let’s talk about the mike and will convo on top of the car. not because it parallels jancy (tho it does), or the interruption trope (tho it happens), or the [tender, emotional music] (tho it’s there), but because of what is specifically said. mike says “i should’ve explained myself cuz then maybe eleven would’ve taken me with her and things would be different, but…i didn’t…i didn’t know what to say.” then will says “sometimes i think it’s just scary to open up like that. to say how you really feel. especially to people you care about the most. because what if…what if they don’t like the truth?”

what if they don’t like the truth?

that is such a choice to use that specific line. as an audience, we know that will is talking about his own feelings for mike, but this little speech from will is also supposed to apply to mike’s situation with el. just like when will confesses his feelings to mike using el as a conduit, it’s supposed to also apply to el’s actual feelings for mike.

but the thing is, mike is thinking about the fact that he didn’t tell el he loves her. because if he had, maybe she would’ve taken him with her and things would be different. because “i love you” is what el wants to hear. if loving el is mike’s truth, why wouldn’t el like to hear it?

and then mike’s nod after, like he agrees with what will is saying. like he knows will is right. but why would el not like “the truth” of mike being in love with her?

unless that’s NOT the truth.

Chronically angry, child of divorce soap who hates fighting with Ghost because he always thinks it'll end with them splitting up, but he can't help himself.

Soap who gets so angry at injustices, or getting treated unfairly, of not getting heard, or getting brushed off, or whatever that he can't help but fight back. He can't help but to bite and rip and tear like some rabid beast.

And after the fact, all he can do it walk off and stew in his anger and pity, and expect the bad news. The news that Ghost had finally had enough of him. The news that Ghost can't take the fighting anymore. The news that Ghost is leaving him.

And he does nothing to fix it. Fully and completely thinks that if Ghost wants him gone, then that's what he deserves. Believes that he's not worth the effort to stay.

And yet, by some miracle, Ghost always finds him. And he never ends it. And he apologizes to soap like it wasn't soap who started it. And if soap didn't know any better he'd think that Ghost likes the pushback. That Ghost likes soap when he fights and gets angry. But nobody wants that, so he always trues to be better.

el camino is so fucking insane. in the span of like a few hours, jesse had to go to todd's apartment, see a dead body, realize that todd has been keeping drew sharp's tarantula as a fucking pet, ride in a car trunk with said dead body, BURY said dead body by himself in his starved and beaten state, have his spirit totally and completely broken by the faint promise of personhood, fully make the transition to kicked dog, and he had to do all that awful shit while hanging out with todd's annoying ass 😭

This just hit me

"With selfless hearts--" !?!?!?!?

Mike is literally being framed as the heart here, and while that is up to debate for a lot of people, it doesn't change the fact that within the story he is narratively given this role by Will and it is even reinforced at this very moment before his monologue to El.

While I do fully believe this line is meant to hold dual meaning spanning multiple characters in the finale, who are capable of being the heart, having hearts, and having been through similar anguish that revolved around them being selfless i.e. Max, Eddie, etc., it already exists as a verbalized concept for Mike. It's who he is (in Will's eyes), and in this moment, they are choosing to highlight that.

And so does that mean this is a 'selfless heart' moment for Mike? Is Mike here caring more about others wants and needs than his own? Why would telling his girlfriend he loves her be selfless? Unless it's what he thinks she wants and needs, but not what he wants and needs?...
