While acknowledging there are different versions and interpetations, I tend to follow the ones I read from the books written by Stephen Fry.

Not only was his the first consistent version I read so pretty naturally the first one I kind of latched onto... But I can't help but feel a lot of the current ideas people put out there for these characters and their stories stem from more Hollywood Stereotypes than original text.

Like Aphrodite's marriage. The version I read is that Ares and Aphrodite were very much in love but Aphrodite was forced to marry Hephaestus in return for him freeing Hera from his own revenge trap. Yet I see a lot of people acting like Hephaestus is the poor victim, Ares is the jerk and Aphrodite is the prize. And it all matches a little too well with the tropes: Hephaestus is the "nice guy outcast", Ares is the "dumb bully jock", and Aphrodite is the "beautiful woman who will eventually realise it's the nice guy she really loves".

Same for the Demeter storyline. A lot of people put a Hollywood romance trope on it by making Persephone and Hades in love from the start and Demeter's just the mother-in-law from hell cliche. Which isn't bad from a light-hearted-retelling perspective but (like Hephaestus) it seems to be the one that a lot of people are clinging to. To the point where they believe the American tropes and cliches are more fact than they actually are.

leo deserved better. he deserved so, so much BETTER. i mean, he fucking sacrificed his LIFE to save the world, and yes, even though he was always meant to come back, there was always that lingering chance the plan WOULDN'T work out.

but what did he get when he finally made his way back home? hugs? maybe a huge welcome home party? NO. instead, everyone got into a fucking LINE and proceeded to hit him, WITH FULL FORCE, immediately upon his arrival back home.

and then there's the issue with calypso. i just HATED the way she treated him in the dark prophecy. like, he was the only dude who BOTHERED to come back for her. he gave her the chance for a new life. but instead, she COMPLAINS about how leo "treats every problem like a machine" when he's working SO hard to fix things.

then later, at the end of the series, we find calypso has become counsellor for a band camp pretty far away, and we learn that part of the reason was "so she could take some time away from him". i mean, what the hell is up with THAT?!

leo's done so many amazing things for so many people, but just how many times do you hear him praised? like honestly, he deserves someone who loves him unconditionally, someone who showers him with love, someone who can fill up the gaps his mother's death left in him. and that someone is NOT calypso.

Instead of resenting Percy for leaving Calypso (which was not his fault), Leo should’ve resented Percy for having met Hephaestus, his own father, more times than he had (Which was also not his fault, but still).

It might’ve been a fun parallel to Luke, where they actually work through it and Leo opens up about his own insecurities about Percy being more of a “Hero” than him. Which was also something Calypso made him self-conscious about, comparing him to Percy and Odysseus bc he doesn’t fit the stereotype of the “Hero”.

He shouldn’t have been mad at him for leaving Calypso, but maybe the fact that Calypso wanted Percy more than him could’ve been something that was explored a little bit more. It would’ve given more weight to Leo’s feeling of inadequacy, and painted Percy in less of an assholish light if that was the reason why Leo resented him (and then hopefully, after working through those issues, Leo realised how toxic Calypso was to him and decides to not go back).

Lmao dw, although I should warn you many of my opinions are the same or very similar on them, so I shortened parts and left others out (elaboration at the end) ZEUS - Tyrannt king who's no better than Kronos in terms of personality who deserves to be overthrown. HERA - Cruel woman who yes, is hurt and props mistreated by Zeus and his actions, but still takes her anger out on innocent people. Also deserves to be overthrown

HADES - Upholding and unjust system who may somewhat be okay to Nico, but still is a shitty parent. He litteraly wanted to force Nico to become the Hero of the Great Prophecy for his own gain despite believing the hero would die. Deserves to be overthrown, and have CPS called on him. POSEIDON - A "nice" dictator is still a dictator y'all. Uses and treats mortal life just as carelessly as everyone else. Him being a good father to Percy does not make him a good guy or someone who is a good ruler. I mean just look at his r*pe bodycount plz DEMETER - Negelctful parent who uses her children as much as canon fodder as everyone else. Helps to uphold an unjust system that uses and abuses literal children and their mortal parents while activley benefiting from it.

