_Shooting Star
Lara is still frozen in front of her ajar apartment door, mouth slightly agape. The passing night breeze slits through her nightwear since she didn’t bother to change into something presentable. No one was expected tonight and the gang isn't used to seeing her in short tank tops and hot pants, so as long as it isn't the gang, it’s alright. The cold winds seem to caress her naked skin, but for some reason, none of that chill seeps in.
No, her eyes are locked in certain burnt umber ones. She was too concentrated when the bell rang, still calculating equations when she climbed down her just inherited new apartment, trying to find a path through the mess. Many things were bought, hanged and taken care of, but the place was still chaotic, especially because she was also transforming her old Pa’s apartment into a study for astronomy and physics. Well, as much as she could without having government funding and just enough that was still cozy to live in.
The scientist, though, was not expecting a visitor. A Mal visitor. And he does not look happy.
He still wears his diner apron, the red fabric billowing with the wind, but he’s sporting his biker pants and sleeveless gray shirt. It is a weird combination and the fact that he’s holding a delivery bag while looking at her like that makes all those times she felt weird so much more meaningful. His brunette hair is disheveled, probably from taking off his helmet in a hurry. And he had this look… Jaw set in a way that Lara could bet that, in the correct lightning, that prominent scar would show. There was no customer veneer to him today, nor the charisma he would usually sport when talking to her.
There was only an… intensity. His brows were furrowed and mouth set in a dangerous grin. She couldn’t read exactly anger, but maybe frustration? Oh, frustration! The taunt lines of his body exuded that. It wasn’t dangerous, just… very intense.
Did she do something?
Think, Lara, think!
Oh… Well, she did… avoid?... The diner… for two days.
Hey! Lara needed to think, ok? A lot of things were happening and Fernweh was loading a whole set of problems onto her. Especially these… feelings. HOW DOES ONE DEAL WITH IT? The doctor has to think. Sit with these thoughts and really think about them.
But that couldn’t make Mal this mad, could it? It was only two days.
I have no intention of letting you go.
Hm, maybe it could.
Welp, at least they could talk!... She hopes?
“Mal…”, her voice is very soft with wonder, unintentionally cutting him when he’s about to speak. The bag crinkles at his closed first, blood seeping from his fingers as the skin turns pale. Lara can almost hear his teeth grinding against his skull. Ops. “... Sorry. I didn’t ask for any deliv- I mean! I’m happy to see you, I’m just confused? Can we talk… privately? I think I left my card upstairs. ”, her face flushes, her pulse spikes so much that she worries if a heart attack is on the way. He must find something in her expression that makes him soften. She’s trying to give him an excuse to get upstairs to a private conversation. There’s no hesitation when the waiter steps forward. He’s done waiting. No excuses tonight.
“The delivery was already paid on your behalf, Charmer. Looks like your sweetest friend was worried that you vanished from the world of the living.”, he shadows her steps and, as Lara looks over her shoulder, shivers welcome her. “But I can take these up for you. After all, you’re not very good at holding onto things.”
Lara cocks her head his way, raising her brows. He’s repeating what he told her at the lake, that fateful night. Her waiter loves to recall his own sentences, doesn’t he? She chuckles slightly at that. It was a good one, after all. Lara can feel her marked left hand warm up even without his touch. She wonders what kind of magic he suffused in it, connecting them.
The door behind them is closed with a click of finality, but her mind couldn’t be giving less fucks about that.
“Don’t mind the mess, I’m still decorating and making it usable for work.”, she exhales. It has been a tiring process, especially with her mind being the mess it has been these last few days. Her heart was beating so fast. The butterflies in her stomach were enraged. MalinmyapartmentMalinmyapartment.
It takes her back to these last days. Is it what it means to care for someone romantically? Lara can say she likes likes him, but can she believe she loves him? That’s not something she can answer, but it’s undeniable how the doctor craves time with the waiter, how she loves hearing his voice or seeing him working on his bike. True, she still knows very little about him, but it makes her happy that Mal can smile, really meaning it, when they talk. When they hang out together… WHY DOES THAT MAKES HER HEART BEAT SO FAST? She’s already aware of it, alright? No need for this!
And the shivers? How does his voice seem to caress her neck whenever he speaks with her? It’s not something she can keep giving excuses for. No, it’s not the cold weather. It’s not the electromagnetic fields.
She can’t keep staring at his hands or lips anymore, it’s humiliating.
The climbing is silent, broken only by their steps and Lara’s own uncontrollable heartbeat. She feels like a rabbit, but doesn't dwell on it. Talking with him about the thoughts of these last few days is way more important now, and Lara knows it. There’s one doubt in her mind, though, that she has to voice. “Is this place safe to talk?”
Her voice sounds delicate as Mal crosses the threshold of her apartment, absorbing every detail as if he needed to burn it in his memory. The walls further from the windows sport midnight blue wallpapers filled with charting in silver and gold. The kitchen aisle was reformed and thousands of extra-small tiles that seemed to form a blue and green nebula were lightened by soft orange lamps.
