imagine jason sets up a meeting with this new driver, wanting to hire him.
to set the scene: jason could only set up this meeting by talking to the short librarian who works at the front desk at Gotham Public Library, who had to direct him to the archivist in the deepest basement level of the library, who then told jason he needed a 'time and place', and 'he'll be there'.
jason's not sure if that was even true- this guy is so fucking elusive, though, that it took jason 2 weeks to find just that librarian at the front desk.
so here he is, praying this guy shows up to the address he'd given, if only so he at least gets intel on the guy.
when he hears the door open, it scares the shit out of him- there had been no footsteps. he's on edge, ready to fight-
and behind the door is a kid.
black hair, slightly wavy, thick and messy, with a few different white streaks and spots scattered throughout, blue eyes that are just bright enough to be unnatural, and a lower face covered by a blue surgical mask; that's the first thing jason sees, followed by the kid's 5'3 stature, skinny limbs, and then the prosthetic arm peeking out of the left hoodie sleeve.
they lock eyes. jason feels something he can't explain, and he knows suddenly that this kid is his, his to protect, his to keep safe-
because that's what he is, just a kid, cautious and careful and quiet, watching diligently from the doorway.
something changes in the kid at the same time, a slight loosening of the posture, a spark in his eye.
"do you want a job?" jason asks, because what else can he say?
"... yeah, sure," the kid responds, because what else could he do?
"show me what you've got, then," jason says, cocking a hip before he raises a hand to beckon the kid along, moving to the door at the other end of the abandoned garage. he tugs the garage door up, and behind it is a small, inconspicuous vehicle, no doubt tricked out on the inside with power equivalent to the batmobile (because when was jason one to be outdone?).
the kid's eyes sparkle just a bit, and he jogs over to hop in the driver's seat as jason slides into the passenger.
jason watches as the kid nerds out over the car a bit.
he gets no warning when they're suddenly moving out of the alley, speeding out onto the street- straight through the fence blocking the alley from view?!
jason can do nothing but brace himself and watch as the kid zips through gotham, not following even one traffic law with how frequently he veers off the road and through buildings supernaturally, drifting all the while to make directional changes, as if to throw off tails that weren't there-
and before jason knows it, the car pulls up, slowing immensely, to park right in front of red hood's known HQ.
there are a few seconds of silence before jason says, just a little shakily, "you've got a job. can you start tomorrow?"
"yeah, sure," the kid replies, and there's just a bit of mirth in his eyes.
"wanna come in and talk about benefits?" jason asks.
"yeah. by the way, i never introduced myself- i'm danny."
"i'm hood," jason says, climbing out of the car. "welcome to the gang."
3 months later, jason learns that none of danny's previous employers had gotten the efficiency danny had given him- apparently, danny didn't go through buildings and drift on slanted rooves for them.
danny, when questioned, responds that "you would understand. they wouldn't."
which leaves jason with questions, but oh well.
3 months after that, danny drops the bombshell that he trusts jason because, quote, "you can only really trust another ghost."
that opens up an entirely separate can of worms.
it's okay, though, jason thinks, because at least he's got a new little brother.
Driver Danny.
Danny goes to Gotham (you can pick why) and he's strapped for cash.
So he tries everything to keep the flickering lights on and the leaky roof over his head.
Dishwashing, pizza delivering, grocery shop Manning, beverage making, tutoring.
He does everything.
Eventually he ends up doing less then legal stuff.
Keeping a look out while a store gets robbed (didn't really feel guilty for that one, the owner was an asshole) work at the iceberg lounge.
Somehow he ends up as a gettaway driver...
Danny, the son of Jack "what's a red light?" Fenton.
He becomes the most sort after driver in Gotham.
#dpxdc#dcxdp#dp x dc#dc x dp#prompt fill#danny and jason are found brothers your honor#nobody else can really tell#because they fight like rabid dogs once they really get to know each other#but it's okay it's just ghost love#everyone sees hood and danny acting like employer and employee#boss and goon#but they all see jason scruffing danny to make him do 'homework' while the kid hangs around HQ#and danny taking the extra food jason always mysteriously seems to have accidentally purchased#and yeah#that checks out#they're brothers i guess

Jason “my family doesn’t know im alive” Todd and Danny “my family doesn’t know I’m dead” Fenton going alongside each of their plans my beloved. like Danny will absolutely go head-to-head with all of Gotham to support his new best friend on all his crime lord endeavors while he drags Jason to also attend collage with him. They are roommates and there never seems to a mention of family from either side. It’s an unspoken understanding they have. They met because Crime alley as a ghost lair thrummed with so much loneliness, it was at first the perfect place for Danny to hide his ecto signature in. But then he saw the dumbass whose lair it was lean his motorcycle just a tad too much when making a sharp turn to an alley, he sweeped the floor through a lifted chain link that passed his body but not his helmet. Yep that’s right the red thing got stuck. Danny who at the moment happened to be watching through his window snorted. Much to his horror because if not a ghost that dude could’ve gotten his head flung off.
Still, the scene was ridiculous.
On a whim he irrationally sees the police closing in on the guy and panicked at the thought of the guy using intangibility to free himself so Danny phased them both through his apartment wall and left the guy sprawled in his couch. Jason didn’t freak out but that’s normal when one’s got a concussion, one the guy immediately denied having as Danny laid out the medical supplies. The idiot proceeded to almost flatten four steps to the door with his stubbornness. He also said “I’m asexual” in the most deadpan voice as Danny dropped him back in the couch.
Danny sighed. Clearly though, he’d done so too early in the night because the guy kept trying to go, kept trying to knock Danny out, kept trying to slash him with knifes Danny didn’t know he had stashed. He’d only disarmed the guy from his guns. The visible ones apparently, cause at one point the guy did take out a gun and shoot until the ammo ran out and then teetered the thing like it was an art prop and hit his moon lamp.
Danny "yeah you aren’t officially my friend until you’ve tried to kill me" fenton my guys.
Anyways both keep having the same argument over if Danny technically kidnapped Jason or not. Danny holds the fact that the police at least didn’t see the guy make the ridicule. Jason argued that happened cause he was sporting a concussion. Danny argued he got that after.
Jason at first thinks the guy's a meta, but no. Danny introduces himself, sheepily now that he recognizes this is who the lair he invaded is from. He bandages him and tries to cook for him. If Danny didn’t have ice powers he most certainly would’ve burned the apartment. Jason then proceeds to kick him out of his own kitchen and make them both enchiladas. It’s the most normal both had in a while with another person and the air seems oddly settled. From then on, Jason constantly invited himself over, under the pretense that this was his territory and therefore he could drop in unannounced. Danny who has actual powers says he only allows this because Jason cooks very well.
Danny stays away from the crime fighting business unless his buddy is in deep shit he can’t get himself out. Also it’s Danny’s turn to cover for his vigilante friend which Sam and Tucker give him so much shit for. (but also advice)
And they were roommates. (omg) Danny effectively derails Jason’s big comeback plans by casually dropping ghost lore every two days. Like,
Jason, talking about how he doesn’t want Bats snooping on his territory:
Danny: Just don’t let them in
Jason: ??
Danny: yeah!! Hasn’t Batman died and got revived??? You can totally kick out death touched people you don’t want entering on your lair.
Jason: …I can?
Danny: Yep dude, your lair’s supposed to feel safe.
Jason: wait does that mean I can kick you out?
Danny: First this is my apartment. Second, im dead, not dead touched. Third, it’s too late to get rid of me. bitch.
Anyways Jason is super excited. You mean to tell him he can actually deny people over to his territory haunt?? (Yes it’s only to people who have died and came back but still!! The sample size is exactly the type of people he doesn’t want to see—!)
Joker my beloathed can’t step foot in Crime Alley.
(Jason’d feel a lot safer if the clown was dead but the possibility of his murderer turning into a ghost and their little loophole not applying on the clown is too scary to contemplate.)
Anyways, Jason loves experimenting with the power. It can go from simply making people shudder and not want to enter crime Alley to straight up not letting them enter like there’s an invisible wall blocking the way.
Jason because he’s hurt that Bruce never even patrols Crime Alley and also because he’s petty put B under the category of “invisible wall” blacklist. His reasoning is that the man doesn’t even attempt to enter Crime Alley. To him it’s surely just a place shadowed in tragedy. (anyways that’s it’s the place he met Jason)
Ironically, Jason totally forgets that Batman does venture into Crime Alley one day in the whole year. The day he met Jason.
Okay. He didn’t forget at first. The first year Jason remembers cause it was only a few months till then but then the next— Jason forgets that today’s the anniversary of the day’s Bruce’s parents died. He forgets to allow B in when he feels a slight tug and dismiss the feeling that prompts Bruce to investigate because he literally can’t enter Crime Alley. He starts the trialsTM, he scouts on the very edge and sees people the whole day enter and get out and cross with no problem but Bruce can’t.
It’s literally just Bruce.
Time to call Constantine, i guess.

@demonic0angel I have a feeling you'll love this prompt, perhaps a backstory plot point of your First Burn Prompt :3.
DCxDP Prompt 14:
Song Prompt Inspiration : Satisfied From Hamilton, I made first burn but that's just very angsty... Why not make it MORE angsty but different ships.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Danny and Jazz happens to travel to Gotham to visit Dan, Danny and Jazz are inseparable siblings, both going to the same college and graduating together too. Vowing to never Seperate from each other and always have one another's back.
Dan himself was successful, became the heir to Dalv Co. Brought him many things but with the price of being forced to play nice in Galas. Danny and Jazz were both invited along with Dan to a Wayne gala, Dan begrudgingly attended as he always does and Danny and Jazz were happy to accompany Dan.
— — — — — — —
There Danny Met, Jason Todd. Danny felt themselves click, getting along with many topics and Danny felt himself falling for him, they felt like a match and Danny's core approved of this Man, He's a bit of a flirt but he'll give it a chance. He wants to take him far away from this place yet when he turns to see his sister's face and she is helpless.
