"For the past nine months, I’ve heard from a fair number of people, including people close to me and people I’ve worked with, say they don’t want anything to do with Hasbro, WOTC, or D&D. Unfortunately, they’re piling all of 5e in there too. 5e isn’t D&D. Since its release into the Creative Commons by two different companies, 5e is now an open system supported by hundreds of publishers and, in some cases, with whole games built around it. 5e is now and forever an independent tabletop roleplaying platform not tied to any single company. If someone doesn’t like 5e as a system, that’s totally fine. Not every system is for everyone. I know many who love the tactical crunchiness and character customization of Pathfinder 2. I know many others who love the fast and furious grim dark fantasy of old-school games like Shadowdark, EZD6, and Old School Essentials. That’s cool. Likewise, if you’re happy with D&D and don’t want or need anything else, that’s cool too. Most D&D players probably never consider products outside of what WOTC produces for D&D. I definitely recommend looking at the many awesome D&D / 5e compatible products many other publishers have created. Here are ten notable products for 2022 and my YouTube video segment on favorite products of 2023, all from other publishers than WOTC. Check them out. If you enjoy 5e but you’re done with Hasbro or WOTC or the D&D brand, this message is for you. 5e isn’t D&D. You can enjoy the hell out of 5e without having to use any products or pay any money to Hasbro. There are several excellent alternative core books for 5e – my current favorite being EN Publishing’s Level Up Advanced 5e and more on the way like Kobold Press’s Tales of the Valiant. These companies pay no license fees to Hasbro. Their work is completely independent from D&D. In A5e’s case, they have their own system reference document they wrote and released under a Creative Commons license that’s significantly bigger than the 5.1 SRD. These systems and products are completely independent from Hasbro or WOTC or D&D. 5e's rules were built by designers, many of whom aren't at Hasbro anymore, based on principles that go back 50 years and two full company acquisitions ago. Yes, 5e came from the development of the 2014 version of D&D. 5e stands for “5th edition” and that’s the 5th edition of D&D, but that doesn’t matter now. Now, all of the mechanics are released under a Creative Commons license and, as mentioned, there’s a whole separate one you can use instead if you don’t want to use the one published by WOTC. If you love 5e, as I do, don’t throw it out just because you’re mad at one company publishing material for it. 5e is ours and I personally think it’s awesome. You’re not hurting anyone or supporting the wrong group by buing products for it, running it, and playing it. Game on."

I am no longer working on 5e content, BUT!
So, an amount of time has passed and a number of things have occurred which, skipping past the gory details, has led me to no longer working on content for 5th edition D&D. This sounds like a travesty, but it has given me time to direct that passion elsewhere, an elsewhere which may or may not be relevant to you, so if you would join me for a moment, allow me to take you on a trip back in time for some context.
Tumblr media
A few years back, I was fresh off a long-running campaign with some friends and looking for something new to do. I had been running games in vallonde for years and, as much as I love the setting, I needed a vacation from my son, so to speak.
I was in the process of streaming a playthrough of Ogre Battle 64 and thought "Hey, I really love these games and the setting, why not put some effort into making a little setting guide and running an Ogre Battle campaign?" Sounds great, right? Lots of politics, nuanced heroes, villains both relatable and cartoonish...I really could go on about OB forever but I'm going to refrain because that's not what this is about. What it IS about is boring historical events concerning this specific nobody, and in this specific case I spent maybe 2(ish?) weeks combing the internet for everything I could find related to Ogre Battle: Characters, nations, cities, classes, calendars, timelines, and so on, until I had a pretty extensive catalog of content I could start turning into plots and adventures. This was all going really well, and had a lot of promise, until random happenstance caused me to lose it all.
Now I had to make a decision. Did I want to go back to square 1 and start all over again, or did I want to just give up? Apparently the answer was neither because in that moment I had a thought: Why was I putting so much work into collecting all this information and twisting the 5e mechanics into some crazy shape they were never meant to be in when I could just make my own game? At first it was mostly just an itch in the back of my mind but eventually I say down to see if I could reasonably pull of what I wanted, which was essentially a tabletop game built specifically for Ogre Battle games, which utilized the mechanics found throughout the games, as well as things like classes and monsters. After working over some basic designs, I finished the rules for the combat system and knew there was a game hidden inside this idea.
Tumblr media
Let's go ahead and bring it back to the present day. I never actually stopped working on content, I've just put all of that time into developing a game of my own design. In that time, I've gone through multiple iterations of a game that has grown far beyond its original aspirations as well as its design as an Ogre Battle TTRPG into something I'm excited to call my own. The project now goes by the name Celestial Solstice and is, more-or-less, done. It's really hard for me to describe the game's focus, but let me try to lay out what makes it special:
A truly balanced pillar trio: The game is built to make every theoretical playstyle a viable path toward advancement. Battle, exploration, and social content all hold the capacity for meaningful advancement.
A game of procedures: Taking a note from the mechanical procedures of older TTRPGs and select board games, Celestial Solstice uses closed, ordered feedback loops to organize the gameplay experience. All three gameplay pillars get their own unique style of play which is supported with character options.
No character limits: There are a massive amount of character options for people who love building characters. A three-tier job system with a total of 6 tier 1 jobs, 12 tier 2 jobs, and 12 tier 3 jobs means you can mix and match to create your own unique class. There are no character levels, and players instead buy character upgrades using EXP they earn for overcoming challenges. These EXP can be used to upgrade attributes, buy new features, and acquire and improve skills.
Gathering & Crafting: A large amount of focus on gone into incorporating gathering of raw materials and the crafting of those raw materials into usable items into the game. Forestry pairs with woodworking, herbalism with alchemy, mining with blacksmithing, and skinning with leatherworking to give players a wide assortment of options whether they want to do some crafting on the side or dedicate their entire character to the concept. There's also a system for enchanting items with magical effects which KINDA counts as crafting, right?
Control an army: The game is designed from the ground up for the recruitment of NPCs as well as the hiring of retainers, mercenaries, and employees. Recruit up to 50 characters which can participate in the game just like PCs do, going on adventures, gaining EXP, and improving over time. There's also a whole player-owned base mechanic which acts as the home for your ever-growing army.
A unique, fast-paced battle system: The battle system is modeled after the unit grid based system found in Ogre Battle 64. Emphasis is placed on battles that resolve quickly to prevent burnout yet allow players to roll lots of dice and make strategic decisions that matter. In this system, strategic unit placement is just as important as good dice rolls.
It's a point crawl system!
Random generation tables EVERYWHERE!
And honestly much more!
Tumblr media
This are no plans for this to be a commercial project, at least not any time soon, but with that said it is technically a playable, complete game that is being iterated and improved upon over time. At the end of the day, I'm writing this post as a stupidly long-winded way to ask: Would anyone here be interested in seeing this blog turn into something dedicated to my personal TTRPG system? It's never going to be a 5e blog again, but I'd hate to let it wither away to nothing after such a long history. If so I'll start making posts describing the mechanics of my system and giving behind the scenes looks at how and why some of the design decisions were made, but I understand if people aren't interested in following a project they can't incorporate into the own games. Lemme know, cause I like you guys and would love to share this project that has become so close to me, but I get it, it is what it is lol.
Thanks for reading, and good gaming regardless!

