The absence of the superego psychological structure in JSA bronze age comics, an observation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One thing that makes reading the JSA revival run from 1976 such an interesting experience is just how much of their inner thoughts they are willing to share with each other. The members of this team will express the most intense feelings of despair, anger and every other emotion without thinking twice, it makes for a very intense reading experience. These people are on the edge and they will let you know about their intrusive thoughts, deep feelings and desires, the drama is always through the roof, and I didn't even include Power Girl's exchanges with Superman and Wildcat (I'm saving these for another post)
In Freudian psychology we have:
(...) the id is the impulsive part of your personality that is driven by pleasure and repulsed by pain, the superego is the judgmental and morally correct part of your personality, and the ego is the conscious part of your personality that mediates between the id and the superego and makes decisions.
And I can only think of the challenge the JSA team of this time would present for these definitions, because they seem unburdened by the superego aspect of their mind, just saying what their id demands, particularly when it comes to sharing their feelings. And that is not to say these characters don't have interesting inner lives, it's just that they're very transparent about their feelings and it's absolutely appealing to witness such a dynamic
This particular style of writing reminds me of what Chris Claremont was also doing with the Uncanny X-Men at Marvel (All-Star Comics revival and Claremont's X-Men were published only 6 months apart), which might just be an example of how the writing trends of superhero comic books were changing with the times. The difference is: the X-men heroes were younger and less experienced while the JSA characters are jaded, they share a common history of decades with each other and their foes, this leaves a lot of room for drama and conflict (not to put these books against each other they're just different and I love both). Honestly I'm a melodrama fan, I have an appreciation for this soap opera style of comic book narrative and I'm glad there's so much good material to get into. There's a reason why the JSA characters are still popular to this day

Decided to draw Pre Crisis Dick Grayson and Jay Todd.. I did this in August last year thought I'd share it now, I happen to be quite fond of these characters as well as the pre crisis era as a whole, this is also very much a love letter to Gerry Conways work with the character

Hello! I've been a fan of Hank since I was a kid, primarily owing to his portrayal in the 90s cartoon. With the airing of X-Men '97, I've been reminded of how much I love the character and have been looking into his comic appearances; unfortunately, I'm not quite happy with the direction he's been written in recent years (read: X-Force). So, I was wondering if you had any suggestions for older comic runs I could read to get my fill of my favorite bouncing blue Beast?
Hello there, friend! I hope you're well, and perhaps still perusing this blog from time to time? Hard to tell, given the lack of a moniker, but I'll throw this into the Hank McCoy tag, just so you have a better chance of seeing this.
Tumblr media
I am currently in the process of writing up a full Beast reading order, but I've only gotten up to 1981 thus far - really do need to get back on that - so I'm going to give you a somewhat less specific, but far more immediate answer to your question! To wit!
X-Men: First Class, by Jeff Parker.
X-Men: Season One, by Dennis Hopeless.
X-Men: Children of the Atom, by Joe Casey.
Amazing Adventures #11-17, by Gerry Conway.
X-Men Unlimited vol. 2 #10, by Homs.
Avengers vol. 1 #138-211, by, well, a lot of people.
X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga, by Chris Claremont.
Marvel Team-Up #124, by J.M. DeMatteis.
The Defenders/The New Defenders #96-152, by J.M. DeMatteis.
Marvel Heartbreakers, by Jim McCann.
X-Factor vol. 1 #1-70, by Bob Layton (bleuch) and Louise Simonson (yay!).
X-Men Unlimited vol. 1#10 and #14, by Mark Waid and Terry Kavangh.
Marvel Presents #85-92, by Scott Lobdell.
Wonder Man vol. 2 #5 and 6, by Gerard Jones.
Avengers Two: Wonder Man and Beast, by Roger Stern.
New X-Men vol. 1 #114-154, by Grant Morrison.
Astonishing X-Men vol. 3 #1-35, by Joss Whedon and Warren Ellis.
Secret Avengers vol. 1 #13, #16, #20, and #21 by Nick Spencer and Warren Ellis.
Exiles #1-6 vol. 2, by Jeff Parker.
S.W.O.R.D #1-5 vol. 1, by Kieron Gillen.
X-Men: Endangered Species, by Mike Carey.
Wolverine and the X-Men #8 vol. 1, by Jason Aaron.
