😞 Miss Aldridge Regrets (Canary Club Mystery #1) (Louise Hare, author; Georgina Campbell, narrator) - This isn't a mystery the MC investigates, it's a mystery that happens TO her. She was tediously passive, seeming really rather naïve & foolish (esp given her age and life experience) and entirely in denial about pretty much everything that happens to her (since she's being actively framed for murder). However, the very short interval chapters from the killer's perspective did hook my interest and left me genuinely curious about the mystery. At about 44% I jumped to the end to see how the mystery resolved. I'm counting it as read since I did read over 50% of it.

😍 A Most Agreeable Murder (Julia Seales, author; Fiona Hampton, narrator) - comical pastiche/parody mashup of: Jane Austen (specifically), regency-set/gothic novels (in general) & Agatha Christie/country house mysteries - funny & entertaining, deftly done. Very Nightmare Abbey vibes in the absolute best way. I enjoyed all the caricature characters but 'overlooked tedious (but secretly a [redacted]) sister' Mary was my fave, absolute gothic queen

Confused by the question. If you’re asking what I, myself, am wearing while doodling, probably pajamas tbh. If you’re asking what sort of outfit I like to draw characters in, usually just their canon outfit tbh. But I’m an absolute sucker for RIDICULOUS and FABULOUS blazers and coats for my original characters. ✨✨✨

I wouldn’t say any of them really creepy me out, so I’ll just share my two favorites, which are The Pumpkin Song (mention of a cat + mecore fr) and Hamantha (she’s just impossible to ignore).

No plain water ever again. If I’m really craving WATER, I’ll just drink water with a liiiittle bit of lemon juice or smthn in it to make it *technically* not “just plain water”.

The worst job? For me, personally, definitely a hooker. I’m asexual- I think that speaks for itself. I also just don’t really like touching people in general yk?

I pet that critter until it’s so happy it starts headbutting my hand. I’m gonna pick it up and carry it with me to wherever I need to go. (Unless it’s outside, in which case I will make that critter the BEST, MOST COMFORTABLE little spot to snuggle EVER and I will cuddle them when I return from The Outside.)

Clay! I’m mostly a sculpture artist and clay is super great to work with because of how easy it is to shape. I’m a bit pickey with my clay though- I don’t really like air dry clays or baking clays because of how weirdly rubbery they are. You can’t make slip (equal parts clay and water-basically clay glue) with them and if you’re building a Thing in pieces, it is an absolute NIGHTMARE to try to attach them securely. Low-fire cone 05-06 white clay and mid-high-fire cone 5-6 speckled buff clay bodies are my favorites to work with because of how soft they are- they make really good slip and it’s easy to build in pieces because they attach super easily with just a little bit of scoring, slipping, and pulling. I can get a ton of detail in firing clays that air dry and baking clays just won’t allow. I also generally prefer the look of glaze to paints on my art. I like creating utilitarian items from clay too, so I need glazed stoneware to make them food safe. Like this cool sgraffito plate I made last year!

There’s also a ton of amazing decorating techniques that are possible with firing clays, but not air dry or baking clays. One of my favorites is definitely raku, which is where you fire a piece to bisque, then apply raku glaze (special glaze) and fire that. BUT here’s the important part that makes it raku- you have to fire it at an insanely high temperature (750°C) VERY QUICKLY and take it out of the kiln while it’s red-hot. Then you stick it straight into a metal container of some sort with flammable material in the bottom (shredded newspaper, dried leaves, etc.) and let it catch fire. Then you put the lid on the metal container and let it burn until it runs out of air. Now you can either let it sit in there for a while to cool or you can remove it to let it cool- it doesn’t particularly matter. Firing with this method makes the most INSANE glaze patterns and it’s also so gorgeous omg- Here have some examples:

It’s really pretty and super fun to do because it’s not often that you get to set your art on fire and have it turn gay. I’ve done exactly one raku firing and it was one of the absolute best things I’ve ever done. SO fun.

okay so these!! aren't as fleshed out as riley and kiara they're kind of just silly little guys mostly.

