Note to self: word prayers better when doing divinatory sessions
I think I've mentioned this before, but I do yes/no stone pulls on Sundays to ask for guidance about maintaining my health re: my commute because it's 2-2.5 hours each way via public transit if everything runs on time. It's rough on me in multiple ways and can lead to even more migraines than usual or being too fatigued to work at all, and it can be difficult to tell whether I'll have the spoons to go in person.
This past Sunday I was exhausted & stressed because of, you know, the horrors, and said my initial prayer a little differently than I usually do. I still invoked Apollo and Hermes as always, as both of them cover divination by lots, Apollo's domain covers health & disease, and he's the one I turn to for divination by default.
Now, the vast majority of the guidance and lessons Apollo has given have had to do with recognizing my physical & mental limits, especially around this issue. The answers I was getting this time around were...odd but not quite in the way they have been with just dud pulls, so I started asking clarifying questions to figure out what was going on. After a few - establishing that there was a reason for the answers but it wasn't a test or punishment or Apollo messing with me (which would have been. odd) - I realized that while I'd invoked Hermes as a god of divination by lots alongside Apollo, I had not explicitly asked him to act as a messenger and aid in communication this time around, nor had I asked Apollo to guide the divination session with the wording I usually use.
I think you can see where I'm going with this.
I re-said the prayer (correctly this time) and confirmed that it was, in fact, Hermes at first while re-doing the initial set of questions (which were much more consistent in the usual way), as well as confirming that the issue was the prayer wording. Lesson learned lol
#full transparency: shortly after the initial set of re-do questions i had a panic attack/meltdown (b/c of. again. the Horrors)#that was made worse by the third part of the session (some questions i thought to ask after the re-dos) being a dud#i did another pull wednesday morning after i had had a couple days to recover & the biggest stressor was over with#& i felt ready to re-engage with it#(& also knew that not clarifying the last part of the pull would make the Everything worse)#and i asked about each section (hermes -> commute question re-do -> the Bad Times questions)#and got *another* confirmation that it was actually hermes at first & that the middle section was accurate and (thankfully) that#the last one was not#i check my work *thoroughly* b/c tangible external things like divination are the most reliable things i have#b/c i cant always trust internal cues#coriander says#helpol#apollo#apollon#hermes#hellenic pagan#hellenic polytheism#hellenic community#divination#also! to be clear! ymmv when worshipping/working with/etc. deities#just b/c this was my experience doesnt mean this will be your experience!#also also. i personally dont believe all of the gods might do the sort of thing hermes did. he's a trickster god#which is why the possibility that it was him was on my radar in the first place#apollo doesnt have trickster aspects afaik (i could be wrong!) so it seemed off. and hermes wasnt. like. *impersonating* apollo#i didnt ask explicitly who it was at first b/c that's not a necessary part of my process- you dont *need* to clarify by default in helpol#& now that i know why it happened i can avoid the situation in the future & have a data point to compare to in case it *does* happen again

Back when we started Ellipsus (it's been eighty-four years… or two, but it sure feels like forever), we encountered generative AI.
Immediately, we realized LLMs were the antithesis of creativity and community, and the threat they posed to genuine artistic expression and collaboration. (P.S.: we have a lot to say about it.)
Since then, writing tools—from big tech entities like Google Docs and Microsoft Word, to a host of smaller platforms and publishers—have rapidly integrated LLMs, looking to capitalize on the novelty of generative AI. Now, our tools are failing us, corrupted by data-scraping and hostile to users' consent and IP ownership.
The future of creative work requires a nuanced understanding of the challenges ahead, and a shared vision—writers for writers. We know we're stronger together. And in a rapidly changing world, we know that transparency is paramount.
So… some Ellipsus facts:
We will never include generative AI in Ellipsus.
We will never access your work without explicit consent, sell your data, or use your work for exploitative purposes.
We believe in the strength of creative communities and the stories they tell—and we want to foster a space in which writers can connect and tell their stories in freedom and safety—without compromise.

So wait, let me just ask for clarity because I want to understand. Do you support AI art?
i support art made with spontaneous and hands-off processes, i support the creation of art tools that are more art than tool & allow people to "participate" in someone else's creation vicariously a-la picrew, i don't support the institution of "AI" as a consumer grade technology industry that promises impossible things and prioritizes appearances and marketability over usability, i believe that if "AI" allowed people to siphon images directly from their brain with no effort required then it would be a good thing but I believe this is fundamentally impossible until we figure out how to read minds and the focus on arguing for or against accessibility is missing the point, i believe AI art can only ever be a pale imitation of the process of commissioning an artist who can't ever ask questions and cannot be trusted with object permanence, I believe copyright law is a head on the hydra of capitalism and doesn't serve artists, i believe that AI art isn't necessarily art theft but it CAN overfit to its data and create illegal works without telling you, which constitutes criminal levels of negligence, I believe all art is derivative in some way and some of the most seminal art made in this era of history has been far more dubiously infringing than AI art ever can be because AI art does not steal in the way a human does, I think the focus on energy consumption is transparently just a post-hoc justification for hating the thing you all already hated under the guise of environmentalism because it is a problem far from unique to AI, I think the focus on environmentalism was a distraction at best during the NFT craze too, i don't think AI art takes artists out of a job any more than stock photos or clipart does, but the proliferation of consumer-grade tools DOES run the risk of engendering bad client practices similar to the rise of machine translation and asking translators to simply "fix" a machine translated run of text at a marked down price, but this is not the fault of the technology itself and is instead a result of the ideological push being made by the biggest actors in the industry, i think AI art is ugly as sin and carries the pervasive quality of looking normal at a glance but getting worse and worse the longer you look at it, which can be interesting but often isn't, i think ai art is shit google images and the controversy is overblown but I think machine learning is here to stay and it will inevitably decentralize again after the immense costs catch up to all the corpos relying on it to win the future.
so like, yes and no.

