Do you have any Modern AU HCs for Pyrrha as well? Oh, and what would it be like if Pyrrha was a woman in the first place, not Achilles in character? Do you think the relationship with Patroclus would be any different? And if so, how?

I HC Achilles as bigender or gender fluid. I don’t really have HCs for trans Achilles. As for Patroclus, I don’t think it would matter much to him. They have a deep love for each other, and Pat is bi. I think trans Achilles would be open with Pat about it from the beginning. I think Pat would love and cherish all aspects of Achilles and would support however Achilles chooses to present. Pat might be more protective of trans Achilles due to sexism, but not much else would change. Trans Achilles would be just as capable, strong, and confident as cis Achilles. One thing that Pat might be especially please with would be their ability to get married (TSoA/Iliad).

Modern AU

Pyrrha started off as a joke. It started one Halloween when Achilles dressed in drag. He was always a bit curious about women and their clothes and makeup etc.. Often he had been called “girly” and “pretty.” He had fun with the drag. It was especially thrilling to flirt with Pat while “in-character.”

The “joke” then evolved into a roleplay persona that got more and more elaborate over time. Also as time passed, Pyrrha started showing up more, especially outside the bedroom. And more feminine pieces became incorporated into Achilles’ wardrobe. Eventually a conversation happened, and Achilles admitted to liking being Pyrrha (Pat liked it too). And so now sometimes he’s Pyrrha.

Pyrrha prefers to wear dresses and skirts (mostly because she loves getting railed in them).

Pyrrha has great skin, so she mostly only wears mascara and lipstick for makeup. She loves getting her lipstick all over Pat.

Pyrrha loves wearing earrings.

Pyrrha loves getting nail polish on her toes, especially reds.

Pyrrha engages in more PDA than Achilles (she gets away with it due to homophobia) (Pyrrha passes).

Pyrrha gets away with E V E R Y T H I N G. Pat can’t say no. And also once she got pulled over by a cop for speeding. She got out of the ticket by flirting. Pat was in the passenger seat at the time and was a bit miffed, but he also didn’t want to pay yet another traffic violation fine for Mrs. Road Rage.

If you insult her husband, Pyrrha will beat the shit out of you. Like put-you-in-the-hospital kind of beat down.

Pyrrha has her own diamond wedding ring (it compliments Achilles’ wedding band very nicely). She received it on one of their wedding anniversaries (5th or 10th).

Pyrrha is expensive. She brings a very sugar daddy/baby vibe to their relationship.

Pyrrha doesn’t care for handbags. They’re clutter.

Pyrrha prefers doggy (mostly it’s the hair pulling). She also really enjoys being bent over furniture. She loves muffing. Gender affirming terms for body parts are a big turn on and are the base of dirty talk.

She only tucks with certain outfits. Otherwise, otherwise its her natural self in her sexy panties. Pyrrha is really only sensitive about her biology when (Pat’s) babies come up.

She’s vain. She thinks she’s prettier than most girls she’s right.

She has very sensitive nipples.

She is a big fan of jasmine, rose, and other flower notes in her perfume.

Her preferred pet name is kitten (babygirl is a must).

Pyrrha is both a girly girl and a tomboy depending on her mood. But she’s almost always coy and flirty just to get Pat riled up.

I like to think that pre-Oracle Rachel painted scenes from both wars, but she and Percy have no idea until they go back and reflect.

Percy notices, cause Rachel shows him her art, but he just rights it off as weird, even tho something doesn’t feel right.

Like, that’s DEFINITELY a replica Achilles mourning Patroclus. Only it’s two girls, one with flowing hair and a melted face, the other kneeling over her friend, face stricken with grief. He thinks her eyes look familiar. An immortal stands over them. Although they remind more of Ares and less of Thetis.

She has another painting that reminds Percy of a story from the Gigantomachy. Hera cowers under Porphyrion, about to be attacked. Only instead of Zeus and Heracles coming to her aid, it’s a guy with blond hair. His armor and sword is distinctively NOT Greek, but he opts to not comment on it. Rachel did a good job.