libby, 17, is one of kiara's friends, alongside trinity and kat (collectively known as the cool bitch club). libby is very like… calm and chill most of the time she's just vibing mostly. the kind of guy you'd see in a group chat. absolutely hates that she was named liberty eagle lawson that's right her middle name is eagle she's living a nightmare. she was literally born on the 4th of july the universe just said "hey fuck you. get america'd" and she hasn't lived it down yet. anyways the group of friends i roleplay with that i use her in jokes that she would kin sans and tbh…. probably right. she's usually pretty calm but if anyone hurt her brother she'd kick their ass

justice, 10, is just a silly little guy!! just a little silly! he's one of riley's best friends and he looks up to her even though she's only 2 years older than him. he's really silly goofy, very optimistic, tries to see the best in everyone, and overall he just wants to help people whenever he can!! he's like a blorbo to me.

they're actually half siblings! they share a dad. their dad used to be… not distant, and not away on purpose, but during his first marriage, when he had libby, he would bite off more than he can chew and end up promising things that he couldn't deliver, fully thinking he would be able to. it's what led to his divorce. since then, though, he's worked on bettering himself and is a much better father to justice than he was to libby when she was younger. she's not entirely unaffected by this but she can at least appreciate that he's improving.

they also! have a cousin, who's a lawyer. a defense attorney. and justice especially really looks up to him because he also wants to be able to stand up for people and defend people in need like that and justice i think really just wants, at his core, to help people who need help, like one of his main interests is superheroes because that's their whole thing really.

justice has a really cool racecar bed

libby helped justice try to paint his racecar bed and it didn't go very well but they both have fond memories of it

libby and kiara honestly probably met through justice and riley

libby is really into activism. in a sense both siblings have a strong sense of justice and aim to help those who need it

i mentioned earlier that they had a lawyer cousin but i didn't mention said cousin is phoenix wright of ace attorney fame

libby actually convinced her high school to unionize. her logic is that teachers are evaluated on the grades their classes get- so if a teacher is being unfair or necessarily harsh, the students can go on strike by refusing to do any assignments, forcing the teacher to fail ALL of their students and then get poor evaluations and probably fired. it's been surprisingly effective and she's very proud of the student union

libby is the kind of person who says "stealing from walmart is always morally correct"

justice hasn't been exposed to the nuances of stealing so he doesn't agree but i think once he's been exposed to how companies kind of fuck people over he probably will stop seeing an issue with, like, shoplifting a bottle of water from walmart

libby is a lesbian

Info:

Dust is the Vessel of the Holy for the Path of Righteousness, a cult/religion. This necessitates that he be excised of all sin and made ready for possession by the Holy- via torture. Also he’s trans and has taken to reciting the Bible-equivalent as a coping mechanism.

May-Salvation-Come-to-this-Wretched-Thing (goes by May, named by the Righteous) is a were-Tasmanian Devil, taken in by the same church. She, too, must be exorcised.

She’s about four years older than him, and they were thrown in the same basement. She became his primary caretaker, and they basically adopted each other. She fervently hates the Righteous, but is determined to protect him at all costs.

When May was about fourteen, the ‘exorcisms’ went too far, the Tasmanian Devil took over, and May died. She then possessed Dust as a ghost and promptly broke them out.

Dust doesn’t remember how he got out, or how May died, and May doesn’t want to tell him. May thinks he should hate her, she hates herself for everything, but can’t bear to lose him.

Can I ask a question? You moved into your house not that long ago right? Have you done any house projects since you moved in? Or discovered any house secrets?

Most of the weird house stuff was stuff that literally drew me to want to buy it in the first place tbh

Like the photos were pleasantly honest! (Which is great considering I bought this bitch ONLINE without ever seeing it in person hahaha 🫠)

Like I can tell that whoever made this house wanted to make something original and quirky and I'm in love with it. There are so many weird angles and design choices with zero rhyme or reason. like why do those walls connect at a 30° angle like that?? Why are there beams everywhere? What shape is that room even supposed to be???

