Some messy Tarantula Crew headcanons/thoughts I posted on Discord but will also post here:
THADE --doesn't have a natural sense of what colors go well together and which ones clash, and also just really loves all colors, so he used to dress really gaudily, until people bullied him about it. now he just wears black and white. --always looks 2 minutes away from dying. this is just how he looks normally.
LILLIAN --i don't really have anything interesting to say about her lmao. like i love her, i love feral women, i like to draw her and put her in situations, but i don't really have any headcanons off the top of my head RED MARY --the crew calls her red --smokes and has a gravelly smoker's voice (which was also probably caused by the smoke of all the fires she sets) --her personality is a pain to develop, let me tell you. i keep feeling like she's too similar to my version of skin-taker (not being outright hateful and just killing bc she enjoys it and doesn't see it as wrong) BOAR --this was inspired by how the wiki used to say that the hogs crew's captain (who is possibly supposed to be the same guy as boar) was twice as tall as the other puppets. i headcanon him to be between 6'10" and 7' tall. maybe taller... --a very wholesome guy. but don't mistake his kindness for weakness, and don't mistake his optimism for stupidity --was a proper sailor before joining the crew. possibly a merchant sailor or a whaler. he's the most knowledgeable about nautical stuff. SCHOT --he got caught by the navy at some point in his past. the scars on his face are from the earl of wax's clawed torture glove. (my interp of him has 5 scars across the whole width of his face and not just his eyes) --he was a high-ranking member of the red-handed jacks (green gregory's crew, and also the most feared pirate crew of the time), which is why earl came after him so hard. earl was also the one to target and kill his wife. --he's blind in one eye (from earl torturing him), so when he shoots, he doesn't have to close one eye, so it seems as though he's just staring into the soul of whoever he's shooting DR. MORT --he doesn't have eyelids so he just constantly stares at people. --he's immune to sleep deprivation because he used to have a very demanding career as both a head surgeon at candle cove's hospital and a main contributor in cc's medical academia. like he can sleep for 3 hours and feel well-rested. --unsophisticated frenchman representation. he owns like 3 outfits total, smells musty 24/7, and is banned from the kitchen because one time he thought lemons and oranges were interchangeable in recipes CONEA --i have nothing really interesting to say about him tbh. i wish i was less bored by him, but he's just kinda... there. --he has long luxurious hair and it makes him look like a male model. TALAPIO --i mentioned this before, but i hc her to have been just a normal (but weirdly big) spider before she got light magic. her previous owner was a light magician who gave her their powers on their deathbed. --she's another one of those characters who i definitely think has potential but i'm weirdly not that invested in. i should think about her more. it's pretty interesting, to think what it would have been like to go from having a bug's intelligence to being smarter than any human... BONUS! THE UNNAMED COOK --her name is gwen and she's a no-bullshit old welsh lady --that's it. i only think about her like, once a year.

Some world building for my fic!! 👀☠️
Tumblr media
This map is a photo of the primary domain/ the realm of Slenderman. The dark forest is his kingdom, and within this realm, there are sub-realms, where some of his residents reside.
The Manor🏰⚰️💀 (center): The Slenderman's Manor. His heart. His castle. Where he resides and can see beyond this realm into the human realm, and the lower realms of the underworld. This is where he brings new residents after corrupting their minds, making them into the monsters they are infamously known as.
When a resident has overcome some "trials" he disposes onto them, they earn a sub-realm. A place away from the manor they can claim as their own territory. It molds and changes to their energies.
-Current residents of the manor: The proxies, Ben Drowned, Lost Silver, Lavender Town, Jason the toy maker, the doll maker, lazari, Lulu, Dr. Smiley, Nina, Candypop, and many others, including Slenderman himself.
The Cabin🏚🔪🩸 (top left) : The Cabin of Jeffery and Liu Woods. A dark, almost run-down Shack that the two brothers call home. It was formed after Jeffrey had completed his trials, and he immediately brought his brother along, in an attempt to repair their relationship. And, to keep him safe from Slenderman's abuse.
The Cabin residents- Jeff The Killer, Homicidal Liu, Smile Dog, and Razor (A horned desert lizard rescued from an abusive owner)
The Circus 🤡🎭🎪 (bottom center): a monochrome circus complete with dead corpses walking about and attending the stalls. Many rides that risk falling apart, and cackling laughter heard all about. This Sub-realm was formed when Laughing Jack and his sister, Laughing Jill, completed their trials together. They've made this run-down clearing into their personal playground.
Residents of the Circus- Laughing Jack, Laughing Jill, Chuper (Jack's pet Chupacabra), and William Grossman
The Asylum 🏨💉🩺(bottom right):
The second-largest Sub realm within Slenderman's territory. It has expanded due to the amount of Resident's its creator invited to live in. Eyeless Jack was dragged through every level of this asylum, yet he completed his trials and made it a safe haven, and a hospital, for those who no longer wanted to live with Slenderman directly.
Residents of the Asylum- Eyeless Jack, Jane, Zero, Clockwork, Sally, the Puppeteer, Nurse Ann
The forest🌲👻 🌳(scattered patches):
Either unclaimed territory of the realm, or pieces waiting to be formed by other subjects. Many of the creatures and monsters roam around the dense trees and foliage, hunting and mindless in their hunt for food. Anyone who gets lost within these forests it doomed to die.
Residents of the forest- The Rake, Long horse, some cryptids, The Candle Cove cast, and some undiscovered.

The Jolly Hounds!
MILO
Name: Milo Davies
Age: 26
Position: Captain
Bio: Milo is Poppy's younger brother and was part of the Laughingstock Crew in its early days. He left to form his own crew when he was a teenager, feeling stifled by Poppy.
Milo is vain and reckless, and he relies on his crewmates more than he'd like to admit. He acts tyrannical, but the crew doesn't take him seriously enough to feel threatened by it.
BLACK CHIN
Name: Evelyn "Black Chin" Black
Age: 30
Position: First mate
Bio: Milo, Black Chin, and Henric used to be buddies. They'd meet up at the pub and talk and fantasize together about forming their own crew. When Milo left the Laughingstock Crew, the three of them formed the Jolly Hounds Crew. (Henric eventually left for reasons I won't get into here.)
Black Chin is the only crew member Milo truly respects. He's more mature and levelheaded (and sober) than Milo and often acts as his voice of reason. He knows that he'd be a better captain than Milo is, but he's content with being first mate.
He HATES his first name. It reminds him of his posh upbringing. Mentioning it would get you a dirty look or a knock from his sword hilt.