The old windows were removed and now wall-sized ones showed the verdant horizon of Fernweh. Heavy gray curtains could be used if Lara needed more privacy. Her trusty telescope was set in one of the windows overlooking the more wild side of the town.
Adjacent to it, there was a whole set of modern lab equipment that Lara was still unpacking, a seemingly futuristic laboratory of calculators, monitors and sensors. Fairy lights that looked like twinkling stars were hung in perfect cuts and sizes.
The whole place seemed like either a sci-fi lab or an old astronomer’s tower.
“I took care of it, you don’t need to worry tonight, Charmer.”, his voice resonates against the walls in a way that makes her tremble. Why? Was it the husky tone? Was the fact that Lara might feel a feathering touch at her arm?
For some reason, the pressure of tonight seems way out of scale from their normal encounters. It was charged, almost short circuiting. Not insulated as it would usually be. Lara turns to her visitor. Her waiter. Her… Well.
Mal threw his unfastened apron over his shoulder. Their eyes meet and all words leave her. His eyes were almost crimson against the light. Cocking his head, Mal still has that coiled bearing, but his face transmits a very different message as she feels his electrifying focus pressed against her from head to toe. Deliberate. Slow.
Oh gods, did she have any medicine for blood pressure?
“Not tonight, huh? Did you tape the supernatural bugs in here? Well, no matter. This is good, I want to talk…”, she ever so softly takes his diner bag from his hands, trying to break eye contact. Key word trying. Focus, Lara!, “Sit, please? I’ll brew something for us. Hopefully I won’t mess up, I have no idea what’s inside these.”, Lara shut up. She brings the bag to the aisle, smelling the perfectly made parfait. She can’t wait to dig in the ripe strawberries, but this is more important.
“There’s a certain type of drink that I want to taste, Lara. I’m sure that one, you have in here.”, his flirting catches Lara a bit off guard, but she breathes in, heart skipping once more. Her vision is almost blurry from her nerves and she knows she must be a glowing red alert, but she chuckles.
“I wouldn’t put so much trust in it if I were you.”, at that, Lara brings her visitor a cup of hot chamomile tea with milk and honey. As the waiter reaches for his cup, his left hand snakes and grabs the scientist’s left one, warmth suffusing against her palm. She jolts, balancing her tea without spilling it.
“Looks like you’re learning to hold things better, Lara.”, he pulls her closer, eyes dead set on hers. Their knees bump into each other softly. “Why don’t you sit, Charmer? You’re home.”, Mal says, in a very honeyed and hushed voice.
She can’t focus like that, but she sits beside him, focusing on the half finished planetarium close to her telescope. Lara sips her tea, tilting her head towards him once he starts to test the give of her fingers. It’s weird to have this… Intimate moments with someone, but not a bad weird. She softly smiles at that. Something that always makes him stop staring so intently.
“I’m trying to make it homey, although I miss the lab… But this is not why I wanted to talk.”
“I… hm, first, I’m sorry for not showing up at the diner. Before you said something enigmatic about it, I go there mostly for you, and we both know that.”, she says, looking inside her teacup. Mal will wait for her to speak, she knows that, but still, it is hard to maintain eye contact. And those words need to be said. Lara can’t afford to be hypnotized now. “So, sorry, I needed to think. I never had to deal with this before… And second, well…”, the astrophysicist trails off, eyes automatically burrowing into Mal’s crimson ones. She shudders a breath, but holds eye contact. It is most important. “What I was thinking about was… you.”
That soft expression she spotted other times was back. A fragile hope. Eye contact is broken, but not by her, this time. He seems to tense even more, if that’s possible. With deceptive strength, he pulls her even closer. The scientist reeds the unanswered question, their sides merging with proximity as if Mal couldn’t fathom not being this close with her.
Then, his head snaps into attention until he’s hovering over her, hands still locked in that firm grip and teacup forgotten in the coffee table. Somehow, even her cup is not in her hands anymore.
Her eyes scrutinize him, stopping at his lips, and she swallows. He’s biting the bottom one, on the brink of losing control over his calm. His face exudes something consuming, devouring.
Lara takes a deep breath and searches the monitors on the walls for some reading that can distract her, so the rest can be said.
“Wait, don’t speak. Sorry, it’s just that… I need to put these into words, and I’m terrible at that. But I think I might… Well…”, he seems to approach their faces, a ground out intent in his eyes. Their noses are almost touching, which makes it impossible for Lara to try to distract herself. Not when he’s this close, warm breath touching her lips. “I don’t ‘think’, I know that I do like you. I don’t know about love, but whatever we have now? It’s nice…”, the admission leaves a little too fast, as if she was desperate to breathe. “Fernweh hasn’t been the best place to be since I came back, but I am glad to have come and met you.”, the doctor manages to push out her remaining words, unable to look anywhere else but him.