Lots of interesting stuff on Bundle of Holding right now!
Aquelarre, a classic Spanish fantasy RPG set in medieval Iberia with magical and supernatural elements. I am not familiar with it, but the presentation and vibes are immaculate.
HackMaster, a very crunchy old-school D&D clone that I think could be best characterized as a different evolutionary branch from AD&D 2e, especially the Player's Options rules. Very crunchy, meticulously detailed, full of really cool ideas.
Level Up, one of the more interesting D&D 5e offshoots out there: does a lot more than just present 5e compatible rules with some new mechanics, but is in many ways a massive overhaul. Great if you like D&D 5e but would like more character customization and better GM tools.
And finally, Troika!, a really weird science fantasy RPG with whimsical surrealist vibes. It's one of those games where the rules are in many ways baroque on purpose but them being like that actually accentuates the weirdness of the setting as well. A lot of fun to play.

Dungeons: The Dragons
What if Dungeons & Dragons was a Storytelling game in the vein of Vampire: The Requiem and such?
Obviously it would still be about adventurers going into dungeons to get loot, but with a new Chronicles of Darknessy twist. Why Storytelling instead of Storyteller, you might ask? Because the more formulaic structure of the former makes this easier, basically. Let's go!
So one of the things I struggled with while coming up with this was what the Inherent Type would be (see: Clan, Auspice, Path). The obvious answer might be race, but that didn't quite sit right with me. For one thing I wanted there to be an element of transformation, like a normal person can become an adventurer, and suddenly becoming an elf would be a bit weird. So by default your adventurers are humans who go through some transformation to become adventures. And my bestie @thydungeonguy finally cracked it when I was wondering what the obligatory skull logo would be like and he said "dragon skull." So it clicked: an adventurer has become infused with a dragon soul or something, and the five inherent types map to the five metallic dragons!
So next we have the Joined Type (see: Covenant, Tribe, Order), and this one was a lot easier. Going with classes was a bit too boring, so I just stole the five factions from 5th Edition, which can still serve to give you class-like abilities (evil-smiting abilities from the Order of the Gauntlet, for example).
Then there's the basic Powers (see: Disciplines, Gifts, Arcana). I think these come from the draconic type, with factions working more like the Covenants in Vampire where they can teach you miscalleanous skills like sorcery. I haven't figured out any particulars, including what to call these.
Onto the Power Stat (see: Blood Potency, Primal Urge, Gnosis). This is just Level, right? Like, you all agree this one should be called Level? Moving on.
The Morality/Integrity Stat (see: Humanity, Harmony, Wisdom) is a measure of how close you are to a Normal Man. The lower it goes, the more removed you are from being able to associate with people who have normal jobs instead of risking their lives going into dungeons for loot. If it's at 10, you can't actually go into dungeons. If it's at 0, they won't let you back into town, you're just too dungeonpilled now. Don't know what to call this. Normalcy, maybe?
There's also the Resource Stat (see: Vitae, Essence, Mana). I think here we have to depart from the usual formulas a bit and, instead of giving characters a pool of points to use, give them spell slots! Maybe even call them that, in which case the powers would be called Spells.
The Advanced Types (see: Bloodline, Lodge, Legacy) are Prestige Classes, which are called that even though there technically aren't classes.
Tell me what you think, and suggest names for the stuff I haven't named yet!

Since posting the results of the healing spell poll, something's been bugging me: would D&D settings besides Dark Sun develop CPR?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation requires an understanding of cardiology and the pulmonary system. These are not givens. To understand how the body works, you need to practice dissection. There is a taboo against handling and dismembering corpses in almost every culture; it took other pressures in favor of scientific advancement to get past these taboos and to a basis for medicine beyond basic pharmacology ("this plant does this to people!"). Even the germ theory of disease took centuries to gain sway after its inception.
This is partially because of how humans treat tradition and partially other biases.
But if you have a competing mechanism for healing which doesn't require elaborate bodies of knowledge, would you ever develop those bodies of knowledge? We're not talking isolated scholars with obsessions or hyperfixations, we're talking societies creating repositories of knowledge and establishments that support the creation of further knowledge.
To put it another way: you can't make a Heal/Medicine check to use CPR if the only record of CPR is in a dusty tome written by someone called "the Mad" 300 years before you were born, which is now either shelved in some collector's library of rare books or else at the bottom of a dungeon, in either case forgotten. The knowledge has to be transmitted. And if you have revivify available, it's not going to be.
"But revivify is a powerful spell! It's hardly common!"
In which universe are you playing?
Greyhawk is the standard for magic levels in D&D, as it has been since it got adopted as the standard setting. It's not low-magic by any stretch of the imagination. 5th-level characters are all over, so revivify should be fairly common.
Forgotten Realms has always been high magic and it's the current standard setting. (5e players are probably unfamiliar with the setting's earned description in earlier editions: "Pick up a rock: +2 AC! Pick up another rock: +1 on saves vs. poison!") You can expect revivify to be in wide use in the Realms. The same should be true of any other setting in Toril (Al-Qadim, Kara-Tur, Maztica, etc.).
Eberron was supposed to be low-level but magic-pervasive, which didn't quite work out. Canonically, high-level characters are few and far between; mechanically, there's a lot of Eberron-specific material that requires high-level play. Revivify could easily appear on a Lesser Mark of Healing, given what else appears on Lesser marks. The Lesser dragonmarks aren't that rare, either; each of the guilds/houses is built around their use.
This raises other questions about how the presence of magic might dampen (or enhance) the progress of knowledge in any given field, but I'll leave it at just healing magic. How much would we know and not know about medicine if we could cure diseases and mend wounds through faith in the gods alone?

Guild Member Next Door (kinda) translation - part 2
(You can find part 1 here https://www.tumblr.com/sic-fayl/762533305708052480/disclaimer-this-is-part-1-of-a-freestyled if you'd like!)
Disclaimer, as always: This is based on an MTL translation, I do not know Korean myself, I am trying more to stick with the impressions/vibes of a sentence instead of a strict word-for-word meaning - and most importantly, this is only for fun.
Now let's get into it:
It was almost a year ago that his relationship with this ‘Business Partner’ began. It didn’t start out particularly friendly, and even along the way, it sometimes became a bit rocky again. And all of that was putting it nicely.
Yeo-woon had always liked games, ever since elementary school. It started with him secretly taking coins out of the piggy bank in the living room that his family put their change in and going to the local arcade to play. In middle school, he played mobile games that were popular with his friends, and by chance, he started playing online games in high school. After a variety of games, he came across Illusion while he was job hunting. And from that point on, he stayed with that game, all the way until now.
Illusion wasn’t a game with a steady player base for nothing. The guild system was exceptionally good and there were often events. In addition, since it was a game specialized in character customization, there were many people who played the game just for all the different accessories. It was a fun game for users of all ages and even had an active community, with a market and trade system in place.
‘Should I join a guild too?’
One day, that thought suddenly popped into Yeo-woon’s head. In other games, he mainly played by himself, and because of that, he’d rarely joined a proper guild.
