Okay finally I'm clearing this round. Love this run, it's absolutely my favourite Question stuff, but this list is going to be roughly nine hundred entries long and avoiding getting derailed into deeper analysis is Not Easy.

Holy shit there's an actual timeline, I forgot about this! This issue takes place about three years after Vic and Shiva last fought.

Vic explicitly saying that he's reaffirming his masculinity by punching people immediately after getting his ass kicked by Shiva is exactly the kind of thing I'm trying not to get derailed by.

Every time someone mischaracterizes Shiva I want to hit them over the head with the "I believe in letting people do as they wish" panel until they stop.

There's some fascinating analysis of policing in this issue. Myra explicitly acknowledges the similarities between cops and gangs, but believes that the police generally have some moral compass guiding them even if it isn't a necessary part of policing. She holds that authorized violence is a better option than complete disorder, even with how corrupt Hub City's police have been shown to be. Vic is a lot less sure about that, but he does seem to be willing to go along with Myra's leadership, if only because he doesn't want to abandon her. I'm adding "analysis of cops-as-gangs in the Question versus No Man's Land" to the list of topics I want to dive into after I finish this.

Vic's quasi-religious relationship with Shiva is. Well. There's a lot to unpack there.

It's interesting that Vic's very open about thinking people deserve punishment, despite not wanting to punish.

Annual #2

Okay mood. I also sometimes wish I was an animal with clear instincts.

Something about how early Vic is written here rubs me the wrong way, but it's hard to articulate what. I think it's just something about his speech patterns - too informal? Honestly it might just be that I don't believe that a Ditko-inspired Vic would fuck.

Before I actually got into GA comics I thought the couple chili jokes I had seen were fans latching onto one thing but no. He's asking after other people's chili mid-investigation.

Once again, the only comics where I like unnecessary Batman cameos. Extremely good that Vic just posts at him.

Ollie sucks shit at the secret identity thing. I mean, unsurprising, but dude.

This whole issue's kinda shaky. Lots of interesting moments, but I wouldn't be surprised if the schedule for the Annual was pretty tight - even in the issues I like less of the run, the writing is strong, and it just doesn't hit quite right in this.

Green Arrow Annual #2

See, this is better. The pacing's rough at the start, but all the dialogue is more what I'd expect.

Ollie clicks so well with Tot and Myra. I'm glad the Question mostly stays self-contained, but he makes a good recurring guest.

Big fan of how this ties back into the last adventure in Santa Prisca. Bringing old plot threads back to contrast them with new themes is always appreciated.

Man I gotta read more Green Arrow once this is done.

I'm a little surprised there isn't more discussion of what Myra plans to do to shelter the addicts who were squatting in the building, given that the story's very concerned with the mundane.

More scraps of who Vic used to be.

Shiva taking interest in everyday people is such a good bit of character work. She likes people who are good at what they do, and she likes the idea of destruction and rebuilding, and she doesn't mind people being into her as long as they're respectful - it grounds her.

The kiss obliterates me every time.

Vic grappling with the idea he might not be opposed to murder is a striking moment. He's had lots of moments where he considered it, but this is a fight he picked with someone he doesn't know.

The contrast between soldiers, police, citizen patrols, and Vic is another thing I have to resist getting derailed by. Even when he's at his most violent, he still doesn't carry a weapon.

I have complicated feelings about Jackie and Harold. They're both ableist stereotypes, but I like that Myra talks to Jackie like you would any other young kid, and there's an attempt to do something good with their relationship even if it doesn't succeed. It's interesting enough for me to want to poke at it, at least.

Harold, on the other hand... urgh. It's just not good, and he's used for cheap drama. I see what the goal was, that does not make it suck less. Still better than his later appearances in Batman.

I like that Myra's self-aware about how bad her mental health is, while Vic pretends he does not see it.

The drama in this one is clunky, but the insights into Myra are solid.

Richard's wheelchair fight is cool.

In the letter column: the actual letter is ableist and misinterprets Shiva, but the idea of her being disabled has stuck with me. I would never want it to happen in a comic because there's no way it would be handled remotely well, but I already have a lot of thoughts about Vic's psychosis swag, so.

It's only been a few issues since the last time other people using Vic's mask was a plot point, but it's good here so I don't care.

I like the dream sequence, but I do feel like it's a missed opportunity that Vic doesn't get to consider what leaving would mean between the dream and telling Myra. The dream is introspection to an extent, sure, but it's a big moment.

Richard being able to walk is jarringly stupid, along with being ableist. I would be willing to give it the benefit of the doubt if he was an ambulatory wheelchair user who could walk several miles with ~kung fu willpower~ and hadn't told Vic for the same reasons, it would be bad but not more than a lot of stuff I've been rolling my eyes at, but no.

