This is a very dreamy energy (lol), and feels very nostalgic, very different from the first group message. Maybe a school friend or someone from uni. Lot more angst in this group. Someone feeling very angry with themselves over how things were left between you if you’re not talking, or how they’ve been unable to communicate well if you are in contact. This has a stronger emotional/spiritual connection than like #2, and feels more like a partner/former partner. Hi, Tori. 👋🏽 How are you doing? Any advice for writing fluff?

Hii Star! I’m doing all right, thank you - starting into June with a hopeful mind haha. How about you? I hope you’re doing fine 😊

First of all, I’m very flattered you’re asking me about this - I hope you’ll be able to take something useful from what I’m going to share, I feel very unqualified to give any form of advice lol. XD I don’t really have a specific method for writing fluff, but as I mentally went through my fics, I noticed a few “recurring “ elements that I think can be broken down into three areas: setting, characters, and gestures. I’ll try to explain what I mean by that under the cut.

🫧 1 - Setting

For me, fluff is usually a moment where two people are being comfortable around or with each other. Comfort, safety, the easing of tension, being able to let your guard down - those are all things that I love and lean into when I write fluff. That's why I think that the right setting can already help create the right mood. Anything that enhances that setting - sounds, smells, what the characters feel or how they perceive their surroundings - can help create a nice atmosphere.

Two people simply being at home can create a sense of safety. A couch and a fleece blanket feel warm and familiar. The sound of rain, and the fact that you know they’re safe and dry inside, adds to that cosy atmosphere. They don’t even have to do much, the setting itself already shows a lot. If the same moment would take place during a busy school lunch break, it might still be sweet, but probably not as cosy or tender as it would be in the quiet of home. 

Even an uncomfortable setting can be made fluffy. If you have a scorching hot summer day, which might not exactly be the cosiest place to be, and two people share some ice cream and open up in a heart-to-heart, the setting still makes it feel fluffy. The discomfort of a heat wave becomes more bearable through the ice cream, maybe a cool breeze comes up just as they start talking, or one of them always has cool hands and puts them on the other one’s wrists, cheeks etc. The setting itself might not bring a lot of comfort, but they bring it to each other instead. 

If a fluffy scene is only one of many part of the plot, placing it after a moment of difficulty or high tension can make it feel even more impactful. If they just had to escape some bad guys and are finally safe, that shared moment feels a little more intense because of the contrast. If one of them had a fight with their parents, the hug they get feels more comforting. That release of tension is what can bring some sort of satisfaction, almost like a reward.

🫧 2 - Characters

Each character has their own way of comforting another person, and their own things that bring them comfort. But sometimes, they step out of their comfort zone for the sake of the other - because they know exactly what the other needs - and that’s what can make that gesture feel more meaningful.

Person A isn’t a touchy person, and yet they're willing to give Person B a hug because they know they need it. Person B’s love language might usually be touch, but with Person A, they might have to do something else, and they’re willing to do so because they love them. (Yes, I’m talking about Levihan xD) As readers, we know the characters and their love languages and therefore also notice the effort it might’ve taken them to do that gesture, or all the thought that went into it, which gives it more weight and, to me makes, the entire moment feel so much warmer. 

Setting the context of their relationship can also make shared moments feel fluffy, or fluffier. Keyword love/intimacy, though I’m not talking about the sexual kind, but rather platonic or romantic.

If two people have a crush on each other and one of them braids the other one’s hair, the fact that you know they’re madly in love makes that gesture even sweeter. When they eventually hold hands for the first time, which moves their relationship a little closer to the “they’re together” stage, it makes you kick your feet because that small gesture shows a real and notable shift. A group of friends sitting around a campfire is particularly cosy when you know they've been together since they were little kids. They know each other well and are very close, and that sense of intimacy can be felt.

Just like the setting, the relationship sets the stage for the gestures, making them feel different depending on where the characters stand with each other. So if you have a fluffy scene in mind, it might help to mentally place it at different phases of the characters' relationship to see where it works best.

🫧 3 - Gestures

Most of the gestures I write about I draw from the people around me, or from the things I watch. Usually, I just think about what I would make the characters do if I wanted them to have a good time, what would make them feel better or what they might need in that specific situation, and go from there. For me, probably any slice-of-life situation and any gesture can be fluffy, especially in the right setting. 

I think just as important as the gesture itself is also the other person’s reaction to it - both their physical reaction, and their emotional reaction or thoughts. When you witness a person letting their guard down, and read their thoughts about how safe that hug is making them feel, it can make the scene feel deeper and warmer.

Something that can also enforce the moment is whose point of view you’re getting to see. Person B, for whom holding hands isn’t a big deal, might not think of it as something special - but Person A might be freaking out on the inside. So gauging who might be having a stronger or “more fitting” reaction, and telling the scene from their perspective, can also enhance the sweetness of the moment. 

This ended up being a lot of examples - sorry about that, I just get a little enthusiastic when it comes to fluff, lol. 😆 I hope it all made sense; some things might already be obvious, but maybe there's still something helpful in there. And, of course, that's just how I personally see it.

