Spirits, Chapter 1

Enjoy the first chapter!

I woke up to the sound of my alarm. Dreading the day, I shoved the bed covers off of me and stopped the alarm on my phone. It’s funny how school’s encourage sleep when they only give you about 6 hours of sleep.

After forcing myself to actually get off of my bed, I grabbed some clothes from my closet to change into. Just an ordinary black t-shirt and blue baggy jeans. Nothing special since I just have to go to school.

Peering at my desk with my finished homework I finished at about 2 in the morning. Curse the college homework. I shoved the papers into my backpack and headed downstairs finding my mother finishing up breakfast.

“Morning Nix!” She cheerfully greeted me, handing me a plate of two pancakes. I set my extremely heavy backpack down against the island in the kitchen and gratefully took the plate of pancakes.

“Morning mom.” I mumbled, taking a bite of her world famous pancakes. I really need to know how she makes them so good. So far she’s been stubborn about telling anyone. Not even dad.

“How late did you stay up last night? You have bags under your eyes.” She asked in a worried tone, trying to check my eyes. I leaned away from her hands and smiled, “I was just finishing up something for physics and chemistry. I’ll go to bed early today, promise.” She gave me a second look before smiling and sitting down next to me.

“Good. Don’t want you to be asleep the entire day for your birthday on Sunday.” She squeezed me in a tight hug. Right. Only 4 days until I turn eighteen. Just great.

I won’t lie, birthdays aren’t really that special to me. It’s usually just my parents and I gathered around in the dining room with cake and a couple of presents. For some reason my parents never told me anything about my grandparents or if I even had any other family besides them. Every time I brought up the subject they just stayed quiet and moved on. I never thought twice about it.

Finishing breakfast, I waved goodbye and walked to the bus stop. We lived on the edge of town. A lot of forest area, but it’s not I minded. It was actually peaceful to listen to the many birds chirping, or the wolves at night. Oddly soothing, but maybe that’s because my parents have lived here for as long as I can remember.

The bus ride was noisy as it always was. Since it was just a small town, even the little kids rode in the same bus as the older kids. Usually there was some sort of argument between the little kids over who has the best breakfast or something. In the back with the people in my grade (Which was me and three other people) had to try our best to drown out the noise.

I plugged in my headphones and put my playlist on shuffle. I tried to get a little bit more rest while on the bus, laying my head against the window, trying to not mind my head banging against the glass every five seconds. After a while, I gave up and realized that we were already at school.

Today was awfully chatty. I heard murmurs of how the clouds were gathering, and it would probably snow. It wouldn’t be surprising since it’s almost below twenty. Not my ideal weather, but it’s what we have.

My first class of the day was of course my physics and chemistry class. I handed in the homework I finished last night and sat down in my little corner of the room.

I’m not really a social guy. Of course I have friends. Or should I say friend? Percy is like the older brother I never had. He kind of stuck around with me when he found out I was bullied, but that was only because I would say I saw things. I have no recognition of the memories though.

After the first five periods passed by, it was all smooth sailing from there. The three easiest classes of the day. Art, english, and world history. I know, weird, but it’s only easy because they rarely hand out homework, and when they do they give us a while to complete it.

“Nix! Over here!” Percy waved at me from the front doors of the school. I walked up to him, smiling. He was a really nice guy.

“Hey Percy.” I greeted him. As usual, he elbowed me lightly. Percy was the athletic type. He’s played sports all through high school, he’s funny, and is definitely social. Probably one of the most popular kids at this small school.

“Is it cool if I come by to your house on Sunday?” He asked, smirking at me. I knew exactly where this was going.

“No, don’t you dare show up with a present.” I warned. He gave me a cheeky smirk, “Too bad, already bought it,” He wrapped his arm around my shoulders, “You bought me one, and now I’m getting you back.”

I smiled to myself. I just bought him a jacket with his favorite football team on it, but apparently they were limited time and he didn’t get the chance to buy one. So who knows what crazy thing he bought me.

“Alright, well I have practice to get to, see you tomorrow!” He ran off, leaving me to walk the rest of the way home. I sighed and began the ten mile journey.

It did end up snowing on my way home, which I wasn’t too happy about, but I only had three more miles. Why did we live so far away from town anyways? The only neighbors were the nice old couple that owned some horses. I remember because when I was little they used to let me ride them.

I reached for the door handle, but looked over at the driveway to see a white SUV parked along with my dads silver Dodge. Who was this? Some type of health insurance guy? I took my mind off of it and opened the door, only to find a tall man dressed in a black business suit sitting down at the kitchen island.

“What’s going on?” I saw my mom and dad sitting across from him. I set my backpack down by the door and took off my shoes.

“Nix, go to your room.” My dad ordered. I grabbed my backpack again and hesitantly walked up to my room. What was going on? Usually when dad come shove from his night shifts, he asleep on the couch with his usual show Ghost Adventures. No, something was actually wrong.

Soon enough, I heard a slam, followed by yelling. I pressed my ear to my door.

“Our son is perfectly fine! You can’t take us away from him!” My mothers voice.

“Hm… Give me a call if he starts having… similar symptoms. You shouldn’t have a hard time remembering them.” Followed by the door closing.

What did any of that mean? Having symptoms of what? Why would that man want to take me away? Did my parents do something? What if it’s about their past?

Questions swirled around in my mind. I shoved them into my ‘Deal with it later’ folder, and listened to my parents talking.

“Do we tell Nix? If we do he might be…”

“Marcy, dear, we can’t tell him. The exorcists will try to come get us early. We have to let him handle it himself. They got us, but we can’t let them have him.”

I back away from the door when I heard my parents footsteps climbing up the stairs. What was going on? What did I need to find out about? Who was taking my parents away, and why are exorcists involved in this mess that apparently I’m a part of?

Groaning, I grabbed my backpack and took out my homework. My parents were definitely hiding something form me, and I was going to find out one way or another. Whether I liked it or not.

The main characters:

Prince Morgan Fox Chamari (I made the picrews a while ago, so they might not be up to date, but it’ll do for now) (also they didn’t have that many option for make up and stuff, so i just drew on a lot of it)

He sounds like a snob but he’s really not

He’s 5’8, uses he/him, caucasian, pansexual, a leo (yes astrology is swag), he is way too nice for his own good, and trusts people way too easily (which might turn out to be a problem)

He has light brown, curly hair, green eyes, and he’s a prince, so probably like expensive clothing

Morgan does have magic, but I’m not really sure how it works yet, I only know that he kinda sucks at it at first, and he needs to find some kind of scepter to help him with it

Willow Ivy Stara

5’1, she/her, black, aromantic asexual, a virgo, also a nice person in general, but she’s not an idiot about it, you know? She is probably the one that keeps the single braincell of the team in place

Dark, coily hair, dark skin, brown eyes, the prettiest smile you’ll ever see, and she likes wearing dresses and flowers in her hair! She’s also a very gifted healer (maybe i’ll talk more about powers in my world later)(because she doesn’t just have healing, she can do damage too (basically the opposite of healing) which is really rare in my world, but it also strengthens her healing powers)

She joined the team because she ran away from her parents, because they were forcing her to marry another healer (cus she’s aroace right) (and the other healer is a gay man who she later finds out also ran away, and joined the villain!)