He smells like cinnamon, sweet and warm. So warm… Her eyes trail down, locking on his indulgent smile.
“And what do we have, Lara? What is this?”, he says, amused, right hand starts a tentative trail on the right side of her rib cage. Lara doesn’t remember how her hand ended up on his chest, feeling the expanse of muscle beneath his shirt, softly tracing his rib cage, counting bones unintentionally.
Such a thin layer separating them. Such a thin layer of air doing the same.
Her voice is breathless, but she manages to squeeze out some words. “I don’t know… But I want to find out.”
The final distance is cut mostly by Mal, but also by a soft pull from her right hand and the eagerness of her eyes when she looks at him like that.
As if he was one of the stars she’s so passionate about.
There’s almost no control over the ferocity of his kiss, sending shivers all over her skin, but that is barely registered as Lara is drunk on the moment. He is still holding her left hand in an unrelenting grip, while his other hand tries to settle her in place so she doesn’t climb on his lap as she wished to do subconsciously. That kiss will leave a mark. She swallows the sweetness of his mouth with abandon, mind feeble. All thoughts are drowned in a fog. A haze of heat she doesn’t understand, but doesn’t shy away either.
When Lara separates to breathe in, she can feel his smile at her soft gasps for air. A husky chuckle leaves him.
She was never kissed like that. Her face is flush, but her eyes are still set on the prize. Mal’s eyes are a deep crimson and there’s nothing in this world that could make Lara move from that place right now.
Is this the feeling of being hit by a supernova?
The woman lets the intrusive thoughts win and oh-ever-so-softly nips at his lower lip. That small action changes something in his fragile veneer of control. An almost death grip on the nape of her neck makes their lips join again with violence, pulling out a decadent moan from her throat. How can two bodies be even closer than they are now? He maneuvers her, setting a trail of kisses, sucks and nips down said throat, drinking her sensitiveness as more soft moans leave his scientist’s lips. Lara feels a bite at the junction of her neck and shoulder and that wakes her from her haze. The sensation that climbs down her lower belly makes her set her thighs together. Wide eyed and heavily flushed, the doctor stares at Mal’s almost too smug smile. “It looks like you learned your lesson well, Charmer.”
She can’t speak. Her heart is beating too fast. There’s too much blood rushing through her head. The doctor stands up suddenly, breathing in with desperation. Mal watches her, amused, even if he’s still holding her left hand in that dead-lock grip.
Ever so slightly, she eases their hold until he lets go. The smugness is exchanged by a dark expression as Lara grabs the teacups and takes them to the kitchen aisle. I can't think. I can't think! Lara you can't just attack a guy like that!
The scientist almost flees, but the waiter doesn’t wait for her to return. He gets up and remains just some steps behind her, merging their personal spaces. He doesn’t want any more distance between them. There was already enough of that for a lifetime. She's still trying to recover her breathing when he locks her between him and the aisle, intentionally so close that she doesn't have room to move. Tea cups again already out of her hands.
“Lara, look at me.”, he commands, impatient for the first time since they started this. Her eyes are unerringly drawn to his, locking in again. As it was always meant to be.
“Mal, I’m… I’m sorry! I should’ve asked first, not just…”
He has to bite down his bottom lip to avoid laughing. Of course that’s what she’s actually worried about. He’s unable to hide his smile when again, she’s hypnotized by his lips. “We can repeat that as many times as you want…”, he murmurs ever so softly. Approaching his lips to her ear, he gives her a hushed breath. “... Even more. I want all of you, Lara.”
At that, Lara bites down her bottom lip and, in a practiced movement, she sits on the aisle, but it’s Mal that grabs her face and takes her breath away, making her hold onto him as if he was the only thing in this world that could set her free.  oc from @lacunafiction

Here's a poll for a character who gets some of the most varied and perhaps divisive adaptations across Sherlock media, despite only appearing in the original canon stories once, in A Scandal in Bohemia. Whether she's someone who's gained his respect, an ex, an enemy or a friend, portrayals of Irene Adler have run the gamut and The Woman continues to capture the imagination of folks producing Sherlock adaptations any time she appears.
Please reblog for a larger sample size! :) I'm curious especially if there's been any book adaptations that have been well done.

I want to love you (more than I love you)
***spoilers***
I was pretty sure I was the ideal audience for The Lost City. And - TLDR - I did really enjoy it the first time I saw it but have struggled to get through it on the second time of viewing, a year later. (WHY?)
Still loved the opening though - the setting and the scrubbing out.
Tumblr media
First - why am I the ideal audience?
Do I love Romancing the Stone? Back in the day, wholeheartedly. These days? Probably, definitely, undeniably not ALL of it. Hasn't ALL aged very well, has it? But Kathleen Turner's Joan Wilder and the journey/s she goes on, particularly the emotional one? YES PLEASE.