Illusion was a game where it was difficult to progress through the story without working your way up one of several different character classes, to reach new and better versions of it that were called character jobs. When he worked hard to level up and was about to do his first job change, he heard that, without a guild, the higher his level, the more difficult it would be to advance further. So to get a hunting buff, he joined a guild that was always recruiting new guild members. But since the guild master did not log in consistently, the guild members left one after another and in the end, it became a ghost guild.
‘If I’m going to do this, should I just create a one-person guild and do it alone?’
He thought about it for a moment, but quickly dismissed the idea. Mainly because the strength of the hunting buff depended on guild level and had a huge range. If you were going to create a one-person guild, the buff would be so small that it would have been better to just play solo and not join a guild at all.
In order to find himself a new guild, Yeo-woon went onto the party matching screen and took a quick look around, to see if there was anyone currently looking for guild members.
Party Matching
[★Full-time part-time job★Star Cradle 5th edition 2.0]
[[For Sale] Please refer to the detailed description of each item!]
[Party for Moon Breaker]
[Unlimited sale of Hammer @@@@ presented by Buybuy Warehouse Cat <<]
1 2 3 4 …9 10 ▷
In the party matching window, there were numerous temporary parties for all kinds of trades and dungeons. While scrolling through Party Matching by pressing the arrows in reverse order starting from page 15, a guild recruitment post caught his eye.
★[[3ch] Looking for new Poseidon guild members]
“Should I try it right now?”
Without thinking, Yeo-woon clicked the ‘Join Party’ button. When the party leader accepted Yeo-woon’s join request, the mini map at the upper left of the screen also gained the party status, showing where each party member was.
This would be the incident that started everything.
There were a total of two party members. They were ‘Captain Poseidon’ and ‘Ji9Star’, a max level Night Spear. Joining the party was easy. Anyone could join by simply clicking on an existing party and then pressing the ‘Join Party’ button.
‘neutaaaa has joined the party.’
[Party] Ji9Star: Hi hi
Ji9Star was the party leader who let him join the party. So Yeo-woon assumed this person was also the guild master and as a result, Yeo-woon tried to turn his social skills up to the max and greeted him.
[Party] neutaaaa: Hello!
[Party] neutaaaa: I’m hoping to join the guild.
Until then, he’d had no interest in guilds or in-game names, so he had no idea what the Poseidon Guild was. This meant that he was completely unaware of the numerous rumors about Poseidon.
Earth Star looked at the party window, figured out where Yeo-woon was, and started moving straight towards him. The other party member, Captain Poseidon, was silent, so he was probably afk.
Through the world’s mini map, Yeo-woon saw a blue dot indicating a party member was fast approaching. He made his own character, who was sitting on the floor, get up and jump in place, prepared to welcome this Earth Star.
However, when Earth Star appeared in front of Yeo-woon, he stood in place and just looked at him for a long time.
‘I said hello earlier, should I say it again?’
But the moment Yeo-woon moved to break the silence, a speech bubble appeared above Earth Star’s head.
[Party] Ji9Star: Why are you so weak…waa
[Party] neutaaaa: ?
[Party] Ji9Star: ᄋᄉᄋ?
[Party] Ji9Star: Did you join without reading the party introduction?
Party introduction? Something like that existed in this game? Yeo-woon went back to the party matching window, found the guild recruitment post, and clicked on it. When he clicked on the title, a join button and an introduction appeared, set up by the user when they had created the post and it seemed to be talking about the guild’s requirements.
The introduction was short and clear:
‘200LV+/Access rate+/With interview/Do daily quests/Must attend ranking match’
‘Actually, I didn’t even know there could be conditions, so I didn’t notice them. Last time, I was just automatically in the guild as soon as I asked to join. Even if everyone has left now and it’s nothing but a ghost guild anymore…’
Among the conditions set forth by the guild, he was able to confirm that he definitely did not meet the required level, though he wasn’t sure what anything else meant… Because Yeo-woon had only just turned level 120.
[Party] neutaaaa: Aaah, I just saw it ㅠㅠ
[Party] Ji9Star: Lol
[Party] neutaaaa: Too bad…ㅜㅜ
[Party] Ji9Star: Yes lol
[Party] neutaaaa: But
[Party] neutaaaa: I think I’ll hit level 200 soon.
[Party] Ji9Star: Lmao?
[Party] neutaaaa: I reached level 50 in just one day, isn’t that cool?
[Party] Ji9Star: ??
[Party] neutaaaa: I stayed up all night for it
[Party] Ji9Star: ?
[Party] neutaaaa: No exceptions to the rules I guess? lmao
[Party] Ji9Star: ????????
It was just a joke. However, Earth Star did not seem to be easy-going enough to handle such a joke. That person didn’t react well at all, so it ended up being a painfully awkward situation. The moment Yeo-woon decided to just see himself out and moved his cursor to the Leave Party button, a speech bubble appeared above Earth Star’s head.
[Party] Ji9Star: Do you have a crush on me?
“…?”
[Party] Ji9Star: LOL
[Party] Ji9Star: Hey
[Party] Ji9Star: Why do you keep following me?
“…Eh?”
‘Who follows who? …I? Him?’
Yeo-woon had nothing to say and just stared at his monitor for a while. Since there was no answer, Earth Star again laughed a LOL.
[Server] Ji9Star: 3ch >neutaaaa< Whoever gets the first kill wins 100 million
“Uh…?”
‘What situation is this?’
The message was different in color from the previous one. Upon closer inspection, it appeared that Earth Star had used a server megaphone. Looking at the server text in front of Earth Star’s message, he realized that the server megaphone had made it so the message was sent to every channel, visible to everyone currently online in the game.
[Whispering] Full Meal AllChicken: ?
[Whispering] BeryStrawberry: Where are you?
[Whispering] Full Meal AllChicken: ?
[Whispering] Atil: What did you do?
[Whispering] Full Meal AllChicken: ?
[Whispering] Full Meal AllChicken: ?
[Whispering] Full Meal AllChicken: ?
People he didn’t know kept sending him whispers. The guild zone he was in was the only place where users could freely hit and kill each other, without having to request a PvP match. Additionally, if someone died in the guild zone, they received a death penalty, unless they owned an item called Token of Resurrection.
Not long after the whispers began, fancy users with sparkles all around their bodies appeared and suddenly beat him up. When Yeo-woon first heard a loud hitting sound, he hurriedly took a potion and tried to run out of the guild zone. He pressed the right keys, but got frozen in place by a user’s skill and so the beating continued.
‘You died. Would you like to resurrect in the closest village?’
Yeo-woon stared at the screen in fascination once he realized that his character’s eyes had turned into Xs and some of his experience points had been removed as a penalty for dying here.
[All] BeryStrawberry: Oops, I killed them^^’
[All] DonnerDono: ?
[All] 101112: Oh, it’s already over
“What, I’m really dead?”
Yeo-woon muttered absently to himself. It all happened so fast, he couldn’t quite process what had even happened to him.
[All] DonnerDono: Berry you dog lmao
[All] DonnerDono: I shaved off all that person’s hp
[All] DonnerDono: You only got the last hit lol
[All] Ji9Star: ᄋᄉᄋ lol
[All] DonnerDono: Yeah, no matter how I look at things, this just ain’t it
[All] DonnerDono: If you have a conscience, reject this money
[All] BeryStrawberry: I’m the one who got the last hit lol doesn’t matter who was here first
[All] DonnerDono: So it’s all good just because you managed to steal my kill?