God. Ancients. Danny felt his heart clench, he kept a smile on his face as he approached his sister, he kept his smile, he needed to keep it, he loved his sister and she...
She's fallen in love too with the same man, Danny did what any good brother would do, Introducing their Sister to the person they've fallen for. Danny felt his heart break and shatter but it was fine, Dan noticed it but didn't press anything out of Danny but merely comforted Danny as he cried in Dan's arms in private.
Ancients, Danny felt stupid for falling Inlove so fast but he can't help it, it was the first time he's met someone who's just like him, it was the first time he's fallen Inlove so fast and so hard for Someone but he loves and treasures jazz more.
He knew if he told jazz that she fell Inlove for that person she'd let HIM go to him and take him but Danny didn't want her to be heartbroken, he can't take the thought of Jazz being heartbroken, He'd rather be the one to be so than his beloved sister.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Everything happened so fast in Danny's perspective, Jason And Jazz got closer and now they're getting married.. Danny felt both proud and heartbroken, he can't choose which really but fuck does he feel so happy for his sister even if he is hurting.
He became her Groom of Honor, Danny was so happy to see his sister getting married to her love, he was so happy that she finally found love. But Ancients... It still hurts so goddamn much.

de-aged Danny is one of my babies,
Shit hits the fan with the giw and Danny is super injured and Clockwork has to mess with some things so Danny doesn’t return to his core being vulnerable and sends him millions of miles away to Gotham and in the process Danny becomes 6/10 years old and is weeks healed due to being smaller and costing less ectoplasm but is still achy, Danny is steered to Jason’s apartment where he just got off his shift and then his is the twist! Jason is mute due to an accident with the joker and Batman (batman unintentionally causing his muteness) and out of reflex of a child on his counter hand first into a box of Cheerios let’s put a exasperated noise of flames and a lighter and Danny responds with his own spark of electricity and Jason is shocked (hehe) that Danny can understand and even communicate can he just lets out everything he’s been doing since “holy shit I can talk to someone normally” and then he realizes this child has the same scar as him and is pissed but Danny calms him down and calms the pits and he’s like “okay you’re mine now shit- I’m like Bruce- no. I’ll think about this later-“ Danny is super cute and Jason is having a field day with parent hood and Jason gives Danny a comm for when he goes out but he’s only allowed to speak in ghost speak and the rest are confused when Jason sprints away and they follow to see Danny in Jason’s arms being lulled to sleep with a man on the ground knocked out or dead who knows not Jason because it was shoot & punch and ask questions later and then Danny says sleepily “Oh your daddy’s brothers, hi” like it’s normal to meet family in this situation and Jason puts him to bed before signing “Say anything to Bruce and you will never be called uncle or attend his birthday in your life.”
Bruce only finds out when Jason some how ends up super injured and can’t sign and Danny translates (no editing just straight he said fucking hell) and introduces himself as Danny Todd, Bruce privately cried a little
The Joker catches wind of Red Hood's son and as you know, the Joker loves breaking people, both physically and mentally.
So he tries that shit with Danny, and because this is highly targeted specifically towards Red Hood. He even uses the method he killed Red Hood with when he was just a little itty-bitty robin.
Don't even talk about time because the entire Batfam suddenly gained fucking superspeed (They don't, but at the rate they're going they might as well have it), find the location the Joker is holding Danny at and descend on the Joker like a pack of starving wolves catching their prey.
Like, no joke (heh). They all throw straight hands; Joker gets tag teamed to hell and back by every one of them and none of them are holding back.
Later the Joker is on the ground a mangled mess, passed the fuck out and Batman just decides to go "Peace" and leaves him for dead without looking back, takes Danny (With Jason's explicit permission) and drives off in the Batmobile to Batburger because Danny was hungry.
Literally everyone else:
Joker just gets absolutely violated even further than what he already got, now that Batman's gone and very much left him for dead there ain't no one here to even try and stop them.
Gets beaten so hard he regains consciousness, and that guy still finds some reason to laugh.
A couple hours the Joker is just a mangled corpse with an inch of life in em and they give Jason the honor of finishing him off because not only was he the one to kill him, but he also tried to kill his son. Joker gets a bullet through his skull with both Danny and Bruce none the wiser because Bruce suddenly found himself on babysitting duty.
Danny was fully well and capable of getting out of that situation on his own, and he would've, but the Batfam was literally just faster in getting to the Joker than he was.
And he was literally with the Joker.

part 11- a thousand candles burn into the night
"When the ashes start to rise and the moon falls from the sky and a thousand candles burn into the night. When the angels softly cry on the flames below the sky, would a thousand souls still pray for you and I?" -Day of the Dead by Hollywood Undead
Masterlist Part 10
Just like the summer air began to cool into autumn winds, Jasmine and Jason began with a heated tension between them that dwindled into a slow simmer of what neither of them wanted to jinx by calling it love.
Both were aware of how unnatural their connection was, how quick one was able to trust the other with simple thoughts that roll off the tongue- Jazz’s favorite tea, Jason’s favorite book, her younger siblings, his many brothers. It was obvious that Jason held some lingering anger towards those he called family, but it was an old wound, infected yet healing. When it came to more in-depth questions about Jazz’s siblings, Danny and Ellie, there was a sad tinge to the affection. Jazz missed Ellie with every fiber of her being, but her little sister was free as her heart desired.
Jason spoke at length about his own, eventually admitting his anger issues that had led him to attempted murder on one of the younger boys, Tim, that he deeply regretted.
Jazz had only to listen, because who else could understand the deeply rooted rage that came with betrayal?
One slash, two, three
Blood is on your hands already.
Fourth, fifth slash
Ask the ghosts if honor matters, buried amongst the ash.
Slash six, seven
Sharpen your love into a weapon
They went out on several dates, each one special and lovely, but Jazz’s favorite was being wrapped in familiar arms as they watched Pride and Prejudice on Jason’s couch. It was a comfortable warmth that lulled the redhead into a deep sleep, the best she had gotten in a long time.
Jazz was the first to wake, lying on Jason’s firm chest and ear pressed firmly to where she could hear a faint purr from his Proto-Core, she felt no compulsion to move even though there were things she had to do as Regent and as Jasmine.
She had to talk to Frostbite, because she needed to understand why she was so connected to Jason. It frightened Jazz, to have her emotions so sharpened towards someone she hadn’t known for very long.
(She was in love.)
Her own Proto-core purred in tandem with Jason’s, happiness bubbling up in her chest. This was a peace she never wanted to let go, regardless of the reason why the two of them were brought and bound together.
Jason was in love.
There was zero doubt in his head or heart that he was fully committed to his darling Jazz, the beautiful woman who understood him in ways no one ever had. With her, the pit remnants were calm and he was happy.
Happy.
Sheer happiness was in his grasp, in his arms and resting on his chest as she slept. Her long hair smelled like strawberries and he never wanted to leave.
Yet, bat-trained paranoia reared its ugly head in moments like these.
Jasmine Nightingale was, by all accounts, a civilian with a trust fund who cared for her younger brother. No other records were found that could tie either Jazz or Danny to crime, but Jason didn’t want to see them if they existed anyway. He hadn’t even met Danny yet and the kid, despite being prime adoption bait, was already one of Jason’s favorite people. He made Jazz proud with his intelligence and good-natured attitude, so Jason would do his best to form a good relationship with the kid.
He guessed he should be more concerned with how quickly he fell for his darling, but he wasn’t. It felt right. It felt safe. Like he could trust Jazz with every thought, every dream, every hope, every nightmare and she wouldn’t run away. He wanted her, plain and simple.
Thankfully Jazz was more or less on the same page as him.
She never had to say a word about how she felt for him, it was obvious in the way she would gravitate towards him, want to be around him, talk to him, simply be with Jason. How honored he felt to be gifted such attention by Jazz.
He didn’t know how to tell her about Red Hood though.
The Nightingales lived outside Crime Alley’s borders, in a shitty neighborhood of Gotham recently claimed by two new vigilantes- Phantom and Regent.
Jason tried to shove back the horrifying images of a vivisectied Phantom, screaming, sobbing and whimpering, but he would ever be able to forget.
The video of Regent killing the Fentons was glitched, but cross referenced with the Ghost Files, it was obvious the Regent of Now and Then were the same woman…entity that saved Phantom, no, avenged the ghost kid.
The fact that the Fentons death prevented a war was karmic justice, in his humble opinion.
Yet, there was something familiar about the Regent. Something that called to him on a baser level… as if he knew the entity behind the helmet.
But that was ridiculous…right?
Right?
Jazz was going to kill him all the way this time, Danny bemoaned while in flight. He really stuck his foot in it this time and yikes, he really needed to learn to keep his mouth shut.
He just had to go behind Jazz’s back and give the Ghost Files to Batman instead of Superman or Constantine. Big and blue wasn’t available when Danny found an opportunity and for shame if he wasted it! Sad trench coat man being there was really just a bonus, honestly.
With the Acts getting the League’s attention, it was time for a desperate move on the part of the GIW.
They infiltrated Gotham.
Danny had no idea how they had found a way past the border Lady Gotham kept a tight leash on, but the agents were able to pick up his trail with a lucky break on their end. He had a haunt in Gotham, which meant his ecto-signature was strong in that area and weak in others. A glaring neon sign of where the Phantom often could be found.
But Danny would never give up his haunt again, not without a fight.
This haunt didn’t just belong to him, not like Amity had. This had become the home of the Nightingales, the Phantom and the Regent. They had shed blood to claim it and would shed more to keep it.
If it meant admitting to his mistake, then so be it, that’s where he would start.
“Bold of you to assume I thought that far ahead.” Was probably not the best response to Jazz’s irate question of ‘Did you even consider what Batman, Mr. Contingencies-out-the-ass and minion-acquisition-instead-of-therapy, would do with the files?’
Needless to say, Jazz wasn’t impressed.
She had been rather happier lately, with her boyfriend Jason constantly in her orbit, but responsibility still weighed on her.
