#but sing and gun were just out of this world as todd and black
stormyoceans · 2 years
Note
gun would have absolute insane chemistry with literally anyone they pair him with but still i would die for a prequel to not me, black and todd and whatever happened between them before they started trying to end each other (but not being able to) or any other show with sing and gun i'm never losing hope idec
every day i look into the mirror and tell myself i don't need or want a second season for any BL and every day i lie through my god dam teeth because i know full well that if they gave me any kind of not me related content i would forgive and forget and eat that shit up like a starving woman
just think about how good it would be to have a second season that's more focused on black!!!!! a second season that works both as a sequel AND a prequel, following black as he still fights every day against the corruption in their society because that's not something that ended with tawi's fall, except these days he's pretty much working alone, the gang going their separate ways after everything that happened. then something BAD happens, like idk, maybe that dude who threatened dan that one time gaining a lot of political power in the upcoming elections or something, and suddenly todd is out of the coma and sitting in black's apartment like nothing happened trying to convince black they need each other's help to stop that guy from actually getting elected. of course black refuses at first, but eventually they make a deal and black ends up bringing the gang back together, and while this happens we also get flashbacks of black and todd growing up - falling in love and falling apart - and also of black meeting everyone and forming the gang the first time around. there are just so many things we don't know about the past!!!!! and so many things the show left open!!!!! the potential is there!!!!!
and like.. im not so delusional as to think something like that will ever happen with not me, however im with you on this, they will literally have to pry the hope for a singgun BL from my cold dead hands!!!!!!! or whatever, if they don't want to do a BL im fine with a lakorn where they play a pairing (like guy and papang in p.s. i hate you but like.. with more focus on them), i will take ANYTHING!!!!!!! THE PEOPLE (you and me) WANT IT!!!!!!!!!!

1989 (Taylor’s version) songs as BL/GL Characters - Part 2
I know places - Palm and Nueng (Never let me go)
Tumblr media
‘Cause they got the cages, they got the boxes and guns
They are the hunters, we are the foxes and we run
Baby, I know places we won't be found and
They'll be chasing their tails trying to track us down
‘Cause I, I know places we can hide
[…] Just grab my hand and don't ever drop it, my love
Clean - Akk (The Eclipse)
Tumblr media
Hung my head as I lost the war
And the sky turned black like a perfect storm
Rain came pouring down
When I was drowning, that's when I could finally breathe
And by morning
Gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean
[…] The water filled my lungs, I screamed so loud
But no one heard a thing
Wonderland - Top and Mew (Only Friends)
Tumblr media
Didn't it all seem new and exciting?
I felt your arms twisting around me
I should've slept with one eye open at night
We found wonderland, you and I got lost in it
And we pretended it could last forever
[…] And life was never worse but never better
[…] So we went on our way, too in love to think straight
All alone, or so it seemed, but there were strangers watching
And whispers turned to talking
And talking turned to screams
[…] Didn't you calm my fears with with a Cheshire cat smile?
[…] It's all fun and games 'til somebody loses their mind
You’re in love - Nomoto and Kasuga (She loves to cook, and she loves to eat)
Tumblr media
'Cause you can hear in the silence
You can feel it on the way home
You can see it with the lights out
You are in love, true love
Morning, [her] place
Burnt toast, Sunday
You keep [her] shirt, [she] keeps [her] word
And for once, you let go of your fears and your ghosts
One step, not much, but it said enough
New Romantics - Not Me Gang (Not Me)
Tumblr media
We're so young, but we're on the road to ruin
We play dumb but we know exactly what we're doin'
[…] 'Cause baby, I could build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at me
And every day is like a battle, but every night with us is like a dream
[…] Baby, we're the new romantics
Come on, come along with me
Heartbreak is the national anthem, we sing it proudly
[…] The best people in life are free
[…] We need love, but all we want is danger
Slut! - Mhok and Day (Last Twilight)
Tumblr media
Got lovestruck, went straight to my head
Got lovesick, all over my bed, love to think you'll never forget
[… ] Adorned with smoke on my clothes, lovelorn and nobody knows, love thorns all over this rose
[…] The sticks and stones they throw froze mid-air
Everyone wants him, that was my crime, the wrong place at the right time
And I break down, then he's pullin' me in
In a world of boys, he's a gentleman
We'll pay the price, I guess
[...] Half asleep, taking your time in the tangerine, neon light, this luxury
You're not saying you're in love with me, but you're going to
Half awake, taking your chance, it's a big mistake
I said it might blow up in your pretty face
I'm not saying do it anyway, but you're going to
Say don’t go - Kim and Chay (Kinnporsche)
Tumblr media
Why'd you have to make me want you?
Why'd you have to give me nothin' back?
Why'd you have to make me love you?
I said, "I love you", you say nothin' back
Why'd you have to lead me on?
Why'd you have to twist the knife?
Walk away and leave me bleedin', bleedin'?
Why'd you whisper in the dark just to leave me in the night?
Now your silence has me screamin', screamin'
[…] I would stay forever if you say, "Don't go”
Now that we don’t talk - Todd and Black (Not Me)
Tumblr media
Did you get anxious though on the way home?
I guess I'll never, ever know now that we don't talk
You grew your hair long, you got new icons
And from the outside, it looks like you're tryin' lives on
I miss the old ways, you didn't have to change
But I guess I don't have a say
Now that we don't talk
[…] I cannot be your friend, so I pay the price of what I lost and what it cost
[…] Truth is, I can't pretend it's platonic, it's just ended
Suburban Legends - Boston and Nick (Only Friends)
Tumblr media
You had people who called you on unmarked numbers in my peripheral vision
I let it slide like a hose on a slippery plastic summer, all was quickly forgiven
You were so magnetic, it was almost obnoxious, flush with the currency of cool
I was always turnin' out my empty pockets
And when it came to you, I didn't come here to make friends
We were born to be suburban legends
When you hold me, it holds me together
And you kiss me in a way that's gonna screw me up forever
Is it over now? - Sand and Ray (Only Friends)
Tumblr media
You dream of my mouth before it called you a lying traitor
You search in every maiden's bed for something greater
Baby, was it over when [he] laid down on your couch?
Was it over when he unbuttoned my blouse?
"Come here, " I whispered in your ear in your dream as you passed out, baby
Was it over then? And is it over now?

Not Me Episode 13 Review
That was a tough episode. Good, but tough. I tend to avoid media that's stressful in that way, so I can't say I entirely enjoyed it, but I deeply appreciate how meaningful it was.
Firstly, Dan's role in this episode was intense. He was very much stuck between a rock and a hard place. He could either watch the man he loved be murdered, or help arrest him. I was fascinated by the fact that the people in power knew that he was a painter. I mean, it's admittedly not surprising that they found out, given that he decided to have his studio right next to the police station with no lock and glass windows plastered with his art. But that nothing was done about it was quite interesting. It must have been so rough for Dan to learn about that, because the implication was that his art was meaningless, ultimately. I have nothing but sympathy for Dan, because he really didn't have any choice. Yet, when push came to shove, he helped them escape, knowing that the consequences for him would be extreme.
Yok's reaction was fucking heartbreaking though.
Black and Todd's interaction was beyond moving. Because I get where both of them are coming from. They represent the difference between top down change and bottom up change. They both want change, but don't agree about the way it should happen.
While it is true that people on top have more power individually than people on the bottom, the problem is that money and power corrupts. Even if someone has good intentions, amassing wealth literally changes the way you think:
But changing things from the bottom almost always results in a bloody revolution.
It's a rough conversation.
Aside from that, both Gun and Sing did an excellent job at showing just how heartbroken Black and Todd both were about the way their friendship had crumbled. I loved it.
I really enjoyed the casual intimacy between Sean and White. It was so nice to see White being entirely himself around Sean, down to his clothes and glasses.
I still don't care about Gram and Eugene's romance and wish she was with Namo. The scene Namo and Eugene had together was sadly brief, but they were everything I always wanted them to be. There will be another post dedicated to them.
Black coming in at the end and kicking ass to save the others was excellent. I have no idea how he knew where they were, but I don't even care right now because it was so satisfying. I guess Todd helped? Though I have no idea how Todd would know either.
Whatever.
I still loved it.
9.5/10, only because the GramEugene scene made me cringe so hard.

Untie Me
So ToddBlack have intrigued me since their first on-screen interaction. There's something twisted and interesting about their relationship, no doubt in huge thanks to Gun and Sing's chemistry.
So I found myself writing something a bit dark for them. A bit fucked up and a bit sad. There was more to this, an actual beginning, but I don't see myself ever actually finishing it, so I at least wanted to post what I actually sort of liked.
TWs: smut, restraints, dubious consent (at best), angst
Finally, Black slowly started to sink down onto his cock, almost closing his eyes in bliss, as it filled him. But he wanted to see this, wanted to catch every detail. Like the shiny drop of sweat slowly sliding down Todd’s forehead, over his cheek, gathering at his chin. Or the flush of his skin, starting at his chest and travelling right up to his cheekbones. It felt exhilarating. The power gave him almost the same shiver as the pleasure, he was feeling, as he slowly, oh so torturously slowly, started to move.
With a whine, Todd struggled against the restraints, but the rope held strong. His eyes were glazed over, as he bit his lip almost bloody, hands tensed into fists. “Black.” His voice sounded rough, the name falling from his lips repeatedly like a mantra. “Kiss me.” Almost reduced to a moaning mess, tears pooling at his eyes, Todd’s voice, as he spoke, was barely understandable. “Please, kiss me.”
Black, who had calculatingly remained as quiet as possible, let a shuddering sigh leave his lips. “No.”
“Black.” As the first tear escaped Todd’s eyes, Black leaned forward and licked it off, his lips oh so close to fulfilling Todd’s wish. But he didn’t kiss him. “Black, please.”
“Sssh.” Picking up the pace slightly, Black revelled in the slight hitch of breath it earned him. “Is this what you wanted?” He asked, voice almost cruel. “Me in your lap, me on your cock, while you rule the world.”
Todd’s eyes squeezed shut as he tried to hide his face in his arm, but he wasn’t quite quick enough to hide more tears escaping. Neither was he able to hide the moan that left him during a particularly quick thrust downwards. “I…”
“You what?” Using fingers on his chin to force Todd’s face upwards again, Black moved his mouth close to Todd’s ear. “How does it feel?” The question sounded vicious, as his teeth clamped down around the lobe. “Is it just like you imagined?” With a shudder, he squeezed around the dick and Todd let out a choked gasp. “Does this feel right to you?”
“Please.” Voice broken on a choked moan, Todd tried to thrust upwards, but Black pinned him down with his weight, changing to shallow quick thrusts that felt just on the right side of too much. “I don’t-” Another moan interrupted him and Todd tried to choke it down with a curse. “Black.”
Black huffed against him, moving his teeth down to Todd’s neck, his nails trailing down his chest, leaving faint red lines on their path. “Is that all you can say? My name?” He left a trail of bites down Todd’s throat and chest, reverting to the slow deep movements he started with. “Where is your power now, Todd? Are you feeling in control?”
Another whine and the bed frame creaked as Todd struggled harder against the rope. “Doesn’t-” His breath hitched again when Black’s nails trailed over a nipple. “Doesn’t matter, I just- fuck- I just want-”
“Want what?” Leaning back, Black looked at the teary mess of his face, looked at the blotchy lines on his chest, the sweat in his hair.
When Todd opened his eyes, they looked almost delirious, nearly insane. “I just want to touch you, please. Please, Black, let me touch you.” His wrists were chafed red beneath the rope, but he barely felt the pain anymore. “I just want to touch you.”
He was close, Black could tell. Messy, as he looked, he was still handsome and if Black were a better man, a more honest one, he would recognize the pain in his heart while looking at him, as what it was. “No,” he said instead of entertaining that line of thought, voice hard and unyielding. “No.” With a quick movement, he let Todd’s cock slip out of him and grabbed both his own cock and Todd’s in a tight grip. There was nothing passionate about the fast way he jerked them both off, nothing personal. Precise movements brought them both to the brink, with Todd coming first, white droplets painting his tensed stomach. Black’s name left his lips, broken and exhausted and his cock jerked painfully when Black’s own cum mingled there as Black came with a curse.
Black hesitated only for a moment, his eyes moving from the mess on Todd’s stomach to the mess on his face. He almost raised his clean hand to wipe away some of the tears still leaking down Todd’s cheeks. Almost.
Instead, he dragged himself upwards and started to dress. Todd remained quiet now, slumped into himself, his breathing deep but too measured to be asleep. He was watching Black, his eyes hooded and faintly red. And Black nearly left him like this, for his staff to find him, but he turned at the last second and grabbed the knife he knew was in Todd’s bedside table. He only cut one hand free, placing the knife into it, using his own fingers to tighten Todd’s weak ones around the handle.
It fell back against the blanket, though, as Todd quickly grabbed Black’s wrist. He nearly stumbled onto the bed, eyes widening slightly when he was brought close to Todd’s face. His former friend looked desperate, eyes wide and almost scared. “I love you,” he whispered, his voice raw and pained. “You have to know that I love you, Black.”
And Black did know. Had known for a while. But that had only made the betrayal hurt even worse. “Yeah,” he slowly said. With a sigh, he wrenched his hand away and straightened up. “But not as much as you love power.” His last words remained a whisper as he felt his own tear slide down his cheek. Raising a hand to quickly wipe it away, he turned and left.
He didn’t miss the angry yell from the bedroom. He entered the elevator, leaned against the furthest wall and closed his eyes.
He had a mission to get to. And Todd wouldn't be in his way, any longer.

