Final Boss!
—————————————————————————
Idia Shroud x R.femele. (Player number)
—————————————————————————
.
.
Ignihyde dormitory game room.
The blue light of the monitor reflected on Idia's face as he bent forward, his fingers dancing on the keyboard with a speed that would make any mortal brake. His blue locks floated more intensely, accompanying the heat of the digital battle.
- "NO, NO, NO— what do you mean she deviated from my ultimate again?! What kind of reaction is this, a perfect frame?!" - he shouted, his voice too loud for his introverted standard. - "She's a monster."
You were sitting in the corner of the sofa, lying down with your cell phone in your hands, a smile contained on your lips. Pretending disinterest, you watched the drama of your boyfriend who, as much as he was a genius, had not yet put the pieces together.
- "You're still fighting that player... what's her name again?"
- "Zero.San.666," he said with reverence and terror. "The biggest of all. The legend. The shadow that has haunted the rankings since I was 13 years old."
You turned your face, biting your lower lip to contain the laughter.
- "And how are you doing?"
- "How am I-?! I'm like the number two of the entire server and yet she destroys me! With build troll! I tried three different setups today... I was even humble! And even so she read me as if she had access to my... my source code!"
You layed on the couch, looking at him with a mischievous glow.
- "You'll see, she knows you too well."
Idia snorted and turned the chair.
- "No one knows me well. Neither in person, nor digitally. Just Ortho and... you, maybe. But you don't even play this game, so you don't count."
You laughed, and he frowned, confused by your expression.
- "What was it? You look like someone who dropped anime spoilers and didn't tell anyone."
You got up, went to him and leaned over, lightly touching the edge of the keyboard.
- "Hout if I said I know Zero.San.666?"
- "WHAT DO YOU MEAN? DO YOU EXCHANGE MESSAGES WITH HER?!"
- "Not exactly..."
You quickly typed on his notebook, accessing the same server, and logged in with your account. When the screen loaded, the name Zero.San.666 appeared at the top - with the MVP signature and the legendary avatar that only the top 3 had.
Idia froze.
Absolute silence.
Only the sound of the "ding" of the system recognizing the account and the trophies.
- "You... are... the..." - he stammered, his hair starting to sparkle in light purple, a sign of imminent emotional collapse.
You shrugged, innocent:
- "Number one champion for four years. Secret rival. Your girlfriend. Nice to meet you again, Shroud."
Idia pushed the chair back with a thud and got up so fast that she almost stumbled. The eyes were wide, the hands trembling.
- "You're the final boss. The elite. The unbeatable player who destroyed my dignity in infinite duels, and I... I KISSED YOU YESTERDAY!"
You laughed so loudly that you almost fell sitting down.
- "And you thought I wasn't going to make fun of you today..."
Idia walked in circles, muttering:
- "This is like... the biggest plot twist of school romance + shounen anime + guild betrayal. My heart wasn't programmed for THAT."
He stopped. He looked at you. A little red, a little panicked... but very impressed.
- "So... do you mean you've seen me wearing a pink rabbit skin and still kept dating me?"
You crossed your arms.
- "I thought it was cute."
He fell to his knees.
- "Marry me."
You laughed and went to him, gently pulling him back to reality with a touch on the cheek.
- "How about you beat me first, Player Two?"
Idia stared at you, her hair calming down slowly. Deep in the eyes, in addition to shock and shame, there was pure admiration. Because at that moment, he realized that:
• You were more than the understanding girlfriend.
• It was the rival who always made him want to be better.
• And, above all, he was the only person who really spoke his language.
- "...You're my final boss. And my safe checkpoint too. That's kind of unfair."
You smiled, squatting until you faced him.
- "So let's play. As a team. This time, together."
And there, between laughter, monitors and legendary avatars, Idia Shroud understood that the real game he wanted to win... was to keep you by his side.

All or Nothing: Noel Noa (ft. Jinpachi Ego)
(note that this analysis contains heavy spoilers for Noa's motives in my Big little dramas fic)
What I really like about Noa is that his character, with his questionable coaching decisions and personality... Actually very evidently grows from his backstory.
We only know a few things for sure about Noa's background before Blue Lock: he grew up in the slums of Paris, where he invested all of himself to get out of that hole, he's ex-boyfriend rival of Jinpachi Ego, with whom they diverge in their ideologies and approaches to the striker's game, and he's the idol of little (and adult) Isagi Yoichi due to the fact that he plays rough and focuses on his success rather than his teammates.