She loves him!!!

This ending. Fuck.

And with that, we hit 1990 and the end of the largest chunk of Question comics. Renee's first appearance is still a couple years out, and there are a few minis that come first, but from here on in it's going to be a lot less plain book review and a lot more actual appearance tracking and date checking.

that pairing everyone likes but you’re like “lol no”: dinahollie. look, maybe if she were treated more as an equal character and not as the GF who gets hurt for his manpain and then the follow-up plot wasn't hypnosis therapy where she had no agency but ollie did and reacted about it to assure the reader she still felt comfortable having sex with ollie i'd be less negative on it. you may be like "well that's one specific instance in canon, not the whole ship" OK but it's one specific instance in canon that many fans rec as a good green arrow arc (and sometimes even as a good Dinah arc X_X), so I think it's fair for it to inform my opinion of the ship. I'll probably get less negative as I read more of the characters, but right now what I see I am very 'lol no' about. however its not the only GA content I've read, and in general the theme of her being treated just as the GF stands, even if the writers aren't as weird about it as Grell was.

favorite non-romantic pair: prolly dinah and babs, but in canon :P

“Tim’s dad decides to be better dad after his wife’s death. Which is unfortunate because he realizes Tim is Robin and immediately decides to keep Bruce away from him”

“Bruce gets another Robin, her name is Steph and she dies within 100 real world days for the crime of... being a Girl and a Robin”

“Tim goes back to being Robin despite his dad’s wishes but that’s okay because his dad is promptly killed off”

Me: there’s a new player in town and it turns out that it’s Jason

Them: but isn’t he dead?

Me: he’s alive because Superboy Prime punched the world really hard and broke reality, you’re just going to have to accept that

Them: ...

Me: ANYWAYS he’s bitter because Batman hasn’t killed the Joker yet to avenge him and so he decides to kill people that aren’t going to reform... he doesn’t succeed, unfortunately

“Steph’s actually alive, by the way, just unimportant”

"Alright, a guy named David Cain saw this lady called Lady Shiva and he wants to have a master martial artist for a daughter so he’s like ‘I’m a martial artist... you’re a martial artist... I’m going to kill your sister’”

“He raised this kid to be an assassin, do you really think he cared enough about her to teach her to speak?”

“Cass kills a guy and then promptly decides she doesn’t like that shit and runs away and ends up adopted by Bruce... because of course she does”

Me: Cass is suicidal for a while until Lady Shiva kills her and cures the problem

Them: no!

Me: but then Shiva wants a rematch because Cass wasn’t trying and then Cass beats but doesn’t kill her

Them: yes!

“She just kinda vibes with Babs and Steph for the rest of this. I’ll give you three guesses why they aren’t used more”

“Now we’re onto the murder child, Damian Wayne. He was raised by the League of Assassins and is Bruce’s blood son”

“He tries to kill Tim to get Robin from him a few times but it’s just kinda brushed aside... just like I’m going to brush it aside right now”

“Bruce dies and Dick is made Batman and his first act as New Dad Of The Family is to kick out Tim and make Damian Robin which I don’t like but I deal with because Dick and Damian are the cutest duo”

“Tim ruins everything between Dick and Damian by bringing Bruce back from where he was trapped in time... no, I don’t really get it, either”

Me: Bruce and Damian are the Batman and Robin for a while but then Damian dies

Them: does he come back?

Me: of course he does it’s DC but first... it is time to introduce The Boy: Duke

“Duke and a bunch of other kids decided they were going to help out Gotham as unofficial vigilantes and a lot of them get seriously hurt but they’re irrelevant”

Me: I forget a lot of what happens during his plotline but he jumps out of a police car and jumps off a bridge and gets superpowers so --

Them: SUPERPOWERS?

Me: yeah, he makes comic history by being a black guy with powers that aren’t lightning or fire... instead he gets just plain light powers

Me: Duke has parents still

Them: do they die?

Me: no, actually

Them: wow --

Me: they go insane because of Joker Gas and try to kill him

“Alfred dies via Bane around here but because that’s a stupid decision I’ve elected to ignore it”

Them, after I finished: wow, a lot of people died and came back

Me: yeah, I actually left out a bunch of fakeout deaths along the way

KH DnD: Between Dawn to Dusk Session 7

Having a few days left, the team decided to head to the gummi hanger to start learning about the gummi ship roles but a few of the team members had decided to get a few jobs done first.

Batty quickly went to get his belongings from under the bridge in Shanty Town, dealing with some old memories.