There’s more in her little studio, they both dismiss them as dreams. They make Rachel uncomfortable and Percy feels bile rise the more he looks.

He doesn’t realize until months later. It hits him while on the Argo. Him, Jason, Clarisse. THEY were the heroes in those paintings. Jason was the one coming to Hera’s aid. Clarisse was mourning Selina. He was fighting giants.

It all clicked into place, and he tried to remember what else her paintings for-told.

I’m a bit nervous about sending an ask, but the curiosity has won me over, hope this isn’t too many questions

You said you headcannon Leo Valdez as dragon kin so I was wondering, do you think he has shifts often, if at all? If so, does he generally have some types of shifts more often or is it more balanced? And do the other campers and the seven know? If they do, did he tell them or did they piece it together on their own? If he told them, did he have to explain a lot or were they kind of just like “okay” and didn’t question it a lot? Like they just accepted it and didn’t want to overstep or something is what I mean

I think his most usual shifts would be teeth/scales, but they're a lot more subtle so he either doesn't notice them as much or can ignore them. Those ones are probably semi-regular for him but again, more subtle most of the time (most of the time... every once in awhile he gets hit with a stronger maw shift and he's just sitting there gnashing his teeth at the air for like an hour cause his mouth feels weird until it goes away). Maybe also horns.

Less common ones for him but ones he'd notice more are probably wings, tail, and talons. Talons i mostly just think would be funny for him cause he has his habit of tapping his fingers as a stim. Him getting tripped up from the phantom talons while trying to stim, being confused for a minute about why his fingers aren't touching the table and he just ends up tapping out morse code into the air a couple inches above his desk instead. Wings and tail would probably just be pretty standard phantom limbs - they're just there and he's aware of them and maybe able to move them a bit. I imagine he'd eventually try to make some 'kin gear to help with those shifts specifically just so his brain stops error 404ing when his dragon limbs pass through solid objects despite his brain thinking they should be able to tangibly interact.

I don't think Leo would know what otherkin/alterhuman is when he first meets the Argo II crew, and probably wouldn't get the opportunity to learn about it for awhile. He doesn't really have the vocabulary to explain how he's feeling - just that he Is A Dragon. The rest of the crew probably also doesn't know what otherkin/alterhuman is either so they don't have an explanation for him, but, yknow, demigod life is already so goddamn weird, if Leo says he's a dragon that's not the most abnormal thing they've heard that week and they'll just take his word for it and accept it. And Jason probably understands the feeling re: being a wolf therian, even though he doesn't have the vocabulary to explain it either, so there's at least some solidarity there.

Earlier on I think Leo would just crack a lot of jokes about being a dragon, not particularly explaining how he feels about it to the others but just kind of putting the concept out there. He might try to explain it if the topic comes up but, as mentioned before, just struggle too much to try and find the words for it (the adhd/dyslexia/autism wording problems do not help there). I do like to think though that, due to their Hades/Pluto kid soul powers, Nico and Hazel would actually be able to pick up on spiritual-origin otherkin/therians/etc if they focused on it - Nico in particular, probably a lot more passively - and be able to kind of see phantom limbs/shifts sometimes (cause goodness knows how souls/spirit stuff works in the Riordanverse and I can have my self-indulgent silly alterhuman worldbuilding hcs if i want to - also at least partially inspired by some journal posts i've read of people mentioning people/animals/automatic doors picking up on their phantom limbs and being able to track the movement and stuff. if any demigod would be able to do that it's gonna be the kids with literal soul/phantom powers). I just find the concept amusing of Leo trying to explain this extremely metaphysical experience and Nico's just off to the side like "Oh yeah no, your soul is a dragon. Like, very literally. Dunno how that happened but good for you. btw why do you have ghost wings sometimes?" And Leo's grateful for someone helping him explain it but also isn't sure how he should react to statement. Eventually though one of the crew stumbles across alterhuman stuff - probably Leo or Annabeth, most likely accidentally through looking into daemonism stuff (you know they both read His Dark Materials) - and they put two and two together and finally have a means to explain it and Leo could not be more relieved (though he still doesn't know how to feel about Nico's soul comments).