👗 INTRODUCTION TO MAHOU FASHION

If you’re no stranger to the world of magical heroes, you’ll know that they have different outfits whenever they transform. Strikingly different outfits compared to how most of us dress on the norm. Advanced magical heroes will likely know what they’re searching for in terms of outfits, however, beginner magical heroes may not know where to start– that’s what this guide is for! In this guide, I’ll be discussing a couple of tips and tricks to create your magical hero outfit!

👠 HOW DO I GET STARTED?

To get started, I recommend following some of the advice that I shared on my concept basics post– especially with making lists. I recommend making bulleted lists of what you want/don’t want, specifically in outfits. For example, writing down “I want to wear a skirt” and “I don’t want heels” already narrows down a LOT of possibilities you have for an outfit! 

Another recommendation is to decide a couple of concept themes before you create an outfit, so you can correlate your concept with your outfit. Knowing the basics can help you more than you think– know your desired motifs, colors, etc.

One more important tip, think about what you are comfortable wearing and what you’d like to embody as a magical hero. You can experiment with this by playing dress-up in your bedroom, fitting rooms, etc! Experiment with what you feel comfortable wearing in real life, so you’ll get an idea of what you’d like to wear while doing magic. If you can’t do this, then think about what you would like to wear as a magical hero. Maybe you want to try a new style, or (my personal motivation) defy societal norms/the “dress code” you were raised with. Basically, go out there and experiment! 

💄 BRAINSTORMING IDEAS

Now that you have these new ideas layed out, it’s time to brainstorm! Go out in the real world or on the wonderful world wide web and search for some outfit ideas! Here are some helpful sources for finding outfits:

Pinterest is a STAPLE for inspiration. Some keywords I recommend are “magical girl”, “magical girl oc”, “magical girl oc design”, “(your aesthetic)core outfit”, “runway outfit” and “stage outfit”!

Research some magical hero animes/games for outfit ideas! Some I recommend looking at are Madoka Magica (more specifically Magia Record since there’s like 1000 magical girls there), Precure, Girls x Heroine, Cocoppa Play, and Pripara!

tumblr (this platform teehee) is also a nice place to search for inspiration! You can use the same keywords above, just with tumblr hashtags!

Play around with dress-up apps like Gacha Life 2, Dolldivine, Everskies, Picrew, and ROBLOX (I know a couple of avatar editor games, if you want me to drop them, just ask!)

Go window shopping (or shopping if you have the money) and look at magical hero-esque outfits! You can go thrifting, to the mall, online shopping, or look at other people’s everyday outfits!

🎨 DESIGNING THE OUTFIT: SECTION 1

Now that you have inspiration and plenty of ideas to go off of, it’s time to DESIGN! You can design your outfit with any method, from creating collages off of images, to using dress-up games, drawing your design, commissioning an artist, there’s endless possibilities!

The only method I recommend you don’t use is AI art. AI art not only takes credit away from actual artists, but AI art is environmentally harmful and the algorithm searches every image on the internet, including medical records and illegal and problematic images. Mahou Planet has a rule against using AI art: “There will be no AI art usage in this server. This rule is non-negotiable. Accidentally sending AI art without knowing is understandable and can be corrected by deleting the message, however, do not promote the usage of/use AI art.” I will not be willing to argue with anyone about the morality of AI art– know it is not supported by us. There are many better alternatives that can get you a better design, and most importantly- it’s a design that you (for the most part) create yourself!

There are lots of different factors to consider for your outfit design, such as whether you have teammates, uniforms, shared outfit motifs, outfit rules, etc. We’ll go over those in this section!

TEAMMATES

If you have teammates, it may be a good idea to correlate your outfits together to show that you’re a team. 

For example, the magical girls in each Precure season have shared outfit motifs to show their team harmony. I think the Precure season that does this well is GoPri. The Cures in Go Princess Precure each have a tiara with a charm representing their outfits motif, princess-like dresses, a back bow, and a golden gem on their outfits. You can easily look at them and tell that they are a team. 

Another example of this is of Winx (specifically S1)! The simplicity of their designs, the glittery fabric, the small wings, and the boots are all correlated, even though the girls themselves all stand out with unique takes on these rules. 

Something to take from these magical girls is that they each have something to tell that they’re a team. If you are a team and want you guys to have shared outfit motifs, make sure that someone can look at a picture of your team and can tell that you guys work together.

A simpler solution to this is uniforms! Uniforms are basically a simpler way to coordinate your teammate outfits. One of the most famous examples of this is Sailor Moon: their outfits, besides some accessories, are the same. The only difference is the color scheme. This is easy for those who don’t want to design unique outfits, or want outfits to stand out in terms of color. 

Here’s a more simplified list of the pros and cons of having uniforms VS unique outfits:

As you can see, I have a little bit more pros under uniforms. However, do what you want with your designs! I personally always go for unique outfits– some of the unique outfits I’ve seen in the magical hero community look STUNNING!

If you want to have unique outfits or uniforms, a good thing to implement is outfit rules. Rules are basically what you can and can’t do in a design. When I’m designing teammates, I have rules listed under DO, DO NOT, and IT DEPENDS categories.