On top of that, we also know that Noa was probably forced into Blue Lock. Most likely, the club management put him in front of the fact that you was specifically requested by your ex rival, so go and shine with your face on a TV show. Oh, and bring along our resident bouquet of personality disorders, code-named kainess. Noa certainly doesn't want to show off for the camera like Lavinho or Chris, doesn't want to raise the next generation of players to avoid his mistakes like Snuffy, and certainly isn't looking for friends/good play/rivals like Loki (who only came to the top 5 to evaluate the level of Blue Lock players according to his own words). Even if he'd wanted to see the sprouts of Ego's theory I doubt that he will apply for the participating in Blue Lock voluntary.
Tumblr media
Because Noa doesn't really care. This whole mess is just out of his field of interest. Outside of the games we only see him sitting in his room staring endlessly at screens and drinking coffee.
But it's from this that we see that Noa, despite his very... die-or-die method of building a game on the field, is a responsible player and coach. He may not want to mess around with kids in front of the world, but if he took the job, he'll do it. But he will do it exactly the way he demands of himself - no more, no less. Noa is neither cruel nor kind - he doesn't go beyond what his contract asks of him and his principles.
Slightly off-topic, I'd say that's the exact difference between Noa and Ego. No one would accuse Noa of conscious cruelty: he acts within his system, which he has explained to the children in advance, and if they fail it is only their fault for failing to adjust to it. He is simply doing his job - nothing more, nothing less.
Ego, in his turn? He chooses to be cruel even in the system he have built himself. Not because it somehow motivates the children, but because he can. And in doing so, Ego doesn't hate them - he probably doesn't care about any of them. He hates in them a part of the player he once was - the player who lost either to Noel Noa or the entire football world. If not to the both at once.
But even so, it seems odd for the manga to highlight their rivalry. It's not that only very few people have different ways of dealing with children. A lot of people are losing ugly to each other.
But this work with kids is the main root of their rivalry. Because the basics of their motto, their starting point of football, the way they guide children to the game are diametrically opposed.
Because the key point of Ego theory is that the striker is created by a moment of chaos. A moment that cannot be directed - that can only be pushed towards.
Except that for Noa a player hoping for a miracle and not knowing something is nothing. He will never allow that in his team - his whole game, his team and his life is one big formula with coefficients chosen once, like a neural network.
Tumblr media
Both of them live as a part of the all-or-nothing game. Except that while Ego plays this game with emotion and involvement, Noa approaches it as logically as possible.
And only Isagi Yoichi can resolve this decades-long conflict.
Now let's go back to Noa's game, to understand why logic is that important to Noa and the player's emotions are insignificant and even get in the way.
Remember exactly how he plays on the pitch. He never comes out to play first like other master strikers. He chooses the midfield position to support the player of his choice - he doesn't steal their shine in the center of attack. He only scores a goal once too, in the first match - the rest of the time he blocks other master strikers in an effort to ensure the kids can play fair.
And that's probably why he openly mocks both Lavinho and Chris with his dry jokes about narcissists and "kids without the proper adult". But he's especially harsh on Snuffy, angrily mocking him for being bitten by "his own dog", bringing back the "don't make my job harder than it needs to be" line. But why does Snuffy deserve this treatment (not taking into account the way Snuffy himself ridicules Noa)?
Because Noa is disgusted with his approach to teaching.
In fact, it's their approaches in the Blue Lock cut that are most opposed, and yet turned on to the max. While Snuffy has gone so far as to give each player an individual program and plan in his strategies, Noa has let things slide, making his stratum a mini version of the Hunger Games. Noa is angry that Snuffy babysits his kids; he's angry at how involved he is in their lives, how Snuffy swirls around them, and how Snuffy is always there to help and support them.
Because Noa is a "give a hungry man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach him to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime" kind of guy. Except that he won't even teach them voluntarily. Players need to get the right advice from him themselves while framing the question correctly.
Noa's policy is non-interference.
Because he knows from experience that it's the only way kids grow up strong. From his own experience.
And to fully dive in, let's remember another moment from the manga that characterizes Noa the most. His advice to Isagi.
Tumblr media
"Dedicate every hour, moment, second of your life to a goal. Don't think irrationally. Get your thoughts in order. I don't pick irrational people for the team. Dedicate your whole self to the goal."
Pretty cool, huh? Blossoms with potential burnout, a life on automatic, and a complete loss of feeling.
You know what I'm getting at? That's exactly the lifestyle Noa lives with. And he doesn't see anything wrong with advising Isagi to do it. He doesn't get annoyed by people's taunts about him being a machine and incapable of feeling. That's probably what he wanted.
Tumblr media
Because Noa himself grew up completely dedicated to a goal, switching off all his feelings and without mentorship, and it made him who he is now. And it's rational for him to follow the same path with his kids.
Because feelings are illogical. They're weird, they're scary, they're very hard to predict. They're exhausting, they make you turn back to the past and wait for the future with hopes that may not be fulfilled later. They take your strength, they hurt and they wound very sharply. They make you weak, they make you vulnerable - they make you a helpless child.
