It's interesting to fianlly get faces to put to Azul's bullies? They all do seem to be more humanoid merpeople than more sea creature-like ones (though the in-game silhouettes also implied this), which makes me wonder if the "they discriminate against octopus merfolk" theory have some kind of truth to it. A lot of it seems to be that they look down on him for spewing ink when he cries + his inability to swim fast; his limbs get tangled in things.

THOSE KIDS ARE SUCH DICKS THOUGH, AZUL WASN'T DOING ANYTHING TO THEM... Just swimming by with his stuff and that asshole had to tug on one of his tentacles, make Azul's stuff go everywhere, and knock Azul to the seabed... Poor baby's crying (and he inked too, which… uh, seems like the equivalent of wetting yourself in Finding Nemo but not sure if that’s the case here too)💀 KIDS ARE BRUTAL, MAN.

Also??? Confirmation that female merfolk wear seashell bras!! There's a background character that wears one.

OOOOOH Little Mermaid reference! We see a bunch of bottles in the same shapes as Ursula’s ingredients, but one thing that stuck out to me was this bubble with a butterfly in it. Ursula used a similar one to make her Vanessa disguise.

I like that the manga shows us how hard Azul worked to become the person we know today. We knew that he studied a lot and wrote a ton of spells using his limbs and the ink he produces, but we see him engaging in other activities to improve himself too. Like him lifting all those dumbbells!! That’s so impressive for a little kid.

THE TWINNNNNnmNnNNNNNnNs!!!! 😭 They’re so cute!! I think the super short hair (including the shorter black strands, lmao) looks very appealing on their smaller selves. The scales on their foreheads are a nice touch.

LMAO the way the twins just barge into Azul’s place and start digging through things 😭 No sense of privacy, I guess.

Jade and Floyd look very similar to their modern day selves, but you can tell that Azul notably still has some of his “baby fat”. By high school, it’s all gone.

… Anyway, I can see that the shady seafood trio still had their signature sketchy smirks, even all the way back then. This does not bode well 💦

This month's 4koma focuses on Riddle and his fellow Equestrian Club members! Riddle is trying to make a pumpkin carriage for Halloween, while Silver and Sebek provide feedback on how well the carriage suits Malleus's needs. Riddle also goes on to get help from Heartslabyul.

I'll search for fan translations myself but there's too many content and I'm a little lost where to start jsjskd I need a little help to know how many things are of and also, I have another question: where do you all know when there's something coming out, like new manga chapter or a 4-koma one? any updates page I should know of? Manga Chapter Release Information Episode of Savanaclaw/Octavinelle/4koma, Monthly on the 18th

New chapters of the Savanaclaw/Octavinelle manga and 4koma are published in G-Fantasy magazine on the 18th of the month (or the 16th when the 18th is a Sunday) 🥳

The Savanaclaw manga and the Octavinelle manga have recently been publishing in an every-other-month schedule in G-Fantasy, but this is not always consistent.

For example, Octavinelle's newest chapter was released a few days ago and the next update has been announced for the June 18th, while Savanaclaw's newest chapter was released in March and the next update has been announced for July, with the added information that it was meant to release in May but it is taking a month off, so maybe only 4koma in May?

This information is from the most recent chapters in each. On the last page of new chapters they always write when it is that the next chapter will be coming 📅

Some ideas for Twisted Wonderland events

(*Mild spoilers for some JP server events and Chapter 6)

-A Mulan-themed event: In one of the Halloween events, Silver mentioned knowing the story of Mulan, and Lilia has mentioned having been to "the East" before (not to mention Diasomnia's Halloween costumes are longs). It would be lovely to see Lilia return to the TWST-equivalent of China with some of his friends and meeting new characters--bonus points if someone is twisted from Mushu. A story about a girl who makes a sacrifice for her aging father by enlisting in the military on his behalf fits well with Silver and Lilia, so now would be the perfect opportunity to give them duo magic! Also, Chinese xianxia/martial arts fantasy novels are very popular in Japan and abroad nowadays (if you know, you know :) ), and I would love to see the boys wearing hanfu--they'd look so majestic and cool!

-Sam's hometown event: A Princess and the Frog event where the boys go to the TWST version of New Orleans, chaperoned by Sam. It would be a great opportunity to explore the jazz and culinary scene, and, of course, wear 1920s-inspired clothing. Someone in Octavinelle gets an SSR.