[All] BeryStrawberry: Yep gg ig you should have worked harder and tried to hit last?
[All] DonnerDono: Hey so
[All] DonnerDono: Let’s just split it 7:3. Me 7 you 3
[All] DonnerDono: Deal?
DonnerDono and BeryStrawberry were making deals about Yeo-woon’s death. Yeo-woon, as the person this was about, chose to stay quiet.
[All] BeryStrawberry: Sounds like a scam lol
[All] BeryStrawberry: If someone reports for bullying only my name is in the log
[All] BeryStrawberry: So I’m the only one eating a ban haha
[All] BeryStrawberry: While you get only positives?
[All] DonnerDono: LOL Are you a fucking clown?
[All] DonnerDono: You don’t get banned for stuff like this, you idiot;
[All] BeryStrawberry: Yeah no listen killing beginners is a warning + sale restriction^^ So there’s punishment and I won’t pay you haha
[All] DonnerDono: Yeah no listen~^^
[All] BeryStrawberry: It’s obvious stuff^^ Or is your brain just noodle soup in disguise?
[All] DonnerDono: Sure, like your face~
[All] BeryStrawberry: Sure.
[All] DonnerDono: Earth Star, who will receive it then? You can decide;;
[All] Ji9Star: Lol you two should figure it out on your own >_<
[All] BeryStrawberry: LOL nice LOL
[All] DonnerDono: Let’s do this, then!
As soon as Earth Star jumped away, getting out of their range, DonnerDono and BeryStrawberry began attacking each other. Brilliant skills and backhanded compliments steadily poured onto the map, and in the middle of it all, Yeo-woon’s character was still lying on the ground as a useless corpse. Surrounded by the flashy fighters, his character looked pitiful, especially with his title of [Just Past The Beginning!] right beside his username.
[All] Green Tea Latte: Oh what; Don’t fight in the center!!!! Now I almost died on the road.
[All] Dadfather: The guild zone really is a fight zone every day. I think there’s more fights here than in the arena lol.
[All] Dark Flame Dragon: A day like any other
“….”
‘I’m the one who died, so why are they angry at each other?’
Yeo-woon could only laugh and watch the two fight.
[All] BeryStrawberry: Lol weak things always talk big
The fight went on for a long time, but in the end BeryStrawberry emerged victorious.
[All] Ji9Star: Please send the kill verification image to [email protected]
[All] BeryStrawberry: Will do~~~
“Really, haa? The guy who killed me is actually getting paid?”
It was so absurd that he just laughed. Yeo-woon had seen people kill each other and die in the guild zone a few times before, but he never would have thought he’d join their ranks one day.
[Party] neutaaaa: Hey…
[Party] neutaaaa: I think there’s some misunderstanding.
[Party] Ji9Star: What misunderstanding?
[Party] neutaaaa: I didn’t follow you…ㅜㅜ
The mob-attack was so unfair. Earth Star was even the first user he’d met today. Did he really think it was right, to suddenly kill someone like this without giving them a chance to clear up potential misunderstandings? But Earth Star just laughed, until an endless string of hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha filled up the entire chatbox.
[Party] Ji9Star: Your character looks like it was made just yesterday
[Party] neutaaaa: I’m level 120?
[Party] Ji9Star: Seems like you did stay up all night lol
[Party] Ji9Star: Hey
[Party] Ji9Star: Aren’t you tired of doing this every time, making all these alts?
[Party] neutaaaa: Alts…? No, I told you…
[Party] Ji9Star: Yeah, but who’s main would look like this lol
“It’s the truth, you stupid bastard.”
Without even realizing it, he started cursing out loud.
‘Whose main… The main I raised with great care and gave cash items to and added good stats to his armor!’
Hearing Earth Star belittle him, calling him a liar, Yeo-woon felt his more murderous side rear its head.
‘I don’t get how you can just say he’s an alt.’
[Party] Ji9Star: LOL
[Party] Ji9Star: Just say you have a crush
[Party] Ji9Star: I will graciously understand and gently let you downㅠㅠ
[Party] neutaaaa: I hate you;
‘Is he crazy? I wouldn’t do that, even if it’d kill me.’
[Party] Ji9Star: Lmaoooooo
[Party] Ji9Star: No other kind of person would be this persistent…
[Party] Ji9Star: Who lives like this?
[Party] Ji9Star: You’re like an obsessed puppy
[Party] Ji9Star: But it’s all good even if you get caught breaking rules because surely you get to join anyway
[Party] Ji9Star: But it's so mean and unfair if you instead get rightfully rejected for it
[Party] Ji9Star: Isn’t that how you feel?
“Oh.”
Yeo-woon felt a little stung by those words. It was true that he’d brought up the suggestion to ignore his low level, just in case. But he could already guess that that wasn’t the true reason behind Earth Star’s actions, so he decided to keep listening for a bit longer.
[Party] Ji9Star: Didn’t even put in the effort to level up…
[Party] Ji9Star: Do you think everything will be fine if you just keep trying with a new alt for long enough?
[Party] Ji9Star: You can’t live like that
[Party] Ji9Star: Your life is so pathetic lol
[Party] Ji9Star: Do you enjoy going on like this, always trying to freeload and getting insulted by someone you don’t really know?
[Party] Ji9Star: If it were me, I would have quit a long time ago lol
“Damn, this assault…”
‘Why are you typing so fast? There’s no chance to jump in.’
As he kept staring at the monitor in surprise for a while, Earth Star wrote another message, saying LOL.
[Party] Ji9Star: Lmaooo why aren’t you saying anything?ㅠㅠ Did you die?
It’s not that he was dead, it was that he couldn’t keep up with the speed of these messages. When he processed the words, he realized that Earth Star seemed to have mistaken him for someone else. Only once he came to this conclusion did Yeo-woon relax again and ask what he was actually most curious about.
[Party] neutaaaa: How fast can you type?
[Party] Ji9Star: Faster than you
[Party] neutaaaa: Ah yes; I’m jealous…
[Party] Ji9Star: thx thx Whenever kids like you pick a fight, words gotta come quick!><
‘I’m not even angry anymore. The guy clearly misunderstood something.’
If someone only listened to parts of it, they wouldn’t notice that, but it seemed like he was only stating what he’d wanted to say for a long time. Yeo-woon calmly took a deep breath and typed.
[Party] neutaaaa: Listen to me
[Party] Ji9Star: I can’t hear you, how can I listen? LOL
[Party] neutaaaa: Look then;
[Party] Ji9Star: Kk~ Go on
[Party] neutaaaa: Today is your first time meeting me.
[Party] Ji9Star: Really lmaoo
[Party] neutaaaa: I was level 120 and I wanted to join a guild, but now I lost experience because of you, who is already max level.
[Party] Ji9Star: Lol it’s like the title of a light novel
[Party] Ji9Star: I guess you read a lot!
[Party] neutaaaa: So, let me say…
[Party] neutaaaa: I don’t know what happened to Earth Star so far, but
[Party] neutaaaa: Aren’t you saying too many rude things to an innocent user and without any evidence for your assumptions? :)
In fact, he wanted to say two very contradictory things, but when coming out of the same mouth, they couldn’t both work. He couldn’t be two people at once, so he chose to respond as calmly as he could. He even put a friendly smiling face at the end, so the other person could relax again too.
