Medium: Marble

Genre: Statue

The Baroque movement started in Rome, and Italy became known as the birthplace of the Baroque. Despite this, the majority of the Italian Rococo were Italian artists who trained outside of Italy.

During the 18th century, Italy felt that England and France had left them behind and the country was in a state of decline. This lead to much of the art being heavily religious and had nothing o say about the upper class. We will see that in places like England and France didn’t always stay quite on their opinions on the aristocracy in their art. (William Hogarth and Jean-Honore Fragard)

As stated in the text book “Rococo” by Victoria Charles and Klaus H. Carl, “In Italy, the supports of the Baroque were the might of the aristocracy and the supremacy of the clergy. Those in power needed the supporting external pomp in manners, dress and architecture to underline their despotic position.

the statue above is (possibly) an example of such religious art.

Virtual Sketchbook #3

My chosen artwork from The Ringling Museum of Art is Pausias and Glycera by Peter Paul Rubens and Osias Beert. This is an oil on canvas painting measuring about 203.2cm x 194.3cm. The artist has mainly depicted organic shapes and used tints/shades of red and blue in this artwork. The main subjects of this painting is Pausias and Glycerin. Pausias was a Greek artist during the fourth century who was in love with Glycera, a townswoman. In this painting Pausias, who is depicted wearing a cloudy blue gown, is seated on the left side of Gylcera, who is portrayed wearing a red and beige gown, with his arm on her shoulder. He seems to be showing Glycera something is the distance. On the right side of Glycera there is a floral arrangement on a small table along with a basket of flowers on the ground. The artist makes use of detailed brushwork which is evident by the attention to detail in the clothing, facial expressions of the subjects, and the flowers. This painting would be considered balanced because the subjects are placed in the middle creating a sense of equilibrium. Additionally, the background is simple and doesn't have much detail, thus bringing attention to the subjects in the middle. The emphasis in this painting is on the subjects, Pausias and Glycera, which is created by the proportion that create a sense of balance and harmony within the artwork. In addition, a sense of rhythm is established through the flowy lines used for the drapery/gown and the subjects poses. There is not much contrast in this painting as there is only a subtle contrast in lighting/shadows.

I believe this painting evokes a romantic feeling. This is because it portrays an intimate moment between Pausias and Glycera and most people can relate to having an intimate moment with their significant other. I also think it evokes a sense of nostalgia because it depicts what love was like in the earlier centuries, where it seemed more pure in contrast to the "hook-up" culture that we have in today's generation. This "old love" is portrayed by subjects sitting next to each other with a loving look and just seeming to appreciate the something in the distance and the flowers also adds to the romantic feel of the painting.

This painting is associated with Flemish Baroque era. This is reflected through the expressive poses of the figures as well as the muscularity of the figures. There is also a sense of realism in the depiction of the figures and the flowers which contribute the Baroque ideals. This sense of realism is attained by the detailed brushwork of the flowers, the facial expressions, and the clothing/drapery. The artwork portrays the artists as people who pays attention to little details and focuses on making them look perfect so that the overall artwork as a sense of realism. By looking at the painting you can tell the artist is trying to convey the theme of love between two people. I believe the artist gets this message across by the positioning of the figures and their facial expression/body language.

I believe this painting contributes to the knowledge of Greek mythology, as it depicts a scene of the love between a Greek painter and a Greek townswoman. I think this painting is very interesting because it focuses on romantic love. During the time period the painting was made, the 17th century, most marriages/love was based on economic, political, or social reason, so I think it was interesting that the artist depicted true/pure love between two people. I mainly choose this painting because the theme of love interests me a lot.

fire. he's able to start it, besides dominating and bending it over to his own will. sometimes uses it for (partial) evil and more. being the anti hero i think he is, i would LOVE to see lucas playing with fire while delivering a speech that instigates the good guy in front of him. in a cool, well cut, all black suit with just one (1) red scarf on the lapel, or his neck, he would look amazing sending blazes everywhere! i even have a song for him: play with fire. aaaah the idea of lucas and fire sends me to heaven, hell, purgatory and back! he can be like tuxedo mask, regarding how he annoys everyone with his smugness.