Sandra Bullock is Loretta Sage who is a sort of Joan Wilder for the 2020s. Both are super successful romance novelists, but LS leans academic and tough, plus also - grieving - whereas JW is ALL Mills and Boon, soft, longing for love, cat-lady-in-training material. Both end up on a treasure quest because someone took their books a bit too seriously (although, sometimes having your books taken seriously can be a good thing, per this lovely clip via YouTube, below).
youtube
Do I love Lara Croft? Not as much as I feel I should. Shout-out to Brad Pitt's character cameo (I think it's a cameo?) as a guy who surely would be at home in either of those movies IMO.
Tumblr media
Do I love Indiana Jones? Is the Pope a major figure in the Roman Catholic church? Does Indy have a fraught relationship with snakes?
youtube
See - makes sense of the snakes, right (and I can 100% imagine the writers being like FINALLY I have chance to question the snake logic!)
Big shout-out to Daniel Radcliffe who for me was the absolute and slightly unexpected highlight of this movie, especially on the second run at it, and who could have credibly villained up in any of the previously mentioned flicks, or, another obvious inspo - James Bond.
Tumblr media
Closer to home - am I a big fan of Sandra Bullock?
Yes, really am, and I think my favourite of her movies remains 1995's While You Were Sleeping though I accept that the dumb McGuffin that gets the plot going is now considered ethically ICK (and, it was never, as such, a move we were supposed to approve of?)
But come on - is this guy... leaning? Still (to me) adorable.
youtube
BTW had absolutely not realised how Proto-Sopranos the landlord guy is (can't remember - is that his role/relationship to the SB character? - can't quite summon the energy to go and find out). And, indeed, having looked up the actor, he was considered for Tony Soprano when that series was created a few years later (greenlit 1997 and on screens from, I think, 1999) and played a small role in S1.
I did really enjoy the Channing Tatum character, though he was playing, of course, a zillion times softer than in my current favourite of his movies. No, not Magic Mike. Not even Step Up* (which I liked).
[*There's a moment later on in The Lost City where they dance and - wow - it's really something to see someone on screen who can REALLY move. SB perhaps not so much, but CT? Fluid to the max.]
For reasons that probably speak to some personality deficiency or psychosis, my fave CT movie is 2013's White House Down, naturally:
Tumblr media
So - the issue? The out-of-water environment was GREAT. The constant references to ridiculous treasure hunt / action adventure movies also really worked for me. I think big picture the movie stands or falls on how much the viewer can believe there's a soft, worthwhile person under the surface of SB's dismissive, superior veneer and whether it's fun to watch Person In Position of Power Being Mean to Lovely Softer Person Who For No Obvious Reason Adores Them.
Turns out that I can go with that only once.
youtube
Perhaps 1st time through I'm expecting the Mean Person to get over themselves faster. On a second viewing, my patience is lower and I want her to behave better, faster. No, I don't think that being scared of moving on or commitment or fresh heartbreak is a good excuse.
It's also a close revival of The Proposal - except that CT is all sweetness, no snark while RR is always at least a little bit of a blend.
I enjoyed The Proposal - but I didn't entirely enjoy it. (And again, there's some secondary material that hopefully wouldn't make the cut if it was being made now and that would be frankly unregretted.)
PS Thought RR's snark was on point with his birthday message to SB last year - how very on brand to reshare this Gorgeous Bodies image while simultaneously joking about how industry standards have changed AND, I think, by doing this publicly, jokily, reaffirming the idea that this was one of the movies With Nothing To Hide.

March 13th, 2024
4:02 PM Sat in Starbucks (shocker). Sandwich in my bag, hot chocolate (from home, ironically) in my belly. Emotionally draining day for reasons that I can't speak into the void, but Korean waits for no one! Currently studying some irregular verb conjugations, while people-watching outside. I saw some people sat on the university sign. They looked like they had just finished a run. I like to run too. I wish they knew that. I could tell them "hey, I like to run" and they'd said "cool, me too" and id say "want to run at a similar pace to the same meaningless bench and back sometime?" and they'd say "cool". I could make running friends.
I am proud of myself for going to the gym this morning - but I am craving a bit more. Since I retired from varsity athletics I've taken a break from being active consistently, under the guise of "I dont need to prove myself anymore" and "Im re-buildling my relationship with sport". But I still crave more.
More adventure, the gravel roads I once roamed. Truth is, I've been scared to ride into Gatneau park from Ottawa. Too nervous. Yet I say I want to bike across Africa, across the world. For the last several years it has stopped me. How am I supposed to be the metaphorical lovechild of James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Lara Croft if I can't even control my nerves enough to adventure across the boarder? Right then, as my dad would say "book your ideas up". Enough staring at the roads on google maps, studying their ever nuance. Enough checking other peoples rides on Strava and wallowing in self pity.