It's just.. FUN. Literally when I saw the pictures on zillow for this place, I was like "weird!" But then saved it. And then returned to it over and over again while looking at other places and eventually I just knew it was the one. Like I couldn't get it out of my mind

But like, how could I pass it up? It was less than 200k$ and 2300 square feet on 5 acres of land down a wooded lane!! J-j-j-jackpot!

There are some totally weird and funky design choices and there's a lot I WANT to do.

Some examples (ignore lazy or nonexistent decorating, i havent gotten around to doing anything yet):

There's this nasty ass wall paneling throughout like 1/3rd of the house that looks like the walls of a motor home and I HATE IT. It's ugly and stupid and I tore off one panel to see what was underneath and guess what! It's normal wall! (Ignore hot lady calendar)

Except the glue from the paneling kinda ripped off parts of it but like THEY JUST GLUED THIS SHIT ON OVER WALLPAPER?? WHY? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? JUST REMOVE THE WALLPAPER AND PAINT, ITS SO MUCH EASIER THAN THROWING UP THIS UGLY BULLSHIT. ugh

So like yeah I wanna remove all of that, but it's gonna be a big project because there's a LOT and some of it is underneath the cabinets in the kitchen. Yikes.

Pretty much every ceiling is tall and slanted in some weird way, which makes me dread painting because how am I supposed to paint super high up like that when I only got a 7 foot ladder???

The house is 1.5 stories too, which means that there's a partial upstairs that is essentially just a little loft thing that looks out over the living room and then this small, strange room we affectionately refer to as "Travis's room" for reasons I think will soon be obvious....

We will honestly probably have to hire a contractor to come look at this upstairs area because part of the ceiling is like... collapsing? And all gross and dirty? (Kinda visible in that second photo) It's not attached to the roof so like, the outside is fine and isn't leaking or in danger of caving in but idk it's just kinda weird and I have no idea what the thought process was for this whole upstairs area. Like what is this narrow little sliver of room here? (Ignore hot wheels tracks)

And the ceiling fan next to the staircase is SO CLOSE lmao if it's on and you lean even a little bit over the railing, you're getting brained. Like in this pic I'm not reaching out, just lifting my arm to touch it (ignore dust, I don't clean and you can't make me)

The living room is really big but it's also weirdly shaped so organizing my furniture is a nightmare. Especially since there's a pellet stove (currently not working) on one wall. (ignore dirty socks, mismatched cheap lamps, messy cat tree corner behind couch, big ugly coffee table I got for free that used to be black until I sanded it down but then got bored and left it as is)

As of right now, I haven't done much to the place because wow apparently home improvement takes effort and costs money??? Go figure. And we've been pretty broke lately so I've just been collecting ideas for the time being.

I am absolutely gonna start painting this year though. My bedroom rn is just boring white so I wanna fix that. Maybe do something dark and warm like a dark brown or green or hmm something like that. The room I've been calling the "gym" (because that's where I put the treadmill) will probably get done next since it's such a blank slate and should be easy to fix up.

And I absolutely want to mess around with my office because the way it's arranged and decorated rn is lame. They painted a bunch of rooms an ugly ass flat brown color, including several closets, my office, and the spare bathroom so THATS got to go.

I want to start decorating for real, finally buy some frames for the art I've been collecting so I can hang them up on some of these tall ass walls.

I also have plans to make a catio out back and even have a bunch of wood and some of the frames constructed but I got bored and abandoned it haha 😄

Oh and I want to reeeeally start doing stuff with the outside. I want to plant trees and maybe do a garden this year, tear up the plants I don't want and replace them with ones I do, clean up the big ass plot of land that's just overgrown brush and weeds and maybe make it into an orchard? Get some fruit trees and make some cute little rows? Maybe I'll even build a fence and a pond and put flowers everywhere. You know, for the bugs 💌🐝🐛🦋🕷

Now i just need to win a million dollars so I can afford to do it all 🥲

I think the relationship came about completely accidentally, they were both focused on other things and Rantaro was pretty severely injured when they met, neither of them were thinking about even really being friends it all just sorta…. Happened.