This was a first draft to Protect Our Own, from my Code Bat series on Ao3! It’s a reimagining of Jason Todd breaking into Titans tower, in a world where Robin is a myth and Tim Drake goes by Alvin, unnamed vigilante, with the Titans. Enjoy!
Shit. Jason was screwed.
Even as he held the tablet in his hands, watching the very concerning stalker-level footage that the League had gathered, he knew. He knew without a doubt that he was watching the new Robin. The target chosen for him was, of all the options the world could give him, Robin.
“This boy is a member of a group of young superheroes known as Young Justice. They recently went under the mentorship of older superheroes, to become the newest team of Teen Titans,” Talia Al Ghul explained passively, and Jason did not like the gleam in her eyes as she watched the young boy fight, “Lady Shiva met the boy, once, and agreed to train him. Even she is unaware of who his previous mentors were.”
Thank goodness for small mercies.
Then Talia turned to Jason. “You have done an admirable job of controlling your Pit Madness,” she smiled sharply, and Jason was reminded of all the deaths he had caused, all the people who had taught him and were murdered by him, using their own tactics, “And you have learnt fast. As promised, you will complete one contracted kill, and you will be released to exact your own revenge.”
Jason gave himself a mental pat on the shoulder, because even in the early days of crazed anger, not once had he given proper clues towards the fact that his killer - the one he wanted to exact his revenge upon - was the Joker himself. “White-faced asshole” could just be a white man, and “fucking green-haired piece of shit” could still just apply to anyone with green hair.
The Robin secret was still safe, surprisingly. Code Bat was still safe.
The assassin base was in the middle of nowhere, but there was still a little town nearby, with enough reception to surf the internet on a phone he had nicked from a particularly rich-looking traveller.
Talia did not control what he knew, the League did not control what he knew, so even while he learnt of the Joker still being alive, he also learnt about the helicopter crash, how Batman had purposefully fled empty-handed. Truthfully, he still wanted the Joker dead - but he recognised that there was a chance that no matter how many times they tried, the bastard would come back. He would rather not try than to get stuck in a never-ending loop, something that B- that Bruce must have realised.
There were other stories he found. Jason could not deny destroying several rooms in the base when he read the kid’s story. All the money in the world, and his very-much-alive parents could care less than Jason’s own barely-there mother had.
He had not known if the boy had taken up the mantle after him, but he was unsurprised at the confirmation in front of him. Robin was as much a part of the Wayne family as champagne, fancy suits and camera smiles.
“The boy is young, and already he is excelling in combat, research, and investigation. In a few years, he will be a real threat to the League. This is your final assignment. Kill the boy, and we will let you go.”
Well, fuck.
Jason carefully controlled his reaction, turning to meet Talia’s eye with his blue-green eyes. “You want me to kill a minor,” Jason spoke slowly, allowing his incredulity and a tinge of anger to slip into his voice.
“Either you take the job, or you will continue training, until another opportunity arises,” Talia replied evenly. Which meant anything from a week later to never.
Jason gritted his teeth, sucked in a deep breath, and pushed it all out at once. “When are we leaving?” he questioned. Talia’s grin was sharp, like a predator before their strike.
-
Double shit. This just got way more complicated.
Jason had bargained with Talia for a week of preparation work - a week to scout out the Titans tower, as if he had not memorised the layout of the old one. As if they had not built the new tower in the exact way as the old one had been.
“We will have League members surrounding the building,” Talia announced, a day after they had landed in the city. Jason raised an eyebrow at her.
“We are curious as to who has trained this boy,” Talia explained, “Subdue the boy’s teammates, and make him vulnerable. Don’t block radio transmissions. If the boy has maintained contact with his mentor, they would come running at their call.”
Jason cursed inwardly, keeping his face carefully blank as he nodded his assent.
He had to play this right.
-
“I don’t trust this,” Bruce rumbled for the fourth time, in full Batman mode despite being in a casual sweater and sweatpants.
Dick hummed along, casting a concerned glance Tim’s way.
On the table was a note, delivered through an unassuming envelope.
It stated a date and specific hour, and, Don’t call the Code.
“The code,” Tim mumbled, “Like, Code Bat? There’s no way they’d know that, though, right?”
The note was written on red paper, flecked with green and yellow. Tim’s tone was wavering, lacking its usual confidence. He was always so sure when it came to cases, but this?
“What’s happening at this time?” Dick wondered. Bruce pulled up his own schedule for the following week, and Tim mentally went through his own plans. Nothing of note, but-
“I’ll be in Titans tower,” Tim stated aloud, and there were gears turning in his brain. Wild gears that were nearly off their hinges, but they were the same gears that had made the Batman-is-Bruce-Wayne connection, and he had learnt to trust them.
“Is someone trying to warn us?” Tim voiced, “I get a lot of speculation from the public, about what my official superhero name is, but also where I came from, who I trained with. What if it’s not just the internet wondering?”
Bruce pursed his lips in thought. He turned to Tim, his eyes hard and determined in that certain manner that meant he was being overprotective.
“No,” Tim blurted, “I’m not staying at the Manor during that specific timeframe.” Bruce shut his mouth and blinked down at his adopted son.
“Whoever this is, they risk being found out if I don’t show up,” Tim gestured to the note, “It might just escalate from there, anyway, if we prolong whatever is supposed to happen.”
“It could be a trap,” Dick pointed out, and now he too had taken up the overprotective undertones of discomfort. Tim squared his shoulders and smiled reassuringly. “I’ll be fine,” he promised, “I’ll stay in the tower. Besides, all my teammates will be there. If anything happens, they’re right there.”
Bruce and Dick exchanged worried glances, but eventually Bruce sighed and clasped a hand on Tim’s shoulder. “Code Bat has always been for your safety,” Bruce stated firmly, “I don’t care if our enemies find out about us - if it gets out of hand, if it looks like a trap, call us.”
-
The morning of the date stated on the note, Tim found another one in his Teen Titans bedroom.
They want you dead. Play along.
What jolted Tim was the symbol at the bottom right corner of the note - it was one of the made-up symbols that Dick had taught him. The symbol on the note meant “burn after reading”.
The handwriting was not Dick’s, nor was it Bruce’s. It was cursive, almost like Alfred’s, but it was also much more scrawled and uneven, like someone still unpractised in writing.
The gears in Tim’s brain must have really come unhinged this time, because the only name it could conjure was Jason. Jason was dead.
Tim was quietly uptight right until the hour came. He almost did not realise his teammates were being picked off, meticulously, skillfully, one by one. Almost.
Tim still had yet to press his emergency beacon. He had not activated Code Bat. He wanted to see where this went, before anything else.
Then the mysterious attacker descended on him, a blur of black and the smallest glimpse of white, and Tim was fighting for his life.
The man moved like an assassin - Tim had met some League of Assassins members, back when he had trained with Lady Shiva. He moved like them, but there was also something else to his movements.
Tim dodged a hit, and that was too short to be aiming for his throat, that would have been a non-lethal hit-
The man was not aiming to kill. He fought like Batman. He fought like one of them.
Tim opened his mouth, made to say something, although he was unsure what. He was swept off his feet before he got the chance.
“Who trained you, kid?” the voice growled, and it was a deep voice that should have unnerved him, but something struck him as familiar. The drawl, the barely-there accent.
Jason, his brain screamed.
Real answers, please, Tim pleaded.
The man pulled him by his tunic collar, and he shifted to pull him towards his face. There was a glint of metal on the man’s uniform - a recording device.
“Who are you?” he growled again, with Tim pulled close.
Tim got a good look at the man’s face, and while he instinctively bantered back, he was internally reeling. Looks like his gears were working, after all.
“Just a kid with a dream,” Tim smirked, a crooked smile already leaking some blood.
Jason - because this man was Jason, somehow, how was Jason alive - interrogated Tim while punching him out. His blows hurt for sure, but Tim swore that he was aiming for the areas that would cause the least injuries. He swore that when he grunted as a rib was broken, Jason had paused minutely, cringing slightly, before he barreled on.
Something was placed on his chest.
“Say goodnight, kid,” Jason sing-songed, and there was the sound of a gun cocking. Tim barely registered that when the gun shot, it had shot at him. There was the hard thump of something near his chest, just above his chest, but it had barely touched his tunic.
Jason tapped a finger-signal, a “stay low and don’t move”, and Tim remained where he was. He waited as footsteps receded, waited for several minutes, with a bag of fake blood leaking from his chest, bruises and other injuries blooming in pain underneath his uniform.
He felt rather than heard the presence appear beside him. The looming figure crouched down and gingerly maneuvered Tim into a firm grasp.
His “assassin” stared down at him. He had switched out his black assassin get-up for casual clothing. He was… tall. Built like Bruce. His eyes were different, too, and he had a white lock of hair curling just above his eyebrows. Yet…
“Jason?” Tim croaked out, and Jason Todd smirked. Tim knew that smirk - Robin wore it a lot, when he watched him. “You better be damn glad no one can hear you, anymore,” Jason gruffed, and started moving with Tim in his grasp, “Let’s go somewhere else, though, for good measure.”
They ended up in Tim’s room - sound-proofed, and therefore the safest location in the tower for this conversation.
“You’re alive,” Tim blurted out, as Jason dressed his wounds. His hands stuttered before resuming their work. “I died,” Jason stated flatly, “And I dug myself out of my own grave. Talia found me, and threw me into a Lazarus Pit.”
Jason raised his eyes to meet Tim’s, and Tim could see the eerie green glow in his eyes.
“Don’t tell Bruce about me,” Jason rushed out, and Tim immediately jumped to object, but Jason was faster, “Don’t. Listen, I-” Jason breathed deeply, “I’ve killed, alright? I’ve broken his big rule and all that jazz. I might still find myself going back to the streets of Gotham, but to the Manor? I’m not ready to face that shit.”
Jason paused for real this time, having finished taking care of Tim’s more visible injuries. He cringed.
“You should get Alfie to check you out, just in case you have internal bleeding or whatever the fuck I gave you,” Jason waved his hand around uselessly, “Lie low for a few days, alright? I need to make myself scarce. They’ll find out I didn’t follow through with the deal, and I’ll need to have disappeared, by then.”
Tim was silent for a few long moments. “Will I see you again?” Tim finally asked, his eyes wide and hopeful, “They miss you, you know? We miss you. We all do.”
Jason swallowed, and blinked back the water gathering in his eyes. “How can you miss me?” he chose to ask, “S’not like you knew me very well, before… well, before.”
Tim grinned, bright and eager.
“You once snuck out for patrol on your own,” Tim informed him, “And got stuck on a rooftop that you flipped onto with your grappling hook, because the other buildings around you were all too far away to grapple towards. You had to slide down the water pipes and run across an empty street to make your way back home.”
Jason sputtered, because that had happened, he did remember that, but when the heck did he hear about it?
“How the hell do you know that?” Jason asked, unable to keep his dismay from leaking into his voice.
“I’ll tell you when I next see you,” Tim smiled cheekily. Smartass.
Jason checked the time. “Your Superboy buddy will be waking up soon,” Jason reported, “Don’t come looking for me, alright? I’ll… I’ll return to Gotham soon. I just have to make sure the League’s off my back.”
Jason got up and hesitated. “When I return to Gotham,” he warned, “I’ll come in guns blazing. There’ll be deaths. It won’t be pretty. Just- just stay out of my way.”
It would have been more convincing, if Jason had not spent the last thirty minutes treating Tim’s wounds.
“Who are you?” Tim called abruptly, Jason hovering at the door, “You come in and take us all out, one by one. They’d want a name. Who are you?”
Jason smirked sharply.
“Red Hood,” he droned, “Call me Red Hood.”
He slinked away, and like a true Bat, was out of the tower in seconds.

hi!! i was wondering if you could do a matchup/ship for me? some things about me is that i have short, curly brown hair and blue-green eyes, i’m not sure if appearance has anything to do with it but i thought i’d add it in! i’m pretty sarcastic around my closest friends and generally good at making new ones, even though i get a bit anxious at big gatherings like dances and parties. i stick to a close group of friends, like 99% of the time. i’m also an avid theatre kid lmao—i’ve been singing and acting for over a decade. i write a lot. like, i have twenty seven half-finished book drafts and a million poems in my notes app. i make super super extensive playlists in which every single song has a specific reason for being on the playlist. i also work at a coffee shop and have an addiction to caffeine! i’m a maladaptive daydreamer, so i’ll literally spend hours daydreaming about being in my favorite movie/book/tv worlds and romanticizing relationships with my favorite characters (i’m bi, so there’s a big playing field in this lol). i have legit zero volume control at times and i’m an empath (like, too much empathy at times that it makes me physically incapable of doing anything). i read a lot and i like to annotate/highlight my books. i write on my hands a lot (i have a million markers and pens it’s insane) but i’m t e r r i b l e at drawing. i do lots of peace signs and finger guns when i don’t know what to say or just at random times so i don’t have to continue conversations lol. i don’t know if this affects anything, but my favorite dead poet is definitely todd—i relate to his anxiety but i love seeing his character grow and make friends and become more confident throughout the course of the movie! he’s so sweet i love him so much. AH that was a lot of information that you probably didn’t need, but i really appreciate you confusing these ships!! i honestly love them so much, they make me smile like crazy. thanks love <3333
thank you so, so much for sharing all these details about yourself !! i relate to a lot of what you said, so writing this was very fun for me. i really hope you like it and thank you for the inspiration <3(:
ship:
shipping you with charlie, but you’d most definitely be best friends with todd ((:
hcs:
charlie would absolutely thrive off of your sarcasm. you guys would definitely have a lot of tension, but like… the good kind ? like it’d just be very flirty between you two almost immediately lol
hanging out with todd at big functions (prom, ball, concerts, etc.); you guys would find a corner that would be mostly quiet and just try very hard to disappear into your own worlds while this big event was going on
staying up for HOURS just writing with todd and bouncing ideas off each other, charlie begging you guys to just quit for the night and for you to come to bed, but you guys would be completely stuck on writing your hearts out
charlie surprising you at work where you’d make him his favorite drink (plain, black coffee)
gifting charlie a cd/mixtape with a playlist you made just for him, with extensive descriptions about what each song means (he would absolutely love this– the amount of attention you paid to him would make him absolutely thrilled)
you and charlie would have absolutely CHAOS-FILLED nights with lots of yelling and screaming song lyrics at the top of your lungs, laughing, and just being agents of chaos/mischief
you’d be one of the only people that todd trusts to help him when he’s not feeling his best. your way of being there for him was one of his favorite things and he appreciated it endlessly (‘:
running lines with neil, where he’d love to pick up on your techniques bc you’ve been acting for so long and he really admires that
charlie would like to read books after you had finished with them bc he liked reading your little annotations and stuff
you’d take to drawing on charlie’s hands, and he would find it so cute. he’d return the favor as well
charlie’s family would probably like how happy you make charlie (: you’d bring out this whole new side of him. like a side that was still all goofy, but also empathetic and deeply caring
blurb:
Tumblr media
you and charlie would have a really fun first date; he’d take you bowling (where you both would do pretty terribly, but the music and the jokes you two would crack made it completely worth it), and then to have dinner at one of those 60s diners. he’d give you quarters to pick music on the jukebox and insist on dancing in the middle of the floor with you, even though you were a bit nervous/embarrassed by it at first. when you got home from your date, you’d write about it, sharing it with todd, who thought you and charlie were very cute together (‘: he’d mention to charlie that you had written something about him and plead you to read it to him. when you finally caved (bc who could say no to charlie dalton??) and read it, he’d sit there completely enamored with you and the way you could wield words to your advantage. hearing the way you described him and how much you cared for him would make him fall that much harder for you. and he would look so forward to future nights where you two could be your rambunctious selves with one another.

However, the reader has been going by a pseudonym. How long will it be until they give in to the urge to outs themselves and potentially be put at risk?
Warnings: cursing. Some angst and thriller.
Tumblr media
The burner phone wedged between your ear and shoulder rang as you waited for your friend to pick up. Acrid odors greeted your nostrils as you stepped off the subway, piss most likely. You were still surprised that cell phone coverage had extended even this far down. Gotham just didn’t seem to be the type of place to have tech in their subway stations. At all.
Paranoia slowly sunk it’s claws into you as you glanced around. You pulled the bill of your cap down further. You tried to seem as grounded and not, well,  scared as you were. Stay invisible.
“Hey,” the gentle voice of your friend greeted as he picked up, pushing your anxieties aside just a bit. “I take it you just got off the subway?”
“Yeah... at 14th,” you responded quietly.
“Okay, head south,” he paused. “You still have the address?” You responded affirmatively. “Good, keys under the mat. Shitty hiding spot I know but it’s only been there like an hour.” He attempted to lighten the mood and you appreciated it, a small smile lighting face.
“Remember to avoid cameras! ATMs have them so I had the bank send a second credit card to the apartment. They’ll think I’m on a business trip to Gotham so no problems there.”
“I’ll pay you back I-“
He scoffed. “None of that. I’m a fucking lawyer working for the biggest firm in America. I think I can take on some financial burden to protect my best friend.” The emphasis on the word ‘burden’ made your lips twitched into a small smile. Sarcastic bastard. A beat of silence passed as you ascended the stairs. It had been so long since you had been to this city and you paused to look around. The promise of impending fall lingered in the air as you noted a slight chill go through your body. Good, you thought, more layers would be easier to hid in.
“I-” you cut yourself off with a sigh, knowing how stubborn he could be. “Thank you, Tom.”
You could tell from his chuckle that he was pleased. “Security at the building knows you’re staying in my apartment and won’t bother you. Be warned, there are cameras in the lobby but try not to seem suspicious, alright?”
“Did you give them my fake name?”
“Yeah...” you could hear him shuffling around a bit, his dog barking in the distance. “Make sure to check in frequently. Nick and I will look into our next options, alright?” You agreed. “Alright, gotta go. Love you, call me soon!”
“Love you too,” you mumbled while hanging up.
As you moved through the dreary city, you kept your head down and simply dodged any oncoming people. The dark towering buildings of Gotham caged you in but at the same time, gave you a little hope that you would be hidden within it’s shadows. The walk was short and easy, but unnerving. The hair on the back of your neck stood on end, it felt like eyes were on you at all times. You didn’t breath easily until you were in the comfort of Tom’s apartment.
Even though you were happy to be away from people, you still did a sweep of the apartment, making sure nothing was out of place and nothing was suspicious. You knew it was unlikely that anyone knew you were here or that it had been bugged, it helped easy your nerves just a little bit. The second thing you did was unpack your large duffle bag. Beyond clothing and necessities, all it really had was your official papers (id, passport, etc), a phone charger, and a pistol. You let out an uneven breath as you placed the weapon on the table. This is the safety lock. Be careful there is recoil with it. Arms like this, yeah. Nick’s words rang in your head, this was real. You were shocked by how heavy it was and still couldn’t see yourself using it even in self defense.
“Credit card,” you mumbled to yourself, breaking the spell of the glinting metal. You needed food and food required money so unfortunately that meant braving the world one more time. “Fuck.” With a sigh, you rubbed your hand over your face, tired and drained.
You grabbed the hat one more time, a common Gotham Knights baseball cap and fixed it to cover your face. The plain, baggy navy hoodie worked to obscure your figure. One more look over confirmed that you looked like an everyday Gothamite. Deep breaths.
You avoided the elevator, less chance of being on camera, bonus: less people. The card was in the mail, just like promised and you headed once more out to the streets.
About an hour later you were a block away from the apartment building, arms laden with bags. It was going fine, no one paid you attention (though the burning feeling of eyes on you persisted). A sharp hit to your shoulder sent your bags flying, eliciting curses from you, directed at the man that bumped you. He looked at you, surprised as though you had materialized out of nowhere.
“Seriously dude?”
“Shit, sorry,” his voice was rough. He shoved a hand through his black hair a shock of white in the front, looking flustered. You gave him a roll of your eyes but mumbled something along the lines of ‘yeah it’s fine.’
He awkwardly helped you gather the strewn groceries. Had your anxieties not been going haywire, you would have noted that he was attractive with blue eyes, and a tall, muscular body. When you had all your bags back, you walked away, ignoring the fact that he looked like he wanted to say something else.
Back in the apartment you kept yourself together long enough to put away the groceries. By then you were too tired to cook and the anxiety had left you with no hunger.
You paced in the living room, which was an open concept with the kitchen, giving you a direct eye line to the daunting gun on the table. By the time your feet were tired, you were able to at least sit down and realize pacing solved nothing. Unfortunately. You decided another sweep of the apartment may help though, so thats what you did.
After debating it for far too long, you took the gun into the bedroom and placed it in the nightstand. The bedroom was typical with white walls and nice furniture. The comfortable looking sky blue duvet was no surprise. Suddenly you were appreciative of Tom’s taste for the finer things. The apartment overall was very nice and you couldn’t fault it. Thankfully he was also concerned with security, you mused. Your nightly routine was short and you quickly got into bed before you could get yourself stuck in another loop of bad coping mechanisms. Maybe something else would help you relax, the tense muscles of your shoulders beginning to ache.
You picked up the book on the opposite nightstand and began to read. The words ran together and you couldn’t untangle them, causing you to re-read the same paragraph over and over. Then you attempted to meditate. All you saw was red and yellow and orange. You glanced to the nightstand where his white noise machine sat. When in Rome... Almost immediately you regretted that decision as the noise simply overwhelmed you.
After a few minutes of sitting in silence, the room dark, your eyes felt heavy, but your anxieties spiked. You tried to sleep anyway. Eventually, the world faded away and you slept. It was not restful.
You hummed as you stirred the ingredients in a bowl. A song played that you kind of knew - not enough to sing but enough to sway your hips. Your apartment was cozy and exactly how you wanted it. Intense eyes stared at you from the window of your apartment, you could feel his fiery gaze.
Burning. Burning. Burning.
The bowl slipped from your hands, flames rose from the stove, the oven roared to life.
“Mine.” His voice melded with the sound of the flames. “You are mine. Do not run from me.”
As the flames spread around you and your apartment fell away, he rose before you. Intimidating figure cut from stone, eyes of fire, hair of gold. The god he thought himself to be, brought to life.
Breathe.
The roar and crackle of the fire intensified until it was so loud you had to clamp your hands over your ears. The god’s lips move, smiling as he does. The words his lips formed repeated. Over and over. Over and over.
Slowly, you removed your hands to be met by not a roar but deafening silence. You couldn’t hear the god. Now, you could read his lips, “I will find you. Do not worry. I am coming. I love you.”
Breathe, fucking breathe.

