“Why are you like this?” Steve groaned flopping backward, his head narrowly missing the wall.

“Dude, be careful!” Eddie shrieked.

“What?”

“My bed is not as big as yours, you nearly scalped yourself.”

“I- Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“Oops.” Steve chuckled.

“That is not an appropriate response, what the fuck Stevie, do you want to get a concussion?”

“No? But I’ve already gotten two, what’s the big deal?”

“You- no, that’s not- that doesn’t make it okay!”

“Sorry.”

“Holy shit Steve, you seriously need to start valuing yourself.”

“Sorry.” Steve muttered again, sitting up.

“Ste-”

“I said I’m sorry.”

“You- Stop that.”

“Sor-”

“Stevie, sweetheart, please stop, you didn’t- you didn’t do anything wrong, you just… I wish you’d be a little more careful.”

“Yeah.” Steve sighed, “Sor- yeah.” He brought his knees up to his chest and rested his chin on top of them.

“Steve.” Eddie tapped his thigh with his toes. Steve looked over at him again. “You don’t owe me an apology, I just don’t want you to get hurt.” Steve nodded. “I mean it, you didn’t do anything.”

“You seemed kinda mad.” Steve turned away again, resting his chin back on his knees.

“I’m not mad. I promise. I just don’t want you to get hurt.” Steve nodded. “Stevie, I mean it, I am not mad.” Another nod. “Steve.”

“I know.” Steve mumbled, making him sound completely unbelievable. Eddie sighed.

“Okay, come here.” Eddie held his arms out and swung his legs to the sides. “You clearly need a hug.” Would that hug kill Eddie? Maybe. But Steve definitely needed it. Steve looked at him again, slightly warily, but scooted over anyway and leaned against Eddie as he wrapped his arms around him. Yeah, hugging Steve definitely felt good. He could only hope Steve could feel a tiny fraction of Eddie’s relief.

“Hey, you know what.” Jeff smiled, brightly at the group. “What if I drove Eddie’s van and you guys cuddled in the back?”

“Firstly, Steve has his own car.” Eddie answered. “Secondly, you only have your permit, not a license. Thirdly, I don’t think Steve wants to do that.”

“By ‘that’ do you mean ride in your van while someone without a license drives or cuddle? Because I definitely want to cuddle but I will literally run away if Jeff gets in the driver's seat.”

“Rude.” Jeff smacked his arm and Steve laughed.

“What if I drove?” Gareth asked.

“You don’t even have your permit!” Jeff argued.

“Yeah, no, definitely running away. I’ve already been in a car with a middle schooler driving before and I am never, ever, doing that again.”

“What?” Eddie questioned and the other two stared at him with wide eyes.

“I was unconscious for most of it.” Steve rubbed the back of his neck. Somehow all of their eyes got wider. “It was… um, after that fight I had with Billy? The kids were… uh, taking me to the hospital.”

“Shit.” Jeff whispered.

“Shit is right. Jesus Christ!” Eddie yelled. “What the hell? He fought you in front of your children?”

“They’re not my children, but yeah, I guess.” Steve shrugged.

“No. I babysit a small group, sometimes. But, yeah, uh, Billy showed up one night and threatened Lucas so I punched him. And then lost, miserably.”

“Hold on, I know Hargrove’s an asshole but what the fuck is doing going around threatening children? What?” Jeff questioned.

“I don’t know.” Steve sighed, rubbing his forehead. “I don’t think he threatens every kid he sees if that was what you're picturing. He just didn’t like that Max and Lucas were hanging out.”

“Since when does he get to dictate the socialization of middle schoolers?” Jeff continued.

“He doesn’t.” Steve answered. “He just thinks he gets to control Max 'cause she’s his stepsister.”

“Oh.” Jeff nodded.

“Poor kid.” Gareth added.