KIMOTHY
Name: Kimothy Smith
Age: 33
Position: Gunner and striker
Bio: When he was a small child, Kimothy's parents shipwrecked off the Previously-Abandoned-Now-Inhabited Island and drowned. Kimothy survived and was raised by the PANI Islanders, who taught him his battle skills. The Jolly Hounds visited the PANI Island once, and Kimothy chose to join them, wanting to explore the world.
Kimothy is a jack-of-all-trades with weapons and carries three or four at a time. He's a violent but honorable fighter.
He speaks with a severe mumble and most people can't understand him unless he speaks in short sentences. Roger can understand him just fine, however, and usually acts as his interpreter.
ROGER
Name: Roger Rogerson III
Age: 43
Position: Scout
Bio: Roger once attempted to start a career as a detective. Unfortunately for him, there isn't much demand for detectives in Candle Cove. He resorted to joining the crew because he couldn't make a living and they needed somebody who was actually smart a scout.
He is a skilled (if tragically unappreciated) investigator and uses his skills to do things like find hidden treasure and obtain information from enemy crews.
He has a scope in his left eye socket. It has several moveable lenses (like those things optometrists use) and can function as a magnifying glass or telescope or microscope as need be. He designed and built it himself and had it surgically implanted by Dr. Mort.
STARSON
Name: Starson von Gnock
Age: 22
Position: Navigator
Bio: Starson was born into an aristocratic family that micromanaged his life, controlling everything he did in order to maintain their power in high society and keep up appearances. Knowing how rich his family is, the Jolly Hounds once kidnapped him and held him for ransom. It turned out that he was thrilled to finally be free from his parents, and to have some excitement in his life, and he chose to join the crew instead of return home.
He has a talent for navigation and map-making. He considers his time with the crew as temporary, eventually wanting to begin a career as a cartographer using the knowledge of Candle Cove's topography he's gained while sailing with the crew. He's just waiting for the tension with his family to die down.
BUBBA
Name: Barrabas "Bubba" True
Age: 41
Position: Cook and janitor
Bio: A bored sailor, Bubba accidentally stumbled onto the Jolly Hounds' ship one day, said, "Eh, why not?" and joined them. The crew was happy with this because nobody else knew how to cook or clean.
Bubba is a goofy and easygoing guy. He often seems drunk, but he doesn't drink; that's just how he is.
SARIAH
Name: Sariah Fanshawe
Age: 24
Position: Cabin girl
Bio: Sariah is an upper-class woman who's always been fascinated by the adventurous life of pirates. This is one of the reasons she was attracted to and started dating Milo. One day, she had a falling out with her family, and ran away to live on the ship with Milo and the crew.
Sariah was quite naive when she first joined, and the other crew members thought that she didn't have to guts to be a pirate. This wasn't helped by the fact that Milo coddles her. However, she's learning the ropes.
DANNY
Name: Danny
Age: 4
Position: Ship pet
Bio: The crew found Danny's egg abandoned one day while looking for treasure and decided to care for it until it hatched. Milo disagreed with this, but he was outvoted by everyone else. He eventually warmed up to him and considers him to be his pet.
Danny is a wyvern (he has 2 wings and 2 legs) and only about as big as a macaw. He can't breathe fire, much to Milo's dismay.

The Happy, The Gay, and the Terrifying (A Cartoon Universe Crossover AU)
List of Universes Involved:
The Owl House
Amphibia
Gravity Falls
Transformers: Prime
Steven Universe
Phineas and Ferb
Undertale
FNaF
BatIM/DR
_______________________________________________________
The Happy, The Gay, and The Terrifying is a universe that combines the universes shown above into a single and (hopefully) cohesive universe. Storywise, this is an epilogue that would explore all of these universe meeting somehow, with various interactions and REactions to specific news and revelations. (ALSO this is a mainly POSITIVE AU, so Vanessa aint Vanny no more.)
So the Monsters are now on the Surface, the Human/Demon Realm exchange program is well underway, Steven Universe has been traveling, Dipper and Mabel Pines are exploring, Phineas and Ferb are at their respective colleges, Gregory has been adopted by Vanessa with Glamrock Freddy as some sort of companion, Jack is also at college alongside Miko and Raf, and Audrey is out in the open, still young and fresh. And well the Amphibia girls are all doing their respective interests.
So with the setting set (kinda), what kinda facts are needed to be known?
_______________________________________________________
Phineas, Jack, Miko, and Raf all go to the same college, where Audrey teaches as an art professor.
By this time, Gregory is in his teens and in high school, near the college. He has taken an interest in engineering and mechanics.
The Monsters are known to exist, but face scrutiny, similar to the Witches. But the college and high school are open facilities, so the witches and monsters who live nearby can go and learn relatively normally.
Ann actually takes a side gig as a biology professor at the college.
Steven travels the country and has taken up temporary residency in the area of the college.
The college is named New Cipher Academy. No, there is no Bill Cypher in this universe… but someone may be trying to do something about that.
Frisk is living with Toriel and Asgore, who get back together… even though that was a rocky road.
Sasha works as the school counselor at the high school.
The Ink Realm is still active, but due to the magic seeping from the Demon Realm and the nearby unleashed magic from the Underground has caused the loop to cease to exist.
The main threats of this universe are as follows: The Coven Cove (Witches from the Demon Realm that want to restore the Coven patriarchy), The Cipher Cult (Worshipers of Bill Cipher wanting to revive their “god”), Rouge Decepticons (Decepticons that didn’t follow the treaty (such as Steeljaw and Thunderhoof)), And finally Burntrap and the Glitchtrap Virus (Stuck in the ruins of the Pizzaplex).
Bendy has become a bit more adult-like, taking on a more grown up form. They work with Audrey grading papers and helping manage the Ink Realm. Oh, and they can speak fluid English AND Spanish!
Luz and Frisk DO meet up, since Frisk decides to join in on the Human/Demon Realm Exchange Program.
Sans works as a science teacher at the high school and runs the Science Fiction Club.
The Autobots still work on Earth, though there are only a few: Ratchet, Knockout, Bumblebee, and Strongarm.
The Crystal Gems stick to the island, but Garnet and Pearl commonly visit Steven and sometimes join in on the travels.
Frisk, Audrey, Luz, Steven, and Dipper all are more connected to the magic of their world.
Stanley and Stanford Pines both had set up shop in the town near the college, Stanley basically being Stanely while Stanford researches the magic upcharge he has discovered.
Also, Unicron ISN’T Earth, at least, not anymore.
There’ll probably be more but I just wanted to get some notes up before I began writing some stories or something.

do you think jack was hurt when the crew chose to stay with stede and no one wanted to come with him, the most fun guy?
