So about six years ago, I created a homebrew system for a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon tabletop game. It didn't quite pan out, so I migrated to a heavily homebrewed version of DnD 5e (also designed by yours truly.) Until about 4 months ago, I was running two different campaigns as well as a handful of smaller adventures. I can't take full credit, my boyfriend has been a massive help with running games and coming up with homebrew. Over the last half decade, I've kept a record of all of the characters that have played in our games. And regarding your last post omg I been fearing for Ren's life the *moment* we learned Madame X can get rid of grunts who fail too much remotely. Like- like????? They have his body in HQ???? His soul in a mechanical body????? She can so *so much harm* whenever she pleases I'm so scared for the raid-

i got excited answering this and went off on a couple of spoiler-filled tangents, so I included the rest under the cut.

I 10000000% agree, especially about the upcoming raid! Team Xen grunts literally sign away their bodies and souls when they join, so it's no wonder why seemingly redeemable characters like Eli and Sharon are forced to stay on.

[aside: I'm pretty sure that Team Xen "recruitment" in general follows a standard format where people in life-threatening or easily manipulable situations are offered either a second chance at their own life or the chance to save the life of a loved one. I mean, there's Neved with Francesca, Madelis with Lisbeth, Keta with Aelita. I mean, there's a grave marked "Eli" at Carotos Peak and I don't think that's a coincidence. Why else would all these people fight (presumably) for the destruction of the world? All those fires in Aevium's past (like the lab fire with Jenner, Maddie (prob Madelis), and Cas (prob Cassandra)), could in part be a massive recruitment effort.]

Anyway, I think the only hope for Ren in the upcoming raid is what I mentioned before, about how he is somehow integral to Team Xen's overarching plans, as per renegade 13.5. My best guess is that these plans include using the energy emitted from a Xenpurgis rampage in GDC to fulfill the dark prophecy, using "the four shadows" mentioned on the Absol Statue back in Blacksteeple to bring back Storm-9.

The shadows that shade the earth shall be known in the end. The one of raw evil, the one of obsession, the one of betrayal, and the one of greed. These four shall see the world be lost forever.

We don't have enough information to definitively say who the one of raw evil, obsession, or greed could be. But betrayal? It fits Ren. In the scene where he is first "hired" or whatever and meets Madame X, I feel like this idea is pretty spoon-fed to us.

MADAME X: Have you brought him? The one I've detailed. NASTASIA: Yes. Please, come forth. Introduce yourself. REN: …Hello, Ma'am. My name is Ren. NASTASIA: Ren used to be comrades with [player] and the rest. But based on what he's told me, if accurate, would display the attributes of the one we're looking for. MADAME X: And just why would one of [player]'s comrades want to betray them?

I mean, the word "betray" is explicitly used here.

On Nastasia: Yes. Absolutely. She's strong as hell, but she can't stand up alone to Madame X. Like you said, her powers can only go so far. After all, presumably, her body and soul are in the control of Madame X as well.

In general, Nastasia is an absolutely fascinating character imo... and I have a feeling the Ren might not be the only double agent working for Xen. Nastasia is "the woman who sacrificed everything for the one who loved her." I think we can say with 99.999999% certainty that she is the grown up version of little Anastasia, Katsu's daughter. Out of all the Execs, she seems to be the most devoted to Madame X. That tracks if Madame X is somehow tied to Maria, or is Maria herself. Is Anastasia, by working for her, possibly trying to save Madame X/Maria from herself? Is Madame X/Maria perhaps even being controlled by a darker force, and "unbound soul" like Vitus? In that way, is Nastasia still the little girl trying to reach her best friend?

All this to say I think Nastasia may be more on our side than we think. She is seemingly the most devoted Xen Exec, yet she has gone on multiple dangerous, rogue missions--including one that really did nothing but aid our side--helping Aelita get to the Spring of Rejuvenation and saving the lives of Venam, Erin, Allen, and Alice. She clearly knows that Ren is a double agent, and she hasn't ratted him out (or, possibly, she has ratted him out and Madame X simply does not care, because with Xen having completely control over his soul and body, he can still be used to fulfill his purpose, regardless). There's the fact that Nastasia, an apparent wunderkind with machines and technology, "missed" the fact that the Sigils in Blacksteeple were being sabotaged by Nancy (something Melia immediately noticed). And there's the fact that she clearly trusts and loves Ren (in a maternal way, I think), cheering him up, helping him sneak out of HQ in his actual body. You know, usual mother-son activities. But yeah, I guess the point I'm getting at here is that I could see Nastasia doing her darndest to protect Ren, maybe even sacrificing herself to do so, but I don't think that would be enough to save him, with the level of control Xen has over the both of them at this point.