Living without them is so much easier.
(If you remember my analysis on Isagi, you can see how similar he and Noa are.)
In psychology this mode is called "detached protector". Its essence is that the child or adult turns off all their feelings to avoid punishment and focus on survival.
They switch off all emotions. They cut off all emotional ties with loved ones, family and friends, seeing them more as objects. They can only work endlessly.
They function like a robot.
This mode is triggered when a person cuts off all their emotional needs, like an automaton focusing on one single goal.
In Noa's case? His survival. And that's exactly what Ego is talking about - that young Noa, obviously emotionally deprived, put all of himself into football because he had nothing else but it.
Tumblr media
And judging by Noa today, having cut off those needs as a child, he doesn't see the point in experiencing them again. Noa doesn't smile, he doesn't get upset or frustrated. He doesn't get angry or regretful. Of course, mentally stable people can express their emotions weakly too - and even on a level like Noa.
But we're in a football manga. Football is all about emotion.
And the fact that Noa doesn't visually show the joy or at least the satisfaction of a goal or a victory - of the life that little Noa once strived so hard to live, investing all of himself - is just awful.
Of course, Noa has feelings, just like any other person. After all, he is a living being. Except they're either quite faint (because strong emotions = danger and weakness), or he crushes them as soon as he feels them coming on.
Noa's whole life is an endless race to stay where he is.
Because Noa has learned to survive. Of course, he did.
But Noa didn't learn how to live.

this is old n i posted this on my priv on his bday but thinking about kunigami and how his ego was always doomed in a way because it's so rigid in terms of following fairness and morality.. (・_・; something that can only go so far in blue lock. sure he had insanely good physical stats but when you're paired with players who have the ability to balance both, you're not going to make progress. his desire to play and follow his internal moral code, to give everyone a chance because he believes so strongly in fairness holds him back from his individuality without him realizing it.
this is why this panel just always makes me realize that shidou was one of the few people to put that together as well. something i think he doesn’t get enough credit for. shidou is someone who would give something straight to you and it's for your own good. shidou's comment really raises a deeper question- can the guise of fairness prevent you from reaching your fullest potential? like apply what he is thinking to real life situations. shidou's comparison is certainly… one way to put it, but, it is literally just that. you're not proving your worth. you're dulling your own shine without realizing it. sometimes you need to be unfair to others in order to be fair for yourself. you can't hold fairness as a high virtue when in reality it's just a limitation.
literally always ruins my day because was the person kunigami became really a player fostering that growth and truly someone going through a genuine evolution or nothing more than just a product of a system? an experiment? was kunigami- a boy who just dreamed of playing soccer and someone who believed everybody deserved a chance, someone who spoke up and fought for those he loved, diminished for the sake of the selfishness of a man who wanted to level with his rival? sobbing EGO WHEN I CATCH YOU .. i fear that kunigami was a doomed character from the start- he traded one form of restriction for another and he's too far gone to turn back. sure, he's gotten better, but, at the same time i think that there had to be some way for him to embody the heroic ego that made him who he was and still become a really good player. like sure he's strong now but at the end of the day he's replaceable. there's nothing there anymore to make him stand out the way he once did. i’m so sad bye (◞‸◟)

A Mouse Among Owls? - Chapter 01
Fandom: Murder Drones
Warnings: Background Character Death, accidental baby acquisition
Characters (so far): Serial Designation V, Uzi Doorman
┈┈┈┈
A vibrant yellow cross stared at the small thing on the floor. The feathered beast’s head tilted slightly to the side trying to figure out what it was. She felt her tail gently swishing behind, disturbing the ever-so-frigid snow. Serial Designation V’s thermal sensors detected heat emanating from it, the object’s red-yellow-green colours contrasted against a sea of blue.
Pained and terrified cries were still echoing near her. Their source was a worker who was in the process of dying. The disassembler lacked any care for its pathetic whimpering. In her opinion, their suffering made great background music. Maybe she would record it and add it to her internal audio collection folders so she could listen to it during boredom spells.
There was no need for pity; the gashes inflicted on the lesser drone’s chassis would make it soon go into FATAL ERROR by oil loss. At least, it wouldn’t be a lonely death since the rogue machine would join their fallen peers around them. Dark liquid haphazardly painted the cold surroundings, its tantalising smell as if seducing the killer angel for a taste.
No need to rush things, the workers wouldn’t return to life and flee nor would the winged lass allow any other rival disassembler to steal her sweet spoils. Normally, V would be playing and taunting with the remaining worker on its deathbed but her focus remained on the mysterious item. By reviewing her recent memory files, the metallic beast recalled it had been thrown near her feet when she dove from the sky and attacked the wandering group of toasters.
