rating help request!
to anyone who has read What We Pretend to Be, what would you suggest it be rated? It's not sexually explicit although sex does /occur/ in the plot. It's dark at times; the main characters do kill people, and there's a lot of discussion of war, religion, grief, and moral ambiguity
Here are the tags is that helps

Coming in with another chart because my neurodivergency demands it! This time I wanna touch on writing with "Tone versus Age Demographic"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The difference between the two is this.
Tumblr media
Tone is the degree in what themes and mood your piece conveys. Whereas darker tones of drama, tragedy, and horror make a story heavier, comedy and romance can make it more light. While action and mystery can vary depending on how it is handled in the piece.
Tumblr media
Age Demographic is what age group your target audience is and what degree of the following can occur or be implied. Drugs, Cursing, Sex, Violence. This usually influences how media is rated (G, PG, PG-13, PG-17, M)
Tumblr media
Here is an example of a few stories on where they can lie on the chart.
Tumblr media
For stories in the gray area of tone, they vary between comedic and dramatic moments. The overall mood tends to be adventurous, but does not have to be. Usually there is character growth over the course of the story, but not always.
Tumblr media
Stories that are lighter in tone are more comedic, feel good, and generally have a 'lesson' the characters learn. Sometimes there is a status quo the show gets back to by the end of the episode, but not always the case.
Tumblr media
Darker toned stories go into more dramatic and philosophical inquiries that can go into topics not usually discussed. Endings tend to be mixed from tragic, to melancholy, to bitter sweet. Nothing is certain as far as the ending goes.
Tumblr media
For demographic, the General Audience or all audiences is intended for family viewing. Usually a lighter tone is good for a younger audience to avoid emotional trauma. But for PG stories with parental guidance, it's good to get topics of conversation going and to get them introduced to tougher subject matters, like death and confrontation.
Tumblr media
PG-7 are usually for audiences seven and up. Here we get a bit more variety between drama, adventure action, and comedy. Violence in these pieces usually have to be martial arts and/or fantastical (ex magic), guns, shattered glass, and knives are usually prohibited. There's no cursing. Certain subject matters can be IMPLIED (usually with drugs being replaced with potions and chemical formulas. And sex being implied through innuendo).
Tumblr media
Teen demographic goes more into cursing (ex, damn, hell, and crap), sexual content being implied more or talked about, censored nudity, talk of drug use, and more graphic violence with blood being seen. Anime/manga has more content teen and up as well that does not have to touch on comedy.
Tumblr media
Adult media (18+, M, R ratings), are much more explicit with the above subject matters. There's more graphic sex/nudity on screen. Explicit drug use. More adult cursing (s***, f***, c**) as well as sexual talk. The violence is much more graphic with blood, intestines, bone, mutilation and so on.
Tumblr media
And stories don't always stay in one place. There are plenty of examples of a story growing up with it's audience and changing tone as the plot develops. Overall this is to show that not every kid's show is a silly comedy, they can be dark and dramatic. And not every adult show is serious and brooding, they can be comforting and comedic.
Tumblr media
For my comic Legend Catcher, it's a Action Dramedy (Gray in Tone) that's rated 18+ for an adult audience for:
Explicit Language
Nudity
Graphic Violence
Drug Use
I know who my audience is and is NOT for (not intended for young audiences), and they know how it will make them feel.
So when writing, it's good to think about who you want your audience to be. What themes you want to touch on. And how much you feel safe to include without getting into trouble.

MY QUESTION: So why are there so many pansies in university classrooms who need trigger warnings in order to read great texts or view great art?

My Rating System Explained
General Rating
4.5-5: Fabulous, loved it, will reread, we were DOING SHIT with this one. A top recommendation.
4-4.5: Very good to great, super enjoyable, definitely recommend to virtually anyone.
3.5-4: Solid stylistically, but I can't say that it stood out for me. It may be a taste thing; there may be genuine flaws that took it down from an instant rec. I might recommend it to a very specific audience.
3-3.5: This was not for me, but it may be for someone else.
2.5-3: Flawed and difficult for me to enjoy, even if there were bright moments. Anything under a 3 is a book I really wouldn't recommend to anyone. This could also be a book wherein it was all going so well... and then we got derailed with a horrible creative decision or problematic content.
2-2.5: I was either so incredibly bored that this was hard for me to finish, or it was just a really displeasing read.
Anything under a 2: [Robert De Niro Voice] we're in a terrible situation
Heat Index
8-10: We're in the erotic romance range, with 3+ explicit sex scenes (defined as: a scene in which one partner made the other partner orgasm), often on the kinkier side. This is accompanied by more general sexual tension and interplay beyond the sex scenes.
6-7: At least 3 explicit sex scenes, but they could be on the less descriptive side (see: Lorraine Heath). This is accompanied by sexual tension and heat beyond the sex.
4-5: At least 1 sex scene, but the explicitness is debatable. Borderline closed door.
2-4: Closed door.
Under 2: 'Tis sexless.