APHRODITE - Negelctful parent who also uses and abuses her children. Just because she talked to Piper and helped her dad doesn't make her a good person or mother. The main reason for that is that she does not give that same level of attention and care to the rest of her children- picking favorites is not suddenly "okay" or "cool" just because your favorite character happens to be the favorite child.

ATHENA - Negelectful parent who uses her kids as cannon fodder. And not only that but she's also exceptionally irresponsible considering how she just dumps kids on completely unprepared parents and leaves not helping any further. Ontop of that she's also incredibly prideful and assumes she has some right to meddle with her kids' lives. 90% of the gods deserve to be overthrown but she also deserves a kick in the balls from Annabeth ontop. ARTEMIS - I made multiple posts about how creepy she is already. Borderline creep in her way of specifically going after younger girls. Also not yet sure she ain't leading a borderline cult with the Hunters of Artemis. Also the way she is about men violates so many human rights. Joining her Hunters would be a living nightmare for me, knowing she'd be my patron goddess if I lived in PJO makes me glad she's fictional. Helps to uphold and profits from a system literally killing kids. APOLLO - Helps to uphold a system that's literally killing kids and benefits from it. He uses demigod lives as cannon fodder too. Him "loving" his partners and children does not change the fact that he just leaves/abandons both of them if the kid doesn't happen to be a favorite of his. Jury's still out on him post-TOA and redemtion. If he actively does something against the system to help the demigods or atleast attempts to do we're god. If he doesn't he's even worse than the rest bc now he doesn't even have the "he didn't know any better" excuse. ARES - OG reason I wish Luke won unironically. Tyrant, jerk, probably abusive and misogynistic????? Also the typical case of using his kids as cannon fodder. Neglectful parent 101. HEPHAESTUS - IDK if he talked and helped Leo and said he "watches all his children". He did not help any other of his kids like that, no good father EVER employs even a SMIGE of favoritism. You can watch your kids all you want, if you continue to ignore them, use them as cannon fodder, and actively benefit from the system killing them that makes you a weird stalker at best. But most certainly not a good father OR person. HERMES - I have never seen someone fumble the bag so hard like??? Honestly he deserve a TROPHY for being able to mess up so incredibily much with Luke and May 💀 At this point you can really only describe the guy as inept. He for real just left his innocent newborn son with a woman he KNEW was insane completely alone for no reason??? AND THEN BLAMED LUKE FOR LEAVING HIS MOM/NOT LIKING HER????? Listen idk if he "couldn't have interfered without making it worse" and if it was against some ancient law. Poseidon interferes with Percy a BUNCH even when he was under a prophecy for multiple of his quests and everything turned out fine. Hermes loved Luke, unfortunately he just had a room-temperature IQ. He is also a neglectful parent who uses his kids as cannon fodder- he couldn't care less about any other child of his not named "Luke Castellan". I think that "helps to uphold an unjust system" and "actively benifits from a system that uses kids as cannon fodder with no regards for them" honestly applies to EVERY god with exception of Hestia and the minor gods who joined the TA. They are also all dictators to some degree- remember everybody: A NICE DICTATOR IS STILL A DICTATOR. IF THEY WERE A GOOD PERSON THEY WOULDN'T BE A DICTATOR! I hate the gods for real. Although personally in terms of hate everyone get's an equal amount, but Artemis creeps me out the MOST. (Can I get a restraining order against a goddess?)

Minus the 'Hero of the Great Prophecy' copout,Luke Castellan is such a well-written villain because he's so real.Not sympathic but that he's so awful in the way so many real cishet white men in power are and historically have been always been.Luke is a fascist.He's a misogynist.He's a racist.He's even a serial pedophile

