‘Pride and Prejudice’ Gets New Adaptation From Audible Starring Marisa Abela and Harris Dickinson

Leading up to the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, Audible will release a brand-new adaptation of her beloved classic “Pride and Prejudice” — which, while remaining “faithful to the original text” will also add a “unique interior perspective” from Elizabeth Bennet, the novel’s quick-witted heroine. The first Audible original audiobook of “Pride and Prejudice” will be released worldwide in English, to be followed by local versions in Castilian Spanish, French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese. The English-language cast is led by British actors Marisa Abela (“Industry,” “Back to Black,” “Black Bag”) as Elizabeth Bennet and Harris Dickinson (“Babygirl,” “The Iron Claw”) as Mr. Darcy. The ensemble cast also includes Will Poulter as Mr. Wickham, Jessie Buckley as Caroline Bingley, Toheeb Jimoh as Mr. Bingley and Glenn Close as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Naima Jamal is among dozens of victims of Libya’s modern slave trade.

Naima Jamal, a 20-year-old Ethiopian woman from Oromia, was abducted shortly after her arrival in Libya in May 2024. Since then, her family has been subjected to enormous demands from human traffickers, their calls laden with threats and cruelty, their ransom demands rise and shift with each passing week. The latest demand: $6,000 for her release.

This morning, the traffickers sent a video of Naima being tortured. The footage, which her family received with horror, shows the unimaginable brutality of Libya’s trafficking networks. Naima is not alone. In another image sent alongside the video, over 50 other victims can be seen, their bodies and spirits shackled, awaiting to be auctioned like commodities in a market that has no place in humanity but thrives in Libya, a nation where the echoes of its ancient slave trade still roar loud and unbroken.

“This is the reality of Libya today,” writes activist and survivor David Yambio in response to this atrocity. “It is not enough to call it chaotic or lawless; that would be too kind. Libya is a machine built to grind Black bodies into dust. The auctions today carry the same cold calculations as those centuries ago: a man reduced to the strength of his arms, a woman to the curve of her back, a child to the potential of their years.”

Naima’s present situation is one of many. Libya has become a graveyard for Black migrants, a place where the dehumanization of Blackness is neither hidden nor condemned. Traffickers operate openly, fueled by impunity and the complicity of systems that turn a blind eye to this horror. And the world, Yambio reminds us, looks the other way:

“Libya is Europe’s shadow, the unspoken truth of its migration policy—a hell constructed by Arab racism and fueled by European indifference. They call it border control, but it is cruelty dressed in bureaucracy.”

As Trump embarked on a major international diplomatic trip to Middle East, consisting of major investments worth billions of dollars and vice versa, he declared in Saudi Arabia that he is lifting all sanctions on Syria, as all of Syrian population rejoiced. Trump mentioned "It's their time to shine".

It remains to be seen how Syria will pull itself out from the remains of Assad-era's broken economy and tight international sanctions, as it continues to get shelled by Israeli forces and whether this announcement will have any effect in Israeli policy towards Syria.

Israel, one of US' major ally in the region was not on Trump's visiting stops, signalling a widening rift between the two.

US has agreed to a cessation in its trade war with China which saw each other climb tit-for-tat tariffs that rose over 100%.

With the new cessation, both countries have gone back to almost the same tariffs to before the trade war began, with US declaring a halt to any changes for 90 days.

China, with it's market almost stalling in US, has been seeking alternative trade partners as it ventured into the Latin American investments as Colombia welcomed Chinese construction of its metro train programme, despite US' warnings and protests. It remains to be seen if this can escalate to sanctions on any countries accepting Chinese investments.

As ceasefire talks on the Russo-Ukrainian war began in Turkiye as the mediator between the two countries, Ukraine protested that Russia sent just a low level delegation instead of Putin coming himself as Zelenskyy did. The talks concluded with a deal of an exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.

A major clash in Libya, Tripoli ensued after the assassination of a security head known as Abdel Ghani Al Kikli of SSA (Stability Support Apparatus) by the 444th Infantry Brigade which claimed 6 lives. Several government security forces and militias are intertwined as one under the internationally recognised GNU (Government of National Unity). These clashes within militias are the result of improper coordination within the government that fuels paranoia of who controls what.

Death toll in Gaza has crossed the grim milestone of more than 53,000 as bombardment of Gaza continues amid complete blockade by Israel. An American Israeli citizen was released by Hamas before the recent ground offensive which has been named "Operation Gideon's chariots" was announced by the Israeli military recently. This has potential to add more to the casualties in Gaza. Netanyahu has announced whether ceasefire or not, the Israeli military will be annexing Gaza indefinitely.

About 200 soldiers of Burkina Faso have been killed by the onslaught of Al Qaeda in West Africa. Ibrahim Traore, interim leader of Burkina Faso sees a daunting task after expelling French diplomats and the last of their soldiers and seeking Russian help in consolidation of the region's control. But with incidents like the ambush of Russian Africa Corp fighters by Daesh and the recent mass killing of Burkinese soldiers by Al Qaeda show this doesn't seem simple.