(Danny’s fault, he was aware, but he still had so much growing up to do before he was ready for the crown.)
Getting the AEA demolished was sure to take some weight from her, even if it would be only the beginning of resolving the repercussions of the United States’ crimes against the Infinite Realms.
It would be years before it would be considered repaid, the blood shed and existences snuffed out. The deaths of the Dr. Fentons were only a consequence of their actions, not truly recompense for the torture they inflicted on the people of the Realms.
(Danny never told Jazz, but he knew they didn’t die when the portal was destroyed.)
(He knew his sister had killed their parents to save him.)
(He still didn’t know how to feel about that.)
Lady Gotham offered a sad croon as Phantom curled his form under a gargoyle’s wings, the heavy rain an ironic ambiance for his mood.
There was nothing he could do about the GIW in Gotham until they showed themselves and they were doing an unusually good job of keeping on the down low. If it hadn’t been for the frantic screeches of the friendly shades and a few blob ghosts cuddling him for comfort, he would have been caught off-guard by an attack. As long as he stayed out of his haunt for a while, let his signature be caught somewhere else, then Jazz would be able to defend their home until he could deal with the bastards.
He just needed to wait.
Jazz had been livid with him admitting his fuck up with the files and deeming the GIW’s presence his fault for claiming a Haunt. With a threat to hug him and make him talk about his feelings until he no longer believed such a lie, Jazz agreed to remain in their Haunt until he could draw some of their forces away. Lady Gotham’s ecto-siganture would be enough to scramble their trackers once further into her city and she would subtly lead her Knights to the agents when able.
It wasn’t much, but it would have to be enough.
Phantom curled his tail around his laid back form, mimicking a cat as he texted Sam and Tucker with updates. They had sworn to visit him during Summer Break, but the Halfa wasn’t holding his breath. Gotham wasn’t safe for them. It wasn’t safe for anyone and that’s coming from a kid who can punt a building into the sun at a moment’s notice.
Amity was (laughably) the best place for them.
Phantom wasn’t really paying attention, absentmindly petting a blob ghost that was cuddled into his side, when he was joined by none other than the Red Hood.
Badass armor and weapons aside, the Hood was an Antihero he admired. The avenged dead sung his praises for all who’d listen.
And… he was very familiar.
Red Hood possessed a Proto-core, one he’d sensed before in his own home….with Jazz.
It couldn’t be. There was no way the Fenton luck could be that wonky that his big sister was dating Red Hood of all people, Jason Todd when unmasked. She had to know right? There was no way Jazz could miss the Proto-core signature of the Once-Revenant they’d housed for a while. Was Jazz okay with Jason’s past? Sure, Red Hood didn’t kill much anymore, but he was still a crime lord who thought severed heads in a duffel bag was a great gift to leave on someone’s doorstep, like a particularly picky cat.
“Uh, hi?”
Hood crouched down, rain blocked by his huge body, water droplets dripping off his red helmet. The white lenses gave nothing away as the Anti-hero spoke, “Hey kid. You ok?”
(Danny was well aware of how gentle and caring Red Hood was towards kids.)
(He couldn’t wait to be an uncle.)
“I’m fine, dude. Just chilling.”
“Under a gargoyle in Gotham?” The disbeliving tone made Phantom snort in laughter, because wow not the scariest concept to a halfa.
“Hey, it was either this or the sewers. I wouldn’t be caught dead,” Phantom chuckled a bit at his joke. “Down there without hazmat gear and the Anti-Creep stick.”
Hood snorted, the sound stackity through the modulator, “Fair enough. Don’t get caught by the big bat, ok? He doesn’t like Metas in his city.”
“Oi, being dead is a meta-cal condition.”
“Ugh,” Hood groaned, “a punster. You’re not dead, kid.”
“‘Fraid I am, my good dude. Fourteen and fried alive, zero outta ten, would not recommend.”
“...You’re a ghost?”
“Right in one! Name’s Phantom.” the Halfa offered, seeing no point in correcting the Anti-hero.
“Red Hood.”
“Dude, I know. The shades sing your praises given half a chance.”
“Shades?”
Phantom shrugged, “The restless dead, unable to pass over without a lot of ectoplasm.”
Hood didn’t ask what ectoplasm was, which surprised the Halfa. Did Batman share the Ghost Files with Red Hood?
“You’re from Amity Park, right?”
Phantom cringed at the name of his former haunt, anger bubbling in his gut, “I died there. I haunt Gotham now.”
“....I’m sorry.” Even with the modulator, Hood sounded genuinely sad for Phantom.
(Batman definitely shared the Ghost Files with the Anti-Hero.)
“Are you alright here? Do you need help?”
Phantom shook his head, “The GIW invaded Gotham tracking my Ecto-signature, so I’m leading them away from my Haunt.” He raised an eyebrow, “You should be careful too. You’re a pretty strong liminal, but they’ll still try to capture you.”
“No, they won’t get me. Phantom, where’s your haunt?”
If Hood was anyone else, Phantom would keep his mouth shut. A Haunt is sacred, a home for a Fraid, it was not some measly address freely given. Yet, Red Hood was also Jason Todd, Once-Revenant Death-claimed Champion turned Proto-core Liminal dating his older sister. If Jazz trusted him enough to date him, then it was good enough for Phantom to offer him a place in his Fraid. (He really couldn’t wait to be an uncle.)
A/N: This was beta-read by @meditating-cat, thanks!
The little bit at the end there... foreshadowing, perhaps? Ooh... all those baby names I could give a Hardcover kid.
Perhaps, perhaps not. Who knows. I have the end of this series mostly planned out, but it could likely change.
Thanks for reading!

Hii i wanted to tell you i loved that last chapter you dropped, I saw the tag major character death and immediately went ah. so it’s one of those fics. where jay dies and it’s just hurt hurt hurt as the last note. Ahhh just—they haven’t acknowledged each other as brothers yet your honor 💔 and Tim knows now (great pretending your found family aren’t also vigilantes acting from him) and Jason never knew, like peak potential. I can imagine he’s gonna go ??? who the fuck pulled my baby bird into the vigilante business and uh why?? without knowing (if this goes like we all know) that Tim was the one who wanted to honor him and keep Robin’s legacy alive. Also I can imagine the whole imaginary friend think goes back to a box at the back at his head?? Timmy was just getting warmer to the truth and Jay goes out to pull this stuff. classic. (me being annoyed) — Aww but really poor Jay I can imagine he’s never felt more spiteful of the fact that his powers don’t extend to phasing through things and not just walls. jay in my head: cursing under his breath how he just gets partial danny phantom adjacent abilities, i mean if he’s gonna have a power why not have it full pump I-can-walk-through-walls-disappear-and-fly package.
really just really excited where u take the fic, hope u don’t mind my rambling, just wanted to drop my thoughts 💜💜 also like take your time, i hope im not adding pressure or anything
Ohmygosh it's been so long since I've got an inbox on Tumblr!! And of course I don't mind because I'm ecstatic!!! I love hearing you guys' thoughts about my writing!!!
And Jay's death is like, such a constant in the fandom (and when he doesn't die, he still gets injured and traumatised so severely). And there was no way Tim would have let the Waynes know because if he had done that, they would have never, under any circumstances, let him go out to photograph anymore 😂😂
I actually did initially draft up his power to be able to phase through everything, but then I remembered all my evil plans for the series and I was like, skrttt~ STOP! And I had to nerf him 😅 Now I can picture a side story, or a small part of a fic of him cursing his power in Ethiopia 😈 (and why is partial danny phantom adjacent abilities so freaking funny 🤣)
Thank you so so much for the really fun and lovely inbox!!! I hope the direction of the series in the future will keep you interested 🥰🥰

Love love LOVE this post.
Here is my take on it when Danny continues to bullshit his way into the family.
---
Day 1
Danny beams at them at the breakfast table. "Did you sleep well?", he asked.
"Tt", replied Damian, "We were out for most of the night. Don't ask obvious questions Daniel."
"Damiiii", Danny whined, eliciting a smirk from Damian.
The rest of the family are stunned to see a side of Damian they rarely see.
Damian noticed them staring. He scowled and raised his eyebrow, "Well, what are you all standing there for? Let us join my brother at the table"
Day 7
Dick saw Danny( his youngest brother, his batling, his forgotten beloved brother ) exiting from the kitchen, carrying a tray full of snacks.
He blinked.
"Danny, what do you have there?", Dick asked.
Danny tilted his head, confused. "It's food for the movie night".
"Movie?", Dick parroted.
Danny sulked in annoyance, "Don't tell me you forgot. We always have movie night after every big fight".
"Huh", Dick whisperered, "I see. But I don't think last night was considered Big".
Danny pouted and huffed. "Well, I hereby declare that this night is a movie night. So mote it be."
Dick laughed.
"Does your humble servant get the honor of picking the movie?", he continued as he smiled indulgently at Danny.
Danny grinned widely and cheerfully answered, "Nope, last time it was Cassie's turn, now it's mine. I'm sure that you'll all like the movie I picked. I found it in one of Dad's shelves".
"I'm sure of it too kiddo. Now, how about you go first while I checked the kitchen for more snacks", said Dick.
Danny nodded and continued his walk to the living room, "Ok".
Once Danny is out of sight, Dick pulled out his phone and thought, "Well, I think this can be considered a family emergency. We don't want Danny to be disappointed".
Day 10
Tim was roused from his research by the sound of a knock on his door.
He stood up and opened it, surprised to see Danny.
"Sorry for disturbing you Tim", Danny started, "but did you see my telescope?"
Tim tried to remember if there was a telescope in the manor. There might be, with how old the Wayne manor is, but he is not sure if one of them is Danny's.
"Sorry Danny, but I don't know"
"Oh, I see. Well, maybe Alfred will know. I'll ask him". Danny turned to the right and started to walk to, assumingly, the garden.
"Sure", Tim replied, "but I think I forgot when you bought your telescope. Can you remind me?"