Back to Ren, there's another things that's been bothering me: the whole twin prophecy with Reina. I have... thoughts... about this. I def could see it playing out exactly how Reina expects: one twin (Ren) fights for the destruction of the world (likely against his will), and the other (Reina) fights to save it. But another part of me (that's read way too many thrillers) feels like this is too cut and dry, and that this presumption is going to be flipped on its head. Let's say Ren does die in the upcoming raid, and he dies fighting to save the world. What if... destroying the world, following Madame X's plan, would undo his death somehow? What if it would save him, or bring him back? We know that souls get recycled in this universe, after all. Would Reina consider switching sides to bring him back? That would be a betrayal, for sure. And that would also play into the whole Life is Strange moral quandary pervasive throughout the game--save the one you love, or the lives of millions? This would also fulfill the prophecy, but in a way that we do not necessarily expect. Because otherwise, I feel like this prophecy is pretty superfluous. By the time we hear it, we already know that Ren is Xen [hehe], so what new information does it really present?

Anyway, yeah, um, thank you so much for the ask! Sorry for the long winded response. There's way too many theories about this game bouncing around in my brain and it's nice to have an outlet for it. So considering the pokemon thing is going around and I love the idea I’m ready to share about the poke au I’ve been working on with @classicrocker2000

Mike has dog style Pokémon to gaurd the family torchiks from nickits. his team so far is

Sir Licky the Lycanroc (night), Doom the houndoom and Blep the nickit

micky is a scientist who aims to find a new Pokémon, he has a lot of science based mon and even built a robot body for his Rotom!

his team is DNA the Ditto, Doc the Pawmot, enstien the Orbeetle, Rolenz the Rotom, Azure the Lycanroc (Day) and poly the Porygon Z

Davy lives on a small ranch in Galar raising horse mon, because of that he has a bunch of mon including one Time slipped Big fish

he has Auroa the Rapidash (galar), Audy the Audino, legion the Basculegion, fluffy the Wooloo and stripes the Furret.

Peter runs a small day care that is focused on the care of mon, he often gets Pokémon that are misunderstood or cute

he has gracy the shaymin, pika the Mimikyu, Cassandra the absol, aura the Lucario, kitty the delikitty and pinky the Cursola and Worry the Psyduck

Some Erin and Anya thoughts... Mostly from Erin's side of things this time rather than focusing on Anyas. They are my blorbos...

-alright so I mentioned before that Anya and Erin just really hit it off and become fast friends surprising to a lot of people. Especially others in the group because normally Anya is usually extremely anxious around new people. But it's kinda surprising to Erin herself? The twos first proper meeting in Darchlight Erin just vibes with this girl she just met far more than she thought she would for someone who happened to fall in the same hole as Broccoli Queen (Derogatory) did. And then of course, Erin starts to learn that hey! This girl also has some interests that she also has! She likes reading, she showed genuine interest in fashion design when the topic happened to come up, like it just kinda naturally became a good friendship after that.

-Being trapped in GDC for like a week and a half because she can't for the life of her find Aelita who just fucking vanished does kinda help with that growing relationship, as between Anya's own mini adventures doing stuff in the city with other characters and that meeting with Cassandra, Anya does join her in trying to look for Aelita. The shared connection of having what is assumed to be the same friend does help even if Erin is growing more and more frustrated at the matter, but even besides that they just kinda fall into hanging out with each other more during this time.

-Erin also just likes Anya's Pokemon. Honestly she does think that Anya has great style and having her team just match her style and aesthetic so well is just a plus. This sort of thing is where the talk of fashion design got brought up. Back to Anya's Pokemon, she just finds it amusing they both have an Absol and Aevian Ampharos. Unlike Anya Erin is able to tell both the Absol apart very easily.

