Borderbound: Anya's Escape to Ostania
This is a short fic showcasing the aftermath following Anya's escape from the lab. It includes an original character, another one of the test subjects. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
On a mid autumn night, there had been a breach in one of Westalis' military bases. Stationed close to the border of Ostania, it housed an unsuspected facility inside. A lab, one in which conducted inhumane experiments on young children. These tests gave the children supernatural abilities that could be used to aid the government. But two of them were able to aid each other to avoid being pawns of authorities.
The escapees were Anya, a telepath, and Kit, a shape shifter. Also known as No. 007 and No. 003, respectively. Ditching the numbers was the first step for them to take towards true freedom. And so, Kit and Anya were born.
Kit was a fair bit older than the young girl, spending the past sixteen years of their life in that facility, while Anya only two. The eighteen-year-old took it upon themselves to take care of the only four-year-old Anya. Not to say Anya hadn't been useful. During their initial escape, her mind reading abilities helped them figure out passcodes and unlock many doors in the facility. Without her, Kit was sure that they'd never have been able to escape at all.
But Anya was still only a child. Her legs were small and she tired easily from distances. She was no match for the rough terrain they had to cross over to reach the border. And so Kit opted to carry the small one on their back. Everything was going decently at first. At least until...
"I'm hungry..."
The child whined as she clinged to the older one's back. Both of them had gone several hours without eating anything. Only one was vocal about the rumblings in their stomach.
Kit continued walking as the girl riding on her continued to groan uncomfortably. She had already held out for so long for a little girl. But her patience was starting to wear thin and frustrations were building up.
"Just a little further Anya. Just hold on," Kit said, hoping to soothe her in some way. In reality they still had a difficult journey ahead of them. But keeping Anya happy and motivated would give them greater odds of making it there together.
"I... I'm so hungry Kitty," she replied, her nose beginning to snivel.
Of course, there was that. There had always been something about her that just made Kit's heart melt.
"Alright, alright. I do have something," Kit sighed before bending down so the small girl could slide safely off their back. Once grounded, her companion turned around to face her.
"I have something called a peanut. I only have one, but they are surprisingly filling," Kit hummed before they dug around in their pants pocket.
"Peanut?" Anya questioned as she looked up at Kit with curious eyes.
During their departure from the lab, Kit came across a bowl of dry roasted peanuts in a break room. Kit had eaten most of them to build up their strength, but saved one for later. An ideal travel snack.
Kit took it out of their pocket and handed it to Anya. The girl's green eyes brimmed with curiosity as she stared at the legume. She reached out to take it and was immediately enthralled by the texture of the outer shell.
"It may be small, but it will help your tummy feel better. I was considering just eating it myself but..." Kit's voice trailed off as they thought about their own sustained hunger.
A large downside to Kit's ability was that it took a lot of energy, leaving them quite hungry. Not that the two of them were ever fed much to begin with. Poor Anya wasn't even given proper food, gruel meant for animal consumption. The sickening feeling in their stomach overpowered the hunger they felt.
"Just eat it. I'm sure I'll find some more food for us soon," Kit insisted as the child quickly put the whole thing in her mouth. They didn't even get to tell her that the shell wasn't traditionally eaten.
Even so, Anya chomped and chewed happily on the new food item. It was probably for the best anyways. The whole peanut would be more nourishing. Probably.
"It's very tasty! Thank you Kitty!" Anya chirped after swallowing the bits of peanut in her mouth.
A slight grin came to Kit's lips. Even after all she's been through, no, all they've both been through, they can both find reasons to smile. It was too soon to feel truly happy, but in this moment Kit was content.
"Now come on, we've got to hurry. The sooner we get there, the sooner we can have more food," Kit said as they knelt down to the ground so Anya could climb back on. However instead of following her elder's request, she instead crossed her arms.
"More peanuts?" Anya asked, voice hopeful of the prospect of having more. Kit couldn't help but grimace. They could surely acquire better food than that.
"I was thinking of other food. There are a lot more delicious foods than just—"
"I want more peanuts!" Anya demanded with a hearty smile. It was clear that without any other food to showcase, she would insist on eating more peanuts.
"I'll get you all the peanuts you can eat then."