Luke started grooming Silena before the series even started by taking advantege of her crush on him by flirting with her because girls that age don't know any better,oh he's different,we're different.He had the effect on Annabeth too but much stronger due to being her older brother figure and pseudo-dad,raising her since she was 7 and confessed to her at 16,on his deathbed,due to wanting to haunt and have power over her ONE last time.He wanted her to know what he'd thinking the whole time he was pretending to see her platonically.Thalia was 2 years younger than him pre-tree and he still liked her at 15 to his 20s.I'd go as far as to do a Lolita comparison,with Thalia's death giving him that little girl fixation to 'replace' her and let's not forget that while Kelli's age isn't stated,she passed as Percy's classmate when Percy was 14 and wasn't even technically a high schooler and there's no mention of no Mist Kelli showing her as older.It's implied he straight up SLEPT with her and maybe even did it multiple times judging by how long she was in the Titan's Army.She was also the only black girl member and that's absolutely relevant

And he was way closer to the Stolls than he was Chris but targeted him,the mestizo boy,even though Travis and Connor would've been easier to get to join him.The first camper he killed was Beckendorf and he gaslight Silena into thinking he wouldn't only for Beckendorf to be have been only a tool to him.He had zero respect for Ethan,the japanese/wasian boy,and unless you count Alabaster from the side books,the named Titan's Army's male members were all boys of color.The named girls were the lil white girl he hit on to fuck it up for everyone and the ambigiously aged but young looking black girl he made his bedmate because he saw her as a sexual being unlike her.Everybody likes saying he was so obsessed with Percy because he was in love with Percy and use it as ship fuel but the real concrete subtext is that he only saw Percy as an equal because they were both intended as white men.This is really the only logical explanation as really,the guy you knew for not even three months over your years long companions??????Who just so 'happen' to be girls.Luke was NOT slick!!

The Titan's Army is a military by definition.It's an army,the members are soldiers,they were created for the The Second Titan War.A war Luke started over personal trauma for vengeance and openly stated he dosen't care if he hurts anyone(see his Good Kid Reprise)for his own goals and functions on a cryptofash ideal('destroying society to built it from the ground up' and see his Good Reprise again but the last three lyrics specifically).Luke believes himself superior to everyone because he 'sees the truth' but perpetuates the cycle of abuse with it and does nothing to fix society,help the people he's the 'Champion' for or even to depower the high authority.He kisses up to an EVEN HIGHER and also WORSE authority to get power for HIMSELF!He wants to be a gods stand-in,not their opposite and that's why he treated everyone like shit.His speeches?That was propaganda on his part,not radicalization.'Western civilization is a disase'says the cishet physically abled blue eyed blonde white man who's constantly described as traditionally attractive after he groomed a HUGE chunk of troubled kids i.e minority kids who get abused for it no matter how hard they try to be good,because THAT'S what Percy meant when he said he was a troubled kid in The Lightning Thief-it's an insult and he was reclaiming it as a lower class audhd survivor of multiple kinds of abuse.He truly believed he was 'not like other half-bloods' and that everything he did was a means to an end when he meant to end it all for everyone,not be a saviour

As a biracial afrolatina who has multiple neurodivergent disorders including autism and with bpd and ptsd,is transgender and gendernonforming and was raised by the VERY white side of his family,i'm genuinely impressed with how good of commentary Luke works as on white supremacy and accompanying bigotries-Yes,misogyny like i said but also ableism/eugenics with his hurtful words directed at Tyson who's implied to have Down Syndrome and if memory serves i'm pretty he took a dig at Grover's crutches and possibly even Hephaestus' own physical disability and i'm not exactly sure if i'd say that includes queerphobia on his part but he is a VIOLENTLY cisheterosexual character in his actions so the subtext is pretty obviously there.As discussed by tons of other lgbt Pjo bloggers,Silena and Clarisse are an Achilles and Patroclus parallel and Thalia fits the bill for MANY transfem and alt lesbians norms and a more niche reading is Percy as an accidental transfem narrative that actually holds a lot of water with the most blatant one being her proving to Zoe she's not a normal man at all,which is a constant trait of hers but it was made it a plot point in The Titan's Curse and Annabeth as a comphet butch lesbian thanks to how gay her and Clarisse,Piper and Reyna interact with eachother and while i don't ship Percabeth,transfem Percy and lesbian Annabeth are complimentary in evidence for obvious reasons(even if YOU don't ship Percabeth either!)