Detroit Become Human Meme:
How long have you been in the fandom?
I played the game for the first time in December of 2018. I started this blog and my main fanfic series January 2019. I have been DBH crazy ever since and haven't looked back.
How did you find out about DBH?
I had seen a few pieces of fanart floating around, but it didn't stay in my brain. I didn't understand what it was. Then, a preview showed up on my Youtube feed. It was the scene of Kara and Alice escaping from Todd's house. I was already a big robot nerd and I knew I had to play it. I didn't even own a PS4. I bought the game on Black Friday without having purchased the consul yet.
Have you played the game, or only watched a play-through?
I went out and bought me a PS4 with the soul purpose of playing this game.
What is it about DBH that brought you into the fandom?
I came for the androids. I stayed for the characters. And I am absolutely fascinated with human/android relationship dynamics. I want to explore that all day long. Also being homicide detectives investigating android/human murders. I would love to see more of that in a sequel.
Favorite chapter, part, or scene of the game.
Oh man, this is hard. So many. I love all the parts in the Zen Garden. I just love that setting. I like the scene where Hank and Connor are out by the park discussing life and androids and Hank pulls out the gun. It's a great scene, no matter how it ends. I like the Jericrew singing their “Hold on just a little while longer” I never get tired of watching that. Playing the chapter in Zlatko's house is crazy fun and so eerie.
Favorite of the main 3.
Of course Connor, but I also have love for Markus and Kara.
Favorite character(s) not part of the main 3.
There are a lot of characters to love. Amanda is fascinating. Simon's clear baggage but lack of a backstory is intriguing. Lucy has such a cool character design and is very interesting. RK900, cuz you all know why we need that in our lives.
If you were in the DBH world, would you be human or android?
I would be a human quietly thirsting over an oblivious android. And then I would probably die alone because I would be too chicken to say anything. LOL
Favorite ships?
(I am open to a lot of pairing possibilities that no one writes about.) Markus/North, Markus/North/Simon, North/Simon (These babies are just my OT3). I like GOOD Connor x human OC stories. More than I like reader fics. I like seeing a full character interact with him and Connor learning how to be in a relationship and fall in love. (I kinda get a little uncomfortable when reader fics address me directly. Leave me out of it please. I just want to watch lol)
I would also love to find some good Markus x human OC fics. Please send any my way if you find some really GOOD ones.
Crack pairings I'd love to see written: Markus/Lucy, Markus/Chloe, RK900/Chloe
Least favorite/most disliked ships?
I'm not a fan of any of the RK's hooking up with each other. (Unless there's an OC in the middle, then I might change my tune.) Markus/Connor, Connor/RK900, Connor/Sixty fics all make me uncomfortable. Though I don't think any less of those who do like those pairings. (Markus/Connor is always all over my dash. I live with it.)
If you have fan works, where can I find them?
I post pretty much every piece of DBH writing on here first. Most of that then makes it to my AO3 Account
Recommend a DBH fic written by someone else.
“The Uncanny Valley” by AlleycatAngst.
It is a Gavin-centric fic. Not necessarily the main character I was looking for. But it is also a detective story. Its well written with twists and turns, and the author seems to have an understand of how being an officer and detective actually work. I love me a good homicide detective story with androids. I wish there were more fics like this out there.

i just relistened to doctor horrible’s sing along blog and got inspired so. dghda superhero/supervillain au where todd is an up and coming hero vigilante and dirk is the world’s worst villain
now hear me out
okay so dirk’s life is actually very depressing, as per usual. unfortunately, he was adopted by riggins as a child along with other children and trained and brought up to be villains for his supervillain team, Project Blackwing. fortunately, nearly all of the children are terrible at being villains. bart was trained to be a killing machine, but she only ever seems to kill bad guys. the rowdy 3 were trained to be robbers and chaos makers, but they always do robin hood-esque deeds of good. mona is a shapeshifter and riggins makes her transform into giant monsters to attack the city, but usually all she does is curl up on the roads as a giant rabbit and cause traffic. francis didnt like being a villain so when he was ten he just fucked off into an alternate dimension of his creation. dirk was....
dirk didnt have any immediately noticeable powers, but riggins noticed his propensity to see the innerworkings of the universe. he had no idea how to weaponize that though, so he just made dirk learn. learn a lot. dirk becomes the supervillain who makes wacky inventions and ray guns and -inators ala dr. doofenshmirtz from phineas and ferb. riggins wants him to make some really deadly stuff, but dirk always says the universe wants him to make an -inator that makes frogs sing, this will set the universe right this week!!!!
riggins and dirk have a very bad bad relationship where riggins forces dirk to do a lot of things he doesnt want to do and dirk finds a way to do them but ducking under causing any real harm. really, all dirk is is an incredible nuisance, a big enough nuisance that he gets to save himself from riggins’ manipulation for a while. sometimes.
anyway, dirk is known by the city as Icarus (segue to talk about dirk’s supervillain outfit which is absolutely inspired by dr. horrible. colored coats and huge black gloves. dorky looking goggles that are on his face whenever hes out being a villain. he changes color of his coat every appearance) thanks to his first invention which was a pair of mechanical wings he made to help aid the Incubus and Marzanna rob a bank. he very famously fell out of the sky and into a dumpster while holding a gigantic bag of money because his wings failed. he got arrested, but like all of Project Blackwing, theyre easily out of jail in like 3 to 4 days tops, much to the irritation of Detective Farah Black.
speaking of! let’s check out our roster of heroes!!!!
farah is a cop by day but the magnificent Athena at night!! Athena is the city’s most popular and well known superhero. she has super strength and even if shes wearing a mask face mask and a visor, everybody just knows she is beautiful. she fights crime at night to make up for the fact that bad guys keep getting away at her job. she got her power from her last job, being the bodyguard of patrick spring, a retired superhero inventor. one of his experiments went wrong and blasted her with a ray that granted her super strength. okay half the reason i gave farah super strength is because i cannot stop thinking about farah effortlessly lifting a truck.
tina!!!! tina isnt a superhero but she comes from a family of empaths. she works alongside farah as a detective and the empath thing means she can basically tell when somebody is lying or not. tina thus knows that farah is athena and farah knows tina is an empath and tina thinks farah is the coolest thing EVER. tina wants to be farah’s sidekick SO BAAAAD but farah never lets her. tina follows her anyway when farah goes nightwatching as covert backup.
now todd and amanda are complicated. pararibulitis exists in this universe the same way it does in canon, todd lied about it, amanda got it, and hes been wracked with guilt ever since and says he’s been cured. it is a terrible terrible condition until both of them learn, independently, that it’s actually a power. nobody else in the family ever learned this. with enough practice, they can make whatever their hallucinations are real and direct them and lengthen them. getting electrocuted? congrats, you have electricity powers for 20 minutes. however, the downside is that it hurts until you control it. amanda also has cool seer powers, and her discovery of these powers leads her to going out more and meeting the rowdy 3 and realizing theyre pretty cool people!!!
meanwhile todd develops pararibulitis for real and realizes it’s a power and decides the Only Way to make amends for his sins is to become a vigilante superhero. it’s so todd. be a superhero by using a power that deliberately hurts him in the process. hoo boy.
ANYWAYYY. todd becomes a masked vigilante known as Spectrum, dubbed by the public because to an outsider’s perspective, it just look like todd has completely random powers (trending twitter hashtag #SpectrumsPowerOfTheDay. is it gonna be electricity? fire? making wasps appear out of nowhere? pulling knives from thin air?? WHO KNOWS!!!)
todd is SHIT at fighting with any finesse and soon meets Athena who begrudgingly teaches him the ropes. they both dont know their secret identities until todd gets hurt and farah has to drag him to his apartment.
ANYWAY MY WHOLE POINT WITH THIS AU IS THAT ICARUS AND SPECTRUM BECOME RIVALS. icarus is DELIGHTED with spectrum because athena isnt too big on fight banter, but spectrum is SO FUN TO RILE UP. please please please imagine icarus and spectrum just squabbling while fighting on top of a building that has icarus’s new useless ray gun, or something.
icarus and spectrum both become quite attached to each other, and if they werent on different sides, theyd consider each other friends!!! icarus uses a healing ray gun to heal spectrum’s wounds when he gets injured. spectrum protects icarus from a falling telephone pole. their fight banter slowly turns into thinly veiled flirting, and they both can feel the tension. because it is....a Lot.
meanwhile, todd in his normal life, suddenly meets dirk gently at a laundromat. he gets a crush on him immediately. dirk gets a crush on todd too. both of them have a crisis about having a crush on “two different people.”
okay okay im done

Top 10 Personal Favorite Hit Songs from 2009
Tumblr media
20 to 21 years old. And so the 2000s end, not with a whimper, but with an explosion of upbeat, great pop songs.
Only one third of these lists left to make!
Disclaimers:
Keep in mind I’m using both the year-end top 100 lists from the US and from France while making these top 10 things. There’s songs in English that charted in my country way higher than they did in their home countries, or even earlier or later, so that might get surprising at times.
Of course there will be stuff in French. We suck. I know. It’s my list. Deal with it.
My musical tastes have always been terrible and I’m not a critic, just a listener and an idiot.
I have sound to color synesthesia which justifies nothing but might explain why I have trouble describing some songs in other terms than visual ones.
First to second and final year of my Master degree in Contemporary History. Also got two summer jobs that year. I was basically only researching and writing my master thesis at this point and trying to survive on a 50€ per month budget to pay for transport, clothes, driving lessons, and food apart from one meal a day. Needless to say, some corners had to be cut and my health wasn’t the best. I was also trying to register to pass some concours d’Etat to be a government worker considering there was 0% chance I’d be able to find a job otherwise with my qualifications and my mother had been trying to find an excuse to throw me out for more than four years at this point. Basically I was broke, stressed out and in panic mode.
Thank god, the music was mostly energetic and upbeat on the radio. I can’t imagine what my mood would have been like if the charts had been as horribly depressed as in 2018 or 2019.
This was also the year when my favorite music reviewer ever, Todd In The Shadows, started to make his first videos, so you might think his lists are going to influence mine, but as it turns out we have very, very different tastes for the most part (I mean come on, the guy hates Depeche Mode), so... not so much. But he helped me discover a lot of songs I would have ignored otherwise, so yeah, godspeed, Todd.
It should be mentioned that the two songs that I wanted to put at the top of this list before looking at the actual year-end lists turned out to be non-elligible and that is extremely frustrating. Obviously, as I mentioned in the previous post, there’s Life In Technicolor II by Coldplay, which has an incredibly fitting name since it’s one of their most colorful songs ever. But I’m not even sure I would have put it at #1 since this was the year of Mika’s second album, and oh my god, We Are Golden was FANTASTIC. It’s my absolute favorite song from the guy, the music video is incredibly fun, and I listened to that shit on a loop as soon as it dropped.
I usually don’t put such large links for non-elligible songs but the fact this isn’t elligible is nothing short of criminal. Check it out if you’ve never heard it.
youtube
As for albums from bands I liked... eh. Lacuna Coil dropped Shallow Life, which was not as good as KarmaCode, Pet Shop Boys dropped Yes which wasn’t nearly as good as Fundamental, Depeche Mode dropped Sounds of the Universe which was DEFINITELY not as good as Playing the Angel (I liked Wrong, though. But it’s not elligible), Eminem released Relapse which was joyless and pretty bad and he was kinda dead to me at that point (even if it wasn’t as terrible as Encore AND he had that song with Drake that was very good), Placebo released Battle for the Sun which was pretty great but still not as good as their previous two albums, Paradise Lost had Faith Divides Us Faith Unites Us and basically same thing there, and Indochine had La République des Météors which is imho their worst record in the past twenty years, by far.
Long story short, every single one of the bands and artists I loved who released an album that year let me down (except Placebo, maybe).
And then VNV Nation released Of Faith, Power And Glory, I listened to it, and suddenly I had a new favorite band, and everything was good and beautiful in the world again. Album of the year for me, hands down.
Tumblr media
With that out of the way, a few honorable mentio-HOLY SHIT HOW MANY OF THESE ARE THERE, WTF
Replay (Iyaz) - A perfectly good and innocent little earworm.
Run This Town (Rihanna) - I don’t like the original very much (Kanye’s verse is atrocious) but I've had a mashup of it with Bach’s Tocatta & Fugue in D minor (yes you read that right) on my mp3 player for years now, so this has to count. The mashup is called Run This Town In D Minor. It’s one of my favorite mashups ever. I even made fanart of it once! Look it up if you can, the original video has apparently disappeared.
Circus (Britney Spears) - You know it’s a good year for pop when even Britney Spears makes music I like.
Magnificent (U2) - Wait, even U2 was making decent music? I had zero use for them since at that point Linkin Park had more or less taken over their ecological-musical niche of “mainstream epic-sounding pop-rock music with tortured vocals and Emotions(tm)” but that one was still kinda nice.
Même Pas Fatigué (Magic System & Khaled) - I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again but they always bring a smile to my face and I don’t get why it’s ‘cool’ to hate their songs in my country. Yeah, they often sound the same, but I’d listen to ten similar-sounding Magic System songs in a heartbeat whereas you’d have to pay me to listen to ten similar-sounding Nickelback songs.
Day n Nite (Kid Cudi) - This had a tendency to get stuck in my head, but not at all in an unpleasant way.
21 Guns (Green Day) - Much better than I remembered.
When Love Takes Over (David Guetta), Stereo Love (Edward Maya ft Vika Jigulina), Evacuate the Dancefloor (Cascada) - That year was full of catchy, stupid, energetic songs, wasn’t it?
Greenlight (John Legend) - If I had better taste, this would be on the list. Alas, you’re reading the top 10s of someone who once put Blue (Eiffel 65) in a #1 spot, so yeah.
In Your Hands (Charlie Winston) - Same thing, basically.
Like a Hobo (Charlie Winston) - “Like a hobo from a broken home, nothing’s gonna stop me”, said this very useful song. Now is a good time to remind you that my nickname at the public university was The Hobo. So yeah. I liked this song a lot and I still do.
Forever (Drake) - Drake and Eminem are both amazing on this track. Unfortunately there’s also Kanye West and Lil Wayne on it. But. Like. “I'm Hannibal Lecter so just in case you're thinking of saving face / You ain't gonna have no face to save”. Dude. Duuuuuude.
You Found Me & Never Say Never (The Fray) - Did I mention I really, really liked this band. I think I did. Several times.
Paparazzi & Love Game (Lady Gaga) - Would both have had a chance to land on the list without the incredible amount of great, catchy tunes that year had to offer.
C’est Dans l’Air (Mylène Farmer) - Mylène Farmer had THREE singles on the French year-end list and this is the ONLY one I like. Good electro, mediocre verses but a great chorus (and a weird and kind of hilarious music video). Basically a song saying we’re all going to die and she can only sing about it. It’s strange, it’s a bit dark in a fun way, but it’s sadly not enough to land on the list, and it was the last cut from it.
Phew. Making this list was like a Hunger Games of catchy, upbeat, stupid songs to find which one was the best. It’s not #1 but I’m still shocked I had to put it so high.
But first, the runner ups.
10 - Fire Burning (Sean Kingston)
US: #33 / FR: Not on the list
Tumblr media
Yes, ALL these honorable mentions were kicked out to give the last spot on the list to this guy and a chorus that goes “somebody call 911, shawty fire burning on the dance floor, WOAH!”.
The fact that I don’t feel bad about it means this was the right pick for that spot.
9 - Rain (Mika)
US: Not on the list / FR: #22
Tumblr media
Anybody else thinks Mika looks like the Fourth Doctor on this screenshot from the music video or is it just me?
Anyway. So yeah, as I said, We Are Golden would have topped this list if it had been elligible. Sadly, it isn’t, but Rain is. I don’t like it nearly as much as We Are Golden, but what can I say. It’s still Mika. I’ll take whatever I can.
8 - I Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas)
US: #4 / FR: #17
Tumblr media
I lost about 80% of the respect I had for this song the day I realised its untouchable, marvellous beat was very probably stolen from Take a Dive. I still love it though. Had a few actual parties in 2010 and early 2011 and this was garanteed to make everyone dance, even people like me who don’t know how to dance.
And then the dancefloor died instantly anytime anyone tried to put Boom Boom Pow on because it’s impossible to dance on that one. But that’s another story.
7 - Poker Face (Lady Gaga)
US: #2 / FR: #5
Tumblr media
Needless to say this was absolutely everywhere and overplayed to death and beyond, and the fact I still wanted to listen to it and put it on my playlists really tells you how good I thought it was (and still is).
6 - Ça m’énerve (Helmut Fritz)
US: Not on the list / FR: #1 (...yes.)
Tumblr media
This is a novelty song with a singer pretending to have a thick German accent, complaining about various things in France, like the fact he doesn’t fit the dress code for a club, that he wanted to buy a sweater with “Rock” written on it but it’s out of stock, that some girls can fit in a size 34 blue jean and not him, that there’s a queue of people trying to buy macarons at the Ladurée shop, and so on. And every time he concludes “that gets on my nerves”, said in a very flat tone. Here’s a translation.
It was overplayed as f█ck here. Think Despacito levels of overplay. But the beat is great and it’s still hysterical after having heard it about a hundred times that year.
Fun fact, while I was making this list and relistening to this song, my s.o said “haha that sounds great! What is it?” and I stared at him in disbelief. Somehow, he was completely serious. That’s like someone escaping the Great Macarena Onslaught Of 1996. What happened. How.
5 - Waking Up In Vegas (Katy Perry)
US: #36 / FR: Not on the list
Tumblr media
Again, I must remind you that my s.o is a Katy Perry fan and that I’ve heard this song even more than the average radio listener did at the time, and it’s STILL #5 on this list. What can I say. It’s a ton of fun and one of my favorite songs from her.
4 - New Divide (Linkin Park)
US: #61 / FR: Not on the list
Tumblr media
Is this their best song? Not by a f█cking mile. I thought it would be much lower when I started to make this specific list, but what can I say. Linkin Park is like that one old friend that you kept no contact with for years, and once you meet them again, it’s like they never left. Who cares if that wasn’t nearly as good as Numb or In the End? Not me, that’s for sure.
Also, “In every loss in every lie / In every truth that you deny / And each regret and each goodbye / Was a mistake too great to hide / And your voice was all I heard / That I get what I deserve”. Holy shit, dude.
3 - Good Girls Go Bad (Cobra Starship)
US: #43 / FR: Not on the list
Tumblr media
BEHOLD. THE ONLY SURVIVOR OF THE 2009 ‘CATCHY UPBEAT STUPID SONGS’ HUNGER GAMES. THE CATCHIEST, UPBEAT-IEST, STUPIDEST OF THEM ALL. HERE IT IS AT LAST.
The thing I love about this is that it’s a song made by nerds for nerds and that the singer looks and sounds completely non-threatening. As Todd said in his own list back in the day, “that guy couldn’t make good MILK go bad” and that’s what’s so endearing about the song, I think.
Also yes, this is, in fact, placed above Linkin Park.
2 - Use Somebody (Kings of Leon)
US: #14 / FR: Not on the list
Tumblr media
This was my #1 at first. I LOVED it. I even bought the album, even though, as you know, my funds were very low that year. That music is soaring. It’s majestic. Well, the lyrics aren’t that majestic and soaring, it’s about loving someone and trying to catch their attention, but the rest? Damn this is intense. It was also elligible for the 2010 list, by the way, where I ALSO wondered if it should be #1, but in both cases, it wasn’t meant to be.
And so this list of 2009 hit songs comes to a close.
It began with the forging of the Great 2009 Upbeat Songs. Three were given to the Punk Rock hits. Seven to the Dance Tracks. And nine, nine songs were gifted to the Radio Friendly Pop Songs, which above all else desired power.
But they were all deceived, for another song was made. Deep in the forgotten land of Synth Pop, in his Parents’ Basement, the Dark Lord Adam Young forged a master song, and into this song he poured his joy, his talent and his will to dominate all charts.
One song to rule them all.
1 - Fireflies (Owl City)
US: #60 / FR: Not on the list (76 the next year)
Tumblr media
I know. It’s a meme nowadays. But still. Have you any idea how satisfying a song with an initial beat that looks like small pulsing yellow and blue lights in the dark ACTUALLY titled “Fireflies” is? How gentle it all sounds and looks, even when the music soars? The number of drawings and paintings I made just based on the colors of THAT song? It’s like a synth pop version of one of my favorite Mike Oldfield tunes ever, Weightless.
And then, on top of all the rest, how relatable was that guy’s body language and general attitude?? Before even knowing he was on the spectrum I was like “oh BIG mood.”
Also following his twitter was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah. I would have loved to put Coldplay or Mika in that #1 spot, but I’m not too mad about it thanks to this wonderful little song and its author. Such a shame Deer in the Headlights and Alligator Sky aren’t elligible for the 2011 list.
Next up: Johannes finally moves out and finds a great job and starts living a little, plus here’s a #1 that will be difficult to justify