Anya seemed satisfied with that response and trotted behind her guardian. When her arms were securely around Kit's neck, she was lifted up again. Kit then resumed walking up the arduous path ahead. No matter how challenging, they would get Anya and themselves to safety. Perhaps then the two of them could be a "family" together. Once they were safe of course.
Family...
Kit wondered what that would look like. They had only heard from researchers about the concept. But... It sounded nice. Being in a family would definitely make Anya happy.
If you liked this please heart and reblog! If enough people like it I may be encouraged to turn this into a multi-chapter longfic!

List of trans books
There won't be only books
As usual I'm posting in private because I'm terrified of being mis/perceived;
I call a "trans book" anything that deals with transness in a way or another. I'll try to add details so it's more transparent: - if the author is trans - the genre (fiction, theory, autobiography/memoir mainly) - if it's a book or a comic (more Bande Dessinée ig)
also my personal subjective ranking if I've read it. So brace yourselves
Books I've read
Genderqueer, Maia Kobabe (memoir) (NB author) (comic)
Genderflou, Thamos (French) (memoir too ig) (NB author) (BD)
I wish you all the best (fiction, YA book, trans author)
"Boys Run the Riot" (manga, fiction, trans author)
Film/series I've watched
Dead end (Netflix serie,
Feel good (Netflix serie, live-action, kinda based off actor's life. Sapphic.)
Books I'm currently reading
Gender euphoria
Books I haven't read (and want to) [ok there's not only trans books but i can do what i want thanks]
Stone Butch Blues
trucs traduits par Matérialisme Trans (mais en VO ducou)
Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir (memoir?fictif?)
Les genres fluides: de Jeanne d'Arc aux saintes trans, Clovis Maillet
apparently there's other stuff and a list > i'll try to find it
Befire We Were Trans, Kit Heyam
Amateur: A True Story About What Makes a Man (memoir)
Something That May Shock and Discredit You (memoir)
Felix Ever After (fiction, YA book, trans author)
Detransition, Baby - Torrey Peters
She gets the girl, Rachael Lippincott & Alyson Derrick
butch stone blues > je l'avais deja croise ca a l'air banger
for non binary leads books : https://www.instagram.com/p/CqdafLdoLY1/ but there are too much stuff i'm overwhelmed
Social media
@front_transmasc sur insta
@alt_fem sur insta fait une anthologie transfem de textes
Lake Fama's comics (NB author) (they post it on Tumblr & Insta i think? they won't make much anymore tho)
Nate Stevenson (NB author) (they post on a newsletter) (he also published a book that's a compilation of his Tumblr annual new year's posts of the 2010s and i love it but i can't really count it there because it's published just before he transitions)

Note
I don’t think people should speculate about people’s sexuality and gender identity. But recently I saw a tweet that was talking about Lorde potentially exploring her gender and people were attacking this person for saying that and saying that every time a woman doesn’t wear make up people believe she must be non binary. But I actually got where OP was coming from, not because Lorde wasn’t wearing make up or because she was wearing masculine clothes, but because she was posting in a “masculine” sort of way and there was a picture of her holding a microphone as a dick. Sure, you can do that and be a girly girl, but people were focusing on the make up when it was more about the vibe she was giving. It got to the point where it felt kind of transphobic because they were way too mad about the idea of Lorde being maybe a bit gender fluid.
I have now seen that he posted a story that said “buying flowers on a boy day” implying that she maybe does feel more manly some days and that person was right all along
I don’t think a dose of speculation on gender/sexuality is a bad thing, unless the person explicitly asks for it to stop at which point you… stop. Because plenty of celebs (same as real life people) signal things and play around with labels and identities and shit and many celebs have said they feel quite seen when they’re still figuring this out/signaling/deciding and fans pick up on it and support it. I think very actively hetty truthering is really quite unkind and can lead to forced outings tbh as well (Kit Connor obvi but Billie also felt that a bit). I think PRESSURING people to choose a public identity is mad fucked up. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying “looks like Lorde could be experimenting with gender a bit” or how that is in any way problematic? It’d be way more problematic to be like “Lorde is 100000% cis, shut up” lol. Like we don’t know? We can’t know? Lorde might not know? Because she’s a real person and not a fictional character. Same as when Billie did her first “yay girls” stuff like the “she’s queerbaiting” imho was more what led to her feeling like she was outed than anyone being like “oh look Billie may be a bit into girls” idk. To me a little speculation is no more invasive than like “are X and Y dating” which like yea is a little invasive but also gossip is gossip lol and Lorde could be a bit gender fluid or experimenting with it for sure!