Amazing X-Men vol. 2 #1-5, by Jason Aaron.
A+X #4, #7, #12 and #15 by Kaare Andrews, Zeb Wells, Christos Gage and Jai Nitz.
Uncanny Avengers vol. 3 #28, by Jim Zub.
Astonishing X-Men vol. 4 #13-17, by Matthew Rosenberg.
Marvel Age #1000, by Rainbow Rowell.
These are, of course, scratching the surface, because Hank is a goddamn cameo king, and you can usually count on him to have some good lines or good characterisation because people actually really enjoy writing him, but these are the ones that come immediately to mind! I hope this helps.

Hello, this is my first original work I’m posting online. This will be on both Tumblr and Ao3 under the name of Days at camp.
Days at camp
Shopping for Groceries
It was only Wednesday and Dale was still so tired he felt like collapsing. It wasn’t as bad as last week was yet, he still had a bad feeling about it...
Not only did he have to get ready for work, but it was also the one day Dale hated... today he had to try to go shopping for groceries. But that was for future him to worry about, right now he just needed to get ready...
It was the same routine every day for Dale, get up, get dressed, find some work, keep the twins out of trouble, sleep and repeat... He was exhausted, but that didn’t change the fact that he had to do it.
So that’s what he did, Dale got up and dressed, walking out of his room to make his way to the kitchen only to hear a clunk, a loud squeak and two excited cheers.
When Dale reached the kitchen, he paused in the doorway to stare over at the very clear bloodied arrow suck into the bathroom door impaling a big rat.
“Why? Just why... Autumn, Harvey, explain this now...” Dale rubbed his head and shifted his gaze to his younger siblings sitting on the counter, bows in their hands.
“That stupid fat rat was the one nibbling the bread in the cabinets!” Harvey yelled
“Yeah, we were just... taking care of it...” Autumn insists more calmly
“And you used the bows?”
“Well duh,” Harvey scoffed rolling his eyes. “What else would we use? We’re more accurate with the bows anyway.” Dale snapped...
“There’s like 18 arrows in the floor! And not to mention how hurt one of you could have gotten doing something that stupid!” Dale screamed at the twins, taking a deep breath.
“Whatever just clean up... And get rid of that rat carcass. I don’t wanna see that thing rotting on the floor when I get home.” Dale lectured. Walking into the bathroom Dale splashed his pale face with water to wake himself up as he looked at the bags under his light blue eyes as he brushed tangled brown hair out of his face keeping the longer strands out of the way with some water.
Walking out of the bathroom again to see the twins pulling arrows out of the floor and lower cabinets. He took a breath and sighed.
“I’m sorry for yelling... I’ve been stressed out and I don’t know what I would’ve done if one of you got hurt...”
“We were just trying to help you with that stupid rat...” Harvey mumbled.
“I know, and you did... but that was a dangerous and reckless thing to do, but I’m proud of both of you for trying to help me out with things... and I have to admit, it was an impressive shot.”
“Really?” Harvey’s face lit up.
“Yes, but don’t go trying to shoot rats with your bows again if you don’t speak to me first, okay?”
“Alright...” They both huffed.
“Good, now I’m going to find some work, I'll be back by dinner time, don’t do anything reckless while I'm gone.”
“No promises.” Harvey stated to Autumn’s amusement as Dale walked out the door and down the steps. He walked down the gravel trail enjoying the sight of the lush green trees before pulling out a small book and writing down his checklist for the day.
1.) Work... obviously. At least 270 for food
2.) Check market for more plant fertilizer
3.) Plan next week's meals
4.) Update budget
5.) Clean the house (pls)
6.) Send jay bird w/ note for Ms. Conway about work next week
7.) Buy groceries
And with another exhausting deep breath Dale took off and flew to find some work at the market. Arriving there he seen the same faces of his neighbors and the rest of the people from the small town of Echo Cliff.
Dale got to work quickly, it was much easier now that almost everybody knew him and the jobs he’d be willing to do. So, it didn’t take long for people to come and ask him to do a job for them or ask for something, a small task here some yard work there even babysitting on occasion...
Dale had lots of energy that not many of his neighbors had, and all the other kids his age didn’t want to do the work he did, so that lead to all the quick mundane jobs that would make him a little extra money.
