that doll outfit, but I also thought it would be fun if you brought that trope in and you just have characters in the story going "What the fuck is wrong with you."
The character of Conroy Adams was absolutely the aspect of the fic I was most nervous about writing. Even more nervous than making Darci NOT a robot. Like, yes, obvious Kevin Conroy/Adam West tribute is obvious, and I really wanted to balance it out by bringing in a lot of jadedness, which was definitely more of a creative liberty because from what I know of Kevin Conroy and Adam West, it's that they really were never that jaded about being Batman, they always had some understanding of what Batman meant to his audience--but there are plenty of actors who become jaded about the major pop culture figures they play, so I felt like exploring that would provide a valuable contrast to the whole Superman thesis of general hope towards humanity. Conroy doesn't really stop being jaded about being Ortus Sigma, but that jadedness in itself ends up being something that allows him to compassionately connect with Darci, which kind of leads back to the aforementioned theme of what we project onto people vs their own experiences.
Also Rannu-Chan and Lois's spacesuit are totally meant to be visual callbacks to Adam and Alanna Strange. Rannu-chan. Planet Rann. I think I'm clever.
Also yay this is where you meet the Yellow Mask, who I scooped up from Radio Serial obscurity to basically morph into a Jack Parsons/Gwyneth Paltrow little freak! I knew I couldn't go full tech-bro with him because MAWS already took that direction with Anthony Ivo/The Parasite, so I thought I'd lean into the freaky corporate colonization of the concept of "Wellness" with him, while also playing around with my own silly Silicon Valley/Santa Cruz weird co-optings of yoga and new age practices.

AAA OMG thank you so much for answering my question! ok ok ok so! first up for the fic desires, right out of the gate - I don't like smut (as a sex-repulsed asexual I find reading about it not fun). also I don't like reading whump that much unless it has a good ending. as for not wanted ships, anything is fine unless it's incest or pedophilia. characters/interactions are a bit harder to pin down, but I know I don't want any fics that involve self-inserts, y/n, or ocs as the main focus, I'd much rather be distanced from the story being told than directly involved in it, if that makes sense? I'd like to read something involving Idia or Ortho or any of the Hades dorm (idk its in-universe name) characters - there doesn't seem to be a lot involving them, at least not that I've found yet. stuff involving the octotrio would also be good, love me some angsty merboys. maybe some stuff with Riddle and the other Heartslybule (idk if that's how it's spelled) students too? if you have any fics involving transformation or body-swapping, those are tropes I really like (I'm reasonably sure that at least some of the Diasomnia students have dragon or half-dragon forms but so far I haven't found anything involving them actually transforming?) In addition, what fics involving the Diasomnia students do you think are the best? (since you are the resident expert in that field, 90% is impressive.) thank you again for answering my ask so enthusiastically, I'm sure you'll be a great help. :)
okay cool beans, ty ty!!! hmm i am,,, unfortunately just abt the worst person you could come to for ignihyde or octavinelle stuff, i so rarely click anything from those dorms. regardless, ill give a list of stuff below!! i will add a little description to give u a feel and if it's something u don't vibe with or a ship u don't wanna read, j skip and try something else, hopefully something here will work for u!
And You Think, "No Escape" (ongoing) GEN – i'm a few chapters behind on this one bc life kicked me, but very good gen fic thus far! mainly focused around the previous overblotters in a weird sidequest treasure hunt forced by some bad guys, with trey and cater in the BG tryna help their situation. VERY long chapters and updates very regularly, so would likely provide a good amount of content
Night Raven Kindergarten (ongoing) GEN – cater is the main char, but he and trey are kindergarten teachers for a selection of the cast as kids!! VERY cute and fun, and delves into the kids' lives at home in rly heartfelt ways that hit, the problems feel nuanced and well-written, and the chars all feel so themselves. whitenoface is the author and i like a lot of their work, i'm recing another work from them later on
Briar Scion (ongoing) Idiasil – p long idiasil fic where the story itself is rly what caught my attention, and now im along for the ride. the premise is rly interesting where essentially like,,, nature itself loves silver, and wants to marry him? so nature is encroaching on school turf while interpersonal romance happens around the plot, its a fun concept! yuu is in it in the bg a bit but its not like,, self-insert or OC, so hopefully u won't mind. updates regularly!
when we don't have the words, chocolate can speak volumes (completed) Idiasil – cute, 30k or so idiasil!! largely focuses on the second years as a group working at the mostro lounge, as silver asks for advice from them respectively and idia works up the nerve in the bg to come in to say hi to silver. mostly just a cute silly story, not as intricate a plot but a fun read!
The Queen's Court (completed) Catervil – first of all, azurith is a FANTASTIC writer, and i highly recommend literally anything they've ever written. this rec branches beyond this fic, but this was my start. this covers cater interning for maleficient herself, and then delves into his newfound connection to the draconias while covering fae history and previous war, etc, it's FANTASTIC and this lore is upheld in a lot of their other work. "Enchanted" is another ongoing work by azurith with cater as a diasomnia student, updates regularly and is very good!! azurith is largely a catervil writer but i think their work is far more important than a preference for ship, i'd rec even if u don't care abt catervil
Snow Is Falling (completed) Cater-focused – idk if u can tell but i like cater interacting w diasomnia content, this is where he goes to briar valley for winter break instead of back home! around 15k, just focuses on his interactions with the diasomnia people while staying with lilia and silver, p short and sweet but v nice :D
devoted malediction (orphaned) malledeuce – of all the fics on this list, this is the one ur most likely to skip. i found this on a WHIM while scouring every existing diasomnia ship tag and was so stunned at the audacity of someone to ship malleus and DEUCE, and to write 140k+ words abt it, that i had to read it. i can't explain it with words,,, the writing style reads so differently than anything else i've ever read, it reads as a STYLE rather than simply reading as 'well-written,' it rly kept my attention. essentially, it's a ...human? au? they're coworkers at a game dev studio, they're human but there's still magic, i can't explain it. there's underground plot-shit with the magic factions or whatever that's so interesting, but it IS orphaned so it'll never update again. i'm devastated. i can't sell this fic to anyone bc of the ship and the length but i enjoyed it very deeply and i'll miss it
Fath-- I mean, Lilia (completed) lilia & silver – ALSO by whitenoface, very sweet familial content of them through silver's life. a 10k must-read for a diasomnia fan
Even a Vanrouge Must Rest (completed) lilia & silver – VERY short and VERY sad but i am legally obligated to rec this. i'd be a bad diasomnia fan if i didn't, very heartbreaking and touching story
Crocodile Teeth (completed) Silsebe – sebek overblot story, decent length and p well written, sebek is infuriating which is Correct for sebek and Correct for someone on their way to an overblot. i've read most of magicalfish's work but i can't rec most to u due to nsfw, this is one of the better silsebe fics out there!!!
Just Out of Reach (ongoing) Silsebe – it DOES update, just not on a regular basis. VERY VERY good fic that FEELS slow-burn, it's 50k+ so far and still feels like the build is just starting up well now. essentially, silver and sebek get in a big fight and lilia magically makes them stay side-by-side till they understand each other, so it analyzes how despite their closeness in their upbringings and how they are partners in their roles as malleus's knights, they don't rly get each other yet and need to cultivate their relationship so it doesn't crumble. very nice story thus far and i look forward to updates!!
WHOOOOKAY that's a lot, i actually don't rly use bookmarks bc i'm typically on incognito on my phone, so i may be missing some, but these came to mind based on ur asks!! if u wanted more for ignihyde, octavinelle, or heartslabyul, i'd rec asking someone else bc i'm truly not the best source ^^;

IT’S HERE!!! IT’S FINALLY HERE!!! This is artwork done for the @dcbtv and specifically for the INCREDIBLE story written by @whitster-lizzy ! Check it out HERE!
Aaaah! I feel like I could geek out over these drawings and the entire process for a long while, so I’ll just throw that rambling under the “Keep Reading” (there will be fic spoilers talked about there too so be warned!).
Hope you enjoy the story! And seriously, go read it!
Hello! Welcome to the ramblings!
So starting with the banner... the concept of what I wanted to do came to me pretty quickly. I thought it would be cool to have the guitar and cover it with some relevant stickers that applied to Dean and Cas. The biggest challenge on the banner was honestly the colors... there are SO MANY cool color options for guitars, but I wanted to be sure that the words, the important story information, stood out significantly. So there was a lot of color tests that my friend sort of “supervised” for me, and finally get the colors fine tuned where you still have the bold red from the KC logo, but it wasn’t the ONLY thing your eye would stay drawn to. XD
Next is the Cas in his room drawing... and boy howdy I am OBSESSED with this drawing! the DCBTV bang was a very collaborative project. There was no “rough draft” to read off of, or “rough sketches” to look at. It was just me, Whitney, and our chosen song. So we had some brainstorm sessions where we pin-pointed the concept for the fic, which would have musician!Cas/football player!Dean, with some high school angst. And of course, you can’t really have an angsty high school story without a dramatic “looking out the window like you’re in a music video”, so I sketched this out:
Tumblr media
I shared it with Whitney, and then she added this scene into the story itself! To which then I was like, “Well heck! Now I REALLY have to draw this!” But I was already at about 50% with the other piece I had done, and so I told myself that if I had time, I could draw this up. I finished the other drawing with time to spare... and then drew up the Cas drawing over the course of 3 days. My brain wouldn’t let me rest until I had drawn it! XD (Also quick fun fact... the poster on Cas’ wall is Totoro, because I was watching that movie for the first time ever while I was coloring it, and I thought it would be a fun little easter egg for myself ^_^ ).