Probably not. I actually saw a take from an Izzy Stan once that I low key agreed with but I didn't reblog it because obviously, but it is relevant here so I'll repeat it.
Jack and Ed have a similar response or a crowd turning against them, probably because they came up in piracy similarly, but they have that response for vastly different reasons, and in different ways.
When a crowd turns against Ed he takes it personally and tries to kill everybody. When a crowd turns against Jack he doesn't take it personally and tries to kill everybody. I hope this makes sense (using episodes 5, 8, and 10 as evidence) somewhere along the line they both learned that the correct reaction to a crowd turning against you is to try to get rid of as many of them as you can, which makes sense, if you're a pirate captain and a crew turns against you it's mutiny o'clock. And Ed and Jack are the two pirate captains ever so...
Now I could see an argument for the Jack doesn't take it personally assertion because he does in fact say the line "well when tie an anchor around your leg and toss you overboard it feels pretty personal." And Ed has the line "I know he comes on a bit strong at first but he's insecure". I tend to think he could be insecure without taking that specific scene with Karl personally given that it's repeatedly established that the crew aren't very serious pirates, which I think Jack gives wayyyyy less of a fuck about than Izzy so long as they're drinking with him, but could still probably use to mend a bruised ego. so whether he takes things like this personal hinges on the tossing you overboard line, which he may or may not have been lying about. We have no solid evidence either way. So I tend to waffle based on what's funniest. I've been on a he's lying kick recently because he's my garbage little dirtbag meowmeow. But sometimes I think about him surviving three separate mutinies and having to agree to this plan because he's broke now and I think about the fact that he showed up in a dinghy and I'm like... Meow meow is also having a midlife crisis and he can't die and that is very funny to me. So that statement about him not taking it personally might not be true and as much as I think the line about pirates not needing friends was pure gass to try to hurt Ed for leaving, which he absolutely would have cried about later if the cannonball hadn't immediately given him much bigger problems, he is pretty fucking blaze about the whole thing the next day. And he was planning on leaving with just Ed.
Now what I want you to consider is imagine he has been mutinied three times. I didn't think about this til right now but I want us to think more about why he does say "whose with me in" this scene. If enough of those fuckers agree to leave with him, Stede is no longer the fucker with the boat, Jack can leave Stede and Buttons on the beach of blind man's cove for the British to find the next day, take his crew, and fuck off to go be Bonnie and Clyde core evil boyfriends with Ed again. That was never ever ever gonna happen but I feel like Jack doesn't quite know how astronomically long of a shot that is. I haven't thought about why he would faument mutiny against Stede other than "he's a douchebag and trying to take a shot as he leaves" until now but there is a reason. Like any more opportunist less tightly knit pirate crew would be like "sorry about your bird Buttons but Blackbeard and Calico Jack know what they're doing we can make more money if we go with them"
Jack doesn't know how deep these emotional ties run is what I'm saying. He doesn't know they're fambly. He doesn't know that Ed is madly in love with the guy who he's been hanging out with for *checks notes* these past few weeks/one moon cycle. How would he know that? He showed up yesterday and spent all of it drunk.
I think too much about this man.
Anyway TL;DR: nah he seems way to chill about it the next day and I think his intention was always to leave with Just Ed he just wanted to see if he could get more bang for his buck and when he couldn't ... Well... "Later losers."

Avatar: The Way of Water
Tumblr media
Avatar: The Way of Water is the sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar, finally out after 13 years in development. It follows Jake Sully (Sam Wortington), now fully integrated in Na’vi society, living at the rebuilt Hometree with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and raising a family. When humans return with a massive army as well as plans to terraform Pandora and make it humanity’s new home, Jack is forced to face everything he thought he left behind, and make some tough decisions about how best to protect his family.
I was never a huge fan of the original Avatar; I found the story predictable and unoriginal, most of the characters boring and underdeveloped, and the only real draw for me was the world of Pandora. Even 13 years ago, as derivative as the Na’vi were of an amalgamation of various Native American tribes, I genuinely enjoyed the world and hoped that if there ever were sequels they would build it up even more and explore the other clans.
In preparation for this sequel, I rewatched the first film, and I’m sad to report that I was in fact wrong about several things. For one, not all the characters are flat; Jake, Commander Quaritch (Steven Lang) and Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) are actually developed characters with their own goals, motivations, and personalities. Jake especially, gets a lot of internal struggle, and his journey from a jarhead whose only motivation is to get paid and get his spine fixed, to someone who deeply connects with the forest and with the Na’vi way of life is very well done, even if Wortington’s acting leaves a lot to be desired.
My main gripe with the first film really is the plot; the white savior narrative is the main driving force of the film, and there is something so intrinsically insulting about Jake being a random alien nobody who is not only someone who wants to help the Na’vi, but who is blessed by their goddess Eywa herself to be Pandora’s savior, not to mention how easily he beats the humans and unites the many clans. Just simply becoming Toruk Makto and uniting the clans could’ve been a full film, and yet Avatar squanders it in less than 20 minutes of screentime.
The Way of Water suffers from many of these same problems, while introducing a whole host of new ones. Before I get into my long list of complaints, let me say some positives first.
Visually, the film is gorgeous. CGI has come a long way since 2009, and the attention to detail is staggering. I love everything about the Na’vi designs, from their bioluminescent skin to the way they move and their animal-like mannerisms. The new clan introduced in this film, the Metkayina look amazing, especially the way their bodies and arms are adapted to water. Likewise the designs of the tulkuns are beautiful, as these truly massive, deeply intelligent creatures.
Generally, all the designs from the animals in the water, to the locations new and old, like the Cove of Ancestors, or the Hallelujah mountains are beautiful. The CGI combined with the film being shot and cut with 3d in mind makes the experience of watching it in the cinema worth it, even if it ends up being more of  spectacle rather than a compelling story.
While I didn’t love how Quaritch was brought back, his design was very well done. I loved how his squad still clung onto the human way of dressing, walking and hunting even in their new Na’vi bodies. There was also generally a better integration of the characters who were meant to be humans in Na’vi bodies into said Na’vi bodies; in the first film both Jake and Grace looked very close to the uncanny valley, especially their faces. This film avoids that; Jake and Quaritch look a lot better. Kiri is the only character who sometimes looks awkward which is ironic because her face is the one on all the posters.
Now let’s get into some gripes.
The first one is the plot. There isn’t one. This film is 3 hours and 15 minutes of vibes. Stuff happens, but one cannot call it a plot, since there’s no real progression of events or even a heightening of tension. To explain this I will have to go into SPOILERS, so if for some reason you don’t want this film spoiled, skip this section.