DO is of stuff you can change, add, modify, etc. For example: you can have a unique hairstyle.

DO NOT is stuff you cannot change, no exceptions! Example: you must keep a bow on your chest.

IT DEPENDS is stuff you can modify, but may be limited. Example: You can change the shape of a skirt, but it must keep white ruffles and be in the color of your theme color.

These rules can vary based on your kind of magical hero and what you want for your team. Remember: you are the designer! Design to your heart's content and what you think looks good for you and your team! 💫

SOLO

If you’re going solo, this section may be a bit more helpful than what I said in the teammates section. Solo outfits usually apply to just yourself, so you have so much more freedom in designing your outfit. When making an outfit, don’t just focus on what looks good. Remember to design an outfit that makes you comfortable, and you only! 

If you want to have teammates in the future, or if you need more guidance on creating outfits, then it’s recommended to create outfit rules, just in case. Or if you’d like 100% freedom on outfit designs, do what you want! It’s your outfit!

THEME COLOR

Choosing a theme color is easier said than done. I see most magical heroes choose their favorite colors as their theme colors, and I have also seen magical heroes put more thought in their theme colors. Do what you want! Even if you don’t want a theme color or want multiple, you are still a valid magical hero!

For color palettes for an outfit, you can go on Pinterest for colors, or go to coolors.co to generate color palettes! A cool thing about coolors is that you can save color palettes for your magical form!

MOTIFS

Motifs are also important to decide on your outfit! To decide outfit motifs, repeating elements in your outfit, think about the theme your magical hero wants to display, or a moral lesson you’d like for whoever you’re fighting/the general public to learn. If you’re a magical hero of love, you can opt for adding heart shapes and motifs to your outfit. If you’re a magical hero of wishes, add some shooting stars on your outfit! It goes on and on for any motifs, it’s all up to you to determine how you use them.

🎨 DESIGNING THE OUTFIT: SECTION 2

For this section, I’ll go over the more detailed aspects of your design, from top to bottom! I’ll give advice on designing outfits, as well as some practical tips for your magical design.

HAIR

Probably the most famous– magical heroes are notorious for their crazy hair. Most magical heroes you see have long hair, either down or in some updo, and in the color of their theme color or an accent color. Some magical girls have their hair be a variation of their natural hair. You can have any kind of hair you’d like as a magical hero! Here are some of my tips:

Make sure your hair won’t hinder your fighting abilities- it won’t get caught in your outfit, you won’t trip on it, etc. Also, make sure your villains can’t grab your hair to pull you/catch you off guard! This is a common fighting technique and I’ve seen this absolutely destroy people in school fights. If crazy freshman can do it, your villains likely will as well.

Don’t worry about your hair being “easily recognizable” if you’re keeping your natural hair. You can always script in that no one recognizes you or use magic to ensure no one associates you with your secret identity.

As for personal recommendations, I recommend having your hair out of your face. I have bangs in real life and in my magical girl form; sometimes they’re a pain, especially on hot days. It’d kind of hinder your ability to see in your magical form. A good counter to this would be scripting the thickness or thinness of your bangs if you plan on having any, or to script that you see better once you transform (this is good for people with glasses!)

Also recommend to script that you don’t sweat when you transform. Sweat + hair = pain.

Choose a hairstyle you can fight in and feel comfortable with– if you’re not sure where to start, think about hairstyles you would like to try or hairstyles that flatter you. Even hairstyles you wear in real life would be a good start!

Don’t worry about damaging your hair with the color you choose, I’d like to imagine magic changes your hair color, and is completely damage-free! (Really wish this were the case in real life 😭)

HEADGEAR

I know a couple of magical heroes who plan on having hats or SOMETHING on their head in their magical hero form. If you’re interested in having headgear in your magical hero form, here are some precautions and tips:

I don’t want to say it’s a hindrance to have a hat (because I literally wear an ushanka in my magical hero form 💀), but try to find some way it’ll stay on your head while fighting. Unless you don’t anticipate doing crazy backflips, I’d recommend scripting that your headgear won’t fall off even in the craziest situations– or even better, it can only be taken off by your hands only.

Also script that your hat (or better: your entire mh outfit) is the exact size for you, and grows as you grow in civilian form!

Try to find some practicality in it! I see magical heroes go for goggles to replace their civilian form glasses. Some magical heroes wear hats to keep the sun out of their eyes. I had an old concept where my magic came from a top hat (if you know, you know). Hats don’t just have to be fashionable, but I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted something cool just to finish off your outfit.

If you’re looking for hat designs, a good game I recommend for inspiration is Genshin Impact! The creativity the characters have for their headgear is amazing, and I can imagine some magical hero designs based off of just hats alone. Pinterest is also a good place to look!

TOPS

Tops! This is one of my favorite parts of designing! Designing tops is always really fun. Here’s some advice:

I recommend looking up necklines or just pretty tops in general for inspiration! 

Also recommend to have a built-in bra with your top, wearing one separately would be a hassle in my opinion.

