This was a longer spar than Regulus thought it would be. Usually, he would defeat his opponent fairly quickly, however, this spar was harder than it was. Observing his opponent while exchanging blows, he found this spar more fun and interesting than his previous spars with other trainees. He could also see that she was having fun as well as she was taunting him. He only taunted her back with a huge grin.

Unfortunately, the fun did not last forever as a familiar saint stepped in.

“Kunikida? Why did you do that? We were sparing!”

“Sparing for too long. There is a limit. I understand that you are having fun sparring each other but there are still other trainees that need to spar too.” Kunikida glanced at the other trainees that were watching them. “Stop standing there and go back to your training now!”

The trainees immediately flee back to their training spots. They didn’t want to stand around and get lectured by Kunikida. After all the trainees were gone, Kunikida turned back to them.

“Are you two doing okay?”

He was a little worried for Kanako as he knew she was having a hard time fitting in. Not only that her opponent was Sisyphus’ nephew and he had already heard rumours about how skilled the boy was. He was what people called a prodigy.

Is there a better source of drama than watching a character be pushed to their breaking point?

Like, I joke about it but it really does feel like the secret to make a good story is just "Make a character -> Throw challenge after challenge at them -> See how they react."

There is something...

...just fascinating about knowing how to challenge your character without making it feel like a misery fest and actually making an exploration of how people respond when they reach their limits. How do they reach it? Why do they reach it? Can they make it back? How do they respond? Where do we draw the limit?

This is why the conflict is such a crucial part of a narrative. The walls that you make for your character to face and hopefully overcome is what will test your skill as a writer.

You can't make it too easy because then it becomes anti-climatic, and you can't make it too hard either because then it will feel like you're just torturing your character, and if the breaking point doesn't feel earned it will be like the writer is just trying to force the drama instead of journeying through it.

I've seen a few cases where a character will snap for very mundane reasons and it makes me go "You just wanted to have your cool 'I'm going Super Sayan' moment, you don't really care about this character's emotional struggle." 😑

You gotta find that right balance of what you're gonna throw at your hero and how you're going to explore it for your story.

It's tricky, but if you manage to pull it off, it can lead to some really great storytelling, character study, and theme exploration.

Does anyone else find that the more they understand a movie the more they feel like crying on every viewing?

Like I never used to cry at Kung Fu Panda or the first httyd or Megamind but now that I’m older and I fundamentally understand the characters and themes and plot and can appreciate the music, lighting, animation, fight choreography, character nuances and just all that jazz there are certain scenes that’ll make me choke when they don’t even warrant tears.

i LOVE when y'all send me tiktok trends bc frankly i haven't actually caught wind of most of them. at the moment my tiktok algorithm can't tell if i like sharks or judge judy more (i truly have no interest in either one) so i do appreciate the assistance.

case in point: i had no idea that this trend was a thing and it is delightful, and yeah, Hazel 100% does it with a particular voicemail Eddie left her:

"Hazel," Eddie starts, his voice muffled like he's trying to whisper, "I don't have much time. I just got an email from Amazon and I think – I think – there's a goddamn colossal package on the front porch, and I reeeeally need you to get it in the house and hide it before Pop and I get home, okay?"

There's a short, somewhat staticky pause.

1) into/ across the spiderverse

so beautiful. amazing story, full of emotion and color. very cool mixed animation style, combining 2D and 3D. insane use of color theory, and full of detail and depth. 11/10.

another beautiful movie, obvs because it’s wes anderson. stop-motion. very emotional and funny at the same time. i legit cried.

amazing movie. absolutely chilling. the mix of analog horror and horrific implications are amazing. another stopmotion.

4) puss in boots: the last wish

listen. you don’t have to watch any other puss in boots movies to like this one. you don’t even need to like puss in boots. another 2D and 3D animation mix, and it’s gorgeous. hilarious, and very, very good depictions of a lot of things (no spoilers). plenty of adult jokes packed in, too.

honestly horrifying. three different storylines. very unclear ending and uncomfy all the way through. absolutely recommend, especially if you like don’t hug me, i’m scared. implications and deeper meaning in everything.