okay i am convinced that miss grace abigail chasity was really into twilight and while this may sound out of character i swear i have justification. so she, despite being a christian and "should be against witchcraft" (i'm citing those satanic panics you see about lil nas x. i am a christian and projecting hard on our girl), does love the spooky story about the waylons. she's the one who tells the rest of the gang about that legend, very enthusiastically might i add. her parents clearly don't like that sorta stuff - too witchcrafty for them - but she suggests the holy "ghosts". this could be in part her paying too much attention to max's fears, but it could also be the thing on the top of her brain because. she likes "too much" of these sorts of things, but may not be able to indulge in them too often. the reason why i say twilight specifically is that stephenie meyer is a mormon and includes some of those themes. i think that she'd probably judge meyer for being a mormon, but the lead does technically die for having sex, and she vibes with those ethics (grace chasity so fucked up my beloved). and, said sex scenes only occur within marriage. edward is insistent on waiting and that very much appeals to her.

like, grace is a canonically shit liar, but she does plan for if she gets asked. fortunately, her parents have no reason to suspect her. i think that she sneakily read the copies in the school library - she didn't have a lot of friends to sit with, anyway - and slammed the book shut when she reached the sex scenes in breaking dawn. i mean, to me, the max coming into her bathroom reminds me a little of the edward watching bella sleep. you know breaking and entering, it's cute.

He was half of Will’s soul, as the poets say. 

Will supposed he always had been. Ever since that day in kindergarten, when he’d come up to him with a nervous smile adorning his round face. 

“Do you want to be my friend?” He’d asked quietly, rocking back and forth on his toes and heels. 

Will had been sitting on a swing, feet barely grazing the ground as he swung. He’d looked at him, eyes wide, and had returned the smile. “Sure.”

Now, kneeling on the cold, dead ground in hell next to the body of his best friend, his love, the only person who knew when Will’s smile was fake or when he needed to be cheered up, Will sobbed. 

He sobbed in agony, because it felt as though he had been shot through the chest with a gun owned by Nancy Wheeler. 

It felt as though he was blind, his unseeing eyes staring at the red sky that mirrored the color of the bloody tears that fell down his pale cheeks. 

It felt as though his bones had been broken, facing every which way. 

It felt like Will was the one that had died. 

But no. Death would be too simple. To die would be too peaceful. 

If he had died, Will wouldn’t have felt the pain that ripped through him as he grasped the front of his best friend’s bloody green shirt, the same shirt that had held a letter in the lapel pocket, right over his heart. 

If he had died, Will wouldn’t have screamed, from deep inside of his torn-up soul and through his throat, searing every inch of Will’s insides as it made its way up, spilling over his lips like the blood that had spilled over his love’s just moments ago. 

Will reached down to grab his hand, now. It was cold and stiff, and Will realized, belatedly, that it would never hold a pen again.

But his love still had so many stories to tell. 

It wasn’t fair. He was too young. He was too young, and too beautiful, and the last word on his lips had been Will’s name, and it had felt dirty, stained in the thick blood that had seemed to connect them since that fateful day on the swings. 

Mike was half of Will’s soul. 

And now, half of Will’s soul is gone.

What Yandere I think Ancient Greek mythology boys would be.

Achilles:

🏺- I feel like if Achilles was a yandere he’d be more akin to the typical yandere. Jealous, possessive…almost like a land mine

🏺- He’s protective of you and wants your attention…only your attention. I think that speaks for itself about how this relationship would go.