-the free time they get during chapter 12 (reminder this is where I put the majority of the the time frame between the end of chapter 11 and the beginning of 15, as Chapter 13 and 14 are both much shorter in direct time passage) is where Erin and Anya grow close very fast. Like obviously during this time Erin is also getting closer to Melia and Aelita just in generally, but still. Erin just finds herself enjoying Anya's company a lot even if the two aren't neccesarily interacting. They spend a lot of time just being close to one another even when they aren't talking. Erin starts to... Just like being around her and seeing her happy, and Anya likewise feels very comfortable around Erin.

-while Anya's already had a small crush on Erin, it's during this time that crush develops into fully romantic feelings. Erin doesn't directly notice that sentiment (Anya hides it pretty well all things considered) But she does notice Anya's seems to growing a degree of confidence, at the very least when they're together. Erin does get annoyed at Anya's rather constant anxiety sometimes, and absolutely hates it when Anya puts herself down at all, but it is nice to see Anya gaining any form of confidence...

-during their brief stay at past Sheridan, Erin ends up comforting Anya for a nightmare for the first time, even if mostly if that's because she just happened to still be awake when Anya got woken up by it. It's a first for Erin and she's not entirely sure how to go about it, but Anya appreciates the effort nonetheless.

-in general the times they've acted as team together is times Erin enjoys. Anya's stronger then she lets on, and Erin starts to enjoy working with her as much as she does just hanging out with her. The training month in Chapter 15 ends up being pleasant for the two of them because of this, despite some of the more heavy revelations learned during that months.

-Erin's first thoughts on how she actually feels about Anya comes at the end of 14. The two haven't seen each other in couple days since Anya got whisked to the desert after getting kicked out of the library (though that kinda annoyed the crap out of Erin general, Anya was there for a whole 5 minutes and already got kicked out even if it wasn't her fault), and Anya just was so happy to see her?? Anya ended up just hugging Erin out of that pure happiness in seeing her, and Erin's heart ended up skipping a beat when she did. The whole hug thing was a bit of a surprise to the both of them, Anya actually apologizing for it immediately, though Erin reassured her it's fine. Of course though, Melia's battle was a loss and Erin had to leave and the two had to separate after their brief interaction as they both had business, Anya for the tournament and Erin for the ball. And well we all know that ball goes...

-Erin's second moment where she starts go realize she may have caught a heap of feelings for Anya is immediately the next time Erin sees Anya, which is in Eclysia pyramid where Anya in her pure relief and joy at seeing her safe immediately trips on her heels and accidentally barrels herself and Erin right back into the spring Erin just walked out of. Anya just... Hugs her so warmly and there's tears in Anya's eyes and for a very brief moment it almost felt like it was just the two of them. Honestly I feel by this point Anya may have confided to Melia about her feelings for Erin so Melia would just have such a knowing look as the two get up out of the spring. At least Anya isn't covered in sand anymore...

- okay do I need to even explain this? Like come on these two are perfect for each other and you can fite me. Signature Z-Move anyone?

- Illusion and prankster Pokémon feels the best for Dani, although she can’t mega evolve like her sisters, she doesn’t battle with Zoroark anyways.

Cassandra: Houndoom

- Hunting dog with fire to keep her warm when she’s too invested in chasing her prey to notice the drop in temperature? Uh... yes??? Also the strongest, her Houndoom can beat Bela’s Absol 75% of the time.

Bela: Absol

- The Pokémon that can sense incoming disaster feels like one that Alcina would get and obviously give to her oldest. They’re the intelligent duo, only able to win against Cass’s brute strength with strategy.

Alcina: Hydreigon

- Dragon/Dark aesthetic please. If I’m going to be honest, I had a HARD time deciding between Hydreigon, Garchomp, and Haxorus. Ultimately I went with Hydreigon because the three heads remind me of her daughters and she probably named each of them too.

Originally I wanted the daughters to have bug-types cuz obvious is obvious but I didn’t find many big types that I found fit them. When I decided Alcina with Hydreigon, I went “YO WAIT DARK TYPE HAS PERFECT POKEMON” pfff

thoughts on absol and its mega?

