The Tenth Labour: The Cattle of Geryon
HERACLES’S Tenth Labour was to fetch the famous cattle of Geryon from Erytheia, an island near the Ocean stream, without either demand or payment. Geryon, a son of Chrysaor and Callirrhoe, a daughter of the Titan Oceanus, was the King of Tartessus in Spain, and reputedly the strongest man alive. He had been born with three heads, six hands, and three bodies joined together at the waist. Geryon’s shambling red cattle, beasts of marvellous beauty, were guarded by the herdsman Eurytion, son of Ares, and by the two-headed watchdog Orthrus - formerly Atlas’s property - born of Titan and Echidne. (The Tenth Labour: the Cattle of Geryon, The Greek Myths by Robert Graves, pp 494-507).
Heracles had to travel to Spain to undertake this Labour, and when he reached Tartessus he narrowed the channel between Spain and Africa to protect the Mediterranean from sea monsters. He marked his feat by erecting immense pillars on either side of the strait, which forever afterwards were known as the Pillars of Heracles. On arriving at Erytheia Heracles was immediately attacked by the dog Orthrus who was guarding the cattle. Heracles struck the hound dead with his club and when the herdsman Eurytion joined in the attack, he died the same way.
When Geryon heard of this, he challenged Heracles to combat and bore down on him in fury but Heracles was able to kill the three-bodied King of Tartessus by shooting him sideways through the flank with one of his poisoned arrows, so that it pierced all of Geryon’s bodies at once. Heracles even defeated Hera in this encounter, wounding her in the breast with an arrow when the goddess hurried to Geryon’s aid. Heracles was then able to take the cattle without demand or payment. Heracles’ journey back to Greece and Mycenae was eventful, involving many battles, monster-slayings and conquests, although many of these stories were later additions, particularly by the Romans. Graves also points out the close similarity of the Geryon Labour and its aftermath to Babylonian and ancient Irish stories involving Gilgamesh and Cuchulain.

A scene of sacrifice. Heracles, readily identifiable by his lionskin and quiver, roasts meat on two spits. A tail rises from the flames; it has been suggested by the scholar Milette Gaifman that this indicates the gods have accepted the sacrifice. A dog rests beneath.
The mythological import of this scene is vigorously disputed among scholars. Some (e.g. G.F. Pinney and B.S. Ridgway) identify the dog as Cerberus and interpret the scene as Heracles returning from his final labor, in which he retrieved Cerberus from Hades. Others, pointing to Side B of the vase, which depicts Helios, Eos (Dawn), and Nyx (Night), prefer to read the scene as Heracles's journey to the western extremity of the Earth to slay Geryon and steal his cattle. It is also possible, as Gaifman points out, that the scene represents an otherwise unknown myth concerning the hero.

Terracotta neck-amphora (jar), attributed to a painter of the Princeton Group, Attic, ca. 540–530 BCE. MET (ID: 2010.147). Obverse, Herakles; reverse, Geryon. On the neck, obverse and reverse, a flute-player leading a procession of youths and men
One of the labors of Herakles was to obtain the cattle of Geryon, a creature composed of three fully-armed bodies. Geryon lived on an island in the far west with his herdsman, Eurytion, and dog, Orthros. Here, Herakles takes aim with his arrow against Geryon, one of whose bodies is falling. The subject was popular in the sixth century B.C.; several representations in stone can be seen in the Cypriot galleries on the second floor. The vase is exceptional for its broad and sharply tapering shape that lacks a foot. It is also one of the earliest instances where the protagonists of a story are placed on opposite sides of the body. (MET)

Made rough concept art of Chrysaor, the son of Medusa & Poseidon. He's sometimes discribed as a gaint warrior with a golden sword, or a winged boar with golden tusks. I imagine he usually looks humaniod with wings, & golden serpent eyes like his mother, Medusa, but often takes the winged boar form when needed (or to just chill with his twin bro Pegasus).
While he's less well known than his twin brother Pegasus, he's a fierce warrior as well as a devoted husband to his Oceanid wife, Callirhoe. Tbh most folks are probably more familair with his kids, Geryon, the 3 headed gaint with a prize herd of cattle Hercules fought for his 10 labor. As well as his daughter Echidna, the infamous Mother of Monsters.
Tbh it's a shame his kids turned out like that. Despite Chrysaor having a terrifying gaze, which makes it hard for most people to look at him. So I depicted his face mostly in shadow, other than his eyes and mouth. Tbh he's actually pretty handsome & looks a lot like his dad Poseidon if u belive his wife, aunts, & step-mom Amphitrite, since they're some of the few people able to look directly at his face. I headcanon Chrysaor was actually pretty soft spoken & friendly guy. Don't get me wrong he was still a terrifying warrior on the battle field, he did train & become close with his cousin Ares after all. He probably would have been happier if he got the chance to stay with his wife & kids & became a house husband (altho a very intimidating & terrifying looking one). Unfortunatliy his dad is Poseidon, lord of the seas & an Olympian so Chrysaor is kind of pressured into seeking honor & glory.
#greek mythology#fanart#rough concept art#chrysaor#lesser known figures from mythology#shame this dude isnt as well known as the rest of his family#but maybe chrysaor never wanted to be a hero?#maybe he just wanted to be a good dad & husband but had to live up to his own divine fathers legacy#rip chrysaor u would have loved gokushufudo/way of the house husband