I am the only thing getting in my way. The city makes me nervous, and I crave the comfort of the quiet roads I know. I used to explore those on my own, trying out new routes. Why is this any different? I guess it's a little different knowing I'll see other people. Being lost on your own is one thing, but being lost with hundreds of other cyclists around you is another. Okay - it's decided. I will go this weekend. I will get up nice and early and try it out. Im scared, but now I've put this thought into the void; I can't back out because I can't let the void down! I just have to imagine that David Beckham is reading this. If David Beckham thinks I am going on a bike ride - then I have to go. I can't back out knowing David Beckham has a perception of me. Backing down is not the Mancinaun way! Thank you for listening, void. From this adventure, you might get a more interesting blog post. Right then—now that that's sorted—I have to go and do some Korean. I don't want to let down Jamie! Speaking of, she loves soccer. "Manchester?! Do you know Jesse Lingard?" she says with glee. Of course! I proclaim. He plays in Korean now!" We spoke for a third of the lesson. I booked five more lessons.

The Basics of Kemetic Philosophy (without the appropriated shit from Judaism)
I'm starting a series on Kemetic philosophy because a lot of my readings on it have included things like Kabbalah (Kabala, Kabbala, Qabala, etc.) which is directly appropriated from Judaism, and definitely would not have been included in ancient Kemetic philosophy.
This series relies heavily on the following books/independent publications (this continues to be updated as the series continues):
The Instruction of Ptah-Hotep and the Instruction of Ka'Gemni: The Oldest Books in the World translated by John Murray
Teachings of Ptahhotep
Maat: The 11 Laws of God by Ra Un Nefer Amen (somewhat, this book literally has the Kabbalistic tree of life on its' cover so I don't take a lot from it--it's really just a good jumping-off point because it covers so much)
Maat: The Moral Idea in Ancient Egypt by Maulana Karenga
The Literature of Ancient Egypt: An Anthology of Stories, Instructions, and Poetry edited with an introduction by William Kelly Simpson. Authors include Robert K. Ritner, Vincent A. Tobin, and Edward F. Wente.
I Am Because We Are: Readings in Africana Philosophy by Fred Lee Hord, Mzee Lasana Okpara, and Johnathan Scott Lee.
Ancient Egyptian Literature: Volume I: The Old and Middle Kingdoms by Miriam Lichtheim (2006 Edition)
Current Research in Egyptology 2009: Proceedings of the Tenth Annual Symposium by Judith Corbelli, Daniel Baotright, and Claire Malleson
Old Kingdom, New Perspectives: Egyptian Art and Archaeology 2750-2150 BC by Nigel Strudwick and Helen Strudwick
Current Research in Egyptology 2010: Proceedings of the Eleventh Annual Symposium by Maarten Horn, Joost Kramer, Daniel Soliman, Nico Staring, Carina van den Hoven, and Lara Weiss
Current Research in Egyptology 2016: Proceedings of the Seventeenth Annual Symposium by Julia M. Chyla, Joanna Dêbowska-Ludwin, Karolina Rosińska-Balik, and Carl Walsh
Mathematics in Ancient Egypt: A Contextual History by Annette Imhausen
The Instruction of Amenemope: A Critical Edition and Commentary by James Roger Black
"The ancient Egyptian concept of Maat: Reflections on social justice and natural order" by R. James Ferguson
The Mind of Ancient Egypt: History and Meaning in the Time of the Pharaohs by Jan Assmann
Transformations of the Inner Self in Ancient Religions by Jan Assmann and Guy G. Stroumsa
Of God and Gods: Egypt, Israel, and the Rise of Monotheism by Jan Assmann
Death and Salvation in Ancient Egypt by Jan Assmann
Cultural Memory and Early Civilization: Writing, Remembrance, and Political Imagination by Jan Assmann
From Akhenaten to Moses: Ancient Egypt and Religious Change by Jan Assmann
Book of the Dead: Becoming God in Ancient Egypt edited by Foy Scalf with new object photography by Kevin Bryce Lowry
It also relies on the following journal articles/book chapters:
"A Modern Look at Ancient Wisdom: The Instruction of Ptahhotep Revisited" by Carole R. Fontaine in The Biblical Archaeologist Volume 44, No. 3
"The Teaching of Ptahhotep: The London Versions" by Alice Heyne in Current Research in Egyptology 2006: Proceedings of the Seventh Annual Symposium

Day 7: Proposal
Since this marks one week, this is going to be extra long!
"Goodbye love," Draco says as he leaves Grimmauld Place a little late.
Harry was dressing when he left him in the room, he casts a tempus charm just outside the door. It's almost noon, Salazar knew why Harry didn't even bat an eyelid at his late morning.
He apparates to the Maya Magal in London, it's apparantly the best place to get engagement rings and both Pansy and Hermione vouch for it.
A handsomely dressed woman, probably Draco's age, greets him at the door and takes him inside.
"What would you be looking for today, sir?" she asks politely.
"Engagement rings, thank you."
"Do you have any choice or maybe a reference picture?"