Absol's always been a pretty memorable 'mon, despite it's non-evolving status. First, the idea of a Cassandra-truth themed Pokemon is neat and pretty memorable, giving it the excuse to show up in any game before everything goes to hell. And secondly, it has a pretty neat abstract design that's almost spinx-like, with large splayed feet, a blade-like tail, and a ying-yang theme tossed on top of everything for good measure.

Visually, I love Absol's face in particular. It's kind of humanoid in a way that's almost uncanny, but not to the point where it's literally a human face. Combine this with a fairly powerful appearance and it's pretty easy to see this thing as a bad omen if you didn't really know better; but at the same time, it's also easy to imagine it as being benign, which is a hard balance to achieve.

The colors are also very nice, with a simple white/dark grey palette and a bit of red to make the eye pop. The grey is nicely distributed throughout the design without being overbearing.

Now with that said, though, while I really like it as a whole there are a few things visually that don't feel as strong as they could be, even if they're solid in premise. The horn sticks out at a really odd angle, both in the sense that it doesn't match the curve of the face fur and in the sense that it has that weird straight piece before it starts curving. It took me until the mega (which we'll get to momentarily) to realize this and the bald spot on the head were meant to invoke a ying-yang kind of vibe. I think if the horn matched the shape of the white fur it would read a bit more clearly, and the forehead spot feels like it could've been a little rounder to better fit the space.

Also, the fur on the chest looks a bit off to me; aside from sticking out at some very random angles it also feels a bit disconnected from the rest of the body. I feel like the amount of spikeyness needs to go down a bit and it could've used more of a curve, to match the face white. Granted, though, some of this might just be the art (the artwork here is kind of janked up as a whole; the legs are way too short, the feet lack structure, and the aforementioned stiff mane issue, almost as if it were rushed or something).

Mega Abosl is pretty great, in my opinion. It works well as a mega, merely exaggerating what was already there instead of changing the appearance to the point where it could function as a regular evolution. It's also nice and clean without too much clutter overall. And, most importantly, it's one of those megas that feel like it fixes everything about the original that bugged me.

In addition to the artwork and anatomy just being improved overall, the ying-yang head reads much clearer here and overall just feels a lot less awkward than what they were attempting with Absol. The way the mane flows into the wings both improves the stiffness but also gives it more of a purpose. And there are a few other nice little details, like the tail now being more batwing-like and some tufts of fur on the legs to visually match the wings.

Speaking of which, the wings are a nice addition... except they're not actually wings. According to the 'dex, those are actually all fur:

Which I have mixed feelings on. On the one hand, it's kind of a neat extra bit of detail... but on the other hand, why? What's the point of "wings" if it can't use them? If you're going to add them in, might as well go full ham. True wings would also fit the angelic nature of it as well. The most I can say is that this does make sense with the way they run straight into the mane and their placement on the shoulders, which isn't quite right for regular wings.

I also feel like there's a bit too much detail in them, which might be a side-effect of the aforementioned fur thing; compare the sleekness of the fur on the face and the rest of the body to them. The amount of zig-zags could've gone down a solid 20% or so. Maybe add a single one to the face fur as well for consistency.

Aside from that, I also only now noticed that there's a random white patch of fur underneath the horn. Why? That doesn't need to be there. The ear at least balances the colors a bit, that extra bit is completely extraneous. Also, those spikes on the back of the legs are a bit much, being much too long to be dewclaws anymore.

With all that said, though, this is a really memorable Pokemon with a nice design and a mega that, in my opinion, is an overall improvement on the original and enhances the theme without cluttering it.

Also, final side note, I feel like Absol should've either been dark/fairy or, even better, dark/normal. It's strange for it to be pure dark (evil-type in Japanese) when it's a nice Pokemon that's only trying to help people. That would also reflect the ying-yang idea as well.

