speaking of, icymi in a panel show miracle earlier this year an anonymous source provided beautiful archival copies of the first 12 series of nmtb — so this is the perfect time to revisit its classic era!!

junior taskmaster just wrapped up its first season! very wholesome, for the whole family (don't forget to check out the taskmaster podcast discussions for each episode, hosted by ed gamble!)

there were some great eps of cats does countdown this year but this one was probably my standout<3

because this series is on sky so we have to be careful circulating it, not everyone got a chance to watch rob beckett's smart tv when it aired this year! some of the panel guests include natasia demetriou, nicola coughlan, david tennant, romesh, and alan davies, among others

Random Greek Deity Facts

- Artemis has been associated with horses in the past.

- Ares has associations with owls.

- There are ancient gravestones with reliefs on them that historians still cannot tell if the art is of Dionysus or Jesus.

- It is common for historians to struggle identifying if a statue is of Artemis or Apollo because they often look so much alike.

- Hephaestus is a god of fire.

- Maia, the Mother of Hermes, was thought to assist in raising both Dionysus and Hephaestus.

- Hypnos is said to live in a massive cave, sleeping with thousands of his sons.

- Rather than blood, Greek gods are said to have something called Ichor running through their veins; no one is quite sure what "Ichor" actually is.

- Both Apollo and Artemis are deities of light; it is not just Apollo. Along with this, it is believed Leto may also be a goddess of light.

- Eros has been depicted as the child of Aphrodite and Ares, the child of Ouranos and Aphrodite, the child of solely Aphrodite, the child of Poros and Penia, the child of Ouranos and Gaia, the child of Zephyrus and Iris, and a primordial being who simply came into being. So, where did Eros actually come from? Your guess is as good as any.

Creating 95 NPC students was a lot of initial work but now it saves me a lot of work because I can just randomly generate groups of people to be wherever people go like when someone goes to the pool and asks who else is already there

Was troubleshooting an issue with a program where I wanted it to run multiple parallel subprocesses only for most of them to seemingly stall. Turns out it was because I didn't know how the multiprocessing function I was using runs in the background.

There's a Python class called Pool() and it has a function map() which takes a function and a list of arguments. Pool will run parallel instances of the function with every item in the argument list you give it.

I assumed that the way it would work was if I allow Pool to run p subprocesses and there are n arguments in my list, Pool would run the first p arguments in my list and whenever one subprocess finished, Pool would start a new subprocess with the next available argument.

Turns out that Pool instead breaks the argument list into smaller sublists and assigns each subprocess one of those sublists. So instead of assigning the first subprocess to handle the first argument, then the next subprocess the next, etc. It assigns the first x arguments to be handled by subprocess 1, the next x arguments to subprocess 2, etc.

The issue I had was I had 922 files I needed to process and the runtime was directly related to the file sizes. The smallest file was 5.6 KB and the largest was 229.8 MB. I sorted the file names in my argument list by file size from largest to smallest expecting the largest files to be processed first and then the subprocesses would gradually work on the smaller ones.

Instead, all the largest files got assigned to a single subprocess. It probably was assigned 60% of the total workload. And every subsequent subprocess would be handed smaller and smaller pieces of the workload.

So those subprocesses weren't stalled. Pool ran out of tasks for them to do and the whole thing had to wait on the subprocesses that were given all the heavy tasks I was hoping to divide across them.

It would have been faster to completely randomize the list first.

3. “A new hobby or interest you picked up?”

Idk if it is kinda a hobby or not, buuuutttt in a way…..

ig my new(ish) kinda hobby is collecting/buying DVDs, particularly DVDs of my special interest/featuring and/or involving my special interests!! (for example; most of the DVDs that I’ve had my parents buy for me are mostly Monty Python and/or HFC-oriented, either (a) they star and/or feature some of the actual Pythons (whether in a big role, in a small role/a cameo, etc), (b) they star and/or feature the actors who starred as the Pythons in the BBC 4 MP tv biopic “Holy Flying Circus” (2011) (again, whether in a big role, a small role/a cameo, etc), and/or (c) in a rarest of ALL rare moment(s) where the stars align, *possibly* both an actual Python(s) AND a HFC Python(s) are in this show/movie together (whether they share a scene together or separately, etc))

Idk why, whether subconsciously or not, but I have and have had a special and new appreciation for DVDs when collecting/buying them. Idk whether it’s maybe a childhood thing or something (I used to have a few DVDs as a kid), but just the thought of just physically OWNING a piece of media in your hands and having it on my shelves makes me very happy fr 🥰. Whilst I do equally love appreciate streaming and its convenience, I do also love DVDs and I personally think both can co-exist together for everyone’s enjoyment!

Whilst I do literally sweat at the fearful thought of possibly accidentally breaking my DVD disk or possibly my DVD disk just annoyingly pausing at a random point in the film/episode of a tv show, I think my utter love of DVDs kinda far outweighs the bad imo. Again, this is just me personally!

7. “An obsession that disappeared as suddenly as it came?”

Suffice to say……no, not really.

My obsessions have mostly been intact and are never going to leave me nor disappear from me methinks.

That’s actually one of my personal fears tbh. That my obsession(s) WILL leave me and disappear if I suddenly don’t feel as interested in it/them anymore, that I’ll become an empty husk with no personality whatsoever. I know that sounds kind of silly, but it’s one of my genuine fears if it were to happen to me in the future. I do wish to make peace with that fact sooner, otherwise I might possibly feel broken and emotionally shattered from it all if it DOES happen to me.

BUT, also weirdly simultaneously, I am aware of the inevitability of it all, and that I’ll try to get through this fear of mine.