My Reaction to “Birds of Prey“
*in best Roman Sionis impression*  WHOOO!
Figured I might as well FINALLY watch it.  On with the show!
*silently jams to the opening logos*
This animated intro is great.
*snorts at the little animation of how an egg gets fertilized*
Why is this animated Joker a different (and actually better) character design than what we got in Suicide Squad?  Were we robbed of Letoker in full Joker suited glory?  I think we were.
“Behind every successful man is a badass broad.”  *points at screen in agreement*
I love Harley’s freaking rainbow apartment
The hyena!
This movie has the same amount of color saturation as “Pulp Fiction”
Freaking Bernie the Beaver is holding her tissues!  We stan supportive friends!
*gasp* Cass!
This guy [Roman’s driver] looks an awful lot like Jon Hamm and that is never gonna go away
“It’s not a party without a little drama!”  I love Ewan McGregor
*snorts in hilarity when Harley turns to address the audience about how much she doesn’t like Roman in front of Roman*
“Do give the Joker my [Roman] best.”  Uhhh....
*jams the crap out to “Boss Bitch” by Doja Cat*
*laughs at Harley drunkenly giving relationship advice to a female bust in the club*
“Some people have the Eiffel Tower.  Or Olive Garden.”  Can we please hear the stories about Gotham’s Olive Garden?
Oh that shot [of Harley walking away from the Ace Chemicals explosion] is great
[Four Minutes Ago]  *snorts in hilarity*
So far I actually really like Rosie Perez as Montoya.
Huntress!
*Huntress kills the mob people in the flashback*  That was awesome.  And the way Montoya steps back and forth to investigate the body is great.
“Harley Quinn just called open season on herself.”  And oop.
God, seeing Ewan as Black Mask is really gonna throw me off but man this is gonna be a great performance.
*jaw drops in horror when Zsasz removes someone’s FACE*
JESUS CHRIST HOLY SHIT RATED “R” HUH?!?
“Is that a snot bubble?”  Shit!
OHHHHH THAT SHOT OF ROMAN WITH THE MASK ON!!!  AAAAAAHHHH!!
The SATURATION IN THIS MOVIE
Also the soundtrack and aesthetic in this movie is very... “Suicide Squad”-esque
Man that sandwich looks good
*jaw drops when Harley accidentally throws her sandwich into the road*
Also they de-saturated everything again hahaha
Oh my gosh that guy [”Happy”] is HUGE
[GRIEVANCE:  COSMETIC VANDALISM]  Yeah, that sounds about right
“Par-ley??”  *snorts*
Her [Montoya’s] shirt....
Also why is she wearing that shirt at work?
This movie is giving me huge Tarantino vibes
Why does the actor that plays Montoya’s boss looks familiar?
Oh!  He’s Rufus in “Supernatural.”  Bobby’s kinda buddy!
“Ms. Montoya, we do have a dress code.”  There we go.
They are really just going back and forth in the timeline to cover everything, aren’t they?
Harley’s using nonlethal rounds?
The action set pieces in this movie so far are awesome.
*says “Run, piggy, run!” along with Harley*
Of course Dinah is singing “This Is A Man’s World”
Also I’ve seen like a 20 second Twitter compilation of Roman saying the f-bomb and it’s glorious
“We could make our own family.”  Oh snap.
WAIT THAT’S THE GUY WHOSE FACE ZSASZ REMOVED!
Does... Roman... like Dinah?  Like... that?  Or is this manipulation?
*chuckles when drunk Harley slides up next to Dinah at the bar*
*gets very uncomfortable at a guy trying to take advantage of a drunk Harley*
C’mon Dinah...
What’s the song playing here [when Dinah’s beating up the guys in the alley]?
Uh whatcha doing in the corner there, Zsasz?
“Oh sooongbirrddd?”  Noo...
Did I just see a street sign that said “ANUS”?
So is Cass faking a broken wrist or does she actually have a broken wrist?
So far my favorite characters are Montoya and Dinah.  Not gonna lie.
*has to muffle laughter when Roman does the mmkay hand sign*
“I mean, I like crossbows!”  *giggles*
Holy shit, Zsasz is jealous of Dinah.
“Look at his little ears, the little haircut...”  *insane giggling*
ZSASZ IS DYING IN THE BACK I LOVE THIS SONG
Dinah is clearly rethinking some life decisions while looking at that statue of Roman
*jams out to “Sway with Me” by GALAXRA*
*Cass robs Zsasz of the diamond*  WHOOP!
*winces when Roman does acupuncture*
“SHE’s a chILDDD!!”  *laughs*
ZSASZ
Ho shit that shot of Roman on top of the stairs looking down at Harley
“VOTED FOR BERNIE” HAHAHA
*Harley completely derails Roman’s villain monologue*  THIS IS AMAZING
HE [Roman] GOT A BOWL OF POPCORN
*Zsasz licks Harley’s cheek*  EEUUUGGGHHH!!
Did that goon just pull a tampon out of Harley’s pocket?
I’M SORRY CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE PICTURE OF NUDE ELEANOR ROOSEVELT?
*gasps when Roman backhands Harley across the face*
OH HERE WE GO
HOLY SHIT THIS IS GREAT
ROMAN IN THE STRIPED SUIT
THE CHOREOGRAPHY
WHY WAS IT SO SHORT I LOVED IT
Where is this cover at on the official soundtrack?!?
“I’ll give you ‘til midnight.”  Hold on, hold on, what’s the timeline for this movie?
Harley’s just booking it in the background
Aaaand we’re back at the beginning!
Aaand there’s Harley!
Wait there’s about an hour left and we just now got to Harley meeting Cass?
CONFETTIIIII!!
Is she just using paint bombs on all the guards?
Harley, trying to enter the cells:  I AM PRESSING.  EVERY BUTTON.  I CAN FIND.
Why would they put Cass in the cell block with all the adults?
OH HALSEY!  COME THROUGH!
*Harley slides across the floor to knock a guy down*  OHHHH!!!
Daniel Pemberton’s orchestral score for this movie is reminding me an awful lot of “Into the Spiderverse”
Is that Katana’s sword?!?  How the hell did it get there?!?
WAIT SHE’S GONNA HUFF THE COCAINE?!?
Jesus, now THIS is Harley’s fighting style!  Holy crap!
*gasps when Harley gets kicked back and knocks off a car door off its hinges*
*jaw drops*  SHE JUST SET THAT DUDE’S BEARD ON FIRE
How does everyone seem to know where Harley is?
*Smash cut to Harley buying laxative for Dinah in the store*  Hahahahahaha!
“I do not care that you’re [Cass] a kid.”  Yeah, Harley, didn’t you uh... assist in the murder of Jason Todd in this universe?  Hmmm???
Wait so how long ago have Harley and the Joker been together?
Doc calls Harley “lotus flower”!
Those are the nuns from the school in the beginning!
She is actually... talking to the beaver
“[Joker] Sounds like a dick.”  I mean, yeah.
Also I just realized that Harley drew an actual dick in the Joker drawing’s mouth
HUNTRESS!
OH NOW WE’RE GETTING INTRODUCED TO HELENA!
*eyes widen in shock at the Bertenelli massacre*
*chuckles at the smash cut to Helena practicing in the mirror*
*Roman sees someone laughing in the club*  Oh no.
“Get on the table.”  Uh.
Oh no what is he doing?
“DANCE, ERICA!”  Ohh.  Shit.
“Take your dress off.”  *jaw drops in horror*
God, I cannot watch this.  Holy-
*has to avert eyes*
*Roman stops Dinah from leaving*  NO.
“You soothe me, little bird.”  AHHHHHHHHHHHHH-
OK, I can take a breather now.  Ohhhh my God...
They’re [Harley and Cass] really just having a girl’s night
BRUCE, NOOOOO!!!
“No one knew we were here except-”  DOC SOLD THEM OUT!
“This next bit ain’t very pretty.”  Oh boy.
“I [Roman] own this town.  You have my protection.”  Mmmmm... no?
Whoa this super dramatic cover of “Hit Me with Your Best Shot”
OH HE’S [Zsasz] GONNA SEE THE TEXT SHE [Dinah] SENT [to Montoya]!
*Roman starts to break down*  Oh.  Shit.
OH THIS MUSIC
*Roman puts the mask on*  OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
OH THIS IS GREAT
Also of course Joker and Harley had a hideout in Amusement Mile
*winces when Montoya punches Harley right in the boob*
*Harley kicks Montoya out the window*  Oh she dead
*gasps*  Zsasz!
Man that sideways shot of him is terrifying!
OH FRICK NO
JESUS I DON’T LIKE THIS
So is it implied that Zsasz only kills women or what?  I thought he was an equal opportunity killer?
“That’s why he [Roman] needs me [Zsasz] to look after him.”  Dude.
...did they just kill Zsasz?
Everyone except Harley is pointing guns at each other and all I’m thinking of is that scene from “The Office”
*snorts in hilarity for Harley clapping for Helena completing her kill list*
Oh Roman just brought a whole freaking army
OHHHH HE’S GOT THE MASK
Oh this music *chef’s kiss*
Oh my God is Roman gonna find Zsasz’s body?
Oh that crane shot out of the lair and back outside?  That’s some good shit.  Cathy Yan, I see you.
“I [Helena] DON’T HAVE RAGE ISSUES!”  DINAH’S FACE!
*Helena pounces on a goon in the slide down and kills him*  Geez that’s awesome
This whole set is great
*Helena gives Cass her old toy truck*  THIS MAKES ME SAD
Yeah when did Harley have time to put on her skates?
Some dude just gets shanked then leaps back up
That fight scene just went by real quick
*gasps when Roman shoots Montoya*
*jaw drops when Dinah does the Canary Cry*
*Harley gets sideswiped by one of Roman’s goons*  Yeah no there’s like half a rib cage gone
*Harley works on overtaking one of Roman’s goons’ car*  CRAZY TOWN BEEP BEEP!
*Harley backflips onto the top of Roman’s car*  OHHHH!
Founders Pier... geez that looks great
Wait are those all Roman’s goons just lining the dock or are those just statues?
Oh they’re all statues.  That’s creepy.
“exCUUSEE me?!?”  *snorts in hilarity*
*jaw drops when Cass tucks a grenade in Roman’s coat and activates it*
*still shocked when he FREAKING EXPLODES*
I’M SORRY THEY JUST KILLED OFF BLACK MASK
*Cass finally goes to the bathroom*  Finally!
“Does she always [Montoya] talk like the cop in a bad 80s movie?”  *laughs*
Guys Helena is great
*laughs when Helena laughs at the fact that Harley stole Dinah’s car*
“They call themselves the Birds of Prey.”  Yay!  Lemme see them again!
Harley’s jacket has a bedazzled vagina on the back of it
Look at Cass with her jacket and sunglasses!
“Yeah, I made the kid my apprentice.”  Yeah, that’s not gonna last long.

You will remember things that we never said ch 6
Warning: angst, fluff,
Radiohead -talk show host
Dolly Trauma songs: "Stephanie" , Trepana
ch 1,  ch 2,  ch 3, ch 4  ch 5 ch 7
Tumblr media
Stephanie gets ready nervously. She doesn’t want to disappoint Axel but is pretty sure she will. She knows in all reality Lisa wasn’t the only person he has been with. And She is practically a virgin in his world. A big part of her doesn’t even know why he is interested.
She thinks, the fact he said he loves me doesn’t really mean he does, does it? Why am I even going though with this with someone so experienced? She looked in the mirror. Twirled in her black flirty mini skirt. Adjusted her breasts in her hot pink low-cut t-shirt. And took a deep cleansing breath. To late to back out now girl he will be here any minute.
       Axel texted:
        You ready?
       Stephanie:
I think so. Be right down.
She grabbed her phone. Put it in her backpack with some over night necessities. And went to get in Axel’s truck.
As soon as Stephanie is in his truck Axel pulls her face over to kiss her deep and powerfully. Her hands go under his arms to hold his shoulders while he keeps kissing her until he needs a full breath. His eyes are dark green hungry when he eventually pulls away. “You look so good I could eat you right now Stephanie.” A low growl rumbled from his chest. “But I can wait.” He pulls away from the building to head to the venue.
Stephanie gasped as she heard the sound coming from him. Her eyes were wide. She was a mix of turned on and scared. She decided talking about schoolwork would calm her body’s reactions.
“I got a lot of work done.” She tried to sound casual. “I’m ahead on most of my subjects.”
“I’m sure you always get your work done and do what your told,” He picked her hand up to kiss it while focusing one eye on her and one on the road.
Stephanie was amazed how he could do that.  He liked she hadn’t mentioned how weird his eyes were. He knew she had to notice.
“Did you do your tattoos yourself Axel?” She watched him drive so confidently.
“Some of them.” He kept a hold of her hand like it was a lifeline.
“Why the one on your neck.” She was curious about all of them really. “It is so abrasive.”
“That tat scares off most of the people that fucking suck.” Axel was bluntly honest. “You know how the world is Stephanie. Most people are just asshats.”
“I guess,” She looks down biting her lip.
“My innocent pretty girl.” He smiled. “I guess that’s why I love you. I think my next tat will be the picture I did for Art class. Somewhere everyone can see it.”
She giggled, “Really?”
He pulled into the bar parking lot. “Yes, really.”
Axel gets out of the truck. He rushes around to open Stephanie’s door. “Todd and Drake have all the equipment with them. I need to help them carry things inside after I set you up at the bar, alright?”
“You want me to help carry equipment?” She asked.
Axel puts his hand on her lower back ushering her inside. “No need for that. Sit right here for now.” He kisses her quickly. Then gets the bar tender’s attention. “Give her a virgin colada. Does that sound good Stephanie.”
“Yes, Axel.” She smiles.
Axel leaves to help his bandmates who are just coming in the door. They set up a merchandise table in the back with CDs and T-shirts before setting up their equipment.
Stephanie sips on her drink watching excitedly as they set up on the small stage just a few feet away. Drake slams his drum set. Tightens a few things. Then slams them some more. Todd tunes a few of his guitars. Axel blows in the mic and grins at the sound and how Stephanie is watching. He puts a guitar around him starting to play a few cords with his back turned.
Stephanie perks up as she hears him play. It’s the first time she has seen him play the guitar and not just sing. Even though there isn’t to many people in the bar her initial instinct is to rush up to the stage. She holds herself back.
“Let’s warm up with Talk Show Host by Radio Head ” Zeitgeist starts playing. Axel turns around to start singing into the microphone.
“I want to I want to be someone else or I'll explode Floating upon the surface for the birds The birds The birds
You want me Fucking and come and find me I'll be waiting With a gun and a pack of sandwiches and nothing Nothing Nothing Nothing
You want me Well come on and break the door down You want me Fucking come on and break the door down I'm ready I'm ready I'm ready I'm ready I'm ready I'm ready”
Stephanie is biting her lip as Axel jumps off stage and walks over to her. His face is emotionless. He kiss her cheek and rests a hand on her knee as he look around her to get the bartenders attention. “I need two Millers and a bottled water.”
The bar tender nod and gets him what he asked for.
Axel looks at Stephanie intensely. “How did that sound from here Stephanie?”
“It was great Axel,” She was all starry eyed. “I love that song.”
“Me to,” He grins rubbing his hand over her knee. “let me give these beers to the guys and we will all go hang out by the merch table until it is time for us to go on.”
“Cool,” Stephanie said.
Todd and Drake were setting the bands equipment aside. They took their beers and hoped off stage going straight to the merchandise table. Axel took Stephanie’s hand. People started filtering into the bar. They went to the back, Stephanie sat down as Axel and the other guys started chatting with fans and selling their merch. Occasionally, Axel looked back to Stephanie with a nod. She smiled and nodded back.
A young girl Stephanie thinks might have snuck in the back of the club or had a fake ID giggled as Axel shows her the merch on the table. After she buys something, she leans in, to hug Axel. Stephanie gets up. She rubs Axel’s back. He puts his arm around her. The girl stands with a smirk on her face.
“Sally this is my girlfriend, Stephanie.” Axel kisses Stephanie’s cheek. Sally walks away. Axel holds up an XL sweatshirt to Stephanie. “We don’t have any smaller left, but you want this one?”
Stephanie nods yes. Axel slides it on her. Then puts a CD in the front pocket. He whispers, “You can wear this when you miss me. Listen to the CD to hear my voice.”
Shivers run through her body. “Thanks Axel.
Drake shakes his head watching them, “I didn’t know we were giving free merch to band bitches now.”
Axel glares at him.
Stephanie laughs, “Well, now you know.”
Axel looks at her and chuckles. “Yeah Drake, now you know.”
He introduces Stephanie to a few more fans as she helps sell the merch. He gets a guy to buy an extra large for his girl because it looks so cute on Stephanie. She blushes a little when Axel has her turn around to model the look. Zeigeist packs up their merch as the next band comes in to sell their stuff.
Drake and Todd take the boxes of left over merch to the van. Axel pulls Stephanie into a dark corner to kiss her. He reaches under her skirt rubbing her slit through her panties.
“Not long now,” He whispers to her. “Go on up in your spot. I have a performance to do. And Then we go to my place..”
Stephanie gasps when she feels Axel’s touch. She bites her lip not to make a sound. With the loudness of the crowd no one would probably hear her anyway, but she didn’t want to take that chance. Axel goes to the backstage area. Stephanie makes her way to the front of the stage. It is not super packed so she has no problem. She notices all females up front and smirks. She knows what most of these girls are after and he’s taken.
When Zeigeist takes the stage and begin to play people scream. Axel nods to Stephanie. Then acknowledges the audience. “Thank you for coming out to hear us tonight and buying our shit. This first one’s called Trepana
The music starts. Axel looks down until its time for him to start singing. “Stealing one glimpse of a moment forbidden. Each tells the other it laid as we planned it. Ten minutes later a whisper in my ear. Two minutes later, why am I still here. Will you remember things that we never said.,,If this was simple would sleep follow liquid. And if he was watching would I still make you wet? And why is it up to me always, always up to you, up to us. Two minutes later I’ve known you forever. In the next life, Will you remember things that we never sang…darling first my darling first, You will remember things that we never sang, you will remember…tell me how this will end…we never said…Just because.”
Stephanie revels in the sound. She worships at the stage alter like many others there. Some stand with their arms wrapped around their partners in front of them. They’re not jealous how horny Zeitgeist, especial Axel, gets their partners. They know it will only benefit them at the end of the night.
“This is something new,” Axel straps a guitar around him. “It’s called Stephanie” He begins to play and sings, “She’s on her knees and she lying, she’s one degree from receiving, there’s got to be why she lying,  beer on the floor, she a diamond, So, where will you sleep tonight,,, Stephanie I think your minds miles away, your talking to rocks again, its funny how I can’t believe you today, this time was no good for us,  luck justified is amazing, she is a tease like a new string, theft justified is amazing, so take what you need, it’s a good thing, And where will you sleep tonight… Stephanie I think your minds arms away,  I wanna go, we need to go, I’d love to go…This time is no good for us,.. You say, you say, I want everything to be great for us, happy like nothing’s wrong…when will the fire be going out. When will divine voices call you out.. Want me, Stephanie…When will you say that we’re going out…”
Axel takes the guitar off. He jumps down to Stephanie. She wraps her arms around him tightly tears in her eyes.
Axel holds her as some fans stare, “Sorry if that’s not what you expected. I was still fucking pissed when I wrote part of it.”
“I loved it Axel,” She kissed him. He kissed her back. “And I will tell whoever you want, we are going out.”
“Will you be sure to tell Ryan?” Axel murmurs in her ear.
“I haven’t talk to him since the movie Axel.” She leaned her forehead against his. “But I will tell him I only belong to you the next time I see him.”
“I like the sound of that,” Axel grins. “Your mine. Let’s go to my place.”
He puts his hand on her back, escorting Stephanie out of the club. A few people stop to say they loved the new song. He just nodded as he moved on with her. His hair and body dripped with sweat. Some droplets dripped down his face. There was something about the pheromones he gave off that still attracted Stephanie in his perspiring state. She didn’t mind being close to him at all.