gary

colossus. strength and possibility of turning into a dense metal at will? gary is perfect for it! he has the body shape and weight, and the skills for the maintenance. picture this: you walk down the hallway to go to the bathroom, only to hear him moaning in there. you're uncomfortable, thinking the worst, only to open the door and see him oiling his joints and almost falling on the floor. "a little help? i can't reach some places..." please, give me metal body gary, it would clear all my trauma! plus, as he is in the villa, he would exercise his comic relief role.

brainiac with technology/time bending. (@lasswithumor's idea for 'time' makes me smile! thank you for the inspo!) not actual brainiac from dc though, let me explain. i always get the sense carl could be tony stark or bruce wayne, minus the assholery. he's much humbler and quiet, but still very capable. as for time bending being his power, it could make him overcome this sense of running out of time he always seems to have. he might have a hardship about it because he never seems to find a balance, so this skill is probably the only thing he could actually be good at, and benefit from.

noah

talking to the dead, like klaus hargreeves. something i would love to see is how tormented he would be while it happens. distressed noah is a beautiful concept, and part of the reason why he would be such a troubled character. picture this: he uses those people to fight in exchange of favors, like finding out who killed them, or to tell their families how peaceful they are now, among other things. noah and ghosts ring different to me, and the thought of him being troubled? even more! not like klaus, but definitely close to that. i love that "short temper" side of him, and in this context, it would be perfect. plus, his looks being similar to something from the 1920's, without the hat. so white shirt, suspenders, dark brown pants. ugh, he would look so good in it!

vines and plant banding, like layla williams in sky high. there's no other answer for him. i thought about making him avalanche, from x men, but i see him more connected to plants than any other element of nature. the way he would smirk and grow a small vine around his pinky while talking about a brilliant idea he just had? PLEASE. GIVE - IT - TO - ME, I LIVE FOR SMUG HENRIK! and you can be damn sure his looks would include this ponytail, by @juggalohenrik.

kassam

at first i thought invisibility, because of his personality and how he behaves in groups, but then it hit me, supersonic scream. he can take his frustrations out on a single booming scream and be done with it. i would love to see kassam being teased and beat up, only to get up from the ground, scrapes all over, bloody nose, only to position himself and close his fists to focus, before delivering a resounding scream to round it up real nicely. that's definitely a power he would find useful and excels in. the visuals definitely don't hurt either!

bobby

he's a very peculiar boy, and so his powers would have to be too. it might sound crazy, but hear me out! laughter inducement. the power itself can cause the person to laugh so hard, eventually the air is expelled from their lungs and they have quite the death! it's gruesome and i love it, it's the perfect juxtaposition between it and bobby's personality that is so bubbly. picture this: battlefield, gary smugly says "i guess that's the only way you could make someone laugh." to which bobby replies with a laugh "including you, tin can" while making colossus!gary laugh and fall on the floor because of it. it might require lots of energy, so bobby can't always cause mass laughter, just like in the villa... jk jk jk! i just know his uniform would be clown like, before priya adjusted to a beautiful dark teal piece. before that? goofy pink mask and cape with sprinkles, and tights everywhere else. he would also be the type of hero that is a comic relief. ironically, in this case.

lottie

rogue. the power and the visuals fit in so well! sucking up someone's power and/or energy SCREAMS lottie's personality all over! if i could adjust it so the girl doesn't manifest it unless she wants to, that's even better. lottie with dark hair and a streak of platinum, or the opposite, would look another level and i'm here for it! plus, the gloves... AAAAH THE GLOVES. she would smirk before taking them off and turning that grin into a determined smug expression before touching her enemy. PLEASE!

priya

TURNING - PEOPLE - INTO - GOLD. i said what i said. similar to medusa's power of turning people into stone. flowy dresses for the goddess looks, a smirk on her lips while she does it, and golden shiny eyes that glow bright when she throws her gold curse upon her enemy! she's goofy, so you know she has a cheesy catchphrase, but i can't think of anything right now. it's there, i just need to find it.

hope

mind control. CAN I JUST SAY? she practically has that power already. being persuasive and having the power of negotiation the way she already does would fit in perfectly. and if i may add, storm looks like the uniform and the "bright white eyes" while it happens???also! hope as the person who plans the attacks and defense.