It helped but today in particular he was looking for a bigger job that would pay nicely with minimal effort. Then came one of the neighbors he loved to see on days like this one.
“Dale my boy!” He turned around to see his elderly neighbor shuffling up to him while waving.
“Oh, hello Mr. Carlson... Is there anything you need today?”
“Oh yes, yes, my boy. You know how I am these days... these old wings just don’t work like they used to...”
Mr. Carlson was a sweet old man and as far as Dale could remember Mr. Carlsons wings have always been missing feathers making it hard to fly, but it had gotten worse in recent years grounding him and making it hard for him to get around... so he would often pay for Dale to buy groceries for him and his wife.
“Tell you what boy, your wings are nice and young, and I best know you should be going to the shops one of these days sooner or later. So, when you go to the shops, I want you to get me a bag of those nice green apples you know the Mrs. And I like, and we’ll make you one of those nice pies you and those troublemakers enjoy so much, and I know money’s tight for you kiddos, so I’ll pay you a pretty penny for your troubles.”
“Oh, of course, I can do that Mr. Carlson, I was actually planning on going to the shops today anyway so I can get those for you today if you want.”
“That’s perfect my boy! I knew I could count on you.” He leaned in close and whispered. “Now here’s the money for those apples, I want you to get me 3 bags, when you drop them off, I'll tell the Mrs. to pay you and whatever is left over you can keep for a little treat” Mr. Carlson winked and went on his way.
With the money from Mr. Carlson and the pie, Dale wouldn’t have to spend as much at the store and he would have a little extra money to save for next time, and with that payment he had finally got done with work, albeit a little later than expected.
Dale quickly made his way to the shops and had enough to pay for the food they’d need for the next week or so, when he was done, Dale put the food in his satchel and went on the search to buy the apples.
Normally the apples in the mountains were less expensive, but when it was winter, the kingdom would no longer be allowed to trade with the agriculture kingdoms for fruits, but this time of year they had just come back in season for long enough for Thunder-vale to trade with neighboring kingdoms and finally get some into shops in the farther cities.
Dale had learned that in the earlier years of trading, past rulers would always buy extra to keep them from selling out to quick or to keep the prices from skyrocketing, but in more recent years the new king and queen would buy a set number of fruit crates for the first few months as a way of “saving money”, but it lead people to fight over them in some richer towns, and lead to less people buying fruits in other towns because the prices had gotten too high.
Especially for Echo cliff... however they were always a few people like Mr. Carlson who had worked for the high council and came to live here from Haven Peak... those people always had extra money to buy things like apples, and they never needed to worry about someone buying them first.
He had always told Dale that he was here for the scenery, or that his wife made him, but Dale was convinced that he came to help people, because he only ever paid people in need to do jobs and even then he would give them too much money and tell them to keep the rest of it because they did a good job.
Dale always went to the same shop same person because they always saved the apples for Mr. Carlson
“Ah, if it isn’t me favorite errand boy! How are you's and them little Tornados doing?”
“We’ve been fine. You know the routine with money lately.”
“Well, if that’s yer case I’m guessing you’s might be here to buy them fruits for a certain harpy next door? I’m guessing he’s wantin’ he’s usual.”
“Actually Mr. Carlson wanted 3 bags today instead.”
“Oh, I sees, I sees, Makin somethin’ special now, is he?”
“Yep, he promised to make us some pie for the trouble.”
“Ah, yours a lucky boy yer is, that old man is stubborn! He don’t be makin’ pies wit his lady fer nothin, he must really care for you’s.” He finally finished bagging the apples and handed them to Dale. “Now, yer best be careful wit them apps, they be expensive this time o’ year, them are hard to replace so fast.”
“I will be, don’t worry.” Dale finished putting the apples in his second bag, making sure it was extra secure, so they didn’t fall out. Dale was finally done for the day for the most part and he was ready to relax. All he needed to do was drop off the apples and finish his list then he would be done!
It didn’t take long until Dale was close enough to home that he could walk instead. He got to Mr. Carlson’s house and made sure to ring the doorbell and knock because he knew Mrs. Carlson might have a hard time hearing it.
“Oh, Hello my little Sunshine boy! I was told you had a little treat for me.” Mrs. Carlson said, leaning in close. She had always treated Dale as if he were her grandchild, she was one of the reasons Dale didn’t completely despise going to the shops
“Of course, Let me bring them to the kitchen for you.”