Perhaps it had been a distraction attempt? SD - V doubted the workers were smart enough for that, they were nothing more than mindless machinery. Maybe their rudimentary AI had come up with the conclusion that less weight meant it could run away faster.
The interesting oval-shaped object was wrapped by a purple and white rabbit-themed blanket, what was once snug around the thing now had noticeably loosed but still concealed the small hidden item’s identity.
She kneeled and leaned forward, both clawed hands on the snowy ground, as if essentially cornering the motionless mystery would improve the inspection. Carefully, a finger-blade lightly tapped the fabric only to feel something solid underneath. V licked her chops and removed the blanket just enough to reveal its contents.
It was like her servos had frozen; even Serial Designation V’s tail stopped dead in the air. Neon purple eyes, hollow and shaking, adorned with stress lines, stared back at her. The stare remained locked into each other’s visors until the nearby sound of sobs stole the smaller robot’s attention. Mangled worker drone carcasses were on full display, and the twin moons’ tender light made their spilt oil gleam beautifully. One had yet to pass away, its off-putting sounds worsening the situation tenfold.
A strangled whine escaped the pill baby’s voicebox, momentarily restraining itself, before scaling into full grating wailing. V’s stringy tail lowered to the ground and curled up around one of her pointy legs, the toxic yellow cross on her visor quickly was replaced by normal drone eyes. The disassembly machine had an unreadable facial expression, her body was as still as a statue except for her quivering claws.
“Shit shit shit shitshitshit,” were the words the murder bot gal started to scream within the confines of her mind. Mind, core, and code began to caterwaul against each other as if trying to bend the rivalling wants to its will by being the loudest.
Drones like her were made to adapt to every environment and situation with the sole goal of completing their mission. Yet this scenario was new; she had no prior experience, and the expected outcome would surely leave a bitter taste in her jaws. What was she supposed to do when every part of her was in conflict?
Serial Designation V’s gaze briefly wandered to the suffering, bleeding, worker not far from them. Its suffering was finally reaching the end, the rogue machine would be of no help if it was dead. The untrained neural network wouldn’t last long if V allowed them to “flee” together, other predatory robots would be attracted by the dark sweet liquid leaking from their wounds. She doubted the thing would even make it very far, a few metres and the drone would undoubtedly collapse back on the polar desert’s cold surface.
“Maybe… maybe I could just leave it he–”, the usually fierce disassembly machine shook her head. Starvation would claim the tiny aluminium infant, a drawn-out demise if not found by others, and terribly agonising for a being who isn’t familiar with neglected hunger pangs. Stabbing through its CPU would be quicker and, hopefully, less painful. Furthermore, it was unlikely another disassembler would terminate the thing if they stumbled on it. “Too little oil, not worth the effort,” they would probably think to themselves.
V lifted a single, trembling, sharp blade ready to spear through the artificial baby’s visor. Seconds passed by, the deadly claws hovering over its smaller form, and she couldn’t compel herself to do what was supposed to be her job. The ferocious hunter, the one who enjoyed prolonging her prey’s misery and experimenting with how much damage it could sustain before permanently shutting down, was reluctant to tear a UNN to shreds. If other squads became aware of this, they would surely crack up at this fact.
Poor thing was crying its speakers out, scrunched LED eyes, wiggling erratically on the ground. So utterly defenceless, they couldn’t even try to turn tail as it lacked any limbs, under the claws of an oilfeeder. Looking closely at the thing, it resembled the– Nope, not thinking about that right now!
No living being stays young forever, untrained neural networks get older and moult from their infantile shape. When this one achieved the milestone, it would die by her claws or by her teammates. And if the pill drone died before that due to someone else’s actions, that would still be alright. V will turn a blind eye, as long it isn’t her fault.
SD - V swapped her claws back to her ordinary hands and gingerly cradled the robot infant close to her chest. The embrace was warm, so different from Copper-9’s freezing winds. For that moment the taller being’s fans were audible to the pill drone, the proximity allowed so. Her cries decreased in intensity, the gentle back rubbing and the ceasing of death gurgles lulled the tiny one into quietness. Bawling took a toll on the pill baby, making it enter SLEEP MODE. Dormant in a monster’s arms, killer of her kind, it was comforting nonetheless.

Day 6 - Raul’s Perspective
I woke up on the third day of the walk, fully relaxed and ready for what looked like a smooth day from Esposende to Viana de Castelo. The path took us away from the coast, which meant no more boardwalks and lots of granite pavers to traverse.
Garrett was moving extra slow this morning from a combination of lack sleep and a painful foot, so the pace was slow. A good day for smelling the flowers and enjoying the journey. After all, the sign on the tree said "Dont run along the way, enjoy."