Raine Dayla-Jules

Probably the character I’ve put the most effort into, which also means she’s one of the characters who gets the most traumatized (love you Raine)

5’8, she/her, caucasian, lesbian, a leo, on the good side, but leaning towards morally grey, extreme trust issues, she is broke and homeless and a thief, says she is an orphan, but really just doesn’t want to get into her tragic backstory

Lots of blonde, curly hair, blue eyes, freckles, various scars all over her body (which she mostly gets through the story)

She had a normal childhood until she was six years old, when she was kidnapped (because of her powers, hydrokinesis and cryokinesis (is that what it is in english? idk, ice and water like a waterbender), she hasn’t seen her family after that (but she will at the end, I’m not that evil)

I mentioned enemies to lovers on the last post, and Raine is part of that<3

Ember Aurora Ilani

The villain with redemtion arc, because every story needs that, but believe it or not she’s actually a pretty good person, and she does what she thinks would be the best for everyone

5’6, she/her, asian, demisexual lesbian, a scorpio, she has pyrokinesis (again, hope that’s the right word), and that’s where the arson i talked about comes from, occasionally borrows that one braincell from Willow

Like, yes, she technically is a good person, but that will not stop her from setting a house on fire on purpose

Dark brown, long and straight/slightly wavy hair, hazel eyes, tan skin, terrible childhood of course

Like, ‘older brother dying in a fire that she accidently caused, parents hating her and abusing her because of it, running away at age 10, becoming best friends with the villain’ kind of terrible childhood

The other part of the enemies to lovers! (Don’t worry, it’s gonna be a slow-burn)(the burning part might be literal)(but it’s gonna be fine, we have lots of character development and no power imbalance, they both hurt and help each other)

Hawke Edavine

Typical badboy, poor but wholesome family, I might kill his dad though, because all of the main characters has all their parents intact

6’1 (I like that it’s a foot height difference between him and Willow), he/him, latino, straight (I guess they needed some rep too), a capricorn, probably nicer than he looks

Dark messy hair (like, think Percy Jackson), brown eyes, tan skin, bushy eyebrows, think about what a straight woman would find attractive in a man (what do straight women like? Flynn Rider? Think that, just younger)

Used to be best friends with Raine when they were like 11-14 years old maybe, but drama happened, they fell out, they will spend the first few chapter hating each other (also we all know and hate queerbating, so obviously I’m gonna straight-bait these two at first<3)

I grew up listening to metal and rock, and that's where my heart is. Expecially symphonic metal. But I also listen a a lot more.

BOOKS

Favourite book genre?

I have a thing for the very first horror/scifi/fantasy that bloomed in gothic litterature at the end of the 1800s. I have no idea if that counts as a genre, but I have always had a thing for that part of litterature, and when I don't know what to read I usually just go for something that falls under this category

Favourite writer?

Neil Gaiman, and many others, but if I have to pick just one that's him. His writing style, the topics, everything is just perfect for my taste in writing.

Favourite book?

I usually say Frankenstein by Mary Shelly cause that is a great way to present the type of story I like. I was also lucky cause I read that book in the perfect moment of my life to connect with it amazingly. At the same time I feel like I am lying because to only pick one single book is so reductive.

Favourite book series?

I have commitment issues, I don't usually go for series. I would like to cheat by saying The Lord Of The Rings, but Tolkien considered it a whole book. Other than that the only full series I have read is Harry Potter. ( I have also read a few books from the Percy Jackson series, which I enjoyed at the time. And last year I started reading The Witcher series, which I am really liking but I am only two books in and I don't know if that would count).

Comfort book?

The Humans by Matt Haig. Anyone who knows me, or has been following me for a while knows about this, amd no I will never shut up about it until everyone has read it. It just gives me hope in a way didn't think was possible. (Also shout out to The Hobbit cause it just makes me feel so good)

Perfect book to read on a rainy day?

Okay so not an easy question. I think I would either go for a short book that I could read in one sitting or a collection of short stories. For the first category my first thought was Tarocchi Magici E Cavallereschi : La Vera Storia Di Rolando by Marcello Simoni. I have no idea if this was translated but It was a great retelling of the medieval story of Rolando I read last year, I'd love to re-read it. For the second category any short story collection by Neil Gaiman. I particularly love Trigger Warning.

Favourite character?

How can you ask me to pick just one? I love the Creature of Frankenstein, I connected so much to that character. But also Herger from Crichton's Eaters of the Dead is a character I love. I adore his positive spirit and his way of seeing life. At this point I should also mention Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, one of the characters that I feel more close to me.

I have no idea. I don't know if I feel different about the genres I watch the most. You know what? I'm gonna go with animated movies because at the end of the day that's always the best option when you don't know what to watch.

There is so many movie. In my family we religiously rewatch a bunch of movies every year, how could I pick just one? I'm gonna go with Young Frankenstein cause that movies is hilarious, and everytime I rewatch it I laugh as if I didn't know all the jokes already.

Honestly it depends on what type of comfort I am looking for. I could go with a couple of my favourite disney classics like The Emperor's New Groove and The Lion King. But also The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings movies. This list could go on for days honestly.

The list would be way too long, I am a serial rewatcher. I can say a few I haven't mentioned yet. Big Trouble In Little China, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Wasabi, The 13th Warrior, Lo Chiamavano Trinità and A LOT of other movies.

"Like" is a weak word for how I feel about these. 😳 It's more like— bear with me, analogies get away from me sometimes— say my fic is a double chocolate chip cookie that I've been making and giving out at a Free Cookies Booth, along with my recipe. This is the equivalent of you coming up to my booth and handing me a plate full of cookies you made with my recipe, only you added an extra kind of chocolate chip and decorated them with delicious frosting and sprinkled on some glitter!

...I feel like I'm going to end up using "you just put glitter on my cookies" as an idiom for being over the moon about a gift. 😂

BUT ANYWAY, one of the fastest ways to endear yourself to me is to give me music in any form, context or fashion, so this is delightful for me for lots of reasons— and we continue being on the same wavelength, because I've been thinking Percy has a youtube channel titled "one-man covers" or something. He can't read music, but he can play fifteen instruments by ear and he has fun editing the videos together where he plays all the parts.

Where it diverts, where your AU takes over, is the fame and the specific albums, and GOD that alternate storyline sounds gutwrenching. 🥺 I love the idea of Percy being the guy who has a ton of albums in twenty different genres and he aces all of them— I'm only familiar with a handful of songs off any of those albums, but I'm always excited to have new music to listen to, so thank you for that!!

I feel like Nico is the kind of excellent manager who is excellent because he's a pain in the butt— he doesn't let Percy get away with anything, and is maybe even the only person who can kick his ass into gear when he's a depression puddle. Will's dad as a pop star, thus giving Will expert insight? DELIGHTFUL. Percy being that charming, talkative, extroverted yet simultaneously intensely private celeb? INSPIRED!

I would love to know the track listing when you do this playlist! I can use it to make one for the Official Spotify Account (see @syncopateyourlife ).

(One of the songs I knew already is Best Day, btw, and I made the exact same association. There may have been tears, by which I mean there were.)

You didn't specify for what story, so I'll be answering this for my ao3 Harry Potter fanfiction. Sorry not sorry, even though this is a D3F blog. I'll try my best to answer the question for D3F too, but I can't make any promises that they'll be good.

This will be a long post, so I'm placing a cut.

1. If you had to create a soundtrack for your story, what songs would you choose? Why?

Okay, das ist meine Lieblingsfrage aus dem gesamten Post, also THANK YOU SO MUCH! Tatsächlich plane ich das innerlich schon ein bisschen mit, während ich schreibe, wenn ich mir Playlists zusammenstelle.

Die Drei ??? - Auxiliary AU: Aus irgendeinem Grund habe ich Jelena schon immer mit Billie Eilish verbunden. Keine Ahnung warum, aber das hat sich einfach in meinem Kopf so festgesetzt, und weil die Geschichte aus Jelenas Perspektive ist, wird also mindestens ein Billie Eilish Song vorkommen. Womöglich ist der erste Song von ihr, an den man bei Jelena denkt "bad guy", oder "you should see me in a crown" oder etwas Ähnliches. Gute Idee, aber nicht ganz. Billie Eilish steht bei mir oft eher für Jelenas emotionale Seite. Also wäre ein Lied im Soundtrack "i love you". Ich glaube, die Titel erklärt den Sinn dahinter schon ganz gut. Andere Lieder wären "Woman" von Kesha, "Brother" von Kodaline und "Chasing Cars" von Snow Patrol. Ein sehr obscures Lied ist das "Whack World Medley" von Citizen Queen. Keine Ahnung wieso, aber die Vibes stimmen irgendwie. Natürlich wären auch ein paar russische Lieder drin. Angemessene Covers von Kalinka könnten sowohl als Hintergrundmusik zu einem kleinen Kampf, als auch die Musik von einem Flashback sein, je nachdem welche Stelle man nimmt. Es gibt aber ein paar perfekte Lieder, die definitiv rein müssten. Pianistec auf YouTube hat die Drei ??? Intros gecovered. Perfection. Eins davon ist sogar auf Spotify. Sollte in jede D3F-Playlist rein.