-A pajama-party event: Night Raven College hosts an all-night pillow fight tournament, and everyone gets extremely competitive, kind of like Beanfest. Everyone wears pajamas--I'm not sure if they'd have their own outfits, or if the dorms would match and have PJ sets with their logo on it (kind of like the pajamas they sell at the JP Disney Store). In battle, the chibis throw pillows at each other.

-Octavinelle hometown event: We are introduced to the Tweels' parents and/or Azul's mother. Given how Jamil and Kalim's hometown event carried out, it is likely that only one of the three will actually get an event card, but we'll see. In the Halloween event, Riddle mentioned that he's never seen the sea before. Even though he's had a chance in the Lost in the Book with Stitch event (and the developers probably want to give the spotlight to different characters), I'm afraid he doesn't remember it. Anyway, he deserves to go again. Alternatively, there's an event where the boys go to the Sunshine Lands and meet Prince Rielle. In this case, Riddle and Azul must go together--it would be nice to see after the events of Chapter 6.

-Riddle and Trey hometown event/Black Butler crossover: We've already had a Heartslabyul-themed hometown event with Deuce, but this time, we get to meet Trey's family and Riddle's mother. The likelihood that we get a canon Black Butler crossover as well is very close to zero, but it would be really fun to make a few jokes/hints about Riddle having a younger cousin who wears an eyepatch and solves mysteries with his enigmatic butler. Bonus points if Riddle and Jade have duo magic and dress up in Victorian/ouji clothing.

-J-fashion event: Speaking of ouji clothing, it would be amazing if there was an event inspired by Japanese fashions and subcultures. I think there was a part in one of the anthology mangas where Vil gave the Pop Music Club a visual kei makeover. I know the Pop Music Club has their own SSRs already, but I wouldn't mind seeing more outfits in this style.

-An orchestra-themed event: Some of the NRC students form a classical orchestra. Malleus is there, of course--I imagine him playing the cello this time. The Octavinelle trio is there as well with their respective instruments, as is Idia and Riddle both playing violins. I can see Jamil playing a woodwind instrument--maybe a flute, a clarinet, or an oboe?

Heeeeey, content that isn’t a daily visitor post for once although I’m posting this now only because the game is doing maintenance. A bit of digital coloring and shading practice for myself using a page from the anthology~

Do you think Riddle has any experience with musical instruments? In the Octavinelle manga it looks like hes directing the music class, so he at least can read sheet music. In Caters dream hes the dj, does this mean Riddle knows how to use a turntable? And in Riddles dream, hes a singer, so can he really sing?

I don't recall Riddle mentioning that he plays an instrument in canon. (You can find a list of students able to play instruments here!) However, I'd say it's possible that he does. If I had to guess, probably something classical and "cultured" like piano or violin. Riddle at least has an understanding of music theory and a discerning ear if he is able to conduct a group in song. For example, he is shown doing this in his and Azul's joint music class in the Episode of Octavinelle.

Riddle may also be judging the singing of his own dorm members when they gather to sing. According to rule 304, on days when a hedgehog sneezes, all the card soldiers must gather and perform a song. I included images of the scene from the Episode of Heartslabyul for easy visualization.

Imagination enhances one's magic, as visualizing spells helps with casting them. As such, NRC students are required to take art and music. Since Mrs. Rosehearts wishes for her son to be a proficient mage, I think it's possible that she might have tutored him in art and music to some extent. His private schooling prior to NRC may have done so too. (Riddle has also mentioned being familiar with ballroom dancing!) Again, not because those creative fields themselves are valued, but to maximize her son's spellcasting potential.

I don't think Riddle would have been encouraged to explore new instruments or to step outside of playing whatever pieces he is assigned, though. His mom kept a pretty tight control over him, so 💦

Let's remember not to take the dreams too literally. Just because something happens in a dream doesn't mean it reflects reality. I really doubt that Mrs. Rosehearts let Riddle learn how to do something as "uncouth" and freestyle as DJing. This was most likely just something dream!Riddle did for Cater because I guess whatever magic was governing the dream thought this would be the carefree and fun-loving version of his dorm leader he would want. The same goes with Riddle being a singer. Maybe he knows how to sing irl (he has a line in the Episode of Octavinelle about how he has to "keep up" with Azul), as singing is a more "respectable" art than DJing, going by Riddle's mom's logic. But really, I don't think that's translated so literally into Riddle's own dream. I think the type of singing (if he does any) irl is most likely the controlled and classical kinds, whereas in the dream, he's a lot wilder and freer with it. For example, they mention that Riddle was causing a public disturbance with his amplifiers in his dream. He probably doesn't have that irl.