Danny turned his head to look at him worryingly, "It was dad on my first birthday here at home. Are you ok Tim? Did you sleep at all?"
"Sleep is for the weak. Anyways, good luck on your search", Tim waved to Danny.
"Thanks", said Danny as he walked away.
Tim closed the door and called Bruce.
"Tim, what is it?", answered Bruce on the other end.
"Telescope, buy it quick", Tim replied then ended the call.
Bruce, on his WE office, raised his eyebrow while looking at his phone.
Day 16
Jason had just entered the front door when he saw something green on the corner of his eyes. He turned his head quickly and saw Danny suddenly collapsing near the stairs.
"DANNY", he shouted, alarming everyone nearby. Jason run to Danny and kneeled to touch him.
"Did it hurt?", Jason asked.
"Danny mumbled something against the rug.
"What?"
"I SAID", Danny exhaled as he raised his head from the floor, "No, I dug my way up from hell".
Someone snorted behind Jason's back. It was Dick.
"Well, if you can answer my half-assed pick up line then you sure as hell can stand and clean yourself up".
"JAaaasoooon", Danny whined, "I cant stand up. Please be my knight and shining armor".
Jason fell silent as he remembered Danny's files. "Fine", sighed Jason, "but this time only". He picked up Danny bridal style.
Danny stared and grinned at Jason.
"What?", Jason gritted.
"You always say that. Last time and the time before", Danny laugh.
Jason blinked in shock at Danny for a second. Before he said, "I mean it this time squirt".
"Sure sure. I'll keep what you said in mind", Danny leaned his head on Jason's shoulders as they both (and Dick following them from behind) go to the infirmary.
Day 20
It was deep into the night when Bruce suddenly opened his eyes. He stared above him, wondering what caused him to wake up.
A loud thunderclap rings out as a lightning flash illuminated the whole room.
A knock on the door and the door opened, "Dad?".
Bruce sits on the bed. There, Bruce saw his youngest fidgeting below the doorway.
"Danny", Bruce called out as he opened his blankets. He beckoned to the space beside him.
Danny smiled happily and trotted to the bed. Burrying himself under the covers, closing his eyes, and snuggling beside his dad.
"Good night dad"
Bruce feels his heart warm as he looked down at Danny. "Good night chum", he whispered as he runs his hand down Danny's head.
---
Hope you enjoyed this.
So I've seen a couple of Demon twin prompts that have Danny and Damien knowing and keeping in touch with each other over the years with the Batfam none the wiser (The funniest being that Damien had Danny go and replace him for a week then the two played it off like it had been happening since Damien was brought to the manor. Another good one had Danny quickly dropping off Ellie with Damien leaving him to introduce Bruce to his granddaughter). How would this play out for you? Would Danny have run with Damien faking killing him, would he have just disappeared from the compound (?) One day?
Their mother had given birth to identical twins. Damien was born three whole minutes before Danny, which shouldn't have mattered much but to the Ra's it meant the world of difference.
Ra's did not want to raise more than one hire. He did not believe in spares or succession struggles. He gave Talia the ultimatum,- pick one twin to raise in their ways and give the other up to a civilian family or lose them both and her status.
Talia will never claim to be an angel. She knew that her heart was cold and wrenched as needed to cleanse the world. She was far too selfish to even consider becoming a civilian away from the league.
It wasn't a bad life, in the end, to become a regular civilian but it was not for her. Ra's had many children who were never deemed worthy of being part of his greater plans. He never mistreated them, but ultimately he ignored them and they grew up not knowing the blood that ran through their veins.
Talia herself knew of six siblings- all different ages and races- that she had seen from a distance. Her father would take her sometimes to see them, to be reminded that unlike them, she was destined for greatness.
They were nicknamed as the Lost by one of Father's past heirs. He had died fifty years before Talia's time but he was known for his surprisingly humorous outlook on life. How Ra could stand it, she will never know.
Sometimes Talia pitted her Lost siblings. They would be outlived by their father- as all of his children thus far have been- but they would never know the waste their lives had become. They would never know the glory of battle, the rush of leading an army, or the satisfaction of successful missions.
They lived in a rose-colored world inside a small fish bowl. Her Lost siblings would never know the vast wonder of the world.
Sometimes Talia envied her Lost siblings. Even though they had no real impact on the world, no real importance, they lived peaceful lives. They grew, made friends, and fell in love without fear of being betrayed. A foolish belief but one that seemed almost blissful.
How light would their shoulders be to not have to carry the weight that Talia has known all her life? Weight to be the best, to be the killer her father required, to allow her son to head to a possible death day after day.
None of them had to worry about their children never returning from a mission like she did. That's why she trained Damian so harshly, why she pushed and pushed until he reached perfection. If she didn't, then Damian would be bested in the field and his death would shatter what little humanity she still held.
She had taken Danny- her sweet youngest boy- to America to entrust him to her Beloved. It was only as she arrived on American soil did she realized that Bruce would not be satisfied with only one twin.
He would do everything in his power to get them both. Despite the years he trained with them, after learning their ways and their mission, Bruce did not approve of the League.
He was powerful enough to succeed in taking Damian as well if she gave him the chance.
Talia chooses to not do so. She instead stopped at the closest city that was miles and miles away from Bruce Wayne. She found Amity Park, a small sleepy town that would never gather much attention let alone Bruce's, and located a couple struggling for a second child.
After her men screened them and after making sure that they were harmless despite their eccentric research into ghosts, she gave the Fentons her Danny in adoption.
When she signed the adoption forms, Danny offically became a Lost sibling. She flew home, and held Damian just a tad bit tighter and longer, allowing only a few tears to fall before shutting away her heart.
She visited him through the years, but never within sight. Danny was unaware of her presence, as he stumbled his way with his life. He was unpopular with his peers, uncoordinated in basically everything, and the idea of him harming anything was laughable.
He had too much of his Father's heart but none of his will.
Talia made the right choose in getting him out. He would not have survived long within her lifestyle.
When her sons turned six, Talia had chosen to take Damian to see his Lost brother. She had two motives for doing so. The first was to show Damian what became of those deemed unworthy. To let him see that he had been given the honor of being the twin to inherit all that the Al Ghuls could offer.
The second was so that Damian could see his brother still lived, even as worthless and meaningless as he did so, he was still alive. He would know nothing of their world but he would still be able to walk through a different one.
She hoped but never voiced that he would find comfort in this and maybe even affection for her foolish Lost brother.
_________________________________________________________
What she was not aware of, was that Damian Al Ghul was just as selfish as she was. Once he saw what he deemed as his there was little in this world that would stop him from owning it.
He believed he was entitled to having a connection with his blood brother so underneath Talia's and the League of Assassins' noses, Damian did just that. He officially introduced himself to Danny when he was eight and told him the truth about their heritage.
Danny welcomed him with open arms. Despite being polar opposites in personality the identical twins were the best of friends. Damian always looked forward to seeing his brother for a short visit whenever the opportunity arose.
Danny was always pleased to host him for a weekend and the Fentons were more than happy to have him over. They may not have been able to adopt Damian but he was just as much their son as Danny was.
Damian just wishes he could return the gesture but if he ever had the Fentons over at Nanda Parbat they would all be dead within the first thirty minutes.
It was best to go to Danny.
Then Damian went to live with Father. It was a rough adjustment and he is not proud of his less-than-optimal reaction to Father's adoptive siblings seeing as the Fentons had proved blood is not required to love a child. It took months of getting used to living there before he was comfortable enough to go visit Danny again.
They spoke every night on the phone, however, since he no longer had to worry about traitorous warriors reporting his contact with a Lost sibling. He told Danny everything about the Waynes, just as Danny told him everything about being Phantom.
They just forgot to tell any of the Waynes about him.
Damian offered to have him over now that he knew Father would never harm his brother, and that the other Wayne children wouldn't kill him either. Danny, ever the most mischievous of the two, had a better idea.
"We could prank the family instead." Danny chirps floating above his bed, headphones in his ear as tries to play videogames upside down. He grins at the screen where Damian stares back at him.
Facetiming Danny can be a bit difficult when his brother has a hard time sitting still.
Damian wasn't strong enough to say no to him.
____________________________________________________________
"Master Bruce" Alfred didn't shout exactly but it was a near darn thing that had everyone in the cave tensing up. They all turned to an older man who was nervously gesturing to a screen. "We seem to have a guest"
They gather around the older man, watching as a teenage boy wearing baggy oversized sleepwear rampages through the kitchen in an ill-fated attempt to make...a sandwitch?
"How did he get in?" Bruce demands at once watching the boy pour himself a large cup of milk. His face was turned away so they couldn't see him clearly but-
"What are you all babbling about? That's not a guest." Damian scoffs after pushing his way to the front of the computers. He waves a hand at the stranger and it is conveniently at that exact moment that he turns around gulping down his milk.
It's an exact replica of his youngest. What in the world?
"Demon Brat" Jason starts slowly, hand reaching for his gun. Bruce would be angry by that, except he's not exactly sure that his son is standing with them now "Who is that?
"Obviously it's Daniel."
"Who?" Dick asks
Here Damian actually pauses looking around at everyone in as close to alarm as Bruce has ever seen him. "Daniel. My brother. Do you all not remember him?"
"Master Damian, this is the first time I have heard of your brother," Alfred stressed, the tone just a tad bit off from being upset. Damian's eyes widen behind his mask suddenly looking rather small.
He stares at the butler like he has never seen him properly nodding his head to the Batcomputer. "Check for yourself."
"I'll do it." Tim offers strolling over. With Babs on vacation with her father, he is the best with computers. He will know if something has been altered. A few clicks on the keyboard was the only sound within the cave as everyone stood around in unease.
A quick hiss between his teeth has Tim announcing. "Demon Brat isn't lying."
There on the multiple screens is proof that for the past four years- since Damian came to live with them- there was Danny. The brother with a medical condition that made being a Bat impossible.
Tim even had a personal folder- one he made but couldn't remember making based on his wonderous expression- titled "Angle Brat". Apparently, he and Danny got on like a house on fire. At least according to the files.