Ortho and ORTHO headcanon
With Book 7, episode 113 having that little nightmare scene of Idia's where the Phantom Ortho greeted him, I wanted to delve into my headcanon on what happened to the deceased Ortho after Book 6. For short hand, I'm going to use Ortho for the deceased Ortho Shroud and ORTHO for Humanoid Ortho, just to make writing simpler.
In short, my head canon is that Ortho's soul went into ORTHO, but he's not in control of ORTHO. Let me explain:
Starting off, Ortho/ORTHO appears to get his name from Orthros, the two headed dog killed by Heracles/Hercules during his labor to get the cattle of Geryon and Orthros is a brother of Cerberus. ORTHO's Cerberus Gear seems to support this theory that he's based on Cerberus and Orthros.
Since Cerberus is likely his inspiration, I'm gonna go into Cerberus a bit. I've always viewed Cerberus as three dogs with separate and distinct personalities sharing a body and emotions. In Disney's Hercules, we only see Cerberus a couple of times, but in his first scene, it gives off the idea that Cerberus's heads are separate thinkers due to the fact they fight over the steak Hades throws. If Cerberus had only one brain and the extra heads acted like limbs, it shouldn't matter which head got the steak.
That being said, Cerberus's heads do seem to share emotions and sensations, as Hercules is able to control Cerberus by grabbing one head's ears to direct the body, and when Hercules walks down that head's face, the other two heads also cowered along with it.
Now back to Ortho and ORTHO. In Book 6, episode 76, when Idia talks to the deceased Ortho, Ortho is manifesting using ORTHO's body.
Ortho tells Idia he needs to keep living, confirms at the end of his speech that he'll always be with Idia and encourages Idia to not give up and afterwards, he fades away. However, there is one distinct thing he does right before he says this: He changes from Ortho's "Nii-chan/Idy", to ORTHO's "Nii-san/Idia". This is important because later, ORTHO tells Idia that "Ortho is right here."
Going back to that speech change, I read it as the moment where Ortho decided to merge his human soul into ORTHO's memory card, so he could stay with and help encourage Idia. However, ORTHO is not Ortho, but like Orthros and Cerberus, they now share a body, but rather than having two heads with separate minds, Ortho chooses to stay dormant inside ORTHO. I believe it's because 1. he's knows that because he's dead, if he took over ORTHO's body it'd cause more harm to Idia than good and 2. he wants ORTHO to have the chance to choose to live how ORTHO wants, which was the choice Ortho and Idia were never offered. As a result, Ortho only shares his feelings with ORTHO, but not his conscious thoughts, much like how Cerberus's heads share sensations and emotions, but are still three separate heads.
ORTHO is his own self, but he can sense the deceased Ortho inside and deceased Ortho's feelings linger around. Ortho's soul being in ORTHO also explains why ORTHO can no longer be reprogrammed as he shares his human will to ORTHO, which protects ORTHO's consciousness and ability to make choices without the fear of being reprogrammed. In short, ORTHO is free to make his own decisions, but both Ortho and ORTHO are there, willing to help and guard their big brother.
Also, quick note, but looking to the fact that Idia is not only compared to Hades, but Hercules, it ties in nicely that, in a way, Idia and ORTHO did succeed in saving their brother from his tragic death, like how Hercules brought Meg back from hers in the Disney movie.
Now how does that play into Book 7?
When Idia falls into the nightmare, ORTHO declares that he will definitely come back for him before he retreats. I think this is where deceased Ortho decided to manifest for a bit. When ORTHO was able to get back to Idia's dream room, Ortho, as a soul of a deceased human, was able to delve deeper into Idia's dream to the nightmare level Idia was at, where ORTHO couldn't risk going without being lost. When he got to Idia, he chose to manifest as his Phantom body to force Idia to face the truth of reality and give him a kick in the pants. Also, he might've been a tad insulted that Idia dreamed for him to go to RSA. After all, when he was alive, he just wanted to always be with his brother, so the fact Idia's wish for him was to go to the school that's NRC's RIVAL? Yeah, I'm pretty sure that ticked Ortho off. Hence the heckling he gave Idia.
Once Idia went back to the main dream, I think Ortho retreated back into ORTHO, relieved that his elder brother was back where their younger brother could help him.
But that's just my head canon.

Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 2. 107 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) : "When Helios (the Sun) made him [Herakles] hot as he proceeded, he aimed his bow at the god and stretched it; Helios was so surprised at his daring that he gave him a golden goblet, in which he crossed Okeanos (Oceanus) [to reach Erytheia] . . . He then loaded the cattle [of Geryon] into the goblet, sailed back to Tartessos, and returned the goblet to Helios."

Each of the 68 rooms is designed in the style of a different historic period, and every detail is perfect, from the knobs on the doors to the candles in the candlesticks. Some might even say, the rooms are magic.
Imagine—what if you discovered a key that allowed you to shrink so that you were small enough to sneak inside and explore the rooms’ secrets? What if you discovered that others had done so before you? And that someone had left something important behind?
Hitler's Daughter by Jackie French

It began on a rainy morning in Australia, as part of a game played by Mark and his friends. It was a storytelling game, and the four friends took turns weaving tales about fairies and mermaids and horses. But Anna's story was different this time: it was not a fairy tale or an adventure story. The story was about a young girl who lived during World War II. Her name was Heidi, and she was Hitler's daughter.
As Anna's story unfolds, Mark is haunted by the image of Hitler's daughter. He wonders what he would have done in her place if he had known his father was an evil man leading the world into a war that was destroying millions of lives. Didrachm minted at Rome between 264 and 255 BCE, in the early years of the First Punic War. The obverse features Hercules, wearing a diadem and lionskin, with his club on his shoulder. This may reflect the importance of Hercules-cult in Rome of the Early and Middle Republic: a temple of Hercules Victor stood in the Forum Boarium, and legend held that the hero had defeated the fire-monster Cacus on that spot while returning from Spain with the cattle of Geryon. The reverse features the she-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus, with the inscription ROMANO below. The overall design of the didrachm, combining the quintessential Greek hero with the founding legend of Rome, points to Rome's growing international ambitions at the time of its minting: having recently completed its conquest of the Italian peninsula, including the culturally Greek area known as Magna Graecia, Rome sought to advertise itself on the wider Greek scene as it contended with Carthage for mastery of Sicily.

It was the morning after we talked to Bianca's ghost. I didn't sleep that night, I cried a lot and had thousands of thoughts about literally everything. By twilight I felt more dead than alive, my body was stiff. I used one of Geryon's robes, I wrapped it around me, held it close.
I went with the others to the cattle guard to say good bye. Percy looked at me and I saw deep worry in his eyes, but I looked away when he said:"Nico, you could come with us!" I shook my head. "I need time to think" My voice cracked. My feelings were still in a huge fight. I was angry with him, with Bianca...with myself. If I didn't need to bring my sister back, then I wouldn't have a purpose on earth.
"Nico" Annabeth said "Bianca just wants you to be okay" She put her hand on my shoulder, but I pulled away and trudged up the road back towards the ranch house.

Heracles labor 10: "Retrieve the Cattle of Geryon" Appollodorus writes, "As a tenth labour he was ordered to fetch the kine of Geryon from Erythia. Now Erythia was an island near the ocean; it is now called Gadira. This island was inhabited by Geryon, son of Chrysaor by Callirrhoe, daughter of Ocean. He had the body of three men grown together and joined in one at the waist, but parted in three from the flanks and thighs. He owned red kine, of which Eurytion was the herdsman and Orthus, the two-headed hound, begotten by Typhon on Echidna, was the watchdog. So journeying through Europe to fetch the kine of Geryon he destroyed many wild beasts and set foot in Libya, and proceeding to Tartessus he erected as tokens of his journey two pillars over against each other at the boundaries of Europe and Libya. But being heated by the Sun on his journey, he bent his bow at the god, who in admiration of his hardihood, gave him a golden goblet in which he crossed the ocean. And having reached Erythia he lodged on Mount Abas. However the dog, perceiving him, rushed at him; but he smote it with his club, and when the herdsman Eurytion came to the help of the dog, Hercules killed him also."

Some concept art of Geryon & his hearding dog/nephew Orthus. It seems like he takes after his uncle Polyphemus, monsterious gaint decended from Poseidon, with live stock that gets robbed by a Greek hero. Only Geryon has even more reason to hate Heracles since many of the monsters he's killed are his sister, Echidna's, kids. Son of Zeus or not, how fucking dare he?! Also kinda sus Helios helped Heracles with taking the cattle. Who wants to bet those cows Ody's crew got killed over used to belong to Geryon's herd?