One of my biggest pet peeves with strapless tops is it falling down every 5 seconds, so if you have a strapless top, make sure you script that it won’t fall while you’re fighting. 

This is the same for sleeves in general! Script they won’t fall down.

If you have anything tied in your magical form, like ribbons, script that they won’t come out or loose.

Make sure you choose something you’re comfortable with! Script that you’re comfortable in your top, no matter what kind of top you’re going to wear in your magical form.

PSA for magical heroes who want gloves: script that you can use your phone while wearing them. I hate wearing gloves and then having to take them off just to use my phone :( 

If you aren’t planning on wearing gloves, script that you don’t leave fingerprint traces on surfaces you touch, just for security reasons!

I’d hate to continue the “YOU DON’T NEED PAINTED NAILS IF YOU’RE WEARING GLOVES DUHHH!!!!” debate, do what you want with your nails! Pinterest has gorgeous nail designs! If you are wearing gloves, I’d recommend making the color of your nails change the natural color of your nails. Long nails would probably be more of a liability than shorter ones, or you could script your nails are immune to breaking, getting damaged, falling off, etc.

A smart idea would be incorporating your outfit into some kind of use with your magic. For example, if your main weapon is guns, then I’d recommend keeping ammunition on your body, on a sling or a belt. This takes a bit more thought to be put into it, but it’s so worth it and makes a great design in the end!

BOTTOMS

Bottoms are also fun to design! In my opinion, these are the most versatile. There are different directions you can take for bottoms, SO many different directions! Here’s my advice and suggestions:

Go for what makes you the most comfortable! You are 100% a valid magical hero if you go for pants or shorts over a skirt and vice versa! It’s your outfit! If someone has a problem with how you present your magical self, they can kiss your- 💥💥/JOKE /ok but fr ignore people who have problems with your outfit they’re just insecure (/srs)

If you are planning on wearing a skirt, please script safety shorts or opt for a skort instead! I don’t think I should explain why flashing people while you’re fighting is not only embarrassing but dangerous since there are terrible and disgusting weirdos out there. 

If you’re wearing socks, script that they won’t slide down (another pet peeve of mine)

If you want to wear heels, or if your shoes are high heeled, PLEASE script that you know how to fight in heels and won’t fall or trip! Been there done that, it’s not fun. Also scripting that your feet won’t get blisters is a good precaution too!

Also, if you’re wearing a back bow/something on the back/a cape, or anything you’re scared will catch up into something while moving, script that you’re not going to get stuck or nothing will catch your clothes while you’re moving.

MAKEUP

I feel like makeup is a less commonly talked about thing when it comes to magical hero design. I think makeup is also important to consider when you’re transformed! Here are some considerations:

Make sure your makeup is sweat-proof, sensory friendly, and won’t wipe off or get ruined while fighting. Emphasis on sensory friendly, I avoid makeup in civilian form because foundation is absolutely PAINFUL.

Search for makeup styles you like, or go off of makeup you wear or would like to wear in real life! You can go for natural makeup, glamorous makeup, stage makeup, etc.

Royale High on ROBLOX is a good game to look for makeup styles! The makeup in faces (to my knowledge) is free to use! Everskies is also a good game to experiment with makeup!

Tear proof makeup works as well, just in case you end up crying in your magical hero form. 

🎤 GENERAL TIPS

Keep in mind the environment you’ll be fighting in may change depending on where you go. You may fight in the rain, in snow, on the beach, etc. It’d be a nice idea to accommodate your outfit for such conditions, or to script that your outfit is weather-proof. 

Speaking of accommodations, if you’re disabled, it’s always a great idea to script accommodations for your outfit! You can script that your outfit is sensory friendly, isn’t itchy, and (my favorite) there are no tags on your magical outfit.

I also like to script that my magical outfit is able to regulate heat/coolness! This can work for any outfit, even if you can’t find the logic behind it. It’s magic! That’s all the logic you need!

Make sure you’re able to find some way you can fight in your outfit. Even if you don’t plan on fighting, it’s a good precaution!

Kind of TMI, but if you get periods, script that your outfit is bleed-proof. This is also good if you end up getting hurt in your outfit. Also scripting that your outfit’s immune to tearing or getting injured is a great idea!

A fun way to experiment with how your magical hero outfit may look is to take a full body picture of yourself and then draw over it with your magical hero clothes. You can also dress in aspects of your magical hero outfit in real life with items you have at home (ex. wearing a top similar to the top in your magical hero form) to get a feel of what you’ll be wearing.

If you need design help, I suggest joining Mahou Planet! There are great magical hero designs there and talented designers willing to help you! Searching for inspiration, meshing different pictures of outfits together, and asking friends for help are also valid methods!

💫 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, there are about a gajillion different ways to create a magical outfit. There’s not one right or wrong way to design, or a “bad” or “good” design: what matters is that you’re comfortable in it and that it’s an outfit you love! Outfit changes are 100% valid, and I’d even recommend scripting variations of your outfit for weather/personal reasons!

19th's Steam Next Fest Impressions June 2025 Edition - Day 2

Day 1

All Living Things

This game is more of a claymation showcase than anything else.