Weekend Picks: 2/21-2/23
Tumblr media
Big Head Todd and the Monsters
BY JORDAN MAINZER
There were no live picks for yesterday, but plenty for the weekend!
2/21: Objekt, Smartbar
Here’s what we wrote about Objekt’s Cocoon Crush when we named it our #6 album of 2018:
“An artist solidly known for his bold exploration of techno, Objekt now takes a plunge into a new kind of ethereal beauty on Cocoon Crush. A foray into ambient music, Objekt subverts a lot of what we have come to expect from him. The line between digital and analog is smeared. Tracks are ungrounded, punctuated still by percussion and synthesizers, but in patterns and textures that materialize in mysterious ways. And just as they appear, they stutter and morph in ways unexpected to the listener. The cold machinations of the dancefloor are still present; they are just stretched and masked in exciting and rewarding ways.”
Darwin and Flower Flood open.
2/21: Knuckle Puck, Beat Kitchen
We previewed Knuckle Puck’s set at Durty Nellie’s two years ago:
“Covering last year’s Riot Fest, I found Knuckle Puck the worst set of the festival, though I did remark that the band’s new, unreleased material had the crowd’s attention as much as their released material. As it turns out, the album versions of the songs are pretty good. Shapeshifter, released about a month later in October, was exemplary of what Knuckle Puck do best–write catchy songs with powerful melodies and hooks, enough to showcase the band’s more-than-capable instrumental prowess while avoiding the try-hard singing that plagues so many of today’s emo bands.”
Cleveland power poppers Heart Attack Man and Wilkes Barre hardcore band One Step Closer open.

2/21: James McMurtry, Old Town School of Folk Music
We previewed James McMurtry’s show at FitzGerald’s two years ago:
“James McMurtry plays tonight as part of the 37th Annual American Music Festival at Fitzgerald’s, still touring strong off of Complicated Game (one of our favorite albums of 2015) like he was when it first came out. When we caught up with him last November, he said of new songs, 'I’ve jotted them down on my phone as I’ve gone along. That whole record was written on an iPhone3. Unfortunately, I dropped that phone, I don’t have the cool Notes app anymore.' Well, either he’s got a new phone or doesn’t need one, because late last year, he released 'State of the Union', a trademark jab at fascism and racism. It might not be as succinct as him telling us 'There never been a good Nazi a day on this earth dead or alive,' but at least there’s hope for more new material.”
2/21: Raphael Saadiq & Jamila Woods, Vic Theatre
Last year, Raphael Saadiq released his first album in 8 years (since the great Stone Rollin’). Jimmy Lee is named after, inspired by, and partially about his brother who died of heroin overdose after contracting HIV many years ago. As such, whether singing or inhabiting the character of his brother, Saadiq is at times uncharacteristically somber. He’s at the other end of a barrel of a gun on “Sinners Prayer”, reflecting on his wrongs, wondering whether it’s too late: “When a sinner is praying, God, will you hear it?” He wears a heavy burden on the funky, stomping “Something Keeps Calling Me”, the song’s wailing guitar solo in the bridge a mirror to his emotions. Saadiq calls out society, too, just as much as himself. “The people are mad,” he sings on “This World is Drunk”. The one-two punch of anti-mass incarceration jams “Rikers Island” and “Rikers Island Redux” presents the issue as simply as it should be put: “Too many n***as in Rikers Island / Why must it be / Set them free.” The former expresses its anger with upbeat piano and a simple refrain, the latter with spoken word over gentle guitar strums.
Best, though, are the reflections of grace that rise above the despair. On “I’m Feeling Love”, over a slower, more warbling funk, Saadiq, singing as his brother, is thankful for the little that he has. And on the skittering, rolling “Glory To The Veins”, he again distills his brother’s death to what matters: “I lost a brother to AIDS / Still, he laughed every day.” We’re lucky that as he gets older, reflecting on his life, and playing live reflecting on his career in Tony! Toni! Toné! and all the legendary artists like D’Angelo and Solange that he’s produced, Saadiq is willing to impart his wisdom.
Jamila Woods’ LEGACY! LEGACY! was one of our favorite albums of last year:
“Yes, Jamila Woods’ stunning LEGACY! LEGACY! is a tribute to important artists of color. What makes it stand out among other tributes, however, is the remarkable way Woods is able to present how each figure has guided her. Take opener 'BETTY', about funk artist Betty Davis, a woman married to a far more famous jazz trumpeter who gets his own song later on. Woods explores the gender and power dynamic in the relationship and uses it to make a personal and universal plea: 'Let me be, I’m trying to fly.' Fly, she does. On 'ZORA', over a hip hop beat, Woods succinctly declares in an all-time line, 'My weaponry is my energy', the drive and desire the catalyst in the noble goal to make her mark on the world as a black woman as opposed to while being a black woman. In various interviews surrounding the album release, Woods spoke about being inspired by black artists who perform and make art truly for themselves independent and often in spite of the race of the end consumers. 'Motherfuckers won’t shut up,' beings 'MUDDY', referencing Muddy Waters adoption of electric guitar because white audiences would talk over his sets; 'Shut up, motherfucker,' she sings inversely on 'MILES', 'I don’t take requests.' But the percussive, jazzy 'EARTHA' best encapsulates her aims of self-love and ultimate pride. 'I used to be afraid of myself,' Woods admits before stating, 'I don’t wanna compromise.' Ultimately, the refrain of, 'Who’s gonna share my love for me with me?' is the mindset by which Woods approaches relationships throughout the record and then life itself. You can be a part of it, but she comes first.”
DJ Duggz also opens.
2/21: The Wailers, SPACE
We previewed The Wailers’ set at Old Town School of Folk Music last year:
“Bob Marley might not be around, but his original band, containing many of the original members and their children, continues to play his songs. Seeing them in a venue as small as this is rare.”
Tonight at SPACE--an even smaller venue--they play two shows, an early and late one.
Tumblr media
Joe Henry
2/22: Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Vic Theatre
We previewed Big Head Todd & The Monsters’ show at the Vic Theatre two years ago:
“The Colorado jam band that saw mainstream success in the 90′s is touring fresh off of last year’s heavy New World Arisin’. In 2016, as Big Head Blues Club (the band’s project with a wide array of blues legends like Cedric Burnside and Charlie Musselwhite), they released Way Down Inside. But for the full potential of Big Head Todd and the Monsters, go a few years back and try 2014′s Black Beehive, a rawer, more diverse blues record than you’d expect from the band who recorded 'Bittersweet'. What’s for sure is that live, they’ll lean heavily on the new material while not forgoing their more beloved classics.”
They haven’t released a new album since then but have released a new song every month as part of a series. They should play some of these live, including gospel piano ballad “Hard Times Come No More” and the funky, rollicking “Train of Storms”.
Nashville band Los Colognes open.
2/22: Todd Barry, Thalia Hall
We previewed Todd Barry’s sets at SPACE two years ago:
“So, this isn’t exactly music, but deadpan comedian Todd Barry is performing 2 stand-up sets in one night at SPACE. Commemorating his 30 years of being a comedian, he’s going on another crowd work-only tour like the one documented in his 2014 special Todd Barry: The Crowd Work Tour. From watching that and his most recent Netflix special Spicy Honey, Barry’s dry observational humor is effortlessly tailored to specific crowds and cities, making this one of the must-see comedy events of the year.”
Even if tonight isn’t crowd work-only, he should do some of his specialty.
Chicago-based stand-up comic Chelsea Hood opens.

2/22: Joe Henry, Old Town School of Folk Music
Since we last saw Joe Henry five years ago, he’s done quite a bit of production work and released two albums, 2017′s Thrum, and last year’s The Gospel According to Water. In between the two, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer; considering that, the latter takes on weight. It’s, first and foremost, raw, from the guitar playing on “Famine Walk” to the title track. But Gospel sports moments of beauty, too, as on the woodwind of “Mule” and rich vocal harmonies of “In Time For Tomorrow” and “The Fact of Love”.
Americana duo Birds of Chicago open.

2/22: Tim and Eric, Chicago Theatre
Who knows what Tim and Eric will bring to their Chicago stop of their Mandatory Attendance tour, other than their purported "brand new spoofs, goofs and insanity” and “special surprises.” The last time I saw them, Dr. Steve Brule showed up and almost married Jan Skylar!
2/22: Hot Snakes, Pissed Jeans, & HIDE, Empty Bottle
Music Frozen Dancing is upon us again, with suggested donations benefiting the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless! Go and donate!
We last listened to Hot Snakes from the medical tent at September’s Riot Fest. Since then, they’ve released the first two of four seasonal 7-inch singles leading up to the next LP: the burner “Checkmate” and wonderfully plodding laziness anthem “I Shall Be Free”. (The latter’s 7-inch has “A Place in the Sun” as an exclusive.)
Hot Snakes also play Sunday night at the Bottle with an opening set from post punk band Pink Avalanche.
Allentown hardcore band Pissed Jeans haven’t released anything since 2017′s Why Love Now, but they’re thankfully back to warm your pants before Hot Snakes. Maybe they’ll have some new songs to play?
Local industrial duo HIDE (artist Heather Gabel and percussionist Seth Sher) released their second album last year, the raw, disgusting Hell is Here. The drum programming and screaming is just as cringingly visceral as the recorded sounds of vomit hitting a toilet that end opening track “Chainsaw”.
Synth band Crash Course in Science, arty The Hecks, and local punk band Hitter also open.

chapter two: laughter is the best medicine
Neo-Gotham, Friday, June 13 2042 9:10 AM
GRAYSON
The laughter hasn’t stopped.
Even as the television whites out, it continues to vibrate through him. Pain slashes across Dick’s hand, hot coffee, and blood from the crushed ug in his hand. The pieces fall to lie, forgotten, on the counter and floor.
Dimly, he shakes the injured appendage, not judging it worth immediate treatment, and creeps closer to the windows of his apartment. The laughter continues to get louder, echoing up from the streets, bouncing off the glass and bricks of the skyscrapers, and mixing with the sound of explosions and people screaming.
From his vantage point, he watches cars veer off-course and masses of pedestrians on the street altering their everyday routes to suddenly teem in every other direction. They crowd together in a frenzy of indescribable movement; there are explosions and more screams, but somehow, it’s all muted by the persistent presence of the laughter, which isn’t just inside anymore.
Whirling around, Dick recoils as Black appears in the hallway, completely nude. She lurches forward, the movement a parody of her usual slinking gait, but Dick’s attention is on her face. It’s pulled into a grin that causes obvious pain, judging by the tears dripping trails of smoky mascara down her cheeks. Her pupils are wide and sightless, and the disturbing giggles rasp like they are being torn from her throat.
“Well, this isn’t good,” he mutters, edging away from the window and automatically looking for a spot in his apartment that has the most maneuvering space.
The minute he moves, Black lunges forward, splitting herself into nine cackling doppelgangers that consume the remaining space of his apartment.

DRAKE
9:15 AM
Tim rocks back and forth, stomach clenched with dread and nausea that threatens to send bile spilling up his throat.
‘Hush little baby, don’t say a word,
Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.’
He stumbles from the kitchen, needing air, needing to escape—
His laptop lies on the floor, a mass of smoking screen and wire, while outside the television is blaring again.
Except no one’s talking.
It’s just the laughter; the blue, humanoid shape has morphed, the identity filter warbled and stretched over a grin that isn’t human.
‘And if that mockingbird don’t sing,
Mama’s gonna buy you a diamond ring.’
His knees buckle, hands clapped to his ears to drown out the echoing memory of Harley Quinn’s mocking singsong. He’s already folding forward in a reflexive fetal position, waiting for the crackle of electricity or the shock of cold water in his face.
He needs to get out, he needs distance, needs a shield—
What the hell do you think you’re doing, Replacement?
Tim startles, hearing a sneer in his mind just as loud—louder than—the other voice. He can almost imagine him standing in front of him—the ancient Robin suit torn and bloody, morphing into the Kevlar armor, red helmet beneath his arm.
The image of white-streaked hair and challenging smirk is the bastion against the monsters in his head.
Tim has never questioned why his mind’s defenses against the pull of insanity took the form of Jason Todd. It makes a certain, lopsided amount of sense—they were both victims of the Joker, both ruined by him,
The Robin who died, and the Robin that went insane.
To this day, Tim couldn’t say which was which.
Are you seriously going to let him get to you again ? The fucker’s dead.
“No,” Tim says out loud, taking a trembling breath and forcing himself to stand straight. He has to keep his head, has to get his wife to safety, has to figure out how all this happened—
“Arlie,” he remembers, though it comes out more like a croak. “Arlie, we have to—”
As he turns, he catches a flash of movement in his periphery, and his long-buried reflexes kick in, allowing him to narrowly dodge the butchers' knife being lobbed at his head. It shatters a red vase of flowers in the living room.
His wife stumbles toward him from the kitchen—when did she come downstairs? —her face twisted into a replica of the one that has haunted Tim’s dreams for decades.

GORDON
9: 15 AM
It’s not just her work computer, but the screen of her cell and tablet as well.
Every screen that she can see—each one she can hear from beyond the thin walls of her office—has been commandeered by the Joker’s likeness.
The video might have paralyzed others with inactivity, but Barbara immediately throws herself into action. Puzzling this out means ignoring that horrible voice, not getting sucked down into a morass of memory and pain.
“Williams! Fillmore! You’d better be ready to trace this thing!” she snaps over the intercom and starts typing commands into her computer, trying to wrest back control of it from whatever has taken over her system.
She might not have been Oracle for decades now, but it’s like riding a bike.
“And get a quad out on the street, now! I don’t want chaos in the streets!”
Especially not after the last Joker-related attack.
She regains control of her system halfway through the video and has started tracking IP addresses even as the clown’s hair-raising cackle and tinny music fade away. On another screen, she pulls up every file that exists on the Joker, his pretenders, the gangs, known snitches—
She will not allow this city to fall into chaos because of a damn video.
Except, maybe she won’t have time to worry about the chaos outside, because it hits her suddenly that the laughing hasn’t stopped. Only now, it’s coming from right outside her office and not from her devices.
Narrowing her eyes, Barbara has her service weapon in hand and the other hovering over her belt where she secretly keeps a Batarang (just in case). She’s barely n her feet when the door to her office opens and there’s one of her lieutenants, shoulders shaking and teeth bared in a pained grin.
She can’t fight the momentary sliver of terror that ripples up her back—
Gunshot. Spilled tea. Falling, falling back. Glass table shattering. Dad crying out—pain. So much pain.
—before returning to herself.
The man in front of her now, his eyes are vacant but there’s enough intelligence remaining that he’s able to raise his own gun at her and disengage the safety.
“Davis,” she says slowly, a warning and a plea despite knowing it’s futile at this point. She doesn’t want to have to shoot him. He has a wife and three kids. They attended his commendation ceremony, the youngest daughter wants to be a cop— “Davis, put the gun dow—!”
BANG!