The 2nd drawing (well, technically 1st since I had completed that one first) may look simple... but there were things about it that was NOT so simple! XD The lighting/shading... it was certainly an adventure trying to figure out exactly how this sort of lighting would work. From the spotlights on Cas and Dean, to the lighting of the “peanut gallery” just a little behind them, and then finally the crowd. A lot of playing around with different colors and layer settings, but I found an option that I felt like worked very well! On another note of the collaboration effort for this bang, Cas’ outfit and tattoo design were inspired from reading what Whitney had added into the story. Specifically during the high school years. I read the detail about Cas’ mom making his own version of the “Black Parade” jacket and was like, “Omg that’s gotta be referenced a bit with this drawing now! It’s perfect!” And the part where Cas compares himself to a phoenix instead of Icarus? My mind was blown and I got chills so I had to make a subtle nod to that as well!
Whitney had asked about creating some chapter/section dividers to put throughout the story and I thought it was a great idea! I came up with this design for Dean when we switched to his POV and even little section breaks within the chapter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And these were the designs I came up with for Cas’ POV switches and section breaks:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...wanna know something funny about those musical notes? Got the inspiration from this:
Tumblr media
:3c
I signed up for this bang as sort of a last second decision and honestly I’m so glad that I did! My author was incredible, it helped push me a little more as an artist, and also I got to relive my Jr. High years a bit because this song was honestly the first Taylor Swift song I had ever heard (also a bit of High school because of the angst, but I loved it). Super thankful to have been a part of this!
A huge huge shout out to the mods for putting it together and for creating the event! Seriously, you all did a great job and I’m so happy that this event was received so well!
If you’ve made it this far... thanks for reading! <3

Kathairo’s FFnet Puzzle(Shipping) Fic List...!
Hello! I noticed the lovely user @puzzleshipping-library is trying to compile all the wonderful Puzzleship works from across the cosmos... A truly tricky task indeed. I thought I’d pitch in to help out, but when I went through my favorites tab I realized I uh... had way too many to list for their inbox HAHAHA
So I then said “Ah screw it” compiled them all here! This is a list of some of my personal favorites from our old (and sometimes gold) friend, FFnet, the root of many an older fanfiction writer. Because let’s be real, AO3′s spoiled us all rotten with their tagging system so we no longer got the time to scavenge through people’s ‘Favorite Stories’ and ‘Favorite Authors’ tab to find something decent. So instead, I scavenged through said tabs for you, and picked some stuff I thought was great.
Some notes before you go on though!
All fics listed are SFW, with some minor exceptions (ie.- some might have swearing, others may refer to and/or have death, others might imply smut)
Fics are listed alphabetically, and are tagged with their rating and whether its Pre-Relationship, Platonic, Romantic, either, or both. Summaries are also written.
If you’ve read that and got no problems with it, then proceed! Have fun and remember to show these authors your (many years later) appreciation~

One Shots
Berserker Soul by routavario [Rated T, can be Platonic or Romantic]
He may be broken, but he'd be damned if he let someone like Haga get in his way of saving his partner. If he could just hold onto his sanity a while longer... The train duel from the Orichalcos arc from the Pharaoh's point of view.
It’s as it says on the tin, one designed to collect your tears. And because of that, it’s just as harrowing as you can imagine.
Between Meats and Cheeses by fioare [Rated K, can be Platonic or Romantic]
Yami just wanted to make a sandwich, but all of Japan seemed to have it out for him.
Ahhh the classic ‘Yami Yugi/Atem has a body’ fic feat. a fun scenario, a good light-hearted read!
Can’t Teach An Old Pharoah New Tricks by Crystia [Rated K+, can be Platonic or Romantic]
Yugi tries to teach a 3000-year-old Pharaoh how to text.
This hits the ‘Pharoah can’t modern technology’ trope really well, while still not making him out to be a total fool. A good fic to read if you want a laugh!
Desk Partners by meganeyun [Rated K, Pre-Relationship, Platonic]
"With five empty chairs, Yugi was sure taking one of them wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience to the sleeping student. He quietly pulled the chair nearest him, which took the right corner of the table while the stranger took the left."
A different first meeting between Yuugi and Atemu (I know that’s not how you spell it but I find that spelling cute ok? I use Atemu and Atem interchangably) in the modern era, where Atemu’s a fellow student in Domino High. A cool way to explore their initial relationship.
Dusky Jacinth by Ocean [Rated K+, can be Platonic or Romantic, also features Shadows/Yami Yuugi]
The Shadows have never had to fear competition. But now they find that they do indeed have a competitor when it comes to Yami's affection. It is a cold night for Yuugi when the Shadows confront him.
A fic that features the very interesting headcanon of the shadows in the Puzzle being somewhat sentient, and thus unwilling to share when it comes to the Pharoah. The Puzzleship isn’t as strong in this one, but I like the concept of the fic itself a lot so I thought might as well XD (Banjodog, the one who thought of this idea, also wrote some more fics for it feat. the other Millenium Items. Go check it out if you’re interested!)
Game Over by Maiden of the Moon [Rated T, Platonic, specifically Father/Son Relationship]
Up until that point, he was unsure about fatherhood... which was a nice way of saying he didn't think it was for him. But then his little son was brought out to him, cleaned and wrapped and beautiful.
A very adorable Ancient Egypt AU fic where Pharoah Atemu raises his little son Heba (Yuugi). Its ending however might sweep you from under the rug, so proceed with caution...
Gamer by DreamerofLegends [Rated K, can be Platonic or Romantic]
Nothing like an afternoon of blowing things up to relieve stress.
In-Canon AU fic feat. Spirit Yami that can go corperal and video games. I see this one as more of a visage during the more calmer moments of the boys’ lives.
Ghosts by Silvershadowfire [Rated T, Pre-Relationship]
My take on what might have happened during Atem's captivity in the Puzzle.
Early-Canon AU, fic is it says on the tin, and a very high-quality tin at that. More Atemu-centric, but Yuugi’s mentioned constantly, where we get to see how an ancient pharaoh would eventually become the Spirit of the Millennium Puzzle.
How We Connect by RadioZenn [Rated T, can be Platonic or Romantic]
He shouldn't feel this way. Not when everything was so beyond ok. When everything was so wonderful. This didn't make sense. [cross-posted from my AO3 account]
freshly Post-Canon AU, where Yuugi tries to deal with emptiness in his head after Atem/Yami gets his own body after the Ceremonial Duel. It almost feels bittersweet, in a way, but I think that’s the author doing a good job at capturing Yuugi’s emotions in that moment.
Laughter by DragonDancer5150 [Rated K, can be Platonic or Romantic]
If laughter is the best medicine, it's no wonder Aibou is rarely sick," Yami mused. And his aibou's laughter was bright enough to cure just about any ailment. It certainly did wonders for the spirit's oft-heavy heart.
In-Canon AU, a shorter fic that’s about laughter and the differences between spirit and vessel. However it’s effective in getting the message across, and I love the way the author writes them both ^^
Metanoia by TheOccasionalOne [Rated T, Pre-Relationship]
Yami Atemu doesn't believe in magic or destiny, much less that he's the reincarnation of some ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Yugi Motou is determined to change his mind.
Oooh, a Role Reversal-esque AU! Now, Yami’s the sort-of ‘normal one’ and Yuugi’s the one bearing news of “Hey uh, you and I are kinda special, and we’ll need to go on an adventure for it :)” Note though this fic discusses mental instability a lot due to this Yami’s background, so proceed with caution.
Name by Mitsuye-san [Rated K+, Pre-Relationship, Romantic]
Atem is ten when his soulmate’s name appears.
A beautiful but bittersweet fic feat. Ancient Egypt and Soulmates AU. Atemu’s love and struggle feels impactful, even if we know how his story’s going to end...
Revision Techniques by Serah Villiers [Rated K, Romantic]
Yuugi is revising for his exams; but a certain spirit requires attention.
A fun little story where Yami’s being petulant and Yuugi is forced to deal with it. If you want a more cuter take on the pharoah, then this fic might be for you!
Sensations by Higuchimon [Rated T, Pre-relationship, Romantic]
He could only know his boy by the touches on the Puzzle. But he knew that whoever it was that was putting it together was his. And no one harmed what was his.
And finally, something for Season Zero! It specifically takes place from pre-canon to Chapter 2 of the Manga. I love the author’s way of describing Yami here as well, in all his delightfully deranged and possessive glory.
Seperation Anxiety by RadioZenn [Rated T, can be Romantic or Platonic, but like they’re def soulmates in this one lol]
What would it be like, to go from existing almost completely within someone's mind, in their heart and next to their soul, and then be ripped from it all and expected to function normally on their own? Can one even go through what he's been through without repercussions?
Author states they have separation anxiety, so they decided to apply it to little Yami here. And honestly, I can see that being a thing, especially with all they’ve been through... an interesting read nonetheless!
Snooze by AlwaysYourAibou [Rated K, Pre-Relationship, can be Platonic or Romantic]
Yami looked at the street below, his mind piecing together what happened. He growled slightly. He truly hated everything about the objects in this new world.
Early-Canon AU! If you like stories where Yami discovers the wonders and woes of the world while still trying to protect his Aibou, then here’s the fic for you~
Stand Up or Fall Down by Nicole Silverwolf [Rated K, can be Platonic or Romantic]
Volunteering to sleep under the stars sounded macho but in reality he'd been desperate to escape the oppressive air in the trailer. Honda-centric.
Set in Season 4, so get ready. A bit of a different one from the rest, but the Pharaoh’s perspective’s included, and Honda/Tristan tries to help him pick up the pieces after what happened with Raphael.