The game is a series of dioramas, each with an accompanying poem. Three of the poem's words are obscured. Those words are the objects you need to click in order to proceed.

This isn't the most satisfying puzzle. It starts with a bit of pixel hunting as you look for what will respond to clicks. Once that's down, it's possible to guess from context, but it's also incredibly easy to just brute force the combination.

But the game isn't trying to be a deep puzzle. Like I said, it's trying to be an art piece, showcasing animation and taking the player through an abstract tone piece. The way things animated actually reminded me of a higher end and more serious Humongous Entertainment.

Dead as Disco

The undead Charlie Disco has come to life, and is ready for roaring rhythmic revenge.

This is the latest in the trend of rhythm brawlers, following in the footsteps of No Straight Roads and Hi-Fi Rush. This one is less DMC and more Arkham Asylum: less focused on combos or a wide movelist, more focused on weaving through an aggresive crowd.

This shift brings up some problems, though.

There's the inherent problem of Arkham's combat system, and games like it, feeling somewhat prescriptive. Parry when it says parry, Dodge when it says dodge, attack otherwise, follow the color coded icons. This is slightly more fitting when it's a rhythm game, but it just leads to a more fundemental problem:

This is a game about being stylish, but there's no room for your own actions to feel individually stylish. Charlie Disco is doing a lot of different moves and attacks, but I'm just hitting the same attack button on the beat. Enemies only went down once I did a canned finisher animation on them. I'm not being cool, I'm watching Charlie Disco be cool.

There seems to be room for expansion, there's slots for unlockable moves in the movelist, but I'm not sure how much room for depth this system gives you. I'm just not feeling the groove at the moment.

That being said, the music they offered was really nice, especially their remix of Maniac. Plus, there's the option of putting your own songs in if nothing they offer strikes your fancy.

Danchi Days

An adventure game about reviving a community.

You play as Hoshino, a girl who, after some years away, has moved back into her childhood home, an apartment complex called "Another Danchi." The place has seen much better days, and most of its inhabitants are older people and retirees.

After finding an old stack of flyers in her closet, she takes it upon herself to revive the Danchi Summer Festival.

It's a simple exploration adventure game. Look at things, find items, talk to people, and try to get as many RSVPs as possible. Adding a bit of texture to this process is "Sensing." When something merits closer examination, the player does a simple wario-ware style minigame. Aside from new items or information, these minigames give stars, which can be used to unlock new areas.

There's also a delightful web 1.0 style in-game browser. A lot of your neighbors have individual home pages, and you can find specific keywords to google.

The dialogue can be a bit cloying, but I love the overall vibe. While the game is overall cheerful, there's a very deliberate undercurrent of melancholy. This is very much a game about Japan's aging demographic crisis. Hoshino's family moved back because her deeply dementia addled grandmother needed more care. She started the festival project because her grandmother used to organize it, and she thinks surrounding her with a beloved event will help her "get better."

I'm expecting waterworks.

Giggleland: Terry's Vegetable Patch

There's an ARG surrounding this game that I've been casually following. Its subject matter isn't anything revolutionary, but there's an impressive amount of effort behind it. I felt compelled to try it. Besides, Shipwrecked 64 showed me that I'm willing to sit through mascot stuff if there's enough ARG shit surrounding it.

As for the game itself... mixed feelings.

It's the standard indie first person horror game. They're genuinely good at building tension through environmental design, then it throws you a "go fuck yourself" type jumpscare, the type that's just "a door closed quickly in front of you" or "something in the environment fell down with a way too loud sound effect."

It tries to do some interesting meta stuff. Throughout the playthrough, the game will take unprompted screenshots. If the player goes to the file address, they'll find it wasn't a screenshot of their POV, but of an unknown third party watching their character. But the payoff near the end was... unintentionally funny. A wall covered in madness mantra graffiti also has your steam avatar on it, oHhHhHhHhHhhh....

There's still potential for the "full game," since this is supposed to be a standalone prologue, but they're going to have to do more than what they're doing here.

There's probably hidden stuff in the code or whatever but I'm Not Gonna Do That.

Death & Faeology

A supernatural Murder Mystery Visual Novel.

In an alternate 1915, where faeries and the occult are not only real but a newly officialized field of study, you play as one of the first professors in the field of Faeology. When a detective walks in needing input on an inexplicable series of murders, its your chance to legitimize the field and make a name for yourself.

It was something of a red flag when I saw that the game was being made in Unity, not a VN specific engine like Renp'y or Tyranobuilder. That's not to say those engines don't have their own limitations, but from what I understand there's more packed in for you from the start with those.

It was a bit of foreboding that paid off here. The game is missing some features. There's no log system, so if you accidentally click through some text too fast, it's either go without or reload a save. On the topic of saves, there's only four slots instead of the standard dozens of slots in most titles. While I never use it, I didn't see an auto-advance text option anywhere.

I could see why they chose unity when I saw the investigation system. It's essentially moving evidence as physical pieces around on your desk, examining things with a magnifying glass and blacklight, cross referencing it against a faerie encyclopedia. But... it felt more like going through a checklist than doing deductions.