[Party] Ji9Star: I give you a pick-me score of A ^^
[Party] Ji9Star: But an acting score of F
[Party] Ji9Star: So total score is F
Fuck being calm. His typing speed increased. As it were, the most recent village he’d get resurrected in was still within the guild zone, so trying to escape was pointless. That village was right next to them.
‘If I had known this would happen, I would have bought some warp capsules.’
[Party] Ji9Star: I see you’re lost for words again lol
[Party] Ji9Star: Did you really think I wouldn’t confront you like this? I guess you did
[Party] Ji9Star: I guess it’s okay for a bastard like you to say something to me, but
[Party] Ji9Star: If a ranker says one wrong word to a small player, he or she becomes the villainㅜㅜ
[Party] Ji9Star: Hmm, but I’m not the GM, so I’m allowed to be rude sometimes ㅠᄉㅠ So why are you saying this to me…
[Party] neutaaaa: But you’re the one saying things right now, not me?
[Party] Ji9Star: Didn’t ask
[Party] neutaaaa: Ugh
[Party] Ji9Star: Now, what next?
He didn’t understand him at all. Was this what it felt like to argue with an opinionated pre-schooler?
[Party] neutaaaa: I’ll just leave…
[Party] Ji9Star: Let me know what time you will upload your new work today~
‘What new work is he talking about??’
Yeo-woon didn’t have the faintest clue what he meant.
“What the hell did I say that was so bad?”
He grumbled in anger.
‘Bad life, obsessions, freeloading, I don’t know anything about that. My only crime is trying to join a guild. That’s the truth…’
[Party] neutaaaa: fvhfv wndrjVmsGbesa
[Party] neutaaaa: rngt
Why was his keyboard suddenly writing in completely different letters? Yeo-woon pressed the Language Switch key and the Enter key with his little finger, to return his keyboard to normal. He was planning to retype what he just said, but Earth Star struck first.
[Party] Ji9Star: Translation plz :(
[Party] neutaaaa: I really didn’t see the party introduction.
[Party] Ji9Star: Thx :)
[Party] neutaaaa: Hah…
‘If you’d swear some more, I could at least report you as a user with bad manners.’
There was no way to report him for being sarcastic and faking obliviousness.
[Party] neutaaaa: I’m a newbie so I don’t know much about the guild system.
[Party] neutaaaa: Really.
[Party] Ji9Star: I don’t know because I’m a newbie ㅠㅠ <<Translation - Everything is explained on one convenient game screen, so I knew all along
[Party] neutaaaa: No?
[Party] Ji9Star: Translation - Oops got caught in the act
“….”
[Party] Ji9Star: Lmao hit the mark, right?
[Party] Ji9Star: I saw right through it, didn’t I?
[Party] Ji9Star: Not funny anymore, is it?
‘I should’ve just played solo. Or joined another beginners’ guild! This was such a waste of time and all I got was my experience points reduced and then I had to listen to pointless insults just because I stumbled on some crazy person.’
[Party] neutaaaa: I’m really leaving… I was hoping to clear up the misunderstanding, but you clearly don’t care.
[Party] neutaaaa: Bye…
[Party] Ji9Star: Lol let’s run away because we got caught, right?
[Party] neutaaaa: No
[Party] Ji9Star: Translation - Yes
Yeo-woon decided to muster up a thousand years of patience and forgive the guy just this once. Just to not have to deal with this any longer.
‘Hope you bite your tongue while eating. Miss the bus and have to run and drop your phone. When going out, get pigeon shit dropped right on your head. Ah, I guess I should just act like I stepped on shit myself and leave the party…’
[Party] Captain Poseidon: Ah, Earth Star!
[Party] Captain Poseidon: Did you hit your head?? What happened while I was gone…;;;
[Party] Captain Poseidon: Neu-nam,e wiat a min!!
The person who had been afk all this time had finally returned. Yeo-woon knew that the Captain still had more to say, but he didn’t want to be in this party for another second. So he gave his screen the middle finger and left them by themselves.
‘neutaaaa has left the party.’
And as soon as he revived in the nearby village, he ran blindly in a random direction. But soon after, Earth Star found him. He caught up with Yeo-woon’s character, who had run to the other side of the entire village.
‘Why’s he so fast?’
His speed was so unbelievable that his jaw dropped. It only took that one moment of distraction for Earth Star to cross the remaining distance, as if he had some longer, better version of the dash skill.
‘Zero wave!’
Earth Star beat Yeo-woon’s character to death with a one-shot skill. There was a sound like something breaking and then his character’s back was bent clean in half. A sign appeared above him, showing it had been a critical hit, and then he died again and his experience points fell once more.
‘You died. Would you like to resurrect in the closest village?’
[All] neutaaaa: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Oh no, what a mistake
‘A mistake? Using a skill to beat someone to death? No way.’
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Guess you should have stopped when I called you lmaoo
[Whispering] neutaaaa: You didn’t call for me?;;
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Didn’t I?>_<
‘You didn’t, you fucking bastard.’
Yeo-woon pressed the revive button, respawning in the village again. And then he took off in a new direction, but something that looked like a fly from afar dashed up from behind him, fast as a rocket and landed in front of him. Yeo-woon was shocked.
‘You were at the other end of the whole village, but you still caught up with my character so quickly?’
This should have been impossible, unless he had some insane speed buff. Something strange was going on with this character.
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Let me clear up the misunderstanding rq!
[Whispering] neutaaaa: ??
Yeo-woon stopped for a moment and wrote a question mark in the chat window.
‘What misunderstanding? There’s no way there’s another misunderstanding between him and I.’
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Because of you, the GM lowered my position in the guild ㅠ Feel sorry for me
Then Earth Star used an emote to make his character hit the ground and cry. To Yeo-woon’s surprise, a faint smile slowly spread across his own lips.
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Good good ^^
[Whispering] Ji9Star: ?
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Nice ^^
‘No clue what it means, but that’s really good.’
Seeing as that change made him so annoyed that he even followed Yeo-woon all the way here.
[Whispering] Ji9Star: It’s awful
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Great ^^
‘I’ve never before in my life argued with someone like pre-schoolers.’
But since the person he was dealing with was just like a pre-schooler, he’d started talking this way without even realizing at first. And wasn’t there some fitting sayings for this situation anyway, like ‘an eye for an eye’?
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Stop using those happy emotes - I feel weird. TIA
[Whispering] Ji9Star: GM keeps calling me trash. What will you do about this?
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Trash << Agree :)
It seemed the person who was afk earlier was the actual guild master. But then why did this guy, who wasn’t even the GM, get so irritated so quick by Yeo-woon having missed their rules?
‘…Anyways, that’s none of my business.’
Feeling relieved, he started running towards the right edge of the guild zone map again.
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Hey
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Trash Punch><
However, Earth Star seemed to not want to let things go, as he kept following his character and even circling him with his speed, as well as pummeling his character with normal attack skills. But even more frustratingly, maybe thanks to Earth Star being max level, Yeo-woon couldn’t even handle five of his hits before his health droped into the red. So he had to constantly use precious health potions like they were his last water in a desert.
When he finally managed to get out of the guild zone, he also left his gnawing fear of suffering a second player-kill behind.