The Dark of his Madness by Dib07 [Rated T, Pre-Relationship, Romantic]
Yet Yugi daren't ask this 'other presence.' It gave him goosebumps just thinking about interacting with this spirit, even if this spirit was harmless to him. There was something psychotic: something indiscernible and abysmal in this spirit's eyes. And it frightened him. It reminded him of crypts, chasms into hell: other worlds damned by God. He'd rather not look at those eyes.
Early-Canon AU Puzzleshipping. Yami’s Not Doing So Hot™, and Yuugi’s not too sure how to proceed with him, but whatever it is that’s going on, he’s making sure they can go forward together. Note that this fic features depictions of gore and nightmares and general Not Good Things, because again, Yami Ain’t Doing So Hot™.
The Day We Lost by Ocean [Rated T, Romantic]
How does it feel when you realize that you have lost your best friend? How do you react at that moment? When the situation is out of your hands? Anzu has to come to terms with the fact that she has lost her chance with Yuugi.
In-Canon AU, takes place during the Duke/Otogi DDM battle. As it says on yet another high-quality tin. I’m a big fan of this one because it scratches my particular favorite Puzzleship dynamic, (I like omoyami, which basically means top!Yuugi HAHAHA) and a bonus, it features a different Yuugi from canon!
Yami, Pine, Mint & ReadyBrek by Borath [Rated K, can be Platonic or Romantic]
When Yugi oversleeps, Yami decides to take over and get ready for school for him. For a very old spirit in a very modern world, it was all doomed to go terribly wrong from the start. From Yami’s perspective.
In-Canon AU. Ok, you know how most writers go like “I tried to be funny” for their fics? Now, this fic, hands down, made me howl when I first read it. Hilarious and over-the-top, in very Yugioh fashion. If you need a pick-me-up, this one’s for you!

Multi-Chapter (Completed)
A Compendium of Magic, Violence, and Love by Pr3cIoUs [OVERALL Rated T, Ranges between Platonic to Romantic]
A collection of drabbles and mini-ficlets following the lives, loves, and sorrows of Puzzleshipping.
I say this is ‘Completed’ because 90% of the fics contained are finished relatively cleanly. But overall, I like the various ideas and AUs the author throws around here; they’re all fun in their own little way! Do note that some of the chapters may be rated M, hence my rating tag.
An Alphabet of Puzzleshipping by Auster [OVERALL Rated T, mostly Romantic]
A collection of twenty-six Puzzleshipping drabbles, from angst to fluff and from AU to Canon. Now features up to 27 extra bonus drabbles!
Similar situation with the first, with it being a one-shot collection. These fics also feature various AUs and scenarios, and one of them even got expanded into a proper fic, which I also reccomended below~
Bittersweet and Strange by Erik’s Champion [Rated K+, Romantic]
Season 0 & Beauty & the Beast-inspired AU. The Pharaoh's pendant was their only hope of salvation: if he could learn to love another, and earn their love in return, the Pendant could be reassembled and his memories would be restored. But as the eons passed, the Pharaoh's heart receded into darkness, and they gradually lost all hope. For who could ever love the embodiment of despair?
A compelling fic that does the crossover very well, in that it only really takes the elements of Beauty and the Beast, and puts it into YGO in such a way that it still makes sense. However, while the Puzzleshipping is good, I love this because of the various character interactions! Very reminiscent of the Disney movie, and very good at balancing the tender moments with the funny ones.
Do You Dream of Me? by Laryna06 [Rated T, Platonic to Romantic]
What if Yugi could sense Yami's feelings and thoughts all the time too? A rewrite of their adventures. Mangacentric.
A complete rewrite of the first 7 volumes of the YGO manga, featuring a completely different dynamic between Yuugi and Yami -- namely, due to the former saving him from the Puzzle, Yami becomes a devoted servant, seeing himself as ‘second’ to his Master. It’s a bit of a guilty-pleasure fic personally, but from all the ones I’ve read, this is hands down, my absolute favorite :D
Predestination by S.E. Mellark [Rated T with implications of M, Romantic]
When Atem was just two years old, a peasant and his wife from the lower district of Memphis gave him a gift that, for a long while, the prince could not appreciate.
Ancient Egypt AU where Yuugi’s brought in as a slave for a very young Atem. The story deals with their lives as they grow older, alongside the dangers that grow alongside them. A mix between lovely and angsty, it’s got the bonus Top!Yuugi esque-dynamic (because I like indulging myself) and a surprise ending. So proceed with caution...
The Book Corner by Pr3cIoUs [Rated M, but the content doesn’t actually go that far, there’s just a lot of implications. Romantic]
Yami's problem was that the list of his relationships contained his friendship with Jou, coffee beans, and books. He just didn't understand people. So it's not surprising that when Yuugi walks into his shop, Yami's in for one hell of a crash course.
This fic’s by far the spiciest one in this collection, but I tentatively added it in because personally, it doesn’t hit the M rating for me. Also, I technically cheated because... it’s not marked complete. HAHAHA but! I placed it here because it left the impression of a sequel instead of a next chapter, and it’s complete enough that I think it can stay here. Regardless, it’s a great romantic comedy, with a hilarious ending! Essentially, go read it for a different taste of the Puzzleshipping cake :D
Zoom Lens by Auster [Rated T, Romantic]
The eccentrically French, but brilliant photographer Yuugi finds his perfect model in a shy, unassuming student. But the real challenge is not persuading Atemu to pose…
A three-shot modern-era fic featuring a shyer Atemu and a more bold Yuugi. This fic’s the one that got expanded, so it’s great to read for these concepts alone. However, it’s got its own heartwarming and heart-lurching moments that make it an enjoyable and well-written fic.
Tumblr media
Multi-Chapter (Unfinished or Discontinued - Read at your own risk!)
Or be forced to suffer like meeee ;-;
All the Words Under the Sun by Shamise [Rated T, can be Platonic or Romantic]
Drabble Collection. Through the Hemisphere: When Atem got a new job as a night guard, the last thing he expected was to be abducted by aliens. Well, one alien, who seemed pretty dedicated to turning his life upside down.
Tagged under ‘Unfinished’ because many of the drabbles are connected, and unfortunately most don’t have a clear ending. But I absolutely adore the Hemisphere AU, alongside the other AUs they’ve written out, so I think it’s worth it to see one chapter at least.
Code Name: Neko 5000 by Egyptian Dreamer [Rated T but contains gore, Pre-Relationship]
A rich businessman creates a hybrid by combining the DNA of an ancient Pharaoh and the DNA of felids. His creation wasn't supposed to have a mind of its own, but it does, and escapes into the streets of Domino. With a killing intent too great and too out of control, the hybrid doesn't hesitate to take down all those that meet its path, until it stumbles upon a boy being bullied.
Ok fine another guilty-pleasure one. Look, I love this AU. It’s everything I didn’t know I wanted. First, you got nekos; a classic for long-time fanfiction lovers. But then you got killer nekos, and they’re basically feral destructive machines who... have a strange love for people who look like them. Thrilling, destructive (In that Yami’s put his Season Zero setting to absolute max) and overall so fascinating, it’s worth reading for the horror aspect alone :D
Do You Dream of Me?: Duelist by Angel’s Nocturne [Rated T, Romantic]
Sequel to Do You Dream Of Me? by Laryna6. Read that first. What if Yugi and Yami were bonded before Duelist Kingdom? A rewrite of their adventures, starting at Duelist Kingdom. YYY JM BR SS, Mangacentric
A sequel written by another author for my most favorite fic ever! They did a pretty good job in blending canon with Laryna06′s canon, while adding in their own flair and tidbits. And I love how the dynamics and general situations change up due to Yami being a stronger presence than usual. Well-done, and quite long in spite of it all!
Misconstrued by SilentSpeaker13 [Rated T, Platonic with Romantic implications]
Aibou- def: partner. It's an innocent enough term until Yami makes an accidental slip of the tongue. Hints of Puzzleshipping, pure rediculous born of watching the slashy goodness that is Yu Gi Oh!
“Aibou? What does that mean? Sounds kinda gay...” is the best YGOTAS quote I can use for this fic. Yami’s endearingly dramatic, Yuugi’s entertainingly dramatic, and their friends are just cackling from the sidelines. It’s also technically complete, but since the writer didn’t mark it as such, it’s under this category.
Sympathetic Magic by The Naked King and A Perplexing Puzzle [Rated T, can be Platonic or Romantic]
Two alike objects share a powerful bond. For Yuugi Mutou that becomes particularly true when he is whisked away to Ancient Egypt through means he doesn't understand and meets the one person in the world he trusts most; but this is not Nameless Pharaoh, this the God King of Ancient Egypt...
This fic didn’t go on long enough for me to see the shipping personally, but the dynamic between Yuugi and Pharaoh Atem was still an absolute treat. This fic’s also got my most favorite iteration of pre-Puzzle Sealed Atem in all of ever, being equal parts commanding yet unsure of his position as Pharaoh. A great read that, even unfinished, doesn’t leave off at too bad of a spot!
Yugioh WALLE by wordsorceress [Rated T, Romantic]
A.T.E.M (Altered Time Enduring Maintenance-man) has been carrying out his Directive for over 500 years, but his hazardous lifestyle is about to get blow out of proportions when an A.I.B.O.U probe lands in search of life. For Humanity, Humanoids, and Atem: Life and Earth is about to change.
It’s quite obvious what it’s about ne? Still, I like how their different personalities work in this AU, Atem’s an adorable bean and Yuugi’s a cool badass XD Plus, it’s hard to go wrong with WALL-E, yknow? It’s super long too, so even unfinished, I think there’s enough content to give you some fun!

23 and 43 for the ask game thingy please and thank u
Hello there! Thanks for the ask! :D
23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?