Luke Castellan is real.Luke CastellanS are real.The word for them is 'colonizers'.I love how he's written and potrays the ugly truth of whiteness as an intentionally perpetuated structure,not 'the natural order',and i hate how Rick in his own cishet physically abled white maleness couldn't stop being a pussy and let Percy be the anarchist revolutionary to his full potential he deserved to be.Not surprised considering this is the same who disrespects greek culture so hard and has from the start in addition to the very long list of everything else but i'm allowed to still be dissapointed and wish Pjo had been thought up by an autistic black person since that's what Percy is realistically supposed to be so write what you know principal would've helped big time.Luke Castellan is sympathic and relatable if he's the only kind of person you think deserves sympathy and chances but not anyone else out of your own sheltered experiences

I don't know why AI chatbots are so addictive or easy to use. At this point, it's becoming apparent that I seem to find machines easier to talk to than other humans. Because the machine is controllable. The chatbots function on a nest, clear cut turn based schedule. You say something, it says something, you say something, it says something, etc. That's easier than talking with real people.

Also, it's less stressful. Talking to people in real life means risking judgment and disappointment and any number of other frightening things. The chatbots aren't really capable of that human element we call "unpredictability". And because they're predictable, they're not as stressful or something.

I don't get it either, but I go back to a line in Percy Jackson where Hephaestus said machines are easier to be around than humans. And I think he was onto something, at least to some degree. Machines can be easier to deal with.

I really don’t like memes where Zeus is portrayed as not ableist compared Hera, (maybe I’m overreacting since I’ve only seen two memes with Zeus berating Hera for throwing Hephaestus) bc there is a version of Hephaestus’s fall, told in book one of the Iliad no less, where it was Zeus who threw him of Mount Olympus and disabled him, and Zeus insults him bc of his disability in Lucian’s Dialogues and it was Hera who defended Hephaestus.

a/n: this is an anti-calypso account, so there is no mention of calypso or her relationship with leo in this.  all characters are aged up to 18+, this ended up smuttier than i intended and i am [not] sorry

Leo watches as you sit beside him, arms thrown out behind you to support you as your legs sprawled out in front of you with your head thrown back in peaceful bliss just enjoying the rare peacefulness and calm at Camp Half Blood. With the mid-July heat reaching soaring temperature, activities had been cancelled for the safety of the campers, it had only been a week earlier most of them ended up with heat stroke after a fully day of activities and Will had insisted it not happen again the infirmary was overrun with ill campers and he may have lost his mind in the chaos as there wasn’t enough well trained healer lefts in the Apollo cabin, yourself included as your gifts lay more on the side of archery and the arts. 

Which left the campers free to do what they wanted, most had opted to stay in the shade of their cabins or had enlisted the help of the Hecate cabin who were providing enchanted fans that would help campers stay cool. There were only really three cabins who were found out in heat, the Hephaestus cabin who was used to the heat from the armoury, the Poseidon cabin (which was only Percy at the minute as Tyson got called back down to their father armoury) who opted for staying in the water all day to avoid the scorching heat, and the Apollo cabin who were lounging about various parts of the camp enjoying the sunshine while they could. 

So while Leo was supposed to be working away in the armoury, or in bunker 9, you found a spot on the beach to relax the day away. Leo had seen you on his way to bunker 9 and just couldn’t help himself but join you for a little while, after all it had been a long time since the two of you were able to be alone with Chiron and Mr D really cracking down on two campers of the opposite sex being alone together after one of the Aphrodite kids and Ares kids were caught in a compromising position a few weeks before. 

While you could go to bunker 9 for a little privacy, you had been so busy this summer with teaching archery and taking care of the newest additions to the Apollo cabin, a sweet little 6 year old girl called Abigail, who had attached herself to your hip the moment she arrived at the start of summer, and Leo was busy working away in bunker 9 on his newest contraption or else he was deep in the armoury helping his siblings come up with new weapon ideas.