Kokichi as a person is so… messy. That’s really the only good word for it. I think it’s a serious testament to Rantaro’s patience that he was able to take the time to break through to the Real Kokichi™️ at all.

But anyway, cute headcanon time:

They’ve definitely painted each other’s nails at least once. Rantaro had a lot of free time during recovery and he needed something to do heh heh. Kokichi’s nails looked perfect (though they didn’t last long at all) and when Kokichi tried to do Rantaro’s he got a little distracted and they ended up being smeared, but Rantaro still liked them a lot.

Kokichi kept Rantaro’s ring in his pocket because he was always afraid he’d accidentally melt it, he’d only ever wear it on occasions where he knew with 100% certainty that he wouldn’t have any reason for his power to get a little overactive. (So… anytime he was around Rantaro, because that avocado can calm him down just by being standing the same room as him now)

The actual conversation of them deciding they were on fact dating was probably unbearable tbh. It would be like an hour of Kokichi avoiding giving any concrete answer and Rantaro just… waiting for an actual response. He’s the most patient guy on the planet, he’ll wait an hour and half for Kokichi to finally work his way around to saying “yeah let’s do that- hold my hand now actually”

Kokichi is very obnoxious about giving affection, will climb up on Rantaro’s shoulders to kiss his cheek, very loudly announce that he’s about to kiss or hug him, hold his hand and swing it around so much it sort of looks like he might dislocate his own arm in the process- but he is a MESS when Rantaro’s the one to initiate romantic gestures first. Even if it’s something small like… Rantaro kissing his hand or something, Kokichi’s face goes red and he has to try and joke his way out of having an Actual Feeling or he’ll melt into a little puddle right then and there

Rantaro’s an older sibling- to many many younger ones- so he’s more used to helping out for others than having other people do things for him, Kokichi absolutely tries to rectify this as often as he can. He pays very close attention to everything from Rantaro’s favorite soda to which music style he prefers listening to on the radio and Kokichi will make sure Rantaro gets things he enjoys too. He also tries to stop Rantaro from always overexerting himself for other people but…. Well you see how that worked out.

And to end things on a sadder note, since I am feeling evil today: Rantaro forgetting him completely hurt Kokichi more than he’d ever want to admit. It sort of took this tentative new hopeful worldview he was developing and shattered it into a million pieces. He really just… can’t have good things. No matter what. Nothing ever works out okay. (But we’ll learn more about all that later in the fic, heh heh)

Darkness in Triplicate is so just wow incredible, i fell absolutely in love with this fic. i've always loved this trio and felt like you could do a lot with them in fan content bc yes they totally trauma bonded over the dark power possessing them and yes they have never had a decent conversation with each other. the possiblities!!!!!!!!

finally Ursa Minor is a fic i adore bc,,, what if they were actually friends? and what if they spend some casual down time together? and what if they watched bad movies and painted each others' fingernails? i'll tell you what. fuzz and feels and every good warm thing. that's what.

Going to rant a bit lol

I saw a house on the market today and it finally broke me.  The asking price?  Insultingly high, especially compared to last year’s publicly available tax assessment.  The surrounding area?  Disturbingly lacking in trees despite there being a long, long stretch of vacant tree lawns across the street with no electrical lines to explain the absence of trees in them.  The interior?  Lacking photos except for a halfway decent sitting room and a deeply unimpressive kitchen.  All rubbish tbh.  But my issue that I’ll talk about here?

The exterior paint job.

The people who currently own the house in question are wannabe flippers, and they had the opportunity to rescue this house from its original dated and sunfaded paint job (as seen in the original Google streetview).  They could have given it something nice and timeless and fitting of its architectural style, something that would enhance the value of the home for prospective buyers.  Something sophisticated but bright, something to help the house stand out as the historic treasure it is while not standing out for the wrong reasons.  It would have been so, so easy if they had EVER looked at a properly done-up historic house before or just.  You know.  Consulted with a designer and a painter.