SVSSS pokemon AU where after he transmigrates Shen Yuan has to basically befriend Shen Jiu’s pokemon so they don’t give away the fact that he’s not Shen Jiu and because of that he actually clues into SJ’s traumatic background and sees the people around him as people instead of characters a LOT sooner than in canon

I don’t think that SQQ would have a full six team, even if he does battle regularly, but I think he’d have three at most that were originally SJ’s and then as the story goes on, he might adopt a few more of his own to signify his acceptance into his new identity and role 

NOW THE FUN PART!!! Here’s what I think the character’s pokemon teams would be! Its long so i’ll put it under the cut

Shen Jiu: Serperior (caught while working under Wu Yanzi as a Snivy), a Ninetails (given as an ‘engagement gift’ to Shen Jiu as a Vulpix by Qiu Haitang, helped him burn down the estate), and a Thievul (never really ‘caught’ this pokemon, but is considered his “first” pokemon as its lurked around him since his time on the streets as a Nickit- helped feed him and Qi-ge as streetkids, lead Qi-ge to SJ when he was locked up in the Qiu household, helped him with his jobs for Wu Yanzi, is seen skulking around Qing Jing causing problems on purpose)

Shen Yuan: Technically all of Shen Jiu’s but also a Zoroark (caught as a Zorua, affectionately named “Bingpup” or “BingBing” or “BB” he was caught after the Skinner incident, symbolizes SY ability to trick others in to believing in an illusion), and an Absol (started following him around before the Abyss arc, making everyone fear that something terrible was going to happen to SQQ, nicknamed “Cassandra” or “Cass”, never leaves the peak except for the time it was skulking around Huan Hua Palace before SQQ escaped and died, symbolizes SY regret that he can’t change things the way he wants)

Yue Qingyuan: Boltund (officially caught after he became a disciple, but used to follow him and SJ around as street kids), a Yamask (found it at the Qiu Estate Ruins, it sought him out and followed him back to the peak, he thought it was Xiao Jiu for the longest time), and Zacian (found him dying in the caves, only reason he survived binding his soul to the Xuan Su sword)

Luo Binghe: Haxorus (captured it after he was accepted at Qing Jing as an Axew, its a shiny, evolved in the Abyss), a Houndoom (found in the Abyss), Darkrai (found it in the dream realm, not technically ‘his’ pokemon but follows him around, is his Signature pokemon as a Heavenly Demon Lord), and a Sylveon (given to him by his mother as an Eevee egg, turned into a Sylveon before the Abyss arc, was so heartbroken over the betrayal but it stayed on QJ peak, it would lay by the Sword Mound and SQQ would talk with it daily, in PIDW it was an Umbreon) 

Liu Qingge: Bisharp (the pokemon he got after becoming a “War God”, YYX as a matching Pawniard which SQQ thinks is the cutest thing), Lucario (technically ‘his’ pokemon as it follows him around but isnt caught, likes to follow him and fight alongside LQG), Aegislash (his signature pokemon, got him when he was 4 years old and first learning sword forms), Gallade (given to him as a Ralts, a matching pair to LMY’s Gardevoir, upon LQG death in PIDW he became LMY’s pokemon but this doesnt happen in SVSSS), Braviary (given to him by SQQ as a Rufflet as a joke but jokes on him he loves the loud guy)

Shang Qinghua: Meowth  (OG’s only pokemon, SQH found it on his way to CQP, started off as a bitter angry thing, but became more lax as time went on, will often hiss at those he feels are being unfair to SQH and is not allowed near MBJ because of this, nicknamed “Lil’ Big Money” or “Lil’”), Whimsicott (became his as a disciple, helped him sneak around for MBJ and steal things/gather info, nicknamed “Q-tip” or “Q”), Snom (given to him by MBJ as a gift years into their partnership but before canon, said it ‘reminded him of you’ SQH was insulted but still loves him, nicknamed “Puddle”), Skwovet (his first pokemon, nicknamed “Cheeks,” he’s had this pokemon since he was 4 and it’s been his closest companion and knows all his secrets, acts as an emotional support pokemon) 

Mobei-Jun: Regice (acquired this pokemon after he got his inheritance, a pokemon that only follows the Mobei-Jun), Glalie (a pokemon he’s had since he was a child, considered his signature pokemon), Galarian Darumaka (he found it in a blizzard, it reminds him of SQH so he keeps it and feeds it berries, it likes to hide in his cloak when he travels, SQH had no idea about this pokemon until well into their romantic relationship, he thought it was just a random pokemon running around in the palace)