Shiva went to the castle to study on the book that Max had given them.

Aithne quickly went shopping for a new cloak, hoping to chat to Max later about interrogating Tony.

Levi, not sure what to do, looked around the main plaza when he saw a strange figure in a grey robe, heading to the burned down weapon’s shop. He kept his distance to this figure and followed him to the burnt building.

Looking inside, he sees a Moogle that seems to have gotten his cloak stuck on some of the rumble. Once Levi lends him a hand, the moogle introduces himself as Rotiart Legoom (Rotti for short), and explains that he was trying to deliver post to the owner of the weapon shop and has to deliver post to the other shops too.

Levi takes Rotti to Aithne, thinking that she would be the best person to aid them since Shiva was busy studying. Aithne had purchased a new robe (which gave her +1 Stealth) before agreeing to help the moogle out. Before long, Batty joined them and the three of them added Rotti in delivering post around Disney Town before heading to Della’s.

The party saw that Shiva was already at Della’s and was ready to learn about the gummi roles. Della thanks the group for their aid in getting the gummi parts back before questioning Rotti. Rotti delivered his letter and started to ask if she knew where the owner of the weapon shop was.

Levi, taking a closer look at Rotti, saw that he didn’t seem like a typical post moogle and looked mire like a rouge, as well as started to see the lies that was coming from Rotti.

When questioned, Rotti decided to leave the group and continue to ‘deliver post’. The rest of the party decided to leave him and focus on the training and roles that Della would tell them for flying an gummi ship of their own.

GUMMI SHIP ROLES

Navigator/Pilot (Wisdom)- Learns how to navigate by using star signs as locations and general knowledge on how to take off, land, keeping the gummi ship stable and teleport other members of the team to other worlds.

Mechanic (Intelligence)- Knows the ins and out of the engine of the gummi ship, they will do the actions needed to warp, boost, and know how much the core of the ship can take before over heating. They are able to improve the heals over time.

Gunner (Dexterity)- This person will have control of the guns on the ship or mini ships, depending how many ships they have.

Captain (Charisma)- The Spokesman of the ship. They will help guide the way with the pilot, make the decisions with the crew They will be the person that will communicate with other ships.

Medic (Constitution)- The main healer on the ship, can aid in healing team members through the use of potions or magic (Must have a good medical check)

Repairs (Strength)- Have the ability to lift replacement ammo, aid the mechanic in repairing the shield or engine.

While the parry was training, Rotti headed to the inn to get information on what had happened to the burnt building, what had happened in the last couple of days and details about the keybearers staying here. The Innkeeper told him the basics but then asked him to leave as he decided to say that he couldn’t afford a milkshake and then pay him double.

The team decided to head back to the inn after their training, the Innkeeper informed them about Rotti’s intentions and told them that they will need to pay for the rooms for the rest of the night.

As part of a deal, Batty managed to negotiate a performance each night in exchange for a cheaper fare for the rooms. After showing off his bard skills, the Innkeeper agreed. Aithne asks Levi if he could contact Max, after a joke or two, Levi got throw to Max and Max had agreed to come down to the Inn.

Meanwhile, Rotti had gone to the barracks where Max was, hoping that he would take a letter to the king. Max, being suspicious, opened the letter, only to be knocked out by gas again. Rotti quickly took two potions and searched for the cells. He tried to distract the guys and catch them off guard with a fire trap but managed to get grappled by one of the Kings Guard.

While listening to Batty’s show, Aithne starts to worry for Max as he is a no-show. She asks Levi to accompany her to the barracks while Shiva says that she will catch up once Batty has finished his set.

When Aithne and Levi get to the barracks, Max spots them and explain that there was a moogle causing trouble and have placed him in the cell, The two of the see the crooks they had caught the day before as well as Rotti.

The two of them try to question Rotti but the Moogle just insists that they touch his pom pom, which one of the beagle boys from the other cell does. Soon Batty and Shiva joins them and discusses that it will be better for Rotti to be guarded while he is staying at Disney Town.

Aithne quickly goes over to Tony to try and question him, only for him to look at Levi and Shiva, saying he won’t talk with them here. Aithne chats to Max about trying again the next day.

Rotti promises to be good, despite trying to break out while the team were talking, and joins the team.

Media's Current Zombie Craze

I feel like I can't be the only one who is getting tired of cliche zombie show attributes.

First, zombie culture has been suffocating our survival horror genre for long enough that most people would behave way differently.

