The school year is winding down and summer vacation is on the horizon, so I am once again pulled back to 1988, my early days of discovering comic books and my fixation on the Gamer’s Handbook of the Marvel Universe for TSR’s Marvel Super Heroes RPG. The original set of four released in 1988, alphabetically listing a gigantic slice of characters from the Marvel universe, in alphabetical order, featuring full-color model sheets, on loose leaf paper for maximum convenience. You got histories, powers, the whole nine. And because the Marvel comics universe was alive, beginning in 1989, additional Character Update volumes saw release.

This is the first, and largest, of the Updates. The majority is new characters, most of them losers and second-rate villains who appeared in an issue or two, like Meteor Man. I love those folks best, probably. There is a little bit of catch-up, too, fitting in folks like Beta-Ray Bill and Prowler who didn’t make it into the primary reference. Some marquee debuts, too, like Venom and the X-Babies (lol).

Then there are the storyline updates. Hulk turned gray, Inferno was bedeviling the X-folks, Armor Wars was wrapping up. All these events and more needed to be accounted for in the RPG, and so they were. Its this stuff that makes these books an unparalleled resource for the history of the Marvel universe at that moment in time.

Although small and rodentine in appearance, bestial human shrews are actually fierce, voracious and hyperactive omnivores armed with a mouthful of sharp teeth, poisonous saliva (Type A, paralysis), and a decided preference for meat. They can make a bite attack (SV +8/ DMG 1d10+poison) as well as use one-handed weapons; however, their tiny fists deliver a punch that inflicts only d4 damage. Because they are quite diminutive as far as humanoids go, they cannot use heavy two handed weapons such a battle axes, pikes, halberds, pikes, heavy crossbows, longbows, great swords, chainsaws and similar large weapons. Likewise, discharging powerful firearms such as shotguns and high caliber rifles will knock them back 1d3 meters and down, expending their next round as they get up again. Humanoid shrews are swift-acting and alert (+1 initiative), quick for their size (9m), capable climbers (1d2 skill points in climbing) and adept at hiding and sneaking (add 1d3 skill points in stealth).

Morgana le Fey

A try for a children's book aesthetic for the face of this acrylic character painting. The concept had originally been made for a computer RPG but wasn't used, so I finished her for myself. Naturally I had to repaint her face… twice? because I got carried away and gave her regular proportions. The background was flooded with sepia and cyan ink. I had planned on using that on her face in the pre-raffaelite way, but went to opaque too soon for that - I will have to try again for the effect in another piece. The cloak's pattern is image transfer of patterned paper; at first I was upset it flaked off in some places (result of using it ion paper instead of a primed surface, I believe) but then I found it underlines the idea that this is not just a posh sorceress but has something other than her looks to care about. The jewellery is drawn in gold hue ink, the moon with an acrylic marker. I used Rohrer&Klingner ink, Daler+Rowney system 3 acrylics, and Molotow acrylic marker. The process also includes and underdrawing with coloured pencils but here they have become entirely covered. "Morgana le Fey", A4, acrylics and inks on Bristol carton.

Harp's Run is prosaic, a home to a handful of families and simple, hard-working folk from the country's heartland. Horses roam free to the East, near the wood, farm animals bah and oink from nearby pens. The only time travelers stop by this sleepy town is on the occasion they need to stop by Clemp's general store to restock on supplies. What could ever go wrong?

Foundry Street cuts through the industrial chaos of Precinct Six, a vital artery in Ravnica’s machine of war and commerce. Massive foundries and forge-halls line the street, where armor and weaponry for the Boros Legion are churned out alongside illicit arms sold in the shadows.

At the heart of the street stands a colossal anvil, a relic from an age when titanic beings still walked the city openly. Only the most skilled blacksmiths—masters sanctioned by angels, demons, or giants—are permitted to use it, forging weapons of such scale and power that they are whispered of in guild halls and battlefields alike.

While the official presence is thin, the alleys are ruled by Rakdos cultists and guildless gangs, turning Foundry Street into a volatile crucible where industry, ambition, and anarchy collide.

Bestial Human Porcupine Hand drawn Ink art by William McAusland, writing by Colin Chapman

Armored with a multitude of long quills, humanoid porcupines are dangerous to tackle even if they are otherwise inoffensive and slow. These bestial humans are herbivores capable of digesting most vegetable matter including twigs, bark, pine needles, and other foodstuffs that might be considered inedible. Their quills act as the Spines mutation (TME, page 73), providing armor, adding an additional 1d6 damage to the porcupine-man’s unarmed attacks (fist or kick thus does 2d6 damage), and automatically cut and pierce the insides of any animal that swallows the rodentoid for 2d6 damage per round. Except for specially designed junk and scrap relic armor, humanoid porcupines cannot wear relic armor; unless they spend an hour a day clipping off the quills with wire cutters or a small saw. These quills do not cover the head, limbs, stomach or groin area, and cannot be shot out unless the porcupinoid also has the Throwing Quills mutation.