I planned ahead during breakfast and made a croissant ham and egg sandwich for the road. Or, for Cat's benefit: a ham and egg beignet.
Once again the weather was amazing, hovering in the mid 60's with a clear blue sky. As we passed through one of the small villages, one of our fellow Camino travelers tells us that there is a really cool cafe just off the path. Since this was supposed to be a fairly quick walk, we decided to take advantage of the local fares and make as many stops as we wanted without worrying about the time.
The cafe tuned out to a shrine to Che Guevara, the worst assassin in Fidel Castro's revolution and a hero to communist sympathizers around the world. Every inch of every wall was covered with Che memorabilia. I thought of turning around, but I knew Garrett was up for a stop. I should have taken this as sime kind of omen. (Ed note: dun dun dun)
The easy paced, laid back walk became a hike through a mountain, which was an unexpected treat at first that turned into an exhausting afternoon. The mountain path reminded me of the forested paths through the Acadia National Forest in Maine, complete with rushing water and an ancient stone foot bridge.
Coming out of the forest we still had hills to climb, but these were made of granite pavers and had Garrett and I comparing heart rates when we reached the top. That led us through deeper into the mountain, followed by harrowing walks alongside high speed rows and ultimately a long steel bridge with a narrow pedestrian walk once we arrived at our destination. What we thought was going to be an easy 12 mile hike, ended being the hardest walk thus far, a grueling 17 mile trek that took us over 9 hours to complete, given all of the stops we made.
Viana de Castelo is a gorgeous metropolitan city, probably rivaling any on the Iberian Peninsula in its beauty. We are both dead tired and searching for our hotel, but we both have differing addresses. I have a Hotel Laranjeira and Garrett has O Laranjeira Pensione.
We try his address first and it looks to be a restaurant and not a hotel, so we walk the three blocks over to the one I had an address for and they did not have us registered. So we walk back to the Pensione and sure enough, that was the right spot. Above the restaurant they have 9 small guest rooms that they rent out, so they are basically a small hotel with a restaurant below.
We are so thankful to arrive. It is now around 6:00 and all we want to do is take a shower and relax before dinner. I make a reservation with the restaurant below for 7:30.
The Pensione does not have a front desk like most hotels. The restaurant staff basically checks you in and takes you to your room. We get to our rooms and Garrett's suitcase is in his, but my backpack is not in my room. I inquire with the nice young lady that checked us in, but she does not recall seeing a backpack among the luggage dropped off by CaminoWays.
Well this is not good, since the most important job in a company like CaminoWays is to deliver their customer's luggage (besides booking their itinerary). I call CaminoWays (with Garrett's assistance since there is not much that I have done that has not required Garrett's assistance (Ed Note: having traveled with my dad before, this is PRECISELY why I sent Garrett on this trip) and he has more than made up for giving me the wrong lock box code in Lisbon), and they quickly assure me that they will find my luggage.
Twenty minutes later they call back to say that they found the backpack and the tranport company will bring it to me. Huge sigh of relief! We get a text a few minutes later from the transport company that I shoud have the backpack in 20 minutes (it is now around 7:00 and I am still in my grubby walking clothes and shoes).
Time passes and no one shows. I get nervous so I call the transport company and no one picks up. The answeing machine says in Spanish that they are closed for the day. It is now 8:00 so between calls back to CaminoWays, we decide we may as well have dinner. I am now on call with the CaminoWays emergency help line lady (Monique) telling her that if they want to stay in the business of delivering their customer's bags, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY PROMISE TO DO, then she better find what happened to my bag because the transport company did not deliver it. (Ed Note: I can only assume this strong reaction is due to low blood sugar.)
After some time, she calls back apologizing profusely because she can't find my bag and has no way of getting hold of the transport company at this hour. She promises me that I will have my bag first thing in the morning.
My grilled fish, by the way, is very tasty. I am a dirty, stinky mess but with a glass of wine and some good food, I begin to calm down. Garrett offers me one of his T shirts for tomorrow and I begin to ponder what it might look like if my backpack with all of my clothes and things for a month long trip is truly lost. I will probably need to miss the next leg of the Camino while shopping for new clothes that CaminoWays will be paying for. (Ed Note: A classic overreaction. Like the time he “almost didn’t make it out of Austin” because he had a stomach bug the day before his flight.)
Then I wonder how the transport company could send us a text that they found the backpack and I will have it within 20 minutes, yet they never deliver it. Then Garrett says "What if they delivered it to the other Hotel Laranjeira." Of course they did!! We made the same mistake confusing the two earlier.