"No, just something light and simple would do. He doesn't like heavy jewels or jewels for that matter." Draco says, belatedly realising that he used the masculine pronoun instead of the neutral one, Hermione had told him that Muggles didn't always see eye to eye with same gender relationships like Wizards and Witched did.
But the lady doesn't even hesitate before giving him a smile and leading him towards the middle of the store. She starts showing him a myriad of rings- all of them elegant and classy with intricate designs but nothing that would suit Harry.
After almost four hours of looking at almost each and every ring in the shop, he picks a simple band which a mixture of platinum and gold with tiny diamonds adorning it's edges. He immediately knows that this is it.
The lady smiles at him again, not a single sign in her face saying that she is frustrated or annoyed that Draco took such a long time.
"Would you like to engrave something on the inside?"
"Yes sure." Draco replies, he instantly knows what he wants. In the end, the lady- Lara tells him to come back in two hours for the ring to be ready and he thanks her and gets going.
A tempus charm shows him that he has about three hours to get home before Harry starts to suspect anything and that's plenty of time. He apparates to the cementry in Godric's hollow.
"Hello," he greets James and Lily as he sits down beside their grave on the ground, "So I wanted to ask you for Harry's hand. I know it's an ancient practice and well, you are dead but I want to do this right. I was raised this way and I'm rambling."
He takes a moment conjure some flowers before he starts talking again, "So I want to marry your son. Why should he marry me? I don't know that. Merlin, I don't even know why he loves me. Me, who is an angry arsehole to everyone and who never smiles. Weasley's definition not mine, just so you know. I can tell you why I love him though? Maybe that will be enough to convince you both. Harry, he has always been my guiding star. I don't know how but even in school when we were at each other's throats, he had been someone constant, someone always there. No matter in what way, just there. And afterwards, the war where well you know things happened and I was so bloody naive but he was there as well. He had been my only hope back then, that Harry might be able to save all of his from the doom which was Vol-voldemort. And he did, he even initiated the house unity in Eighth year and then we got seperated because of our careers and look at us now. Both working at the Ministry and even our departments are connected, somewhat. I'm an Unspeakable, you see. You would know that Harry is Head Auror but not about me. I don't know when that star, that hope became my everything. Slowly, but consistently. We grew closer and I can't imagine a day without him anymore. At the end of the day, I need to be around him else I can't fall asleep.
It's been almost twelve years since the war but some scars remain. I'm really hoping that you would look past those and forgive me and accept me as your son's husband-if he says yes that is. Maybe this is all in vain, Harry might just say no and that will be that. But I'm trying not to focus on the negatives right now. Thank you for your sacrifices and thank you so much for giving this world such a kind hearted, selfless person. Thank you for my Harry." He finishes at last, his eyes are slightly tinging but that's alright. No one's here to see him like this anyways.
He talks to them somemore, about everything about him and Harry and how much he loves him and how he would never let Harry feel like he did throughout his childhood and how he plans on proposing Harry on the anniversary of their tenth year together.
Its about 6pm when he leaves the graveyard and goes to pick up the ring.
.........
As soon as Harry hears Draco call out his goodbye, he takes out his notepad from under the socks in the drawer and checks everything he needs to do in order for everything to be perfect tomorrow.
Pick up ring
Ask the parents
Check in with Hermione and Pansy
Order the flowers
He makes goes to the Wizarding Jewelry Place first and asks for the ring.
"Yes, Mr. Potter. The ring is ready and just how you asked it to be. I'll bring it right out," the old man says, who Harry got to know was the owner of the shop from Pansy.
He comes out after several moments and in his hands is a small jewelry box, with intricate golden work over the black satin. The man opens the box and shows Harry the ring, it's perfect with its platinum and gold band and a heavy diamond in the middle of it, he checks the inside and yes, the inscription is just how he had wanted it to be.
He thanks the man and hurries to Wiltshire after making his payment.
He apparates just outside of the Manor gates, after all these years it's fairly easy to enter. The Manor has transformed drastically, and Narcissa and surprisingly, Lucius's warm welcome behaviour had helped immensely.
He had been shocked when he met Lucius as Draco's boyfriend for the first time since the war, it had been after two years of dating Draco and he had been invited over. Gone was the bigoted, slimy bastard he knew, this Lucius was still as much of an arsehole but not the same one. They were not friendly exactly, but he liked to think that he and Lucius got along nowadays. Well it's almost been eight years so he guessed with time anything was possible.
The gates opens to him without any sort of hindrance. Just as he was going to knock on the door, Mipsy opens it and pokes her head out.
"Mipsy is here to greet Harry Potter. Who does Harry Potter like to meet? Master Draco isn't here today."
"Yes, Mipsy I'm aware that Draco isn't here. I'm here to meet Lucius and Narcissa actually." He explains, Mipsy nods her head and vanishes with a small pop, only to return twenty seconds later, and asking Harry to follow her to the parlor.
"Harry, dear. What do we owe this pleasure to?" Narcissa asks as he enters the room.