Gender.
Tumblr media
In recent years the fashion industry has adressed its concerns about the issues of diversity within the industry especially with male and trans models not being as emphasised as women models and women’s wear, re inviting the argument of genderless garments or collections.
Tumblr media
•Harry styles
Styles has been in the spotlight since 2010 for his increasing musical career, however styles has also been seen in the media and talked about due to his ‘interesting fahsion’ choices. Anyone who has known of styles for a while can tell you how his career has mainly been full of floral Gucci suits and patterned blouses.
In 2020 Harry styles was seen on the cover or vogue in which he was photographed wearing a dress which sparked debates across social media about masculinity in todays world and peoples opinions of gender fluid fashion. Styles was highly criticised for not being ‘manly’ by the media however the media is trying to promote gender diversity in fashion and criticises the industry for not being diverse. The Vogue images of Harry Styles, if anything, are a representation of exploration, comfort, gender fluidity and non-binary dressing, which shouldn’t be criticised but highlighted as a way of feeling comfortable in the clothes you are wearing and bringing much more diversity into the fashion world. Nothing more, nothing less. Questioning and suggesting things about someone by saying they are any less of a man is really ironic as people are claiming to be changing these stereotypes of what a man and a woman is supposed to be or wear. As a society we are supposed to be evolving and understanding how we don’t have to be labeled a certain way or defined by a gender. But beyond simply feeling good in his clothes and skin, Styles believes that fashion is an essential part of any performance, commenting on several musical icons who've strengthened their public personas through their personal style. "I used to wear all black all of the time,” he said. "But I was realising dressing up was a part of the show, if you will. Especially when performing. So, I think for the people I have always admired and looked up to in music, clothes have always been a big part of the thing. Like Bowie, Elvis Presley. It's always been part of the thing."

• Leah Williamson
Leah Williamson, England captain and Arsenal footballer is often seen in her football kit, loving the pride and unity of it however, any opportunity for Williamson to dress up she leans into it embracing her individuality, love and respect for fashion. An ACL injury has meant Williamson not only sitting out of football and the World Cup, but also out of heels. Instead, loafers have become her go-to making a perfect pairing for tailoring. 'I’m enjoying wearing power suits,' William states it makes her feel powerful and embracing gender neutral fashion is really important to her. Due to football being seen as a ‘masculine’ sport Comfort for Williamson at any sort of fashion based events has come to mean 'glamming up masculine energy. That’s me,' she affirms. 'When you feel comfortable you carry yourself in a way that means you can be your true self.'

today, a huge amount of openly transgender supermodels walk the catwalks of international fashion weeks, snag deals as the faces of big beauty brands and grace the covers of the fashion industry’s most coveted magazines. However, only recently has Vogue debuted its first trans cover star, 22-year-old Brazilian-born Sampaio. Valentina however hasn’t had the easiest of experiences whilst being trans and in the fashion industry in an interview she explains this “Early on, I had a high-profile modeling job, and once they realized on set that I was trans, I was suddenly fired. To share the excitement and pride of a job with friends and family, only to then be shamed and rejected – it is heartbreaking. I am very grateful to God and all the people who have helped me along my journey so far. I honor the challenges of those who came before me, who directly or indirectly have made it possible for me to be where I am today.”

Here’s a lovely example of how coming out isn’t a one time thing.
I run into #9 a lot because my spouse is non-binary and AFAB.  People look at me and start using masculine pronouns when I mention my spouse.  Then they see my spouse or learn their name and switch to feminine pronouns, often thinking I used gender neutral pronouns because I was covering up that I’m gay (newsflash: I’m not).  I am using gender neutral terms/pronouns because those are my spouse’s preferred pronouns.
The other thing this made me think about was Kit Connor.  Poor kid wasn’t given the opportunity to come out the way he wanted or was ready to.  I’m sure he was out to who he wanted to be out, but read this and see all the ways one has to come out.  Your family.  The people that you work with.  That clerk who just assumes you’re straight.  And just because you’re a public figure doesn’t mean you owe the world something you want to keep private, especially when you’re so young and you might not even know for sure what you are.