12. “Do you end this year with the same celebrity crushes & comfort characters that you started it with?”

Again, technically yes!!

Albeit if I’m very obsessed with a new movie/tv show (particularly a celebrity crush(es) and/or comfort character(s)), then I will ADD said new celebrity crush(es) and/or comfort character(s) to my ever growing list of existing celebrity crush(es) and comfort character(s)!

Examples of a new celebrity crush and comfort character, among others ofc but these 2 particularly, that I’ve gained this past year are these:

Celebrity Crush : Tom Fisher (his real surname is Browne, but his stage/professional surname is Fisher). I’ve first gained a crush on him from when he was in “Holy Flying Circus” (2011), when he was ALSO playing my OTHER existing celebrity crush, Graham Chapman! Everything from his FINE ASF beauty, his mannerisms and wiseness and quotes and gayness of Graham was just *mwah* PERFECT-O 😘👌!! and his voice in general is just….VERY VERY VERY sexy indeed!

After watching HFC, I just went down a bit of a rabbit hole (and still am in a bit of a continuing rabbit hole lol) of seeing all the other films and TV shows that he’s been involved in! There’s 2 films of his where he plays the main character, those being “Treacle Jr” (2010) and “The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz” (2000), where’s he absolutely great fr acting wise!! I’m still on the pilgrimage to watch EVERY single movie and tv show that he’s ever starred in (whether in a main role or a supporting role) and/or directed cuz HES THAT AWESOME AND SEXY AHHH!!! (also I literally have a sideblog dedicated to this beautiful asf man fr, that’s how much I’m in love with Tom Fisher frfr)

Comfort Character : Roddy (played by Graham Chapman) from “Doctor in Trouble” (1970)

I honestly only watched this otherwise…..ehh ok film for and only for Graham, and this did NOT disappoint fr!! Roddy is a CAMPY AS GAY FUCK 🏳️‍🌈💅✨ICON✨💅🏳️‍🌈 FR!! His (Roddy’s) camera is so cute and I love how he’s unapologetically and authentically his queer asf self on this cruise ship 🛳️ 🚢 full of (presumably) mostly straight people lol! Honestly SLAY QUEEN 💅💅 Fave comfort character of 2024 imo goes to…..Roddy the Campy Gay Photographer 🏳️‍🌈📸!!

17. “Wild card - Something else that you really want to mention/talk about?

Actually there IS smth I really wanna talk about!

Ok so, I mentioned my fave actor (that being British actor Rufus Jones, who also played Terry Jones in HFC) on a post/tweet I made on Bluesky (which from what I heard is basically a less toxic version of Twitter), and to my utter surprise, HE RESPONDED BY RETWEETING IT EARLIER TODAY AHHH!!!!

It honestly surprised me when I saw the retweet, like I couldn’t in a MILLION YEARS thought he’d retweet it!! It honestly made me very happy and I think it’ll serve as a very happy moment in the last day of 2024!! That one of my other fave actors (Rufus Jones) who played my other fave Python (Terry Jones) from my fave biopic responded to me!! Honestly an absolutely amazing surprise frfr!!!

Myself and my best friend decided to take the GMAT test together in a month- yes, a massive stretch but the pressure may work better for me. I need to improve my rate of actually following through with work that I start, so I'm going to start and not stop with the GMAT and finally tackle some daunting assignments today. Got tons of random stuff on the to-do list today, so seeing it all laid out here helps tackle each task one by one. Reading at a 50s-themed cafe- ft. some deep fried halloumi sticks because my arteries can go sue me. Lille's Kingdom Events Generator

It is done-ish! And by that I mean the most basic form of this lil idea I had is ready to be unleashed on the world.

But Lille, what even is this?

Why thank you for asking, audience in my head. This is a random generator that reads in a list of events and a list of kingdoms and gives you random events that make sense to happen to said kingdoms based on requirements. Kinda like everyones beloved ROS, but instead of being for single households usually, it's on a more neighborhood scale and has a few more ways for you to influence which events roll.

I am bad at explaining it, but I promise it makes sense.

Is it necessarily a sims thing? Absolutely not! I am sure you could use this for writing prompts or random events in a TTRPG campaign or whathaveyou. But my main thought was "medieval simmers would love to have a random thing to throw natural disasters or war refugees from whatever fictional 'other' kingdoms are around in their minds at them" because I AM that medieval simmer.

So here's what you get:

An .exe which randomizes things, ala ROS, but while taking requirements into account.

An XML with sample events to generate. Are they good? Eh, they'll do. This is why it's an XML, so you can edit it and someone smarter than me can make a cooler version.

An XML with sample Kingdoms, upon which the requirements for the events are tested. They are named A,B,C,D and E and just had random-ish values thrown at them. Edit them. make them your own!

Huge thanks to @clouseplayssims for throwing some inspiration in the form of every single ROS list in existence at me and being one of my initial guinea pigs, as well as enabling the silly little idea in the first place.

Note: Due to how I turned the base python code into an exe, some antiviruses flag it as a possible Trojan. I do not know how to fix that. I can only say that me and my 200 lines of code do not want to damage your computer or steal your monies, I promise.

Further note: I compiled and tested this on Windows 10. It might work on other operating systems, but i make no promises. If anyone is running into issues like that and or knows how to compile a python script, please let me know, i am more than happy to pass you the sourcecode so more people can have a functioning version of this.

Also definitely feel free to share your edited events/kingdoms files. My examples are thrown together haphazardly and it SHOWS.

Also - you can totally use it for non medieval things. Just write modern events and ignore the fact that the program calls things in the kingdom file kingdoms. They could be cities, or planets, or whatever else you can come up with!