"Sure you haven't lost your way here? Draco doesn't live here any longer." Lucius says at the same time.
"Yes, Lucius I haven't lost my way and I know Draco doesn't live here any longer, since you know, he lives with me now," he retorts back- Merlin it's weird enough calling Lucius by his name in his head, it's weirder when he says it out loud. "I actually wanted to ask for something."
"See Cissa, I told you he had ulterior motives after all," Lucius says as he looks over Harry suspiciously.
"Oh Lucius, why don't we hear out the young man before you start with all your nonsense." Narcissa says and she waves her hand towards Harry in a way to tell him to continue.
"I want to ask for Draco's hand in marriage." Harry blurts out, the silence that follows is deafening. He looks from Malfoy to the other, both of them seem to be in an intense conversation which is being spoken through their eyes.
It's Lucius who breaks the silence at last, "Why do you want to marry our son? Why should we allow you?"
"Because I love him, I know it can't be as simple as that but that's the gist of it. I love your son with my whole being. I can't imagine a day where I can't see his face or without his insults which have somehow become a constant as well. I tried to find the many reasons for which I should deserve to marry him, I can't find one. But I want to, I want to be deserved enough to marry Draco Malfoy. I want to make him happy for the rest of his life and I want to do this right for once, that's why here I'm asking permission for his hand because even though it doesn't matter nowadays. Draco loves tradition and for him, this is of great significance and I want everything to be right this time." Harry finishes and when he looks over at them, because he had said most of that looking at the carpet, Narcissa's eyes a bit glassy and Lucius who never shows emotion, is actually beaming at him.
"Very well then, Harry. You have both our permission to marry our son and we both would be honoured to welcome you into the Malfoy family. I...I might have been wrong about you afterall." Lucius says and coming from him it's high praise. He is glad both of them and he tells them so and both of them smile fondly at him. They make him stay for tea and afterwards wishes him luck as he floos to Diagon Alley to meet Hermione and Pansy at the new cafe.
"So you got the parents blessings then?" Pansy asks as she takes a sip of her firewhiskey mixed coffee.
"Yup"
"And you have the ring?" Hermione questions as she sets down her wine glass. Seriously is this a cafe or a pub?
"Right here!" He shows them the ring and they coo over it for a minute. "Is this place even a cafe or is that just for the name?"
"It's a cafe and bar, of sorts. They provide a mixture of normal drinks but add alcohol to it. You should try the vodka and peach drink. It's absolutely perfect." Pansy answers as she calls over a waiter.
"No thank you, Pans. I have to go back to my boyfriend who shouldn't even suspect that I have been anywhere but work today. Do you have anything non-alcoholic?" He directs the last question to the waiter who has come.
"Yes, right about everything can be non-alcoholic or purely alcoholic as well. The mixtures are just out speciality."
"Oh then....you know what give me a vodka and peach drink. I deserve it after spending an entire afternoon with two Malfoys." Harry says. The waiter suppresses his amusement and goes to get his order.
Pansy and Hermione snicker at him, "Oh shut it. As if you both wouldn't do the exact same."
They are still chuckling as he discusses the details of the date he had set up for tomorrow. Nowhere public because neither of them liked that, so instead he had picked up a picnic spot for tomorrow night. It would be great fun to propose in the middle of night with only the moons and stars providing them light.
Pansy and Hermione were incharge of setting everything up and they would also be telling Draco that it was a joint anniversary gift to them and they had informed Harry as well. It was the perfect ploy and no one would suspect a thing.
"Alright, the two of you. Enjoy your night, go home safely. I need to get going if I want to make it home before him." Harry says as he gets up and kisses both their cheeks one by one.
"Ron and Blaise will be here shortly so you need not worry about it, darling. We'll be alright on our own till then." Hermione says back and Pansy adds,"Draco never comes home early so you needn't worry about it."
Seriously these two are in so much sync that it terrifies him at times.
He steps out of the cafe and on a impromptu decision apparates to Godric's hollow instead.
...
Draco apparates directly inside the Manor Gates after picking up the ring.
Tabota greets him and tells him that his parents are in the third floor parlor. He makes his way quickly-he doesn't have much time left, he needs to be quick now.
"Hello, love. What a pleasant surprise!" Mother says as he enters.
"Hello Mother," he says and then nods towards his father, "Father,"
"Actually I'm in a bit of a hurry right now. I wanted the Malfoy signet ring." Draco says, getting to the point quickly.
"But I can see you wearing yours, son." Father says.
"Yes I know. I'm- I'm proposing Harry tomorrow." He announces and he is confused by their identical expressions of surprise and then repressed mirth. He didn't except that.
"Is that so?" Father says as he tilts his head, "Very well then, I'll go get it." He leaves the room and Draco is left with his Mother.
"I'm so happy for you, my darling." She says as she comes closer and hugs him.
"Well, I hope he says yes, else..." Draco replies as he hugs her back.