"Are you all quite sure you have no recollection of Daniel?" Damian questioned. His stance is protective, tense in a way Bruce has come to know as his son being nervous.
None of this makes sense. The last time Damian was this nervous was the last large Justice Leauge mission when all hands were on deck to fix the timeline-
Oh No.
"Damian, on the last rank 10 mission of the league you were the only one on the Watchtower when Flash shifted us back. Even Alfred was commanding a tank that day." He states waiting until his son nods in agreement. Around him, everyone was equally tense likely realizing the same thing.
"I was not alone Father. Daniel was with me. I couldn't possibly control all those stations alone."
Of course.
"Damian, I'm afraid the last mission erased Daniel from our timeline. I do not remember him."
His son's eyes practically bug out of his head. He swings around in small circles looking towards the rest of the family. His jaw clenched at their blank expressions.
None of them remembered Daniel either.
"We must inform Daniel at once-"
"No!" Dick shouts, cutting him off. There was a slump in his shoulders as he spoke much less sharply now. "If we do that, there is a chance that Time will try to force his existence out. It could.... erase Daniel completely."
"So what? We just pretend to know the kid? Lie to him?" Steph scoffs,
"Yeah as much as it sucks. I've worked with Bart long enough to know that there is a real danger in telling Daniel the truth." Tim sighs running his hands over his face.
"That's fucking great." Jason sneers, kicking a chair. Duke's hands are curled into tight fists, while Cass is looking at Damian with a sad frown.
Damian sneers at them, fleeing into the showers. Cass is one step behind him. Likely for the best, his eldest daughter has always been the best one to confine into. If anyone can get Damian talking about his feelings without being too pushy, it's her.
Alfred remains silent but his posture is stiff and straight. He is equally as displeased as his more explosive children. Not that Bruce couldn't blame him.
His heart has already shattered a dozen times over once Daniel's files have been brought up. He has forgotten his son. Has lost him in a way as close to death.
He flickers through them with the family. Everyone wants to remember as much as possible. There is so much. Daniel has a heart condition that has him attached to a heart pump, his consistently cold and is rarely strong enough to wander too far away from the manor.
In fact, he seems to collapse a lot like his legs just become intangible. Talia isn't aware he is still alive- Damian broke the rules to get him out of the league before his plan execution due to his condition.
Despite all of this, Danny had the biggest heart out of them. He seemed to be the kind of person with an easy smile, and happy pun waiting. He is so gentle that Tim's nickname "Angel Brat" is not just a mirror of Damian's
And Bruce forgot him.
To make matters worse the cave's elevator dings on, and down it comes Daniel himself. He looks exhausted, likely not used to being up so late but he smiles at them all warmly anyway
"Hey guys! Welcome home!" He greets. He rushes forward, hugging everyone with ease that not even Dick has been able to do. His movements are done so naturally that this must be how he greets them every night.
Everyone lets him and he doesn't seem surprised by the fact they return the hugs.
Bruce feels like vomiting as his youngest- Damian is older- smiles up at him. "Welcome home Dad! Love you."
"I..." His words catch in his throat. Daniel tilts his head confused but Bruce pushes through wrapping his arms around him just as tightly. "I love you too son."
"Tell the others you love them too" Daniel whispers in his ear. "Don't forget that they need to be shown through words and gestures too Dad!"
Bruce stiffens, unsure if he should but he doesn't have enough information to deny Daniel anything. If he suspects something is wrong he may zap himself out of existence. He can't let that happen.
He pulls back from Daniel after a moment, and then without giving the others warning, he reaches for the child closest to him. Jason yelps as he is dragged into Bruce's warm embrace. "I love you, Jason."
"Ugh what?" Jason sounds confused from above him- when did his little boy get so tall?- but he wraps his arms around him too, giving the beaming Daniel a quick glance before he mutters. "Love you too old man."
Bruce turns to Dick who is practically bouncing on his heels, arms held out. He steps into them easily, grunting as Dick squeezes him with all his might. "I love you, Dick"
"I love you too!"
Tim is staring with wide longing eyes over Dick's shoulder and Bruce knows he will have to hug him next. Behind him, Daniel has moved to embrace both Jason and Steph, which triggered a group-wide personal hug.
Even Alfred is there affording hugs and I love yous.
It's.....nice.

None of the Bats are good enough to read the body launage as Cass is. She saw the mischievous glee her new brother was hiding as he went around hugging everyone.
Damian taps her wrist. "Will you keep quiet of Daniel's harmless jest?"
She smiles. "Funny. They think they can't say no to him. "
"Oh, Dad! Now that you're back can I paint your nails?" Daniel asks loudly. "I have the best black nail polish!"
"....I suppose that is fine."
Damian cracks a smile. "My brother is a menace."

Always be my plus one - part 3
Ok, look, it's 4 am, there are going to be typos, and we're just going to have to deal with it. I also tried to find a gif that was Tyson and Cale but I couldn't find one in the gif insert thing on here so I just went with this one (it feels weird to change it up but like, oops)
I make no promises that you aren't going to be mad at me for this part so have fun !
This is shorter than the last part, coming in at around 5k words.
The only warnings I have here are implied sex.
Translations for the Italian in here: "tu sei uno stronzo" - you're an ass(hole)
stronzino - little asshole
Also want to thank @justjosty @zinka8 @hockeylvr59 @hockeywocs anons and I'm sure I'm forgetting people for helping me write this part but ily all I'm just dumb and tired

Valentine’s Day
The Feast Day of St. Valentine is traditionally celebrated in the Western Catholic Church on February 14, to honor the patron saint of love. Though not traditionally celebrated as a Catholic holiday, millions of people celebrate the day of love with those who mean the most to them. While pessimists of the day say it’s a ‘holiday made up by greeting card companies,’ approximately 190 million Valentine’s Day cards are sent in the United States alone, not including cards given by school children to their classmates. Couples enjoy the holiday with a romantic night out, presents, flowers, chocolates, etc., while those who don’t have someone or don’t care do whatever they want without the pressure of living up to a holiday that doesn’t mean very much in the grand scheme of things.
=============
February 12, 2022
“Where are you going tonight?” Matthew’s voice came through his younger sister’s phone. He had called early in the week to see if Anne could babysit Harper so he and Stephanie could do something for Valentine’s Day without having to shell out an extravagant amount of money on a sitter.
“I’m, uh,” Anne hesitates, “going out with Tyson. Sorry.” She hears Matthew let out a sigh on the other end. “Hey, stronzo, why don’t you ask Lucy? Her and Jason never do anything on Valentine’s Day.”
Matthew starts talking about how the last time he asked Lucy last minute to watch his daughter, despite their girls being best friends, she ended up going on a fifteen-minute rant. While Anne gets her heels on, staring at herself in the mirror and admiring the floor-length, red dress she had on the slit going up the side for no one but herself, Matthew continues to tell her about how his twin goes on and on about needing a schedule at all times, how she can’t just drop everything in a moment’s notice because he wants to do something with his wife.
“Hey, Matthew,” she cuts him off, trying to shrug her coat on, “Why didn’t you ask Lucy or Sebby after I said no earlier this week?”
“Because I didn’t think you actually had plans.”
“Again, tu sei uno stronzo.”
“I am not an ass!” he detests.
“Fine, you’re a stronzino, happy?” Anne hears him stammer again, not letting him get a word in, “I have to go, I’ll talk to you later, ok? Ask Ma, Dad’s off in Florida right now so she would probably love to have Harper for the night.”
He lets out another sigh, Stephanie’s voice coming through in the background despite Anne’s inability to understand what she was saying. “Fine. Have fun with Tyson. I don’t need another niece or nephew around Halloween, though, ok?”
“Don’t be gross,” she says, hanging up and finally heading out the door.
Her cousin Adriana was getting married to her soon-to-be wife, Izzy. Her family had no idea that she was the only one who still talked to them, her mother having a fight with her brother after their parents died when Anne and her siblings were younger and vowing to never talk to him again. So far, the stubbornness that seems to run through her mom’s blood going strong since it had been over a decade since she had last seen her brother. Anne was invited to Uncle Frankie’s daughter’s wedding, but no one else in her family.
Adriana and Izzy had this Valentine’s Day-themed wedding, everyone asked to wear red or pink in theme with the holiday, Anne not doubting that there would be paper hearts and cut-out cupids as the decor. The wedding gift she bought them, one of the first things she found on their registry that Anne could afford, was shipped to the apartment they already shared two weeks ago, Anne just needing to remember the card.
She was fully prepared to just sit in the corner with a bunch of people she didn’t know and watch as her cousin got married to the love of her life. Anne wasn’t sure that that side of her family would recognize her after how many years, guaranteeing her to spend her time on the sideline.
Anne slips into the back of the church, seeing no one she knew or recognized to even go up to and sit with them. Everyone was dressed in red, pink, and black. A bit too much for her own taste, but at least she looked good in red and would have worn the color anyway. ‘Note to self, no themed weddings,’ Anne thinks, not particularly fond of the lack of color or real choice that everyone had in figuring out what to wear.
A blonde boy in a red suit walks by her, too far past her to get a good look at him. There was something about him that caught her attention. Anne knew that walk, but she had no idea where she knew it from. It didn’t stop her from admiring him from afar, though, the short blonde hair and the obviously fit physique under the suit captivated her for whatever reason, leaving her practically unable to pay attention to the ceremony in front of her. Not that she cared, at this point she was just there to enjoy the free food she knew would be good at the reception later.
Anne sat at the table against the wall, her cousin not bothering to make a seating chart and just leaving it up to the guests to sit where they pleased. That meant she didn’t have to talk to anyone she didn’t want to, being virtually left alone at a wedding where she knew no one.
“Anne?” a familiar voice snaps her out of the trance she fell into watching Ana’s sister and brother-in-law, Catie and Danny dancing with their two daughters, remembering seeing their pictures on Facebook when they were born, not realizing how much they had grown.
