I spent literal months, maybe years, living in a hospital from 2015 to 2019. I was not the patient, but my late wife was. I spent 95% of the time she was inpatient staying in the hospital with her because she had such a complicated mix of medical conditions that it was actually easier on our life at home if I was there all the time to "drive" things, as it were, and make sure every nurse at shift change knew about and covered everything about her condition. it was! exhausting!! and it was complicated by the fact that her pain management was multifactorial, constant, and required more involvement from staff than they sometimes had time to give. the nursing staff at our hospital is excellent and the hospital is recognized nationwide as excellent, but there's only so much anyone can do. and I can tell you right now that I remember *specific* nurses, out of the hundreds we dealt with, who were able to take the time to genuinely empathize with her (us) and work with her on making her stay suck less. they were angels and their impact was felt not just during her stay, but when we went home, even for me -- because it felt like I wasn't the only person who gave a fuck about my wife's pain and I wasn't in it all by myself.

this guide is really around patient interaction in general as much or more as it's about making conversation and at the core of it is empathy for people who are suffering and afraid. I hope this is a thing you can actually use at work because it can only help. this is incredible, incredible work. as a former caregiver, thank you.

One of the stranger things about training brand new nurses is explaining how to min max small talk. It feels very weird to coach people on how to chat.

I realized the other day that the reason I didn't watch much TV as a teenager (and why I'm only now catching up on late aughts/early teens media that I missed), is because I literally didn't understand how to use our TV. My parents got a new system, and it had three remotes with a Venn diagram of functions. If someone left the TV on an unfamiliar mode, I didn't know how to get back to where I wanted to be, so I just stopped watching TV on my own altogether.

I explained all this to my therapist, because I didn't know if this was more related to my then-unnoticed autism, or to my relationship with my parents at the time (we had issues less/unrelated to neurodivergency). She told me something interesting.

In children's autism assessments, a common test is to give them a straightforward task that they cannot reasonably perform, like opening an overtight jar. The "real" test is to see, when they realize that they cannot do it on their own, if they approach a caregiver for help. Children that do not seek help are more likely to be autistic than those that do.

This aligns with the compulsory independence I've noticed to be common in autistic adults, particularly articulated by those with lower support needs and/or who were evaluated later in life. It just genuinely does not occur to us to ask for help, to the point that we abandon many tasks that we could easily perform with minor assistance. I had assumed it was due to a shared common social trauma (ie bad experiences with asking for help in the past), but the fact that this trait is a childhood test metric hints at something deeper.

My therapist told me that the extremely pathologizing main theory is that this has something to do with theory of mind, that is doesn't occur to us that other people may have skills that we do not. I can't speak for my early childhood self, or for all autistic people, but I don't buy this. Even if I'm aware that someone else has knowledge that I do not (as with my parents understanding of our TV), asking for help still doesn't present itself as an option. Why?

My best guess, using only myself as a model, is due to the static wall of a communication barrier. I struggle a lot to make myself understood, to articulate the thing in my brain well enough that it will appear identically (or at least close enough) in somebody else's brain. I need to be actively aware of myself and my audience. I need to know the correct words, the correct sentence structure, and a close-enough tone, cadence, and body language. I need draft scripts to react to possible responses, because if I get caught too off guard, I may need several minutes to construct an appropriate response. In simple day-to-day interactions, I can get by okay. In a few very specific situations, I can excel. When given the opportunity, I can write more clearly than I am ever capable of speaking.

When I'm in a situation where I need help, I don't have many of my components of communication. I don't always know what my audience knows. I don't have sufficient vocabulary to explain what I need. I don't know what information is relevant to convey, and the order in which I should convey it. I don't often understand the degree of help I need, so I can come across inappropriately urgent or overly relaxed. I have no ability to preplan scripts because I don't even know the basic plot of the situation.

I can stumble though with one or two deficiencies, but if I'm missing too much, me and the potential helper become mutually unintelligible. I have learned the limits of what I can expect from myself, and it is conceptualized as a real and physical barrier. I am not a runner, so running a 5k tomorrow does not present itself as an option to me. In the same way, if I have subconscious knowledge that an interaction is beyond my capability, it does not present itself as an option to me. It's the minimum communication requirements that prevent me from asking for help, not anything to do with the concept of help itself.

Maybe. This is the theory of one person. I'm curious if anyone else vibes with this at all.

The Heart Killers EP12 | Kantbison + Sacrifice

Oh my god, this scene was another incredible acting highlight for me. The mutual self sacrifice, the depth of emotions displayed here.

Kant offers to take full responsibility and he's fairly composed when he says this. Being a caregiver means this is familiar territory. His duty lies with protecting his own at all costs.

But Bison flips the script, and offers to relinquish his freedom. The look on Kant's face is sheer anguish. He knows all too well how Bison's main desire is his liberty and it's been so hard won. He's willing to give it up if it means Kant and Babe are safe. When Lilly instructs Bison to poison Babe to death, you can see the enormity of such an act so agonisingly sink in. The cost is you destroy your partner emotionally, and very likely cause him to resent you forever.

Kant's face as it dawns on him that Bison may actually do it. The horror, the heartbreak, the panic, the fear. That quiet plea he throws Bison's way hit me so hard in the feels.

During her intro, we learn Mel is a second-year resident and she spent the past 2 months at the VA (Veteran Affairs). Her full name is Melissa and according to the script she is 28 years old.

This would put their mom dying about 8 years ago (~2016), when Mel was doing her undergrad. So she got through that, med school and one year of residency while taking care of her sister full-time. But since we know her mom was sick, Mel probably had to take care of Becca for even longer.