There was a pseudo-confrontation when presenting your findings to the detective, but it was mostly in the form of following a dialogue tree. The issue was, I had a good sense of what happened, but I didn't know how to best translate that into the right branch, so it was a bit trial and error.

It's probably telling that plot hasn't come up yet in a VN. The mystery was... alright. It's the opener in this type of game, so I'm not expecting anything that pushes the envelope yet. But most of the characters just fulfilled their narrative function, moved the plot along. The closest thing to a strong dynamic was the detective being your gilted ex.

Mio: Memories in Orbit

This game also gave me a bit of a bad first impression, albeit an unfair one.

I load it up. It's a metroidvania starring a little guy with a stubby melee attack. I go through a derelict space station, fighting enemy robots as I go. The first NPC I meet says cryptic nonsense and mentions that I'm the first unit they've seen in a while that hasn't been corrupted.

Oh no. We're doing Hollow Knight again.

To be fair, while it doesn't go anywhere unexpected plot wise, the game establishes its own mechanical identity fairly quickly. It's much more platforming forward. The first area past the initial hub is an ice area with huge ramps to launch yourself off of. Your first upgrade is a hookshot that launches you both to set grapple points and toward enemies. Momentum is a bigger deal here. It even throws tricky stuff, like areas where you need to understand how to reset your air actions with a successful air melee attack, pretty early on.

The game's environments are a lot bigger and a lot more colorful than expected considering the premise. I was expecting a space station to feel cramped, but here there's multiple biomes and vistas that extend well into the background. I can tell this place will be fun to explore.

Overall a good game. Recommend it.

The concept for this photoshoot began with the keyword ‘departure.’ It all started with a comment from Youngjae on a post uploaded by an editor who cares for the four of them on the Singles Instagram.

Youngjae: “I felt that the post was written by someone who knows us well. Just looking at the post, you could see the affection. So, I left a comment half out of gratitude and half as a joke, but I wrote it hoping they would invite us (laughs).”

Daehyun: “In fact, we had thought during this activity period that we would like to do a photoshoot at least once. It would become a memory for both us and our fans. However, due to various circumstances, it was difficult to proceed. So, I feel that this photoshoot with Singles was a destined opportunity.”

How are you spending your time these days?

Daehyun: “I’m enjoying our activities (laughs). Recently, I stayed in Japan for about 10 days, meeting fans, and I just returned to Korea. So, I’m resting and preparing for concerts again.”

Jongup: “I’ve now started preparing my solo album, which I had put off for a while. According to my plans, it should have already been released, but group activities took priority.”

Yongguk: “I’m happy to be working with the members after such a long time, and I worked hard. After finishing the photoshoot, we have a fan signing event scheduled.”

Youngjae: “Recently, I’ve been preparing for the musical '부치하난,' and by the time this photoshoot comes out, the drama 'Our Beautiful Summer' is expected to be aired.”

Since this is your first activity together in a while, there are likely many fans who have become successful and are showing up in front of the four of you, just like the editor from Singles who previously made a video. Do you have any memorable episodes?

Yongguk: “In the past, many fans introduced themselves as students, but now there are fans who have become proper business owners. I remember when they used to gift us red ginseng jelly as kids, and now they come back proudly bringing us red ginseng as working adults.”

Daehyun: “Although I’m not a 성덕, while doing this music broadcast, I met staff members who used to work with us back then. They were at entry-level positions at that time, but now they’ve moved up in their careers. Because of that, I felt that they put a lot of effort into preparing our stage, which allowed us to successfully complete this music broadcast.”

Youngjae: “Whenever I go to acting jobs, there’s always at least one person I recognize (laughs). There are also people on set who greet us, saying they liked us, and some of the team members I worked with bought tickets to come to our performance. I’m so grateful every time I receive such greetings.”

Jong-up: “I heard that Lee Chaeyeon was also a fan of ours. She came to our concert and supported us enthusiastically at the venue, which surprised me and made me grateful. It’s fascinating and feels different to see someone who liked us become a singer and actively be loved while engaging in their own activities. The fact that the time we spent working became a dream for someone is quite special.”

It’s been seven years since you’ve worked together. Do you remember the day you decided to gather again and reach that starting line? I heard Jongup brought it up first.

Jongup: “Even when we weren’t actively working together, we would often meet, and that topic would come up every time. It wasn’t a decision made in a single moment. However, when it came time to execute specific plans, I first asked Youngjae. The reason was that Youngjae had to prepare for activities right after his military discharge. He might have had his own plans after coming back, so his willingness was the most important (laughs). I seized the opportunity during his leave to ask him. Fortunately, he immediately agreed and said he could jump right in, so I discussed it with the other members. Everyone seemed to share the same feelings, making the process smooth.”

How does Youngjae remember that day?

Youngjae: “Jongup had been expressing his desire to regroup, release an album, and start activities for a long time. We all had the mindset of wanting to do it, but Jongup was always strongly saying, ‘I really hope we can release an album.’ Those discussions continued until Jongup came forward with a specific plan for the album. He said that if the older members were on board, he would talk more about it. We all agreed, and we really ended up gathering to release an album (laughs).”

