Have you played CRASH PANDAS

Crash Pandas is a free 1-page game. You're a bunch of raccoons, all trying to drive the same car, looking to make their names in the dangerous world of LA street racing. Driving is handled with a blind-bidding system that could see you all try to turn right at the same time and smash the car into a wall.

I run Dungeons & Dragons and occasionally some other tabletop rpgs at my library, and like many DMs, one of my favorite things to do is slip little references to media I enjoy into my games. My audience is mostly in the 12-15 range, so oftentimes the references are to media that they don't know about and I could possibly get in trouble for telling them about, but it still makes me happy.

So when I ran a session of the Grant Howitt one-page RPG Crash Pandas (where you play as street-racing raccoons), I decided to have a knockoff of the Mechanisms as one of the other racers. They were in a bus that was also named Aurora, one of them had killed a party member's family, and in the end the bus got blown up by a pyromaniac raccoon (which is, admittedly, a pretty Mechs thing to happen). A very fun time was had by all.

My players absolutely loved Crash Pandas, so this October, I chose to forgo my usual oneshot of a specifically horror-based or spooky ttrpg to instead run a Halloween-themed Crash Pandas oneshot. And, while the group's destructive tendencies last time meant that I had to pick a new lineup of rival racers, I brought the Mechanisms back, because why the hell not?

And let me tell you, when one of the players that had been at the previous one walked in and almost immediately pointed to the bus and shouted "It's Jonny!" my soul left my body.

I think about the 'crisscross' joke in the Crash Pandas oneshot all the time and no one ever gets what I'm referencing, so I finally compiled the entire bit into a single video for everyone who forgot this oneshot existed

Okay, after a bit, I've realized what exactly is off with Zhen to me. It's not the voice (although Awkwafina's voice is... very grating to put it as politely blunt as possible,) no, it's the overall design. I'm not here to be all nitpicky and annoying, but genuinely, her design feels out of place in this universe. Kung Fu Panda's designs are so heavily shape-focused, their shapes and sizes are so unique and special to them! So when you bring someone like Zhen, who looks ripped straight from Zootopia, it just feels... lame. And It's not like this applies to ANY of the new characters we see either!!! Look at the Chameleon vs. Zhen!

The Chameleon has this unique shape to her, she's so skinny, her shape intentionally reduces her fear factor, she's small and puny, so thus she would also be weak, no? But you're WRONG, she's a more powerful threat than you could imagine! Meanwhile with Zhen I can't even tell if she's a fox or a wolf, like I had to go to the wiki just to find out she's even a fox!

All her design tells me about her is she's some bandit or something... again, Kung Fu Panda is KNOWN for its unique shapes and sizes, it's stylization is something to gawk and marvel at, with just how GOOD they are... and Zhen just doesn't deliver... which really sucks, especially if the theory of her being the new "Dragon Warrior" is true...

Nest tutorial

1. Bed. Make sure your bed is in a corner. My bedroom is very long and narrow so my bed wedges perfectly between three walls, but two walls is fine.

2. Put your pillows in a C shape. Then put your sheet and comforter over them and tuck them under to make a nice bird nest shape

3. Get lots of throw blankets. The more the better, especially if you're like me and you like to keep your room freezing cold. Spread them out nice on your bed with extra throw pillows, stuffies, etc

4. Get yourself a small storage tub and fill it with things like chips, snack cakes, cans of soda, things youd like to snack on that you can seal back up

5. Grab all your chargers and electronics, movies and remotes if you have a TV in your room, spray your bed with some nice scents, dim the lights, and get nice and cozy

Congratulations you now have a nest!!

Just finished running a one-page RPG for a group of teenage boys at work (Crash Pandas by Grant Howitt, look it up it's a lot of fun). It was wild, it was ridiculous, it was extremely fun, and afterwards while a couple of them were excitedly telling their ride about it, one of them turns to me and says "I thought libraries were supposed to be quiet places."

To which I, thinking back on that oneshot, and how wild it got, and looking at this excited crowd of kids, just said "Well, that wouldn't be any fun."