Harry Potter time! Obviously, Harry Potter already has a soundtrack. But that would take away all the fun, so... First of all, "Woman Like Me" by Little Mix. It fits the sassy personality and later persona Asteria takes on. Fitting to that, "Teen Idle" and "Oh No!" by MARINA. You can interpret your own reasons into that. "Battlefield" by SVRCINA for Deathly Hallows. "Line Without a Hook" by Ricky Montgomery for the relationship between Percy and Asteria, but it's not meant in a romantic way. "The Night Is Still Young" by Nicky Minaj, maybe for a victory party after a quidditch game, or just for a nice evening with Fred and George. "8TEEN" by Khalid for... something. Just. I like it. "High Enough" by K.Flay for something that I can't tell you what it is without throwing spoilers everywhere. Let's just say the kind of twisted vibe is fitting for it. Could be more twisted. It gets more twisted if I tell you that the song would not be about a person in that case. It wouldn't be about a twisted version of being in love, but about an obsession. A mania even. That's why it fits. Arctic Monkeys in general also would fit the story. "Judas" by Lady Gaga. "Everything At Once" by Lenka. It sounds innocent, right? Well, in this case it's about wanting to be perfect for everyone at once. "Mr Loverman" by Ricky Montgomeryfor Asteria's heartache in later years of the story. "Positions" by Ariana Grande and "Detention" by Melanie Martinez for the vibe. "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" for a cheesy slow dance between Fred and Asteria because obviously they would. But THE most important song of all, which is why I saved it for last: "Arsonist's Lullaby" by Hozier. No explainations given, you'll have to read and find out yourself.

5. What makes your main ship so compatible? Or, what makes them so incompatible? What do they see in each other?

Mein main ship im Auxiliary AU ist tatsächlich Peter/Jelena, auch wenn das eigentlich gar nicht so rauskommt. Peter und Jelena passen zusammen, weil sie sich ergänzen. Man könnte auch sagen, Gegensätze ziehen sich an, aber sie haben auch was gemeinsam. Peter ist ängstlich und vorsichtig. Jelena ist ziemlich rücksichtslos und aggressiv. Man könnte meinen, dass das absolut nicht zusammen passt. Tatsächlich sorgt das aber für eine relativ gute dynamic. Wenn Peter Angst hat, passt Jelena auf ihn auf und wenn Jelena etwas Unvorsichtiges tun will, hat Peter vergleichsweise gute Chancen, sie davon abzuhalten. Peter bewundert Jelena für ihren Mut, macht sich aber auch ständig Sorgen um sie, weil sie so unvorsichtig ist. Jelena findet Peter richtig liebenswert, wenn nicht fast schon niedlich. Sie hat es sich als Ziel gesetzt, ihm endlich mal die Aufmerksamkeit zu geben, die er braucht, und sich um ihn zu kümmern. Deshalb sieht man die beiden oft zusammen und Jelena hält seine Hand, wenn er Angst hat. Das geht mittlerweile schon längst ohne Kommunikation.

Actually, the story doesn't have a main ship. Or at least it's hard to name one and I don't want to say something wrong because I don't want to claim knowing anything about what polyamorous relationships are like and what you call which kind of relationship. Essentially, Asteria, being the main character, is in a relationship with both Fred Weasley and Oliver Wood, though she only starts dating Fred when Oliver has already graduated and the two of them are just friends. I guess I'll answer the question for both relationships and try to keep it short.

I'll start with the relationship that has been going on longer, which is Oliver/Asteria. Oliver loves Asteria for her sense of right and wrong and for the fact that she might just be the only person on the entire planet not to get annoyed or bored when he rambles about quidditch for hours on end or spends a lot of time training or at practice. He's amazed with her understanding for his passion. Asteria, on the other hand, thinks it's exactly his passion that makes him so wonderful. He's not afraid to show it to literally everyone. She also thinks it's adorable how he gets so excited over it every single time someone mentions the subject, no matter how many times he's talked about it before. She never gets tired of listening to him. Another big reason for her to love him is how he reacted to her illness (I won't say here which illness, read yourself). She just thought it was the sweetest thing ever. He also makes her feel safe, which is rare.

Now, Fred/Asteria. A dangerous relationship. A Weasley and a Malfoy. Both of them know that and it's a big factor why others might deem them incompatible. But, actually, they go very well together. Fred and George are the biggest pranksters of the entire school, everyone knows that. Asteria, on the other hand, is a trickster. She breaks almost as many rules as them, but she does it very sneakily. Nobody has ever caught her. Asteria is amazingly good at lying and deception and she enjoys tricking people. So while Fred does the big pranks that are just for fun and sometimes also for revenge, Asteria tricks people mostly for revenge or to follow along with her view of right and wrong. Fred admires Asteria's abilities when it comes to rule-breaking and trickery, but also her craftsmanship and inventive mind. He's essentially forgotten that her last name means that they should be enemies and has completely detatched her from her parents in his mind. Something else he appreciates is that Asteria grounds him and gives him advice when he's about to do something that he'll most likely regret in the future or that will have major consequences. Asteria admires Fred as a person, but also for what he represents through his family - love, acceptance and protectiveness. The kind of family Asteria wishes she had. Fred cheers her up when she is down and makes her worry less. Unlike Oliver, he doesn't make her feel safe. At least not in the same way. But that's exactly what she loves about Fred. He's unpredictable and wild, something that Asteria's childhood was very much lacking. He's supportive of everything she does that other people would call her mad for. Whatever "crazy" or "stupid" thing she wants to try, he does it with her or has already done it and can show her how to do it right. But no matter how dangerously crazy their adventures get, he watches out for her. They're a chaos couple, but also very intimate. Lots of people are confused that their relationship can be both chaotic and calm at the same time.

6. How do you feel the environment your character(s) grew up in shaped them as a human? How does the environment they’re in now shape them currently?

Jelenas Vater ist sehr streng und emotional eher distanziert. Das hat sie natürlich beeinflusst. Einerseits hat sie es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, Regeln zu brechen. Sie ist ein Rebell, weil sie diesen Käfig, in den ihr Vater sie gesetzt hat, hasst. Gleichzeitig hat sie aber ihre emotionale Distanzierung von ihm. Als Kind hat sie natürlich immer noch versucht. Kinder sind eben deutlich emotionaler. Aber spätestens mit dem Tod ihrer Mutter war ihr Vater emotional gesehen nur noch eine Steinsäule und Jelena ist selbst emotional kalt geworden. Sie ist es einfach nicht mehr gewohnt, mit irgendwen über ihre Emotionen zu reden. Musik ist ein sehr großes Medium für sie was das angeht. Es hilft ihr, die ganzen aufgestauten Emotionen einfach rauszulassen. Ihr extremer Beschützerinstinkt und die Einteilung von Leuten in Gut und Böse kommt vom Tod ihrer Mutter - und womöglich aus Filmen, die sie in der Richtung nach dem Tod beeinflusst haben. Schließlich ist es in Filmen normal und sogar gut, dass der Hauptcharakter böse Menschen bekämpft, verletzt und womöglich tötet. So ähnlich verhält es sich mit Jelena. Sie selbst zögert nicht, jemanden zu verletzen, wenn er ihr oder anderen droht. Aber wehe jemand kommt ihren Freunden zu nahe. Seit sie mehr Zeit mit den Jungs verbringt, hat sie sich definitiv zum Besseren verändert. Sie hat endlich jemanden, mit dem sie über ihre Emotionen reden kann - zumindest theoretisch. Die Jungs haben es auch geschafft, sie zumindest etwas aus ihrem aggressiven Kampfmodus zu holen und ihr dabei geholfen, den Tod ihrer Mutter endlich richtig zu verarbeiten.

