vent post

feeling weird tonight. was my last first day of undergrad, and so now it’s spring quarter and my final project before i graduate is officially started.

was also my first class session without the same group of people i’ve been working with all year, new faces, new students, and a new professor. for most of you reading this you’re probably like yeah, no shit, but my school is weird and my last class spanned over two quarters and we all got really close and waking into class and not seeing the same faces and the same people i had grown accustomed to seeing every morning was weird and quite frankly really heartbreaking.

my favorite young butch lesbian i loved to talk about disablity justice and stone butch blues and judith butler wasn’t there (they’re 19? 20? one of the smartest people i know)

my favorite freshman with debilitating anxiety and perfectionism who reminded me so much of myself at his age wasn’t there stressing about a paper that isn’t due for another four weeks

my friend wasn’t sitting a few seats down from me yapping about her shitty ex boyfriend and giving us all the latest updates

my best friend wasn’t sitting in the seat next to me waiting to debrief after in class conversations or drawing little doodles of cats (this one hurts the most- and i realized i was going to miss her but it didn’t truly sink in until sitting in class today and realized i wasn’t gonna see them walk through the door- i wanna cry about it still)

i looked over at the board in class and instead of it being filled with silly doodles of flowers and snoopys and cats in all shapes and sizes and random sea creatures it was wiped completely empty.

my favorite professor was not there anymore to compare notes with over breaks, only accessible by email now

it seems silly to be so upset by a change in class schedule but this class, as maddening as it was, allowed me to fully come into myself this year. i formed a lot of relationships in this class that will stick with me forever and i learned so much about myself and my relation to disablity, academia and how i interact with the world.

i am so excited for this quarter. i really really am. but i’m also still actively mourning the loss of the community i built and lost and i don’t think that’s irrational. or maybe it is and i’m just crazy.

It's always so weird to come down from the biology heavens to see what the average person believes about animals, plants, ecosystems, just the world around them. I don't even mean things that one simply doesn't know because they've never been told or things that are confusing, I'm talking about people who genuinely do not see insects as animals. What are you saying. Every time I see a crawling or fluttering little guy I know that little guy has motivations and drive to fulfill those motivations. There are gears turning in their head! They are perceiving this world and they are drawing conclusions, they are conscious. And yet it's still a whole thing if various bugs of the world feel pain or if they are simply Instinct Machines that are Not Truly Aware of Anything At All????? Help!!!!!! How can you look at a little guy and think he is just the macroscopic animal version of a virus

my prof just explained on the syllabus that he’s included more points in the class than we needed to pass, so we could skip up like?? 20 small assignments/quizzes/participation!! and still get a very high grade!!

the idea was that we could focus on assignments that played to our strengths - only do the participation stuff if we like to talk out loud - only do the quizzes/readings if we want to do the class remotely - only do online discussions if we like to talk and share opinions but struggle with anxiety in class ect.

and that’s cool enough but then he pulled up DnD character sheets with drawings he’d done of these hypothetical student player classes and how our various accessibility needs could be gamified to ‘max out’ different aspects of the class to get high grades and like!!!!!

hell yeah!!!! let’s treat accessibility in higher education not just as a necessity but as the fun, engaging, and creative aspect of learning that it is!!! I love this!!

When I was getting my associates degree I took a course on human sexuality. It was really fascinating and wonderful. One of our assignments was to write about the first time we ever masturbated which was very uncomfortable and silly at the same time.

Mine was extremely boring because there’s nothing exciting about a five year old realizing that climbing the fire pole feels really good.

I told a coworker at the time about the assignment and she laughed and told me about her daughter. They had these really old dining room chairs with carved legs. The chairs had smooth wood bulbs going up them that the kid loved to rub on.

Her mom didn’t want to dissuade her or make her ashamed but she also needed to establish that masturbation should always be private. So she talked to her daughter and explained that she could do that but must do it in her room alone.

The result of which was that everyone was aware the girl was going to masturbate when she dragged the chair into her room to be alone with it.

My friends was my favorite though, because his discovery was in stages. He liked it when his penis would get hard as a kid because it meant he could grab it and pretend to be flying a helicopter. His aha moment was when this happened once in the shower and the grabbing plus soap made him realize something else might be going on.

That was funny on its own, but nothing could match when in the most betrayed tone he said, “It was so much more fun then, before stuff came out at the end.”
