see, even though i kept singing, i was still crying alone
in the music festival where i danced frantically
are the sounds reaching your ears? lomia, lomia!
i fell in an almost magical love with a sound,
which i had finally met after years of separation,
and i didn't even notice. 🌹

Emil Ferris’s long-awaited “My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book Two”
Tumblr media
NEXT WEEKEND (June 7–9), I'm in AMHERST, NEW YORK to keynote the 25th Annual Media Ecology Association Convention and accept the Neil Postman Award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity.
Tumblr media
Seven years ago, I was absolutely floored by My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, a wildly original, stunningly gorgeous, haunting and brilliant debut graphic novel from Emil Ferris. Every single thing about this book was amazing:
https://memex.craphound.com/2017/06/20/my-favorite-thing-is-monsters-a-haunting-diary-of-a-young-girl-as-a-dazzling-graphic-novel/
The more I found out about the book, the more amazed I became. I met Ferris at that summer's San Diego Comic Con, where I learned that she had drawn it over a while recovering from paralysis of her right – dominant – hand after a West Nile Virus infection. Each meticulously drawn and cross-hatched page had taken days of work with a pen duct-taped to her hand, a project of seven years.
The wild backstory of the book's creation was matched with a wild production story: first, Ferris's initial publisher bailed on her because the book was too long; then her new publisher's first shipment of the book was seized by the South Korean state bank, from the Panama Canal, when the shipper went bankrupt and its creditors held all its cargo to ransom.
My Favorite Thing Is Monsters told the story of Karen Reyes, a 10 year old, monster-obsessed queer girl in 1968 Chicago who lives with her working-class single mother and her older brother, Deeze, in an apartment house full of mysterious, haunted adults. There's the landlord – a gangster and his girlfriend – the one-eyed ventriloquist, and the beautiful Holocaust survivor and her jazz-drummer husband.
Karen narrates and draws the story, depicting herself as a werewolf in a detective's trenchcoat and fedora, as she tries to unravel the secrets kept by the grownups around her. Karen's life is filled with mysteries, from the identity of her father (her brother, a talented illustrator, has removed him from all the family photos and redrawn him as the Invisible Man) to the purpose of a mysterious locked door in the building's cellar.
But the most pressing mystery of all is the death of her upstairs neighbor, the beautiful Annika Silverberg, a troubled Holocaust survivor whose alleged suicide just doesn't add up, and Karen – who loved and worshiped Annika – is determined to get to the bottom of it.
Karen is tormented by the adults in her life keeping too much from her – and by their failure to shield her from life's hardest truths. The flip side of Karen's frustration with adult secrecy is her exposure to adult activity she's too young to understand. From Annika's cassette-taped oral history of her girlhood in an Weimar brothel and her escape from a Nazi concentration camp, to the sex workers she sees turning tricks in cars and alleys in her neighborhood, to the horrors of the Vietnam war, Karen's struggle to understand is characterized by too much information, and too little.
Ferris's storytelling style is dazzling, and it's matched and exceeded by her illustration style, which is grounded in the classic horror comics of the 1950s and 1960s. Characters in Karen's life – including Karen herself – are sometimes depicted in the EC horror style, and that same sinister darkness crowds around the edges of her depictions of real-world Chicago.