In the first vignette Patrick admits it to himself, when he’s 30.  Maybe Kit, who is just 18, was still figuring it out.  I know I was bouncing back and forth between different identities at that age because I didn’t even realize I wasn’t straight until I was a senior in high school.  I had my own David Rose walk into my photography class (more specifically, a dream one night).  Her name was Sarah and she had purple hair.  I eventually settled on bisexual my junior year of college, but even that came into question when I met my spouse (I was 32) and they explained their gender identity to me.  I’m sure there are people who think I should identify as pansexual, but I think my spouse being more gender fluid actually solidifies my bisexuality because I basically get both in one person.
He wasn’t ready.  He might not be sure.  It’s ok not to be sure, no matter how old you are, but especially when you’re so young.  And you don’t have to prove your sexuality to anyone.  You don’t have to come out if you’re not ready.  You don’t have to come out if you don’t want to. You don’t owe it to anyone.
Kit didn’t get that and it breaks my heart.

Haven't read the whole thing (it's 3:30am), but reblogging before I forget about it.
Here's the thing: I'm a cis woman married to a non-binary person and I still identify as bisexual.
I started getting a little weird about it and would refer to myself as "bi/pan" because the binary of bisexual made me feel like I was labeling myself wrong because I'm not married to a man or a woman.
Then Kit Connor's forced outing happened and I decided I'm sticking with bisexual for a few reasons.
My main reason honestly being that I don't like the image "pansexual" puts in my head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, I'm aware it's a totally irrational reason for disliking the label, but it's always gonna be there in my head so 🤷‍♀️
The other reason I still like "bi" is the idea of it meaning I'm attracted to same and different genders. Simple.
But lastly, even if you don't think I can be attracted to a non-binary person if I'm bi, well, if they're gender fluid, then guess what: I get both in the same person. My spouse doesn't openly identify as gender fluid because they feel it isn't anyone's business that their gender identity changes from day to day, but it does.
So yes,
Tumblr media
(will eventually create a pattern for this on my Etsy whenever TF I feel like it)
but I'm not pansexual. I didn't think I'd ever be into rosé, which might make you (and it even made myself) think I can't be bi then, but I am. Same and different. Sometimes you can find that in one person and it's really fucking awesome. That's why I put a ring on it.
Tumblr media
people are super dedicated to erasing david's canon pansexuality, so i've detailed it all here and explained why it's all a crock of panphobic shit hope you enjoy

[“Whether or not any of these people lived as women again after the war was over, their trans experiences left a legacy in the way their fellow captives thought about gender. Cohen-Portheim and Dunbar-Kalckreuth both used accounts of their internment to reflect on the fluid and non-binary nature of gender, and its independence from the body. Cohen-Portheim writes of his discovery that ‘a predominantly masculine nature may belong to a person of the female sex and a predominantly feminine one to a person of the male sex’. Similarly, Dunbar-Kalckreuth writes that ‘Male and female characteristics… occur in different percentages in both sexes’: ‘Whatever innate femininity there is in this one-gender world of men [i.e. in the camps] gradually takes form, on the stage and elsewhere’.
Both writers are articulating contemporary sexological theories – but they present their attitudes as shaped not by reading, but by camp life. As Dunbar-Kalckreuth recalls, when watching onstage female presentation, ‘We felt, not for the first time, how much better the world would be if certain men were ladies and certain ladies men’. This opinion is not, he specifies, based on internees appearing stereotypically feminine: ‘Alas! This is not a matter of aesthetics!’
The story of gender nonconformity in wartime camps is a story of hundreds of thousands of people, and almost as many different kinds of history. It’s the history of theatre, and how performances have adapted to new and challenging contexts. It’s the history of human resilience, and how people work to create a sense of normality in situations that are so far from normal. It’s the history of queer sexuality, and how gender nonconformity has often enabled, sanctioned and signalled it. And it’s trans history, in several ways. Living as women provided some captives with an outlet for existing trans experiences. For others, it changed the way they experienced their gender, whether fleetingly or forever. And beyond their individual experience, those who lived as women rewrote the rules of gender, so that Cohen-Portheim could write in absolute terms, ‘No male is simply male, and no female simply female’.