"Oh I'm sure he won't." Father replies as he enters the room. That was surprisingly quick.
"Here you go, son. I'm sure Harry would be quite delighted." He hands Draco the ring and engulfs him in a rare hug as well. Draco can't believe it, his parents approve. Not that he didn't know that, but it's different to know that so explicitly.
"Thank you. I need to get going now. Goodbye." Draco says, his parents murmur their byes and he apparates directly to Grimmauld Place.
Harry's yet to be home, so he decides to hide his ring and take a long bath.
Tomorrow is going to be perfect!
@cupofsquirrelfan hope you like this!

𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐇𝐘
for a hopeless romantic, elijah james ullman always found the beauty in everything. his parents had met when they were both studying for medicine, fell in love, and excelled in their medical fields. their love story was one for the books. this was of course many centuries ago.
ej loved hearing about their love story, and he loved that they were still ambitious and love the work that they did, and he was the product of their love.
elijah james ullman was born into phoenix, just like his dad blaise. it was something that he always fear, realizing that when he died, a new version of himself would be born and his old self would be lost forever.
growing up, ej was one who was very in touch with his emotions. he was a vibrant child, who was very imaginative, but also sensitive. his parents worried though that their son would be taken advantage of with all his characteristics he showed.
ej was a daydreamer, and unrealistic paths ended up becoming something he dealt with a lot. becoming an older brother helped with realizing he had to become more realistic, that eventually he became very self-critical with things he did.
even with all that, being a phoenix was something he was good at. controlling his abilities, learning new ones. but one thing he didn't want was the memories that would one day come crashing in. he was afraid of the decisions he might have done in his past life. or maybe it was so good, he'd be sad of what he had lost.
as he got older, he decided that he wanted to follow in his parents footsteps, doctors, what was new? so he went to college for it, and took all the years for him to finally get his medical license.
for a long time he debated whether he wanted to be a brain surgeon like his father or a heart surgeon like his mother, but he discovered that he was good with kids. so he decided paeds was what he'd do. helping children of all kinds.
now that he was reaching his first half century, he finds himself wanting some change. maybe he's been wanting to find love like his parents, or maybe he feels being a doctor isn't for him. he's still figuring it out.

Note
I really liked hearing your thoughts on what jobs the characters would have in your Skins: Redux post. What job do you see the Gen Two cast as having in adulthood? Personally, I think Freddie would be a good caregiver (like in a nursing home or something similar), since he’s very compassionate and has such a good relationship with his grandfather.
Generation 2
Effy: We know Effy goes to University and studies Maths.  I think Effy would have made a good bartender or cryptographer/codebreaker. Pandora says that she should be a wildlife photographer, which also makes sense to me.
Katie: I see Katie as marrying quite young to someone very wealthy, who appreciates and loves her and makes her feel like she’s perfect.  I imagine she’d dress up and attend lots of fancy fundraising parties and maybe be part of charitable organizations.  She would be the CEO of a very small company and wear leopard print power suits every day.  She’d adopt some lovely children and have the family she’s always wanted, and even though it’s not the perfect she thought she wanted, it’s perfect for her.  And Auntie Emily and Auntie Naomi will come over to babysit her children lots.  And Katie will have to yell “LANGUAGE” at James because he’s rather foul-mouthed around the kids and she doesn’t want them picking up bad habits.
Emily and Naomi: Emily and Naomi would go traveling after Roundview and neither of them would ever have anything bad happen to them, and then they’d go to university together and Naomi would be all “social justice” and Emily would be all “that’s my girlfriend *head in hands*”. I think Naomi would work for a non-profit that she really believes in, and maybe run for political office at some point in the future. I think Emily would become a therapist because she’s all about encouraging people to be their best and to be brave and address their problems (as with JJ and with Naomi).
JJ:  I think JJ would probably work in a astrophysics lab or something similar, building rockets.  I think JJ needs someone like him to be happy, so I’d want him to dump Lara and her baby and find someone nice who works at his lab and understands all of his quirks and intricacies and thinks that they’re beautiful.  And who will watch all the seasons of Star Trek with him.
Cook: Cook would serve his time in jail and turn his life around, and maybe take custody of his brother.  Hopefully he’d find a nice girl who doesn’t look too much like Effy. I don't know what I think he'd do for work; maybe he'd take over Fishponds from his Uncle Keith?
Thomas:  Pandora says that Thomas should be one of those musicians who helps rehabilitate war veterans, and I like that.  I also think that perhaps he could be a good diplomat, since he’s kind and caring and managed to broker peace with Johnny White's gang. And also because he apparently went to Harvard.
Pandora:  Pandora goes to Harvard with Thomas to study History.  I think she’d enjoy it there, but I don’t know if she’d be able to get past the idea that she’s useless, and I have a feeling she would drop out.  Pandora's career test came back with the suggestion that she should be a careers advisor and since she’s similar to Josie I think that could actually work out really well for her.