Growing up a Malfoy will always shape a character. But that's especially the case with Asteria because of her illness and the fact that she's two years older than Draco. This means that she was born during the First Wizarding War. Her illness was clearly visible and known at birth, so she immediately became an unwanted child. This was always a big factor in her childhood at Malfoy Manor. She was locked in the manor for most of her childhood and whenever she went out, she had to take potions to make her appear normal. Still, she had her parents' blood purist beliefs, so she thought this was the right thing to do, even if she suffered under it. However, she soon breaks out of these prejudices during her first two years at Hogwarts, seeing with her own eyes that blood status does not matter. Hermione finally gives her the final push in her third year. Now, Asteria has practically turned fully against her parents and is taking Draco with her, even when he is still mostly trying to keep up his snobbish bully persona. This position of hers becomes stronger and stronger as she becomes close friends with Fred and George and starts dating Oliver. It's hard to say where "growing up" ends and where "currently" starts, so let me just say: Asteria is under constant influence from the outside and inside, wether she wants it or not, especially with Voldemort's return. Things spin wildly out of her control.

Kanan has been a member of Hera’s crew -- her partner -- for a couple years now, and she knows they keep secrets from each other. But that’s all right: it’s unspoken, consensual secret-keeping. There’s a lot that she guesses about his past, but he’s never offered the information, and she’s never asked. For her part, she doesn’t tell him the details of the jobs they do for the rebellion, and he’s always been perfectly willing to simply follow her lead. Since they’re just business partners, this arrangement works just fine. The problem is, Hera is beginning to realize that her feelings might not exactly be the sort one has for a simple business partner.

What weird writing habits do you have? Probably less weird and more unadvisable, but I let my mom and dad read my first drafts as I write them, because sometimes I need a cheerleader or two to help make me write. It’s okay, so far, cause technically Firebreathers is in 2nd draft stage, but it’s the kind of 2nd draft where I’m finding the plot to give to the characters... so there’s still a lot of holes.

Have you ever read a book you hated so much you couldn’t finish it? What was it? Why? In all honesty, I tried to pick up Twilight at my mom’s request about 6 months ago, and the writing style just didn’t vibe with me, and so I put it down about 2 chapters in. Same with Game of Thrones. Also, I can usually tell if I’ll like characters within a few pages, and those characters were not fun for me, so I stopped. I’ve never vehemently hated a book, though.

What do you listen to while you write? I have a “general” playlist on Spotify that just has all the songs I’ve ever enjoyed on it, since I joined Spotify itself. Usually, it’s either on shuffle, or going from most recent additions down the list. I have been attending a few writing sprint livestreams recently, though, and those are nice to listen to/interact with when I’m writing. My favs are bytheBrooke, Kate Cavanaugh, and Emily Bourne! They’re all really chill.

What does an average day of writing look like for you? “Usual” meaning the days I do write, I’ll sit down at some point, put on some music and start up FocusWriter, and write anywhere from 250-1500 words over the course of 30 minutes to an hour. But I don’t write very often, even though I have time, because my mental health issues usually end up with me being too demotivated to life, never mind write.

What is a project you’ve always wanted to start, but haven’t gotten around to yet? It’s not writing related, strictly, but I’ve been wanting to do portraits for the protagonist cast of Firebreathers for a while! I just haven’t gotten around to it yet... probably because there’s a lot of them...

Is there anything about your current WIP that you’re super proud of? Well... a couple things really stand out to me. The fact that the zero draft of Firebreathers was written in a pair of composition notebooks on the bus to and from school in sixth grade, and that I’m now almost 50k words into a draft that could actually be a novel? Just thinking about it makes me happy and proud of myself! Also, the ways I’ve been improving on my description. Like the phrases the wheels tumble over the bumps and slurred, foreign speech stumbles from his tongue in the first chapters of Firebreathers, or a rusted over junkyard of a car from Deity Complex. It’s a pretty vast improvement on past-me.

What is a trope you absolutely can’t stand? Love ‘’’triangles’’’ that are really just love V-shapes that result in the middle person trying to decide between two people they love. It’s why if there’s any ‘’’love triangles’’’ in my books, they’re actual triangles that result in polyamory.

Do you have an OC that’s more or less just a fantasy version of yourself? All of my characters in Firebreathers are just facets of myself that have been isolated, exaggerated, and given a personality centered around that aspect. Even the villains. i.e. Ember is my mostly righteous anger at the world, Nimbus is the ‘’’gifted’’’ kid part of me, and King Evergreen is the misguided part that thinks it can save the world without putting in any effort.

Have any works inspired your current WIP? For Firebreathers, it would be Avatar: The Last Airbender, Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive, Red Rising, and Lord of the Rings. For Deity Complex, it’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Captain America: Civil War, and the little I remember about City of Bones.

What is your favorite WIP to write for? Firebreathers, 100%. I enjoy the wit in Deity Complex, and the ways I can cross reality with the AU, but the world of Ehl, and particularly Ember’s family, will forever be my favorite to work with.

2. youtube celebrities or normal celebrities? i don’t really pay attention to either but i guess ... normal celebrities?

3. if you could live anywhere where would that be? ireland. i loved it when i was on vacation there. or somewhere that’s a bit closer to all my friends here because timezones suck.

4. disney or dreamworks? off the top of my head i can definitely say more disney films that i love so disney.

6. the movie you’re looking forward to most in 2020? ngl, i had to google which films are coming out in 2020 to answer this question. probably onward.

7. favourite book you read in 2019? so 2019 was actually the year i read a lot more books in comparison to the last few years and i’m very thankful for mary to get me into reading again with all of her recommendations. my favourite so far was probably and then there were none. 

8. marvel or dc? marvel.

10. night or day? night. i barely function during the day.

14. top 4 movies: we bought a zoo, TANGLED (these two are my go-to feel good films), the martian is also really good and uhhh honestly all of taika waititi’s films  - i love a good comedy.

Which fandoms do you write for?

Idk, it really depends on my mood and how obssessed I am at the moment of writing. I have a Star Wars Rogue One fic on Wattpad and a Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger fic on both Wattpad and AO3. In my drafts I have many more fandoms: Warcraft LOTR, Percy Jackson, Fairy Tail, DC, Death Note, GOT, Les Mis and idk what else.(I have also posted a Misa Amane fic on Wattpad but it’s in romanian so not many people have read that, maybe I should rewrite it in english)

Which characters do you write for?

I wrote some Misa Amane fics, I started many Jason Grace fics, I am really excited about my Maiev Shadowsong x Illidan Stormrage fics, I am also a big fan of Eponine’s perspective in Les Mis, I am sure I have more but that’s all I’m gonna say for now.

Is there any character you currently don’t write for but want to, if any?

My main girl Daenerys Targaryen and my boy Matthias Helvar, I really love them both and I wanna do them justice. Also Juvia from Fairy Tail and some Inej Ghafa x Kaz Brekker action, Luna Lovegood is also on my list and let’s just add Sylvanas Windrunner for now and also my babies Kell Maresh X Lila Bard. These are just some of the characters I really wanna start writing about.

Are you working on a fic right now?

I am working on yet another Misa fic and a Illidan x Maiev one. I wanted to post them on my birthday, but I am lazy so I guess I won’t.

What do you write most of? Fluff, smut, angst, or dark?

If it is a character I love who has been wronged by canon, that means dark angst most of the time. If it’s a couple I love, fluff all the way. It’s not always like that tho I guess it depends on how I feel when I am writing. I can switch and make it all sunshine and rainbows for my wronged faves and take a dark turn for those with an ok ending. It’s not up to my brain, it’s up to my heart :))

Do you have a playlist or specific music you listen to while you write?