Considering Taylor has also mentioned Mel's loneliness and we've seen her trying to make friends with mostly Trinity and Frank. I think it's safe to say she doesn't have many friends at the moment.

So far, it hasn't been confirmed in the show. But Mel is shown self-soothing, stimming and other obvious signs. It's been talked about in the press, she's clearly neurodivergent-coded, if anything. 🔥 - a perma-regressor from both physical and mental trauma, touya is almost always a different age than his biological one— it’s the age itself that varies. usually, he’s around his late teens simply due to the coma messing with his development and making him constantly lag behind with those lost years. otherwise, he hovers comfortably around 10-13. It’s nearly impossible to get him any younger; he’s only hit those lower ages during really dire circumstances or when he manages to find a specific thing that triggers it (usually something to do with his mom).

🔥 - when he’s in that younger bracket, he’s very unpredictable and filled with the overwhelming turmoil of unprocessed trauma. he has really severe body dysmorphia in this headspace, which leads to bouts of him being unable to speak due to how alien his voice sounds and him breaking every reflective surface he can find. he can be very volatile during this time, throwing pretty extreme tantrums and meltdowns. he isn’t a “cute” regressor— his brain uses this time to physically process his trauma, even to his detriment. he fights back, he burns, he explodes. it’s full of flashbacks and destruction for anyone who dares to get close enough to him. he’s like a dying star, shifting between beautifully and horrifically bright.

🔥 - he doesn’t enjoy having caregivers. he feels suffocated by people doting on him and he already runs too warm and too sensitive for anyone to get close to him. that said, the league are the closest thing he has to one and, later, he slowly starts to reunite with his family and let them take care of him. either way, it’s a terribly long and painful process— filled with shattered hearts and lots of screaming as everyone figures out what does and doesn’t work. with the league, he likes sticking with toga the most. he hates adults and doesn’t trust men so he likes playing with her. at home, he sticks around his mother and fuyumi for the same reason, and they’re both incredibly gentle and patient with him— which he genuinely believes he doesn’t deserve. eventually, he starts opening up to shouto, who he likes because shouto’s very quiet and subdued which gives touya a rock to latch onto when he’s feeling far too much, and natsuo, who takes the opportunity to flip the script and take care of his older brother the way that touya did for him when they were young.

🔥 - touya is terrified of doctors/hospitals when he’s in that younger age range too, and while he isn’t afraid of fire or his quirk, he does get triggered by large flames (like bonfires or fireplaces) and the smell of smoke. he also hates when it’s too hot— both because his burns get itchy when he’s too sweaty and because the discomfort of heat will throw him into a flashback. as such, both his family and the league go out of their way to keep things colder, even if it means not turning on the heat in the middle of winter.

🔥 - because of his accident, touya medically has a lot of struggles with his body. he is extremely prone to chronic pain and even basic illnesses can lay him out for over a week. on really bad days, he can barely eat or make it to the bathroom and he often has to regress to deal with the pain and discomfort. this means that he’s usually padded during this time as he’s had many accidents from being unable to move from bed. his fear and hatred of nurses and the hospital mean that it’s mostly his family taking care of him, soothing him when it hurts too much and doing everything they can to make him comfortable. this was true with the league, as well, and it was mostly kurogiri making sure that he was okay and taking care of him. shigaraki offered more than once to decay his limbs if they kept giving him trouble, saying that they can replace them with something better and less painful. touya is pretty sure that was his way of telling him to stop groaning so loud, but he appreciated the sentiment even if he’s far too stubborn to take it.

🔥 - he hates basic touch, but he does like deep pressure therapy because he can feel it even with his scarring. this basically means that he doesn’t really enjoy hand holding or hugs, but he does like cuddles if someone is on top of him or they’re holding him tight enough. he really enjoys curling up under a weighted blanket with his family because their quirks keeps him cool and the blanket keeps him regulated (I don’t actually know if it’s ever revealed what fuyumi and natsuo’s quirks are but,,, I’m pretty sure they’re closer to rei’s. if not, this one is for shouto and rei lol)

🔥 - when he comes home, he finds out that his room was boxed up and cleaned out by his father and he spirals into a massive meltdown that nearly burns the entire house down. while fuyumi calms him, holding him tightly and rocking him back and forth while singing songs that she knows her students like, his mother and brothers get to work taking everything from storage and putting it back exactly how it was. the boys base it off pictures while rei uses only her memory because she’s been thinking about touya and his room for years. once it’s fixed and they show him, he immediately drops down to a much lower age. it’s a balancing act— meeting in the middle between what was and what is— and it’s one that takes a lot of work but it soothes him to have things be the way that he remembers because that jarring leap of seeing time passed and everything different freaks him out (it reminds him too much of waking up and suddenly being years older and covered in scars).

🔥 - the league actually knows his name is touya from really early on because he hated being called dabi when he was feeling younger. the easiest way to figure out how old he was, was to call him by a name and see how he reacted. if there wasn’t one, he was at least sixteen. if he scrunched his nose in disgust and pouted, he was around thirteen or so. post war, he actually misses the system a lot because his family struggles to tell how old he is and he hates trying to put a number on the boiling emotions he’s feeling. when he is able to reunite with the league under supervision, he relishes under the familiarity of it and the most settled he’s ever been is with both of his families around him.

[ACT II] CHAPTER 6

It has been a few days since her emotional meeting with Yuu. They agreed to meet every weekend. After getting him his own phone (making it easier for them to plan), they have been meeting at a small coffee shop every Saturday at 9am. Yuu made sure Grim was awake and ready to go early and in the shop, both siblings treated him like a child. He was the unofficial little brother.