She turns to the man in the red suit who had her attention throughout the ceremony. “Cale?” she smiles at him, not sure how the two had missed they would be at the same wedding this weekend. Since New Year's Eve, the two of them had been texting, calling, FaceTiming, they had hung out, spent the night with each other, Cale insisting he buy her dinner at least once a week. The only reason they weren’t dating each other was because neither of them had said they were. They both said they were busy this weekend, but who would have thought they would end up at the same place. “What are you doing here?”
“Izzy’s brother and I grew up playing hockey together. I grew up with her. What are you doing?” he asks her, taking the seat next to her.
“Ana’s my cousin. Her dad is my mom’s older brother.”
Cale smiles at her, Anne’s heart racing at the sight of it. “So I get to meet your family?”
Anne shakes her head. “I’m the only one here,” she tells him, explaining the family drama that went on between Frankie and Teresa.
Cale looks down at his lap, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his suit jacket. The red bowtie, red pants, red jacket even against the black shirt were so much Anne couldn’t tell if his cheeks were red because of the reflection of his clothes or for another reason. “Tyson’s met your family, hasn’t he?”
She nods, taking his hand in hers. “I told you, Tyson and I are just friends. I needed someone to come with me to a family thing, so he came with me.” Cale nods, not entirely sure that something wasn’t up with her and Tyson. Something was off, there was something he was sure Anne was leaving out, but he wasn’t sure. “Hey, I’ve seen Tyson, what, three times since New Year's? All of them when I was with you. I like you, Cale.”
Cale leans over for a kiss, his hand grazing Anne’s thigh, sending a shiver down her spine. “How about we dance like we did on New Year's?” he asks, standing from the seat, shrugging off the red jacket before he extended his hand out to her.
She rolls her eyes, getting up with him anyway. “I told you then, too, that I don’t like dancing.”
“And yet,” he says, pulling her close, his hand finding the small of her back while he presses his forehead against hers, gazing into her eyes, “you danced with me all night then, and you got up to dance with me tonight.”
Anne laughs, knowing he was right, burying her face in his shoulder, swearing she heard some camera’s clicking, probably the wedding photographer hanging around somewhere and taking pictures of the guests dancing.
“I know I have to say this about the brides when they come in,” Cale whispers in her ear, “but you are the most beautiful girl here.”
Anne could feel herself blushing, her mind flashing back to New Year’s Eve when Tyson told her she looked beautiful. He seemed so genuine saying it, Anne thinking back and not sure if he meant it or was actually pretending. But with Cale, she knew. Cale meant it. “You’re not so bad yourself,” she tells him, ghosting his lips before kissing him.
Being with Cale felt fine. Not perfect, but fine. It was right, but not correct, and Anne couldn’t figure out why.
Everyone starts clearing off the dance floor, the bridal party getting ready to come in. Cale takes Anne’s hand and leads her back to the table where he left his jacket, some other people finding their home base at the same table. Cale knew one of the men at the table, probably from their little hockey group that involved Izzy’s brother. The bridesmaids and bridesmen, as the DJ put it, started coming in, Cale leaning back with his arm slung around the back of Anne’s chair. She leaned back into him, his fingertips dancing up and down her arm as they watched everyone come in.
They watched Ana and Izzy dance their first one as wives, Anne’s stomach starting to make noise as they waited for the food to come.
Cale leans over, nervous about what he was about to whisper in her ear. “Are you hungry for food or maybe something more?”
Anne felt her entire body go numb at his words. They had been seeing each other for a month and a half already, so was what he was insinuating really that strange of an idea? “That depends.”
“On?” he asks, nibbling on her ear before kissing the skin right behind it, losing any sense of care over who at their table was potentially watching.
“On how long you think we need to wait before we can slip out without it being rude?”
Cale inhaled sharply, wishing he could say right now. “At least until they cut the cake. Unless,” he says, his hand moving up her thigh, slowly in case she decided she wanted it to stop, “Unless you wanted to try to find somewhere to sneak away to now.”
“Not for our first time,” she tells him, reaching up to cup his cheek. “And not with my family around,” she laughs.
“I’m fine with that,” he tells her, kissing her. “Your place or mine, though?”
“Well, I drove myself here.”
“And I got a ride.”
Anne smiles, crossing her legs in hopes that whatever she felt would be stifled by that simple action. “So it looks like it’s going to be mine.”
They spent the rest of the night waiting for the moment the cake was cut so they could leave as planned, Cale’s hand never leaving her leg unless he really needed both hands to do something.
Anne could feel her heart racing as she watched Ana and Izzy smash their cake in each other’s face, Anne looking over to Cale and smiling. “You wanna go?” she asks, her keys already out of her bag and in her hand.
Cale drags her out without saying a word, Anne leading him to her car. He walks over to the driver’s side, his arms wrapped around her waist with her back pressed against her car. “You’re sure about this?” he asks her, his eyes flicking between hers and her lips.
“Yeah,” she says, kissing him before he opens the door for her. She couldn’t wait to get home, sure she broke a few traffic laws as she sped back to her apartment with Cale sitting next to her in the passenger seat, his leg shaking the entire time.
They got to the elevator, Cale leaning against her against the wall with his lips pressed against hers, Anne’s hands already working to unbutton his shirt. Cale’s kisses trailed down her jaw to her collarbone, his grip tightening on her waist.
Anne pulled away to lead him down the hallway, practically running, partially due to anticipation for what they were about to do, and because Anne could feel a breeze on her back, indicating that Cale had already unzipped her dress. That, coupled with the fact that Cale’s shirt was already open, his jacket in his free hand, Anne had no desire for any of her neighbors to be given the chance to see her and however Cale was to her already getting naked before closing the door.
As soon as she unlocked her door, Cale had her turned back around, kicking the door closed as he carried her to her bedroom, Anne able to feel everything about him against her body. Cale laid her down on her bed, his lips never leaving hers as he positioned himself over her, sliding her dress off while she did the same with his shirt. Anne’s breath hitched at the sight of him, his body perfect while he stared her down, the first time she saw the typically innocent boy she had been seeing with a mischievous grin covering his face, his eyes darkening at the thought of doing what they had both been wanting to do all night.
“You’re sure about this?” he asks one more time.
Anne nods, taking his face in her hands. “Yes, Cale. I’m sure.”

February 13, 2022
Anne woke up the next morning, the events of the night before rushing back despite finding the space he had occupied in her bed empty. Her dress was on the floor, Cale’s red bowtie somehow having ended up on her night stand. Maybe he left it there as an excuse to see her again, making a mental note to put it in the living room so she would remember it the next time she saw him.
He had slipped out at some point that morning, Anne playing the voicemail that he left her while she slipped on a t-shirt to cover herself. “Hey, Anne. Sorry, I couldn’t stay, but morning skate was calling. I,” she hears him sigh, knowing he had a stupid grin on his face for whatever it was he was about to say, “I can’t wait to have another night like last night with you.”
It was her turn to have the stupid smile on her face as Cale continues, “Um, anyway, I’ve got something going on with JT and some of the other guys tomorrow for Valentine’s Day, a, uh, charity thing? I think? So would you be free this weekend for a proper date for the holiday? You know, not as crowded, not as much pressure, ideally the same outcome, if you’ll allow it? Oh, hey Tyson,” she hears him say, figuring that he was calling her on the way into the rink despite her being unable to hear Tyson. “Yeah, I’m planning Valentine’s Day with Anne. No, not tomorrow night, this weekend. Uh, Anne, I’ve gotta go, but let me know about, say, Friday night? Alright, talk to you later. Bye.”
Valentine’s Day date with Cale? Part two, more like, but still. Anne liked the sound of that.
“So, uh,” Tyson starts, already dreading what he was about to hear from his teammate given what he had heard him say into his phone. “You and Anne?”
“Yeah,” Cale breathes out, chuckling at the thought of what happened last night. “We, um,” Cale couldn’t even get a full sentence out, acting like a child who just got the toy he had been begging his parents for on Christmas morning. He couldn’t remember the last time he was that happy. “We spent the night together last night. I left from her place this morning.”
More of their teammates were filtering into the locker room, looking at Cale’s face turn bright red while Tyson stood there with him looking like he just about wanted to die. “Ok, but did you spend the night, or spend the night?” Ryan asks.
Cale started to stammer out nonsense, not really wanting to divulge the private details of his and Anne’s night despite the guys teasing him and congratulating him for what he wasn’t saying.
“Guys, keep it civil. Anne wouldn’t want us talking about any of this,” Tyson pipes in, Cale letting out a sigh of relief as the guys disperse to get ready for morning skate.
“Thanks,” Cale tells him, going off on his own to get his gear on.
JT appears by Tyson’s side, a stupid smirk on his face. “Would Anne not want us talking about anything, or would you not want us talking about anything?”
“Well, Anne definitely wouldn’t.”
“Oh, come on, we both know Cale would never.”
“Doesn’t mean I want him to have the chance.”
“You’re treading in deep water, dude,” JT sighs.
Tyson looks at him, hating that he knew what he meant. He had barely seen Anne, despite her brother’s texts from the night before asking if Anne really couldn’t watch Harper because of the two of them going out, Tyson going along with the lie just in case. “I don’t know what you want from me.”
“It seems like you don’t know what you want from Anne, either,” JT shrugs. “But Cale does, and he got it.”

February 14, 2022
12 hour shifts were the only shifts Anne knew. And they were the shifts that Anne detested the most. She was fine the first ten hours, but the last two always seemed to suck more than anything, leaving her exhausted for the rest of the day, into the night, depending on when she got home in the first place.
All she wanted to do was order dinner from the Thai place down the street, having it delivered despite her really not needing to since it was within walking distance, plop herself on her couch and watch whatever reality TV Lucy had texted her that she thought Anne would like. Anne knew she would turn it off after a single episode and switch to Food Network, but at least she could tell her sister she tried.
Anne walks to her apartment, dragging her feet to her door when she sees someone sitting on the ground, his head down looking at his phone. “Tyson?”