The experience of world war, which depleted societies of men and gave women unprecedented access to economic and other forms of independence, was one that shifted gender norms in unsettling ways: a 1918 article in The Times gave voice to fears that ‘one ill-effect of the war would be the development of a definite third sex, something neither man nor woman’. In this wider experience of gender disruption, the trans history of internment and PoW camps played an important but overlooked part. If we leave unchallenged the assumption that theatrical gender nonconformity and trans experience are mutually exclusive, we risk covering up one of the most significant strands of trans history that Europe has ever seen.”]

“I’m not even sure bisexuality exists. I think it’s just a layover on the way to Gaytown,” Carrie Bradshaw famously said in the offensive, misinformed 1998 episode of Sex and the City in which she dates a bisexual man. These words are still painfully seared into my brain. How could a sex columnist, a character written predominantly by gay men, have such a limited view of queer identity? Nearly ten years later, a 2016 episode of HBO dramedy Insecure sees Molly (Yvonne Orji) finding out that the man she’s seeing, Jared, nonchalantly had a sexual encounter with another man. After exposing her biphobia to her friends, another character declares Jared to be gay. Ultimately, Molly and Carrie both decide, despite the chemistry and their attraction, that they could not get past their own compulsory monosexuality to continue dating a bisexual man. Why does television, a medium primed for long-form character development and storytelling, continuously fail at representing bisexual men?
Twenty-five years after that infamous Sex and the City scene, bisexuality (for the purposes of this piece, I am using bisexuality as a term that encompasses all people with the capacity to be attracted to more than one gender, including those who identify as bisexual, pansexual, fluid, queer, and more) on television has made significant strides—from young-adult programming like Euphoria, Riverdale, and Gossip Girl, to adult dramas like Game of Thrones, The Magicians, and obviously, The Bisexual. Bisexuality is no longer relegated to a very-special episode, and is slowly leaving the realm of bad, misinformed jokes. According to GLAAD’s 2021-2022 Where We Are on TV report, queer representation on television is at an all-time high. After two consecutive years of decreases, bisexual representation increased by one percent over last year: nine non-binary characters, 124 women, and sadly, only 50 men. Fifty may seem like a solid number at the outset, but consider the quality of these representations. Aside from a few stand-out examples, like Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) on Netflix’s much-loved Heartstopper, many are relegated to supporting and recurring characters, at best, and stuck in tropes, at worst.
Maria San Filippo is an associate professor at Emerson College whose research focuses on screen media’s intersections with gender and sexuality. In 2013, she published The B Word: Bisexuality in Contemporary Film and Television, a pathbreaking monograph on the state of bisexual representation in both mediums. “Bisexuality was only beginning to be central and recurring, rather than peripheral and episodically one-off or short-lived,” she said over email. “Bisexuality’s representational legibility has been expanded; it’s less easily deniable as ‘just a phase’ when bisexuality becomes an ongoing character trait.”
Broadly speaking, on-screen storytelling has struggled to construct bisexuality in ways that reach beyond the word landing at the butt of jokes or framed through the lens of disgust and abjection. Nowhere does it fail bisexuals more than television, a site of endless discursive possibilities. Television’s long-form narrative offers unique opportunities to watch sexuality unfold over time, but rather than exploring and showcasing every permutation of bisexuality, bi men on television are far and few between.
“Bi+ male representation has always been the biggest challenge,” San Filippo said. “Bisexuality threatens heteropatriarchy and phallic authority, and so must be hidden or, if acknowledged, desexualized and disparaged through mockery or else hypersexualized as in porn (and even then bisexuality is rebranded as ‘gay for pay’).” She said it’s not unlike the uncommon sight of male frontal nudity on screen, which she explores in her 2021 book, Provocauteurs and Provocations. “Dan Levy’s character David on Schitt’s Creek is one high-profile example of recurring, more nuanced male bi+ representation,” she said. “We need more.”
The phallic authority, as San Filippo calls it, is not as threatened when it comes to the representation of bisexual women characters, who were more than double as numerous in the 2021-2022 television season. Nate Shu, a bisexual comedian based in Boston who spoke with me over Zoom, suggests that feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey’s work on patriarchal ideologies in film still applies here. Mulvey’s seminal 1975 essay, “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,” uses a psychoanalytic lens to look at the way women have been depicted in film primarily for the pleasure of the male viewer. She coined this theory the male gaze.
“Lesbian and bisexual characters are more attainable when they’re female because there’s something for male viewers to hold on to,” he said. “A bisexual woman is still an attainable woman to a straight man, whereas a bisexual man is both a threat and an anomaly.”