“_ I have talked to Ambrose, he said if you want he can be your legal tutor.

_Why would he do that?

_ Because he is my legal tutor. He said he didn't want to separate us and would even set up an account for you.

_That’s very generous of him but why?

_ We are minors, and if we can't go back home, we need an identity and money to live here. Yuu, since we are not from this world, we don't legally exist in this world… well you don’t… I’m legally under Ambrose’s care.”

He could tell the RSA director was much more responsible just by looking at her. Fresh clothes, clean and spotless. Unlike him who wore his uniform for three days straight. Yuu only had two sets of regular uniform for a week, one for sports and that's all. [Name]... She had five sets and it changed depending on what she wanted. Her skirt varied in length, going from maxi to the average above knees. And it was worse with the sleeve, puffed, juliet (his favorite), Bishop, petal… She didn't have to worry about not having a uniform because she forgot to hang it to dry the night before and now she had to go with the smelly one. Then your fashion oriented teacher decide to lend you a new one (oversized, of course) until the other is dry.

“_ Now that I think about it, how come the RSA has women's uniforms ?

_ Ah… It was made for me by Ambrose and Flora.

_ Flora?

_ Yes, she is a fairy and is my caregiver. I’m the only girl there so it was decided to have another woman take care of me for some very biological reason…”

SHE HAVE A CAREGIVER?? Yuu almost spitted his coffee. He was the caregiver! And the therapist… [Name] could see his turmoil.

“_ Why not joining me in RSA ?

_ It would feel like betraying the other… and…

_ I’m happy that you made friends, you were such a loner in the past.”

Yuu waited for Grim to go get another cake with his sister's money before speaking.

“_ They are not my friends, I’m just following the script.

_ Script? Yuu… that-!

_ You were never interested in sports, I asked Ruggie about how you knew each other and he said that you just met at the festival and you were a fan. So I had Riddle ask Chen’ya about you, and you arrived at RSA at the entrance ceremony.”

[Name] shuddered instinctively as Yuu cupped her face lovingly. She unconsciously shivered as he smiled down at her.

“_ You know, I don’t like it when you lie and hide things from me.

_ I… I… I’m sorry brother … I didn't mean to…

_ So? Can you tell me how?”

[Name] took a deep breath before taking a sip of her coffee.

“_ This world is part of a game… and I’m a tester… I reached the end of the VDC before I got into this world.

_ I see, who was the main character?

_ A genderless character who came from another world. His default name was the same as yours so… in my game it was Yuu.

_ Were you good?

_ At the start not really, I was a complete beginner. I lost a lot at the start.”

She chuckled as Yuu smiled softly. He could remember how many times he rewind time, but he did die a lot at the start. The event she talked about concorded with his experience. He died at those exact places. [Name] wasn't aware of it, but she controlled him when she played the “game”. He didn't want her to feel sad so he kept silent.

“_I see, then I'm counting on you to help me in NRC.”

[Name] nodded eagerly. They continued to chat, with her talking about the story/future happening and him listening already aware of them. They spent the whole day doing that.

Flora was baking a pie for [Name], the young girl seemed happier nowadays. It was thanks to her loving care… and her brother.

The fairy hummed happily as she flew around, baking and cooking with magic was so easy and fun. She was certain her sisters would have agreed. Suddenly a soft knock was heard on the door.

“_ Yes? I'm sorry but [Name] isn't home yet.”

She opened the door and met a handsome young man. He was indeed handsome with his brown hair parted in the middle, falling gracefully reaching his ears, and those honeyed hazel eyes shining with a playful charm. What a handsome boy indeed, like a prince.

But after Neige’s incident she knew better than to trust a pretty face. Flora observed him carefully.

“_ Oh, what a pity then! I will come by tomorrow then. I just wanted to bring this bouquet of roses as a thank you for taking care of one of my dorm students.

_ Your dorm?

_ Ah, sorry. I forgot to introduce myself, I'm Henry Beaumont. I'm Aurelius' Dorm leader.

_ Oh my! I hope our Aurelius doesn't cause you problem.

_ Not at all, he is very helpful.”

Henry bowed politely as he gave her a soft smile. The fairy was gushing in front of him. He was so gentle, so elegant and charming. Without thinking, she took the roses.

“_ Well, I will go. Have a good night.”

[Name] walked through the garden at the front of her dorm. She hummed softly as she walked inside Royaldawn. The young girl blinked in surprise as she was greeted with a bouquet of roses. She smiled warmly as she took the bouquet.

“_ Thank you, Flora. What's the occasion?

_Oh, no. It's not from me. It's a gift from a charming student.”

[Name] nodded not thinking much about it.

“_ One isn't fully blooming…”

She said softly as her finger delicately brushed the petal.

“_Ouch! The thorn prickled my fingers…

_ Oh my! Let me see.”

[Name] chuckled softly as she watched Flora taking care of her finger.

If you grew up with caregivers who neglected you or broke their promises, your brain probably wired itself not to trust other people, and to only rely on yourself.

If you grew up in poverty, or if your parents always refused to get you nice things for any reason, your brain may have wired itself to see nice/expensive things as inherently unattainable.

If you were always comparing your looks against glossy airbrushed celebrities, your brain may have wired itself to perceive the way you look as inadequate, maybe even ugly.

If people were always telling you that you were stupid, ugly, lazy, worthless, or whatever, your brain may have wired these beliefs in.