I quickly call CaminoWays and explain our theory. Within minutes she calls me back and confirms it is there. I finish my meal and walk over to the 'other' hotel and there the desk clerk was waiting for me apologizing. He did not check his registry when the transporter delivered the bag to confirm if I was a guest. Had he done so, he would have realized it belonged to the Pensione and not the Hotel. "This happens all the time," he says. It is 9:30 PM when I finally stroll back in with my backpack and a much relieved look on my dead tired face.
All is well that ends well. (Ed note: Geez tell that to Monique)

Backstory
Born to the magician Macário “MJ” Agostinho and Homo Magi Catarina, Mariana was raised between sleight-of-hand and sorcery. Her childhood was shaped by the risks of magic—after trying to resurrect a pet rabbit, her father took on the cost of the spell, leaving him weakened. Lesson learned: magic always comes at a price.
At 16, she became a hunter—tracking supernatural threats while finishing high school in the American South. Think: Zatanna’s stage magic + Dean Winchester’s teen trauma.
Later, in New York, she trained under the mage Paul Nelson (ex-boyfriend, now literal Hell resident), and fell in love with Jonathan Carter, another mage. Their attempt to stop a magical apocalypse left her father dead—burned in a ritual gone wrong. She now distrusts magical institutions and runs her own business, "s,anairaM"—a multiverse mail service and spellcasting shop.
She lives dangerously, loves fiercely, and laughs in the face of demons.

Back in 2022 at the annual Code Conference, where tech luminaries submit to onstage interviews, an audience member asked Apple CEO Tim Cook for some tech support. “I can’t send my mom certain videos,” he said; she used an Android device, which means she can't access Apple’s iMessage. Cook’s now-infamous response: “Buy your mom an iPhone.”
Cook’s remark and Apple’s recent decision to block the third-party app Beeper from bridging the Android-to-iMessage interoperability chasm are two of the many examples of allegedly monopolistic behavior cited in the US government’s antitrust suit against Apple. Central to the case is Apple’s practice of “locking in” iPhone customers by undermining competing apps, using its proprietary messaging protocol as glue, and generally making it challenging for people to switch to other phones.
Those accusations are backed up by lawyerly references to the Sherman Act. But the complaint also shows the Department of Justice crafting a cultural narrative, trying to tell a technology tale with a clear message—like an episode of the crime drama Dragnet, says antitrust expert William Kovacic, who teaches at George Washington University and King’s College, London.
The Apple antitrust lawsuit, filed Thursday by the DOJ and more than a dozen state attorneys general, claims that in addition to degrading the quality of third-party apps, Apple “affirmatively undermines the quality of rival smartphones.” Because messages sent between iPhones via Apple’s proprietary network appear in blue bubbles, but those from Android phones appear in green and are excluded from many iMessage features, Apple has signaled to consumers that rival phones are of less quality, the suit alleges.
The suit includes references to the negative cultural and emotional impact of the restrictiveness of some Apple products. It ranges beyond the typical antitrust case, in which investigators might focus on supracompetitive pricing or the conditions of corporate deals that restrict competition. The core of US antitrust cases has long been proving consumers paid higher prices as a result of anticompetitive practices. But a few key paragraphs within the 88-page filing mention the exclusion and social shaming of non-iPhone users confined inside green chat bubbles, distinguishing this case from some of the more recondite explanations of tech market competition in recent years.
“Many non-iPhone users also experience social stigma, exclusion, and blame for ‘breaking’ chats where other participants use iPhones,” the suit reads. It goes on to note that this is particularly powerful for certain demographics, like teenagers, who The Wall Street Journal reported two years ago “dread the ostracism” that comes with having an Android phone.
The DOJ argues that all of this reinforces the switching costs that Apple has baked into its phones. Apple is so dominant in the smartphone market not because its phones are necessarily better, the suit alleges, but because it has made communicating on other smartphones worse, thereby making it harder for consumers to give up their iPhones.
Legal experts say this social stigma argument will need much stronger support to hold up in court, because it doesn’t fit with traditional definitions of antitrust. “What is Apple actually precluding here? It’s almost like a coolness factor when a company successfully creates a network effect for itself, and I’ve never seen that integrated into an antitrust claim before,” says Paul Swanson, a litigation partner at Holland & Hart LLP in Denver, Colorado, who focuses on technology and antitrust. “This is going to be an interesting case for antitrust law.”
Regardless, the DOJ’s complaint builds a powerful message from the cacophony of consumer voices that have vented frustrations with iMessage’s lack of interoperability in recent years. And it’s part of a broader, democratizing theme introduced by Jonathan Kanter, the assistant attorney general for the DOJ’s Antitrust Division, says Kovacic, who previously served as chair of the Federal Trade Commission. “Kanter basically said, ‘We’re trying to make this body of law accessible to ordinary human beings and take it away from the technicians,’” Kovacic says. “Storytelling is overstated in some ways, but my sense is that a lot of work went into this filing.”