Answered here!
43. If you take/write prompts: what’s your favorite prompt fic that you’ve written?
Ooh this is hard! Why must I choose between my babies?? I've participated in many a fest and prompt event. Orange Blossoms was an indulgence of flowers and poetry (for HP Flowers AND my birthday!) Lover Boy At Play is to this day the most self-indulgent bit of hotness I ever wrote, written for Kinktober 2021. In fact, I'm very fond of most of my Kinkuary & Kinktober works!
But in the end I think it really comes down to 2 fest works.
Collateral Damage was written for Draco-Ron Fest 2021. It was a headache and a half to create. (In fact my first draft got to 10k words before I scrapped the whole thing and started fresh.) (Version 2, which is what is posted, ended up at 16k!) It was such a struggle to get through, but in the end I had a product I was beyond proud of!
The prompt was great. Probably my favorite prompt I've ever seen. I won't share it here since the prompt itself spoils the story a bit, but if you're very curious you can find it at the bottom of the fic itself. A friend of mine left that prompt, actually! And the moment I saw it I knew it had to be mine. It helped that, because I was friends with the prompter, they'd be thrilled with certain plot points I had in mind. I'd never had a prompt inspire me to quite that level before. Self-prompts, sure. Prompts from others? Never! I am to this day incredibly in love with that fic. Which is pretty big considering it's not my OTP!
It was a great indulgence of angst and miscommunication and inner turmoil. While also having fun with the characters. They're such a mess! Draco super bratty and dramatic, and a fun blend of insecure and vain. Then Ron this charming and funny guy who is also very oblivious and temperamental. It's a more lighthearted, fun version of the enemies to lovers dynamic that I don't often get with Snarry. Much as I love it, my OTP can be much too much sometimes!
It does make me unsure if I should write Dron again, though. I did it so well already! I'm not sure anything I write can ever compare. (Though it's not stopped me with a certain other ship, so...maybe I'll get over that hesitance one day!)
A Matter of Time was written for Snarry Adopt-a-Prompt and was posted early January 2022. While Collateral Damage was a fun spot of drama, this was a tragedy. And while the prompt for Dron spoke to me right away, I had a harder time narrowing down AAP prompts, and even once I did I had to tinker around with what, exactly, I wanted to do.
It was a different sort of structure than I normally write. Alternating POVs as well as reverse chronology. And I had it open-ended on top of that! I got to indulge in a bit of outsider perspective, and a secret (taboo) romance. It sort of delved into this awful situation without ever really resolving it. Also, I am dang proud of how it ended. Wow. Talk about a knife to the heart. (Of course I'd be proud of that, haha!)
Also...can we talk about the smut???? Very hot. Few people talk about that. Probably because on the whole it's a very depressing fic and most people are caught up in how depressing it is, but gosh dang it, that smut was good!
Anyway...it was another challenge to write, though it feels less oppressive than certain other fics. If only because I took breaks to write a comedy at the same time (Welcome to the Family for Rare Pair Fest.) It lightened my spirits enough to be able to reach the end without too much of a migraine. And in the end, I had a story I was stupidly proud of. And I considered it my best work until I posted Contempt later that same year!
(Also, I know I was supposed to stop signing up for fests, but...my best works came out of fests!!!! I did not need that to click in my brain now, oh no.)

3 back at you, 8, 30, 35!
Thank you for the ask!
3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?
I'd say dry humour and puns. Even my more serious fics (aka The Pharaoh Parable) usually have some kind of wordplay.
Also — references. Strangely, they are more prevalent in my ladybug fanfiction than anywhere else; even though Edgeworth easily could be someone reciting Beckett, it never feels appropriate.
If we talking outside of fanfiction, it's (magic) robots. I recently discovered I absolutely love writing robots.
8. What song would make a great fic (to either write or read)?
Not a song, but Я сів не в той літак could be a very powerful basis for a fic. It even has an awesome English translation by Malkovych, if I'm not mistaken.
As for the songs, honestly, anything from Vivienne Mort: Вестерн is a GabeNath fic practically writing itself, Екран is a great villain reveal mood, and Той, хто рятує імена has so many banger lyrics. I'd written something myself, if not for the lack of motivation.
30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?
The Orders He Defies was the first fic I've written in English first and with a core concept thought up by another person (it was a Reverse Bang). Honestly, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, even though I regret not finishing Ukrainian translation in time to post on the same day as the original. I discovered dialogues were the easiest thing to write in English, while the rest was a bit of a struggle.
The only other English-first fic I've written is 3 a.m., but that one... is really out there. I haven't translated it, and I'm not planning to, because the task seems nearly impossible.
35. What aspects of your writing are completely unlike your real life?
Well, no romantic love in my real life, as well as no uncontrollable transportation all over Non-Euclidean Ukraine or magic robots anywhere.
Honestly, it would be easier to say what's the same: my humour, the characters sharing my reading habits, and that's pretty much it.

15, 18, and 27 👀👀👀
15: How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?
It's a bit of a mix! Around half of my fics start as a song lyric I've set aside for a title that I'm musing about. A third, I choose a lyric from a song I was listening to while writing the fic - I try to choose thing with relevance to the fic itself and its themes, which can get tricky, but I often find it rewarding when I can see how the title and the story itself are in conversation with each other, almost. The rest I deliberate over as a title that fits the fic itself - usually, it ends up being a play on words or a concept present in the fic.
18: What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic?
This line from Chapter 2 of I wanted everybody else in the world to know it (but I ain’t ever gonna let ‘em take my life from me) is probably my favorite line I've ever written:
“I think you’ll find, Chancellor, that we are very much alive. Care to pick up where we left off?” Mace ignited his lightsaber and pointed it at Palpatine’s head. The light from the blue flames flickered along his metal hand and the hilt, a visible reminder of that almost two decades old battle. But Mace’s stance was as steady as it had ever been.
When I started writing this fic, this line and the scene it comes from was NOT planned at all. I actually had planned to end it quite a bit earlier, right after Mace and Depa reunite with Kanan. But then I wrote Mace and Depa being there for Jacen's birth, and I knew I had to write up the connecting sequence up to that, and actually write an explanation to get Kanan out alive. I ended up using the World Between Worlds, and then it occurred to me that Palpatine might try to get in again. I thought that that wasn't a great idea, but I'd try to write something for that and I'd probably cut it when it didn't work.
Then I wrote that first sentence and immediately sat back to stare at the ceiling. Because I hadn't meant to write the mirror to Mace having Palpatine at lightsaber point in Revenge of the Sith, but it IS! And it's a perfect encapsulation of the themes and motifs of that fic in regards to the Jedi surviving and being resilient; Mace is saying this to Palpatine after he's surprised to see Mace, Depa, and Kanan standinig there in the World Between Worlds, having defied their canon fates to survive. It's the thematic and dramatic climax that the whole fic was leading to, and I hadn't realized that until I wrote that line.
27: Is there a fic you were nervous to post/share? Why?
There've been a couple that I've been a little apprehensive to share; I met a stranger dressed in black at the train station because it was the first fic I'd ever posted and I wrote it in about 12 hours post migraine with minimal editing.
I was also nervous to post Things I found out through hard times and good (I wrote 'em all out in ink and blood) because it's the first and only fic (so far) that I've written with Major Character Death (and one of my first The Dragon Prince fics) so I was somewhat apprehensive about how well I'd actually pulled it off.

My Unhinged Rec List From Remus Lupin Fest 2022
All the fics were great, but there were a few in there that SANG to me. So now y'all get to hear about them. Anyway, going down the list in no particular order...
WOLFSTAR FICS
let nothing you dismay by @krethes
Rating: T Length: 3,107 words Summary: Remus expected to feel anger when he saw his father ensconced in a cabin in frigid mountains of Finland, of all places. ... [But] anger had not come to him, no. Seeing his father there, rail-thin and haggard and a bit mad, had pushed aside all of the negative emotions that had built up over the years. Lyall had never handled grief well—first, the loss of his son’s humanity that drove him to try to cure Remus, and then Hope’s passing pushed him to necromancy—and Remus could no more blame him for disappearing than he could ask the moon to stop rising. He’d only felt relief, and it thawed his icy reservations.
Once again, Krethes and I are same-braining on the matter of Remus and Lyall, except she took it in the direction I couldn't. XD Absolutely adore this version of them, and all the little ways they're similar and different as well, and the very deliberate forgiveness that's present in this story which doesn't come easily -- it's a choice! And it's a choice Remus continues to make over and over again, and that felt right to me. HERE for it. Heads up though if you're going into this looking specifically for Wolfstar: it's present in the story, but very background.
Moonlight Mile by @jennandblitz
Rating: T Length: 17,043 words Summary: Twenty years after surviving the War, Remus and Sirius are, naturally, extremely involved in werewolf advocacy. Their lives are full of it—their support group, passing laws and acts, banishing any kind of prejudice—but one quiet, routine Flower Moon upends their existence; in the best way it could.
This fic is literally one of the most wholesome goddamned things I've ever read in my life, please go place it directly into your eyeballs. Remus and Sirius living out in the countryside with their approximately three dozen adopted animals, and they are Doing Good. (THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD BOIS IN THIS PLEASE GO AND APPRECIATE THEM.)
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy...Best Friend, Brother, Roommate, Lie by @femme-de-lettres
Rating: T Length: 9.071 words Summary: “Sirius and I,” he paused, trying to figure out how to proceed. He’d been wondering for a while if he should tell his mother about the state of his relationship with Sirius, but the time had never seemed right—now included. Or, Hope Lupin keeps count of how many attempts it takes her son to finally admit that he's in love with his best friend.