These monster-comic throwbacks are absolute catnip for me. I, too, was a monster-obsessed kid, and spent endless hours watching, drawing, and dreaming about this kind of monster.
Tumblr media
But Ferris isn't just a monster-obsessive; she's also a formally trained fine artist, and she infuses her love of great painters into Deeze, Karen's womanizing petty criminal of an older brother. Deeze and Karen's visits to the Art Institute of Chicago are commemorated with loving recreations of famous paintings, which are skillfully connected to pulp monster art with a combination of Deeze's commentary and Ferris's meticulous pen-strokes.
Seven years ago, Book One of My Favorite Thing Is Monsters absolutely floored me, and I early anticipated Book Two, which was meant to conclude the story, picking up from Book One's cliff-hanger ending. Originally, that second volume was scheduled for just a few months after Book One's publication (the original manuscript for Book One ran to 700 pages, and the book had been chopped down for publication, with the intention of concluding the story in another volume).
But the book was mysteriously delayed, and then delayed again. Months stretched into years. Stranger rumors swirled about the second volume's status, compounded by the bizarre misfortunes that had befallen book one. Last winter, Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston published an article detailing a messy lawsuit between Ferris and her publishers, Fantagraphics:
https://bleedingcool.com/comics/fantagraphics-sued-emil-ferris-over-my-favorite-thing-is-monsters/
The filings in that case go some ways toward resolve the mystery of Book Two's delay, though the contradictory claims from Ferris and her publisher are harder to sort through than the mysteries at the heart of Monsters. The one sure thing is that writer and publisher eventually settled, paving the way for the publication of the very long-awaited Book Two:
https://www.fantagraphics.com/products/my-favorite-thing-is-monsters-book-two
Book Two picks up from Book One's cliffhanger and then rockets forward. Everything brilliant about One is even better in Two – the illustrations more lush, the fine art analysis more pointed and brilliant, the storytelling more assured and propulsive, the shocks and violence more outrageous, the characters more lovable, complex and grotesque.
Everything about Two is more. The background radiation of the Vietnam War in One takes center stage with Deeze's machinations to beat the draft, and Deeze and Karen being ensnared in the Chicago Police Riots of '68. The allegories, analysis and reproductions of classical art get more pointed, grotesque and lavish. Annika's Nazi concentration camp horrors are more explicit and more explicitly connected to Karen's life. The queerness of the story takes center stage, both through Karen's first love and the introduction of a queer nightclub. The characters are more vivid, as is the racial injustice and the corruption of the adult world.
Tumblr media
I've been staring at the spine of My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book One on my bookshelf for seven years. Partly, that's because the book is such a gorgeous thing, truly one of the great publishing packages of the century. But mostly, it's because I couldn't let go of Ferris's story, her characters, and her stupendous art.
After seven years, it would have been hard for Book Two to live up to all that anticipation, but goddammit if Ferris didn't manage to meet and exceed everything I could have hoped for in a conclusion.
There's a lot of people on my Christmas list who'll be getting both volumes of Monsters this year – and that number will only go up if Fantagraphics does some kind of slipcased two-volume set.
In the meantime, we've got more Ferris to look forward to. Last April, she announced that she had sold a prequel to Monsters and a new standalone two-volume noir murder series to Pantheon Books:

portraits of the vatore siblings [in-game wall art]
Tumblr media
I'm having a lot of fun putting the Vatores in period clothes, so I made some renders of them dressed up in 1890s-1940s clothing and threw them into that big frame from Vampires.
download [sfs]
This was a pretty big project: 3 cc wall art pieces covering 6 decades of fashion with 12 separate outfits, which resulted in 18 individual renders and 144 total swatches. Also, the frame itself is huge. I prefer them sized down (shift + [ in buy mode) but they are 100% the type to own larger-than-life portraits of themselves.
My hc is that the Vatores were born in the late 1930s/early 1940s, so imo they aren't actually old enough to have worn any of these clothes when they were first in style. I think they dressed up like it’s old times and took a buncha pictures just to confuse people trying to figure out how old they really are. Sibling bonding!
Included below are all 18 renders, with cc and full color below the cut.

You guys this season is 100% about items and artifacts, this episode confirms it. It's like SCP or Control in that regard - oddities (possibly prototypes for philosopher's stone) gathered and categorized by The Magnus Institute Manchester.
This is much different from TMA where it was very specifically about powers affecting people - items they used (artifacts and leitners) were mentioned to almost always be used improperly and their endgoal was to corrupt and twist person who wielded them and people around them, they weren't instruments on their own, they were extensions of their Entity the same way an avatar is. This is not the case here because of two people specifically: Needles and The Dice guy.
The thing about avatars was that no matter if you were afriad of them or not their corrupting power and presence always affected you in some way and they themselves were some way supernaturally in contact with their Entity - this is very common Lovecraftian concept, trying to get close to those "Gods" corrupts you and warps you, subconsciously making you do their bidding thus giving you this supernatural "confidence" in what you do.
Now look at Needles, we laughed at how he couldn't make the dispacher scared and got thrown off when he realized it, but it makes sense - outside of being made of needles there is no paranormal infulence helping him, he's just unwell. Same goes for The Dice guy, he even mentions trying to "become" a type of person we would expect from a TMA avatar, the trenchoat fedora stranger making people roll bad luck dice, but the moment things go south he ditches the dice and dies at the end due to his own stupidity, can you ever imagine a halfway-there Avatar doing such a thing? All this, because they are NOT Avatars: nobody is guiding them, nobody is whispering instructions in their ears and they do not actually feed of the mayhem they are spreading.
It's the items, they themselves are victims of somebody spreading them for data - this goes back to my "it's about alchemists making prototypes of a philosopher's stone" theory. All of those people are either test subjects for specific items/locations (like class-D personel in SCP) or test subjects themselves, transformed by somebody. This also goes back to the incident at Hilltop the volunteers were a project in themselves, self duplicating each one with an odd item, this was an attempt to apply infinite monkey theorem to philisopher's stone creation.

FOUR IN HAND by John Lennon
I never see anyone mention this, and honestly, we should talk about it more. John wrote this short play for the show Oh Calcutta! in 1969, a comedy revue organised by Ken Tynan. The skit is most likely inspired on The Beatles group wanks, which we all know about. Four In Hand is under the cut:
(Four chairs, backs to the audience. Facing them, a large projection screen divided into four sections, one for each chair. Three men impatiently waiting. A doorbell rings.)
1: There he is now. I told you he’d make it. (He opens the door.)
(George enters: he wears a fedora.)
1: If you’re going to join the group, George, you have to remember we always start on time.
George: Sorry I’m late, fellas.
2: We don’t like people breakin’ the rules, George.
George: I already said I’m sorry.
3: Look--We gonna talk, or we gonna jerk off?
1: Ok, let’s get started. This is your seat, George. Now this (pointing to screen) is a new kind of machine--a telepathic thought transmitter. Whatever you think about flashes on the screen. Now the rules of the game are this: all of us think of things to jerk off to--until somebody comes--and the first guy who comes has to stop everybody else from coming. Got it?
George: Got it.
1: All right. Let’s give it a try. Whatever comes to mind, George.
(1 goes to his seat. George sits between 2 and 3. Rhythmic music starts. Images start to flash rhythmically on the screens. The men’s arms start to move rhythmically in front of them. The screens facing 1, 2 and 3 show Hollywood and Playboy-type pinups. George’s screen remains blank. The rhythm builds up while screens 1, 2 and 3 are all pulsating with glamorous women. Suddenly, we hear the strains of the William Tell Overture, and during a crash of cymbals, a picture of the Lone Ranger flashes on George’s screen. All screens go blank and all four men stop masturbating.)
3: What the fuck was that?
1: What are ya tryin’ to do, George?
2 (rises, adjusting his pants): I told you not to invite outsiders.
George: I’m sorry, fellas, it’s just the first thing that came into my mind.
2: We haven’t had a vacancy in six months, George! Harvey only left because he got a divorce.
3: How’d you like a silver bullet up your ass?
1 (walking to George): You sure you’re all right, George?
George: I’m fine, thanks.
1: All right, let’s try it again.
(They all sit down again.)
1: And cut the horseshit, George.
(The music starts again and the images start to flash. They are slightly more nude than before--close shots of breasts and bottoms. By trial and error, the four screens begin to form a composite picture. George is dutifully collaborating. Finally, at the height of the rhythm, screen facing 1 shows a nude model’s head, screen facing 2 shows her breasts, screen facing 3, her legs. Pause. The recumbent image of the model is almost complete. Suddenly the strains of the William Tell Overture are heard again with another image of the Lone Ranger on George’s screen.)
George (exultantly): Aha! A-a-a-a-ah!
(He rises. His screen continues to flash the Lone Ranger. With one jabbing sweep of his arm, he flashes Lone Ranger pictures on the other screens as the music builds. As each image flashes, 1, 2 and 3 lose their concentration completely and give up the contest.)
George (turns as he goes to exit): See you next week, fellas.
1: Get the fuck outta here!!!
(Sound of four “whistling” gunshots as each remaining screen blacks out.)