‘I don’t plan on setting foot near the guild zone again any time soon. Maybe I should just go to a whole different channel…’
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Where are you going?
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Hey
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Where are you going?
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Hey, where are you going instead of just talking?
[Whispering] Ji9Star: You
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Hey
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Just admit that you like me so much that you even made this alt
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Hey you
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Can you not see my messages…
“How is he typing so fast…”
The speed of those messages was like speaking in person. It was almost at lightspeed and it was impossible to understand how it could be done, unless everything was written in advance and then copy-pasted.
‘Ji9Star sent a friend request. Do you want to accept?’
Then, a large Friend Request window appeared on the screen. A max-level nightspear jumped around in the background, causing an afterimage effect. It felt like the character was urging him to accept the friend request already. Of course Yeo-woon refused.
‘You have rejected the friend request.’
‘Ji9Star sent a friend request. Do you want to accept?’
‘You have rejected the friend request.’
‘Ji9Star sent a friend request. Do you want to accept?’
‘You have rejected the friend request.’
He couldn’t go anywhere, thanks to the constant friend requests that kept popping up. The persistent chat messages and friend requests kept covering up his screen. Sometimes, 1v1 PvP Request windows and Party Invitation windows would also pop up. After rejecting all incoming messages for twenty times in a row, Earth Star stopped zipping all over the place and came to a halt in front of Yeo-woon’s character.
[Whispering] Ji9Star: I’m right here;
‘Why are you so invested in this?’
He couldn’t figure out his intentions. He’d only wanted to leave the party and the whole situation behind himself gracefully. Why would Earth Star expect anything more from him?
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Are you a child?
[Whispering] neutaaaa: I already have lots of friends, so I won’t be friends with you.
[Whispering] Ji9Star: This is so dumb. Are you really bragging about the number of friends you have right now?
[Whispering] Ji9Star: If we’re looking at things from that kinda view, I have way more friends than you.
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Ah sure…
[Whispering] Ji9Star: I just needed to put something big on your screen to stop you from running, since you’re ignoring me and keep running off ㅠ
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Ah… I see.
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Sorry, I have nothing more to say.ㅜㅜ
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Stop following me.
[Whispering] Ji9Star: I won’t follow you anymore, if you just please whisper to the GM and tell him that I have made up with you!
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Just say I apologized!><
“What…”
‘If you don’t apologize, where’s the point in me saying that you did?’
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Are you an actual child?ㅠ
[Whispering] Ji9Star: No… But for a while now, I’ve secretly tried to myself this was all just a weird nightmare…
[Whispering] neutaaaa: But you can’t do it secretly and also expect it to be openly known.ㅠㅠ
[Whispering] Ji9Star: …?
The best way to respond to a sarcastic person was to make them swallow their own medicine. Well, the actual best way was to not interact with them at all, but even when Yeo-woon switched to a different channel on the server, Earth Star could just tell somehow and kept hunting him down, until he found him again.
[Whispering] Ji9Star: But I really don’t understand
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Why on earth are you doing this to me?
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Do you know me?
[Whispering] neutaaaa: That’s what I was going to ask
[Whispering] Ji9Star: I’m the one always meeting weird people like this, and yet this pick-me here is really…
[Whispering] neutaaaa: Haa? Maybe you don’t know what pick-me means…
[Whispering] Ji9Star: I know;
[Whispering] neutaaaa: So what’s it mean?
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Roleplaying a total victim. Like you’re doing now;;
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Ah really, what should I do about my position ㅠ Give it back already!!ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ
[Whispering] neutaaaa: That’s not my responsibility.
‘Ji9Star sent a friend request. Do you want to accept?’
‘You have rejected the friend request.’
It became difficult for Yeo-woon to play the game smoothly, thanks to all the annoying windows popping up all the time. And then Earth Star even followed him into the field and kept him from hunting any monsters.
[Whispering] Ji9Star: Trash Punch!
Since his high-level skills immediately wiped out the monsters on the map, there were none left for Yeo-woon’s own quest to kill monsters. He just wanted to hit this Earth Star, who was still zipping all over the screen. He wanted to stop him and beat him up, but this wasn’t the guild zone, so they couldn’t hit each other at all. And he wasn’t a max level player like him, so even if they could have, Yeo-woon would have only died again.
‘Can’t I block him or something?’
Even while he searched through the settings window and all its options, the friend requests continued taking up his screen.
‘Ji9Star sent a friend request. Do you want to accept?’
‘You have rejected the friend request.’
‘Ah, this is so annoying. I really don’t want to play anymore for today, with all this bs he's pulling...’
Yeo-woon took off his headphones and then just pressed the power button, completely shutting off his computer for the day.

Week 1- About Me
Hi there, my name is Isaac Haworth and I am currently a student studying in QUT's Game Development course. I have grown up with video games for as long as I can remember with the Playstation 2 and Gameboy Advanced and have decided I should give back with some of my own ideas.
Today marks my first entry with regards to my journey into games design- At QUT that is.
What I've worked on before
Prior to my studies, I have worked on several projects before that did include games design under the alias of Bartstib Flisague which include the following:
Tome of the Far Traveller
This project is a Homebrew supplement for the game Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition made with accordance to that games System Reference Document (SRD). In this project I created all the content inside regarding the character options and those of monsters. The art was commissioned from a friend.
Steam Workshop Submissions
Being something of a gamer myself, I have a steam account with a ton of games on it, and for at least one game I have designed various content for it on the steam workshop. The game was Clone Drone in the Danger Zone. The content in question were custom levels and challenges, in which I designed the environment the player fights within, and the arrangement of enemies they come across.
What I plan to do
As of writing this post I have plans for several games to make in the future- some of which may be achievable to some lesser degree in this unit. These include:
An 2D RPG where you play as a noir detective in a steam/collagepunk city solving crimes and delivering justice (Might be possible in the later years)
A 2D action platformer akin to the megaman games (should be possible in this unit)
A 2D metroidvania set in a sci-fi setting that emphasizes speed and movement (may be possible in an extremely primitive form)
A 2D fighting game that uses a cast of unique characters in a fantasy setting (might be possible in this unit)
and many more!
Goals
Over the course of this unit, I plan to bring into fruition one of my game ideas with the utilization of GDevelop.
With that said, I look forward to my journey here :)

In 5e Archmage is an honorary title given to wizards in certain important positions, or who are bold and powerful enough to claim such title and not get beaten up.
Currently there isn't any official skill or level requirement to become one, but it's assumed that they must be very powerful spellcasters to be able to hold their position. However, from what I've been able to find from past editions, there used to be prerequisites:
In 1e Archmages were magic users who had reached at least 18th level and therefore gained access to their first 9th level spell.
In 3.5e it became a Prestige class. Prestige classes were advanced classes that a character could only take if they met certain requirements after already choosing a base class. For an Archmage the requirements where this:
- Skills: Knowledge (arcana) 15 ranks, Spellcraft 15 ranks. - Feats: Skill Focus (Spellcraft), Spell Focus in two schools of magic. - Spellcasting: Ability to cast 7th level arcane spells, knowledge of 5th level or higher spells from at least five schools.