I was thinking about this a bit, since i'm plus size i can relate to Azul, but like wouldn't it be better to be fat underwater?? Like the further down you go the colder it gets (depending on area i suppose). So wouldn't it be better to have a good layer of fat to isolate the heat? Also bc clothes other than modesty would do nothing other than weigh you down. Azul was lowkey the most fit to survival of you think about it.

I believe we learn in book 4 that the area of the Coral Sea where the Octatrio hails from becomes frigid and freezes over in the winter. This is why they choose to stay on-campus rather than head home over the holiday break. So yeah, the waters would be pretty cold!

Merpeople generally do not wear clothes in canon because (like you said) fabric would weigh them down in the water. Jade has a voice line that indicates he's not used to wearing clothes and that it was a learning process for him, so I assume this is true for the other merpeople as well. "Clothes are so uncomfortable. It's been a while since we came on land, but I'm still not accustomed to them." He often has to fight with Floyd to get him to wear a tie too. "Floyd always complains about his bowtie being too tight and immediately yanks it off. I couldn't even count how many times I've tied it for him."

The manga shows us that even merchildren don't wear many clothes, but none of them seem to indicate feeling cold. Jade, too, says that he is fine with the cold in Harveston because he's "used to it" from his home.

The twins tell us that they and Azul come from the same northern region of the Coral Sea, and, similar to the other merchildren depicted in the manga, the twins demonstrate a cold resistance despite not being the same size as Azul. In book 4, they describe their reluctance to go home not in terms of the temperature being unpleasant, but the ice floes that form being a hassle.

This seems to imply that merpeople don't really need the extra body fat to stay warm because they either grow up used to the temperature of the waters or they have adaptations that help insulate them from the cold.

It's still true that having extra fat can help with insulation! That's just how biology works. It was probably nice to have in those winters when Azul still attended school in the Coral Sea. However, I wonder if this benefit isn't as significant as we may think it is, considering that 1) it seems like even the slimmer merchildren aren’t fazed by the cold anyway and 2) Azul's bullies make fun of him for a number of other survival "disadvantages". For example, it would be very easy to spot Azul because his ink is dark and colors the water around him. Additionally, his bulky tentacles and the extra space they take up make him a slow and clumsy swimmer. Maybe it's more of a "sum of the parts" thing and not a single trait when it comes to "making it" in the ocean.

Does Azul just leave his contracts loose in his vault? Or is there any evidence that he keeps them in an organized binder or folder? Cuz Rip to ruggie carrying a bunch of loose papers without being noticed in the underwater Octavinelle.

If chapter 9 of the Episode of Octavinelle manga is anything to go by, Azul does seem to sort the contracts (since there are several stacks inside his vault). However, we don’t know how they’re sorted (is it by last name, year, dormitory, etc.). The panels illustrating the inside of the vault show the contracts are all loose and not separated by tabs, folders, binders, or anything of the sort.

I don’t think handling the contracts underwater is an issue though, regardless of how much or how little Azul organizes those papers. The manga indicates to us that Leona, Ruggie, and Azul are all clearly still indoors when Ruggie has successfully swiped the contracts and handed them to his dorm leader for sanding. They don’t have to fight water physics www

(The game uses the outside underwater background rather than the Octavinelle hallway background for this scene, so that’s probably where your confusion comes from.)

The Mostro Lounge is being swarmed by rowdy, demanding Savanaclaw students at the same time so that’s probably keeping the Octavinelle folks preoccupied. When you’re really focused on one task, you do not pay attention to your surroundings even if a very obvious detail passes you. Ruggie can also be very stealthy if he likes due to his years of pickpocketing expertise—so he’s likely sneaking around with his bounty with the grace of a cat.

Like this part in book 3 when he made us fight his dorm members so we could stay in the dorm makes me look at him like this 😒 like sir I'm magicless and homeless and physically weak and you want me to fight your muscled dorm members + they have magic!😭😭 Why?! At this rate I would have slept in one of the class rooms instead 😞I mean it was Grim do the fighting but still! But that's not the only reason I have other reasons why I hate him 😭 (I'm scared of him lol)

Lemme tell you this right here and right now: I have learned from observation that there are no bigger L*ona haters out there than L*ona stans themselves 💀 We They will say, "Leona Kingscholar is literally the fucking worst character not just in Twisted Wonderland, but in all media that has ever and will ever be conceived. Hate that guy, what a shitty scumbag," one moment and then turn right around and kiss our their lion merch with all the tender love and care a human could possibly lavish an object with.