The film starts with Quaritch and his squad waking up in Na’vi bodies. In the last film, supposedly, they gave their DNA and memories to scientists on Earth who have somehow fused them (?) with Na’vi DNA and now they are all Na’vi. The new squad remembers everything the OG people remembered up until the point where they handed off their DN, but they are not actually those people.
Here we run into problem nb. 1: why would Quaritch, a man who was so racist and hostile to the Na’vi, so determined to exterminate them from Hometree by any means necessary, so dedicated to the survival of the humans, agree to give his DNA to this type of project? And if this new Quaritch has enough of the OG’s memories and personality, so much so that he cares about Spider enough to risk his life to save him twice (we’ll talk about Spider later) why isn’t he more conflicted about this?
General Ardmore (Edie Falco) tells the Na’vi squad that their mission is to find and kill Jake Sully because apparently he’s what’s stopping them from relocating the Na’vi and terraforming Pandora. I don’t understand how Jake’s guerilla strikes are doing any damage to the insane amount of military power these humans have, especially because in the first film, the humans on Pandora had been there for years, and had one base. Here, they have a massive compound and have made rail tracks into the forest and spread all the way into the ocean. How would Jake, even with his successful attacks stop them?
Quaritch is the luckiest man in this movie, because Jake’s kids chose this very moment to explore so both groups end up at the compound where Jake and Neytiri killed OG Quaritch. Jake has 3 kids with Neytiri: Neteyam, Lo’ak and Tuk, and he has also adopted Kiri who is Grace’s daughter, born out of her avatar body after Grace died. Jake also semi-adopted Spider, who is in fact Quaritch’s son. Spider was born before Quaritch died, but because he was a child, he got stranded on Pandora since he couldn’t be put in a cryopod.
The two groups fight and eventually Quaritch captures Spider. Afraid that Spider would betray their location (and not even once considering rescuing him from his deadly enemy) Jake decides to quite literary ABANDON the Na’vi and even worse, force Neytiri, their literal Tsahik and LEADER to abandon them as well, under the excuse that Quaritch would come for them and put the clan in danger.
I have NO idea why suddenly now Jake is afraid of Quaritch; he doesn’t know about the terraforming plan and he killed Quaritch once before, and that was before he was even fully Na’vi. What’s so different about Quaritch now that makes him more of a threat? He doesn’t have an army, he has a squad of 10 people!
So at this point, one might assume that Jake’s kids would maybe rebel and go after Spider? Nope, Spider is entirely forgotten about; Kiri mentions him once.
Ok, maybe Jake realizes that he can’t run from the war and must convince the new clan he’s hidden himself among into helping him win the war? Wrong. Jake actually is the one who convices the Metkayina not to fight, which leads to Quaritch capturing the leaders’ children.
So what is the plot? Well, there isn’t one. After Jake and co arrive at the Metkayina village, he and Neytiri drop out of the film and we follow the kids learning to swim, breathe, ride, speak and hunt underwater, for 2 hours.
In those 2 hours we are introduced to a dozen subplots which either lead nowhere or grind the film to a halt. I am not kidding when I say that most of this film felt like a Fallout 4 playthrough; sure I am in a rush to find and save my kidnapped child, but why don’t I spend several hours doing side-quests in Boston harbor or customize my settlement?
What doesn’t help is that none of the new characters are interesting, entertaining or at all developed. The two new adults we have are Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and Ronal (Kate Winslet), the leaders of the Metikayina clan. They have a collective 15 minutes of screentime as stock characters: Ronal is feisty and doesn’t trust outsiders and Tonowari is strict, wise and good at fighting. That’s about it.
For the kids we get Tsireya, Aonung and Rotxo. Tsireya is the beautiful princess who falls in love with one of the outsiders, in this case Lo’ak, and the one who is kindest and most easily charmed by the newcomers. She is actually the best character out of the 3, because the 2 boys are interchangeable; they are both assholes, and are both mean to the Sully kids, especially Aonung who takes it to a whole new level by literally trying to murder Lo’ak and leaving him stranded in a bay full of dangerous, carnivorous fish.
Jake’s kids fare no better: Tuk is an annoying cold who only serves to tag along and needs constant rescuing; she could be replaced by a lamp and nothing would change. Neteyam is the older brother who is Jake’ favorite and supposedly perfect. He has no personality and serves to take the fall for every stupid thing Lo’ak does, and dies. I would call him the Boromir of the group, but that would be a huge insult to Boromoir. Lo’ak for his part is extremely stupid, annoying and whiny. He has a strained relationship with Jake which could be half-interesting if the film ever actually committed to exploring it.
As it stands, Jake comes off as a wildly incompetent and abusive father, but Lo’ak consistently makes every wrong decision ever, in order to justify Jake’s abuse.
The only remotely interesting characters are weirdly, Kiri and Spider. Kiri is interesting because no one knows who her father is or how she was born; she also seems to have a very strong connection to Eywa; she can hear her, she can control nature, she can breathe underwater longer than anyone else, and sometimes goes in a trance that seems to be caused by Eywa. At one point, while bonding with Metkayina's version of the Tree of Souls, she manages to speak to Grace, but before we get any answers, she suffers some kind of stroke. The film seems to suggest she has epilepsy (?) but it never follows up on it, adding it to the list of dropped plot points.
Spider is similarly interesting because he’s a human raised by the Na’vi. He ends up developing a relationship with Quaritch, seeing him as a second chance to have a father. Quaritch for his part also cares for Spider and takes his advice, and later his please seriously. The issue with Spider is that the film tries to have him teach Quaritch’s group how to become Na’vi, and suggests that he’s bonded with them, and might actually betray the Sullys. However, Spider never once falters in his beliefs; even at the very end when Neytiri quite literary threatens to kill him, and actually hurts him, his sole priority is saving Kiri, so at no point did I or anyone believe he would turn to Quaritch, especially because what Quaritch is doing is so painfully, obviously wrong.
About 2 hours in, the film introduces more characters and a subplot that turns into the main plot. In the first film, the human mission on Pandora was to mine unobtainium. The reason they wanted the Na’vi to move was because Hometree was on top of the largest quantity of the metal on Pandora. This film never once mentions unobtainium; instead there’s a new Mcguffin, which is the fluid extracted from tulkuns which stops aging in humans. I don’t need to explain how bad on a story level this is; instead I think they should just invent a new expensive thing that the humans are after in each subsequent film, and pretend like the previous things were never mentioned.
The way the substance is extracted is by elaborate tulkun hunting, which Quaritch uses to lure Jake out after torching Na’vi villages along the coast didn’t do the trick.