🏺- He’s not overly touchy, but in public.,he has this weird thing about ‘laying claim’ to what’s his and making everyone know it..even if it embarrasses you…he’ll caress you thigh openly int public among other…things… he also tends to squeeze you into his chest and ha has a thing for biting- and boy does it hurt..if you don’t stop him at times..you’ll be bleeding by the end of it

🏺- If you’re at home- he wants you in his arms. You’re sitting on the sofa? He’ll put you in his lap. You’re lying in bed? He’ll jump on top of you. And he’s heavy- so good luck getting him off of you.

🏺- despite his concerning behaviour..he truly does care about you..in his mind..you’re the only one that matters. He wants you to be with him for as long as possible..and don’t even think about trying to break up with him..he’ll find you.

Patroclus:

🌿- Patroclus would be one of those yanderes that aren’t openly a yandere..he’s more docile and less explosive. Though- he still has those red flags.

🌿- He’s a manipulator. Especially if you’re a sensitive and emotional individual- he’ll exploit that. Gaslighting you at times and telling you “I know what’s best for you, darling”. Yeah..not really the best part of this relationship.

🌿- He’s more touchy than Achilles. He loves to have his face nuzzled into your neck whenever he can..breathing in your scent as he holds you in his arms. Letting out a content sigh as he kisses your lips tenderly..but don’t let that tenderness fool you..he’s still got a few screws loose.

🌿- He’s the type of yandere to act calm whenever someone is trying to hit on you in public..usually it’s when you’re not around is when he finds that person and either beats them half to death or worse..he use to be a medic and warrior..he knows more than one way to put people through pain. Though I’d have to be very bad for him to immediately clock to that mode.

🌿- He knows you’ll never leave him..how pathetic of you to try.,you keep running back to his arms anyway even if you do. He’ll break you as many times as he needs to have you in his arms..he’s patient.. and once you do come back..either in tears for just looking like a sad puppy..he’ll pamper you and stroke your hair as he kisses you lips and whispers how much he loves you.

Perseus:

🛡️- This is a bit tricky..He’s like…an enthusiastic yandere..that’s how I describe it. He has limits on how far he’ll go..but that doesn’t mean he won’t do certain things.

🛡️- He’s not explosive like Achilles and he’s not a big manipulator like Patroclus. He’s a bit chill. He’s the one that is similar to being docile but at the same time his yandere tendencies will seep out.

🛡️- He actually warns you what will happen if you do A, B, and C. Because he doesn’t want to hurt you in any way..he just wants to have a loving relationship with you without any casualties. Occasionally he’ll get mad..but he’ll never take it out on you..never. Though..a few chains here and there can’t hurt..right?

🛡️- He loves to be with you..he’ll check on you at work.. on the street at home..any time really. He’s just trying to look out for you and makes his hit list anyway

🛡️- So far you’ve never had a problem with him..he’s not very overbearing..he’s smart in how he does things..you’ll never know what he does when you’re asleep..you’ve never considered leaving him..and he’d like to keep it that way..he wants to shower you with words of praise and devotion,

Orpheus:

🎼- Orpheus is what I’d call a clingy yandere. When he first met you..it took him awhile to fall for you but when he did and you both got together it was a done deal for him.

🎼- He’s so clingy..he doesn’t like to be anywhere without some physical touch involved. After losing his first love- he won’t lose you. He’ll never lose you..he’ll make sure of it.

🎼- He peppers your face with kisses in public that it makes even married couples jealous..dear lord. His words are sweet and filled with honey.

🎼- Sometimes he wishes he had the power to hypnotise you with his voice..so he could make sure that you’d stay with him forever..but I guess looking you inside will have to do..trapping you under his body as he cuddles you will have to be enough.. chaining you to the bed as you both sleep together is what he has to settle for…such effort.

🎼- Once when you tried to leave him, he literally got down on his knees and begged you to the point of tears to not leave him..he said how he couldn’t live without out you and how he’ll harm himself if you do leave him…you fell for his trap and stayed with him..having pity on this poor man. Perfect..he likes it when you break and ignore your better judgement for him.