In 4e it was an Epic destiny for wizards. Epic destinies could be chosen at 21th level and went up to the 30th (4e didn't have the 20th level cap). They were the character's endgame, a way to leave a lasting impact on the world or even the universe.
There's also the fact that all the Archmages that got stats for 5e seen to be at least 18th level:
- Vajra Safahr, the current Blackstaff - 18th level. - Manshoon, founder of the Zentharim - 18th level. - Mordenkainen, creator of many spells - 18th level. - Vizeran DeVir, fellow student to the Archmage of Menzoberranzan Gromph Baenre - 18th level. - Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage of Undermountain - 20th level.
Two of them live in Waterdeep - Vajra and Halaster - and they lead two of the city's magical academies- Blackstaff Academy and Halaster's Heirs. If we add Gale, there would be three Archmages in the city. That would be too many, but considering Waterdeep is a big, heavily academic city and a cultural hub it isn't that far-fetched.
I think that the reason why Gale isn't on that list has more to do with the wiki being written by fans and BG3 being still new, there are areas that are incomplete. WotC holds now all the rights for the characters and the story after Larian's decision to not make BG4, and they can put them in future official material like they've done in the past with Minsc.
The Archmage from the D&D Beyond is a generic 18th level spellcaster that players can encounter in some adventures. The reason why they're categorized as a monster is because they have a stat block in case they become an enemy that you have to defeat or an ally that can fight at your side. There are creatures and people of all sorts in the category. The Archmage in particular can be of any alignment.
Tumblr media
As for how famous he would be, we can only speculate because I don't think there's any specific rule about that. The closest to that I think is this bit in the 5e Player's Handbook:
- In the 1st tier (levels 1-4), characters are effectively apprentice adventurers. They are learning the features that define them as members of particular classes, including the major choices that flavor their class features as they advance (such as a wizard’s Arcane Tradition or a fighter’s Martial Archetype). The threats they face are relatively minor, usually posing a danger to local farm steads or villages. - In the 2nd tier (levels 5-10), characters come into their own. Many spellcasters gain access to 3rd-level spells at the start of this tier, crossing a new threshold of magical power with spells such as fireball and lightning bolt. At this tier, many weapon-using classes gain the ability to make multiple attacks in one round. These characters have become important, facing dangers that threaten cities and kingdoms. - In the 3rd tier (levels 11-16), characters have reached a level of power that sets them high above the ordinary populace and makes them special even among adventurers. At 11th level, many spellcasters gain access to 6th-level spells, some of which create effects previously impossible for player characters to achieve. Other characters gain features that allow them to make more attacks or do more impressive things with those attacks. These mighty adventurers often confront threats to whole regions and continents. - At the 4th tier (levels 17-20), characters achieve the pinnacle of their class features, becoming heroic (or villainous) archetypes in their own right. The fate of the world or even the fundamental order of the multiverse might hang in the balance during their adventures.
Gale was most certainly on the 4th tier as an Archmage and Chosen of Mystra, and when you play in that league people know you. As much of a homebody as Gale is, he must have travelled to many places to fulfil his duties as Chosen, such as destroying magic that threatens the balance of the Weave

Player: Let me deal with the circle. Gale: Deal with it how? I hate to pull rank, but I was once Mystra's Chosen. Destroying magic like this was my bread and butter.
He's still quite young, so he couldn't have become as famous as much older Chosen/Archmages like Elminster or the Seven Sisters simply because he hasn't have as much time as them, but I think it would be safe to assume that he was famous in Waterdeep (and Morena must have made sure that everyone knows how wonderful her son is and how proud she is, I know it in my heart).
Outside of that, not only does Lorroakan know his name and recognize him despite being from different cities, but he also knows that he was Mystra's Chosen and that he has lost that position, which makes me think that he was also well known among scholars along the Sword Coast in the vert least. Maybe some villagers here and there that he helped during his travels know him too? He must have gotten that neck and forehead scars from somewhere and he says at some point that he has been threatened with a knife before.
And now he's returning home after saving Baldur's Gate and the Sword Coats from a Mindflayer invasion caused by the return of the Dead Three and marrying one of the other heroes? There will be the Faerûnian equivalent of paparazzi trying to sneak in that wedding, mark my words.
Gale as an archmage
I've been thinking about this for a while. If you select Gale as an origin character in the character creator and play his intro, he introduces himself as Gale of Waterdeep™ he immediately follows with "please - no need to be intimidated."
Tumblr media
Now I think we initially brush this statement off as Gale being full of himself, but the first time you talk to him and ask him to tell you about himself, there's an option to say something like "Come on, you must have stories from your time as archmage."
Tumblr media
And I've always wondered - how would tav know this? Gale hasn't mentioned it. Which leads me to my research question:
Is Gale famous?
Not Elminster-famous, of course, but is he THE archmage of Waterdeep, known throughout the Realms? Is Gale of Waterdeep a legitimate title, not just one he decided to use because it sounds important?
Maybe all of this is common knowledge in DnD lore, but it's a fairly new world to me. Here's what I found about archmages:
From the Forgotten Realms fandom wiki (https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Archmage):
Archmages were among the most powerful arcane spellcasters found throughout all of Faerûn. These practitioners of the Art were experts at manipulating and altering their spells, often in strange ways. Many cities across Faerûn had a single archmage who dedicated themselves to serve that settlement and its people. Some notable cities included Lyrabar in Impiltur, and the great western metropolis of Waterdeep. The term "archmage" was often used to refer to spellcasters who took on leadership roles among similarly-inclined practitioners of The Art. In the drow city of Menzoberranzan, the head of the arcane academy known as Sorcere was granted the title, Archmage of Menzoberranzan.
So, to summarize, archmages are super powerful, big cities often have a singular, dedicated archmage, and they take on leadership roles in the city, sometimes (or at least once) being deemed THE archmage of the city.
I've already seen posts about the insane amount of power held by archmages, so I'm not really going to go into that. I'm just interested in how well-known Gale would be in the Realms. One issue I'm running into while researching is that many people seem to approach the archmage in terms of DnD stats (spell levels, player levels, etc) rather than from a storytelling perspective.
I can't find much else specifically on how widely known archmages would be. There is a list of archmages on the Forgotten Realms wiki, but Gale isn't included on it. I'm assuming maybe BG3 lore is considered an off-shoot of FR lore and therefore not necessarily canon? Let me know if I'm wrong about this.
So that leaves me with message board responses. Here are some notable ones:
Tumblr media
An old candlekeep.com forum on the differences between the titles used by magic users. Several users seem to agree with this person.
Tumblr media
From the same thread as above.
Interestingly, DnD beyond has archmage categorized as a monster. I'm not sure if this applies only to evil-aligned mages or not, so anyone with more familiarity, feel free to chime in. Anyway, here's what DnD beyond says:
"Archmages are powerful (and usually quite old) spellcasters dedicated to the study of the arcane arts. Benevolent ones counsel kings and queens, while evil ones rule as tyrants and pursue lichdom. Those who are neither good nor evil sequester themselves in remote towers to practice their magic without interruption. An archmage typically has one or more apprentice mages, and an archmage's abode has numerous magical wards and guardians to discourage interlopers."
Gale does mention having students/apprentices at some point (he says something about being impatient with them if I remember correctly, but I can't remember when he actually says it), and, if he's Professor Gale in the epilogue, you're told that an apprentice delivered the invite to the party.