In one of the many subplots, Lo’ak, as mentioned, is stranded by Aonung. A banished tulkun, Payakan saves him and befriends him. Because Payakan is banished, when Jake tells the Metkayina to send the tulkun away, to save them from Quaritch, Payakan doesn’t know so he gets tagged by the hunters. In incredible dramatic irony, Quaritch once again captures the kids and forces Jake to come out of hiding.
There is a very stupid fight between Jake and Quaritch, during which all of Quaritch’s squid and Neteyem die, and the fight ends in a stalemate as Lo’ak saves Jake and Spider saves Quaritch.
In the end Jake realizes what he should’ve known from the start, BEFORE a bunch of Na’vi, including his son died for NOTHING, which is that no place is safe while the humans are on Pandora. Except this film can’t even do that right, because in the end it’s not like Jake returns to the Forest with Metkayina reinforcements.
Once again, it makes NO sense that Jake a) ran and b) actually believed that Quaritch wouldn’t find him or wouldn’t hurt his kids to get to him. Moreover the fact that Neytiri, THE best hunters on Pandora, and literal leader of the Na’vi agreed to let Jake do this is ridiculous. She already killed Quaritch! She is able to destroy whole planes with one arrow!
Moreover, if Jake ran because he was worried Spider would be used by Quaritch to find him, why wouldn’t he try and save him?
The thing that really gets me is that the film is on Jake’s side. No one ever stands up to him, and even when people challenge him, the movie contorts itself to somehow make him right in the end. How do you take a character whose whole motivation was that he was the chosen one, who changed into a different alien race to protect the people he met, the people he was so devoted to he LITERARY died for them, and makes him a coward that selfishly runs and hides? And for what? Because the man who he already killed once is back?
Jake Sully deserves better than this. His arc in the first film was so simple, yet so effective; he was self-involved, he was reckless, he was selfish, and he learned how to become a leader, he sacrificed everything to help right the wrong he recognized humans were doing.
This film takes that character and downgrades him back to being selfish and self-involved, and worse, makes him a coward. Jake Sully from 13 years ago would never use civilians as a shield between him and Quritch. The Jake who learned what Hometree means, and why the Na’vi have to fight, and can’t just move, would never tell the Metkayina to send their tulkun away. And worse, this time the movie thinks he’s right.
The Way of Water is a case study in how not to make a sequel. It retreads the original, but it also devalues it. Watching it made me yearn for the simple yet competent storytelling of the first. This is just a mess.
If you only care about the visual splendor of Pandora, maybe go see it. If you care at all about the story, stay far far away.

Tumblr media
Hello, lovely humans!
This blog is officially ACTIVE. And I couldn’t be more excited to getting back to writing for pleasure.
As many of you know, a few years ago I took a leap into writing professionally and now I am a full-time interactive fiction narrative designer, writer, and editor. While I adore my job, I also spend most of my time writing things based on storylines designed by others, few things solely of my own invention. And writing begets more writing. The more you do it, the more you want to do it, the more you are stimulated by the act itself. And so, even though my writing schedule is more busy than ever, I need to counter it with writing that is strictly for fun, otherwise I am going to burn out completely.
So thanks for your patience on this journey. I am SO THRILLED to celebrate with you.
To celebrate, we’re going to do some stories based on prompts and add some new fandoms to the mix.
Tumblr media
(yes, the good place gifs are back)
The Rules:
Must be following me (@ardentmuse)
Must submit me an ask with a number of a prompt and a character
Must like this post
Please reblog, but this isn’t required :)
Only one submission per person, please!
Block “#ardentmuse welcome back” if you don’t want to see these for whatever reason (though some of my best work comes from prompts)
Each ask will become a reader-insert imagine. Aiming for ~1k words for each of these, but we’ll see where the spirits take me.
Note that these will be slower than my previous turn around on these. My goal is one per day, to be cut off in ~3 weeks, so it is likely I won’t get to every prompt. I’ll do my best.
Character list and prompt list below the cut.
Hugs, Lia
Characters:
Note: all responses will be reader inserts (no x ships). Also, this list is off the top of my head so if I missed anyone that you really want to see, let me know.

The Prompts from Futurama:
Good news, everyone.
At the risk of sounding negative, no.
I love Y/N, always and forever.
This is it. The moment we should have trained for.
For a split second, my common sense was overwhelmed by pity.
I never even told her I loved her.
Well, you obviously won’t listen to reason.
It’s when women are polite to each other you know there’s a problem.
...plus some other emotions which are weird and deeply confusing.
When you look this good, you don’t have to know anything.
Hey, sexy mama.
This is the worst kind of discrimination. The kind against me.
Thank you all for the inspiring advice, but I’m perfectly happy with my life the way it is.
Life is about decisions.
Oh wait, you’re serious.
You leave me breathless.
Everyone, I have a very dramatic announcement.
We can all fight when we’re drunk.
It’s all so complicated with the flowers and the romance and the lies upon lies.
I’m feeling a strange new emotion I have never felt before.
You lost the woman of your dreams but you still have [xxxx].
Let’s knock this up a notch!
Gimme your biggest, strongest, cheapest drink!
I know who you are. You're the woman I've waited for my entire life.
You know what cheers me up? Other people’s misfortune.
I really ought to do something but I am already in my pajamas.
Valentine’s Day is coming up?
I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.
Of course I'm being irrational, I'm in love!
Let's get the hell out of here already!
What the hell is that thing?
You know, someone ought to teach you a lesson.
You should say something else.
It really makes me happy to see you right now.
What kind of party is this?
I can explain.
But of everyone I ever dated, you're probably in the top ten.
It's been quite a journey.
What a thoughtful and considerate thing for you to say.
Look, I know it's not much consolation. But, I understand how you feel.

Miscellaneous headcanons
Green Gregory’s crew was called the Red-Handed Jacks and was the most successful crew in all of Candle Cove in their time. (Greg doesn’t play this up though.)
Also, he was nicknamed “Green” Gregory because he gets seasick easily.
I'm retconning what I said about sirens being solitary. They actually live in one giant village that's made up of sunken ships. Whenever ships sail over that area, they get sunken and made into living spaces.
Also, I’m retconning their abilities a little bit. Sirens are able to influence people’s emotions, desires, and neurological states (e.g., their urge to sleep), but they CANNOT control people’s wills. In other words, they can make people WANT to jump overboard but whether or not a person CHOOSES to jump overboard is up to the person. Like, they don't have total control over people. (I thought it would be more interesting if sirens didn't have such a crazy amount of leverage in, say, fight scenarios, and had to think cleverly and strategize rather than rely totally on their magic.)