Early main story Leona is definitely the type to bully the crud out of others 💀 To be fair to him though, honestly any dorm (other than Heartslabyul) would have been reluctant to house a pair that they have little to no personal connection with. The students at NRC are known for their pride and reluctance to help each other out, right? Night Raven College also has a culture of "the strong obey the weak", so to have Yuu and Grim "earn their keep" by demonstrating their strength makes sense. The other dorms would have probably demanded similar things of them, regardless of how downtrodden and dreary their circumstances are. It's not like Azul or the mob students showed Yuu and Grim any mercy before. Most of the student population is not nice or welcoming, especially if there's nothing in it for them to gain. In this case, Leona would be gaining two temporary students that aren't deadweights to him. Of course, that doesn't justify what he did/said in book 3 or any of the other things he did/said. It doesn't mean you have to like the guy for what he did. It's just that I don't know if that one scene is a specific-to-Leona asshole move. I do want to point to the Episode of Octavinelle manga too; in that, Leona doesn't make Yuuta fight mobs to sleep over, he accepts Yuuta's cooking abilities as a substitute. This loops right back around to what I was saying about "earning your keep" and how most NRC students won't want to help you out unless you have something to offer them in return. For Yuuta, that was his culinary skills. For in-game Yuu and Grim, it had to be combat prowess. Is it cruel in comparison to letting them sleep over in return for nothing? Yes, absolutely. But is it in character for them to be selfish about it? Also yes, absolutely. I think it's fine to have as a characterization moment--though whether you enjoy this or not is up to the individual fan.

I get that he's not going to appeal to everyone. Leona definitely comes off as intimidating and he has plenty of other traits to loathe. Every character will have people that dislike them or even outright hate them. That's completely normal and should be expected, since everyone has different experiences, tastes, and perspectives to bring to the table--each equally as valid as the last. Feelings can change over time, feelings can stay the same. Whatever happens, it's fine! No one decent is going to hold a (water) gun to your head and force you to like L*ona. Enjoy fandom in your own way!

That being said 💦💦 I will advise that you avoid sending messages of, "I actually HATE this character that you happen to like" into people's inboxes. It's okay to have a different opinion than the fan you're expressing the opinion to, but you should keep in mind that it's not always appropriate to voice it or to press the matter. I might be generally indifferent about discussing why we like or dislike certain characters, but others might not be so happy to get a message that could be considered bashing on their favorite(s). Again, just be mindful of others and their boundaries!

I think that's debatable since Yuu's traits are mostly left vague and left up to player interpretation. They're not really marketed to us as a physically strong character but more as a tactician and strategist, as is shown in the prologue (which is the only real detailed instance where we see Yuu getting "involved" in a battle).

I looked back at the part you mentioned, which is 3-13. This is shortly after being booted out of Ramshackle, which is being held as collateral until the deal is fulfilled. We go to Savanaclaw for temporary housing, to which Leona says, "Fight my dorm's students. If you win, I'll let you stick around as gophers." A battle ensues, and it concludes with Leona scolding his mobs: "How could you lose to some puny little herbivores that fast? You're givin' me a bad name over here."

It's our victory--however, I want to point out that nothing Leona says here indicates that Yuu fought or used their fists in the fight, only that "puny little herbivores" won. It could very well be a case similar to the prologue, where Grim did the majority of the fighting against the ghosts while Yuu commanded from the back. This also fits more in line with the game's attempt to present Yuu as having an alternate kind of strength: they make up for a lack of magic with their tactical skill and by encouraging team coordination. Based on this, I personally believe that Yuu isn't meant to be stronger than Ace. But hey, maybe Ace can still consider himself stronger than Grim 💀

I'd like to add that the Episode of Octavinelle's interpretation of this same scene involves a non-violent solution. Instead of beating up Savanaclaw mobs, Yuuta demonstrates his cooking ability and is able to convince Leona to let him stay with that alone.

Of course, there are obvious exceptions to this. There are many Yuusonas or OCs in the fandom that are physically strong. Some Yuus that feature in official Twst media, such as Yuuken Enma and Yuuka Hirasaka from the Episodes of Heartslabyul and Savanaclaw, respectively, are also both accomplished athletes. It could also be argued that game!Yuu is strong in other ways, such as seeing the value of teamwork or supporting very strong stamina (they survived a gold disc beaning them in the head; no concussion) and mental fortitude (I mean, after dealing with so many OBs they're somehow still stable). So really, whether Yuu is stronger or weaker than Ace it depends on how you see Yuu.