“Thank you, my dearest sunshine, please come in, have some tea.” Dale unfastened his satchel and set the apple bags on the counter before taking a seat with Mrs. Carlson at the small table in the kitchen.
“Now dearest, how has my little star been? Have you been doing your training?” she asked as she poured him some hot tea.
“I’ve been fine lately; I haven’t had time to train though. I had to take on some more jobs for bills, but the twins haven't been too troublesome...”
“You took on more work? Are you doing okay with that dearie? You know you can always ask me to watch over the twins if you need some time to yourself.” Mrs. Carlson looked wearily at him. She always knew when something was wrong.
“Oh, it’s okay, really... I’m okay with it. Things haven’t really gotten that bad...”
“Are you sure you're doing okay dearie? You look more tired today... are your sleeping issues getting worse again?”
“No...” She gave him a knowing look. “Okay, maybe a bit but-”
“Nuh-uh I will have none of this!” she exclaimed standing up “My star you need sleep if you're going to shine as bright as the sun.” she said in a motherly tone walking over to him. “Darling why haven’t you been sleeping? You need to take time off so you can get some sleep.”
“I’ve just been stressed is all, besides I can’t afford to take time off... I have to pay the bills and keep food on the table for Harvey and Autumn... I can’t just abandon my responsibility so I can act like a child.” Mrs. Carlson laughed at this.
“My dearest sunshine you are a child... and I think I know what you need.” She said simply.
“You do?” he asked hesitantly
“My dear friend Ms. Woods runs a Training camp for the year, and that missy owes me a favor! I could ask for you to go for free.”
“Isn’t that too much to ask though? You don’t need to go out of your way to do things for us. And what about the twins? I can’t just leave them here...”
“They can go with you to the training camp! They’re old enough, I might not need to give this to you, but I want to! It will be good for you darling.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, my dearest. You deserve this, you give your everything all the time... Maybe be selfish this once.”
“Fine... but only for you.” she smiled holding his hands in hers.
“Thank you, my dearest sunshine. Now here.” She handed him the money. “Isn’t it time for you to get home to those little rascals?”
“Oh my celestials yes! It's almost dinner time!” Dale ran out the door, the idea of camp was still in the back of his mind as he left.
Author Note: Thank you for reading this all the way through, I really hope you all liked this! I’m sorry this took so long, I had a terrible day. This is some of the first original work I’m posting and if you wanna find out where the story goes next, I will be planning on posting once a month on Ao3 and Tumblr.

The Rap Grammy Nominations Are Weird As Hell | Nov 25, 2020 11:12 AM BY TOM BREIHAN
The very first time that the Grammy Awards recognized rap music, it was an utter fiasco — a clear case of an aging pop-music establishment failing to understand this vital new youth music that had sprung up and rewritten the rules. For the 1989 awards show, the Grammys added one rap category, Best Rap Performance. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won it for “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” beating out LL Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa and Kool Moe Dee and JJ Fad. The show didn’t deign to recognize Public Enemy, N.W.A, EPMD, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B. & Rakim, or Ice-T, all of whom had released classic albums within the voting window. The award wasn’t televised, and most of the nominees, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince included, skipped the show, attending a “Boycott The Grammys” party instead.
Since that night, the history of rap at the Grammys has been a series of baffling, embarrassing decisions. It’s Steely Dan winning Album Of The Year over The Marshall Mathers LP. It’s Gretchen Wilson winning Best New Artist over Kanye West. “It’s weird and it sucks that I robbed you.” It’s also a history of rappers getting angry over the Grammys: “I never let a statue tell me how nice I am,” “You think I give a damn about a Grammy?” In 2019, Drake showed up to accept Best Rap Song. In his acceptance speech, he talked about how the Grammy voters weren’t necessarily the right people to define rap success. The broadcast cut him off mid-speech. Earlier this year, Kanye West, a man who once cared more about Grammy Awards than anyone else not named Neil Portnow, tweeted a video of himself pissing on one of his Grammys. (The Grammys still nominated West this year, for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.)