WAYNE
9:15 AM
There will always be a part of Bruce Wayne that freezes to the core when he hears that voice.
Instantaneous reactions have always been a trademark of Batman, drilled into him by years of training at the hands of assassins and thieves alike. But when it comes to the Joker, there is always that fraction of a second that gives way to hesitation—something born of fear or disbelief, he doesn’t know—before he throws himself into action. Before his brain registers the immediacy of a threat.
Maybe that’s why the maniac got away. Maybe that half-second was all he needed to dictate the entire course of their encounters; his defeats included. The clown always had the same ability to predict several moves ahead, more so than Bruce; sometimes he wondered if the Joker wasn’t a little bit precognitive.
That won’t happen now—that shouldn’t happen now—because the Joker is dead.
Batman buried him.
He destroyed the chip linking him to Tim, he ensured that no one would ever hear that high-pitched, pitiless cackle ever again.
And yet, here it is, filling the underground caverns and startling the roosted bats into a shrieking frenzy as the video feed goes blank.
Bruce starts toward the computer, half-a-dozen plans of action coming together in his head, to trace and deal with whatever this threat is—whoever this pretender is. Before he can reach the command station, however, his field of vision goes brown.
Hundreds of the tiny, flying creatures surround him, screaming; their tiny claws slicing the exposed skin of his hands and face.
He stumbles, hiding his eyes in the crook of his elbow, while his hand digs into his pocket; it’s difficult with the tiny creatures clinging to him, clinging to wrist and fingers and sinking their teeth into him in distinctly non-bat behavior.
Fingers catching on his prize, he takes a deep breath and then depresses the button on the quarter-sized device.
The nerve agent is meant to disorient an opponent or, depending on body weight, knock them out for the few seconds needed to subdue them. For the tiny creatures attacking him, it will render them unconscious for a lot longer.
They drop and tumble around him in a circle, and when he can’t feel anymore slashing at him, he carefully navigates through the tiny bodies and out of the area affected by the nerve agent. Only then does he allow himself to take a breath, considering the strewn bodies around him in concern; they are still alive, but he doesn’t know exactly how the chemicals will affect them.
It makes no sense. The bats in here never attack, not unless he engages the subsonic alarms, which he hasn’t had to do in decades.
Bruce doesn’t believe in coincidences and knows that somehow, there’s a connection between the video and the bats. He just doesn’t know—
There’s a gasping, snorting sound behind him.
He realizes it was hidden by the shrieking of the bats before, but now it’s clearly discernible.
Turning around, he stares in horror as Ace, staggers forward on shaking legs, mouth-frothing and ears pulled back against his head. The dog’s lips are pulled up high over sharp canines in a grin that should not be possible on an animal.
“Ace,” Bruce croaks.
The beast huffs, the sound a painful, morbid facsimile of a human laugh, and then snarls, throwing itself bodily at Bruce.

MCGINNIS
9:15 AM
It’s not the Joker, Terry tells himself, teeth clenched and hand already fumbling around his phone to call Bruce. It can’t be him. It’s just a copy-cat.
But the laugh…he will never forget that sound in his whole life. And that’s real.
“Mom, I have to—” he begins, only to choke when he watches his mother collapse. “Mom!”
He hurries to her side just as seems to go into some kind of seizure.
“Matt, call an ambulance!” Terry snaps, tossing his phone in the vicinity of his brother’s blanket-wrapped body. He is on his knees then, carefully turning his mother onto her side while she shakes and curls into herself.
There’s a gasping, wheezing sound from behind him, but he can’t pay attention to it, too busy trying to keep his mother from clawing at her face. Her skin begins to drain of color as if all the blood in her body has disappeared, and he finds himself seeking some kind of wound that might explain it.
Then his eyes land on her face, and his stomach clenches.
Mom’s eyes have gone blank, her face twitching violently as if there’s an electric current running through it. Her lips part over her teeth, mouth lifting at the corners until the muscles strain to an unnatural degree. Her lips have gone violently red, and her breathing changes from gasping to a stunted, wheezing rattle.
And then there’s laughter.
It echoes behind him and Terry jerks his head to one side, watching in horror as his little brother shuffles from the couch, giggling madly with an identical smile on his face.
Joker toxin, he realizes before something smacks into his face and he tumbles back on his heels.
Mom’s hand trembles—broken thumb, she hit with a closed fist—but she still crawls toward him with an insane gleam in her eye.
She is laughing, and Matt is laughing and—
Then Terry feels hands around his throat, as tiny but strong fingers curl into his throat, cutting off his air supply.

WAYNE
9:17 AM
Bruce has a fleeting impression of teeth and bared claws before the giant body comes down hard on his. It’s only the reflex of a lifetime of brawls with larger, stronger opponents that saves him. He jabs outward with knees as he falls, curving to hit against the backside and shoulders while kicking up into the ribs of the animal. Bruce then thrusts the triangle between his thumb and forefinger into the dog’s throat as he boosts Ace over his head.
There’s a pained whine as the dog hits the ground, but he’s not unconscious, already struggling to his paws with the grace of a sleepwalker and determination of a piranha.
He’s just going to keep coming.
Bruce’s body screams in protest—muscles he hasn’t used in far too long, the incision from the transplant stretching—and he feels dizzy. But he forces himself to focus.
First the bats. Then Ace. Something that just affects animals?
It would certainly cause chaos, which the Joker was always trying for. But this particular trick has been done before.
The clown never revisited his jokes.
And the way Ace’s features are twisted, eyes white and sightless. When Bruce squints at the downed bats, sees that they seem paler, their faces also bent against their natural shape.
Joker toxin. It has to be.
Except, there was no delivery method and it’s not affecting Bruce. Maybe it is just animals.
He hurries toward the lab as quick as his body allows, depressing the panel in the cabinet that keeps his stock of antitoxin safe. Thumbs past vials until he has the right one, and fits it into the modified tranquilizer gun,
By the harsh panting behind him, he knows the dog is bearing down on him once again,
Calculations tear through his sluggish brain, dosages and body weight and differences between human and canine anatomy—
Ace leaps again, snapping at Bruce’s neck, and he fires, aiming for the cluster of muscles closest to the dog’s heart. He doesn’t see if it connects, forced to throw up a  fist to protect his throat.
Teeth shred his hand, sending sharp lances of pain through him, but he keeps his arm up, aiming a nerve strike near the solar plexus and kidneys.
The dog continues snorting and snapping at him for longer than he’d like, before going limp.
Bruce struggles out from beneath Ace’s weight, sparing a moment to check breathing and pulse rate and then arrange the dog into a recovery position on its right side. Then he staggers to the comms, grabbing a roll of bandages on his way.
“Terry!” he barks as he wraps his shredded hand to staunch the bleeding; he’ll need to stitch it, and soon—the blood thinners he takes won’t allow it to stop on its own.
Once at the computer, he brings up CCTV footage and any voice recordings from the last ten minutes; at the same time, he repeats, “Terry!”

MCGINNIS
9:17 AM
Terry hears the comms in the cowl go off, but it’s too far away, stuffed into his schoolbag. That, and he’s a little busy dodging his mother’s wild attempts to claw his eyes out while shaking his brother off without harming him.
Their laughter is loud and pained in his ears.
Straining, he finally manages to flip Matt onto the couch while dodging his mother’s grasping hand. He vaults across the room to his bag, digging desperately through it until his fingers close on the utility belt.
He has more than enough sedatives there to put them down. At the last second, however, he pauses, because they aren’t infected with just anything—it’s Joker toxin. Who knows what complications adding unknown sedatives could have on that.
So instead, he gabs the tiny vials he’s been carrying with him since the encounter with Tim Drake’s insane alter ego.
It’s a careful dance of evasion and trying not to break bones, avoiding his mother—and Matt, who even as some kind of mindless Joker automaton has an innate ability to evade Terry’s grasp. Eventually, he manages it and then he’s panting on the floor, mother and brother unconscious heaps beside him.
Heart still beating anxiously, he watches as their faces ease back to normal, free of the sinister rictus.
He’s already shrugging out of his coat as he reaches for the costume.
Looks like test or not, school’s not happening today.
The cowl is on now and his comm frizzes to life.
“—rry?”
“Bruce, what’s going on?” he demands. “Mom and Matt just went nuts. And their faces—it looks and acts like Joker toxin, but—”
“I know,” Bruce interrupts. “There’s no origin, no delivery system.”
“Exactly.”
Terry uses the magnification option in his mask to check his family. “If it’s not airborne, there should be injection points, but I don’t see any.” He does a sweep of the room. “There’s no vents or grates where it could have come in. Air filter's not picking up anything, either.”
“As near as I can tell, there won’t be. This is something new.”
“The word ‘new’ should never be used with the Joker.”
“Hm.”
“So why aren’t I affected?”
“I guess the dermal implant is doing its job.”
“Good thing,” Terry says, swallowing at the idea of what he might have done if hopped up on that chemical. “So, where’s it coming from?”
He grabs a pen and paper from his mothers desk and jots down a note.
“That’s what we have to figure out. In the meantime, the goods news is the usual anti-venom appears to be working. It’s just a matter of mass-producing and getting out there.”
You guys fainted from the bug going around. Got a medical alert from Mr. Wayne, had to go check on him. Don’t leave the house!
He underlines that last bit and circles it several times before signing his name.
“I’ll be back soon, I promise,” he tells them, and heads for the window, tapping his comm again. “So, what’s the ‘but’? Because with you there’s always a ‘but’.”
“But it’s not just Gotham,” Bruce says, grim. “I’m looking at CCTV feeds from Tokyo, London, New York—it’s everywhere. Satellite imaging’s showing even more conclusive data: the entire planet’s been exposed to this.”
Terry doesn’t even get a chance to swear when a new voice interjects, “And the longer you’re exposed to it, the longer it takes to recover.”

GRAYSON
9:17 AM
Dick grunts as he evades and dances out of the way of Catwoman’s doppelgangers.
“If you even do,” he adds on an exhale as one of them lands a hard blow to his chest.
There are twin intakes of breath across the line.
“Mr. Grayson?” the McGinnis kid asks, sounding choked. Dick doubts it’s about him. He caught the bit about being attacked by his family, and he knows from experience what it is to have to subdue loved ones.
“You’d think after all this time you’d eventually switch frequencies, B.”
“Nightwing,” the old man grunts, voice as inexpressive as ever. “Seems like you used the tech I sent you after all.”
“Only after I made sure you didn’t include any nano-surveillance devices.”
“You’re welcome.”
Dick rolls his eyes.
“Well, it’s working for me, but not for—” Something sharp slices across his chest, sending him flying backward. One of the doppelgänger’s grab hold of him and flips him over with the intention of sending him through the window and a fall several stories down. He recovers in midair, lands on his hands and tosses himself away from the bodies. “Hold that thought.”
He tries to find the original Black, the one who laughs and gasps for breath a millisecond before her doppelgängers. The sound is grating in his ear, echoed everywhere and drifting up from the city center below, in the apartments around him—
“Is there someone there with you?” Bruce wants to know.
“No, I’m alone in my apartment beating myself up,” Dick snaps.
“Who am I to judge what you do for fun?”
“Regular anti-toxin works on whatever this is,” McGinnis repeats like he’s trying to be helpful.
“Well, I don’t exactly carry that around,” Dick mutters, though he knows it’s in the background. Getting there will be a pain in the ass, and fighting in such close quarters with so many opponents, even if it’s technically only one…
It takes several unsuccessful feints and a few sucker-punches before he can grab hold of the original Black, holding her throat in the crook of his elbow while enduring her clones’ attempts to take chunks out of his kin.
Bruce and McGinnis are saying something—to him, to each other, he’s not sure. He blocks them out for now.
Walking backward, he keeps close to the walls of the hallway leading to the bathroom, ignoring the way Black struggles and claws against him before finally going limp.
Immediately, the doppelgängers vanish, but he knows he doesn’t have long. He practically smashes the bathroom mirror going for the anti-toxin, fits it into an injector and jams it into her thigh.
He lets her fall to the floor in an ungraceful heap, panting as he examines the bloody welts on his chest and arms.
“Wrestling with you was a lot more fun last time,” he informs the unconscious woman, before returning to his bedroom and opening the secret space in the closet behind his clothing.
His spare suit is there, and he scowls at it.
“You said this was all over the planet,” he says into the comm as he reaches for the material. “If that’s the case, we’re going to have every living thing ripping itself to pieces within the next few hours.”
“Frag,” McGinnis mutters. “I need to find Dana and Max before something happens to them.”
Predictably, Bruce says, “They’re not priority right now.”
“They’re priority for me, alright?”
“Flexible as ever, aren’t you old man?” Dick mocks.
“We have to focus our energy on reversing whatever happened,” Bruce retorts, unapologetic.
“Yeah, well, we look to our own first, Bats, or there’s no hope of fixing anything.” His tone turns sharp. “And you’d better hope Tim’s okay.”

DRAKE
9:17 AM
Tim is not okay.
He is so far from okay, he thinks he might have lost feeling in his extremities. Which is problematic, since he’s trying to fight off both a panic attack and the wild swings of his wife.
She staring down at him with that horrid grin, gripping another huge kitchen knife in hand.
Tim’s chest feels close, and he wants to throw up, but he also knows he has to help Arlene. And to do that, he needs to calm down and think logically.
There was no gas anywhere, no traps. Joker liked the kind of traps that were showy and made noise.
But there’s no weapon, no delivery system, no broken windows the toxin could have come from. It couldn’t have been the coffee, otherwise, he’d be affected as well.
Why haven’t I? Out of anyone, it should be me.
But no—the dermal implant he helped Bruce design. Apparently, it works, filtering out the toxin before it even enters the bloodstream. It had been a wing and a prayer that it would work, a failsafe only, and now that it has, he wishes he’d thought to make more than the prototypes.
One for Arlene.
“Hon, I’m real sorry about this,” he apologizes, knowing she can’t hear him now. And then he surges forward, swooping beneath the arc of the knife coming toward him, gets behind her and uses a nerve pinch to knock her to the ground.
Outside, he hears cars colliding and frantic cries, turning to laughter and then agonized shrieking.
What the hell is going on?
He carries Arlene to the couch and hurries to his study to locate this last batch of anti-toxin. When the Joker returned, he’d spent hours every day mixing it up, and though he sent most of it back to Bruce and Barbara for their stocks, he kept enough.
It’s quick work to inject his wife; it will take a little longer before she wakes up again.
That done, his brief burst of battle-calm vanishes and the spirit of Robin that prompted him to action begins to fade. He begins to shiver, swallows back a hysterical sob or giggle.
The noises from outside get louder and he sits on the couch, hauling his knees up to his chest and leaning into his wife’s shoulders. He almost relishes the pain of his joints in the unfamiliar movements, trying to counteract the legitimate terror trying to creep upon him.
His eyes catch on the red vase, broken, its rounded bottom lying among the shards. It’s the same shade as a familiar helmet.
What the hell do you think you’re doing, Replacement? Jason’s voice is back, angry and frustrated. Going to curl up and cry? The bastard wasn’t supposed to beat both of us.
Tim swallows and closes his eyes, taking a further moment to ground himself, and then goes looking for his cellphone. He’s not far gone enough to reach out to Bruce—yet—but he’s not the only one who can help.
The speed-dial to Barbara’s personal line rings out.
________________________________________________________________
GORDON
9:17 AM
The gunshot echoes, but it isn’t from the lieutenant’s gun. Instead, a stray shot from behind them both barrels through Davis’ body and into the wall. He crumples, and Barbra whirls around, taking in the sight of the entire police force in the pit, dissolving into madness.
They’re all crazed grins and mad giggling, grabbling with each other and shooting their service weapons with wild abandon.
They’ve all been infected.
Her phone is ringing—not the office, but her cellphone. She spares a moment to see that it’s from Tim, but she can’t answer him right now. Not with the chaos threatening to destroy her building.
Hurrying around the pit, dodging grabbing arms and bodies being thrown in her path, she makes a beeline for the master computer responsible for all automated functions of the department. Fingers flying, she enacts the protocol for emergency safety.
It was original installed to stop another massacre from having in the middle of the police stronghold, and as far as she’s concerned, that’s exactly what’s about to happen if she doesn’t act fast.
“Sorry, boys,” she mutters, opening the panel hiding the lever, and yanks it down.
Instantly blue sparks explode all around the pit, creating a facsimile of a faraday cage. The charge isn’t enough to kill, just to incapacitate; every man and woman in uniform drops to the ground, stunned.
The sudden silence in the wake of the laughter is chilling, but not complete; in the offices and on the floors above she still hears signs of struggle, meaning all she’s managed is a brief reprieve.
Her cellphone is ringing again; this time she takes the call.
“Barbara, it’s not me!” he gasps right away, voice tight with fear. “It has to be a copycat, I swear it’s not met!”
“Never even thought it was,” she informs him honestly.
“What’s going on?!”
“I don’t know. Going to find out.”
“All I can think is that whatever this is has to be airborne.”
“Like a neurochemical attack?”
“Actually, I think it might be more like a virus. Some bacterial strains are still able to evade air filtration technology,” Tim says, taking measured breaths. Having to solve a problem has always been the best way to keep him calm. “Otherwise the city sensors would have detected it.”
“Unless it was a toxin designed specifically to evade those sensors.”
“It’s possible…”
But he still sounds preoccupied.
“Well, it’s a starting point,” she says. “Thanks, Tim. Is Arlene alright?”
“Knocked out on the couch,” he sighs. “I’ve dosed her. The usual strain against Joker toxin seems to be effective, at least.”
“Good to know.” Something outside explodes on the street, and she winces. “Listen, Tim, we’re going to handle it. Just stay put and take care of yourself and Arlene. Call me if there’s anything, but otherwise, keep the line clear.”
“I know. It’s everywhere, isn’t it?”
“It looks like it.” She hangs up, dials Nissa first, but the heir to her cowl doesn’t pick up.
Crown Point’s probably a war zone. Can’t think about that right now.
Next, the Cave. Just as predictably, he picks up on the first ring.
“What the hell is going on, Bruce?”