These conventions are sewn into the fabric of on-screen storytelling, a part of the canon of cinema that queer storytellers are working hard to reform. But despite this hard work, bisexual stories are still too-often made palatable to viewers through a handful of storytelling tropes: the coming out story, reasserting the status quo of a relationship or identity, or hinting at a character’s dishonesty or shiftiness (it pains me to bring it up, but Frank Underwood on House of Cards is a great example here).
The CW’s 2015 musical-dramedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend showcased one of the more fleshed-out bisexual men on television, Darryl Whitefeather, played by Peter Gardner. His unapologetic musical sequence on how he’s “Gettin’ Bi” was an audacious and refreshing moment for a middle-aged character embracing his sexuality—despite his entire storyline being framed around coming out. We tend to see these coming out narratives again and again, to the point where it begins to feel like viewer manipulation. The coming out scene will only lead to the catharsis of Heartbreaker-level tears if it feels earned through a character’s arc of self-suppression and pain. However, the gay blueprint has already been established, and thus the coming out story is relatable and palatable, rather than depicting a character already living their truth.
Shu, who identifies as bisexual and biracial for the sake of alliteration in his comedy (as opposed to pansexual, a term to which he more closely relates), asked me poignant questions: “What is queer representation? Having a character make an off-hand comment and it’s never acknowledged—that is a queer character, but it’s not a queer story.” His ideal bisexual representation allows characters to be authentic people living outside of constructed narratives that are more viewer-friendly like the coming out story. He could only name one example of an Asian bisexual character on television that he felt somewhat seen through—Magnus Bane, played by Harry Shum Jr. on the Freeform supernatural drama Shadowhunters. “It’s tough to get out of the boxes of what culture, film, and TV have defined for decades,” Shu said.
Marvel has been a site of critique around its inability to flesh out queer characters in an authentic way, awkwardly suggesting that all superheroes are heterosexual. The 2021 Disney+ series Loki made headlines for a 20-second scene where the titular character confirms his bisexuality after admitting he has been with princesses and princes in his past. This kind of casual bisexuality has become more commonplace in the streaming era, to the point of forgettability: Bill Pargrave on Killing Eve, playing Eve’s MI5 boss until he was eventually stabbed by murderess Villanelle, also identified as bisexual in a passing conversation. Other examples include Joe MacMillan (Lee Pace) on Halt and Catch Fire and the titular character (Tom Ellis) on Lucifer. Does the off-hand knowledge of a character’s sexual fluidity, without an in-depth exploration of his sexuality, qualify as queer representation? Perhaps a better question would be, does it make bisexual viewers feel seen and understood, and add to monosexual viewers’ understanding and empathy of bisexuality?
At the end of October 2022, Kit Connor came out as bisexual in a bitter tweet after months of being hounded and online bullied by Netflix Heartstopper fans, some of whom accused Connor of queerbaiting for playing a bisexual character. The fall-out made me wonder why any actor, let alone a bisexual actor who may still be processing or figuring out his sexuality, would want to play a bisexual character in the social media age. “I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye,” his tweet read.
Not to center myself in the discourse, but I can’t help but wonder how a more thorough cultural understanding of bisexuality would impact my own dating life as a gay man, what the dating pool might look like if there was a more rigorous acceptance and visibility of bisexuality and fewer “discreet” men refusing to send you photos of their faces on dating apps with fear of being outed in their real life. The latest 2021 Census data coming out of the United Kingdom suggests there are currently nearly as many bisexual-identifying individuals as gay and lesbian survey respondents combined. These numbers feel hopeful, to me. Previous generations grew up dissatisfied by the range of representation on television, leading to iconic shows like Pose that shifted the course of television at the intersections of queerness and race. I can only imagine what the landscape will look like in 10, 20 years as the bisexual-identifying Gen Zs—the queerest generation yet—make their way into creative fields. We’ll have to watch and find out.

To all my fellow bi’s who feel effected by the Kit Connor situation, this is a safe space.
I really wasn’t effected at first. It suck hardcore that Kit was forced to put himself when he clearly didn’t want to but it didn’t feel new. And to be honest, it’s not.
This isn’t a new issue and it’s something that we’ve been addressing for years. So I wasn’t hurt personally when I found out.