Yes, I have lots of playlists, but sometimes I make a specific playlist for a certain story or mood.

Are there things you like to do while writing?

I like listening to music and sometimes checking facts on the internet, because I forget stuff from canon and I am trying to be as accurate as possible(just sometimes, if canon sucks then I’ll make my own fanon). I also like to look at fanarts to get some inspiration. Or look at aesthetic boards and pics.

What writing program do you use?

Microsoft Word and google docs. When I was younger I would write directly on wattpad but those days are long gone. I also enjoy to write by hand, it makes me feel like a writer lady from the 19th century or something.

How long have you been writing for?

I have been writing since 2013-2014, around that time I think. I enjoyed writing in notebooks and journals before that and around that time one of my friends showed me wattpad (I used to read fanfics on fanfiction.net, but never thought about writing any) and then I fell in love with writing stuff, but I am too anxious to really post stuff regularly and all that.

Hi! So, I could be totally wrong here, but you seem like you’re going through quite a bit? If that is the case, I’d like you to know that it’s okay. If it’s a creative rut, maybe doing something completely different would help? Something of the “oh that’s cool but I could never do it right??” persuasion. Just dropping hsc is okay to if it no longer brings you happiness. Don’t worry about us internet-folk. If this is how it ends, it was good while it lasted. Just hoping for your happiness :3

i know i said i’d wait a little while to catch up on messages but this one really got me :-( thank u so much for taking the time to send it! i’ve been kind of vague about my updates lately so i hope u don’t mind if i use this as a platform to let u guys know where i’m at right now.

part of the reason for this hiatus is because i fell into a creative rut around the start of the holidays, but i had some issues with my back a couple of weeks ago that made it impossible for me to move or sit up straight for more than a few minutes at a time, and that definitely set me back longer than i had hoped. i’m better now, but i still can’t stay in one position for extended periods without feeling uncomfortable, and the way i write usually requires me to type without much of a break until the first draft is completed in its entirety. most of what i‘ve been working on over the past week or so was done on my phone, which is fine, but it takes about twice as long for me to finish a section of a chapter because i can’t look at such a small screen for too long (in case ur curious tho i have the next chapter of hsc finished and am working on the next two after that which happens to be the movie arc split into two parts).

i hope that doesn’t sound like some kind of sad excuse! just wanted to give clearer reasons as to why i’ve been gone for so long, even if they’re not very good ones. i’d like to think i’m at least getting over that creative rut; i’m listening to a lot of new music which means in addition to working on new chapters i’m creating new playlists and fixing up the old ones. i admit i’ve also been making the most out of finally getting to go outside, but u gotta remember i’m one of u internet-folk, too! hsc continues to bring me happiness even on days when i’m not quite sure what to write so i can assure u that unless something utterly life changing flips my world upside down i am always going to keep coming back to it.

ANYWAY that aside i’ve been watching a lot of shows and like i said listening to a lot of music these days since that was pretty much all i could do this month (i swear this isn’t a pity party i am perfectly mobile now) another reason why chapters are progressing slower than usual is because i’ve been hopping across fandoms like the energy bunny agsjdjdkdk i’m pretty sure i managed to catch up on miraculous ladybug, fairy tail, young justice, and voltron within the same week, re-watch most of haikyuu, inuyasha, and fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood the week after, and then have time to re-read a couple of the percy jackson books just a few days ago, plus (i know) with kingdom hearts ready to drop on top of all that i feel like my mind has been in ten different places at once. in short, it’s not that i’m not doing anything right now, but because i’m doing too much, i’m having trouble sticking to one thing at a time afskshls

this is getting to be a drag to read but yeah tldr i went from being totally uninspired to going on a creative hyperdrive and somewhere in between that i was on proper medical leave from the interwebz lulz 🤟🏼 sorry for rambling on about my boring life!!! how r u!!!! did u start school yet?? watch any new shows??? got some new bops on ur playlist???? honestly ur all way cooler than i am n ur ideas (some of which are still sitting in my inbox rip i don’t deserve u) are one of the many things that keep me motivated n thriving 🖤

just wanted to end this on a question because it’s something i’ve been curious about for a while and though i have to warn u ahead of time that i might not act on it i figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask ok yeah i’m actually gonna ask it now agdjjdsks would u guys like to see behind the scenes stuff?? messy sketches, random storyboards, profiles of original characters that may never see the light of day, chapter outlines that probably make no sense because half the time i don’t even follow them???? pls lmk

also i lied about ending it there (if u read thru my author’s notes ur probably used to that lol) a couple of people have asked if i would ever consider including lgbtq+ characters in my stories and my response both times was that i would be absolutely honored! as i said to one reader my primary concern was (and still is) that as a cisgender heterosexual i wouldn't do justice to said character and their story, but i welcome any guidance from u all and will do my best to bring them to life the way they deserve to be portrayed. in the climate we are in today i thought it was necessary to express my support for u regardless of ethnicity or gender identity and hope that u feel safe in the community we have collectively formed in this space. racism, sexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, discrimination against another individual for their sexual orientation or where they come from—all of these things and anything even remotely along those lines will not be tolerated here.

Short stories, novels, or poems?  

Novels mostly. I’m not very good at poetry. Short stories are hard for me to write because anything I write normally likes to be longer. 

What genre do you prefer reading?

Fantasy all the way. I love it! I’ve read a couple of sci-fi, but fantasy is where I find myself going when I want to read. 

What genre do you prefer writing?

Haha, fantasy again! It’s freeing to me, you know? I try to always write something that has nothing to do with my life in the real world. I don’t like reading about every day things and every day people, I like adventure, with a little magic. I’ve done a little sci-fi, but not as much as fantasy.

Are you a planner or a write-as-I-go kind of person?

Weeell, a mix of both? I have like a vague outline of what I want to happen in the story and then write as I go, making the pieces all connect in the end.

What music do you listen to while writing?

A lot of different things. It really depends on what exactly I’m writing. Sometimes I listen to a playlist I make for the story, or I listen to instrumental soundtracks, just, anything to get me into the mood and in the right state of mind.

Fave books/movies?

Books: I love, downright LOVE the Percy Jackson series! Greek Mythology and a fun protagonist with awesome friends that keep him grounded, what’s not to love? 

Of course, Harry Potter! It’s really what got me into wanting to read and maybe helped me in wanting to write.

Movies: I just did a meme with some of my favorite movies, but I have so many more that I love so much than the ones I shared in that post XDD Gaaah, there’s too many...

Any current WIPs?

Haaahaha... a couple. (I’m lying, I have over a dozen and they’re not all fanfics, a lot of them are original fics.)

If someone were to make a cartoon out of you, what would your standard outfit be?

Hehe, I have a few ideas! Standard would be a red flannel button up shirt probably closed mostly, open would be over a dark form fitting shirt, either black or a navy dark blue, sleeves rolled up past the elbows, blue jeans with sneakers. Cooler days I’ll have my n7 hoodie on. Maybe a scarf for the colder days. Give me fingerless gloves. If I’m in a dress, it’s got to be flowy. I love dresses I see advertised that are like I guess witchy dresses? So definitely things like that. High top boots when I wear those.

Create a character description for yourself:

Short brown curly hair and bright brown eyes, with light olive tan skin. Pink lips that are almost always in a smile, grin, smirk. So often that people will ask if she’s okay if she’s not smiling for even a second.

Loves to be around people she knows, but feels uncomfortable if she’s with people she’s unfamiliar with. Has a trusting heart, but has been hurt too many times so she keep it guarded as best as she can. Loves with her whole heart and puts her all into her passions.

Has a love of acting, writing, and art, though she feels she’s still mediocre with her art. Hates to disappoint people, but will not be sorry if she feels what she did was right.

Wants to be more than she is, but has a hard time trying to get out of the dark at times. Thoughts swim around, trying to keep her down, but all she wants is to be happy and bringing happiness to others.