WAYNE
9:20 AM
“At this point, your guess is as good as mine,” he replies, forwarding the call to the Bat-Computer.
Barbara’s voice is tense. “Is it really him again?”
“I don’t know.”
He navigates through multiple windows on the computer, examining the security footage of the chaos erupting around the globe. Through the comm in his ear, he hears Dick muttering something about his suit, while Terry keeps him updated on his flyover of the city.
Apparently, there are a lot of people falling or jumping off high-rises.
Bruce has a blood sample from Ace in the corner of the screen, running a diagnostic to find any clue how the toxin was spread.
There are differences in composition, which accounts for it working on the animals.
“I’ve got a program tracing the origin, but that’s taking a backseat to deploying an antidote,” he informs her. “I’m synthesizing it using Tim’s program from the last time.”
“Is it just me, or are there too many ‘last times’?” Terry wants to know, sounding winded.
Bruce ignores that, addresses Barbara, “I’ll send the first wave of Bat-drones to emergency service hubs.”
“That’s appreciated since I’ve got a precinct full of unconscious cops right now.”
“Emergency protocol worked, then?”
“Don’t be smug. It’s not a good look on you.”
“Once we’ve restored emergency services, I’ll send a second contingent to help the rest of Gotham.”
And then, somehow, the entire planet.
“But is it him?” Barbara asks.
“No. He’s dead.”
“I don’t think that’s what she meant,” Terry says. “Did the Joker really set all this up? Before he died?”
Bruce glances at another small window on-screen, where he captured a recording of the video that started all of this. “Judging by the resolution, the video footage is archival. That’s definitely him. I’d say it’s from forty years ago. Someone’s remastered it, but there are tells.”
“So why’s it being released now? He couldn’t have known exactly when he was going to die.”
“I suspect something specific happened to trigger its release. Some criterion was met.”
“So the Joker is definitely not back, but this is definitely his work,” Barbara concludes with a sigh. “Any idea on how to stop it?”
“Still looking.”
“Tim thinks it’s airborne. Like a virus.”
Bruce’s fingers pause in their typing, a sudden wave of concern washing over him. “Is he—?”
“He’s okay,” Barbara says. “Shaken, but he’ll hold up.”
Bruce nods to himself, tabling his relief to concentrate on the current conundrum.
“Batman, while I’m perfecting and sending out the antidote, patrolling. Help where you can.” To Barbara, “He’ll need backup.”
“That’s going to be hard since I just had to tase everyone here. I don’t want to know what’s going on with the officers that were patrolling outside.”
Law enforcement is trigger-happy on a normal day; we both know that means there’s going to be a lot of police-related deaths at the end of this thing.
“How much anti-toxin do you keep at the precinct? Didn’t Tim send you a batch recently?”
“Still probably not enough for everyone on the force.”
“Doesn’t matter. Inoculate everyone you can; once I get more of it spread around the city, there’s going to be even greater chaos. Right now, the population is mindlessly violent—once their wits come back, that’s when the real violence starts.”
“Hm.” She doesn’t argue; she knows it’s true.
“This is going to take as many people as we have to pitch in. Keep a comm on you—I know you have one on you. If some poor Jokerized fool takes out the power grid, you’ll lose access to all conventional communication.”
“We have back-ups, you know,” Barbara says dryly, but he hears her shifting around and then the squeaking feedback as she puts a comm in her ear and hangs up the phone.
“Not as good as mine.”
“So what exactly are you expecting I do in the meantime?” Terry wants to know. “Patrol is kind of a broad term.”
“Try to keep the peace as well as possible.”
“…I’d think you were joking, except you don’t have a sense of humor.”
“Oh, he does, kid,” Dick remarks. “But if you haven’t found it yet, better pray you don’t.”

MCGINNIS
9:25 AM
Terry dodges what feels like the hundredth car that’s flipped over an overpass, only just managing to get the passengers out and back on the ground. They immediately start grabbing at his throat and trying to gouge his eyes and he’s forced to take off again.
So far, the short trip between his apartment and the school has taken three times as long as it should have.
And every second means Dana and Max could be…
He doesn’t want to think about it.
Down below, people are actually tearing each other to pieces, scratching and biting and using everyday detritus to whale on each other. There are two many for him to stop them all, and the fact he’s all-but useless until Bruce manages to deploy the antidote doesn’t make him feel any better.
“This is insane.”
“I believe that was the point," Bruce grunts.
“Even if I had enough anti-toxin for the entire city, this isn’t exactly a one-man job,” Terry complains.
“In case you haven’t noticed, you’re not the only one still cognisant.”
“Yeah, but that’s still just a handful of us. And if this stuff is in the air, even any anti-toxin we have is only going to be temporary.”
“Once we figure out what’s delivering this toxin or virus, it’s just a matter of tweaking it to deploy the antidote instead. Until then, be grateful your device is working properly.”
“Is there anyone else out there with one of these, except your chosen?”
“Anyone who had access to the anti-toxin and was able to dose themselves before it took over.”
Terry snorts. “So, maybe three people? Great. I feel so comforted.”
“You shouldn’t. They’ll be out of commission for a while.”
“You’re such an optimist. What about Su—”
“He’s compromised.”
“Compromised like…?”
“Trust me when I say it’s not something you ever want to encounter.”
Terry shivers at the idea of a Jokerized Superman. “I can’t even picture that. I wouldn’t even think it was possible. How did you—?”
“Dumb luck.”
“Frag.”
“Just don’t attract his attention and hope you don’t need to use the last resort.”
Meaning Kryptonite.
“And how do you propose that?”
“Don’t call for help.”
“Of course,” Terry sighs, and then grumbles, “This is not my best day ever.”
It’s another ten minutes of fighting through the smoke of several wrecked cars, stopping a bunch of thugs from beating on a frazzled, confounded kid crying despite her Glasgow smile, before he makes it to Hamilton Hill High.
Probably going to need some help, he decides, remotely activating the Batmobile’s onboard computer to track his location.
It might as well be a warzone, the way the staff and students—kids he’s been in school with for years—are attacking each other. Everyone’s bleeding in some way, a number of bodies litter the ground, some still twitching, some not. Terry tries not to think too closely about it as he speeds through the hallways to his second-period classroom.
Inside, the light panels have been destroyed, creating a strobe light effect that Terry winces at. He adjusts the screen in his mask to account for the light, and looks desperately around.
The teacher’s dead, bleeding from what looks like a shard of someone’s tablet shoved through his throat. His classmates are grouped off in individual melees, all of them laughing hysterically as they beat on each other or take blows.
Chelsea Cunningham straddles Nelson Nash and repeatedly strikes his head against the ground, giggling shrilly as his blood spatters her once crisp white shirt. Nelson’s not quite laughing anymore, making choked-off noises like he’s trying to breathe.
Terry doesn’t think twice about using two of his anti-toxins on both of them—it’s about all he can do—before moving on.
Dana and Max are near the back, seemingly in the midst of trying to choke the life out of one another. Dana has several patches of hair torn out, and Max has an ugly gash down her cheeks from Dana’s nails.
“Okay, time to break up this girl fight,” he declares, materializing behind them and knocking them both out before inoculating them.
The other students have taken notice of him by now, and begin to close in.
“And that’s my exit,” he murmurs, hoisting a girl over each shoulder.
There’s an explosion beside him, as a blast of concentrated fire opens a hole in the ceiling. A cord extends downward and he steps into the foothold, holding tight to his best friend and his girlfriend as the Batmobile yanks them upward and away from the high school.
“Oof,” he mutters once inside the cockpit, laying the girls gently in the passenger seat.
“Everyone alright?” Bruce asks.
“They’ll live.”
“Good. Time to get back to work.”
“On it.” Terry jumps out of the car and hovers beside it for a moment, keying in commands to take it back to the Batcave. “Special delivery. Maybe you can figure out how this thing is spreading to human victims and keep them safe.”
“We’re not a relief center,” Bruce grumps.
“Tough. I’m not leaving them to get ripped apart or rip each other apart here, or in their homes.”
“Then drop them off with your mother and brother.”
“No time to double back,” Terry replies. “And the Cave’s the safest place within two hundred miles. They know about you anyway, so deal with it.”
He considers the school beneath him and dives back in, trying to see how many he can incapacitate before they all kill each other.

GRAYSON
9:30 AM
“Think I’m really starting to like this kid,” Dick tells Bruce as he digs through his medicine cabinet again. A medicine cabinet that’s more of a fully stocked home hospital.
Old habits die hard.
“Where the hell are the reinforcements?” he demands. “You know, the ones hanging out on high?”
“Watchtower’s dark.”
Dick pauses; that actually startles him. “Even for you? How’s that possible? You put so many backdoors into that system.”
“Hence my concern.”
Dick finds the tube he’s looking for, good for a concentrated shot of adrenaline and makes his way back to Black and doses her.
There’s a beat, and then she gasps awake, shooting into a sitting position.
“Sorry,” he says, “but the city’s going to hell. There’s no time to play Sleeping Beauty. Suit up.”
“Sure know how to show a girl a good time,” she groans, accepting his outstretched hand.
"What can I say, I'm the life of the party." While she shimmies into her clothes and checks her gear, Dick asks Bruce, “Speaking of your ‘chosen’, who else have you immunized, besides you, me, the kid and Babs?”
“Who are you calling a kid?” McGinnis demands.
Bruce ignores him. “In an ideal world? The Family.”
“You mean the Family you’ve pissed off and distanced yourself from for the past forty years? That Family? Hell of a time to reach out.” Dick grunts. “What about—”
“Red Robin is fine.”
Dick huffs out a bitter chuckle. “Now there’s a handle I haven’t heard in a while.”
“No real names on the comms.”
“I’m pretty sure anyone we’d have to worry about names with is roaming the streets laughing their heads off right now,” McGinnis says. "Maybe literally."
“Kid’s got a point,” Dick says. “Speaking of people roaming. Who else do we have in our corner? And by that I mean, who’s not dead, geriatric, off-world or part of the Jokerized masses?”
“Anyone with a superior metabolism or who can burn off the toxin before it takes hold. Flash is working Central City right now, but she’s got her hands full. Same for Static out in Dakota City.”
“That's it? What about everyone else?”
“You don’t want to know.”
“And the Justice League still isn’t answering.”
“No.”
Which is…not good.
Black reappears from the bedroom, mask on and hands on her hips. “You ready to roll, soldier?”
“Make sure you take some anti-toxin with you. What I dosed you with will eventually run out, and I’d rather not have to worry about you going after me when you’re supposed to be watching my back.
“I’d love to know how I went from a thief to saving the city on a regular basis,” she quips.
“The first Catwoman used to ask that all that time."

GORDON
9:30 AM
“Whoever’s doing this was thinking ahead,” Barbara says as she goes from officer to officer and injects them with the anti-toxin. “Way ahead.”
She wasn’t kidding when she said there wasn’t enough for the entire force; as it is she’ll be lucky if it’s enough for the ones in the bullpen. The rest are going to have to be put in cells until help arrives.
“Hm.”
“But it also…” she trails off.
“What?”
“It doesn’t feel like the Joker. Besides the video and the toxin, I mean. Other than that…”
“I was thinking the same thing,” Bruce agrees. “The theatricality is him, but the rest…I’m still analyzing the video clip for clues.”
Barbara purses her lips. It should be a relief to hear that it’s not him, but it’s not. The legend of the Joker makes even his imitators a force to be reckoned with.
Just as the first of her officers begin to stir, she pulls out her cellphone and runs an encryption program to secure the line. It’s a program Maxine Gibson set her up with when she expressed a need to get in touch during emergency situations...especially when the new Batgirl doesn’t want her to.
This time, the line connects to the biometric communicator Nissa always carries on her. Barbara waits until her protégé’s blasé voicemail starts playing and listens through the recording.
“I know you’ve probably been hit by the toxin,” she says after the shrill beep, “but that’s going to be dealt with soon. The minute you’re conscious, get your gear on and get your butt into that city. Even if this all gets fixed in the next ten minutes, Gotham’s going to be pulling herself apart for days. We need all hands. Consider this your debutante ball.”
She disconnects and then reaches for her service weapon, checking her ammo, and mentally decides what orders she’s going to give the men and women getting back on their feet. None of them know what’s going on, and it’s not going to be an easy explanation.
Her eyes fall upon the photo of Sam on her desk, and she swallows. There are still two more calls she needs to make before she goes out on the street.
“Sam? When you get this…Just know that everything’s going to be alright. I’ll see you at dinner, hon…”

DRAKE
9:35 AM
When the phone rings again, Tim jumps, having forgotten it was in his hand. He’s been trying not to twitch at every sound from outside when he’s not checking his wife to make sure she’s still breathing.
He knows she is—he’s watching her chest rise and fall—but he keeps having visions of her seizing and dying on his watch.
“Babs?” he chokes.
“It’s me,” she confirms. “The Bats are working on a toxin and doing crowd control. You should have drones incoming within the half-hour.”
Tim exhales. “That’s a relief at least.”
“How are you holding up?”
“I’m managing,” he replies. “Arlie should be waking up soon. Then we’re getting the hell out of Gotham supposing I have to hitchhike.”
“It won’t help,” Barbara replies grimly. “From what Bruce says, this is happening all over. There’s nowhere to escape to.” Tim’s heart sinks. “Believe it or not, Gotham’s going to be one of the safe zones for a while.”
“Gotham is never safe,” he deadpans.
“I know. Tim…I’m sorry you have to go through this, with everything you’ve been through. The best thing for you to do is batten down the hatches. Stay put and stay safe—or as safe as you can manage. I’ve got some of my force up and about again. As soon as I can spare the manpower, I’ll send someone over to protect you.”
“Yeah…”
Tim stays still for a while after she hangs up, staring down at the phone in deep thought.
Something about that bothers him, niggling at some long-buried part of him.
Didn’t you used to make a big deal about people trying to protect you? Jason’s voice wonders. When did you become such a burden, Timbers?
“About the time a lunatic crown tried to lobotomize me,” he mutters to no one.
Maybe. But just because you’re out of the game, doesn’t mean you’re completely useless. You’re not Bruce…but you’ve still got contingencies on contingencies.
He wants to argue that—ignoring the fact he’d be arguing with himself because Jason’s not here—but then he really thinks about it.
He knows his house isn’t fortified, isn’t defensively in any way against his Jokerized neighbors or whatever other chaotic groups will emerge as the Bats try to spread the anti-toxin.
But…I still know where all the safehouses are.
The ones that were built to stand the test of time and outlived the breaking of team bonds. He’s thinking of one in particular—his old haunt beneath his former apartment in the old theater district. The apartment was demolished ages ago, bought up with the rest of the block and replaced with a high-rise parking garage.
But the Nest beneath it was never found, and there are still one or two secret entrances to get in. If there’s nowhere safe in the world to flee, then he must look for safety in the city he knows.
Maybe…I can be Red Robin one last time.
He gets up, plans coalescing in his mind.
As soon as Arlene wakes, they’re leaving.

Doomed & Stoned Turns Five!
Coinciding with Doomed & Stoned's fifth anniversary, Todd Severin of The Ripple Effect talks to Editor in Chief Billy Goate about this bitchin' lil blog, from its inauspicious beginning in the summer of 2013 as a simple social media platform to bring together lovers of the doom-stoner sound to dabbling in its own music festival, a massive compilation series, podcasting, and of course album reviews and interviews. Touching on both the joys and challenges of coordinating a multinational team of contributors, Billy discusses battles with burnout, the excitement of new discoveries, and the struggle to stay on top of an exponentially mushrooming music scene.

Let's start with the obvious: why Doomed & Stoned?
The name Doomed & Stoned isn't really meant to be edgy, though it does have a nice ring to it. It came to me as a simple way to sum up the heavy vibe that is the heart and soul of our writing: doom metal and stoner rock. I consider those to be the enduring styles of true metal and classic rock 'n' roll, best encapsulated by the music of Black Sabbath. Sabbath played music that was famously downtuned, slow, plodding, and somber, documented so incredibly by those first four albums. Then they had their up-tempo swings that tapped into the feel-good era of the 1970s, "Hole In The Sky" and "The Wizard" comes immediately to mind, as does "Sabbra Cadabra" and a number of songs on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973) -- such a forward-looking album. Black Sabbath is the quintessential doomed and stoned band and it has been, broadly speaking, the stylistic portfolio of music we've decided to hone in on for this venture.

As soon as I was turned on to the doom-stoner vibe, I began to notice things happening into my own backyard of Portland, Oregon. At the time, Oregon’s proudest exports were bands like Witch Mountain, Yob, Lord Dying, Danava, and a handful of others that were being signed left and right to labels like Relapse and Profound Lore. Well, I just started documenting everything, because I felt there was something really special happening here, much as there'd been a magical vibe about our sister city Seattle in the '90s when my family had moved up here from East Texas.
It all began with me showing up randomly at shows and shooting live footage, I believe the first was the Portland Metal Winter Olympics in 2014, then Hoverfest. Initially, no one knew who the hell this guy was showing up with his camera, but gradually I became more accepted by the community, which opened up opportunities for doing interviews, album reviews, and a big 75-band compilation of the Portland scene, which kicked off this massive series of scene comps that many know Doomed & Stoned best for.

What gave you this crazy idea of promoting the scenes to the rest of the world?
Doomed & Stoned originated out of a frustration I had in sharing discoveries like Windhand, Saint Vitus, Sleep, and Goatsnake with my metal friends. Many wouldn’t give these bands a chance or listened for half-a-minute and gave up. Surely, I thought to myself, there must be others out there who were just as in love with the doom-stoner genre as I am. It wasn’t long until I met Melissa Marie in a metal forum. I told her what I was planning, she was down, and together we burrowed in the heavy underground and discovered a whole community there welcoming us. Melissa was my first contributor and along the way, we made acquaintances with aspiring writers and photographers who really caught the vision and volunteered to document their own scenes. She's since become my executive editor and the organizer of our flagship festival in Indianapolis.

Just like that, the Doomed & Stoned team was born. Roman Tamayo joined the team shortly afterwards, now the Editor of Doomed & Stoned Latinoamérica and I started meeting people from all over who wanted to contribute an album review here, a bit of concert footage there. It all happened very naturally and organically, fueled by simple passion, a mutual love of fuzzy, downtuned riffs, and a desire to document the energy and excitement of what we were all witnessing -- Demon Lung in Las Vegas, Orchid in San Francisco, Pale Divine in Pennsylvania, Pilgrim in Rhode Island. It didn't take us long to discover was going on in the rest of the world and it blew our ever-lovin' minds.
With the explosion in blogging and desktop publishing, we gradually discovered there was a loose network of folks covering the doom-stoner scene all over the world, too. Most of them have been very friendly and we’ve even had the opportunity to collaborate with folks like The Sludgelord, Outlaws of the Sun, The Ripple Effect, Invisible Oranges, Revolver, Blabbermouth, and so many more. There are others that wouldn’t acknowledge our existence -- still won't to this day -- I’m guessing because we were viewed as unwelcome competition in an already small market with a tight circle of friendships. The thing is, we never really wanted to compete with anyone; we just wanted an outlet to share our love of music. It’s hard not to be competitive sometimes, of course. Competition can be positive in that it inspires you to push yourself, try new things, and grow.