Percy developed his belief about bravery = good and cowardice = bad (and his subsequent self-loathing from being cowardly) by trying to imitate Schot, who was always very stoic. But the only reason Schot was so stoic was because he was trying to repress his trauma and put on a brave face for his son. To make him feel safe. He never meant for Percy to think that he would be unworthy if he stopped being brave.
I know that the wiki says that the people who live in the Sand Lands are human, but I'm gonna ignore that because, I mean, the ocean BOILS in the Sand Lands. I don't think humans can survive in that climate. So yeah, I headcanon the people who come from the Sand Lands (Sunny included) to be a different race called Sandlandians, who are able to survive in hot climates and look sort of reptilian.
In the early days of the Laughingstock Crew, Dr. Heartfelt would stay aboard the ship and babysit Milo whenever the rest of the crew would go out to fight/look for treasure/whatever. Milo doesn't remember this at all, though, or at least he acts like he doesn’t. When he rejoined the crew, he had no idea who Heartfelt was. (Heartfelt took this hard. He was like a nephew to him!! How can he not remember?)

BNHA Chapter 327 Spoiler Analysis: Home Sweet Home
OH MY GOD, GUYS!!!  DEKU GETS A BATH!!!! 🎉🛁 🧼   My broccoli boy finally gets squeaky clean, gets some sleep, and we finally get some R&R time with the Class 1-A kids.  It’s not close to the happy-go-lucky days of old, but it’s some time with the kids nonetheless.  I’m glad Horikoshi put some heart and humor in this chapter because god knows we needed it.  But, let’s be real, this is the calm before the storm:
The chapter starts off with what everyone and Horikoshi has been wanting for Deku since he went on his mission: A motherfuckin’ bath 🛀 🧼🛁!   Kaminiari and Kirishima lead the Class 1-A boys to carry Deku into their side of the UA Alliance bathhouse (looks real nice btw) and give him a good power-wash.  The whole sequence is very comical!  The boys are rushing in and poor Deku has this O_O face on him like “what is happening?” 😂 We also see some of the boys butt naked 😳  It’s clear that Horikoshi had fun drawing this thing and it was fun to read 💚
Bakugo is with them of course and you can actually see his scars from when Shigaraki stabbed him.  He’s not bleeding, but you can see those scar patches on his skin.  I’m curious of how fan artist are going to draw him from now on.  I would like to see that fan art 👀
There’s also some bubble sfx coving Bakugo’s crotch and a translator said it might say dick or penis.  I’m curious what the officials will say.
But, Bakugo being Bakugo is still aggressive towards his classmates.  More playfully than before, but still.  He reminds everyone that he still intends on being the best there is and that everyone is still his rivals (also friends, Bakugo).  HE EVEN MAKES AN ATTEMPT TO CALL DEKU IZUKU!  LIKE HE ALMOST SAID “DEKU” BUT HE CHANGED IT TO IZUKU AT THE LAST MINUTE!  AND DEKU SAYS THAT CALLING HIM DEKU IS JUST FINE LIKE THAT ANGER THAT ORIGINATED FROM THE NICKNAME ISN’T THERE ANYMORE AND IT’S A FREINDLY NICKNAME BKDK FRIENDSHIP GROWTH YOU LOVE TO SEE IT 🧡💚
After Deku’s bath, he’s sitting in the commons talking to the rest of Class 1-A.  Well, most of them.  Mina tells Deku that Ochako and a few other students went to bed after everything became ok again.  So, I definitely didn’t see Tsuyu, and it looks like Shoji, Aoyama, and Hagakare weren’t in this chapter either.  Ochako I understand; her speech must’ve been emotionally taxing.  Aoyama and Hagakare are the top suspects for being the traitor in the fandom and this isn’t helping their cases.  I don’t know about Tsuyu and Shoji though.  They’re both mutant-types, but characters like Ojiro or mutant-like people like Jiro, Mina or Tokoyami didn’t get outcasted.  Horikoshi did hint that Shoji would be getting something soon.  But, I really am just speculating here.
Now that Deku’s back, everyone has questions for him.  Though I understand why, this has gotta be overwhelming for Deku.  At least they’re not mad at him for hiding OFA.  They seem very understanding actually.
Then my ❄️🔥 boy, Shoto Todoroki, comes in all handsome right out of the baths 💙  He’s drying his right side while you can see a steam cloud on his left.  So, it is canon that Shoto drys himself naturally with his heat. His entrance is so pretty that even Mineta’s questioning it (shut up, Mineta, you’ll never be as beautiful as him).  And yes, I might be a Shoto simp, don’t judge me I see y’all too 👀
Anyway, Shoto asks everyone to let Deku sleep since that was pretty much the whole reason they brought him back.  Problem is, Deku can’t because he really needs to apologize to All Might for abandoning him.  AND AFTER HE SAYS THAT THERE’S A DETAILED PANEL OF SHOTO POINTING TO ALL MIGHT LIKE “UH, MIDORIYA? HE’S RIGHT THERE” AND ALL MIGHT LOOKING FROM THE WINDOW LIKE A HORROR VILLAIN WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE 😭
All Might comes in and apologizes to Deku for not being able to support him when he needed it, but Deku says that All Might support him more than enough.  Mina also scolds All Might for not saying anything when he left.  She wants All Might to apologize to everyone for that.  Though I’m glad Deku and All Might have reconciled (I honestly thought that last convo between them was going to be THE LAST for a hot minute), Mina has a point.  All Might did bail on all of them without any warning.  Kinda messed up in general.
All Might apologizes and he is going to fight with everyone regardless of his physical state so that he can see that flame continue to shine.  However, he warns the kids that they got info on the villains and that the final decisive battle is coming soon.  If the whole “Final Arc” thing hasn’t been hammered into your head, there you go.  I’m also glad that Stain’s speech did end up motivating All Might further.  Who knew?
So, All Might is off to help Endeavor since he’s got unfinished business to take care of.  But, the kids are wondering why Endeavor (and probably Hawks) isn’t entering UA entirely yet.  Shot reminds them that Endeavor is still connected to Dabi and that his presence alone would cause more discourse.  People’s minds can’t change that easily.  Shoto of all people would know.
As Deku FINALLY SLEEPS 💤 and Shoto puts a blanket over him (possibly warmed by his left side 🔥) 💙💚 Shoto acknowledges how his presence might be making people anxious too even though it’s not his fault at all (thank you, Kirishima for doubling down on this btw ❤️🪨).  But, things are different and Shoto’s going to show that so that everyone can be at ease like he wants as a hero.  There’s even this sweet small smile on his beautiful face as he says this.  He’s grown so much and he’s pretty to boot I love him so much *HANDS IN FACE* 💙❄️🔥
EVEN KIRISHIMA’S CRYING FROM HOW MANLY SHOTO IS I LOVE THESE KIDS!!!!