Instead they chose to paint the door, the trim, AND the shutters black and the siding brown-grey.  And they wonder why their hideous grimdark houseflip isn’t selling for over four times what they originally paid for it.  💀💀💀

This is EXACTLY why most paint companies offer collections labeled “historic house colors that stand the test of time!” and conveniently include paint chips with coordinating paint colors for your trim and accents just in case you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing.  “Why not try our online virtual paint so you can see what your house looks like before you waste your money on all that paint?  And check out these other houses that have been painted for inspiration!”  Even without a professional designer and painter’s help it is SO easy nowadays to choose paint colors for a house’s exterior that at least aren’t outright horrible.  I’m not saying people who know what they’re doing shouldn’t stray a bit from the cards, but if you DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING and don’t follow these easy guides, you’ll be like these hapless houseflippers...likely tens of thousands of dollars invested just to hamstring themselves by choosing quite possibly the ugliest paint job a house could have.  If you’re going to spend thousands, you may as well also hire someone to have a look at the exterior and steer you AWAY from dumb decisions like this.

Plus there are about five other houses for sale in this town with this EXACT SAME color “scheme” (if you can even call it that), and not one of them fits in well with the houses around them.  And, I can’t help but notice, these houses are not moving.  No one wants to buy them, especially not for the outrageously inflated prices the sellers want.  And how can anyone be surprised?  Who wants to pay through the nose to live in a black-on-grey nightmare?

Just.  Fuck.  I could have done so much better.  Literally ANYONE could have done better with just a simple paint chip in their hand.  Did these people not even have that?

Much like anything Hojo suggests, Sephiroth is immediately dismissive and pissy and 100% NOT wanting to go along with it. But whatever. No choice. He'll go to this stupid "high school" outing.

Sephiroth is simultaneously the best and worst student in the class. He is always the first to raise his hand and the last one to misbehave. That said, while his answers to every math or science question are completely flawless, his historical explanations are...all wrong. Years of propaganda skewing his perception (unless this is a Shinra-funded school). His reading comprehension is also messy. While he's perfect at vocabulary and drafting detailed reports, he has a very hard time expressing his feelings on the internal struggle of characters and themes. It flies over his head due to his upbringing essentially discouraging imagination or creativity. He really does try his best because he does love reading. But symbolism and artsy novel stuff is very difficult for him to grasp.

Art class is also a bust. All of Sephiroth's paintings are extremely abstract and angry, little more than a bunch of toddler splotches all mixed together. Gym is favorable though. Sephiroth is an absolute unit and pretty much steamrolls everyone in his path no matter the sport.

Sephiroth finds that he at least likes the library. He's NOT about to join a club because that would mean socializing. The football and fencing teams reaaaally want him but he'd much rather just duck out and hide behind the bleachers where it's quiet. Tbh Sephiroth would not like the social aspect as everyone and their mom would be mobbing him, trying to get him to join shit, and basically smothering him with popularity and admiration.

If there's an Astronomy Club, Sephiroth might be VERY pleased at that. And you can bet your ass he'd probably join something completely nerdy like Chess Club or Math Club.

Oh God, Seph in Home Ec. Would be a nightmare. He would burn the place down trying to bake something. And would probably end up (intentionally) sawing someone's hand off in woodshop. Theatre is where the Genesis' of the world hang out but he's not about that drama.

Also school counselor for Seph? IMMEDIATELY picks up there's some weird abusive stuff going on in his home life. A million red checkmarks in his file.

The amount of times that man has gotten hairbrushes stuck in his huge mop of hair is honestly hilarious. Well maybe not to him, because the panic of thinking he'd have to cut his hair off bc he couldn't get the brush out is the last thing he finds funny in the moment lmao

I just know he has a stuffed animal, probably a shark or something that he's had since he was young and he always keeps it in his bed, regardless of whether he cuddles it or not, it's always there

When he's high he will absolutely either spill all of his secrets unintentionally, talk his mouth off and not remember a damn thing about it when sober, or just fall asleep tbh, no in-between

When he can't sleep or has nightmares, he'll go and sit outside his trailer and look up at the sky. He's not even looking for constellations, he's just on the hunt for comfort among the twinkling stars and the glow of the moon that might finally send him off to sleep

His bangs weren't always above his eyebrows. He fucked it up one day and went a bit too short because he jammed the scissors mid-trim and actually ended up loving it so he just kept it and never looked back

He can't sleep with socks on, he says it makes his feet feel claustrophobic

He gives the best hugs. Like next level bear hugs that could go on forever if you don't pull away from his big ol' warm embrace. And tbh, why would you ever want to leave his arms??