But after seeing all the people this effected it feels very personal now.
It’s always annoyed me how some people believe that someone representing queerness has to be queer. Being queer doesn’t make you good at authentically representing the community just as how being cishet doesn’t mean you can’t.
Weither an actor is shouldn’t matter more than their ability to portray the character as accurately as possible.
The actor is not the character
And this is also clear biphobia
A bisexual should not have to fit the stereotypes in order to be bi. And they don’t have to have dated the same gender before just the be considered queer.
And what hurts is that this is coming from our community.
The people who make up these rules and stereotypes are the same people who joined this community for safety.
The reality is that there aren’t strict rules to this. Bisexuals can date whoever the fuck they want (including non-binary) and it can be used as an umbrella term, ace-spec people can have sexual urges, gay people can have dated someone if the opposite sex before, it’s all fluid and based on what makes people feel safe.
Those who try to tell you that your identity is invalid are wrong and you don’t need to listen to them.
Bisexuals have been told they’re invalid for decades from people both inside and outside the community.
You identity is personal and no one should have to share it with anyone else u til they’re comfortable with that.
This whole situation is disgusting but sadly it’s nothing new

Katie's JATP Fic Recs
I have done a few fic rec lists in the past (you can find them here, here, and here, I need to make a master list at some point), but in light of Julie and the Phantoms being canceled, I wanted to highlight some of my favorite JATP fics. Below, and in no particular order, are the fics I keep coming back to and the ones I couldn’t wait to read as they were updated. You can find more under my Julie and the Phantoms fan fiction tag as well. You can also sign the petition to ask Netflix to renew JATP.
It’s Not Sunset Cis Either by WhatsYourNameMan (@wr0temyway0ut) (T, series on AO3, incomplete) If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve definitely seen me talk about this series. I’ve basically decided this is canon now and Netflix can’t tell me otherwise. A truly wonderful AU in which Nick, Luke, Alex, and Reggie are trans men, Willie and Flynn are non-binary, and Julie is gender-fluid. One thing I really love about this series is Rio’s handling of Bobby/Trevor: acknowledging what he did (and giving a reason that's not “he’s a terrible person”), allowing the boys to forgive him, and making him a part of the family again. Bobby is depicted as just as valued and important to Sunset Curve as Alex, Luke, and Reggie, and Bobby and Alex have the sweetest friendship. I also love how Rio writes Willex, specifically Willie and his Caleb trauma. Some of these stories broke my heart (I’m looking at you, Spider Beetle Bee, The Vagabond, Boy on a String, and Dance Dance), but this is still my comfort series and I love it so much.
The Spotlight’s Your Hiding Place by @wr0temyway0ut (NR, SMAU on Tumblr, complete) Enemies-to-lovers modern AU. Nick, Willie, and Bobby are in JATP’s rival band. After discovering that Caleb Covington has been abusing Nick, Willie, and Bobby, JATP comes together to help their rivals escape Caleb’s control. I love all of Rio’s work, but this one is particularly good. I love a good SMAU, and Rio delivers. Full of drama and angst, but also the fluffy moments Rio does so well.
My Safest Place to Hide by @willexxmercer (NR, SMAU on Tumblr, complete) A Willex modern everybody lives/nobody dies AU. When Alex gets sick on their honeymoon, Willie must put his worries about Caleb and the gossip columns aside to take care of him. With Caleb threatening to make Willie’s life worse, Willie learns to lean on his husband and friends and accept their help for once. That was a terrible summary, but I truly love this SMAU. Lots of sweet Willex moments and hating Caleb Covington moments. I also love Kit’s OCs.
Lie a Little Better by @willexxmercer (NR, SMAU on Tumblr, complete) I know…another SMAU. I just love them so much, okay? A Willex modern everybody lives/nobody dies AU. Alex needs a getaway from the hectic Hollywood life, so he goes to a resort in Canada. While there, he falls for Willie Covington, nephew of Caleb Covington, the one person Julie and the Phantoms swore to stay away from. When Caleb finds out about Alex and Willie, well, you can imagine what happens. I love this SMAU because it’s sweet but also suspenseful and keeps you wanting more. Kit is masterful at the cliffhanger and making you really, really hate Caleb Covington. Know That It’s Probably Magic by thessalonike (starblessed) (@julies-butterflies) (T, one-shot on AO3, complete) “A study in grief, loneliness, and the nature of haunting.” Julie thought Alex, Luke, and Reggie were haunting her house, but Flynn might be onto something when she says the boys are haunting Julie. This realization brings Julie’s world crashing down. They can’t be haunting her, right? This fic is beautiful and deep and perfectly written to be emotional without being over the top. There are amazing Double Trouble moments, and Flynn especially is very well-written.