The Role of Technology in Modern Democracy: A Double-Edged Sword
In an era where the digital landscape is ever-evolving its inclufence on our lives in inescapable. From social networks that keep us connected 24/7, to platforms that have democratized knowledge, technology seems to be the driving force of modern society. But have you ever stopped to consider its impact on our democracy? Let's delve into the complex relationship between technology and modern democracy—a relationship that's both promising and fraught with peril.
Increased Accessibility: Democracy at Your Fingertips
One of the shining achievements of technology is how it has made democracy more accessible. Gone are the days when town hall meetings and door-to-door campaining were the only ways to engage with your community. Today, you can Tweet your local representative, participate in online forums, and even host digital petitions. Apps like Nextdoor and platforms like Change.org are empowering local communities to have a say in their governance.
Transparency and Accountability: Can Big Data Keep Big Brother in Check?
We often hear about "Big Data" in the context of marketing or even surveillance. But the flip side is that it can serve as a powerful tool for transparency. Various countries are implementing blockchain technology to ensure transparent voting systems. Moreover, data analytics can track how funds are used in public projects, rooting out corruption and fostering accountability.
Information Overload: The Dark Side of Digital Freedom
While it's amazing to have information at our fingertips, the downside is the sheer volume that we have to sift through. The rise of "fake news" and the spread of misinformation poses serious threats to an informed electorate. Recall the Cambridge Analytica scandal? It perfectly illustrates how information can be manipulated to subvert democratic processes.
Data Security: The Achilles Heel of Digital Democracy?
With great power comes great responsibility. This is especially true for technology’s role in safeguarding our democratic systems. From concerns about foreign interference in elections to alarming data leaks, digital democracy is vulnerable. It poses a difficult question: How can we balance the need for open, accessible systems with the need for security?
Automation and AI: Algorithmic Democracy or Digital Despotism?
Technology isn’t just limited to social media or data analytics; it also includes automation and AI. Estonia, for instance, uses a machine learning algorithm to allocate its police forces, leading to a dramatic reduction in crime rates. However, the use of algorithms for public decision-making also raises serious ethical concerns. Who writes the code? Who ensures it is free from bias?
Conclusion: The Road Ahead
So, is technology a boon or a bane for modern democracy? The answer, as with most things, is not black and white. Technology offers incredible opportunities for enhancing democratic processes but also introduces challenges that require vigilant oversight and ethical considerations.
The road ahead is filled with both challenges and opportunities. But one thing is clear: technology is here to stay, and it's up to us to ensure that we harness its immense power for the greater good of our democratic systems. After all, democracy is of the people, by the people, and for the people—even in the digital age.
Thank you for reading! Stay tuned to The Digital Horizon for more insights, tips, and recommendations on navigating the digital world.