Thus it's possible to accumulate many negative beliefs that get in the way of happiness and self-fulfillment. And it sucks. But there's good news - your brain structure is changeable. This is called neuroplasticity.

So how do you do it? Simple: You make your brain re-wire itself by telling and showing it a different narrative.

Techniques and practices such as affirmations, writing scripts, visualization boards are all excellent ways to do this. All of those techniques for changing your self-concept are really techniques for rewiring your brain!

Also, your brain will rewire itself better if you're less stressed out and getting proper nutrition and hydration. This is why stuff like meditation, "healing frequencies," moving around and getting exercise, adding more nutritious foods to your diet, and making sure you're getting enough water can be very helpful.

It's also important to be mindful of things that might reinforce the narrative you're tying to overwrite. For example, if you feel like you're worthless because you're ugly, hanging out with people who call others ugly as an insult probably won't be good for you. If you're insecure about your intelligence, you might want to hold off on watching movies that feature supergeniuses as main characters. If there's anything that might be feeding your negative beliefs, try and cut it out of your mental diet for awhile, and see if it makes a difference.

Affirmations, scripts, etc. that reinforce a narrative of needing to be better than others, or needing to meet some arbitrary level of success to have value can also reinforce negative narratives. Are you telling yourself that you're the most beautiful/handsome? Stop that. Tell yourself that you're attractive, period. Are you telling yourself that you're a "high-value person"? Again, stop that. Just tell yourself that you deserve love and respect.

Also, if you're dealing with mental illness, you shouldn't really expect this to be a full-on cure for it. You might be able to rewire your brain in a way that your mental illness is less impactful, but that doesn't mean you won't stop experiencing symptoms in some way. It's okay if you still need medication, professional therapy, etc.

Finally, remember: what you are doing is a natural, organic process - you're making your brain grow differently. This means it'll take time! You can't expect yourself to get overnight results any more than you can expect an acorn to turn into a whole oak tree overnight. Anyone out there telling you that you can just do this overnight without any effort has probably already rewired their brain a lot more than they realize, and underestimates how much work it took them to get where they are.

The Grumps’ Danganronpa V3 playthrough is shaping up to be their best Dangan playthrough solely because Arin gave Kokichi the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Also, now that I’m rewatching the story, I’m actually surprised by the level of thought that was put into this. Now I’m not saying the story is good, none of the writing in this series is great, but I do appreciate the commitment to the game’s theme of franchise stagnation.

Everyone knows by now that the twist is that the main villain is the Danganronpa franchise itself, that the franchise got so big that the world has become obsessed with it. We’re now 53 seasons into this Danganronpa show, hence why the game is called V3 (V = 5). So I like how the game feels like the writers had run out of ideas and are just putting whatever crap they can come up with out there, hoping the fanbase likes it. I mean…a robot high schooler? 5 Monokumas instead of 1? Even the ultimate talents feel like they’re scraping at the bottom of the barrel, such as Maki being a child caregiver, Kokichi being a supreme leader, Himiko being a mage, Kiyo being an anthropologist, and Gonta being an entomologist.

It’s giving, “we used up all the good ideas already, so let’s just use whatever we can find in the dictionary as a talent.”

There’s also some other nice touches that help give off the feeling that this is a franchise that is stagnating. Kaede makes a weird lewd comment out of nowhere and Shuichi points out how weird the comment was by saying she sounded like a perverted old man. Knowing how perverted the dialogue is in the Danganronpa franchise, the scene gives off the feeling that the writers are just recycling the scripts. The Monokubs literally talk about flubbing their lines. But the biggest point that I didn’t catch the first time around is that the characters don’t have any idea why they’re even there. At least in the first two games, the reason was that they’re going to school. Here, they don’t even have a reason why they’re gathered together. It’s like the writers couldn’t come up with a reason and said, “Ah, fuck it, who cares, let’s just get to the killing game.”

It really gives off the feeling that you’re watching a franchise that’s several seasons in and the writers don’t know what they’re doing anymore. Which honestly works since that’s LITERALLY the twist.

So…could it be that V3 might actually be the best written Dangan game? Hmm…

Movement caught Cleo’s eye. They looked up in time to see Jimmy and Tango land just outside their base. They smiled down at Skye. “Your dads are here sweetheart. Time for you to go home.”

Skye perked up and whirled around to see them waiting. She beamed and waved at them enthusiastically. Then turned back to Cleo. “Thank you for school today!”

“You’re welcome, Skye.” Cleo helped the little Avian put her things in her backpack and then escorted her outside. “Jimmy, can I speak with you a moment please?”

“Of course.”

“Come inside.” Cleo opened the front door wider. “He’ll catch up with you,” they said to Tango. Who nodded. Tango took Skye’s hands and helped her take off into the air. Cleo shut the door behind Jimmy.

“What’s going on, Cleo?”

They took a deep breath and set their hands on their hips. “We were working on our letters today. She can write a little but not much. But…” Cleo picked up a coloring page off the little desk Skye sat at. “You said she had parents, right? Killed by pillagers?”

“Yeah.”

Skye’s name was in the corner of the coloring page. But where a surname might have been was an eclectic collection of squiggles. Not common script and definitely not even Galactic Script.

“I don’t think she knows her family name,” Cleo said. “I know not everyone has a family name but we can’t all be Grian.”

Jimmy couldn’t help the little snicker in the back of his throat. “Yeah. So why did you want me alone?”

“Tango mentioned when he dropped her off the other day that you do most of the caring for her. Primary caregiver, and all that.”

“Right.”

“And today I told her that her dads were here to pick her up. I’ve never said that before. And she didn’t protest.”