Apple has rejected the DOJ’s allegations. In an earlier statement to WIRED, Apple spokesperson Fred Sainz said that the lawsuit “threatens who we are and the principles that set Apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets” and added that its products work “seamlessly” together and “protect people’s privacy and security.”
Cultural arguments about the harms of the iPhone’s stickiness will resonate with a lot of consumers, even if they end up being legally indefensible. Blue bubble vs. green bubble messaging has become a much more mainstream debate that transcends the wonky, technical underpinnings of iMessage’s protocol. Apple has also consistently boasted of iPhone and iMessage’s tight security, while seemingly denying third-party apps—such as Beeper—the ability to offer a similar level of security between iPhones and Android phones.
Apple has suggested that the design of iMessage is not anticompetitive, because iPhone users can install and use any third-party messaging app they please, as long as it’s available in the App Store. Apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Signal can all be installed on iPhones and give messages sent from users on Android or iPhone equal treatment.
The DOJ takes aim at that, too, saying that these other apps first require opt-in from consumers on both sides of a conversation because they form closed systems of their own. And the case points out that Apple hasn’t given app developers any technical means of accessing the iPhone messaging APIs that would allow SMS-like, cross-platform, “text to anyone” functions from those apps.
Swanson says he still believes Apple has been careful to take the necessary steps to legally preserve consumer choice, which is one of the fundamental principles in US antitrust law. “You probably can’t do sophisticated messaging on a T9 phone these days,” he says, referencing the predictive text system that dominated before the iPhone popularized touchscreens. “But there are plenty of other options in the market that won’t deprive you of a network effect.”
Kovacic believes that as the case continues, the DOJ will have to bring forward new evidence and arguments to stand up the cultural aspects of its suit. That could involve tapping theories of economics and the psychology of human behavior to attempt to explain why some technology consumers may unconsciously favor certain products they are emotionally attached to. More likely, he says, the DOJ will have to present contemporaneous business notes that show Apple’s anxiety about competitive apps or emerging technologies, and how the company responded in apparently dubious ways.
One way the DOJ tries to stand up its allegations is by comparing Apple to an earlier antitrust target: Microsoft. In a historic antitrust case filed in 1998, the DOJ presented evidence that Bill Gates’ company was fearful that software like the Netscape browser could weaken the market power of Windows, Kovacic says.
Steven Sinofsky, a former longtime Microsoft executive, wrote in a highly charged blog post on Saturday that he suspects many of the suit’s arguments about Apple’s products will prove to be irrelevant. “Almost all of the [DOJ-Apple] battles will end up being about the terms and conditions of contracts which is the stuff lawyers and courts are good at, and not on product design,” he wrote. “The vast majority of the settlement in the Microsoft case ended up being terms and conditions licensing Windows.”
In other words, the DOJ has shown some of its cards in this initial complaint—and told a story that will resonate with many frustrated smartphone users. But to keep the case alive the agency will have to present additional, concrete, evidence that Apple’s anxieties about its products being devalued led it to act in ways that caused actual harm. If the DOJ wants to make the case against Apple as historic as the one against Microsoft it will have to prove, as Kovacic puts it, “that the anecdotes aren’t just storytelling.”

Hi, Chen, can I ask something about Blue Lock? See, I never read the manga (anime only), so I'm way behind. But, is there really a scene where 2 male characters (non family) said I love you to each other?
So, for almost a year, I was challenged by my friend to read/skim selected manga series (mostly shounen), and made a bet. Because my friend said most bromance is more romantic than actual BL. As long time BL fan, I disagree. But I think I'll lose the bet. Those moments between rivals and best friends, are just so....
Then I read about Blue Lock. Please tell me it's just fanon or fanfics (maybe?)....
Hmm I don't think I remember a moment where any character says that they explicitly love another character in Blue Lock? I would say Shidou is pretty heavily queer coded and takes quite a (romantic) liking to Sae, but I don't think he says I love you or anything like that lol. So I am inclined to say that's maybe more fanon, though I more consume Blue Lock content through my tumblr mutuals mainly so I'm not even entirely sure on that either. Oh, Kunigami is basically canonically bisexual as well.
And hmm idk what genre ends up being more romantic, BL by nature I think right? Typically that would be written to be explicitly romantic, compared to shonen which, to be fair can be on purpose, but also I think sometimes happens on accident as well lol. But at the end of the day it's up to the reader to draw conclusions yk.
Edit: Najma did point out to me that Bachira does say that he loves Isagi at one point, though it was a thought, it wasn't expressed out loud, so take that for what you will lol.