marisol

persuasion. similar to allison hargreeves. one word and they will do it. at first i considered super strength, for being so unexpected to someone that petit, but if you account for her personality, persuasion as a super power is so much cooler! plus, she doesn't have to try hard, the seed of argumentation is already there. in her origin story you could have marisol having a moral grey area where she debates whether or not using those powers in court. i would love to see this dilemma and her going through it, since there's a clear distinction in what she considers right and wrong, and the ethically correct options to choose. as looks go, all she needs is a suit, similar to the prom one, and definitely a ponytail and gloves.

ibrahim.

flying and speed. something about rahim screams traditional super hero persona and i can't help but stir into it. he's perfect for the superman alter ego, the one that talks about justice and fights the big guy for the little ones. rahim has a way of going around and making people's lives better, at least that's how i see him. i asked for @itsrealityboo 's approval about this, because you know, she's the authority on golf boy, and she added something really cool that i hadn't thought about: "I will say that I could definitely see Rahim as a part of a team tho, like the fantastic four! I think because of his insecurities, he’s need some type of support system or even older mentor. He’d definitely go through that awkward phase of learning how to manage his powers if he wasn’t born with them lol"

i definitely agree after reading it, it makes so much sense! i don't know if that need comes from being the younger brother, or having those expectations at home (about being suave and all) but that would for sure be a part of his origin story as a superhero.

Besonders bei Künstlern, Schriftstellern, Musikern und Schauspielern kämen sicherlich noch viel mehr bewundernswerte Menschen zusammen, die mein Leben mitbegleitet haben. Bei den eher unbekannten Namen habe ich die Funktion in Klammern daneben geschrieben. Einige Namen sind Legendengestalten oder biblische Figuren, zum Beispiel Heilige (HL). Menschen, die ich zum Beispiel während meiner Zeit als Redakteur oder anderwärtig persönlich kennen gelernt habe, sind zum Beispiel auf der Tumblr-Seite fett gekennzeichnet. My notes on tua season 2 (spoilers)

Can not believe that Hazel died. I thought he deserved better than to die in the first five minutes after everything he’s done. I also can’t believe Agnes died!! Kind of makes sense tho if they had 20 years together

The swedes really confused/disturbed me. That scene they were playing with the knives he barely reacted when he got stabbed.

Lila deserves a better family. The abuse from the handler was so obvious to anyone outside the situation but not to Lila.

When five was first fighting Lila in the warehouse I actually thought that it was weird she kept disappearing (obviously I know why but I’ll touch on that later).

Luther really calmed down this season (in my opinion) he no longer thought he was batter than everyone which is good, and his confrontation with Reginald may have helped that.

Diego. He is so much more powerful than I thought (and I think what he was told) when he stopped the bullets in the final episode it’s clear that Reginald kept it secret from him(he seemed very surprised) I think is ability is actually bending metal, which could be explored more if the series continues.

I’m glad Allison kept her ability, and I’m also so happy she found someone that she really liked that wasn’t her sibling (you can fight me, it was incest). I’m curious as to why it has to be “I heard a rumour” it may have been a way for her to focus her power, but it would be interesting if she could learn to do this non verbally or with different words

I felt so bad for Klaus with the Dave situation because it would have killed him when Dave didn’t recognise him and honestly I love klaus so I felt really bad. I’m not surprised he started a cult because that is very much a Klaus thing to do. And it’s good to see his posts grow as he got sober.

Where do I even begin with five. When he took the assignment from the handler I could tell he was kind of antsy about it, when he got there he seemed very nervous, even saying that being lucky was dying at the right time (not those exact words but you get the point). It also broke my heart when he said “I never enjoyed the killing”. This is kind of unrelated but im glad five was the one who got the line “fuckin’ fudge nutter” because it was my favourite quote of the whole series. Five also seems to care about Vanya the most, being much kinder when he was talking to her than any of the other siblings. His ability to turn back time a few seconds was also amazing because it saved everyone. Also seeing both the fives together was hilarious. This paragraph is kind of all over the place but basically, I love five and he’s been thru some shit to save everyone

More of Ben!!! He was so cute when he possessed klaus and walked around and stuff I was so glad he got to see everything thru the loving again. M y H e a r t when he was laying in the dirt. I’m glad he stood up to Klaus about how he felt, and his sacrifice was kind of bittersweet because he was able to talk to vanya (so cute) but he was finally able to move one without being afraid to go. His funeral scene was really sad, but given everything Reginald (I fucking hate this dude but I’ll write a paragraph later) said I can assume that he was killed by someone else on a mission.