“Okay?”

“Jim. Talk to Bdubs or Scar at the courthouse. You can legally adopt her. It’s been seven months and there’s been no sign of her family or any next-of-kin. There’s no one looking for her. You could give her one of your surnames. Or both I don’t care. Just… think about it. Speak to Tango about it. Then maybe tell her your decision when the two of you have one.”

“Cleo, she’s already my girl,” Jimmy said, pulling a brown leather cord out from under his shirt. An inch of a narrow Blaze Rod and a shimmering snow white feather hung together on the cord. “This means more to an Avian than some paper that says she is.”

“But that paper is a legal trail that stops her from being taken away from you,” Cleo pointed out. “If some second-cousin-twice-removed’s best friend’s former roommate shows up trying to claim custody, that paper would let her stay at the ranch. Where you’re guaranteed to take care of her.”

Jimmy thought for a moment. “I’ll speak to Tango. We’ll think about it.”

“I just see how happy she makes you. And how happy and healthy she is with you. And I don’t want you to suffer the heartbreak of losing her.”

“Thanks. I do appreciate you looking out for us.”

“Sure thing. Go catch up with them.”

Jimmy nodded, left the base, and took off. Cleo sighed and finished cleaning up the last stragglers of mess from the day’s lesson. Skye wasn’t a messy child, but there were always a few bits left over.

Tango was startled as he flew by the SoulBond between him and Jimmy warming up. Tango... Jimmy's voice said in his mind, sounding sad. Tango, she doesn't remember her family name.

Who, Cleo?

No. Skye. Cleo showed me a coloring page. Her first name was there but the last name was just random squiggles. Cleo’s fairly certain she doesn’t know her surname.

Strange. She’ll be seven soon. She remembers her birthday. She seems old enough to know her surname.

“Tango, we passed the ranch!” Skye called with a laugh over the wind.

“Just making sure you’re paying attention sweetheart,” Tango replied. She laughed harder as they turned around and descended toward the ranch. Tango held both her hands the whole way down. She wasn’t fully confident on her landings yet. But she was doing much better.

We’ll talk more after she goes to bed, Jimmy added.

He ran with Skye into her landing, hitting the ground running, on the path in front of the ranch, leading up to the house. Once they were both safely on the ground, he strolled up to the house with her and scooped her up. She squealed. "How was school today, sweetheart?" he asked.

"It was fun! We did letters and some numbers and coloring!"

"And you were good for Cleo?"

Skye nodded, her flyaway hairs bouncing around her head. "Uh-huh. Jimmy told me that I have to be sweet, and nice, and use my inside voice, and that I need to listen."

"That's exactly right. So you do your best?"

"Uh-huh!"

"Good." Tango set her down on the kitchen counter. Her wings ruffled. "I think good kids deserve a little after-school snack."

Skye gasped, dark blue eyes going wide. "Like what?"

Tango smiled and opened their chest full of packed ice. "I was thinking an apple."

"Yummy!"

Tango chuckled and extracted an apple from the chest, holding it out.

Skye's snowy wings fluttered. "Please?"

He set it in her extended hands. "There you go, sweetpea." He ruffled her flyaway hairs that had escaped her crown braid.

Thud!

Jimmy landed hard on the balcony upstairs. Tango took a deep breath and sighed. Jimmy was going to royally screw up his knees on landings like that if he wasn't careful.

"Jimmy's back," he said.

Skye beamed around the bite she was taking from the apple. "Yay!"

Jimmy came running down the stairs with a big smile on his face. "Where's our girl!"

"Jimmyyyyy!" Skye smiled wider, setting her apple down.

Jimmy picked her up under the arms and swung her off the counter, spinning in a circle while she squealed and laughed. "Hi princess!" he said, setting her on his hip and giving her a big squeeze. She giggled and hugged him back around the neck. "Oh, I swear you get bigger every day!"

She playfully stuck her tongue out at him. He gently pinched her nose and wiggled it. She squealed.

Tango kept himself a few paces away to avoid getting whacked by a wing. He slid a hand down his opposite arm and gently touched the two feathers hanging off his bracelet. One twice the size of the other and yellow. The smaller one snowy white.

He smiled, watching Jimmy play and be silly with her. Jimmy was so much better at being a dad than Tango. Tango tried—and he genuinely loved Skye as his own kid—but it came so naturally to Jimmy to nurture in a way it just didn't to Tango. Tango had to work at it.

Jimmy set Skye back on the counter and handed her the apple—but not before pretending to take a bite out of it while she squealed and wiggled to try and take it from him.

By the light above, Tango loved them both so much.

"So, Cleo doesn't think Skye knows her surname?" Tango asked.

Jimmy fluttered his wings to reorder the feathers where he held Tango against his side on the roof of the ranch house. "No."

"And why aren't we talking to Skye about this?"

"I don't want her to feel sad yet, thinking about her parents. She's been so happy lately. And I know talking to her about this is inevitable, but I wanted to talk to you about it first. Because, er..." Jimmy cleared his throat. "Cleo suggested we adopt her and give her one of our family names. Or both."

Tango's fire hair flared, his magic spinning around his hands in red and yellow swirls. "What?"

"You hate it," Jimmy said.

"No—no!" Tango protested. He grabbed Jimmy's hands and looked Jimmy directly in the eyes. "Hey. Listen to me, Jimmy. Skye is our girl. She's our kid. You have been an amazing dad to her for these past seven months. I was just surprised that Cleo suggested we properly adopt her." Tango pressed closer, shuffling so he could press his forehead to Jimmy's. "I love you. I love her. You two are my family." He inhaled deeply, their SoulBond warming between them. "If you want to adopt her, then let's do it."