While her thoughts can be dark, she pushes forward and tries to never let others see her darker thoughts. Only those she feels she can trust will she share.

Loyal to almost a fault. Will fight for her friends and family. Her close friends are her family.

Do you like incorporating people you actually know into your writing?

Like, reference them? Or do you mean their personalities? It depends? Always ask permission and make sure what you write is okay with them. Also, probably want to get it in writing that it’s okay if you’re putting someone your work.

Are you kill-happy with characters?

Noooope. :)

Coffee or tea while writing?

Tea, definitely.

Slow or fast writer?

Eeeeh, overall, I guess slow? But I can write fast when inspiration hits juuuuust right.

Where/who/what do you find inspiration from?

That’s hard to pinpoint. I daydream all the time, it’s just how I function. If I’m not focused at work on a task or something, or reading or watching something, I’m daydreaming. The inspiration to write what I’m daydreaming about comes and goes. I’m not sure how else to answer this question x’D

If you were put into a fantasy world, what would you be?

Like me as I am? Oh, I don’t know. I’d probably end up in a preforming circle or something? If I was able to, I’d want to be the one to go on the adventures. I probably wouldn’t be the main hero, but maybe I could help. I’m willing to learn anything that anyone is willing to teach me. Put me anywhere and I’ll do my best.

Most fave book cliche? Least fave book cliche?

Least favorite: “I hate you! But secretly deep down my hatred is actually love!, blahblah!” When two characters hate each other from the beginning, always belittling each other, and apparently that means they are in love... I hate it. It’s so over done. If it’s done well, sure, I’ll enjoy it, but most of the time, if I know that’s how the romance goes, then I won’t read it. If they care about each other they should just admit it instead of being so cruel to one another...

Fav: Well, idk if I have a fav? See I even forgot to add this one XD cliche I love is the characters having a fun silly moment and suddenly they realize how close they are and their hearts are thumping fast. Just move closeeer...

Fave scenes to write?

Hmm, interactions between characters, banters, sweet moments. Oh and I do enjoy writing scenes where someone is needing comfort. Just he heartfelt moments. Emotional moments, I guess? XD

Most productive time of day for writing?

Either in the middle of the night when I need to be sleeping or when I’m at work and need to be working. Well that’s when inspiration hits me hard XD at times I find myself writing a great deal on my phone when I need to be sleeping (yay for google docs!)

Reason for writing:

For myself and to share what my imagination comes up with. I want to share everything I think of. I want everyone to read it and tell me how it made them feel, what’s your favorite part? Who do you like? Do you hate this guy? Is the main protagonist annoying? I write to share stories. :)

It had been long enough since Jason had inadvertently betrayed them and or (depending on the point of view) accidentally brought their father down on them, that the wounds had healed over. When Jason and Nico came back in, Percy stumbled to his feet and launched himself at Jason, giving his friend a huge hug. Nico stayed just out of arms length - Percy drunk was a lethal combination of absolutely no coordination and no sense of strength and Nico had come close to death by strangulation more than once. Jason, pretty used to handling Percy drunk extradited himself with ease, and let Percy pull him back into the party circle.

"You're late Jason," Percy complained. "Like really late."

"I know," Jason said. "There was traffic. And I had to pick a couple of people up."

Nico turned rapidly to Jason, alarmed by the "couple". Who else was Jason hiding? Nico couldn't take any more surprises. It had to be bad for his health. Could he get Will to write him a note somehow? Dear universe, Nico has been through a lot so please excuse him from further surprises or other unpleasantness. Thanks (soon-ish to be) Doctor Solace.

The universe probably wouldn't pay the slightest bit of attention.

Nico was frowning at Jason trying to silently interrogate him on who this mysterious other person was, and if were any more sudden siblings Nico hadn't known about or seen in years he really would scream. Percy missed the entire thing, Jason just looked confused.

Nico's worries were assuaged anyway, when the door banged open and Leo appeared, blowing a party tooter.

"You can start the party now!" he called cheerily. "I am here!"

Leo was attacked in a death hug that nearly had the two of them on the floor.

"I thought you couldn't make it!" Percy was saying.

"Wouldn't miss this," Leo was saying. "Ooh are we playing games?"

Leo and Percy went back to the circle, Leo grabbed a shot from the bar on the way.

"How do you not drink at these things?" Nico demanded. "It's so stressful."

Jason gave him a wry smile.

"No more so than usual with you lot around," he commented. "Besides you can drink. Nothing stopping you. I honestly thought you'd be out of it by now, telling me all about the benefits of nihilism and orange juice or something."

Nico crossed his arms.

"I don't do that," he said.

"Uh-huh," Jason said.

"You know it must be nearly time to meet the girls," Jason continued, completely ignoring Nico’s glares to glance at his watch. Then he frowned distractedly.

"Hey," he said. "Where's Will?"

"Had to pick up a secret brother," Nico said. "He'll be here soon."

"Nico -" Jason began warningly, but Nico cut him off with a wave of his hand.

"I'm not over-thinking," he said.

"I'm not," he added when Jason seemed unconvinced. "I promised Reyna after all not to be a moron in relationships."

"So you'll listen to her?"

Nico scowled.

"I listen to you all the time. Like when you convinced me my boyfriend was a spy -"

Jason held up his hands in defeat and acceptance.

"Only for Russia and even then only at weekends," a familiar voice said. "Hey Jason."

"Hi Will," Jason said. "Will you tell Nico to stop-overthinking and start drinking?"

Will gave Nico a smirky kind of grin. He was stunning of course, but far from bowling him over like it used to it drew an internal eye roll. And okay maybe a small observation about how the colour of his smart-casual shirt really drew out the colour of his eyes. But over-all he was completely jaded to Will's superficial beauty.

"Go get drunk babe," Will said. Pet names and smirks were Will's weapons of choice in sarcasm and arguments and it was unfair they were so effective.

"Why are you still not drunk?" Will continued. "Have you not been to one of these before?  Do you need me to explain what a stag do is for? Because they seem to be largely for getting everyone really drunk."

Nico stared at him.

"Why don't you tell Jason about the text you got from Luke, honey."

Will's smirk flickered back but then he looked more serious.

"Luke," Jason asked. "You've heard from Luke?"

"Only to say someone called Thalia is in trouble."

Jason went kind of pale, eyes flashing to the door as though he could see into the foyer beyond. Nico nudged Will pointedly.

"Thalia's his sister," he explained in a stage whisper.

Will closed his eyes.

"Well you might have mentioned that before, sweetie, in which case I might have been a bit more gentle with that news."

"It's fine," Jason said though he didn't sound especially fine. He sounded tired, even more tired than he'd been over the last month. "I'm fine. I guessed it must have been something bad. Thalia doesn't usually fall apart like that."

"No," Nico agreed with only a little sulleness. "She gets mad not sad. Anyway you can appreciate why I'm currently still alarmingly sober."

Will gave him an understanding smile.

"When do the girls get here?" he asked Jason, and how did Will know more details about this party than Nico? Were his boyfriend and best friend in cahoots now? Nico wasn't sure he liked that. Next they'd be ganging up on him about his relationship with vegetables or something.

"Any minute," Jason said, glancing at his watch again.

"Percy seems to be having fun at least," Will commented. "Why are all the shots blue?"

"Don't ask," Nico said.

Wil raised an eyebrow.

"Okay well, I don't mean to be insensitive but Luke's message didn't make it seem like danger was imminent. And Percy has been gesturing to us to go over for the last like minute so maybe we should act like we want to be here not aiming that at anyone specific but certain people here have expressions more suitable for a funeral. Not everyone. Certain people. It looks great on you, Love but maybe not the most appropriate."

Nico hit him in the arm, but he had a point. This was Percy's night.

Nico let him and Jason pull him down to where Percy and the others were still playing Percy or Annabeth.

"Last question," Connor called. "And the newcomers and party poopers - looking at you Nico - can join in on this one. Jason I know you don't drink so we got you some blue Gatorade."

"Thanks," Jason said. "I think.”