If this album had been released seven years ago, what kind of album would it have been?

Yongguk: “If it had been released back then, it would have been too sad. Instead, now that the Curtain Call album is out, I feel like we can alleviate some of that sadness. It’s an album that reminisces about that time and fills it with happy memories.”

When you think back to your previous activities, what stands out the most?

Yongguk: “When we had meetings about album concepts, we used to just throw ideas around (laughs). But it was surprising that the company approved those concepts. There were moments when I thought to myself, ‘Why did they allow this?’ The albums like 'BADMAN' and 'ONE SHOT' had that feeling—it was quite intriguing.”

Youngjae: “At that time, we were really immersed in that, and we thought that to survive in this tough environment, we had to show different sides of ourselves. We didn’t need to be the same as everyone else. That’s why we went more extreme.”

Yongguk: “Looking back now, it really was extreme (laughs).”

Jongup: “Except for the choreography of 'BADMAN,' it was all fine… (laughs).”

Youngjae: “At that time, it felt like we were ahead of our time, but we were very satisfied. However, the fans didn’t seem to like it.”

Daehyun: “I think it was because we kept coming out with dark makeup on our faces (laughs).”

Now you’re active with fifth-generation idols. A lot has changed compared to that time. Was there anything that surprised you during your recent activities?

Youngjae: “I wanted to try a photo frame with phototism, and we managed to do it (laughs). I was really looking forward to it, but the shoot ended more quickly than I expected, which was a bit disappointing. I plan to definitely take a picture with it before the period ends as a keepsake.”

Jongup: “You might not know this, but (laughs) I’ve been steadily active and have experienced all of this. Even so, it’s fascinating to see what the older members are doing.”

If there’s something you’d like to do with your fans in the future, could you give us a little spoiler?

Daehyun: “Unfortunately, aside from the already scheduled events, nothing has been confirmed yet. However, everyone is expressing a desire for an encore performance, so it seems to be heading in that direction.”

Youngjae: “What I really want to do with the fans is perform. As fans might know (laughs), when we have concerts, our comments are really short, and we fill the entire time with songs from start to finish. We did manage to perform quite a few songs this time, but I still feel thirsty for more. So, I want to add even more songs to our next performance and run around with the fans.”

Jongup: “I also want to perform, but I think it would be special if we could perform at the place where we debuted, like at the Jangchung Gymnasium where our debut showcase was held. Whenever I recall that time, it feels vivid. So, I want to face the fans there at least once. It’s the place of our first meeting, after all.”

Yongguk: “I do volunteer work at the end of every year, and I think it would be a great support if the fans could join us (laughs). It would be nice if all the members could participate together. I’ve had a few good memories doing that with fans before.”

Finally, now that you’ve reached a new starting line, is there anything you’d like to convey to your fans?

Youngjae: “I hope this photoshoot becomes a good gift for the fans, just as it was a special time for us. I want to express my gratitude once again for this activity, which I keep mentioning. We will work hard to repay the love we’ve received, so I hope you won’t forget us and continue to send us warm love (laughs). I also want to say that we will truly visit you with smiling faces, so I hope you won’t feel too sad.”

Yongguk: “I’m really enjoying working with the members lately, and I’m grateful to the fans, but I’m even more thankful to the younger members. In fact, each of us has a lot to do individually, and it’s been a hectic situation. Youngjae had his drama and musical, and Jongup and Daehyun had to prepare their solo albums. Still, I want to express my gratitude to the members who have been together through it all, and I hope all the activities the members are doing go well, and I’ll always support them (laughs).”

Daehyun: “I think that by releasing this album with the members, we’ve found a new direction and path. It has helped me regain the things I had lost and rekindled my love for music. In a way, it’s ultimately thanks to the fans. Now that we’re back, I see it as a fresh start, so I want to share good music with you for a long time.”

Jongup: “After seven years, I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for the fans during the time we weren’t together. I’m sure some may have felt anxious that we might not reunite. However, now that we’re showing our activities together, I feel that a deeper trust has developed between us and the fans. Even if it’s not visible, there’s a belief that we can still be together. We were fortunate that many fans attended our recent performance, which strengthened our trust in them. Going forward, I hope you wait with excitement rather than anxiety. We will always be here, so I hope you continue to enjoy our music with a good heart. Lastly, I hope you’ll support my solo album as well (laughs).”

Art request, of sorts

It’s bloomed fully into summer here which is truly the worst season for my body image issues and insecurities, especially when it comes to going to places the beach, the pool, etc. I’m sure I’m not the only one so I’m currently doing a small series of line drawings focusing on insecurities, body neutrality, and showing that you’re not alone. Kind of in the way of ‘how to get a beach body: have a body. go to the beach’.

I’d love to work with as much diversity and different points of view as possible so if you feel comfortable with it, drop me a message about your body insecurities - it can be a description, a few keywords, an image, a link to an online image that showing what you mean. It’s entirely up to you.