And now Jiro steps up and says her piece.  That she knows how hard it is to convince everyone to change their minds for the better.  Like with those two critics from the Culture Fest.  Even so, they accomplished this before, so she thinks they can do it again.  She even gathers all the band members to emphasize on this.  I love how Jiro uses her earphone jacks to rally the band and how she literally drags Bakugo by the shirt for a cute group shot.  None of these kids are afraid of Bakugo anymore LOL 😂!  Also, Momo is the tallest out of all of them in this line up shot (except for Bakugo who’s still being dragged on the ground).  I think she’s roughly 5ft 6-7 inches?  She’s the tallest of the girls I know that, but damn.  She towers all of them.  Even me...  She’s also very pretty in this shot and it’s her birthday as I’m posting this, so happy b-day Momo ❤️
And we get a beautiful panel of Jiro leading everyone to make sure that they’ll go beyond with making everything better than it was before.  We get a nice group shot of the rest of the class agreeing with her with a smile including Shoto with a small one (did I mention that I love him?) 💙💙💙 And Deku’s in the center still sleeping away.  I hope he has good dreams *kisses forehead*💚  And go Jiro for stepping up to the plate too 💜!  All these kids have grown so much.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Finally, the last pages show Endeavor, Hawks, and Best Jeanist going somewhere, maybe Tartarus.  They got info out of Dr. Ujiko via polygraph and the Nomu Research Group at Central Hospital.  They predict that they have 2 months until Shigaraki’s ready to go again, so they’ll need 1 month of preparation.  But, the info Stain gave All Might gave them more info.  His letter ended up being a personal letter to All Might (Stain really is that nuts...), but there was a microchip in the blade Stain left containing the security records from Tartarus.  It’s not stated how this info affected the mission at hand, but it sounds like it has to do something with the time frame.  So, I’m curious if they have less time to prepare or more?  Given how this is the Final Arc, Imma say less.
Finally, the teaser asks “How are the villains moving?”  I wonder if that means we’re switching to the villain’s next week.  I would love to hang out with the kids more, but I would also like to know what our villains are up to.  Like, where the hell is Himiko Toga?  Is Spinner still questioning shit?  What happened to Mr. Compress after he mauled himself to help Shigaraki and the others escape?  Also I think we need more info on this dude’s backstory given he’s the grandson of the famous Robin Hood villain who’s name definitely didn’t escape me... 😐  Is Dabi laughing his ass off from the utter chaos he started?  Is AFO still smiling like the evil mastermind he is?  Is Shigaraki as crispy as he was earlier?  I was going to ask about Twice but... 😭
So, yeah!  Love this chapter.  Really good transition chapter into whatever happens next.  I’m kinda sad we didn’t see Deku fight off more past villains during his vigilante days.  We got Muscular and Overhaul and I think that’s it?  Didn’t see any of Overhaul’s minions or that teeth-blade villain (Fish-something?; he broke out, but we haven’t seen him since) or Re-Destro or his goons.  I don’t count as Gentle or LaBrava as villains anymore and they were never truly evil to begin with.  Regardless, it was a really cool arc to see a more dark side of Deku.  I’m really glad Horikoshi made great use of his bunny hood and metal mask finally.  Deku really did look demonic for some time.  Also, seeing Deku badass is always a plus.  And seeing the deconstruction of hero society and the possible reconstruction of it was really good too.  Not everything is sunshine and rainbows, unfortunately, but we can do our best to make it that way.
I’m also glad that we finally got our kids back in top form.  Not just being heroes, but being teenagers too.  They all had great moments especially Iida, Ochako, and now Shoto as they should.  But, Bakugo’s apology was peak for me.  Over 320 chapters of development and build-up lead to that moment and it really is one of the best in the series.  It lives in my head rent free.
So, we got 1-2 months in-manga-time until what is probably the final battle of the series.  God, I can’t believe we’re actually nearing the end of this series.  I started reading it back in 2018 when shit was rough for me. I found this series after listening to the music and reading the hype around it.  I watched the show then I read the manga and it really helped me.  Saved me from a dark place actually.  I will miss this series when it’s done and I will be greatly for the joy Horikoshi has gifted us.  I’ll try to save the farewells for later.  I’d say this series has at least 1-1 1/2 years to go.
Me @ the kids and All Might:

What do you think about Will just before the "Choices" talk with Jack on AWE left Beckett 'breadcrumbs'? Do you think he would betray all the pirates by taking him to Shipwreck Cove? It would certainly make Lizzie hate him, I think. Do you think that in a way Will's making the "right choice" in the end having deceived Jones and choosing to marry Elizabeth was largely influenced by Jack? Because I think he was more than determined to choose to save his father and betray all the pirates...
// I think at this point Will was in a desperate situation. From his point of view, all pirates had done for him was betray him and use him. He had no guarantee that Jack had intended to free him from Jones and he felt alone in that everyone had this grand plan that others were following. He was bitter, frustrated, and dearly wanted to save his father to reclaim some of the time he had lost. He was angry with Elizabeth for keeping secrets and had spent so long believing she was in love with Jack and that he'd never been good enough for her. She seemed so determined for him to be this fantastical pirate that he tried to be 'more like Jack' but even Jack proved disappointing and fallible so he was willing to be more ruthless. He wanted to be the right sort of pirate for himself and Elizabeth and to do his own thing since no one else seemed to care.
I think, whilst a part of him hoped he could bargain with Beckett and Jones to get everything he wanted, he knew they couldn't be trusted. One path would be to get himself and Elizabeth free from everything and sod the pirates, which she would have hated him for, but as much as he began to despise Jack he also bought into the legend of him, that if Jack had been fine with him committing this betrayal, the man had a plan. He banked on Jack doing something but kept backup options of bargains, with his final last ditch option likely being stabbing Jones' heart himself as soon as he got the chance. One way or another he was probably going to end up following his destiny.
What truly solidifies Will's choices is the Parley scene on the beach. He still has his options open until that moment. Once he sees Elizabeth is Pirate King, it tells him that Jack isn't being entirely selfish (even though he's manipulated Liz where he needed her) and that Liz is capable of being in control of a side he wasn't sure whether to trust. At first, it's Elizabeth herself that draws his trust but he realises it was Jack who made it happen. He also realises that Jack has a plan and by that point he doesn't much care if Jack's going to do away with Jones for him.
tl;dr Yes I think he would have betrayed everyone for the sake of trying to save himself, his father, and Elizabeth, all whom he deemed innocents, but Elizabeth and Jack proved themselves and won him back. He was content to follow once he had faith in something again.