Gave Me No Compasses, Gave Me No Signs by weneedglitter (@weneedglitter) (G, one-shot on AO3, complete) After the Orpheum, Julie discovers her powers go beyond magic hugs, and the bond she has with Alex, Reggie, and Luke is stronger than she thought. This is pretty similar to Know That It’s Probably Magic (it was inspired by that fic), but the premise is just different enough to make it special. I really loved Morgan’s take on the Orpheum and how Julie was able to pull the boys to her.
Heaven Has Got Nothing On Us by fairylightsandrainydays (@fairylightsandrainydays) (T, one-shot on AO3, complete) This is a fascinating take on the relationship between Willie and Caleb Covington. After he dies, Willie realizes he can’t see color. He joins the Hollywood Ghost Club with the promise of getting color back, but soon realizes it’s not at all what he thought it would be. Rainy gives a very interesting take on how and why Willie joined the Hollywood Ghost Club.
I’d Fall Anywhere With You by novaquill (NR, multi-chapter on AO3, complete) Everyone has a soulmate, except for Alex…or at least that’s what he thinks. After the incident with the hot dogs, the boys of Sunset Curve learn that soulmates can be found in unexpected places. I love a good soulmate AU, and this did not disappoint. I loved this fic because it explores the boys of Sunset Curve’s friendship and how best friends can be your soulmates.
Raw Nerves Can’t Kill Me (But God Do They Want To) by HearJessRoar (@hearjessroar) (G, one-shot on AO3) Julie has a bad day, and it’s up to Flynn and the boys to cheer her up. I love Jess’s portrayal of the friendship between Julie and the boys, it’s so sweet and the boys just want to help.
Are You for Me or Against Me (Hold Yourself Against Me) by siriuslyrose (@siriuslyrose) (G, one-shot on AO3, complete) Modern everybody lives/nobody dies AU in which Caleb adopted Willie. Five times Alex thought Caleb hated him, and one time he was proven wrong. I love Mel’s writing, and this does not disappoint. Mel does a great job of integrating Carrie and Bobby into the group and creating the character of good dad Caleb. Also I love Willie’s dog.
How Long Till My Soul Gets It Right by partyghost (Arokel) (G, one-shot on AO3, complete) This is probably my very favorite Willie fic ever. Astronomer!Willie owns my soul. This story gave me Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe vibes (that’s a complement, I love that book). A great insight into Willie’s character and potential backstory.
Give Me Something to Hold On To by sunsetcurbed (@sunsetcurbed) (T, multi-chapter on AO3, complete) Modern everybody lives/nobody dies AU. As Kay puts it, “Alex and Willie meet young, fall in love young, and fall apart young. But some things have a way of making sure they’re meant to be in the end.” I was hesitant on this one at first, because I don’t usually go for friends to lovers to exes back to lovers stories, but Kay’s writing won me over. This story is so well thought-out and beautifully written, and Kay captures the emotions of a break-up perfectly. I think I cried when I read this. As you might expect, it is a sad story, but I promise the end is happy.
Far Away From Hurt Is Where Healing Occurs by chickwiththepurpleguitar (@chickwiththepurpleguitar) (G, one-shot on AO3, complete) After the Orpheum, Julie has to explain to Ray that there are three sort-of-ghosts living in their studio. Luckily, Ray is the best dad ever, but when caring for the boys means forgiving Bobby/Trevor Wilson, Ray finds it a little harder than he expected. Sometimes time really does heal all wounds. I love how Lilly explores the relationship between Bobby/Trevor, Ray, and Rose, as well as the relationships between Luke, Alex, and Reggie and their parents.
First Things First by Irratia (@on-irratia) (NR, one-shot on AO3, complete) Modern everybody lives/nobody dies AU. Three firsts in Alex and Willie’s relationship: meeting the parents, sharing clothes, and sharing a bed. This is a really sweet story and the rest of the series is really good as well. You don’t need to read the first two parts to understand this one.