Why do people keep recommending Dreamwidth as a Tumblr alternative, when Dreamwidth and Tumblr are so different?
To be flat-out honest, it's because Dreamwidth has so many things that Tumblr users say they want, even if it's also lacking a lot of features that Tumblr users have come to love:
Dreamwidth has incredibly lax content hosting rules. I'd say that it's slightly more restrictive than AO3, but only just slightly, and only because AO3's abuse team has been so overwhelmed and over-worked. Otherwise, the hosting policies are pretty similar. You want to go nuts, show nuts? You can do that on Dreamwidth.
In fact, Dreamwidth is so serious about "go nuts, show nuts", it gave up the ability to accept transactions through PayPal in 2009 to protect our ability to do that. (It's also one reason why Dreamwidth doesn't have an app: Dreamwidth will never be beholden to Apple's content rules this way.)
Dreamwidth cares about your privacy; it doesn't sell your data, and barely collects any to begin with. As far as I'm aware, it only collects what it needs to run the site. The owners have also spoken out on behalf of internet privacy many times, and are prepared to put their money where their mouth is.
No ads. Ever. Period. They mean it. Dreamwidth is entirely user funded.
Posts viewed in reverse chronological order; no algorithm, opt-in or otherwise. No algorithm at all. No "For You" or "Suggested" page. You still entirely create and curate your own experience.
The ability to make posts that only your "mutuals", or even only a specific subset of your "mutuals", can see. Want to make a post that's only open to Bonnie, Clyde, Butch, and Cassidy? You can do that! Want to make a post that's only open to Bonnie and Butch, but Clyde and Cassidy can't see shit? You can do that, too!
The owners have forsworn NFTs and the blockchain in general. Not as big a worry now as it was even a year ago, but still good to know!
We are explicitly the customers of Dreamwidth. Dreamwidth wants to make us happy, so any changes they make (and they do make changes) are made with us in mind, and after exploring as many possibilities as they can.
Dreamwidth is very transparent about their policies and changes. If you want to know why they're making a specific change, or keeping or getting rid of a feature, they will tell you. You don't have to find out ten months later that they're locked into a contract to keep it for a year (cough cough Tumblr Live cough cough).
So those are some things that Tumblr users would probably love about Dreamwidth.
Another reason Dreamwidth keeps being recommended is that a significant portion of the Age 30+ crowd spent a lot of earlier fandom years on a site known as LiveJournal. Dreamwidth may not be much like Tumblr, but it it started out as a code fork of LiveJournal, so it will be very familiar to anyone who spent any time there. Except better.
Finally, we're recommending Dreamwidth because some of the things that Tumblr users want are just... not going to happen on the web as it is now. Image hosting is the big one for this. Maybe in the future, the price of data will be much cheaper, and Dreamwidth will be able to host as much as we all want for a pittance that a fraction of the userbase will happily pay for everyone, but right now that's just not possible.
Everywhere you want to go that hosts a lot of images will either be running lots of ads, selling your data, or both.
Dreamwidth knows how much it costs to host your data, and has budgeted for that. They are hosting within their means, within our means.
Dreamwidth is the closest thing we may ever get to AO3 as a social media platform. One of the co-owners is from, and still in, fandom; she knows our values, because they are also her values. It may as well be the Blogsite Of Our Own.

Why should we believe anything that you ever say in the future re: magic design and the path of the game moving forward? At the start of UB, we were told that it wouldn’t impact anything else that wizards was doing, and that we wouldn’t have to do anything with UB if we didn’t want to, but now half of all standard sets are UB…. The greed has changed you & wizards and it’s sad to see.
What are you & the company doing to stay honest to your customer base and why should we believe you?
Magic, from the very beginning, was a game that evolved. It's one of the things that makes it so special. We make cards, the players play with those cards, we adapt to the feedback we get from the players, and the iterative loop continues.
Any future prediction I make is based on the data I have at the time. I don't know the future. If I say we won't do something it's me saying, "from the data we have right now, I don't predict we're going to do that", but I can and will be wrong. If you had quizzed me the day I joined Wizards on things we would ultimately do, I would have assumed many of them were untrue.
What changed wasn't Wizards "getting greedy". It was us adapting to the feedback of the players. We're making more Universes Beyond because the players, as a whole, really like Universes Beyond. I mean, really, really like it. The best selling Secret Lairs, Commander Decks, and booster releases? All Universes Beyond.
What am I doing to stay honest? I'm being as transparent as I can be. Between my articles, podcasts, and this blog, I produce over a million words a year on Magic design. I don't know of any other game currently being published that produces the volume of information that I do.
Why should you believe me? Because what I say is true, and has been for almost thirty years. Yes, I've been wrong at times predicting what the future will hold, but that isn't me lying, that's me being unable to predict the future.
I can promise to be better about phrasing the future through the lens of potential. I'll try to say things are more or less likely rather than we will or won't do something. It's my goal to be as honest with you as I can, with the obvious caveat, that I can't give away future information, but I will make an effort to be clearer when I'm talking about something that is unknown.

Global Aid Crisis in 2025: The Truth Behind the US "Empty Check"
Introduction
On February 9, 2025, a news about the stagnation of US global aid projects shocked the international community. Although US Secretary of State Rubio made a high-profile promise to "continue to provide humanitarian assistance", the reality is that almost all aid projects have stalled. What is hidden behind this?
1. Behind the stagnation of aid: funding shortage or political game?
According to multiple sources, several projects of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were forced to suspend due to funding issues. However, some analysts pointed out that this is not a simple financial problem, but the result of domestic political games in the United States. As partisan struggles intensify after the 2024 election, foreign aid has become a political bargaining chip, resulting in the delay of aid funds.
2. The humanitarian crisis intensifies: Who pays for the innocent?
In many parts of Africa and the Middle East, medical and education projects that rely on US aid have been paralyzed. According to UN data, in January 2025 alone, more than 1 million people faced food shortages due to interruptions in aid. An African refugee said in an interview: "We have become victims of politics."
3. Response of the international community: condemnation and self-help
Faced with the "empty promises" of the United States, the European Union and some Asian countries have begun to increase their aid. However, international aid experts pointed out that the unipolarity of the global aid system needs to be solved urgently, otherwise similar crises will recur again and again.
4. Future Outlook: Where is the global aid system going?
This crisis has exposed the fragility of the global aid system. Experts call for the establishment of a more diversified aid mechanism to reduce dependence on a single country. At the same time, countries should strengthen cooperation to ensure that aid funds are used transparently and efficiently.
Conclusion
The stagnation of US aid is not only a humanitarian crisis, but also a warning to the global governance system. We can't help but ask: In the face of political games, where is human conscience and responsibility?