Cork History | National Heritage Week 2021
by Richard Forrest
As part of National Heritage Week 2021, we take a look back at some of the more interesting history stories discovered by Cork City Libraries’ Local Studies department.
The Botany of the Bohereens
Tumblr media
Cork polymath, Richard Dowden, fell very sick to fever at the time of the Great Famine. During a slow recovery he eventually felt up to walks in the countryside near the city. During these he found he had leisure and energy enough for botanical exploration, one of his many diverse interests. This eventually resulted in the publication in 1852 of his “Walks After Wildflowers”, subtitled “The Botany of the Bohereens”. Richard prefaced his “botanical chit-chat” with the beautiful illustration you see here. But who was responsible for it? Well, it was a mystery lady whose name we at Local Studies would love to discover. Richard simply tells us that he had a kind lady friend “to thank for the pretty and tasteful illustrative vignette which ushers in these pages but I may not give her name, dear reader, without hurting her modest secrecy”.
Diddledum Club
Tumblr media
Admit it! You’ve always wanted to know what a Diddledum Club was. A folk music band? An Alice in Wonderland Appreciation Society? Well, neither. Local Studies can now assuage your curiosity. A Diddledum Club was simply a savings club in times when money was scarce. Their heyday was before the foundation of the national Credit Union movement and they were especially popular in the run up to Christmas. Indeed, the Yuletide Diddledum Club was the most common variant. Usually a neighbourly-minded individual got the ball rolling by collecting penny subscriptions and handling the paperwork, before releasing funds back to the payees for a spending bonanza. Unfortunately, embezzling opportunities sometimes proved tempting and in 1938, a fowl plucker for a city centre firm was charged with fraudulently converting sums entrusted to her by her colleagues. The court decided she was more of a “muddler” than anything else and had gotten all mixed up. Although witnesses did say she was down in Crosshaven in August (living the high life?) Anxious to defer prison, His Lordship described the accused as “an old woman, a grandmother and not in the best of health”. In a similar case, a defendant was admonished for leaving her clients vainly calling out, “Alice, where art thou?” for their money. Maybe there is a Wonderland connection after all.
The Victoria Hospital – a Snapshot from 1921
Tumblr media
This largely charitable hospital on Infirmary Road was established in 1874. One hundred years ago, it had 50 beds and treated 391 internal patients and 2,005 external. It began 1921 £80 in debit but reduced this to £28 by the close of the year. Here we see a photograph of a salubrious looking Children’s Ward. Note the rocking horse and the large toy cow! The Hospital Council had a fair representation of Sirs, Colonels, Ladies and even a Countess in 1921. The Tabitha Guild supplied most of the wants of the children’s wards, including 70 garments and £8 5s. 6d. for further purchases. The Annual Report 1921 has a nice informal tone. It mentions that £32 was spent on the installation of electric radiators and that the absence of floor covering on an upper floor was a source of considerable noise to those below. That problem was addressed with less expenses than expected. Now, time to have a hunt through our collections at Local Studies to see if we can find a photo of a children’s ward in the North Infirmary in 1921.
A Case of What Might Have Been!
Tumblr media
Here is one proposal that was mooted when Cork was searching for a downstream crossing of the River Lee. The City was frantically looking for ways to ease traffic congestion and stimulate economic growth and our picture is from a report by a firm of consulting engineers drafted in 1980. The eventual outcome was, of course, the Jack Lynch Tunnel. Just as well, walks along the Marina wouldn’t have been half so pleasant. The Library’s Local Studies department will bring you more of these alternative futures in the near …. future!
John Fitzgerald’s Diary 1793
Tumblr media
John Fitzgerald, teacher and convivialist lived on Drawbridge Street (behind today’s Easons) in the 1790s. He had an insatiable curiosity for events both local and international and has left us with an evocative record of his life and times. Here’s what was occupying John’s thoughts this week all of 238 years ago: July 7th: Drank a share of 12 pots of porter at Cotter’s. Paid John Connell, the barber, 2s. 6d. July 8th: A fine warm day. Commencement of the new moon. Bandon races began. Old potatoes 11 d. per wt. and coal 7s. a barrel. John Hely Hutchinson, our M.P., and Sir William Clarke, our Sheriff, are both now fighting in the entrenchments at Vallenciennes. July 9th: Beautiful weather. Met Dr. Orpen on Wandesford Bridge and he told me to walk as little as I could. July 10th: Fine and warm. 500 recruits from Dungannon arrived at Cork for embarkation. Frigates and transports at Cove to take away the 58th and 63rd Regiments. The journeymen bakers striking. July 11th: Three troops of horse came from Bandon to quell the rioters in Limerick. They stayed but an hour to refresh. July 12th: At break of day there were tremendous claps of thunder and heavy rain. Several flashes of lightning. Mr. Sandiford was buried. July 13th: Gloomy sky, slight rain and close. Patty Chamberlain’s gown was stolen. Took mutton broth for my dinner. Drank three tods at Bat Murphy’s with John Baily and Jack Conway.
The Fingerpost
Tumblr media
A fingerpost is a traditional signpost consisting of one or more ‘fingers’. Erected in cast iron or wood, the poles were painted black or white and the fingers had black lettering on a white background. It is thought that the oldest in existence is in England and dates back to 1669. It points to Oxford, Warwick, 'Gloster' and 'Woster'. Recommendations from 1921 advised 21⁄2 or 3 inch high upper case lettering and, from 1933, that poles be of alternating black and white bands. Mileage is typically measured to the nearest quarter mile although fifths and eighths of a mile were used in parts of Scotland. Cork’s fine fingerpost example at Douglas shews the city 2 ¾ miles, Passage 4 ½ and Carrigaline 5 ½. A major review of road signage in Ireland was carried out in 1977.Just how old is our Douglas landmark? Well, for a century or more, the post served as the meeting point for the South Union Hunt. Mind, they would look lost on their horses on today’s modern roundabout! A Grand Jury presentment dating from 1845 tells us that road repairs was under way between “the gate of the Douglas Lunatic Asylum and the finger post”. Further back again, the old ballad has it that one of the brave 1798 men, Phil Carty, was tracked when slipping home “to old Donnybrook” and “his bosom bled from the cruel lead, of a well-aimed musket ball”. After that, his body was hung from “the Finger Post, where walks his ghost, that they made his gallows tree”. Though still standing proud and prominent, perhaps the post has already, in fact, gone the way of Phil’s ghost. The current occupant of the historic spot is a metal recreation from 2004!