"Right for the win, who does Annabeth think is the most irresponsible?"

No one even bothered writing.

"Percy!" everyone chorused.

"Hey," Percy protested, but then he shrugged.

"Yeah," he said. "Okay."

The games over, Leo cranked up the sound on the speakers.

"Let's hit some pinatas!" he yelled.

If his self from a year ago had been told that one day he'd be having fun at Percy's stag do for a marriage that wasn't to him, with a boyfriend in tow there was no way he'd ever have believed it. Things had changed a lot, but maybe they were for the better. Mostly for the better anyway.

Will had glitter on his cheeks and in his hair from the pinatas. He presented Nico with a small packet of haribo. It was largely made up of rings.

"Are you proposing?" Nico asked as he took them. He was sitting up on the bar refusing to dance, and Will was in front of him dancing distractedly as he tried to convince Nico dancing would be fun. Leo had put the playlist together and some of the songs made Nico frown slightly but Will had professed that Leo had good taste which was practically grounds for divorce.

"Proposing?" Will asked, sounding innocently surprised. "So early into the relationship? We have to write letters to each other for at least another two weeks and then you'd have to ask my papa's permission."

"Oh shut up you southern belle," Nico said. "And you don't even know who your papa is."

Will put a hand to his heart, mortally offended.

"How could you say such a thing?" he asked, teasing and over-dramatic. "At least my father is not a criminal overlord."

"That is a very good point my dear," Nico said with a straight face. "But then at least I didn't actively work for him."

Will laughed.

"Come on," he said. "Come dance."

Nico sighed but he actually recognised the song, and Will was so pretty under the flashing lights, glitter sticking to his cheeks like extra stars in the constellations already clustering his face. He slipped down off the bar, bringing a shot with him, letting Will pull him onto the dance floor.

"So what's this one?" he asked.

"Huh?"

"The song?"

"I thought you knew it," Will said. "You started dancing the second it came on."

"That's a lie your honour," Nico said automatically. "Besides you can know a song without knowing the name."

Will shrugged an acquiesce at that. Before he could answer, however, the door burst open and Piper appeared.

"We're here!" she called. She had on a pretty top and a nice pair of shorts over which she wore huge underwear emblazoned with a generic superhero symbol. She had a cowgirl hat all neon pink and bright splotches of cow print lopsided on her head.

"Looks like the girls have been having fun," Will commented wryly. Nico smirked. He'd been around a drunk Piper only once but it had been an experience. He thought the drunk men she'd been hustling drinks out of at the bar were going to kill her when they finally caught on to the fact she was playing them.

"Don't make or take any bets around her," he warned.

Annabeth appeared in the doorway next, a princess crown and veil placed on her head equally lopsided.

"Percy!" she yelled. "Look who's here."

Thalia was close behind, smudgy make up still smudged, hair still ruffled but looking festive in a bright blue feather boa Annabeth had wrapped around her shoulders. Nico might not have gotten on particularly well with her but the glee with which Annabeth introduced her friend made Nico kind of glad she'd shown up, though the circumstances could have been better. Percy scrambled to his feet, rushed over to Thalia.

"Sparks!"

"Water Works," Thalia said. "Heard you were getting married. Notice I didn't get an invitation to the wedding."

Annabeth laughed.

"We had no idea where you were!" she said accusingly. "You're a good one for disappearing. But now you're back you can have the place of honour."

"Hey - " Piper broke in with a cheeky grin. "I thought that was going to me."

"You can have a joint place of honour with Piper. And we can have another hen night. Maybe in Europe. Should we go to Europe? Maybe Paris, I haven't been to Paris. Hey Percy let's go to Paris."

"Sure," Percy said cheerfully, without a real clue about what was going on. "I'll add it to the list."

The rest of Annabeth's friends had intermingled with Percy's. Shots were poured out and taken around for the girls.

"We were dancing," Will said, gently pulling Nico back by the arm.

"That was when I knew the song," Nico said.

Will fixed him with an unimpressed look.

"Everyone knows What is Love."

Nico couldn't really deny that.

"You know I hate dancing," he mumbled but he let Will pull him along anyway and somehow he stayed until the next song and the song after that. He didn't drink much after the first shots and joined Jason on the blue gatorade. Though Will thought Luke didn't think there was much danger, and didn't pose a threat, and though Thalia had shaken off whatever was upsetting her and was dancing happily with Annabeth and Piper, there was a small part Nico couldn't quite relax. Will, he noticed, followed his lead and didn't drink much at all. That was like a knife in Nico's chest: painful and making him go weak at the same time and it made him smile at Will and keep dancing. Will was a good distraction.

At some point Percy and Annabeth's outer circle of friends left, leaving him and Will, Jason and Piper, and Leo, and Thalia. They all sat out on the fire escape, wrapped in coats and various items of fancy dress that had been strewn around the bar. Nico sat back against Will's legs, listening to the music that still played, though more quietly, and watching as the sky turned pale blue and then tinged pink.

The others were talking - reminiscing, making plans - but he was content to listen, Will's fingers intertwined with his.

Tiredness was catching up with him. The others were starting to feel the effects too, but no one wanted to end the party. At some point Nico fell asleep woke again when Thalia and Piper, who had very quickly become best friends, starting singing Country Roads Take Me Home To The Plaaaace -and planning to quit their jobs that second and take a road trip. Leo was going on about all the best things about road trips when Nico's eyes shut again.

Will nudged him awake again when the sun was a yellowing disc just above the horizon.

"Time to go," he said softly.

The others were getting up, collecting their things. In the foyer Jason was organising taxis, trying to count them all and figure out who would be best to ride with who.

"Where are you staying Thalia?"

"With ussss!" Piper said enthusiastically, to both Thalia and Jason's surprise though both accepted it.

"Okay so that means the three of us in one taxi," Jason said.

"Nico you better go with Percy," he continued. That was usually Jason's job but Nico just shrugged.

"And then Will with you as well obviously but then that leaves Leo and Annabeth. Wait where are you staying Leo?"

"He's near me," Annabeth said. "That works."

Jason stared at the both of them, doubtingly. Leo had on a pair of sunglasses and though he was leaning against the wall he was tipping and tilting and he keeled over. Annabeth was swaying happily and in complete contrast to her sober self did not seem very with it at all.

"I'll go with them," Will volunteered, catching Jason's eye with a slight smile. "It's sort of on the way."

Will glanced at Nico and Nico shrugged and nodded.

"I'll see you at home."

Will left first with Leo and Annabeth who were looking most worst for wear. Him and Percy were supposed to be next but then Percy, who had been fiddling with his engagement band, lost the ring and was crawling around looking for it.

"You go," Nico said. "I'll get the ring and the groom into the next taxi."

Jason smirked.

"Practice for the wedding?" he asked.

"I freaking hope not," Nico answered.

Jason grinned and wished him a good night, taking his drunk girlfriend and tipsy sister with him. Nico watched Percy scrabbling around the floor for a moment and then with a sigh got down on his hands and knees and began searching.

"Found it!" Nico said extracting the ring from under the counter. "And that sounds like the taxi."

He handed pulled Percy to his feet and handed him the ring.

"Don't lose it again," he instructed sternly, but his attempts to be authorititive just had Percy giggling.

"You don't do that as much anymore," Percy commented as Nico dragged him towards the door.

"Do what?" Nico asked distractedly.

"Frown," Percy said.

Nico stopped dead, but Percy was too drunk to notice any significance in that.

"I don't know what you mean," he said quietly. He pulled himself together, pulled Percy onwards.

"I frown all the time," Nico continued. "Look I'm frowning now because you're not walking properly and you're going to pull us both over."

"Sorry," Percy said automatically.

"I'm glad you have Will though," Percy said, apparently reaching the soppy stages of his drunk pattern. Nico was surprised he hadn't gotten there sooner. Nico glanced at his friend, who was frowning in his attempts to put one foot in front of the other. There was no way Percy would remember this conversation in the morning.