For “Power of the Eons”, these are the dragons from ‘the 36 Dragon Prophecy’; that are in the Ultimate Alliance to save all the realms. From left to right: the 3 Mage Dragons (Thrill, Mixxy & Knighty), x7 Heroic Dragons (the Middle 7) & Dark Chain Gang Members And Affiliate (Diesel & Faint, Yowza).
Tumblr media
Spyro’s friends from the many titles, I have changed James Byrd from a penguin to a phoenix. The other oddity is Slashette, she is Ripto’s daughter. She will emerge in the Dragon Code MMORPG stories. Long story short, she is the estranged daughter with full knowledge of her father but wants nothing to do with him. Even after he finally learns that he had a long lost daughter; she is a dark green raptor.
Tumblr media
All of my favorites from the All Stars of PlayStation. That will be on the good side of the Ultimate Alliance. Side note, I recently learned that the original Tomb Raider was created as Latina. In honor of that & always wanting less whites around; I’m having Lara Cruz instead of Croft. Portrayed by Roselyn Sanchez.
Tumblr media
Through out my many stories of the fanfic; these are characters throughout the epilogues. On the left, I’m including Brian & Stewie Griffin because; why not? Have you not played the Multiverse game? Twilly Via & Pearla Lajur are members of a rival motorcycle gang named, ‘Illegal Siggies’. Not sworn or arch nemesis to the ‘Dark Chain Gang’ (On the Lower Right Hand Corner). Twilly Via is a pink seahorse & Pearla is a white echidna. Mr Juicy & Sassori Azure are allies to Gnasty Gnorc, Angelica Pieces (the Sorceress), Ripto & Red the Dragon. After many stories of the MMORPG; they will join this Ultimate Alliance to ensure their survival (They are a black moose & a blue/white griffin.). Juggernaut is an Executioner, galactic class; from the Elven Realms. He is amongst the Top 1,000 List, in the 25 Bracket. He joins the Ultimate Alliance for survival purposes. Omnikov & Clovier Yéyé are friends of Chlorox. Too powerful, just like him… Omnikov is a shadow & Clovier is a bumblebee. The Dark Chain Gang joins because of their connections with Diesel & Faint. Not the entire gang joins this Ultimate Alliance because there are going to be multiple through out the story. Luxroc is a black orc, Miara Milan is a ladybug & Riotburn is a human.
Tumblr media
the Apocalypse Order is a group of the Top 1,000 List; they are all of the 25 Bracket. It’s safe to say, they are the most powerful grouping that joins this Ultimate Alliance. Species List, from left to right; Fitty Crown the Gator, Ashinei Jei the Angel, Laezono the Woodian, Gravelle the Gargoyle, Nivea the Starz, Raelia laVonya the Angel, Joonto the Eagle & Zadreggus the Platypus. This is my first version of Zadreggus; as he is also a character in the Crimson Collective. As a human…
Tumblr media
Fortune Seekers Unlimited is comprised of a group of children brought together by the Unlimited Club. A scientific group that is based in Ireland. They work in all of the realms, for the study of super powers & as erowo ordinance lords (the super power police). Essentially, that’s what the six of them are. Investigators & law enforcement. They will be 20 years of age at this point of the fanfic. & yes, that is Handel & Greta… All members are human, as the Ultimate Club is based in the Humanoid Realms. All of the members aren’t from the Humanoid Realms though.
Tumblr media
TMNT joins this Ultimate Alliance because they deem it is the most Ultimate out of those formed.
Tumblr media
As stated before, Everglow inspired Nevergleaux. As stated before, these are all dopplegangers of Everglow. Born in the Mirror Realms eons ago & have been causing nothing but migraines to all of the realms. Being the opposite of Everglow, they are one of the reasons the Mirror Realms were locked so long ago. They were trying to get to what the Power of Eons is based off of; a weapon of mass creation. Anyone acquiring it will be able to make their own universe; anyway they see fit.
Now excuse me while I go back to working on my stories & to finish adding my fanfic details to my website…
Tumblr media
The current enemies I have lined up for Power of Eons. You’ll be able to identify a few & that’s it. Kenitia Swole is a doppelgänger from the Mirror Realms; based off of Kenitia Cole the Choreographer/Dancer who murdered Victoria Monet’s “Good Time x Trouble”. Go listen to it… Iyyesh, Spiral, Occrean & Sharker are new to the fanfic. Dreddonius is the father of Faint, his alive form was defeated by Faint, Diesel & the Dark Chain Gang back when the prophecy was identified again by Faint being discovered by Diesel. Then bringing her to one of the Dragon Strongholds of the Crazoid Realms; where she was born. Long story short, she was locked in the castle with the rest of the survivors but opening the castle, via another prophecized dragon getting close to another; resurrected Dreddonius. Now, he’ll be in the form of Bonie Dreddonius; just for this fanfic.