I know you’ve been receiving a lot of Malleus asks lately, but do you think Malleus’s overblot will really play with the idea of overblots being dangerous to the overblotter’s health? Having him suffer from health complications after his massive magic expenditure would help take him down a notch in preparation for whatever follows in Book 8. We can’t have him solving everything with his ridiculous magical might after all.

I don't really think they'll "really play with the idea of OBs being dangerous to the OBer's health" beyond making Malleus conveniently incapacitated for a short enough of a time to not defeat Grim in a single flick of his pinkie finger. (I also want to point out we don't have confirmation for a book 8 with OB Grim quite yet, so I'd rather not make assumptions on what's to come.)

The reason why I think this is because none of the other boys seem to have suffered the physical consequences following their own incidents. Not a single one as far as I'm aware, at least not in a significant way. It's also odd when you consider that both Riddle and Vil's books highlight that they are seemingly back to full health again "a few days later", implying that it only takes a few days to totally recover from the exertion and anguish that they were just under. The worst of it was Vil mentioning his group did not perform as well as they could have since they were all exhausted.

More damning, however, is Leona's circumstances. He actually recovers almost immediately after the defeat of his OB form (barring a trip to the school infirmary; this is more explicitly shown in the Episode of Octavinelle manga) and even has enough magic to spare to rejoin the interdorm tournament that's going on that same day. And, mind you, they are playing a sport which requires the use of magic… meaning Leona still pushes himself and uses magic when he just overblotted a few minutes ago??? Trey and Jamil even talk about how since the Savanaclaw students took such a beating, it'll be easier for the rest of them to have their revenge on them for playing dirty before the tournament's start. Is… Is no one concerned Leona might OB again from playing?? No?? Just me?? Okay…

Now of course Malleus is on a completely different power level than his peers. We can’t be sure how his body would react post-OB compared to everyone else, same as how Idia notes in book 6 that the memory wiping technology STYX has on hand may affect fae differently. Solely basing my thoughts on what we already know of other characters though, the mage’s health is not treated like a huge concern in the aftermath. We don’t observe devastating side effects either.

I think we can assume they’ll be fine granted enough rest and food, with maybe the one notable exception being physical hindrance/tiredness in the period right after. That’ll probably be long enough for Malleus to not Save The Day Instantly whenever it is that Grim loses it and rampages, thus giving the other boys a chance to team up and help out. Again, really plot convenient (*stares at the feats Leona was able to pull off in his “tired” state*) but whatever makes the story move forward, I guess 🤷‍♀️

Did they ever tackle how the other dorm leaders reacted to the whole anemone issue during the Octavinelle arc? Like i know Riddle wasn't happy when he found out that ADeuce got into a contract with Azul and have to serve him since they failed to complete their deal but I dont think we got Leona's reaction to what happened to his dormmates since Im pretty sure I saw Savanaclaw npcs among the anemones. Like were they unaware or did they decide "let them face the consequences"?

Nope, we pretty much only have Riddle and Leona’s perspectives on the anemone incident of book 3. I’m pretty sure the other dorm leaders were not ignorant about what had happened; Azul had 225 students out of a school of 800ish under his thumb, which would significantly impact the school’s ecosystem and would be hard to ignore. Besides, what dorm leader would ignore anemones suddenly sprouting on their students’ heads and NOT get to the bottom of things?

It’s not too hard to imagine that the other dorm leaders were none too pleased to find out the news but also didn’t intervene for whatever reason (be it “they deserve to face these consequences”, knowing that they can’t do anything about it, etc.). In all likelihood, it was probably done out of convenience for the writers and/or to keep the story centered on the initial characters. At this point in the main story, we haven’t met characters relevant to other dorms (like Epel in Pomefiore), so we’d really feel little attachment seeing generic mob students suffering as Vil chides them or whatever. We can still get emotionally invested because our personal friends, Adeuce and Grim, are in dire straits.

Of course, Riddle was NOT happy with the circumstances (how dumb do you have to be to make a contract with Azul?). According to Deuce in 3-7, he was scolded and made to write a paper to reflect.

Leona’s opinion, meanwhile, is moreso implied. In 3-16, he says that anyone that would willingly and repeatedly make contracts with Azul are stupid. Leona has also made deals with Azul, but it always came at a steep cost to himself so he tries to do so sparingly. However, Leona also continuously characterizes those who get suckered as “dumb” and “dim-witted”, implying he does not think highly of those who fall for Azul’s schemes. This leads me to think that Leona’s feelings err on “you made your bed, now go lie in it”.