The gays? Disasters. The Lupins? Iconic. The vibes? Fluffy. Did I mention this is at least half from Hope's POV? Because it is. If you need a fic where Remus just has the absolute best parents, this is the one for you.
Wildflowers by @deathcabformoony
Rating: T Length: 3,493 words Summary: It was Sirius’ turn to smile; a smug and playful grin. In that moment two things became transparently clear to the God of Death: One: it was no wonder that everyone, mortals and immortals and all of the creatures in between, were so taken with the young new god. Two: Remus wasn’t an exception to that rule, much to his own surprise. - - - - A Hades & Persephone AU. Written for the Remus Lupin Fest.
Okay but literally the summary says it all, I am screaming crying throwing up, I am UNHINGED over this entire concept and it is just written so fantastically and their dynamic is just so !!!!! My friend, you just get them. I need an entire series of this injected directly into my veins please and thank you.
NOT-WOLFSTAR PAIRINGS
I've Been Told About You by chosisme
Rating: E Length: 12,527 words Pairing: Remus Lupin/Charlie Weasley Summary: “Charlie Weasley,” Remus deadpans. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were trying to pull.”
The writing in this is gorgeous, and the characterizations are just SO FUCKING ON POINT. I am going to actually just let the opening speak for itself:
There is a vantage point from the northern side of the dragon sanctuary where Charlie Weasley can look out over the Carpathian Mountains and imagine that the world is just that: the peaks of the range rising like the barb-ridged spine of a Norwegian silver, actual dragons curling in tight whorls of scales and teeth behind him, and the sky a call to action. Romania is beautiful in January, when the sun glints off snow and slipstreams down the frozen waterfalls of ice, and the pine trees rise like bear-traps out of the powder. Charlie likes this view especially: it's the view that sank a talon into his heart when he was eighteen and never let him go. He's never met anybody who didn't look at this view and say anything other than: "Wow." Sometimes they say: “Blimey.” The first thing Remus Lupin says is: "Dementor breeding ground."
If you are not opposed to the pairing and your first reaction is not to run towards this fic at top speed I do not know what to tell you, truly.
the grace unasked for by @broomsticks
Rating: T Length: 17,511 words Pairing: Remus Lupin/Nymphadora Tonks Summary: What if… instead of going to Bill's after the Malfoy Manor, Harry and co. flee to Tonks' parents' house, where Remus and Tonks are hiding with Andromeda? How would Remus and the others react and handle this? Remember, Tonks is in her last trimester, her dad just died, she's still being hunted down by Bellatrix and everyone is in hiding, and suddenly Undesirable No 1 shows up with a tortured Hermione, former hostages and a dead house elf and his presence is now potentially threatening everyone's safety.
I am biased AF because I betaed this one and I know how much sweat blood and tears she put into it AND YES I'M RECCING IT TO ALL AND SUNDRY, JUST SKIP OVER THIS PART BESTIE ILU anyway it's a fix-it that both does and doesn't, and the interactions between ALL the characters are so real and powerful and complicated, and there's briefly mentioned past Wolfstar, and just... it's so worth a read if you're even remotely into Remadora, okay? Just give it a go. <3
The Moon Never Hangs Quite the Same by @inmyownlittlecorner5
Rating: E Length: 11,213 words Pairing: Remus Lupin/Severus Snape Summary: Remus Lupin promised himself he would never transfer the werewolf Curse to another living being. After the first war with Voldemort, with his life in shambles, Remus retreats to a cottage in the woods to live out the rest of his miserable life in self-imposed exile. One winter night, a lost soul seeks shelter during the full moon, only to find a caged werewolf inside. Remus's worst nightmare is about to begin.
Okay. So Snupin is usually a stretch for me, owing to their, uh... fraught history, to put it lightly. But this particular author is one that I trust IMPLICITLY with any kind of Snape content in general. She made them make sense. Also, her werewolf lore is just really frickin COOL. (I also definitely didn't re-read this when I went to link it, whoops! Got sucked right back in haha.)
Youthfully Felt by @nymphadoratonqs
Rating: E Length: 9,909 Pairing: Remus Lupin/Nymphadora Tonks/Fleur Delacour Summary: “Mmm, love you,” Tonks smiles and tells him.
“Is that why you want your girlfriend to fuck me?” -- It's two years or so after the war and things have changed for the better, though not a lot. At least not for Remus and Tonks, or Bill and Fleur. Things are different now, but they can still rely on old friends, as well as find new love.
Hi hello yes this is a poly fic with healthy poly dynamics in addition to some spicy smut and I am here for it like yes, I will take my cake and have it too, please. Criminally underrated. Characterization is on point. They all deserve this, and the role choice here was positively inspired.
GEN FICS
a broken pot can still hold water by littleoldrachel
Rating: T Length: 18,562 words Summary: Admittedly, today is perhaps not the day, given that he near collapses into his bed with a groan when he reaches it and doesn’t wake up for fifteen hours. And so this, coupled with the sheer brain fuckery moving back to Hogwarts is wreaking on his already tentative mental stability, Remus feels like a spider’s web stretched taught in a windowpane. Any minute, someone could come along with a Scourgify! and wipe him away. All of this to say, out of all the students he’s mentally noting to check in with, or who he thinks may need some additional support, Oliver Wood is a fairly middling student who slips through the net, a Cornish Pixie unlocking its own cage. Which is why it takes Remus a frankly unforgivable amount of time to realise that Oliver Wood really is Not Okay.
This fic broke me in the best/worst way; definitely handle with care if eating disorders are a trigger point for you, but like... gosh. Remus Lupin, the teacher we all wish we had, and who we all wish we could hug when he inevitably works himself into the ground. This fic handles things with such genuine care and compassion, and also will hit home hard if you've got any kind of neurodivergence. <3
Son of Lughnasadh by @bluesundaycake
Rating: T Length: 12,042 words Summary: There's something in the air on the full moon of Lughnasadh. Remus Lupin settles in self-exile in the Clocaenog Forest, Northern Wales in a werewolf sanctuary. It's nothing like he expected but everything he needed. So what's this unsettling feeling that prompts him to follow his nose to Little Whinging? A Remus-Raises-Harry fic. Set in summer 1985.
I am once again admitting bias because this!!! This was my incredibly specific prompt!!! And of COURSE they knocked it out of the freaking park, because that's just what they do! If you haven't read any of Pahn's work before, know that they write some stellar magical lore, and their werewolf lore here is no exception. AND (!!!) there is a part 2 on the horizon, which I am SO HYPED FOR because this set up is BRILLIANT. Features Ace!Remus and honestly one of the coolest Lyalls I've ever had the privilege to read.
Anyway, those are my personal top fics of the fest, so I highly recommend checking these out, but absolutely go read all of the fics if you get the time to do so! There were some cool concepts out there.

so I used to be rly into MASH like a solid decade ago so my memory of it isn't great, but that time loop post sparked a memory of a groundhog day fic that I was convinced I had read back in the day, but furious searching unearthed nothing and I was losing my mind a bit because I swear I had read a fic just like that!!
anyway I just now realized the fic I was thinking of was in fact a Band of Brothers fic so. that happened.
but this fruitless search did lead me to discover the sheer volume of MASH fic that's on ao3 now so all this is to say, do you have any recs?
Wow I love this story. I've had that experience too though so you're not alone 😭
Now I have to apologize for this response taking a while, I've been busy the last couple days and wanted to take care in compiling this list.
There's quite a collection of hunnihawk fics on AO3 and I have gone through all of them because I don't have any self control. So yes I do have a few recs! You won't see any pwp fics in here, I'm the type who reads fanfiction for the plot lol so keep that in mind. These are in no particular order btw, and I'm sure my list will expand over time but for right now these are my top favourites.
I won't have comments for all fics and for that I apologize. Some of these are incredibly long and I don't have the time to re-read them and collect my thoughts. Whether there's a comment or not doesn't reflect the quality of the fic, only reflects the sieve like quality of my mind and how it cannot hold onto information for more than five minutes.
[This post got very long so I am including the recs under the cut]
HUNNICUTE'S HUNNIHAWK FIC RECS:
~~~
First off I am going to mention my absolute all time fav hunnihawk fic. Let me tell you, it took me by surprise because for mash fics I really don't enjoy mash aus as a concept (I think their relationships and personalities are really reliant on their circumstances) HOWEVER the film noir genre lends itself to mash very well. So I cannot recommend highly enough tallsinspace's hunnihawk noir au, if you don't read anything else on this list (tho please do!!!) you have to give this one a try:
over and over and over again (and the ending still will never change) by Talls [@tallsinspace]
Rating: M, Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence, Words: 28,380
The door opens to reveal a pair of the best legs you’ve ever seen in your life. The dame who comes attached is a treat as well, even with a silk scarf and big sunglasses obscuring her blonde hair and most of her face. She’s in a fashionable little black number that she fills out marvelously under a shorter winter coat, a string of pearls wrapped around her neck.
She looks like trouble. You smirk. Just your type.
“Welcome to Blake & Pierce investigations, how may I help you?” you greet in your most professional tone.
“First, you can pop those eyes back in their sockets, gumshoe,” she says flatly. “I didn’t come here to be leered at.”
-
In which Private Investigator Hawkeye Pierce gets in too deep with a couple of married blondes, runs up against some trouble, and makes a series of panic-fueled decisions. Story of his life.
I usually find it difficult to talk about exactly what I like about fics I read and recommend, however this one really lends itself to comment. Not only are the characters extremely well written, but the plot and situations are as well. This is the kind of story you find yourself paying attention to every word. Also this includes Hawk playing with gender, it works so well and feels incredibly true to character. Really well done.