Pyrrha is a nickname. When Achilles first got to Skyros he was extremely angry and distraught. He didn’t want to talk with anyone and wanted to sulk in his room. The handmaidens nicknamed him Pyrrha (the myth says hair color, but we all know it’s moreso his personality).

Pyrrha was not a planned roleplay persona. She evolved (perhaps into more than pretend 😉). The handmaidens were naturally curious of newcomers to the island, and for sure the sulking/crying she was doing was certainly gossip fodder. what happened, are you ill, did you refuse to marry, are you being punished, have they separated you from your love, are you forced to marry another And of course when she let it slip that she’s been separated from her lover, the handmaidens got excited. They love a great drama. And so Pyrrha wove this elaborate tale of forbidden love, a secret marriage, and a kidnapping. (Deidamia was naturally jealous of all the attention being stolen from her)

Pyrrha came to Skyros under the lie that she was an Amazon warrior ready for marriage but requiring lessons first. Pyrrha’s “truth” she came to believe was that Amazon warriors cannot marry and when the Queen found out about her secret lover, she was sent away to prepare for a proper marriage. But it was a good cover to explain her strengths and weaknesses in the art of being a woman.

Pyrrha is actually good at weaving. She’s good with her hands. She HATED weaving class. BORING. She would spend most of it daydreaming of her husband and different ways he might rescue her. It got to the point where she told so many stories that she started to forget what the truth was.

Pyrrha is okay at cooking. Achilles learned to cook with Chiron, but it was more rustic/camping/bachelor cooking. She can’t bake, her bread never rises, but she can cook mostly everything when given a recipe. She’ll need help though. She often gets distracted by memories and daydreams of cooking with her husband.

She is good at household management, manners, and posture due to her princely upbringing. She still had to attend the classes as she had to learn the female verions. She didn’t care for the classes just as Achilles didn’t.

But she LOVES LOVES LOVES dancing. She picked it up quickly. She’s graceful and full of energy, so it was the perfect activity for her. (Deidamia was crazy jealous of Pyrrha’s skills)

Also due to her natural demigod skills, she picked up makeup and hairstyles easily. The handmaidens were happy to show her different hairstyles and whatnot. Pyrrha had great hair, so they loved to style it.

(not to sound like I’m feminizing Achilles, but Skyros was BORING) Surprising, or maybe not so, but Pyrrha loves to gossip. When Deidamia wasn’t around to bring down the mood, the handmaidens would share their own stories with each other. A few were having affairs with local fishermen. A couple girls had the privilege of going to the market in town. They would return with local gossip and news (Pyrrha was desperate for possible news of her husband).

But the real gossip happened at night 😈. Nighttime was for the unofficial “wife school.” Their favorite topic to gossip and giggle over? Sex. The non-virgins would pass on their knowledge of pleasing your husband. Pyrrha had a lot to share about handjobs whenever the topic arose. (I’m split on oral as at time and in certain city-states, oral was seen as dirty and something only prostitutes performed) (I’m also split on if Pyrrha leaned about anal sex from these gossip sessions. Part of me thinks they had progressed to anal back on Pelion -TSoA implied fingering in that first time! There is a really great fic that explores these firsts. But I think Skyros is also plausible as the handmaidens would discuss anal as “birth control”) And yes, they did practice kissing. Pyrrha was not a big fan as after her first girl kiss Iphis commented that her chin was “scratchy.”  

The non-virgin handmaidens all had olisbos. Pyrrha at first refused when two of the others secretly got her one from the market. But eventually she had one too many daydreams and succumbed to the temptation.

Pyrrha was hit on by multiple men from the palace as well as several locals. She found it extremely flattering, but soon became annoyed due to the number of admirers she gained. Once at a feast a man grabbed her wrist and tried to pull her to an alcove. She beat him up.