Yesterday, the Grammys nominated Freddie Gibbs and the Alchemist’s Alfredo in the Best Rap Album category. That’s great! Freddie Gibbs is a great underground rap success story, a guy who bet on himself and kept doing great work in his own lane even after multiple major-label situations fell apart. Gibbs has never made a hit song in his life, and he’s gotten himself into a position where he doesn’t need to make hit songs — where he can just follow his instincts and keep his own style intact. Alfredo isn’t my favorite rap record of the year. (Even in the field of Alchemist-produced 2020 rap albums, I’d give the slight edge to Boldy James’ The Price Of Tea In China.) But the nomination for Alfredo is still a very cool surprise, the kind of thing that I would’ve never expected to see from the Grammy nominating committee.
youtube
And yet Gibbs’ nomination doesn’t exactly announce a new golden age of Grammy rap consideration, a time when Recording Academy voters are finally figuring out how to approach the genre. Instead, his nomination points toward something else: An institutional recognition of middlebrow, middle-aged, respectable rap music.
All of this year’s Best Rap Album nominees are Black men between the ages of 35 and 47. The oldest nominee is Nas, who is now on his fifth Best Rap Album nomination and who has never won the award. (The Best Rap Album Grammy didn’t exist in 1994, when Nas released Illmatic, but there’s no way in hell that Nas would’ve won it anyway. The Academy would’ve given the award to Coolio’s It Takes A Thief or something.) The youngest nominee is D Smoke, a former high school Spanish teacher who is also the brother of the TDE R&B singer SiR. D Smoke made his way into Grammy contention after winning the first season of Rhythm + Flow, the Netflix rap-competition show. (Two of the three judges from Rhythm + Flow, Cardi B and Chance The Rapper, have won Best Rap Album themselves. T.I., the other judge, has been nominated three times and never won.)
youtube
D Smoke isn’t exactly a revered or popular rapper, and I have’t seen anyone calling his perfectly-OK album Black Habits a masterpiece, though the man has certainly done better than anyone could’ve expected from a rap reality-show winner. But D Smoke raps exactly like a diet version of Kendrick Lamar, so his nomination works as a clear indication that the Grammy voters really, really wish they had a Kendrick album to nominate. D Smoke is also up for Best New Artist, alongside fellow rappers Chika, Megan Thee Stallion, and (I guess) Doja Cat. Presumably, Megan’s Good News would also be nominated if it had come out early enough to be eligible. Meanwhile, Chika hasn’t released an album, and Doja Cat is nominated in the pop categories, not the rap ones.
Instead, then, we’re looking at five guys hovering around the age of 40, all of whom are respected technicians with boom-bap inclinations. Jay Electronica, who’s nominated for A Written Testimony and who should probably be considered the front-runner, is technically a New Orleans native, but nobody thinks of him as a Southern rapper. (Jay-Z is all over A Written Testimony, to the point where anointing Jay Electronica feels a bit like throwing awards love to Jay-Z in a year with no Jay-Z album.) All the albums up for Best Rap Album are, at the very least, solid. A couple of them, Alfredo and A Written Testimony, are very good. But this is still a remarkably stodgy list — one that shows that the whole middle-aged respectability fetish that’s long plagued the Grammys is now embedded in its rap voting wing.
Freddie Gibbs and Nas and Jay Electronica and D Smoke and Royce Da 5’9″ are all gifted rappers who have done great work. Most of them could justifiably be considered legends. But none of them really show the world where rap music is, let alone where it’s going. By recognizing those albums, the Grammys have pointedly elected not to recognize something like Lil Baby’s My Turn, which is probably 2020’s most popular album in any genre and which is also a fine example of the 808-heavy depressive melodic-goo rap music that currently dominates the genre’s mainstream.
youtube
Other hugely popular, artistically important albums are also absent: Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake, Roddy Rich’s Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, Polo G’s The Goat, Gunna’s Wunna, Rod Wave’s Pray 4 Love. Instead, the rap albums getting nominated are the 2020 equivalents of the Steely Dan album that famously beat Eminem. That’s not an indictment of the nominated albums. It’s an indictment of the stuff the Recording Academy values. It’s also a cautionary look of how things might look if the Recording Academy ever gets its way, if rap comes to rely on accepted ossified skill-sets instead of its current state of constant, furious stylistic evolution.