Chapter 4 is here at last haha
Somehow, Oswald wasn’t expecting how young the kids were.
He knew how old they were, obviously. Jazz a few months shy of her eighteenth birthday, Danny sixteen as of October. He’d seen their records and their ages and even their pictures leading up to their sudden arrival in Gotham. Even so, he still found himself taken aback when he saw them in person for the first time.
It was the way that the pictures - school photos, artificial and flat by their nature - didn’t capture how fragile they actually were. The dark circles beneath their eyes, the slouch of their shoulders, the way they kept close, hands tangled together and knuckles white. It was the way that Danny, only a few inches taller than Oswald’s short stature, looked hollow-boned and breakable with his too-thin frame and worryingly pale skin and the mottled brown-green-yellow of half-healed bruises just visible where his long sleeves failed to hide them. The way that Jazz, taller than even Cosmina’s towering height, curled in on herself to try and look smaller, the pretense of a neat appearance falling apart in the face of polite smiles with fraying edges and bleeding nail beds and bloodshot eyes.
They were so young.

New Good Omens fic: Takedown / Reversal
Tumblr media
So the smut war ended and I was left with all this lovely smut still rattling around in my brain (thanks largely to the GOAD writers and artists and their fabulous imaginations), so I present it now to you!
I missed the boat on Top-Az day at the @goodomensafterdark sub, but this is definitely in the spirit of it.
Summary: After their near miss in 1941 with a bullet, Furfur, and Nazi zombies, Aziraphale and Crowley retire to the bookshop for a mellow evening of too much wine. Unfortunately, someone is wearing quite the saucy fedora, and someone else takes quite a fancy to it. Obviously wrestling and banging and angst must ensue.
(Part of the Intent to Possess series.)
Inspired by Gleafer's amazing art and headcanon of 1941 post-magic show/Furfur showdown of drunken wrestling and hat stealing and smooches, as posted here and here.* If you're not one of their Patreon members you are Missing Out. Also what the world needs now is another bittersweet 1941 fic, so here it is, you're welcome!
*Except I may have gotten a bit carried away, basically I borrowed Gleafer’s headcanon Bentley, crashed it thru several billboards and launched it off Smutangst Mountain. It was fun tho.
TW/CW: First time, wrestling, roughness, kissing, angst and porn, porn with feelings, divine possessiveness, frottage, hand job, pining while fucking, hair-pulling, bittersweet ending
More tags at AO3! In addition to tags, be warned: not a super happy ending here. There will be a second part from Crowley's POV (set in 1955) that hopefully I'll be able to drag out of the angst bin.
With big thanks to beta dbacklot99!💕