"I... I don't know, Tango."

"What? Why?"

"Cleo suggested we adopt Skye in case someone came for her to take her away from us, and at least we're guaranteed to take care of her. But what if whoever came for her would take care of her better because they're her real family? Like a cousin or an aunt or a—"

"Jimmy Solidarity. Listen to me," Tango interrupted. Jimmy closed his mouth. "You are doing a fantastic job taking care of her. I know I have a lot to improve on as a parent. But you are a natural. No one would take better care of her than you. And she adores you. I say we can adopt her, if that's what you want. A paper trail that makes her ours."

"You're sure?"

"Positive. And I say we give her your name. Skye Solidarity sounds really cute."

"Wait—Tango—no," Jimmy said. "We give her your name too. If she's ours, not just mine, we should show that. She can be Skye Tek-Solidarity."

Tango leaned back so Jimmy could see him raising an eyebrow. "Solidarity-Tek."

"We'll see which one she chooses, if she agrees to let us adopt her."

Tango smiled. "And if she doesn't know or care, we go Solidarity-Tek."

Jimmy grinned and gave Tango a kiss. "Always too sweet to me."

"Only trying to give back what you grant me." Tango tucked himself back against Jimmy's side. "And Solidarity-Tek sounds better for her."

Jimmy huffed a small laugh. "If you say so." He ran his fingers through Tango's warm hair, the fire in it unable to burn him from their SoulBond.

"Should we talk to her in the morning? See if she wants us to adopt her?"

"I... I think we should."

Tango tilted his head and pressed a kiss to Jimmy's jaw. "Excited?"

"Nervous."

"Why? Even if she says no, she's our girl."

"I know."

Tango was still asleep when Jimmy woke Skye to have breakfast before taking her to Cleo's. She clung to him as he carried her downstairs and set her down on her usual stool at the kitchen counter. She slumped over the table, tired and groggy.

"Dad?" she asked quietly.

Jimmy froze. She'd always referred to her father as Papa. And she'd always called him Jimmy. "What's going on, kiddo?"

"Can I have an apple with breakfast this morning?"

"Of course, sweet pea." Jimmy didn't say anything about her calling him dad. Just grabbed an apple and set it in front of her while he prepared her toast.

"Is it okay if I call you Dad?" Skye asked. She looked up, deep blue eyes wide but tired, blinking slowly to try and stay awake. "Cleo said you and Tango are my dads. You are, right?"

Panicking a little, Jimmy yanked on the SoulBond between him and Tango. Wake up, Skye's talking about us being her dads, he thought frantically.

The SoulBond didn't warm. It blazed.

Jimmy took a deep breath and ruffled his wings as he toasted some bread for her. "Do you want us to be?" he asked carefully.

Upstairs, there was rumbling and then Tango came crashing haphazardly down the stairs, hastily clad in one of his work jumpsuits that was skewed off his shoulder. "Morning!" he greeted, crossing and kissing the back of Skye's head before adding some extra bread to be toasted. He kissed Jimmy's cheek and leaned against the counter.

Jimmy left him to watch the toast and went to put an arm around Skye's shoulders, careful to avoid pinching her feathers. "Sweet pea, if that's what you want..."

"Well you are, right? You take care of me. You love me... don't you?"

"Oh of course we love you," Jimmy said, giving her a squeeze. "You've brought so much joy into our lives since you came to live with us. If you want us to be your dads, then that's what we are."

"We were actually going to talk to you about that," Tango added. "We wanted to ask if you wanted us to officially adopt you. Give you our family name." He pulled her toast off the fire first, slathered some butter on it, set it on a plate, and set it on the counter in front of her. "We'd love to adopt you. For you to be our daughter legally and officially. But if that's not what you want, that's okay, sweetheart."

Jimmy bent to be at her eye level and pulled out his necklace, identical but opposite to hers. A bit of Blaze Rod and a white feather on a brown leather cord. "Look at me, Skye. You're already our daughter. This makes you family. Our family. Me and Tango, we're SoulBound. Our souls were tied together when I was born since I'm younger than him. We feel each other's emotions and can sometimes hear each other's thoughts. That's what makes us family to one another. But the fact that we love you—the fact that you have my feather and a piece of Tango's Blaze Rod—that's how we show you that you're our family too." He cradled the back of her head in its messy braid in one big hand. "Skye, you can call me Dad all you want. If you want me to be your dad, then that's what I'll be."

Skye looked between the two of them. "Adopting me means I'd be your daughter, right?"

"Legally and officially. We already consider you our kid. But adopting you would make it so that you can't be taken away from us."

Skye nodded. "I want you to adopt me."

Let's hope she remembers that when she's a teenager, Tango's thoughts said sarcastically in the back of Jimmy's head. Jimmy's wing twitched in a hush motion toward Tango. Tango didn't read Avian wing- and body-language as well as Skye could, but he knew Jimmy well enough to know what that meant.

"Okay, sweet pea. Then that's what we'll do. I'll talk to the courthouse today while you're at school. Is that okay?"

"Yeah."

"And what do you want your last name to be?"

"What do you mean?"

"Do you want to be Skye Solidarity? Or Skye Tek? Or Skye Solidarity-Tek? Or Skye Tek-Solidarity?"

Skye blinked several times, looking between Jimmy and Tango a few times. "I get to choose?"

"Of course! We want you to like your name. And if you get to pick it, then you'll like it better, right?"