As someone who’s around the same age as this year’s Best Rap Album nominees, I’m not all that amped to see emotionally troubled, pill-gobbling 20-year-olds dominating rap music. But those kids are crucially moving the genre past whatever old men like me might want it to be. Fortunately, there’s at least one Grammy category that has done a pretty good job capturing where things are right now, and that’s Best Rap Song. The list of nominations there — Lil Baby’s “The Bigger Picture,” Roddy Ricch’s “The Box,” Drake’s “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” DaBaby’s “Rockstar,” and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” — isn’t necessarily perfect, but it’s a fairly accurate representation of the kind of rap that moves people right now. I don’t know why the division between the Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song nominees is so stark. Maybe it’s a signal that the album is increasingly irrelevant. Maybe it reflects two different voting bodies. Either way, it’s striking.
youtube
Look, the Grammys are weird. They are always going to be weird. Fiona Apple’s Fetch The Bolt Cutters should’ve been the biggest lay-up in the world, but it isn’t up for Album Of The Year. Instead, the Academy’s voters went for Coldplay and Jacob Collier and a deluxe edition of a Black Pumas album that didn’t even come out in the eligibility period. “Rockstar” and “Savage” are both up for Record Of The Year, but Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding is the only album that’s even rap-adjacent that’s nominated for Album Of The Year this year. I thought for sure that Lil Baby’s My Turn would be the token rap album that would inevitably lose to Taylor Swift. Instead, we didn’t even get one of those, and My Turn got snubbed even in its own category. Nothing makes sense.
But this year’s Best Rap Albums nominations still show a weird alignment between Grammy Voters and a certain streak of real-hip-hop rap conservatism. Watch out for that. Nothing good, except maybe a Freddie Gibbs Grammy win, will come out of that.
FURIOUS FIVE
1. Roc Marciano – “Downtown 81” It’s not on streaming services yet, but Roc Marciano’s new album Mt. Marci is out in the world now, and it is marvelous. (I can’t tell you whether the digital download is worth the $40 that Marci is charging on his website. Make your own financial decisions.) Right now, the only song out for general consumption is one of the few that Marci didn’t produce himself. (It’s a Jake One beat.) But otherwise, “Downtown 81” is exactly the sort of laid-back, intricately worded deadpan splendor that you can expect to hear on the LP, whenever it goes wide. So maybe that’s worth the price of a full tank of gas.
2. Meek Mill – “GTA” (Feat. 42 Dugg)
Meek Mill released his Quarantine Pack EP on Friday, and the track currently getting the big push is the downbeat Lil Durk collab “Pain Away.” But the real thrill here is in hearing Meek and 42 Dugg getting bracingly urgent over a Detroit-ass bassline.
3. Chief Keef & Mike Will Made-It – “Status” Sosa and Mike Will have evidently chosen to name their new song after this column. Gentlemen, I see this tribute, and I appreciate it. I love you too.
4. Willie The Kid & V Don – “Mother Of Pearls” (Feat. Eto) This is pretty.
5. Statik Selektah – “Play Around” (Feat. Conway The Machine, 2 Chainz, Killer Mike, Allan Kingdom, & Haile Supreme)
Once upon a time, maybe 13 years ago, I was apparently such a recognizable and influential part of the New York rap press that Statik Selektah noticed me at an MOP show, introduced himself, and tried to get me to listen to his mix CD. All these years later, Statik is a globally acknowledged boom-bap specialist with enough juice to put three of the world’s greatest middle-aged rappers on a track together. I’m proud of Statik. I bet he gets nominated for a Grammy someday.

Just over a hundred years ago, in 1909, the noted American palaeontologist Charles Doolittle Walcott discovered something strange in the Canadian Rockies. Ghostly imprints were etched into the rock, faintly delineating the twisted filaments of legs or antennae. A myriad of ancient organisms, five hundred million years old, were pressed between the layers of shale, their soft tissues intricately preserved. In many ways, Walcott had hit the palaeontological jackpot, as the fossil beds in what became known as the Burgess Shale formation contained some of the oldest, most diverse and best-preserved fossils known at the time. Soft tissue preservation was unprecedented in rocks of this immense age, and the Burgess Shale allowed scientists to examine an ancient ecosystem almost as it would have appeared when the animals were alive. The fossils were numerous and bizarre; along with the ones shown in the photos, Marella and Canadia (trilobite and annelid worm ancestors respectively) stranger forms were found, such as Opabinia, with a cluster of five eyes and a proboscis, and Hallucigenia, with a double row of long spines down its back. Derek Briggs and Simon Conway Morris, later to become famous as influential writers and theorists, concluded that a lot of the species in the Burgess shale had no modern descendants, and represented ancient groups - phyla - unknown from any other period in time. Based on these findings, the evoluntionary biologist Steven Jay Gould wrote a famous book (Wonderful Life) postulating that the animals had been failed evolutionary 'experiments' which died out as more well-adapted forms emerged.