Nostos; or, the Journey Home by Anonymous
Rating: M, Words: 65,903
The last place Hawkeye expects BJ's journey home to end is his own front steps
This one is special for me. Not only was it the first BJ goes to Maine fic I read, but the first MASH fic I actually read! Yeah it had had an impact, I couldn't read anything else for a day or two after because I remember I was thinking about it non-stop.
Your Love Made It Well Worth Waiting by msculper
"Maybe getting abandoned was like death: inevitable. Maybe knitting was like a machine gun, or mortar fire, or mustard gas: it only expedited the process."
An exploration of the sweater curse as told through Hawkeye's romantic relationships.
Will You Take Me As I Am? by msculper
Rating: T, Warnings: PTSD Words: 7,633
“Why the hell are you here?” The sudden hostility threw BJ off, although he supposed he should have been used to it. Hawkeye had a short fuse since his extended stay at the end of the war. BJ couldn’t help but laugh in shock. “Because I miss you and I’m worried about you?” “You know what Margaret does when she’s worried about me? She calls.”
Rating: none, Warnings: implied suicide attempt, Words: 39,296
Peg leaves BJ. Naturally, Hawkeye drops everything to fly 3000 miles and take up residence in his beach house.
“You okay?” he asks gently.
BJ nods. He’s more okay than he’s been in a long time. “I used to worry that if I were to see you again, it’d be like meeting a stranger.”
“Come on,” Hawkeye says, smiling. “We were never strangers.”
“We can make it a game, for old time’s sake. Tell me three things about yourself, but make one of them a lie.”
AKA a story told through storytelling, and how the truth is usually (but not always) easier to swallow if it tastes like a lie. Featuring M*A*S*H unit sleepover shenanigans, BJ goes to Maine, and BJ’s Complete Lies.
a notion deep inside by kaiyen
Rating: none, Words: 18,472
All of BJ’s letters sit in a draw in his desk. He reads them sometimes and remembers why he stopped writing back. They feel false, cheery in the way BJ used to write to Peg about the war. A story about a life Hawkeye has no place in.
Maybe he’s not doing such a good job of moving on.
or; two people meet at the wrong time and then re-meet at the right one
my guy pretty like a girl by Talls [@tallsinspace]
Rating: M, Words: 12,366
In which Hawkeye wears a dress for the glory of the 4077th and BJ reacts like any normal person would under the circumstances.
Okay so I do remember this one because I love the concept of Hawkeye playing with gender. I think he would look so stunning in a dress and any drag at all. But really my favourite part of this fic is BJ's reaction. Gotta love angsty moment's fuelled by our favourite repressee from California. Also if you couldn't tell, I'm very much in love with talls' writing.
hawkeye is impossible, or so he’s been told.
Part character study, part experimental non-linear narrative, part a place for me to project and put all my unnecessarily specific headcanons in one place, today we’re taking a trip through hawkeye’s chaotic train of thought after being asked a simple question: “tell me about the bus.”
This one has a strong sense of melancholy to it, and I mean that in a very positive way. I found myself really sucked into Hawk's feelings when reading it. If you want something immersive and introspective, this one's for you.
Hawkeye gets back from Korea in July, BJ shows up at his doorstep one night in November. In the time between, Hawkeye writes letters he doesn't send, he forgets a night in Tokyo he shouldn't remember, and he remembers he doesn't like Rice Krispies.
Rating: E, Warnings: Period Typical Homophobia Words: 43, 540
“Do you think she’s alone?” He looked at me with his lips pressed in a thin line. He was studying me; I don’t know what he saw, but he must have liked it fine. “No,” he finally said. “I don’t think she’s alone.” “You’re a special kind of husband, if you mind as little as you seem to,” I observed, and he laughed, a sharp, brittle thing. “You have no idea what kind of husband I am,” he said, and disappeared behind the frosted glass of the office door. He was right: I didn’t have any idea. But I knew I wanted to find out.
When Peg Hunnicutt disappears without a trace, BJ is the prime suspect. He enlists hardboiled Hawkeye Pierce to track her down and clear his name, but how can Hawkeye be sure he's as innocent as he seems?
Yes, this is another noir AU, and it is very different from the last and just as incredibly well done. I especially love the way the relationship between Peg and BJ is portrayed here. And Erin <3 the way that both BJ and Hawkeye take care of her!! I just really love fics that pay attention and include BJ's love for his daughter and his goodness as a father.
BJ has to learn how to find home again. He might actually have to admit that he has feelings.
BJ knows that he and Hawkeye are headed towards something that he has no control over. He can't decide if it's what's going to ruin his life or make it bearable, and he is terrified of the answer.
OKAY
So that was. More than a few... I hope you don't mind? I really wish I could have left a detailed comment for every single one of these but it's been quite a while since I've read most of them. These are all such talented people and I really hope you can take the time to enjoy the words of as many of them as you can.
I've included the tumblr urls of a couple of the authors, if any of you know the urls of more of these authors, please reply to this post or message me and I will add them as well :)
Happy Reading <3
Give It a Good Stirring! - A SatoPika Fic
Tumblr media
[Read on Ao3!]
Rated G - No Warnings Gen Pokemon Journeys Pikachu & Satoshi 995 Words
Summary: Ash and Pikachu are left in charge of making lunch for everyone while on a camping trip to Luminous Maze Forest. It does not go well.
Notes: This version of the fic uses the Japanese Dub Names (ex, Satoshi). Read the English Dub Names (ex, Ash) version HERE. This was written for @ashpikazine ! It was a super fun time! Enjoy the fic =D!
-
It’s rather dim in Luminous Maze Forest, and the grove keeps itself hushed. Trees loop around themselves serving as netting, catching stray words as they slip out into the quiet. Near quiet, at least; after all, the woods whisper, and Luminous Maze Forest catches secrets spilled within it in its web.
Into this hush, a voice speaks out.
“Making Galarian curry probably isn’t that hard. Right, Pikachu?”
Soft, luminescent shadows, opposite to the hue of the mushrooms that cast them, stretch against the side of Satoshi’s tent, a bright, friendly yellow. He’s proud to report it only took four hours to set it up- with Pikachu’s help, of course.
“Pika!” Pikachu squeaks, but whether that's in response to Satoshi’s question, he isn’t sure. It could be directed at the tiny dew drops Pikachu watches slide across the broad plant leaves  surrounding the camp site.
“Come on, Pikachu! Focus! Gou and Koharu are gonna be hungry when they get back from their Ponyta hunt, and I promised I’d have food ready! I can’t break that promise!”
Pikachu turns to look at Satoshi, staring at him dryly.
“Don’t give me that look. It’ll be fine! Now come on, we’ll do it together!”
Pikachu scampers over with little reluctance, as Satoshi grins and begins rummaging through his backpack. Mushroom curry sounds like a good idea. They must have picked up enough on their journey into the tangle to cook up.
Pikachu lets sparks jump off his ears, catching on the pile of wood beneath the pot. Fire rises up in a flash, flickering in quiet orange.
“Here’s one mushroom!” Satoshi declares triumphantly. He tosses it behind him without looking, and Pikachu bats it into the pot whole. “Here’s another!”
This time the mushroom lands straight into the pot, a large splash spraying up.
“Here’s… Uh… Actually that’s it.”
Satoshi sticks his head up, peering over at the pot.
“You think that’s enough?”
Pikachu shakes his head.
Satoshi sighs.
“Yeah… probably not. Let’s see what I can substitute. Pikachu, see what you can find, too!”
“Pika!”
Satoshi turns his attention back to the bag.
An apple kinda looks like a mushroom, doesn’t it? And cream is white, like mushrooms… or some mushrooms, at least. Satoshi tears the stem off the apple and throws it into the pot, then pours in the entire  carton of cream. The mixture grows thick and bubbly — “Pikaaachu!” — but Satoshi has already turned towards Pikachu before he notices.
Pikachu carries an armful of berries in all different sizes, with an additional Momon Berry balanced on his head.
“Amazing, Pikachu!” Satoshi exclaims, eyes sparkling. “Drop them all in!”
It would be a waste of Pikachu’s efforts not to use them all, right?
In goes the Momon Berry, along with three Oran Berries, two-and-a-half Lum Berries, and what looks like a Pinap Berry stuck to a Oban Berry.
The mixture is very thick, and an odd shade of green. Like Dent’s hair, or maybe Mao’s, (both of whom would probably scold Satoshi for the crimes he had committed against the concept of edible food if they saw this.)
Pikachu waves his tail in front of the flames to help them grow — to admittedly little success.
“Pika…”
“It was a lot easier with the fans the scientists had, yeah, but I don’t see a fan around here and the next best option is Gou’s spare research notes. If I brought those anywhere near flames I think he’d send Suicune after me.”
“Pikachu!”
Satoshi grabs the largest spoon he can out of their bags, which is still travel-sized and relatively small.
With great determination, Satoshi grips the handle and stirs as hard as he possibly can.
It’s actually impressive how much curry doesn’t spill, but that doesn’t stop Pikachu from complaining when some of the sauce splashes his tail.
“Piiikaaaa!”
“Sorry buddy!”
Even if the mixture is getting so thick it's difficult to stir, even if it wiggles like an ill Metamon, Satoshi proceeds with vigor.
“Alright. Next is the most important part, Pikachu.”
“Piiika?” Pikachu runs up Satoshi’s leg, hopping up onto his shoulder.
“We gotta pour alllll our love into it!” Satoshi declares, sticking his hands out over the concoction. He screws his eyes shut, Pikachu doing the same, and thinks. He fills his thoughts with happiness, all his love for his friends, his adventures, his Pokémon, all the regions he’s visited, and Pikachu. Pikachu most of all, all their journeys together, everything wonderful they’ve shared.