The United States Army is employing a prototype generative artificial intelligence tool to identify references to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) for removal from training materials in line with a recent executive order from President Donald Trump.

Officials at the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC)—the major command responsible for training soldiers, developing leaders, and shaping the service’s guidelines, strategies, and concepts—are currently using the AI tool, dubbed CamoGPT, to “review policies, programs, publications, and initiatives for DEIA and report findings,” according to an internal memo reviewed by WIRED.

The memo followed Trump’s signing of a January 27 executive order titled “Restoring America’s Fighting Force,” which directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to eliminate all Pentagon policies seen as promoting what that the commander in chief declared “un-American, divisive, discriminatory, radical, extremist, and irrational theories” regarding race and gender, a linguistic dragnet that extends as far as past social media posts from official US military accounts.

In an email to WIRED, TRADOC spokesman Army Major Chris Robinson confirmed the use of CamoGPT to review DEIA materials.

TRADOC “will fully execute and implement all directives outlined in the Executive Orders issued by the president. We ensure that these directives are carried out with the utmost professionalism, efficiency, and in alignment with national security objectives,” Robinson says. “Specific details about internal policies and tactics cannot be discussed. However, the use of all tools in our portfolio, including CamoGPT, to increase productivity at all levels can and will be used.”

Developed last summer to boost productivity and operational readiness across the US Army, CamoGPT currently has around 4,000 users who “interact” with it on a daily basis, Captain Aidan Doyle, a CamoGPT data engineer, tells WIRED. The tool is used for everything from developing comprehensive training program materials to producing multilingual translations, with TRADOC providing a “proof of concept and demonstration” at last October’s annual Association of the United States Army conference in Washington, DC, according to Robinson.

While Doyle declined to comment on the specifics on how TRADOC officials were likely using the CamoGPT to scan for DEIA-related policies, he described the process of searching through documents as relatively straightforward.

“I would take all the documentation you want to examine, order it all in a collection on CamoGPT, and then ask questions about the documents,” he says. “The way retrieval-augmented generation works is that the more specific your question is to the concepts inside the document, the more detailed information the model will provide back.”

In practical terms, this means that TRADOC officials are likely inputting a large number of documents into CamoGPT and asking the LLM to scan for targeted keywords like “dignity” or “respect” (which, yes, the Army is currently using to screen past digital content) to identify materials for subsequent alteration and bring them in line with Trump’s executive order.

By using CamoGPT, the work of eliminating DEIA-related content will likely result in a rapid change to the US Army’s documentation. “We’re competing with ‘control+F’ in Adobe Acrobat,” Doyle says.

CamoGPT isn’t the only AI chatbot in the Pentagon’s arsenal: The US Air Force’s NIPRGPT has seen extensive use among airmen since its launch in June for “summarization of documents, drafting of documents and coding assistance,” according to DefenseScoop.

The AI-assisted assessment of US military training materials comes amid a government-wide effort to root out DEIA initiated the day Trump returned to the Oval Office in January to start his second term. Detailed in Trump’s January 27 executive order, the Defense Department’s purge has taken the form of the closure of service-specific DEIA offices and program, a department-wide review of past DEI initiatives, and even the removal of historical content related to the famed all-Black Tuskegee Airmen from Air Force basic training materials, the latter of which was swiftly reversed amid public outcry.

Originally inspired by the public release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, CamoGPT is a product of the Army’s Artificial Intelligence Integration Center (AI2C), the organization formed in 2018 as part of Army Future Command to spearhead AI research and development efforts by “leveraging a soldier workforce to build experimental prototypes,” as Eric Schmitz, AI2C’s operations and intelligence portfolio lead, tells WIRED.

“The mission is to make AI accessible to the Army through experimentation, and we have an ethos and culture that is very much a start-up ethos.” Schmitz says. “We are product-centric and believe AI is inherently software-driven: You can do all the research you like in academia, but if you don't have software to deliver it to somebody and find out if it's useful software, then you’ll never know if your AI is useful in the real world.”

In response to the arrival of ChatGPT, AI2C quickly spun up a CamoGPT prototype based on an open-source LLM in June 2024. The center’s approach to CamoGPT is “model agnostic,” according to Schmitz: While the system currently relies on tech giant Meta’s open-source Llama 3.3 70B LLM, the underlying model is “expendable” should a better version hit the market. What really matters is building software that the average soldier will actually use in their day-to-day operations, an achievement that might influence its long-term adoption across the force.

“When you talk about how the Army doesn’t build software well, it’s because user adoption is not a priority, but it’s a massive priority to us,” Schmitz says.

Whether CamoGPT proliferates more broadly across the Army remains to be seen, and Schmitz and Doyle emphasized that AI2C’s role is laser-focused on experimental prototyping rather than building products ready for immediate fielding. But with the entire federal government reorienting itself in the name of “efficiency,” the success of CamoGPT’s application to Trump’s DEIA overhaul may end up cementing its utility for military planners.

“You need to be ruthlessly critical of what you have built and what you plan to build and hyper focused on driving user adoption,” Schmitz says. “The core question is, how do you build something that’s so valuable that people say they can't live without it?”