VANYA AND SISSY JUST AAAAA so good. They would have been better parents to Harlen than Carl could ever dream of (Carl was an asshole). I was so happy that they got together and so happy that Vanya was finally able to trust someone and be happy. I knew that vanya was powerful but I had not idea. She used her powers to float, bring back harlen and she was in so much better control now. The scene where she was being tortured and got her repressed memories back broke my heart, especially when she said “I don’t deserve to live.” I’m glad that Ben was there to talk to her tho because he’s clearly a sweetheart. She seemed so much more confident in herself and her abilities as well, and I think the time on the farm really gave her confidence. Also the scene where she said “who I am is not a disease” was freaking phenomenal I just can’t deal with it (this is coming from a very not straight person 😅)

What the ever loving fuck was Reginald. Dude is apart of a secret society, I mean I get it. Cared about a monkey more than he loved his children, predictable. But then this motherucker rips off his skin suit and kills a bunch of people. It kind of explains the scene with him and grace on the moon tho. So like he’s an alien? Did he cause the children to be born? Also fuck him for bringing Diego’s stutter back

Lila was an awesome character and deserved more than the emotional abuse the handler gave her. She is clearly very powerful, and it also means that there are others out there, and the handler may have collected them and killed them when she found a more powerful one.

The end scene was so interesting because I know they fucked up the timeline with everything, and Harlen clearly kept his powers, and maybe founded the umbrella (now sparrow) academy. I wonder what will happen from here, because they may have erased their own existence, and it appeared they went back to 2019 but they were still kids? Did they not go far enough or did something bad happen?

Anyway if you read all that I’m sorry it was so long I just needed to talk about it because none of my friends have watched it yet and I need to express my emotions at how good it was.

They meet at city hall just after midday.

Lila worked a half day shift and Diego had already been out of the flat when she got up. She doesn’t know where he’d gone, but now he’s strolling down the pavement to where she’s waiting for him outside the building with a thick folder under his arm.

“Shit, how many documents did you bring? I thought all they needed was a passport and birth certificate? Did I forget something?” Lila asks hurriedly, already rummaging through her tote bag, half hoping she’ll unearth some missing documents that she accidentally packed in without realising it.

“Huh?” asks Diego as he stops in front of her, “Oh no, I brought some work, I kinda assume we’re going to be in there a while.”

Lila looks up at him in annoyance but the angry complaint about how he didn’t warn her and therefore she didn’t bring anything to keep herself busy dies on her tongue as she realises, she’s never really seen Diego out and about before. But here he is, looking confident and like he belongs, in a way she doesn’t really, with his brown skin, dark hair, mahogany coloured bomber jacket, and black pants all warm and earthy, creating a complete contrast to the gray cityscape and sky.

Taken aback by how quickly her anger melts away, and not quite sure why, Lila just turns towards the steps of the building in a huff of mild embarrassment for how irrational she’s being.

Inside, Diego takes a number and sits down on one of the uncomfortable looking wooden benches at the back of the waiting area, and after giving the space and the smattering of people in it a cursory look, Lila decides that there clearly isn’t a better alternative, so she settles in next to him.

For a little while, she tries not to let the boredom get to her, but it’s quite hard, especially considering that she also doesn’t want to let her mind wander to what she and Diego are about to do. It’s not like Lila’s trying to repress the idea that she’s taking the necessary steps to get married to him very soon, it’s just that she’s very strenuously avoiding actually thinking about it too hard. She’s not too sure why this is the balance she has decided to strike and can apparently live with, but knowing her and Diego will be married, in those words, that’s okay. Thinking about what that entails and what it means, instantly makes her heart rate spike in so many different and indescribable ways, that she’d rather not touch that thought.

So she starts nibbling on her nails. But very quickly she has a niggling memory of her mother chastising her, grabbing her wrist firmly and saying, Stop that, you’ll end up looking like some trailer park hussie!