No matter how much love they poured into it, though, the curry still looks rather… dubious.
“Well… we tried.”
It’s an ordeal in itself, scooping out the mixture to serve, parts of it clinging to the pot.
Satoshi stares at his plate, the “curry” still squirming, slightly.
Pikachu eyes his plate with equal hesitancy.
“Well - here we go!”
Satoshi closes his eyes as he shoves everything on his plate into his mouth, Pikachu doing the same simultaneously.
They stare at each other for a moment.
And then immediately spit it back out.
“It’s bad it’s bad it’s bad it’s bad!”
“Piiikaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!”
Without prompting, Pikachu launches his best Iron Tail against the pot, splitting it perfectly in two, the curry oozing out onto the dirt.
“That pot belonged to Koharu…”
“Pika.”
Satoshi looks over at Pikachu and vice versa, the mushrooms’ glow casting the pair in soft pinks and purples.
“You know, Pikachu, I think I’m starting to remember why Mama won’t let me cook anymore.”
And for some reason, that’s what sets them both off laughing. They’ve never really been good at cooking, after all. Even after all these adventures, some things don’t change!
“Satoshiiiiii!” Gou’s voice echoes through the trees as he and Koharu approach. “We’re hungry! Are you done cooking?”
Satoshi and Pikachu share a glance, looking down at the spilled curry and back at each other.
“Uhhhh… about that…”
“I knew it…” Koharu sighs. “Come on, you two. We’re all going to Arabesque Town and getting a pizza.”
Cupbearer (Eren/Reader)
Tumblr media
Part III
Part I
Part II
Part IV (in progress)
Warnings: MINORS DO NOT INTERACT (im watching you, if you see this, begone!), vampire!eren, hunter!reader, fem!reader, smut, some amount of predator/prey dynamics but only kinda?? there is also a significant age difference but only cos eren is immortal and all that jazz. we're all adults here. there will eventually be smut.... and do i really need to say that there's gonna be blood in a vampire fic?
Description: A story of falling in love in 4 parts.
Eren is a bad man (well, a bad Creature) who has done bad things. When he meets the great-great-great granddaughter of one of his former friends in his favorite blood bar, however, he thinks it might not matter so much what happened in the past, so long as he can make the future something worth living to see.
Ao3 link here
After that night, it became increasingly hard for (Y/N) to leave, and for Eren to let her do so.
Something between them had changed. There were moments— when Eren would press feather-light kisses against her forehead, when he would casually leave a cup of her favorite tea where she would find it— where (Y/N) felt as though her heart might burst. It was all the little things that baffled her, all the ways in which he seemed to understand exactly how she felt; it was as though he knew her more than she knew herself. On the mornings that she would wake in his bed, sleepy and sticky and wholly content, (Y/N) wondered what it would be like to have this life forever.
Other days— on days like today— she was reminded exactly why that could never be, and it broke her heart.
Today, they had planned a romantic dinner in the park, an evening under the stars. It was supposed to be something special, a little getaway just for the two of them; they had wanted to leave as soon as (Y/N) was relieved from her patrol, so Eren had moved her things to his place, hoping that they could leave together from there for their evening alone.
In and of itself, that was fine… but when (Y/N) came in, covered head-to-toe in viscous Creature blood, Eren was furious.
“And you call me a monster,” he growled, looking her up and down with hate in his eyes. “I can’t believe you.”
He stood from his seat on the sofa, and (Y/N) began to back away, still wary from the fight she had narrowly escaped from unscathed. Her every instinct told her that she should run, fire a round of silver bullets into his chest, but she steeled herself, doing neither.
“It’s not my fault— they were attacking a civilian,” she told him as he stalked towards her, his face twisted into a horrific scowl. “I tried to stop them— tried to find out what was going on— but then they came at me with their claws, and I was left with no choice.”
“There is always a choice,” he snarled, and it was then that anger filled (Y/N) from the soles of her feet to the crown of her head. "They were probably terrified of you— how could you possibly blame them for lashing out?"
(Y/N) grit her teeth.
“This, from the man who thought genocide was his only option to the same problem?”
Eren made a low, warning sound in the back of his throat, but (Y/N) pressed on.
“You would rather me have died?” she demanded, stepping into his space. “Would it have pleased you more for my body to bleed out on the pavement, ripped to shreds by an aggressive werewolf? Would you even care, or would you just find the next blood bag and move on with your life?”
“Maybe so,” he shot back, “Then I wouldn’t have to deal with your insufferable mouth.”
That stung— but if there was one thing (Y/N) knew how to do, it was to strike back twice as hard as she had been struck.
“Fine then,” she said, turning on her heel. “I won’t bother you any longer. I’ll go out and find someone who actually wants my company, someone who’ll fuck me good and proper over the counter at some hole-in-the-wall bar over on Easy Street, someone younger, with a nicer cock and less fucking baggage— ”
She didn’t get to finish the sentence, or even walk a single step further— Eren grabbed her by the hair and pulled her to him, his fist painfully tight against her scalp.
“Wanna say that again, to my face?” he asked, tilting her head back.
“I’ll go find someone else to fuck me,” she spat, struggling in vain against him. “I’ll spread my legs for the next available schmuck in the closest bar I can find, so you can hear me scream his name and not yours.”
It was a low blow, to threaten a vampire’s claim on something they had previously assumed had belonged to them, but (Y/N) didn’t care. She had almost died today, and she’d be damned if she was going to take shit from anyone about what she had to do to survive. If Eren wanted a fight, she would damn sure give him one.
“Like hell you will,” he told her, pulling her head back so that she had to strain to remain standing. “You’re mine. Flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood— you are my Companion.”
"I belong to no one!"
Those words ripped from her throat and echoed throughout the empty house, and it was then that Eren stopped, looking at her with calculation in his gaze.
"You're right," he said, releasing her hair. "No mortal can serve two masters, lest they love one and despise the other; an archaic religious concept, but an accurate one nonetheless. You've made it abundantly clear where your loyalty lies. I was a fool for thinking otherwise."
(Y/N) began to tremble. "Eren, what are you saying?"
"I release you from our pact," he replied coldly, his eyes so dull and lifeless that it sent a chill down her spine. "No longer are you bound to be my wine-press— I free you from me."
"Eren—"
"Go," he commanded, and (Y/N) felt terribly, horribly empty.
Once, he would have told her to come freely, go safely, and leave something of the happiness she brought him; now, he gave her a cold dismissal, and it frightened her more than she was willing to admit. Still, she went, feeling hollow and used, and she didn't bother to shut the door behind her as she turned to walk home, weary from the day and sick from fighting.
Armin had lived for a very long time, but even so, he had yet to meet anyone so foul of temper as Eren when the Hunger was on him.
"Eren, you have to feed."
The vampire, as ill in health as in temper, glared weakly at him. "I'm not hungry."
"But you are Hungry, and don't pretend like you don't know what I'm talking about. Look, if this is about that girl—"
"I told you not to speak of her!"
Ah, so it was about her. By the looks of him, it had been two weeks since Eren had fed; Armin would bet that he hadn't seen her in the same amount of time.
"If I need to, I'll drag her here to make up with you myself," said Armin testily, "I refuse to watch my best friend starve himself because he refuses to feed on anyone else."
"You will not touch her."
Armin rolled his eyes, but didn't say anything further. He just patted Eren's arm in farewell and set about finding the little lady who was the root cause of his current consternation.
It took longer than Armin had anticipated to find the young woman who had, for all intents and purposes, completely unraveled Eren's composure; her scent, while thick and memorable in Eren's apartment, was hard to track otherwise. Armin spent two hours just wandering the city while trying to catch a breath of it here or there, and when he finally did manage to catch a whiff of her scent and follow it to her, he understood exactly why it had been so hard to track her down.
The girl was a Hunter, of all things.
When Armin found her, she was knee-deep in sewage, her knife embedded to the hilt in the skull of what appeared to be some species of winged reptile. Armin, having been a tad desperate and not actually having been expecting to find anything when he lifted the lid to the man-hole on 32nd and Main, was surprised to say the least— and when (Y/N) ripped her knife free and readjusted her stance into a defensive one directed at him, his surprise turned to intrigue.
“Er, hello there,” he said, scratching the back of his head. “I don’t suppose you’ll take my word for it that I just want to chat, will you?”
Curiously, the words gave the woman pause. She relaxed her stance ever-so-slightly, and then her eyes lit up with recognition.
“Armin Arlert?” she queried, craning her neck up to see him. “Is that you?”
This one grows curiouser and curiouser, he thought, but responded affirmatively.
“Can you give me a bit, then?” she asked, kicking the corpse of the Creature she’d just killed. “I’m not exactly fit for company. Perhaps we could meet later for a discussion over tea?”
“I’m afraid it’s urgent,” he said as she knelt to decapitate her prey— likely for proof of victory. “I think you know why I’m here, so you understand that time is of the essence.”
She didn’t look up at him as she replied.
“If this is about Eren, then I don’t have time to talk.”
Her tone was hard, bitter, and matter-of-fact, and it reminded Armin so much of Jean that it hurt… but just like Jean, Armin would bet that she could be won over by appealing to her inherent sense of human decency
“He’s suffering (Y/N),” he said, awkwardly crouching above the manhole so that she could better see the truth written in his eyes. “He won’t feed.”
“That’s hardly my problem.”
And oh, how well Armin knew that state of mind. If there was one thing Eren Jaeger knew how to do, it was push away the people who loved him most. Armin had dealt with that particularly lovely quirk of his for centuries, and it never got easier to deal with no matter how much time passed. If anything, it got more difficult the older they both got.