"I think so?" Skye fidgeted with a feather. "Can... Can I have both of your names?"

"Oh, Skye. Yes," Jimmy said. "Solidarity-Tek or Tek-Solidarity will be both of our names."

"Oh. Okay. Um..." She looked down and muttered under her breath. Hearing her name with either combination of last name.

Then she looked up.

"Is Skye Solidarity-Tek okay?" she asked.

"Oh, sweet pea, of course," Jimmy said.

"Why do you call me that?"

"A sweet pea is a type of flower that's really pretty and smell very nice," Jimmy said.

"They're also very helpful for potions," Tango added under his breath.

"Oh. Okay," Skye said.

"C'mon. Let's get your breakfast finished and then I'll redo your braid and we'll fly over to Cleo's."

"Okay."

"She'll need something to call you," Jimmy said softly as he and Tango sat in a waiting area of the courthouse, waiting for Scar or Bdubs to actually show up to do their job.

Tango twitched like Jimmy had startled him. Like he hadn't been listening. "What?"

"Skye. I think she'll probably end up calling me 'Dad.' But she used to call her father 'Papa.' So... she'll need something to call you," Jimmy said, elaborating a little.

Tango shrugged. "She can call me whatever. I don't really mind." He kicked his ankle up onto his opposite knee. "If it's not too similar to cause any bad memories, I'm down for just being Pops. Or something else. Doesn't make much difference to me. She can just call me Tango. I don't mind."

"We'll... we'll ask her later what she wants."

"Fine with me."

At that moment, Bdubs finally made his appearance, still in his judge's robes. "Whaddaya want, ya scoundrels?" he asked—loud and playful. Tango laughed as he stood up. Jimmy also hopped out of his chair, shuffling his wings back against his spine.

"We're adopting the kid we took in," Tango said. "Skye."

Bdubs blinked his big eyes. "Oh. Well, uh... let's go get some paperwork, then. Follow me." He waved with one arm. Tango and Jimmy followed along after him. "How long has that kid been staying with you?"

"Seven months now," Jimmy said.

"And ya wanna adopt her officially."

"Yep," Tango replied.

Bdubs slowed down and turned to Tango with narrowed eyes. "No, I'm serious. You wanna adopt her. Mr. I Don't Want Kids Ever Tek?"

Tango shrugged. "She's family now. She wormed her way into my heart and I'm not letting her go. She has no other family that she knows of. Or that we've been able to find. She's ours." He raised his bracelet to show the two feathers dangling off it.

"Oh, she's Avian."

"That's right," Jimmy said.

"I remember one of you mentioning that now. Okay. Yeah." He led them into an office and indicated for them to sit down. "So, there's a bit of paperwork you'll have to fill out."

"Understood," Tango said.

Bdubs was still giving him a scrutinizing look.

"You don't think I'll be a good parent or something?" Tango demanded, tone tight.

"You never wanted kids."

"Things change, Bubbles. Whether you think I'm an unworthy parent or not, she's my kid. I love her as my kid. She's brought us both so much joy and we want to raise her with love and happiness. We know it's not always going to be easy but it's going to be worth it. She's our little baby bird and I don't care what you think so long as you let me legally call her my daughter. We're going to take good care of her and be the best parents we can be." Tango's fire hair flickered hotter and faster.

The SoulBond warmed between them. Jimmy set a hand on Tango's knee. It's okay, Tango, he thought soothingly. His calm emotions washed over Tango, tempering the fire just a bit.

Bdubs sat back in his chair. "And that's what I wanted to hear," he said. He pushed some papers across his desk. "Fill these out. Then tomorrow you can bring Skye to the courthouse and we'll make it official." He took a quill out of the inkwell on his desk and passed it to Jimmy, who'd reached out first. Tango let him do the filling out. Tango was prone to smearing ink and Jimmy's handwriting was a bit neater.

But they sat close together and looked over the forms and quietly discussed how to fill them out.

"Solidarity-Tek," Tango reminded Jimmy when they got to that portion. "She decided Skye Solidarity-Tek." Tango smiled warmly. "As she should."

Jimmy gave Tango a warm smile. Reflected in their SoulBond heating up with a merry sort of heat.

Bdubs' wide eyes looked away as he pursed his lips.

"—and after reviewing the paperwork and interviewing the prospective parents, I have found you worthy of adopting young Skye here as your daughter. I hereby declare Tango Tek and Jimmy Solidarity the legal parents of Skye Solidarity-Tek," Bdubs said. The hearing hadn't been long. There was no legal battle or anything. This was a formality more than anything.

Scar beamed and clapped. "Congratulations to you both."

Skye squealed and bounced into a hug that Jimmy used to scoop her up onto his hip. She was still plenty small enough for him to do so and Jimmy was tall for an Avian. He wrapped his wings around her too and held her close. "Hear that, sweet pea? You're our daughter!"

"Yay!"

Tango—gently—batted one of Jimmy's wings out of the way so he could come into the little yellow-gold box of feathers and put his arms around both of them, holding his family close as Jimmy did the same. "Look at us! Whole little rancher family now, eh?" He ruffled Skye's hair—loose for once since they hadn't flown to the courthouse.

"A whole, little family, yeah," Jimmy agreed.

He kissed the top of Skye's head, then the top of Tango's.

"We're your dads, Skye," Tango said.

She beamed. "I'm happy you're my dads!"

"We're happy you're our daughter."

🧸 Hannibal?

Oh Hannibal is big caregiver energy!

I like it when people flip the script and write him as a regressor, but he's sooo settled as a cg in my brain.