My ranking of The Magnus Protocol episodes thus far, from least to most great (and why):
20. Personal Screening. Too much build up, not enough pay off. Dumbest main character award.
19. Hard Reset. I just kept zoning out, sorry.
18. Pet Project. Sneks. Not bad, kind of lackluster.
17. Anti-Social. Others might put this lower, but it was so god awful that it at least made me laugh.
16. Solo Work. Corpse case hit me right in the heart, but the organic conversations need some work. And oh, miscommunication trope, they could never make me like you.
15. Social Stigma. Bit long-winded, though I do enjoy hearing avatars speak about losing their humanity and finding the "loving embrace" of their god. Compelling, even.
14. Running on Empty. Case was fine, would probably be lower if not for GERTRUDE. MOTHERFRICKIN'. ROBINSON.
13. Rolling With It. Love a return to form with a classic statement. But the fedora trench coat combo gave me high school flashbacks.
12. Give and Take. Stranger ritual? Hell yes. Only wish we got more.
11. Marked. Parts dragged, but very creative use of an email chain. "The deep will care for his bones..."
10. Making Adjustments. The body dysmorphia + body horror statements in TMA really struck a chord with me, as did this one. Not particularly "scary" though.
9. Futures. The inevitable demise of those who try to cheat death will always slap.
8. Saved Copy. "Huh, maybe the narrator will become evil out of jealousy-- OH."
7. Putting Down Roots. Constantly felt unsettled, and the professional/analytical language changing in time with the doctor's transformation was very well done.
6. Getting Off. Mister Bonzo's on his way he wants to stay he wants to play, Mister Bonzo's on his way he wants to stay he wants to play...
5. First Shift. For "canaries should stay above ground" and "some of him" alone.
4. Introductions. Yeah I'm a sucker for any Michael-esque character.
3. Saturday Night. Excitement and intrigue at every turn. Many questions posed but also an eagerness to decipher them. Also, "Can he read???"
2. Taking Notes. A haunting story that flowed like a withered old man was telling it directly to me beside his grand fireplace.
1. Well Run. Horrifying concepts, great B-plots, Lady Mowbray, excellent suspense and sound design. 10/10

OC Info and Mood Board
Here’s a Mood Board and OC Info for a Teen Wolf OC of mine: Enrico Mahealani
Tumblr media
Enrico Mahealani: Enrico is a curious, clever, and sophisticated kid, and is a close relative of Danny Mahealani. He moves in with Danny after he decides to move back to Beacon Hills (this is during/after the Teen Wolf Movie). With an obsession for criminology and incredible psychic powers to boot, he excels in criminal investigation and forensic analysis. Despite being an awkward teenager haunted by dead, he strives to use his gifts and skills to become a detective…. even if that means occasionally getting in the way of police work, and dragging Eli Hale into his investigations with or without his permission…. May god rest Sheriff Stilinski’s stressed out soul.
Appearance: Enrico has tanned, moderately brown skin with short, wavy yet slightly spiky black hair. Paired with his dark brown eyes and semi-formal style, he often exudes the look of a private academy student mixed with a scraggly noir detective, even sporting his own overcoat (but no fedora. He’s more of a fisherman’s cap guy anyway)
Gender: Male (he/him)
Age: 15-16
Height & Weight: 5’10ft / 177lb
Nationality: Hawaiian/Cuban-American
Species: Human Psychic
Powers: communication with the dead, astral projection, semi-clairvoyance, slight magic prowess
Personality: Enrico has a sophisticated yet casual way of presenting himself. Sure, he talks like a debate team mixed with a poetry teacher, but he’s not very outspoken and rather quiet at times. However, he is exceptionally blunt and straightforward, oftentimes getting straight to the point when talking.
Other Info: Enrico is the son of one of Danny’s Cousin. Technically first cousin once removed, which I simplify to just “relative”
He’s known about his abilities from a very young age, but doesn’t mention them due to being sent to several doctors and therapists, all trying to diagnose him. In his words, “Concern arises when you tell people you can see the dead”
Enrico was orphaned, moving in with Danny after loosing his father due to disease. He lost his mother years before in a car wreck.
He occasionally enjoys botany, and likes growing scorpion grasses, as well as tomato plants
Out of all the dead people who communicate with him in Beacon Hills, the ones he connects with the most is Erica, Boyd, and occasionally Derek, who he often sees in small flashes watching over Eli. He wishes to know why they’re so important, and why they continue to show up.
Music: a list of songs that give off Enrico’s vibe
Pursing My True Self - Persona 4
Space Cowboy - Jamiroquai
Heaven - Persona 4
Duvet - Bôa
Qué Será - Willie Colon
Memories of You - Persona 3
Face Claim
Model - Jose Oliva
Source - Ron Reyes on Twitter (fair warning, their photography is rather provocative, but good!)

@fionajames thank you so much for the kind words I’d be glad to tag you in any other posts I make about him.
Some of this stuff you’ve seen already, but I hope you enjoy what’s new