So you only really saw each other during lunch and dinner and the end of night sing-a-longs where you wrap yourself up in Leo’s arms and you tell each other about your day but it wasn’t enough. You missed him, missed his touch, his sweet words, and the way he lit your body up like a circuit board with just a single touch, and he missed you as well. Missed your sweet smile and angelic words, missed how your touch made him feel alive, as if every nerve in his body was designed to respond to your touch. So, of course he was going to relish in any moment alone with you that he could get, including right now. 

“You’re staring.” 

Your voice breaks Leo out of his trance, the teasing lilt and small smirk spreading on your lips causing him to roll his eyes affectionately while a smile spreads across his lips, he thought he was being sneaky as he came up beside you but of course you knew he was there you always seemed to know when he was around. “It’s hard not to mi corazon.” 

You look simply ethereal with your hair drawn back out of your face and the sun glistening off the light sheen of sweat that had gathered on your skin. How could you not? You were the child of the sun god himself and you were most certainly in your element with the summer rays shimmering against your exposed skin. 

You dip your head forward and turn to the side to look at Leo, eyes full of love and affection as they trail over your figure clad in a pair of shorts and your orange Camp Half Blood shirt which you had tied up with at the front with a hair tie to try and alleviate some of the discomfort caused by the heat while also exposing as much skin as you could to the sun. You let out a scoff at his words and roll your eyes at him, “I am sweating like a pig Leo, my hair is a frizzy mess because of the mixture of heat and humidity. I am a certified mess right now.”

“You are still the most beautiful person on this planet”

This time you snort at him, “Careful don’t let the Drew hear you, she’d have heart failure,” He just laughs as he reaches out to you and gently pushes you down onto the sand by your shoulder, following suit so he was hovering over you and placing his hands by your head to support himself as he leans down and places a gentle kiss to your lips. 

You melt into the kiss, your hands reaching up to wrap around Leo’s neck and tangle themselves through the little baby curls at the base of his neck. The kiss is soft and sweet at first, you’re just relishing the feeling of being in each others arms of being able to kiss each other without an audience around but it quickly turns a little more heated as you get greedy and tug on Leo’s curls. 

He groans at the motion, allowing you to slip your tongue into his mouth and deepen the kiss, absolutely desperate to have every little bit of himself he was willing to give in that moment. Leo indulges you, allowing you to swirl your tongue around his before he takes control and forces your tongue back into your mouth, opting to bite down on your lip which draws a soft whimper from your lips and electricity to course through your entire body to where you wanted Leo the most. 

Knowing what you want, Leo is quick to adjust himself so that now his knee was in between your legs pressing against you in the most delicious way. You whine at the contact, a small breathy moan leaving your lips that is doing nothing to calm the raging boner that Leo is now sporting, and Leo pulls back to chuckle against your lips, “My sweet little sunshine girl, already so desperate for me.” 

Leo words cause even more heat to spread through your body and you have to do everything in your power to stop yourself grinding against his knee, so instead to distract yourself you pull Leo back down to your lips and tangle your hands in his hair, giving a light tug every now and then that causes beautiful moans to slip through Leo’s lips. 

You were so greedy for Leo that you would have kept going and let him take you right there on the beach but the sound of voices causes the two of you to break apart before you can get too heated, some of which you recognise as being your siblings from the Apollo cabin (Will included) who seemed to have decided now was the perfect time for a quick swim. You let out a gentle ’fuck’, annoyed that they had interrupted your time with Leo, and Leo just chuckles as he takes a hand to gently run down your jawline so he could cup your check and press a quick peck against your lips before he stands up and offers you a hand, an enticing smirk on his face.

“What do you say we sneak off to bunker 9 sunshine? Hmm?” 

You’re quick to take his hand and he pulls you up into his chest, where you pull him down by his shirt for another quick kiss just before your siblings arrive at the beach, “That sounds absolutely perfect.” 

Leo is quick to start pulling you in the direction of bunker 9, offering a quick nod of his head to your siblings (apart from darling little Abigail who was spending the day with Lacy at the Aphrodite cabin) who are all giving you knowing looks and smirks with Will shouting after you to “make safe choices”, causing you to flip him off with a smile as Leo laughs.