That said, since none of the 20+ contributors to Doomed & Stoned are doing this full-time, we want ultimately just want to have fun and you can’t enjoy the ride if you’re constantly trying to outdo this site or that. We found our niche in digging into local scenes and telling the stories of the bands who may very well be the next Sleep or Windhand a decade or two into the future.
We're now in the fifth year of our existence and I feel we’re becoming known as people willing to give bands and their local scenes the kind of in-depth coverage they deserve. That speaks to our motto: “Bringing you the music and the stories of the heavy underground, with an emphasis on the Sabbath Sound and local scene coverage -- by the underground, for the underground.”

How has the scene grown and changed in the intervening years?
Well, since those bright-eyed early days, the doom-stoner scene has absolutely exploded. We were lucky enough to time our entry, purely by happenstance, to ride that wave just as it was nearing its crest. Right now, the scene is at least twice as big as it was five years ago and it’s becoming practically impossible to listen to all the new albums coming out, even if we limit the consideration to just doom metal, or even a subgenre of doom like blackened doom or death doom. It becomes a matter of practicality to prioritize those albums that are brought to your attention by PR firms and record labels, but I always remember that some of our greatest discoveries have been unsigned bands.
Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to discover bands like Disenchanter, Holy Grove, Troll, Year of the Cobra, Toke, and dozens of others that have since risen to international prominence. Just to know you were there the moment their demo showed up on Bandcamp. You were among the first to listen to their self-produced CD on the commute to work. You were there to witness them opening for a touring headliner. You wrote their first review. You made that social media post that sparked a fire of interest. You recommended them to one of your overseas blogger pals. All of that is tremendously gratifying to be a part of.

We're all the product of our musical past. What's your musical history? First album you ever bought? First musical epiphany moment? First album that terrified the hell out of you?
I was raised by parents who came of age in the ‘50s and ‘60s, so I was exposed initially to a lot of late-‘60s rock, big band jazz, and later the ‘70s radio pop. Mom was fond of playing three classical music albums with a mix of music by Mozart, Beethoven, and Rossini, and that left a very powerful impression on me early on. She also was fond of Olivia Newton John, so I have “Jolene” permanently etched on my psyche and every so often vainly attempt singing it in the shower.
My first vinyl was the Ghostbusters soundtrack, which dad bought for me, and it unleashed a curiosity for the popular music of the ‘80s. Like a lot of my friends at school, I was nuts about Michael Jackson and I remember asking dad if I could have one of those swank red jackets that he wore so famously in “Thriller” (I was denied, though I did get quite good at grade school moonwalking). I distinctly remember the day my family got cable TV for the first time and with it MTV, which brought the music of Metallica, Boy George, Madonna, Aerosmith, and Run-DMC into our conservative Texas household.
It didn’t last long, because somewhere in the mid-‘80s, my family got caught up in the whole “Satanic Panic” movement. They started monitoring my listening habits vigilantly. One day, for instance, my mom was horrified to find her ten-year-old boy singing along to “Nobody’s Fool” by Cinderella during Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 show. From that point on, both rock and metal were banned from the house and my radio was confiscated. It was too late, though, because I was hooked – particularly by metal. Something about it has always moved me in a way that only classical music has matched. My first metal album, which I purchased in secret, was ‘Appetite for Destruction’ by Guns ‘n’ Roses – which at the time represented the pinnacle of late ‘80s heavy metal. People need to understand how revolutionary it was to hear something that “hard” on mainstream radio and MTV. I listened to it and ‘Lies’ incessantly on my Walkman and continued listening clandestinely to FM hard rock and heavy metal.
Since I couldn’t listen to it openly, I started developing an interest in the darker side of classical music, the moodier pieces by Beethoven, Liszt, and Scriabin, and took up playing the piano around 13. My family was supportive of that talent and I would spend hours and hours a day for years playing the piano in solitude. That was my first introduction, in kernel form, to “doom” – especially late Beethoven, when he started growing deaf and began expressing his frustration and despair more poignantly through dark tones. Franz Liszt, later in life, experienced so much tragedy that he begin to write very bleak, obscure music and was one of the first to experiment with atonality.
It wouldn’t be until my college days that I’d come face-to-face with doom at a Saint Vitus show in Portland. From that moment forward, I knew I’d discovered my soul food. Doom metal made an immediate connection, as it addressed the fucked up nature of life and society in a way that felt authentic to me. It wasn’t just anger. It was dark, slow despair and even a blithe kind of acceptance to it all. It was refreshing to have those feelings mapped out in song like that. That triggered a wave of discovery that led to Usnea, Cough, Pilgrim, Demon Lung, Serpentine Path, Undersmile, and others that are now staples of my musical diet.

What do you see happening in the music scene today, good and bad?
More people are digging to the doom-stoner sound and the scene is growing exponentially. The internet has democratized music in a way that has made it easier than ever for bands to form, record, and share their music. It’s also made it much, much harder for a band to get discovered. We’re simply oversaturated by it all. We’re reaching peak information and many listeners have just stopped exploring altogether. I think there was a study done some years back that said by the late-20’s/early-30’s the average metal listener typically hardens in their musical tastes. I don’t know how true that is still, but I know that I’ve been increasingly suffering from listening fatigue. 2014 was the last year I felt on top of it all. 2015 was explosive and every year since has found me woefully behind in my listening. I’m still digging through the rubble and discovering incredible records that I share now and then in a series of short reviews I call, “Doomed Discoveries.”
Among the trends I’ve seen in our scene in particular is the increase in female-fronted bands (which we tried to document in our compilation, The Enchanter’s Ball) along with more experimentation with genre blending. It’s becoming harder to find bands who traffic in traditional doom, but that’s fine because I think we all needed more diversity in our playlist to keep us from becoming jaded. For a while, it seemed every other band was “witch” this and “black” that. I’m the last person to judge a band by its name, but it was leading to a ton of criticism from fans -- to the point I’d have a hard time getting doom-stoner listeners to take a chance with a newer band that had the word “wizard” in their name. One thing that seems to be a theme of the doom-stoner scene is a continual drive for excellence and evolution. On the negative side, we tend to expect more of our heroes, as a result -- which is why bands like The Sword and Electric Wizard have been criticized for producing music that would have otherwise excited us if they were a brand new band.
youtube
Holy Grove at Hoverfest (Film by Billy Goate)
What's been your all-time greatest "find"? That band you "discovered" before anyone else and started the word spreading?
It’s hard to pinpoint one band, but I’ve been instrumental in boosting the music of Holy Grove, Disenchanter, Troll, and Year of the Cobra -- all bands from out of the Pacific Northwest. Initially they were promoted through Doomed & Stoned and then found their way to small-to-medium sized record labels and festivals. Over half of the bands that played the Vinyl Stage at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in the inaugural year of Psycho Las Vegas were my direct recommendations. Though I was less involved in the following year, Psycho Las Vegas booked most of the bands that appeared at Doomed & Stoned Festival, such as Merlin, Toke, and Youngblood Supercult. It was a huge confidence booster in Doomed & Stoned’s ability to be a “taste tester.” This is not to say our taste in bands has always been picked up by festivals or record labels. The scene is getting bigger and out of necessity bands have to diversify their reach through a multiplicity of media outlets, because you never know who will read that one feature at the right time and dig your sound. Besides, there’s too much music in the doom-stoner subgenre for any one site to cover right now, so there are plenty of great recommendations coming from a number of amazing blogs and webzines.
What's the last album to grab you by the throat and insist you listen?
Definitely ‘Celestial Cemetery’ (2017) by Purple Hill Witch. I was only a nominal fan of their first album, but their second one was quite convincing, emotionally. There’s an underlying sadness to the record that appeals to me as a person who has long battled depression.
Celestial Cemetery by Purple Hill Witch
What's the hardest thing you encounter in promoting shows?
Convincing people that live music is worth leaving the comfort of our homes to experience, to say nothing of many benefits that come from connecting others in the underground music community. These days, we tend to value how conveniently something can be delivered to us. Audio books have replaced the need to sit and read (and collect printed media), our homes have become veritable theaters so no need to go out for movies anymore, and streaming high-definition music makes us feel like we’re in some sense getting the real deal.
Of course, those of us who go out to shows know there’s just no substitute for the excitement, energy, and sound of a well-produced live show, especially in a small venue. This is to say nothing of the community that comes with it. My best friendships in the scene have come about because I chose to breach my comfort zone and venture out to a show, sometimes merely on a whim. With that said, I admit I struggle with convincing myself to go out. It’s the introvert in me, I suppose. However, I have a saying that I try to live by: “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”

If you could write a 1,000 word essay on one song, which one would it be, and why? What makes that song so important?
Funny, I actually did write a 1,000+ word essay on Cough’s “Possession” -- the only song I’ve been moved to write an entire piece about so far. I think it’s because it spoke to me during a time in my life where I was feeling such raw, charged emotion and witnessing a personal transformation from being a happy-go-lucky, easy-going dude, to someone emptied of hope and weighted down by a very nihilistic outlook and pessimistic thinking. This was, in turn, keeping me more closed off from other people, because my trust level was at an all-time low.
I’ve always valued music for its ability to commiserate with me in my circumstances. During Basic Training it was Superunknown and Down on the Upside by Soundgarden. In my college days, it was Alice in Chain’s last album just prior to the death of Layne Staley, which fans nicknamed Tripod. In 2016, Cough returned after a long absence, released Still They Pray, and headlined the first ever Doomed & Stoned Festival in Indianapolis. It was a year of transition for me with a lot of upheaval in my personal life and “Possession” seemed to capture my inner storm perfectly, which inspired me to write a few words about it.
Give us three bands that we need to keep our eyes out for.
White Wail: The grooviest psychedelics this side of Berlin are nested right here in Yob country, my hometown of Eugene, Oregon. White Wail is best described as part-Graveyard, part-Radio Moscow, with a special kind of DIY electricity that has made them hands down one of the most entertaining live acts in the region. Their upcoming second album is going to put them on the map for many people, I predict.
I by White Wail
Reptile Master: Norwegian doom-sludge clan with two guitars, two basses, a drum, and one unhinged vocalist. You’ll find none fiercer. “The Sorcerer’s Weed” (opening number off their first LP, In The Light of a Sinking Sun) is positively frightening. I can feel its seething rage filling up my chest cavity like pneumonia every time I listen to it. I believe they’re expecting a new album out in the first quarter of 2019, if not sooner, and I can't wait!
Chrome Ghost: The ultimate contrast of light and dark come to us from a relatively unknown band in Roseville, California. The secret sauce here involves incredible vocal harmonies pitted against massive, crunchy riffs, something that’s done very effectively in their recent EPs, ‘The Mirror’ (2018) and ‘Reflection Pool’ (2017). Now, they just need to take this show on the road so the world can get better acquainted with them.

Tell us about your personal music collection. Vinyl? CD? What's your prized possession?
People think I have a huge vinyl collection, but mine is quite modest, really. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have a bigger collection and show it off, but unfortunately, I haven’t a lot of money to put into it, really. My most prized records come from bands I’ve supported from their earliest stages, like Holy Grove, Menin, Soom, or Vokonis. CDs have come to dominate my collection, not so much by choice, but quite a few promos are sent to me that way. Mostly, I have a vast digital collection that takes up almost six terabytes of data. Since I’m doing a lot of podcasting, this allows me the easiest point of access to put together my mixes for The Doomed & Stoned Show.
youtube
BelzebonG at Psycho Las Vegas (Film by Billy Goate)
What is it about this particular type of heavy music that makes it mean so much to you?
To me, doom metal and stoner rock has incredible staying power. It’s something I can listen to over and over again without growing weary of it. Add to that the fact bands in this genre take so much care in crafting their live sound and you can go to any doom-stoner show knowing you’re going to have an incredible time, perhaps even walk away with a better experience than the record gave you. I was constantly disappointed by the concert experiences I had while immersed in mainstream metal. It just never sounded as good as the records did. With doom-stoner music, my experience has largely been that a band's show can, and often does, transcend their studio recordings. It’s just the ethic of our scene; we're fanatical about sound.
Tumblr media
With BelzebonG
What makes it all worthwhile for you?
That's a really good question. My philosophy is that as long as we’re all still having fun, it’s worth it to keep doing Doomed & Stoned. With that said, it can be very demanding and stressful, especially as we’re increasingly turned to by bands, labels, and PR firms to host track and album premieres. The gratification of a piece well done -- whether by me or by one of my team members -- is ultimately what keeps me going day-to-day. I find a lot of joy in developing talent and even helping writers and photographers hone their craft, gain greater name recognition, and develop the confidence to even branch out on their own as freelancers. Several have gotten gigs with larger outlets like Noisey due to their work here and that just blows my mind.
When Melissa first started, she wasn’t confident at all that she could do an interview. Next thing you know, she’s interviewing Wino, negotiating contracts with promoters, booking venues, and organizing a music festival with international acts. I’ve very proud of the team and everyone who has been a part of it, if only for a season. I'd add to that my relationships with growing record labels and ambitious promoters, who I've been able work with to get bands like Tombstones, BelzebonG, Spelljammer, Vokonis, Cardinals Folly over here to play for the first time in the United States.
Tumblr media
With Disenchanter
How would your life be different if you weren't spreading the word about music?
I suppose I’d be spending more time playing the piano, something I’ve neglected more than I’d like to admit since starting Doomed & Stoned. There are some gnarly pieces by Beethoven, Liszt, Scriabin, Godowsky, and Prokofiev that I've half-chewed, just waiting for me pick them back up again. Either way, I don’t think I can stay passively involved in music. I have to be playing it or writing about it, preferably both.
youtube
Usnea play 'Random Cosmic Violence' (Film by Billy Goate)
Ever been threatened by a band or a ravenous fan?
No, but I’ve been doggedly pursued on Facebook by overly enthusiastic bands trying to get me to review their albums. What they don’t realize is that I’ve got a very heavy editing backlog -- it takes at least 2 hours and more commonly 4, 6 or even 8 hours –- to prep a feature length piece for publication. To review a record, I need even more time to let it soak in. I have to find something in it that connects with me on an emotional or at least an intellectual level or I can’t write about it. Because of that, I don’t write very many reviews a years. Maybe a half-dozen traditional, track-by-track reviews, though I do try to write at least one short review a week on our Facebook page.
Part of the blessing and the curse of doing this as a hobby, as opposed to full-time, is I don’t have a lot of opportunity to hear gossip, get into interpersonal dramas, know who's not speaking to whom -- that kind of thing. With that said, I really wish I could spend more time responding to every message I receive and developing deeper level friendships. Perhaps in time I will. My work schedule is so packed right now that it’s very hard for me to tear away and just relax and get to know people. On the positive side, it does save me from a lot of inter-scene conflict and allows me to be more of a neutral party when issues arise between bands, venues, promoters, forums, or fans.

Saint Vitus Live in Portland (Film by Billy Goate)
In the end, what would you like to have accomplished, or be remembered for?
I’m hoping we can be remembers for documenting this special era in heavy music history. I want to get better at showcasing the bands in their scenes and telling their stories, just like the writers and photographers of the Seattle grunge era were able to capture the imagination of the world with the Nirvana-Soundgarden-AIC-Pearl Jam vibe of that scene in the early-to-mid ‘90s -- what the 1996 documentary Hype! captured so well. I also hope I’ll be remembered for writing interesting, engaging, and relatable music reviews that aren’t pretentious crap. That’s still a work in progress!

Many people may not realize the hours you devote to what you do for little or no pay. Is there a day job? If so, how do you find the balance?
This is most certainly not a day job. I have a full time job that I work 40-50 hours a week and I do Doomed & Stoned in the evenings and weekends. Right now, I’m not doing very good with the balance, to be honest. I’m an unrepentant workaholic, if I’m being honest with myself. That said, every other weekend, my mind and body revolt and refuse to allow me to do anything except sleep or just lay around watching movies or doing normal things like, you know, mowing the lawn. If I could will it, I wouldn't sleep more than four hours a night, hit every show that comes to town, review every new release, put out a podcast every week, edit every article within a few days of it being submitted to me. In other words, I'd manage Doomed & Stoned as if it were a full-scale entertainment website. However, I have to remind myself that I started this to build community and to have fun, so it’s okay to operate on a different model.

What's next? Any new projects?
This year, we’re on a roll with our compilations, thanks to some wonderful organizers who are embedded in their local scenes and are good at rounding up tracks from all the participating bands. We’ve released Doomed & Stoned in Ireland, Doomed & Stoned in Philadelphia, and Doomed & Stoned in New Zealand, Doomed & Stoned in South Africa, Doomed & Stoned in Sweden, and we're coming up on Doomed & Stoned in Deutschland, and our fifth anniversary compilation, Doomed & Stoned in Portland III.
Other than that, we’re in the third year of our flagship festival, Doomed & Stoned Festival, which takes place on October 6th & 7th in Indianapolis. Over the summer, we’ve had two new festivals: Chicago Doomed & Stoned Festival and Ohio Doomed & Stoned Fest. We’ll likely be doing a festival in Portland later in the summer, too, perhaps doing an all-dayer in Eugene, too. These are very much passion projects and we're lucky to break even on them, but the joy of putting on a successful fest that brings together members of the community, that brings bands like Vokonis and Cardinals Folly to the United States for the first time, is totally worth it. This is history in the making. More than that, it's vital therapy for our people -- refueling our storehouses with the power of the Riff!
Tumblr media
Finally, other than the music, what's your other burning passion?
I have cats that I love to death. I’m a fanatical collector of B-movies, from the ‘60s and ‘70s especially –- the more awful the movie is, production wise, the more I delight in it. Probably that has a lot to do with growing up on Mystery Science Theater 3000. When B-movies and cats collide with music, I’m in a very happy place (see the band Gurt!). Also an avid fan of vintage comic books -- many of the narratives of the pre-code 1950s comic books were taking chances that rival many of the shocking storylines of Marvel and DC today. Surprisingly, one of the themes that I see recurring between titles is DOOM! It's a delight every time I discover one of these stories. Art, film, and music have a very important, symbiotic relationship and I find it tremendously gratifying to play historian and trace the threads of the past into the present and watch how they continue to evolve into the future.
I've also got a gang of cats that keep me in line and like to be very involved with the production of Doomed & Stoned, so much so that I've had to make cat beds in front of my monitor and in the drawer of one of my desks for a pair of twins I adopted from the pound some years back. They absolutely are enthralled with that desk of mind, whether I'm editing an article or interviewing someone for a show! Best of all, they love them some doom. They sleep soundly every time I've got the likes of Sea Bastard or Serpentine Path rumbling my speakers. Wouldn't trade 'em for all the vinyl in the world.