“When you’re the solution to a problem, you become a part of it whether you like it or not,” Armin replied, patient and understanding. “He cares for you.”
(Y/N) looked up at him then, fury in her eyes.
“He hurt me.”
Armin shrugged. “He hurts everyone he cares about. It’s just who he is. Nothing comes for free— least of all the love and loyalty of someone as old and as powerful as Eren.”
“Your heart may be toughened to his meanness,” she told him, the head of the creature she’d slain in her hands, “But mine is not, and I don’t like him well enough to willfully remain for him to use as an emotional punching bag.”
At that, Armin couldn’t help but let loose a wry grin.
“No,” he said, “I should think not; but I do think you love him well enough to make sure he doesn’t starve himself to death because he can’t have you.”
(Y/N) was silent for a long moment, then she crossed her arms.
“I won’t come crawling to him. He’s going to have to come to me.”
Armin grimaced. He wasn’t looking forward to that conversation.
“Is that at all negotiable?”
(Y/N) shook her head. “Absolutely not.”
Well, there was nothing for it.
“And you will let him feed if he comes to you?”
(Y/N) thought, then nodded. “If he proves himself deserving.”
Armin couldn't help himself; he laughed. Eren might have met his match in this one.
"Very well. I'll work my magic, and you work yours."
She nodded and bade him farewell, but before Armin left, he paused.
"Hey, (Y/N)?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you."
With that, he left her, ready to take Eren by the ear and throw him at her if he had to.
***
(Y/N)'s heart was racing as she opened the door, knowing good and well who would be behind it.
After her little talk with Armin— and the near heart attack he had given her in the process— she had called in to Zeke and told him she needed to go home to deal with an emergency. A replacement for her patrols had been sent, and she had come home to wash the grim from her skin, making herself as presentable as possible with the time she had. (Y/N) was worried, so worried, that the filth she had been wading in earlier would have left a lingering stench, or even that it had affected the taste of her; she had scrubbed and scrubbed until her skin was raw, hoping to erase every last remnant of her day from her skin…but as it turned out, she needn't have bothered.
Two, three, four hours later, and Eren hadn't shown— it was only now, right at the six hour mark, that he had decided to come to her.
Needless to say, (Y/N) was… less than pleased, but when she opened the door to find Eren pale and drawn, with dark circles beneath his eyes, her heart softened ever-so-slightly. It seemed that Armin was right; he had been suffering.
"You look like shit," she told him quietly, opening her door widely to let him in.
"I assure you, I feel worse," Eren grumbled, but stepped in as she closed the door behind him.
For a long, awkward moment, they just looked at each other, silent and unsure. It was unsettling how unlike himself Eren seemed; he was almost soft when he looked at her, and (Y/N) didn't know how to feel about it. Eventually, though, like two opposite ends of a magnet, they were drawn together, and Eren brushed a piece of hair back from her face.
"Hi," he said, his voice low and rough. (Y/N) caught his hand in hers before it could fall from her hair, and she pressed it against her chest, keeping it trapped there, touching the skin above her beating heart.
"Hey."
They watched each other a moment more before the dam broke between them, and they both spoke at once.
"I'm sorry."
A shared grin, a shy laugh— and then (Y/N) said what they both were thinking.
"You need to feed first, and talk later," she told him, her hand still clasped in his. "You're not off the hook, but I doubt we can have any real conversation with you like this."
Eren nodded gratefully, tugging at her wrist— his usual biting spot— but (Y/N) shook her head, indicating her neck. The thickest, richest blood, she knew, would come from there; and if there was ever a time to be generous with the placement of Eren's bite, she figured that it would be now.
The worst of it was over quickly. There was a brief sting at the intrusion of razor-sharp fangs, and then the vaguely uncomfortable feeling of having something poking down into places that decidedly should not be poked at all, but then (Y/N) quickly eased into the rhythm of the act, focusing wholly on the way Eren's lips felt against her skin. In a few moments, she would become pleasantly light-headed, and then Eren would pull away and look at her like she'd hung the stars. Oh, how she'd missed that look! (Y/N) found herself longing for it even before she quite realized it.
And then, without warning, a vision came, and (Y/N) was swept into another world entirely.
The evening sky rolled endlessly out towards the horizon; it seemed to go on forever, sparkling with more stars than (Y/N) had ever seen before. The full moon was so bright that it cast the whole world in what seemed like silver sunlight, and (Y/N) wondered how anyone could sleep on a night such as this. It was far too beautiful an experience to miss.
Alongside her— alongside Eren, through whose eyes she saw the world— strode Armin and two older-looking cadets who she recognized from previous memories as Reiner and Berthold. Eren was feeling anxious over something, and Reiner and Berthold were… well, they were kind. Reiner especially seemed to be like an older brother, and Eren admired him.
"You'll do just fine tomorrow," said Reiner, placing a large, warm hand on Eren's shoulder. "I'm certain of it."
The memory ended, and (Y/N) came back to herself as Eren's tongue laved over the wounds his fangs had left in her neck, sealing them.
"See anything?" he asked, his breath warm against her skin, and (Y/N) nodded.
"You loved them, too," she said softly, remembering the fondness Eren had felt as though it had been her own. "You loved the Hunters that tried to take everything from you, and— and I think they loved you, too."
Eren pulled away from her, and it was then that she saw the tears shining in his eyes.
"Yes," he replied, his voice broken. "We were children. How could we not love each other as God intended? Hate was never in our nature; it was an inheritance that we couldn't escape."
He paused for a moment, then spoke again.
"I'm sorry I hurt you," he told her, cupping her cheek in his hand. "I lost my temper. I forget— I forget that you're not them."
And (Y/N) understood. She understood that no matter how many centuries passed, there would be wounds that just wouldn't heal for Eren. He would lash out at things that wouldn't make sense to anyone who hadn't experienced the horrors of war as he had. Suddenly, she felt petty for having lashed out as she had, and guilt threatened to rise up and choke her.
"You're forgiven," she replied, leaning into his touch. "It takes two to tango— I shouldn't have baited you like I did. I knew how badly that would hurt you, and that's exactly why I said it."
At that, Eren cracked a grin.
"I expect nothing less from a Kirschtein. Your grandfather would have punched me square in the jaw— and as big as that bastard got when we were older, he probably would have put me on my ass."
(Y/N) couldn't help but laugh, and Eren joined her, their combined joy swelling until there was nothing else in the world but their happiness.
How they started kissing, neither one of them would be able to say afterwards, but in the grand scheme of things, it hardly mattered. Their love was too large to contain, too much to hold back— and it was love, (Y/N) realized, though she hadn't quite put words to it yet. She loved Eren Jaeger, a Creature, a monster, as much as her grandfather before her had and more. She loved him with a desperation that felt like being knocked over by an ocean wave and plunged into depths where her feet no longer touched the sand. She loved him more than she had ever loved anyone before.
And, as he placed her gently on her bed that was barely big enough for two, divesting himself of his shirt above her, (Y/N) thought that maybe she didn't mind it so much as long as he loved her in return.
"I missed you," said Eren, dropping kisses by her ear as he unhooked her bra. "I missed this."
"Me too," she gasped as his mouth wandered to her nipple, her hands fisting in his hair. "Oh, God, I missed you too."
The time for words was soon gone, however; Eren's sinful, sinful mouth traveled lower and lower until he was kissing at the insides of her thighs, parting them to access what lay between, and (Y/N) threw her head back as he spread her open with his hands and sucked brazenly at her clit.
How long he spent there, worshipping her sex, (Y/N) had no idea; all she knew was that she came once from his mouth on her and a second time from his fingers inside her, and when he finally, mercifully withdrew, she was broken down to the simplest parts of herself; there was nothing left but an affection so deep that it threatened to overtake her if she didn't let it out, and she did the only thing she knew to do to release the overwhelming pressure that was building in her chest as Eren pushed his big, veiny cock into her.
She told him what she should have said a long time ago.
"Oh, Eren," she gasped as his cockhead shoved deep inside her. "I love you."
As soon as the words came out of her mouth, Eren went unnaturally still. He looked at her with pupils blown wide inside emerald eyes, and his fangs slightly distended; in any other situation, (Y/N) might have laughed at how surprised he seemed, but it seemed as though she were frozen in time, unable to do anything but stare earnestly up at them, hoping he understood how much she cared for him.
"You… what?"
"I love you," she repeated, her body moving without her permission to roll her hips up into him, moving his cock even further inside her. "Please, Eren, I need—"
He cut her off with a forceful, bruising kiss, and his hips started making slow, deep thrusts inside her, her legs hiked up over his shoulders.
"Again," he said against her lips."Say it again."
"I love you."
Another thrust or two, a hand circling her wounded throat.
"Again."
"I love you, Eren."
"Again."
This time, it was only a whisper.
"I love you," she said, and Eren began fucking her in earnest.
"You are so fucking beautiful," he told her as he thrust hard and deep inside her. "You're every man's dream, a nirvana the damned such as myself were never meant to reach. (Y/N), you are everything, and I—"
He seemed to choke on the words, and (Y/N) kissed him as he tried to regain his composure.
"I don't deserve you," he said, shaking with the force of their passion. "I don't deserve your love."
It's not about deserving, she wanted to say, It never was, but then she was coming again, her climax contracting her walls around her lover, and it was all she could do to remain conscious as Eren fucked her relentlessly through it all, chasing his own high.
It was only later, after a shower and something to eat that they finally spoke again. They were back in bed, and Eren's arm was wrapped around her, as though he were afraid to let her go for even a moment; truthfully, (Y/N) thought he was asleep, but then his breath tickled her ear as he said,
"I love you, angel."
And that, (Y/N) thought, had been worth it all, in the end.