He gets up, grabbing the two bags he had with him as the smell of food filled her nose. “Happy Valentine’s Day, my fake girlfriend,” he says, raising the bags while Anne opens the door to let him in.
“I’m confused,” she tells him as he sets everything down.
“Well, Matthew called me on Saturday asking if the two of us were sure we couldn’t watch his daughter, and I figured he might as well have some sort of photographic evidence as proof of us spending Valentine’s Day together,” Tyson explains. “So, I figured I’d go all out: flowers, dinner, and a present. You know, really convince them that we’re together.”
Anne stares at him for a second, not sure why her heart was racing at the thought of him going out of his way to keep up this facade with her family. “I don’t think I like that you and Matthew are so ‘buddy-buddy.’ Or that fact that he didn’t believe me the first two times I told him I was busy on Saturday night. And I thought that you guys had a charity thing tonight?”
“Oh, you didn’t know?” Tyson asks, handing her the container of food as she joined him on the couch, the Thai food she was planning on ordering right in front of her. “We have a groupchat. Yeah, it’s me, Sebby, Lucy, and Matthew.”
Anne scoffs, rolling her eyes at his failed attempt at a joke. “And let me guess: you gossip about me the entire time.”
“Actually,” he says, his mouth full of food, “you never come up. They think of me as the fourth sibling. The name Anne means nothing.”
Anne laughs, Tyson admiring the way her eyes closed as her smile grew. God, he wished he had gotten to her before Cale did. Why did he have to leave her alone at all on New Year’s Eve? If he were by her side the entire night like he had wanted to be, then he wouldn’t have to pretend to be her boyfriend, he could actually be getting somewhere with her.
“Hm,” Anne hums, swallowing her mouthful of food. “You said flowers and a present. When do I get those?”
“You can get them now on the condition that I can take a video to send to your siblings,” he offers, pulling out his phone and pushing the bag with the flowers and gift behind him. Anne rolls her eyes, smiling and nodding while he starts the video. He hands her the card first. “Read it.”
Anne pulls it out of the envelope, glitter getting everywhere and making her cringe, knowing that it would be impossible to get off her scrubs later on. It was covered with roses and hearts, bringing her right back to the wedding that weekend. “No one has ever made me feel like this. To the woman I love: Happy Valentine’s Day,” Anne reads, feeling a lump forming in her throat. The card was so corny, a little too corny for her taste, but coming from Tyson, she didn’t know why she loved it. She shakes her head, laughing at Tyson. “I love you, too,” she lies.
Tyson swallows hard at her words, wishing she meant them, pulling out the flowers from the bag and handing them to her. She looks down at the flowers, trying to figure out what they are before looking up at him. “Queen Anne’s Lace?”
“Queen Anne’s Lace for my Queen, Anne,” he tells her, cringing at his own words.
Anne giggles, placing them in her lap. “And my favorite flowers, anyway. Thank you, Tyson.”
“Wait, I have one more thing,” he says, hoping that the camera wasn’t shaking too much while he reached for the gift he bought her.
He hands it to her, a small red box wrapped with a gold bow. She unties it carefully, opening the box and gasping at the sight of it. A golden necklace with a white enamel heart as the charm, a golden pattern outlining the heart. “Tyson, it’s,” she starts, unable to find the words, “it’s beautiful.”
He stops the recording, figuring he had enough to hit send to his ‘girlfriend's' siblings. “Let me put it on you,” he says, Anne turning around and moving her hair out of the way. “I thought you would like it.”
Anne studies his face, the smile plastered on it despite her knowing that he didn’t mean it. “You didn’t have to do this.”
He shrugs, grabbing his food off the table and staring at it now in his lap. “It was fun. I’ve never had a girlfriend who I could buy presents like this for. I mean, I still don’t, but I have you.”
“Oh, come on. You, Tyson Jost, have never had a girlfriend? Look at you,” she says, praying that she was careful with the words she chose. “You’re gorgeous, you’re sweet, you’re funny, you get along with everyone you meet.”
Tyson hated hearing Anne go on about him, knowing that she was just saying it as a friend instead of something more. He scoffs, trying to save face from whatever pain or other emotion he was feeling. “Come on,” he says, not believing her anyway.
“I’m serious!” she insists, reaching up and starting to fidget with her new necklace. “Any girl would be lucky to have you as her boyfriend. I’m lucky to even have you as a fake boyfriend.”
Tyson nods, turning his body to face the TV instead of Anne. “So what are we watching?” he asks, changing the subject and putting his feet up on the table, Anne doing the same.
“Whatever’s on Food Network?” she suggests, holding the remote in the air pointed at the TV.
The two of them settle in, Tyson not paying attention to the show she had turned on. “Hey, what’s that?” Tyson asks, racing over to the red fabric that was on Anne’s coffee table.
“Oh,” Anne blushes, taking it from Tyson. “This is Cale’s. He, um, let it the other night,” she explains, Tyson watching her turn his teammates bowtie over in her hands.
“So you and Cale are doing pretty well?” he asks. Anne looks at him, not sure if she really wanted to tell him about it. “Come on, we’re friends. You can talk to me about anything.”
“I mean,” she says, putting down the bowtie on the table, not taking her eyes off of it. “We’re together? I think?” Tyson already hated that he even offered to listen to her talk about her and his teammate. “I like him. A lot. And I know he likes me, but,” Anne lets out a sigh, not sure where to even take her sentence.
“But, what?” Tyson asks.
“I don’t know,” she shakes her head, looking confused. “Everything is great, but it’s, I,” she stammers. “Something is off, and I can’t figure out what.”
Tyson stares at her for a second, trying to figure out what to say. “It’s probably just that it’s new,” he shrugs. “Everything seems weird when you’re still figuring it out. You and Cale will be ok,” he tells her, hating hearing those words come out of his mouth.

February 19, 2022
Anne stared at herself in the mirror, the black turtleneck she borrowed from her sister coupled with a beige skirt and black tights on her as she got ready for her date with Cale. He was bound to show up any minute, promising each other they weren’t going to do gifts due to a general lack of time on both ends. She didn’t believe that he wasn’t going to get her a gift, however, sneaking out to the bakery down the street and buying some pastries that the two of them would like, giving them an excuse to both show up back at her apartment. And if he didn’t give her a gift, then she got the pastries all to herself.
If not, she could share them with Tyson, who had been showing up at her place or asking her to go to his place any free chance they both had.
She heard Cale knocking at her door, Anne rushing as fast as she could in her heels to answer. Cale was standing there, a black crewneck similar to her own turtleneck, paired with dark jeans, black boots, and a grey coat. Cale kisses her hello, one hand behind his back with the other resting on her hip. “Every time I see you I don’t think you could get more beautiful, and yet, you do.”
“You’re cheesy,” she jokes as he kisses her forehead, Cale laughing against her skin. “But you,” Anne says, resting her hands on his chest, “get more handsome every time I see you, too. And, you’re hiding a present behind your back, aren’t you, even though we said no presents.”
Cale laughs, closing the door behind him. “Maybe I saw this and had to get it for you,” he admits, kissing her again and holding up the bag near her head.
“Should I open it now or should I do it later when we come back here?” she flirts, holding the bag in her hand.
“Oh, we’re coming back here?” he teases her, trailing kisses down her neck.
“I might have gotten some dessert for us so we had an excuse to relive last Saturday. Plus, you left your bowtie here,” she gestures to it, still sitting on her table, “And I was thinking maybe you wear that tonight instead of keeping it off?”
Cale raises his eyebrow at her, a silly smile on his face. “And what else would I be wearing?”
Anne shrugs, pretending to act innocent. “I was thinking only the bowtie,” she tells him, feeling his grip around her tighten at the thought.
Cale kisses her again, unable to keep his hands off the girl in front of him. If he could, he would forget dinner altogether and just go straight to dessert, but he knew Anne wasn’t that kind of girl, and he wasn’t about to force her into anything she didn’t want. “Hey, I like that necklace you’re wearing,” he says, twirling the charm around in his fingers. “The heart is perfect for Valentine’s Day.”
She reaches up and takes his hand in hers. “Thanks. My sister got it for me a few years ago for my birthday,” she lies. She couldn’t tell him that Tyson had gotten it for her for Valentine’s Day.

Entertainment Spotlight: Brooke Lewis Bellas
Brooke Lewis Bellas can currently be seen in the film The Mourning. She also brought her talent to the role of Pam Deluca in the comedy ½ New Year, about a tight-knit group of friends letting loose at their annual Half New Year Party. Brooke is a veteran of the horror genre and is returning to those roots with a role in the upcoming zombie film set in 1950’s Hollywood, The Day of The Living Dead. Her other film credits include the critically-acclaimed films Psycho Therapy, iMurders, and Sinatra Club, opposite Danny Nucci. Brooke’s TV credits include Fox’s Quintuplets. She will next be seen in the steaming series Red Rooms, which she also produced. Alongside her acting work, Brooke is a life coach and author of Coaching From A Professed Hot Mess, is a Celebrity Ambassador for the Breaking The Chains Foundation, participates in LA Mission Feed The Homeless, and is a staunch LGBTQ and AIDS Activist.
You have worked extensively in the horror genre—what is it that draws you to that particular genre?
I have always embraced my inner detective and have loved solving mysteries. No wonder I have been a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock and Brian De Palma most of my life! I was also obsessed with vampires as a young girl and loved the ‘80s horror films when I was growing up. I have always been drawn to the darkness, unknown, mystery and escapism that horror offers. I also love how the horror genre embraces women of all body types (and curves) and offers strong roles for women!
If you could, is there anything that you would want to change about the horror genre?