At another feast she overheard a group of drunk men making licentious comments about the handmaidens. One of the men commented on her lovely hair and face. Another man responded that she was too flat chested to tempt him. Pyrrha was self-conscious about this ever since.

Oh, and the real reason Achilles died? As Pyrrha he attended a number of women’s only festivals. He sacrificed and prayed under false pretenses. Hera took offense to this mockery of marriage and fertility.

Anyways

Pyrrha’s life got unexpectedly complicated when Patroclus showed up. Of course the very first thing she did was show off her perfect, handsome husband to the handmaidens (they adored him). But it was tough. She didn’t like the way a few of them ogled her husband. Even worse was her schedule. Of course she wanted to go fishing and climb the cliffs, but there was also dance practice to consider and also Diomede had an update on if the eldest son of the pottery merchant broke off his betrothal and was now on the market (but husbands just didn’t get these things).

Pyrrha loves to call Patroclus “husband.” It’s an endearment, a pet name, and a substitute for “daddy” 😈. It drives Pat wild 😉.

It took Patroclus a while to get the hang of managing Achilles. You don’t just develop BDE overnight. But Pyrrha? Ha! Pat has zero defenses. She gets away with E V E R Y T H I N G. Coy Pyrrha is usually enough to do the trick (she gets close, slides her hands up his chest, wraps her arms around his neck, pressed up against him, runs her bare foot up and down his calf). But if there is some hesitance, she turns on the tears. Pat didn’t even stand a chance. And he has no idea he’s being manipulated.

Pyrrha did not get to say goodbye to the handmaidens. The palace guards would not let Achilles near the woman’s quarters after he was found out. This made him sad. The handmaidens were only confused. They couldn’t believe that Pyrrha was a man in disguise. They missed her a lot. A few prayed for her (also why Hera was mad).

After Skyros, Pyrrha only reappeared a few times. It was always in The TentTM. And it usually happened after Achilles won some more feminine items (once anklets, then lip paint, and once a dress).

That’s all I can think of for Iliad/TSoA HCs at the moment. I share a lot of the opinions of this great fic. Did you mean modern AU instead?

Gods I'm thinking about Chris/Clarisse/Silena/Beckendorf polycule so much

Rereading scenes from tlo and why they're much smaller moments, it just feels so much like they were all together-

The way he trails off?? The way Thaila stepped in quickly in a way you see people do to rush things along when someone I obviously upset?

Like, just in general the idea of Clarisse falling in love with two who technically worked for Luke? And who suffered from that? And just- ugh

Chris is also seen with Clarisse comforting Silena after Beckendorf's death. And just the whole time he seems like he's trying to keep it together for all of them.

I know it probably me over-analyzing,but let's be honest that's most of my post hdhdf

Also, just think about Chris having known about Silena, and kept it to himself cause he knew the position she was in.

We see him described as looking "guilty" with Beckendorf's death, and overall just love the idea of Silena and him bounding. Her using her charmspeak to pull him out of panic attacks and him supporting her through dealing with Luke

I know I seen some people tend to use the Achilles and Patroclus parrels with Ruegard as a way to say that Clarisse didn't romantically love Chris by comparing him to Briseis but???

Like- wouldn't that be the other way around then???

Also over all its not a great comparison cause Chris was a guy they rescued unlike Briseis who was a literal trophy wife.

Like she was a prisoner of war, that Achilles literally got upset over being taken away from him. Like the Achilles and Patroclus and Clarisse and Silena thing is fair but like...Briseis was literally forced to be with the greeks. Chris wasn't. He wanted nothing to do with Luke or Kronos anymore.

Literally the chariot thing in the books? That's a comparison between Achilles vs Agamemmon and Clarisse vs Michael in a lot less uncomfortable way

Cause they're fighting over Briseis,a human, like the Ares and Apollo cabin fight over the chariot.

Actually, it's because of Apollo ironically that they ended up there.

BECAUSE AGAMEMMON WAS UPSET HE HAD TO GIVE ANOTHER GIRL BACK TO A PRIEST OF APOLLO AFTER APOLLO PLAGUED THE GREEKS.