Irritated she pulls her finger out from between her teeth and folds her hands in her lap and starts bouncing her knee instead.

After a little while she notices that Diego who, she registered out of the corner of her eyes, was leafing through his file, has gone still beside her. She turns to look at what's up and is startled by the way he’s watching her intently. For a moment his eyes bore into hers and they are so close that shadows of memories of Diego leaning in to kiss her lips, her neck, and all the way down her body right after looking at her like that play out before her mind's eye, but then he says something and Lila feels completely foolish when she has to say, “Sorry?” in a small voice to get him to repeat what he said.

“I asked if you’re nervous,” Diego says in a very gentle voice, one, she presumes, he would probably use if he were dealing with a skittish animal.

Lila feels like this situation can’t get any worse, but just as she’s pulled herself together and is about to scoff at him, Diego goes on in a very serious tone, “Lila, we don’t have to do this if you don’t want to! And if you’re worried about taking back the money, don’t be! I’m not cashing that cheque till you get your visa, okay? You don’t owe me anything.”

This is just too much, so Lila shakes her head, mostly so she can close her eyes and doesn’t have to look at how sincere he’s being, or at the deep, brown softness of his eyes, and says, “I’m not nervous, Diego, I’m just fucking bored!”

“Oh… uh… right,” Diego answers a bit sheepishly and now Lila feels guilty for apparently making him feel awkward. So again she’s just about to speak, tell him, she appreciates his concern all the same, when Diego gets there faster than her once more and flips open his file again while saying, “Uh... if you want... but you really don’t have to, just it might keep you occupied—” he cuts himself off when she levels a raised eyebrow at him, expectantly, “You can help me look through these files,” he finally finishes, holding roughly half the stack of papers that he was going through out to her.

They are searching for a name. It’s barely any less boring than sitting around doing nothing. It’s just a seemingly endless list of unalphabetised names with addresses, a copy of a magazine subscriber list from the 60s. Diego’s apparently helping some genealogist with a project and though he agrees with her that it’s a bit tedious, he also argues that he is apparently being paid very good money.

For a long while they just sit in bored, if oddly comfortable silence, while searching through the names until Lila breaks the stillness, “I got him!”

She’s weirdly excited as she leans over to Diego with her page, finger just under the name Carl Cooper written in slightly faded typewriter letters.

“Show me?” Diego says reaching for the page but not pulling it out of Lila’s grip, they’re hands brushing as he tries to take a closer look at the corresponding address and Lila is suddenly very aware of the warmth radiating off of his body as he leans in so very close to her. She thinks she can even smell his soap.

“That’s our guy!” Diego says delightedly, picking up the biro he’d clipped to his folder and circling the name before taking the piece of paper gently out of her hand and smiling at her, the corners of his eyes crinkling distractingly. “Thanks!” he says with genuine gratitude.

“Yeah, whatever,” Lila grumbles, but she’s not able to hide the smile in her own voice, so to gloss over it, she asks instead, “Is your work always this boring?”

She almost regrets asking him instantly, because only the other night she got to see what it’s like when it’s less boring, but Diego leans his head back against the wall and his expression turns contemplative.

“Well, no… I mean, I guess, some parts are this boring. A lot of looking through files or going on stakeouts in my car. This one, yeah, this was tedious, but usually this kind of work is all part of the bigger puzzle I’m trying to solve. And then, when I get to find the people I’m looking for, it makes it all worth it, you know? Sometimes that’s loved ones who got separated somehow. Totally worth a couple of hours slogging through some files.”

He’s looking down at her, head still tilted against the wall behind them and Lila finds she can’t look away but also hasn’t got anything to say about what he’s telling her. She never took any interest in what a detective does, wasn’t even really ever into cop or detective shows, but somehow, the way Diego tells it, it’s quite fascinating.

“I’ve got a knack for finding asshole dads who are trying to get out of paying alimony as well. Definitely less noble work, but also necessary, if you ask me. And those often end up being the least boring of my cases,” Diego goes on and Lila wonders whether he’s just trying to keep her entertained now that they have no more files to search through. “ ‘s how I got this,” he says, pointing a finger up towards the scar in his eyebrow.