But!! I think it’s possible that Leona’s motivation to dust Azul’s contracts threefold: eliminate his own contract with Azul, help Yuu and co. out (because they’re annoying him, lol), AND to free his (idiot) dorm members from Azul’s clutches. We’ve seen Leona act very similarly “selfless” (while operating to achieve his own goals) in book 2, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he continued this plotting in other books.

One thing I noticed while reviewing book 3; there are only anemone’d students from FOUR of the dorms: Heartslabyul, Savanaclaw, Scarabia, and Pomefiore. Octavinelle, Ignihyde, and Diasomnia students were not reaped.

Now, it’s possible that this occurred due to limited game assets, as a similar issue occurred with the game showing beastmen mobs only in Savanclaw and in no other dorm. However, the manga debunked this quickly by showing beastmen in Heartslabyul and humans in Savanavlaw. I therefore decided to consult the manga to see if I could find Octavinelle, Ignihyde, or Diasomnia mobs among Azul’s anemones.

The Episode of Octavinelle manga depicts many mob students also indebted to Azul. It wasn’t that helpful since the pages are in black and white, making it difficult to know which dorms they belong to. However, we do see that Ignihyde students were anemone'd:

Maybe the Diasomnia kids were too strong-willed to fall for his schemes? Or perhaps they really are among the count of anemones, but just not shown clearly in the game/manga. (I can’t see Azul passing up the opportunity to get more clients indebted to him, regardless of dorm affiliation, since getting enough students of one dorm under him could grant him leverage with the dorm leader to get them back www)

About the order of the dormitories.

Is it confirmed that Heartslabyul is the first because it's inspired by Alice in Wonderland? (I always thought it was that, but now I'm in doubt).

And about book 2 initially being book 6. This creates a pattern in which 2nd graders are the first to overblot and then 3rd graders.

(I don't know if my age calculations are correct).

And, following this logic, it would also be from the youngest boy to the oldest: Riddle (birthday in August, and if the school year starts in September, he turned 16 (minimum age) just before going to the NRC), Azul, (birthday in February), Jamil (born 12 days after the start of the school year in September, so he had to wait a bit longer to go, (I think I saw somewhere that this is canonical?)) Vil, (birthday in April, before September, so probably didn't have to wait an extra year to turn 16) Idia, (birthday in December, after September, so probably should have waited longer to turn 16). So we have Leono aged 20 and Malleus aged 178.

And with the current dorm order, the Disney villains vary: Female (QoH), male (Scar), female (Ursula), male (Jafar), female (Evil Queen), male (Hades), female (Maleficent).

Again, I couldn’t find any confirmation as to why the dorm order is the way it is; that is inclusive of Heartslabyul. I think you may just be assuming Heartslabyul is first because it’s the one inspired by Alice in Wonderland (for which the franchise is named, hence Twisted Wonderland). (Personally, I would think that a franchise named that would feature the Alice in Wonderland dorm as the final one, not the first.)

Your calculations are correct; if we assume the dorm trailer reveal order is the original “intended” order, then the story would progress in order of youngest second year to oldest second year (Riddle, Azul, Jamil), then youngest third year to oldest third year (Vil, Idia, Leona, Malleus). While there isn’t strong evidence that this is deliberate, I think it’s interesting to consider the pattern of gradually aging through the lens of book 7, whose conflict kicks off because Malleus is so afraid of change and losing his loved ones to time. When the main story itself is subtly posed to indicate a student slowly aging up into adulthood and leaving their peaceful school days behind… Yeah, it’s melancholic in a way 😞

With the current order, we do in fact see an alternating pattern of female-male Great Seven members. It’s unclear whether this pattern was intentional or not, as TWST doesn’t really have a strong gender-based theme to its overall narrative.

What I do think is slightly more believable is that the manga!Yuus may have intentionally been designed as the opposite gender of the G7 member whose book they feature in. Male Yuuken is the Yuu for Heartslabyul (Queen of Hearts), female Yuuka is the Yuu for Savanaclaw (King of Beasts), and male Yuuta is the Yuu for Octavinelle (Sea Witch). We’re going to have to see if this pattern keeps up for future Yuus, as it’s possible that they mix things up (for example, maybe we’ll get a nonbinary Yuu!). Right now, I think an argument could be made that they “flipped” the genders for the manga!Yuus to “mirror” their respective G7 member. (TWST has a LOT of mirror imagery.)