SO HE TOOK ACHILLES' TROPHY WIFE INSTEAD

Like, yes there's comparisons, but this is another case of ancient heroes vs modern heroes theme I could go on about hdhdf

its basically a divergent universe from about halfway through shadow puppets where instead of taking over the compound achilles just runs. in this story i’ve characterized achilles a lot differently where he’s less of an R-rated looney toons villain and more of like. a Guy. he just wants to survive and believes that world governments are obsolete and weak and his real chances of survival are back in his element: the streets.

but before he leaves, he makes sure to leave his mark on peter. they have a one night stand after tensions between them inevitably rise, which they both craved and regretted. it was the most loved achilles ever felt, the most love that peter had ever shown. but it also cemented achilles’ decision to leave.

achilles leaves, and peter lets him.

it changes peter. he gets his shit together and decides to actually do his job. he ends up going into the field as much as his office. takes it upon himself to learn self defense and distance himself as far as possible from being achilles’ parallel. he doesn’t want to be associated with him, doesn’t want to remember him. he’s a lot more jaded, gives up the hegemon position at a relatively young age and decides to spend the rest of his years as an underground journalist and informant. there’s probably a bounty on his head in a few countries. he has managed to piss many, many people off (as per usual).

as for achilles, he goes back to rotterdam to reclaim his crown. he’s something like a boogeyman there. he controls most of the waterways and their “cargo”, which can vary from drugs to weapons to refugees escaping the war waged in the east. he’s a benevolent leader but a foreboding foe. yeah, he’ll take you in whenever you’d like, but if you wrong him he’ll have your head. he’s both a businessman and family man, being savvy while keeping those around him afloat. if the leaders he served under didn’t do it right, then he sure as hell will.

as for the rest of the cast, i think most of them have moved on. it’s about a decade or two after the events of the shadow saga, bean is in space, petra making a life for herself without him, virlomi and suriawong following their own endeavors trying to repair their countries after the events of shadow of the hegemon. it’s a more peter / achilles centric story in that sense.

now i don’t really know Why peter has to work with achilles, but he does at some point. it’s going to have to do with some international scandal and achilles’ connections. it’s a partners in crime type of thing, while also trying to navigate their past fling.

there’s a lot of bad blood between them, but they make up (and make out).

so... did you know that there are songs inspired by the tales of cú chulainn, deirdre and (more or less) patroclus? and that they're actually pretty good at capturing their essence and the message of their tales?

The Blood of Cú Chulainn by Jeff & Mychael Danna has no vocals but the mix of an upbeat and solemn rhythm, the ominous and the inspirational, the spirited and the heartbreaking, the lighthearted and the bittersweet perfectly represents the life and death of Cú Chulainn. It's the kind of song that picks you up when you're at a low point and reminds you of the good of the world that is worth fighting for. It's the kind of song that gives you hope, just like how Cú Chulainn's life and death were hopeful and inspiring despite the adversity and hardships.

Deirdre by The Beach Boys is both a gentle and calming love song and an oddly eery and uncomfortable song the more attention you pay to the lyrics. On one hand, it narrates how it is to love Deirdre (probably from Naoise's POV), her swiftness, and that she's not meant to stay in one place forever but that's not a bad thing. On the other hand, it could be just as easily sung from Conchobar's POV and that completely changes the tone of the song, taking a much darker turn and it's about the inability to accept rejection, running away and being found again by a stalker that is too deep in his own delusions.

Achilles come down by Gang of Youths is a song about battling depression, of dueling forces between one's self-loathing and the concern of their loved ones. It constantly changes between the caring and the want to help, coming from a place of love and understanding (Patroclus) to harsh words, self-deprecating and suicidal ideation (Achilles). When the latter gets too bad, the first is quick to interrupt to cut that line of thought, to try to help, to find an alternative solution, to be there and remind them that they'll always be there.