“Oh yeah?” Lila asks, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible about it.

She’s been massively intrigued by all of his scars, but at no point has she felt in a position to ask. Afterall, what if there’s a really traumatic story behind them. But he has a bunch of them. There’s the one in his brow and another behind his left ear. One on the top of his left arm, and one more on his right hip. Lila quickly stops thinking about that one and why she could trace it exactly on a piece of paper if she were given something to draw with, and also doesn’t think too hard about the long scar that reaches from his cheek all the way along the side of his head above his ear. Lila is genuinely a bit wary of what the story might be behind that one.

But she quickly draws her thoughts back to the present and the fact that Diego seems happy to tell her about the scar in his brow and so she asks, “What happened?”

“Asshole father who didn’t want to pay his alimony,” Diego offers with a light chuckle and a shrug, “Fucker faked his own death and then when I found him, I’d barely said a word before he smashed a bottle in my face. Apparently I was lucky I didn’t lose an eye.”

Lila hisses in sympathy at the image.

“Guess we’ll have to talk a bit more about shit like that before our interview with immigration,” Diego says casually and Lila looks at him quizzically as she’s not quite sure what he’s talking about. “Interview?” she asks.

“Yeah, we’ll have to do an interview to prove that this is not just a sham wedding,” he starts explaining, brows drawn together, then his eyes drift off to the side, “Lila, did you not know that they’re gonna want to see proof we’re, like, actually married? … Shit! Our numbers up! Come on, let's go!”

Diego touches her elbow gently and Lila follows him in a bit of a daze, not to one of the windows that are situated all along the long hall that they walk down, but to a small office that they are ushered into by an equally small man, who asks them to sit in the two chairs opposite his desk.

The next fifteen minutes during which they go through all of the proceedings of applying for a marriage license do nothing to settle her nerves, because again she’s getting to see another completely new side to Diego. She guesses this is what he’s like when he’s really on the job and considering how good he is, she misses half a minute of conversation wondering why his business is failing.

He’s commanding, not letting anything slide, but he’s endlessly cool and charming all the same. And for a second Lila is concerned it’s just the fact that she’s slept with him and maybe in this moment would like to sleep with him again that’s making her see him in this way, but she notices that the clerk they’re dealing with seems at least as flustered and is hanging off every word Diego says as much as Lila.

At one point she almost jumps when he confidently takes her hand out of her lap, laces their fingers together, and says, “We were planning on getting married next year but circumstances have changed and my girlfriend can’t continue her degree, so now her visa’s running out and we discussed it and decided to pull the wedding forward, we didn’t want to end up getting separated by this!”

The clerk nods understandingly and Lila could kick herself for not having put even a fraction of the amount of thought into their plan as Diego seems to have. It’s brilliant. This explanation for why they need a license now is believable but also contains enough of the truth that they have very little to prove at this point, except for the fact that they are, indeed, in a relationship.

At that thought, Lila’s heart skips a beat and her focus zeros in on their joined hands for a moment.

When they are walking down the steps after all the application forms have been sorted, Diego offers to give her a lift home, but Lila makes up an engagement with a friend on the spot and quickly heads away in the direction of the bus stop. She needs some time to clear her head after that whole experience.

Diego gets into his car, lets out a very long breath, and then tips forward, pressing his forehead against the steering wheel in frustrated exhaustion.

How can hanging out with one person be both something that is so enjoyable and so painful at the same time?

Lila was fun and sparkly as ever, but she also helped him out, took an interest in his job. And even if that was mostly out of politeness, she asked all the right questions and listened so attentively. And, god, her beautiful, lively face is so distracting, he hardly knew where to look.

Diego’s certain now that he is royally screwed. He’s done a lot of dumb shit in his life, but this takes the cake. Spending time with Lila is so fucking close to the real deal and within the next couple of weeks they will be married, and he thinks, maybe a bit overdramatically, this’ll probably be the death of him.

He sits back up straight, turns the key in the ignition, and moves his car into traffic.

But he can’t back out now, they’ve actually put their plan in motion, and Lila is relying on him to get it together, so the very last thing he wants to do is let her down. Even if it kills him, he mentally adds with a wry smile.