Study of the site has been ongoing into the present day, and a better understanding of the species has led to the evolutionary experiment hypothesis to be largely abandoned, as many of them have now been fitted into existing groups. In 2014, a new Burgess Shale outcrop was announced: by the time the find went public, at least fifty species had already been found, and species new to science are still being discovered.
-TJT
The photos show the fossils Marella, a trilobite precursor, and Canadia, related to the ringed worms (annelids). They were found on the Smithsonian Museum's website, where a lot more information on the discovery of the Burgess Shale Formation can be found. http://bit.ly/1G6Fwwv

Ghost Spider problems
Disclaimer: the comic is not bad. Take this as constructive criticism
1. Start from the beginning
This is all you get when it comes to Gwen’s origin.
Tumblr media
And before you say that this is mirroring Peter, no. Amazing Fantasy #15 was a fully fleshed out origin story. Amazing Spider-man #1 takes place immediately after Uncle Ben’s murder. Gwen’s origin encompasses years of her being Spider-woman with actual events that go beyond just a sparse origin. When Spider-Gwen starts, we are like coming in at the equivalent of Amazing Spider-man #300.
So Jason Latour tries to use flashbacks and detailed full page word dump expositions at the end of each issue to further fill in the gap between the shit the audience doesn’t know. The latter is quite frankly the laziest thing I’ve ever seen in writing. Rather than creating stories to establish characters and create a catalogue to their history, lets fucking just explain everything that happened in essay form.
Tumblr media
This, til this day, pisses me off.
Anyways, when Latour did introduce a characters like a Harry Osborn, he relied on flashbacks to detail what happened. The issue however that he was simultaneously advancing a story while retroactively setting foundation of a character. One example of a past event being constructed entirely out of flashbacks: the death of Peter Parker.
Tumblr media
In these flashbacks that are construed across multiple issues and not in chronological order of either the issue nor the flashback, Latour basically shows the audience for the first time Peter’s personality, how Gwen was after her dad indirectly told her about his feeling about Spider-Woman, and a little about their high school life.
The problem with this is that Latour relied on the interpretation of 616 Spider-man characters when he didn’t elaborate on their character for characters like George Stacy, J. Jonah Jameson, and Aunt May while simultaneously hiding behind the excuse of it’s an alternate universe to explain why characters are different. This comes with accusations of character shilling since he portrayed Em Jay as a selfish self-centered person, Peter as an arrogant misanthrope, but Gwen completely escapes her negative 616 characterization and comes off looking better.
So Spider-Gwen really doesn’t have an origin story. And no one actually bothered to make one even 4 years later.
2. Alternate Dimensions convolutes stories
Traveling to another dimension to just fucking go to school is cop out. Granted, the explanation as to why it was done was simply because Gwen doesn’t have a secret identity anymore, but okay, far be it for me from wanting a good time. It would have been more interesting if she persisted in trying to go to school in her universe while being known as Spider-woman, anxiety attacks be damned. “Man fuck consequences of a plot point, let’s just create a specific scenario to avoid them” is what McGuire decided to do. Didn’t even bother to retcon. Just fucking noped it.
Tumblr media
MJ says what I’m thinking.
Barring this, it is a stretches my suspension of disbelief that ESU would enroll a girl who not only is named after a deceased student who you named a library after in memoriam but also looks like the girl who died and is around the same age. Oh and also, you hired the guy who looks exactly like her mentor who went on to practice unethical experiments and tried to conquer the world with them at one point but he has a different name so...
Granted, Latour twice left Spider-Gwen in a hole. He wasted Gwen revealing her identity to her father for the introduction of the character and Gwen then revealing her identity to the world to defeat Matt Murderdock kind of screwed the pooch. First, there has to be a way for Gwen to defeat him without sacrificing her identity like exonerating herself from being blamed for Peter’s death because clearly she’s innocent(self-defense and saving kids from some incel white boy turned monster is not an jailable offense).