Three Headcanons:

1- Hannibal is almost never protective of people, and that is intentional: the world shapes them and that is the process that fascinates him. I think that a regressor would cross that line: he would want a lot more control over what happens to them and how it impacts them.

That's not to say that he wouldn't allow harm to befall them, but he would want to be the cause of the harm, and be there afterwards to put the pieces back together in the shape that suits him best.

2- Hannibal would absolutely thrive on putting together a wardrobe for a regressor: all the little touches that reinforce regression (buttons that they can't do themselves, so he has to help: the clothes a little too big in specific spots to make them feel physically smaller)

3- he would want to Know so much, it's overwhelming to consider: he would want to know all the regression triggers, positive and negative, even the ones that the regressor isn't aware of themselves. He would want to know activities that make a regressor comfortable, and ones that make them feel vulnerable but not enough to push them out of regression: the memories that they associate with regression and the ones that they've repressed. He would want to know every inch of someone's childhood and their journey into regression before he'd met them. A vast expanse of knowledge that he can use to push in the smallest and most subtle ways.

Ongoing Series - Thai

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 10 of 12 - I am a little concerned that this is getting too big for its britches, rather like Phaya’s recently recovered snake… shall we say? Adding in yet another character at this juncture isn’t the best idea. Still, I love how this show makes me cackle laugh with grandmas + Yai and then TENSION.

It’s a wobbly kind of balance but a balancing act is happening nonetheless. It makes the pacing of this show good. It may be all over the place but I'm never bored.

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 11 of 14 - No trash talk this week, I was charmed & delighted. Who knew I would actually enjoy this show? Certainly not me. (not much of a...) Trash watch happening here.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 8 of 12 - I am pretty much skipping most of the 3 chef friends, and all of the side dish action (sorry Neo). And with OffGun apart for most of this ep, it didn’t hold together since they are the glue. Sigh.

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 12fin - Okay let’s talk about it.

Mhok should have gone off with someone else. Day treated him like shit and never once apologized. To assume an apology isn’t necessary is to pity Day in the exact way he didn’t want. (On a complete aside, one of my favorite Thai restaurants back in my mispent youth was in Hilo, HI… ah memories) meanwhile the "passing escalators trope" activated in the land of malls (it’s been a while my old friend).

Anygay, I hold that Mohk was not a fault and Day was the one who needed to apologize.

Although they did have one of BL's BEST ever face touch moments. 

In conclusion: 

The story of a blind man and his caregiver falling in love. Mark is great. JimmySea are spectacular. The support cast is GMMTV-good. And for the first 3/4 this BL was something rather special. But it was let down by its ending (for which I entirely blame the author). In order to like this show you must buy into the premise that Mhok was in the wrong and caused their breakup. If you don’t believe that, you won’t like this BL. Also "fixing a disability = true happiness" is gross messaging. For me, endings counts for a lot and this one was ultimately “happy” but felt like a failure. 7/10 and I was sorely tempted to go as low as a 6/10, so it should count itself lucky 

I dithered my darling BLabies... I dithered A LOT over this one. But JimmySea alone held this one up.

GMMTV we gotta talk. You're fielding some of the world's best pairs right now. It's time to get them equally good scripts.

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 9 of 12 - This installment had too much of the side couple in it. Although it was nice to see First/Dream (Twins) again. He's still a cutie, even playing a straight. 

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) ep 23 of 24 - I have to say I’m very glad we are on the last installment of the series. Narcissistic hairdresser starts seeing a spirit in a mirror. Turns out to be a friend from his youth who he thought was dead. This one is kinda sweet, and I find the premise interesting. Is the kid actually dead and a spirit? Or is there something else going on? I am intrigued. And I like the actor playing the kid in the mirror. I suspect this will be sad tho.

Time the series (Thai Gaga) ep 3 of 10 - I don’t exactly know what is going on. And frankly I don’t particularly care, either. So far nothing seems to be happening, and I really intensely dislike one half of the main couple. DNF welcome 2024 here we go 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Love For Love's Sake (Korea Weds iQIYI) 1-2 of 8 - based on the Manhwa Love Supremacy Zone by Hwacha (they should have kept the original title). I adore the premise. IRL person has been sent into fictional universe to save a side character from doom. Fantastic. Every fanfic author's dream. Also, I love that our POV was the bad boy in high school so there’s also a redemption arc going on. I adore this kind of isekai (if you wanna call it that). Puppy/cat pairing too! 

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 3 of 10 - Oh my goodness they too cute. Basically dating. Although only one of them realizes it, and he is such a drama queen. It’s GREAT. Also they are both so damn gay. I love the supportive bestie trying to cope with the girl who has a crush on his gay bff. 

Happy Ending (Korea Tues YT) 1 of 3 - Strongberry is back and it’s very them and very atmospheric and cute. I’m enjoying it. 

Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 7 of 8 - Japan giveth and Japan taketh away again. Look, I just like the lost love teacher/teacher couple better. I'm assuming they'll have to do a time jump in the final episode to make this one work at all. 

I am SO GLAD we have KBLs back on our screens.

Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, it’s me… I hate you. You’re about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure you’re someone’s kink, you're my weakest link. Goodbye. I DNFed this at ep 5. Frankly I'm impressed with myself for getting that far.

The Whisperer (Sun ????) 10 eps - Ends next week. Thai horror BL that ALSO involves cheating (what joy is mine). I don't think even the perfect single dimple can motivate me to watch. Word is... it's terrible.

7 Days Before Valentine (Weds WeTV) 10 eps - Giving me Luminous Solution vibes. I'm waiting to binge if safe.