"I'm glad too," Nico said softly. "And I'd quite like to get home so if you could hurry it up that would be great."

Percy gave him a sappy grin.

"I love you Neeks," he said. "You're like my favourite little brother."

"Great," Nico said.

Percy frowned.

"Ugh," Nico said. "I love you too. Now for goodness sake the driver is going to drive off without us at this rate."

Percy did make a concentrated effort to hurry up, for all the good it did their pace. It wasn't far to the door but Percy managed to turn it into a marathon. Luckily the car was still waiting, back door open. Nico poured Percy inside and got in after him, yanking the door shut. Nico gave Percy's address and driver moved off without a word.

Nico's eyes were getting heavy again and he kept thinking of collapsing in bed. He had to keep jerking his eyes open, glancing over at Percy to make sure he wasn't making trouble, before sinking back into a sleepy daze. Because he was so out of it, it took him far too long to figure out the car wasn't going the right way.

He frowned, just faintly puzzled at first. They weren't that far from where they should be. Maybe there had been a diversion. When the car took a right when it should have been a left, Nico felt the thrills of dread.

He didn't know what to do, and Percy was too drunk to be any help and drunk enough to be a huge liability. Did he say something to the driver? Maybe the driver had heard the address wrong or -

Or this was deliberate.

He swallowed and pulled out his phone. His battery was flashing low, down in very last dregs of red. He'd taken too many pictures of Percy and Leo for bribery purposes. That would teach him. He would probably only have time for one call, or one message. Who did he reach out for? The police? Jason? Will? They should really have a group chat for these kind of problems - help we've been kidnapped.

An incoming text from Jason made up his mind. Jason was clearly by his phone.

He tapped out a quick message - probably incoherent in his hurry to get it sent before the battery died. After it was sent he opened up his and Will's thread but the screen went black, the little charge symbol taunting him when he stabbed at the screen.

Nico glanced at the driver, a dark figure behind the glass, and then to Percy. He was staring out the window, apparently oblivious to everything, half mumbling half singing. It was that song, the one he'd first got up to dance to. Will had never gotten to tell him what it was. What if Nico got murdered now and Will never got to tell him and he'd die not knowing and Will wouldn't know what happened to him.

No need to panic though.

He nudged Percy gently.

"Have you got your phone?" he asked.

Percy rummaged in his pockets then shook his head.

"I think Jason might have had it. Or Annabeth. Or Leo took it at one point and was recording some monologue about -"

Nico tuned out. Great. Just great. They were trapped in a taxi with a possible mad-mass murderer and/or one of Luke's minions or someone from Jason's father which all really probably amounted to the same thing. And neither of them had a working phone.

Though he could still feel tiredness, it was held at bay by the tension coiled in him. When the car stopped he threw open the door, intending to pull Percy out with him, to make a run for it. Percy was entangled with his seat belt and didn't have enough urgency for it to work. As the driver opened his door, Nico raced around the car, opened up Percy's door.

"This isn't my house," Percy observed, reasonably calmly though there was an undercurrent of awareness rising to the surface. He was beginning to look alarmed.

"Hurry up," was all Nico said.

Percy turned back to his seat belt. Nico sensed someone behind him and he turned, too quickly. They'd come to a stop on a dirt driveway, muddy and slippery and his foot had caught on a rock. He went down, trying to catch at the door to save him but it swung in throwing him even more off balance. He was aware of a sharp pain as he hit his head on something and then there was black.

QUESTIONS:

1) Do you listen to music when you’re writing?

YES. I actually don’t know if I’ve ever written without music on in the background. I have to have music playing. I can’t handle silence and I can’t focus if like the TV is on. I usually have playlists for each of my projects, they change a lot and sometimes I just put on something generic. But yup. I always have music playing.

2) Does your family/friends know that your write stories/poems/etc.?

Yes. I’m lucky in that I have a very supportive family and group of friends. It actually never occurred to me not to tell people? But yeah. I’m lucky. Like, it’s kind of embarrassing because my mom is the best but she brags about me and I’m like THERE’S NOTHING TO BRAG ABOUT UNTIL I GET PUBLISHED! But yeah. Writing is my main focus, I don’t/didn’t go to college to focus on writing so you know, it kind of comes up a lot. I like to talk about it. What else would I even talk about? I’m so awkward it’s the only thing I have that I can hold a coherent conversation about!

3) What was your favorite book as a child?

The books that got me into reading and loving books and made me want to write were the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. So yeah. Those. The third, The Titan’s Curse, has always been my absolute favorite.

4) Tea or Coffee?

COFFEE. C.O.F.F.E.E. COOOOOFFFFFEEE. coffee. So yeah. I kind of like coffee. A little? Just a little. (I should go get some coffee...)

5) Notebooks and pens or laptop/computer?

I do most my writing on my computer. I love my computer, his name is Tom - Why? It’s Riddle... Get it? Tom Riddle? I didn’t come up with that. My brother did. I like taking credit. BUT, anyway. Writing/editing on the computer at my desk or on the floor, in bed, in a comfy chair? In front of the fireplace when it’s cold out! Anywhere. BUT I do a lot of outlining with just a notebook and pen and brainstorming is usually done on my phone while I’m doing other things.

6) How old were you when you started to write?

I’ve always wanted to write, I didn’t even know why for a long time before I started reading a lot but I still wanted to write. I wrote the first few chapters of a lot of terrible things when I was young that I don’t count. When I was 13/14, this was after I got into reading aka my first love, and I had this moment where I realized that yup. Writing. It’s the only life for me. Around then I got my first Big Idea, but I didn’t start writing it until my brother forced me (it was kind of a bet and also just a SHAY IF YOU WANT TO BE A FUCKING WRITER YOU HAVE TO FUCKING WRITE) when I was 16.

7) What is the first line of a WIP you’re working on?

I guess I’ll share the first lines of a couple original things? I don’t usually do that here but it sounds fun!

So the book I’m currently working on the third draft of, The Forgotten Name:

The King of Nightmares stared out at a crumbling world from the highest point of a castle in the sky, awaiting news from his spies that even then were scouring the world for signs of the thief.

And for the novel I’m outlining to write for NaNoWriMo next month I actually wrote a first sentence for it like two months ago because first sentences are IMPORTANT! But it might change when I actually write it... Stand in title is, Pocket Magician:

Ry stalked across the rooftops of Illium late into the night, paper birds fluttering over his shoulders as he made his way to the palace, a mask of molten silver covering his face and hiding the fact that he was of the sort that would never be allowed close to the prince he was heading to see.

8) Do you base your characters on real people or not?

Noooo. Nope. I’ve never really gotten why people would do that? No judgment, it’s just not for me. Sometimes I borrow names but even that is usually not from people close to me.

9) What does writing mean to you?

EVERYTHING. I don’t know how to answer this question except to say what I just told @maud-eration actually, and that’s that I don’t know what I would be without writing. I would have nothing. Like it’s just, honestly, everything to me, everything I want in life. I don’t think I’d be much of anything without it.

10) What is your least favorite trope to write?

Cliche romantic tropes which is ironic as it’s all I write in fanfic. BUT I don’t mean “cliche” as in like coffee shop AU. I mean cliche as in love triangles, insta-love, romance that takes over the plot in a fantasy novel. I love romance, I love having a good ship to root for and to write, but I don’t like it taking over. In my original stuff, I try not to write the cliche love story into my books. OH. And the bad boy who's actually good. I admit, I fall for that in a book, in the moment, but I also hate that so much. I refuse to write the cliche bad boy character. OOOHH, ALSO the main character with red hair trope! That’s a trope right? I mean, it’s everywhere. Especially in fantasy. I just swore to a friend that I would NEVER write a main character with red hair.

11) Do you have any favorite authors?

Of course! Rick Riordan. Rainbow Rowell. Leigh Bardugo. Cinda Williams Chima. Diana Wynne Jones. V.E. / Victoria Schwab. I’m pulling names off the top of my head but there are so many more I could continue forever!