Regardless, McGuire was dealt a shitty hand that nuked any possibility of continuing any story developments in E-65 without Gwen being under constant danger. I, for one, would welcome it and had Gwen continue to try, it would have made shit interesting.
But this is also taking away Gwen from her own supporting cast that she has had since the beginning and also from her setting. The more she is in 616, the less I am going to see of the Mary Janes. The less I see of Harry although I don’t mind that. The less I see of any character that was established in her series. And honestly, those new characters could have been introduced in her own setting. Hell, E-65 Jackal could have been a college professor at E-65 ESU without Gwen knowing if she attended there.
Why are we choosing to avoid superhero drama in a superhero comic book?
3. Don’t rely on 616 Gwen Stacy while simultaneously declaring this Gwen as a different character
For all intents and purposes, the Death of Gwen Stacy has nothing to do with Spider-Gwen. This book and her fans will deflect any criticism about the lack of parallels between Gwen Stacy’s death and Peter’s death by saying Spider-Gwen is not the same as Gwen. You sit there and complain that all Gwen Stacy is known for is dying yet you commentate using a completely amended character while simultaneously avoiding the literal hundred of issues of character that 616 Gwen previously had before her death.
If you read the Night Gwen Stacy Died as a stand-alone, what you did was the equivalent of watching the Red Wedding without the three seasons leading to the event.
Spider-Gwen can’t go five issues without harping on about every miserable or unhappy or dead Gwen in some other universe. It comes to a culmination that writers want to tie Spider-Gwen to 616 Gwen Stacy so much that she is actively going to school in 616. The same school that Gwen attended and has a library named after her in memoriam, and apparently her creepy stalker teacher still teaches at albeit with a different identity because no one apparently recognizes faces anymore.
This doesn’t redeem Gwen. In fact, you proved Gerry Conway’s point. 616 Gwen is so unlikeable that you’d have to completely change her character to make her not worth throwing off the bridge.
Point is that Spider-Gwen treading the stories of Gwen Stacy defeats the purpose of separating the two in personality. What happens if Kindred is revealed to be the ressurrected Gwen Stacy while Gwen basically caught treading her stories instead of continuing her own?
4. The Jackal? Fucking really?
Personal, but point still stands. I fucking hate the Jackal. Jackal is like the catalyst of feeling like you need to take a shower afterwards. Along with the Inherentors, this is one of the villains that go to far in being made for a specific purpose in that they really don’t have a motivation as to just why do they do the things they do other than to be a bad guy.
Warren Miles is a creepy professor with an almost paedophillic obsession with his barely legal and also dead mentee, 616 Gwen Stacy. And it’s only almost because Gwen was 19 and almost certainly would have engaged in a sexual relationship with her. I don’t buy that he saw her as his child because it’s not like Gwen was just this remarkable science prodigy that would warrant any special attention from a professor. No, she was a remarkable and hot co-Ed scientist that was in her sophomore year. He was trying to fuck her and hated that she was dating guys her age. I wouldn’t put it past him to quid quo pro her into some sick shit for grades.
And the thing about it is that this story has been done before with Mary Jane and it was more appropriate to her occupation as she was a model at the time and married to Peter Parker. She is going to get the attention of richer and skeezy men that would have the power to force her into questionable shit. Hollywood is pretty much a glorified sex trafficking ring, don’t @ me. Far be it for me to say male professors don’t abuse their station on women and sure, I’d like a Spider-Man story to explore that, but Jackal takes it to a whole other that defiles the memory of a dead girl. It is basically a type of necrophilia and ew ew ew ew.
His obsession with Gwen and clones doesn’t foil Peter in anyway. It literally carries this creepy and unsettling implication that if Gwen lived, he would have raped her. There has never been a good Jackal storyline. It is literally the CJ meme every time he appears. He is not an engaging or fun.
Guess who is the first villain Gwen faces in 616.
Tumblr media
Why people insist on putting him in anything over more thematically appropriate and fun characters is beyond me. I don’t even mind 65 Jackal. He doesn’t seem to interested in teenaged girls. He just wants to kill her like a proper super villain from what I gather. But of course, we had to not be spared from the comic equivalent of taint that is Miles Warren.