I also find it interesting that archmages typically have wards around their home to keep out intruders, implying that they're well-known enough to have people regularly trying to break into their home?? Or at least has happened enough times to warrant protection.
I also appreciate this reddit comment on a thread asking about the rarity of archmages:
Tumblr media
This lead me to a super interesting reddit post which I really suggest you check out if you're interested. The OP breaks down the percentages of each class and level and translates that to city populations. I'm bad at math so that may be a horrible explanation. Anyway, here's a chart that they made:
Tumblr media
I have been trying my hardest to put the alt text on the images for accessibility but I have no idea how that would work with this chart. I did include the text at the bottom for screen readers just in case. I'm sorry!
Sooooo someone in the comments asked specifically about Waterdeep and here's what someone who is good at math figured out! (They are correcting a previous comment with incorrect math, hence the first part of the comment):
Tumblr media
Since a wizard is considered an archmage at level 18, it's safe to say that Gale would definitely be one of only a few wizards in Waterdeep with such a title. And if the above commenter's assumption about the Blackstaff being one of the only archmages in the city, Gale being of a similar level is HUGE, right? The Blackstaff is a big deal. From the Forgotten Realms wiki:
Blackstaff was the title and name given to the master of the eponymous staff and Blackstaff Tower, including Blackstaff Academy, as well as the Archmage of Waterdeep.
So if the Blackstaff is THE Archmage of Waterdeep, Gale, obviously, is not. But!!! If we can trust the math of the reddit users above, and we assume Gale was at least a level 19 wizard pre-orb/tadpole/whatever ... he would be one of two archmages in Waterdeep, second only to the Blackstaff themself.
I personally think that's enough renown to be a somewhat familiar name throughout Faerûn. So yes, Gale is a bit arrogant and, in his own words, pompous about being Gale of Waterdeep™ but perhaps it's warranted.
This has been a deep dive fueled by procrastination about writing the research papers I should actually be writing right now. Thank you for your time

So I only just found this out.
Wizards of the Coast sent a copy of the new 2024 Player's Handbook to Michael Shea (Author of the Lazy Dungeon Master and the Forge of Foes - two amazing books you should check out)
After the video had been up for a while, he was asked to blur almost all footage of the book by Wizards of the Coast due to concerns over piracy.
Michael doesn't even show the whole book in the video.
youtube
It just goes to show you how arrogant and out of touch wizards of the coast is. They don't even want you to see their products. They know people will buy the product independent of the content inside of it.
If you play 5th Edition, please switch to an equivalent game by a different company like Level Up Advanced 5E or Tales of the Valiant.

Undecided about D&D 5.5 and the 2024 rules
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros:
Weapon Mastery
Cunning Strike
stat boosts and skills moving from Species to Backgrounds
the PHB rules glossary and the DMG toolkit (for ease of use)
origin feats, and general feats giving +1 to a stat
easier to homebrew player-facing rules (because feats and subclasses are more streamlined)
some big changes, some minor tweaks
Cons:
power creep (full assessment pending until the MM comes out)
uneven power creep
stealth makes no sense
they fully bailed on the skill system
strains suspension of disbelief even more
less support for homebrewed monsters
some big changes, some minor tweaks
The CR system needs playtesting with the new Monster Manual, so assessment pending. We're probably gonna see much more dangerous monsters: Cure Wounds straight up doubled the hp it heals, and healing in general is a lot more generous. I don't know if that bloat was necessary, or motivated by anything other than "players can do MOAR damage now, buy our new books to be COOLER!", followed by a domino effect.
At this point, I'm torn between incorporating a few 5.5 rules to 5e, or a few 5e rules to 5.5, or whole other subsystems to either (I'm looking at the skill system of Level Up a.k.a. Advanced 5th Edition, it's interesting), or abandoning D&D altogether (because I'm tired, not because it's that bad). But I'm pretty sure I won't adopt 5.5 as is.
Assessment pending.

I'm taking this as an invitation. Sorry.
In the case of Tabletop RPGs, our One Thing is usually the ubiquity of D&D 5th edition. I have my own complex theories as to why it's everywhere that are probably partially true. The reason this upsets people is that even though there are many other game systems out there, D&D, and specifically 5e, is the most forward in the public consciousness, so people make huge supplements like the one in the op to brute force the D&D system into telling the type of story they want, instead of looking into the breadth of other ttrpg systems that might already be designed for that type of game.
Here's the thing. D&D 5e is not a bad system. I repeat: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS 5TH EDITION IS NOT A BAD SYSTEM. I like 5e for what it is, and I have played in and run many games in it. The problem is that people treat it as the end-all-be-all of rpg rulesets.
The thing is, if you barely know about the ttrpg hobby at all, D&D is likely the only name you know. You're familliar with the concept of dice with more than six sides, maybe, or the idea of character classes like fighter and wizard from having played skyrim or whatever. Armed with this surface-level knowledge, you set out to find a D&D group, maybe end up a bit intimidated by the rules. They help you learn, you play a few adventures together, you have a good time.
Cool, we've been cowboys, but I wanna go to space! So we gotta make lazer guns and rules for spaceships and asteriod fields and integrate all of this into our game system designed for dungeon crawling.
You start to wonder about maybe telling other stories together. High Fantasy is great after all, but I wanna be cowboys. Great! Let's make some rules for firearms.
Let's do lovecraft! Maybe we make a sanity tracker and advanced madness rules, new spells, a bunch of human variants if we want to be more traditionally lovecraftian, and integrate it all into our rules system for dungeon crawling. Next lets do superheroes! Better to do this every time than learn a new rules system. The first time was so hard, after all, right?
WRONG!!!!!
Part of the problem is that 5e has a reputation of being simple - but you can get so much simpler! There are many games that only use six-sided dice, or that have rules that fit on a single page, or that don't even need character sheets! 5e is certainly simpler than previous editions of D&D, don't get me wrong, but it's far from the simplest or easiest to learn.
Another problem here is that, while you can tell many kinds of stories in the D&D system, it's really best suited for dungeon crawls. The social interaction and exploration rules are basically a little bit of guidelines and the phrase "the DM is the final arbiter." Other game systems exist that maybe aren't so good at the dungeon-delving, but are better at handling social interaction, for example.
On top of all this, you're adding so many extra rules to the 5th edition experience that it's not even really simple anymore, is it? A system designed to handle, say, dogfights in space is going to do that much more simply than ad-hoc rules slapped on top of a system designed for something else, whether that system is D&D or Mutants and Masterminds or Call of Catthulu (no, that's not a typo, that's a real game system, go look it up).
And that's just addressing things from a player's perspective. 3rd Party Publishers look at the insane momentum D&D has in popular culture and within the hobby and see $$$. They want to write and publish an rpg module about, idk, Lovecraftian Horror on the Titanic. So they brute force it into 5e because that's where the money is, instead of looking at the huge amount of other options to see even popular systems like Call of Cthulu that might be a better fit.
Tumblr media
"Hey I wanna play a game where lovecraftian horrors attack the titanic! And the PCs have to desperately try to survive!"
"Woah! That sounds like an absolutely awesome module for Call of Cth-"
"I think D&D 5e would be the best system for this."