WTF Why is the FNAF movie a 15 in the UK?
Tumblr media
How overly offended is our rating system? This is a kids horror franchise! It's a pg-13 in US. Why is it less in America?

For these books I’m reading which is the poll winner (The Vampires of El Norte) and When the Moon Hatched- I’m going to be trying out the CAWPILE rating system.
For those of you unfamiliar the CAWPILE system is this:
C Characters
A Atmosphere/Setting/Worldbuilding
W Writing Style
P Plot
I Intrigue
L Logic/Relationships
E Enjoyment
These parameters are each rated in a 1-10 scale and then you add them up and divide by 7. That gives you a number or a decimal number which is 1-10 and the number coincides with a 1-5 star rating.
0-2.2 ⭐️
2.3- 4.5 ⭐️⭐️
4.6-6.9 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
7-8.9 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
9-10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The official ratings say 0-1.1 is no stars, and 1.2-2.2 is one star; but I don’t do 0 stars and so I lumped 0 and 1 stars together.
So example:
C- 6
A- 5
W- 9
P- 7
I- 8
L- 6
E- 8
Which then tallies to a total of 49.
49 divided by 7 is 7.
So by that the example book has a rating of 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

This scene from the 1992 videogame Night Trap was brought up in a senate hearing as supposedly promoting violence against women. This senate hearing later led to the creation of the ESRB. Night Trap was among the first video games to receive an 'M' rating. Do you think it really deserved it?

Rating System
10/10 - I will re watch this, I will buy merch for it, and It's probably in my top 30.
9/10 - I will either happily rewatch this, or I will want to buy merch for it because I like the characters.
8/10 This was an awesome seasonal anime, but the chance I will re-watch this is low. I might go read the manga though!
7/10 - Hey, I watched it! and probably finished it! A potato chip of a show that's worth having on as background.
6/10 - I probably dropped this part way through the season for one reason or another.
5/10 or below - I'm probably not even going to bother writing anything unless it was a show I was excited for that was horribly adapted or bombed spectacularly.

Since I've seen examples both on here and AO3 lately with alarming frequency, I figured a PSA was needed.
If you talk about sex in your fic, it's not rated G.
The rating system exists for a reason. There's 4 levels for a reason. You definitely have options between G and E. G is like a kids movie. Yes, kids movies will sometimes include wink wink nudge nudge jokes for parents, but there's a big difference between that and "Yeah, [name] refuses to go over there without calling first ever since he walked in on them fucking" or outright describing sex (yes, I have seen this in a fic that was rated G). Use common sense in your choices.

Book Review: My Rating System Explained
For my ratings, I did a lot of research into how others do their spicy ratings and star ratings. In the end, I matched my star ratings to Goodreads. Goodreads states 1-Star is "did not like it", 2-Star is "it was okay", 3-Star is "I liked it", 4-Star is "really liked it", and 5-Star is "it was amazing". For the spice levels, I chose a combination of the ratings out there online as well as my own perceptions. I also use romance.io for some inspiration with spice ratings. With that said, here are my ratings:
Tumblr media
⭐️: I did not finish or I did not enjoy it at all. ⭐️⭐️: It was okay but I disliked more of it than I liked. ⭐️⭐️⭐️: I liked it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: I really liked it. I would absolutely recommend it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: The best. I would consider this a favorite.
Tumblr media
🔥: No spice. Not explicit. Brief romance scenes. 🔥🔥: Closed door. Short romance scenes. 🔥🔥🔥: Open door. Infrequent spice. More descriptive scenes. 🔥🔥🔥🔥: Explicit open door. More frequent spice, kinks, etc. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥: Explicit open door. Spice is the plot.
I'd love to learn how you rate your books!