I feel like it should start how it usually does, but have the initial outbreaks be contained, cities evacuated and all. Humans win. Then people start naturally dying and coming back even harder, since everyone thinks it's over. Have that sweep through too fast for our governments to firebomb their cities. Ironically the majority of the "safe places" being whispered about at first will be the cities that were successfully evacuated then contained during the first outbreak.

I want there to be a neckbeard who has been training his whole life and perfecting his zompocalypse survival guide. Katanas and throwables are his preferred weapons, and although his practice does show in performance, he's a bit too high and mighty about it. No one takes him seriously, not because he is wrong, but because his personality is too stereotypical.

Only time they should run into someone trying to save the zombies is in Amish country where internets are few and far between, and society hasn't corrupted everyone with its "technology"

I would like to see someone with some actual immunity for once too. None of this Murphy shit, maybe some support character who isn't 100% essential for the team's survival, but has their place, hopefully has been favorited by the audience by the time it's revealed. When they get to that "killing off favorite characters" phase have them be bit (after at least one other fan fav has died) but not turn. Days of waiting for the fever to set in and nothing. Zombies ignore them now because whatever "virus" is in their system. And idk if you guys noticed, but said immune character is they/them. Maybe by this time no survivors have any clue what even would go into manufacturing a vaccine.

Some anatomical features should be fixed too. Like if a tendon is cut, that muscle is useless. No cripples getting up after zombified. If most of your calf was eaten, you're not chasing anyone down.

Main story setting should be in one of our extreme prepper zones. Somewhere Midwest maybe so you get the Redneck's "government takeover" prep, Native's (long overdue) assimilate and conquer, and the northern "it's too cold to let any outside get in" mindset. Or some east-rocky desert. Missile test sites and fallout shelters built all over during the red scare. Or literally anywhere in the PNW, they've been prepared to fall into the ocean for centuries, and have been harboring every other type of prepper in the US since 9/11. (Too soon?)

Let's see a corrupt cop that everyone puts on the spot with all the group's moral decisions. He has no clue how to do anything, but it all ends up working out. Have the show full of flashbacks to his shady dealings, and he spends every waking moment working towards redemption. Every now and then have them run into someone he has a past with. Let's not put him in a main leadership role though, don't want another Rick Grimes on our hands.

All of our current "knowledge" of zombie survival should be present too. Kill brain kills zombie. Sound attracts more. Take no chances with dead loved ones. Bites make infections, they kill, etc. Anyone who has seen any of the media should have some idea as to what's what. Maybe even give a shout out to them randomly. Like "I saw this in s(x) of The Walking Dead" or something to explain how they know something.

Let's make zombie energy levels relative to feeding. No running top speed when it has been a week since eating. Possibly some jogging if you ate earlier today. Maybe they're at maximum energy they become docile. When they're starving they're sluggish but can't die from starvation, maybe start eating themselves or each other.

In most media the virus only affects humans. Some silly crap exists like zombear, and some more respectable infections exist (dogs in RE), but I prefer the general humans only. With that in mind, threat levels should be scaled. Maybe our heroes stumble upon a bunch of zombies snapping away but unable to move due to lack of muscle from the pack of wolves that has been eating them. Shiva shouldn't've been taken down by zambies. That being said, domestic animals would be easier for the zombie to eat.

I also get fed up with all the gas hunting that goes on. Someone find a tesla with solar capabilities. Larger transport would need gas, but ideally they get posted up somewhere quick, so only need vehicles for scavanging and scouting.

Also get tired of the tiny group vs small group themes. Main characters should slowly rebuild a city. None of the Savior's or other cultesque communities though. Attempt at a smaller representation of how the American government was originally designed to function. This all being in the "city" out in the apocalypse it's a bit more feudal. There will always be a group popping up with some Mad Max ideas on how society should function, but that conflict seems to drive stories, and therefore ratings.

A more accurate representation of the US education system would be nice too. Schools don't teach wilderness survival or farming. Gotta go to votech to learn how to set up a solar power system, and to learn all the repairs that will be needed after. Things like Home Ec were electives so most won't know how to purify their water or cook their own meals.

They rarely address our reliance on technology. Once all the general tech is down, most of our society will be boned. No further explanation required here...

And I think the main character, should be quirky as fuck. Suicidal because of shit life before, but can't seem to die. Keeps getting saved at the last second and stays unsuspected. When they attempt themselves it goes wrong, and if overseen it's intent is mistaken. Essential characters don't quite see eye to eye with them, but never really care enough about a given situation to dispute. Makes friends fairly easy with anyone else, but that could be some prelude to who is getting killed off next, just piling more weight on the depression scale.

I want to see someone whose native language is not English, and no one can translate. Keep the dialogue relevant and toss some subtitle under them, but no one understands other than the viewer.