I remember when I first came across Red Light and instantly saw the Joker and Harley parallels but what I like is that MC doesn’t seem to have a overt obsession with Hoseok. She still feels like his psychiatrist to me.

If I remember correctly Joker doesn’t even kiss Harley before she goes FULL bat shit. He didn’t put any effort to courting her but gives her false promises and plays into her insecurities.

Hoseok does nun of that, if anything he’s actually acted upon his sentiments, even if they are a lil unorthodox but he showed up. Hoseok is the first to tell MC that she’s too good for this place and people.

Harley was a means to an end so Joker could get out of prison. Then when Harley wouldn’t fucking die cuz she’s honestly too crazy, he just keeps her around for when an expendable situation arises where he’s in the middle of it and needs to escape😭

But again Hoseok stops shit before MC can even get her shit rocked. (Good for my baby😭)

And MC has her head on straight. I even appreciate how much she’s in her head, contemplating how she should toe the line of her relationships.

This is your story to write, but unlike every other ask, I would like for her to remain fairly stable. Like I remember in Part 1 where she smiles at the beheading of a faculty member but coming to understand her character that seems more like a morally grey “that’s well deserved” smile rather than some sadistic killer “I no longer have ANY morals” expression.

Really I can see her becoming more comfortable (morally grey) with the killing of people but never doing it herself unless it was an ABSOLUTE last resort. And honestly Hoseok would have prolly dealt with it before it gets to that point. I would even say he wouldn’t want her to kill or her psyche to warp because that’s what attracted him to her in the first place.

At every turn he’s tried to keep her from being traumatized in his own way. To be honest if she was to become crazy it wouldn’t be for Hoseok’s affection or because of anything he did. It would be these damn people and she would finally say “Fuck it” for herself and the liberation of the nightmares. To her, she would be completely in the right for her actions. I can just see the news calling her crazy for her actions when from a social justice stand point I would call her very sane.

But hopefully that never happens as I think Hoseok and Dr. Kim are a pretty “good” support system (I’m saying this now especially because of Kim. We don’t really know him that well. He could surprise us.)

MC serves as the only light and kindness in that wretched place and Hoseok most certainly wouldn’t turn her, even if she asked (if that’s even possible. Can ya’ll just let the story play out?!😭 DAMN😐)

That’s my Ted Talk. And my petition for a MC to stay the same but maybe starts to see things more from Hoseok’s perspective which even he doesn’t seem without reason. Ya’ll really paint this man as a unhinged killer when he’s really calculated. And that’s actually the worse kind of killer😬 (Uh Candi, you sure you not a mercenary or sum shit cuz you a lil too realistic with the…👀😐)

Thank you SO MUCH for this honestly I’m teary eyed. It’s everything I’ve ever tried to convey in Red Light up to this point all written out beautifully. Just splendid. I haven’t had someone really explain their experience reading it like his and wow 🥹

I can’t say TOO much because plot points could possibly be given away but yes, I think it’s become clear at this rate that Hoseok isn’t actively trying to drive her insane. Every move he makes is for a reason and he doesn’t kill mindlessly. Likewise, MC is trying to hold onto her sanity and stay level headed. Not just for herself, but for her patients. She’s very interested in Hoseok, yeah, but she’s not obsessed to the point of being unhinged or even close to that tbh.

And a final point that you highlighted and I think is very important, every damn character in Red Light is morally gray. They’ll do things that seem kind and fair, they’ll do things that seem insane and horrible. It’s not black and white, it’s every damn shade in between. PLEASE remember that when reading and pondering their personalities and actions ♥️