If I could change anything about the horror genre, it would be the mainstream and public perception. Horror is often perceived as B-movie quality, evil, cultish, or less respectful than comedy or other genres, and that can be a false perception. There are many mainstream movies that we have all loved throughout the history of cinema and these are the type of horror genre films that I grew up watching. I have never been a fan of gratuitous horror and I could reference my favorites, from Alfred Hitchcock to Agatha Christie to Stephen King to Brian De Palma to the current thrillers and mainstream entertainment brought to us by Blumhouse or Jordan Peele, that are timeless. I wish people would understand how smart some of these screenplays are, the subtext of the stories being told. I wish the judgment and stigma of a lot of horror would be removed.
What would you say makes for a good scene partner?
I have been fortunate to act opposite some veteran greats and brilliantly talented actors, and I would, humbly, say that the most important components that make for a good scene partner are generosity, vulnerability, and openness—a partnership in which we listen and support each other. I have worked for over 20 years as an actress in this crazy industry, and there is little I have not experienced. I cannot say that working opposite the most “talented” or trained actors have necessarily been the best scene partner experiences for me. But working opposite generous actors who give and who support you, as you do for them, and you become like a well-oiled machine where the parts work better together...those actors who want you to succeed, who want to bring out the best in you, and you and them, a give and take—that is when movie magic is created!
1/2 New Year is a comedy, so can you tell us what drew you to the project? Can you tell us a little bit about the role of Pam?
½ New Year is an indie film with heart about a group of young people in their 20s who come to Hollywood, not necessarily for the entertainment industry but to live the life…live their best life…live their dreams…live that excitement that we all grow up seeing in movies, and yet, it is not always that simple. And, it is not always that glamorous or fun. We see how these relationships and people are glued together. I think the tagline sums it up best: "Friends are the family you get to choose." So, it is about a group of friends that go through the ups and downs of young life in Hollywood, and they learn that all you really have is love and friendship. I play Pam DeLuca, the big sister of Reed DeLuca (Drew McAnany). The film displays how sometimes we have family out here that is far away from our biological family, and it is what we go through, and the support we need to get from the worst of times to the best of times. It is very 80’s throwback and I think that's what I love so much about it. I met our star, writer, and producer, Drew McAnany, in Hollywood over ten years ago. Drew originally started out hosting in LA, and he was working at E! Entertainment when he interviewed me on the red carpet. He asked me about Philly, and we quickly bonded during that meeting, so he really became like a little brother to me. Like so many young actors in Hollywood, Drew was fighting to get a break for himself as an actor, so he created ½ New Year as a vehicle for himself to star in. He also wrote the role of his big sister, Pam DeLuca (from Philly), for me to act in. We had worked through a few years of table reads and different directors and producers, then Georgia Menides jumped on board, did the re-write on the script, then became the producer who made it happen. Along with producer Zach Block, they hired Tom Morash as our director to creatively guide this project.
I am honored and grateful to have had Pam DeLuca written specifically for me. I think that is something every actor and actress wants in their career. Pam is in her 30’s, and a bit older than her brother Reed and his friends. They are Italian from South Philly, so they argue, but are very close. Pam is part of the gang, but she is like the "mother hen" to them. Her journey is about protecting her brother and giving guiding advice to the girls they hang out with, including the gorgeous leads, played by Bo Youngblood, Shanley Caswell, and Rebecca Vinagro. She also likes to have flings with Reed's young, handsome buddies, including Marty (played by Jermain Alverez Martin). Pam is an on-screen example of what we go through in "Hollywood life”: She is single and all about her career, she loves to party and doesn't want to grow up! The film released in the USA on all TV On Demand and has just been released on Amazon Prime and Tubi TV.
What’s the funniest/weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on a film?
Oh, I have had many! I truly feel that being an actor and producer in the independent film world involves a whole other level of funny and weird experiences! When you do not have big budgets to deal with, you have to get creative in other ways. So, one funny story that I would love to share was my experience of being one of the producers on a film titled Sinatra Club, that I was fortunate to get to act in, opposite Danny Nucci from Titanic, Jason Gedrick from Iron Eagle, Ellen Hollman from Spartacus, Michael Nouri from Flashdance, and the list goes on and on, with an incredible cast of talent we assembled. And, what was so cool was I found the script in 2004, we filmed in 2009, and it was distributed in 2011, so it was a very long and challenging development period for an indie project, but one of the wildest memories I have was the fact that the story is based on a true story about the night John Gotti became John Gotti, so for all of the mobster history and movie buffs who are reading this, I was so fortunate to be a part of history in the making with this film. This film is based on Sal ‘Ubatz’ Polisi who went into the witness protection program for releasing information on John Gotti and his crew, and when he came out of the witness protection he wrote the story of his life in the Mafia. It was so wild to work on a project for so many years where we would literally meet at 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock, 12 o’clock at night in privacy and secrecy at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, California, in hotel suites and we would hold our production meetings there!
You actively support many varied causes, how did you get involved in activism?
I was born with a philanthropist's heart and have always been a supporter of giving back in whatever way we can. I was spearheading events in college to run around Philadelphia and feed the homeless with my sorority sisters. Now, I am so grateful to have whatever little “celebrity” status or recognition I have that can help make a difference. I feel blessed and responsible to give back through my artistic endeavors and through my work. I am a believer in activism and I typically work with numerous charities at a time. I am a celebrity ambassador for the Breaking the Chains Foundation that cultivates healing through art for those who have experienced eating disorders, self-esteem issues, and body image issues. I am active in charity work with the Los Angeles Mission on Skid Row and helping to feed the homeless. I have been active in several Breast Cancer charities and events, as I have lost people whom I loved to breast cancer over the years. I have also been active in quite a few charities and philanthropies to support AIDS research. I authored and have donated my book, titled Ms. Vampy’s Teen Tawk: There’s A Lotta Power In Ya Choices, to support teen girls. And, in giving back to the world, I find that it brings so much fulfillment and gratitude to my own heart.
What does your allyship mean to you?
My allyship means everything to me, both personally and professionally. My empathic heart has always been wired to help others. I do not perceive myself as a person with power or fame, but I am incredibly grateful that I have been afforded the opportunities throughout my career to give back, to take a stand, and to help those who have been marginalized in some way. I am a proud philanthropist and activist, and I feel it is my duty to serve. Throughout my life, I have often felt misunderstood or that I did not belong, and I have dealt with my own challenges and struggles, so I am known to “fight for the underdog” and support those in need.
You are a certified life coach, what’s the best advice you have ever received, and, in your opinion, the best advice you’ve ever given to somebody?
As an actress and life coach, I am a huge proponent of having a strong support system of professionals in my stable. I feel that all creatives and health professionals should have their own support system and professionals to turn to. At the end of the day, I have received such incredible advice from my professionals—my life coach of many years, Lori Bertazzon, and my actress empowerment coach, Michelle Colt. One of my favorite pieces of advice that Lori Bertazzon has given me occurred a few years back when she supported me in creating my own set of personal commandments at the beginning of the year. These are commandments that I consistently refer back to, that help to empower me and help to create breakthroughs when I am having breakdowns in my life or career. Michelle Colt has also given me unbelievable advice and support in her workshops to strengthen my soul as an actress, and I have to reference a recent funny one because I love it so, and she knows me so well: our mantra, “No more shenanigans!”. It is something that I hold near and dear to my heart daily.
Humbly, I think the best advice I have given over the years was born from my Ms. Vampy web series for teen girls, where I created a catchphrase that I cherish: “When faced with fear, dig deep inside, find your inner Vamp, and… Vamp It Out!”. To this day, my now-adult cast will send me messages that they used this catchphrase. I use it as an adult (you do not have to be a teenage girl to appreciate it) and when I am fearful or trying to have a breakthrough, I dig deep inside and I Vamp It Out! My other favorite catchphrase advice was so powerful for me, I actually named my life coaching business after it: “Be You… And, Be Fearless!”
Has your training as a life coach ever helped you to prepare for a role/project? How?
I really love this question, because one may think that different careers or skill sets cannot help the other, but I have found that my training as a board-certified life coach has helped me tremendously to prepare for a role or project in a few ways. First, I am now very mindful and aware of the “mind chatter” and I am more able to catch myself in it. When I enter a space of fear or anxiety, I am able to coach myself off the ledge. Even more compelling, is that when I went to school at the Life Purpose Institute to become a board-certified life coach, I learned early on that a very important component of life coaching is “listening without an agenda”. This has helped me exponentially as an actress, because when you are acting and you're truly in the moment, you need to be listening without an agenda, as well. A true response should come from your instincts and that is so wild to me because now I am able to catch myself when I am preparing for a project and I am anticipating what the character will say to me next, and I can catch myself listening with an agenda of what they will say, and I know that I'm not in the moment as an actress.
How can mental well-being and self-care help to sustain activism/advocacy/allyship?
I cannot stress enough how strongly I believe that mental well-being and self-care can help to sustain activism/advocacy/allyship and our own personal strength—mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I actually speak about this in my book Coaching From A Professed Hot Mess: “When you give to yourself and allow yourself to replenish, you have so much more to give to others and will feel so much stronger inside.” I am still working on this, diligently, but when we learn to take care of ourselves and focus on our mental, spiritual, and emotional strength, we understand what it means to feel and give from our hearts. We become inspired to give back and to support people, causes, and have a passion, purpose, and mission, outside of ourselves.
What can you tell us about your latest projects The Second Age of Aquarius, Stripped, The Mourning, and Red Rooms?
At a time when the world is upside down and we do not really know where our next jobs will come from, I feel very blessed that I had acted in, and produced, a few projects that wrapped prior to COVID-19. My Psycho Therapy (Amazon Prime) film director, Staci Layne Wilson, wrote a film with Darren Gordon Smith (Repo! The Genetic Opera). Those two are so crazy talented. It is a fun indie gem. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but it’s The Second Age of Aquarius. It is a comedy, with a little bit of a Sci-Fi twist and a lot of music. It’s really sweet and clever. I’m an Executive Producer and I act in it. I play Tawny Stevens. She’s a young mom, stuck in the eighties, as an eighties, New Jersey, rocker mom. Wait until you see my hair, my make-up, and my leopard pants. I did the Jersey accent. I can’t wait for the film to come out! We also wrapped a TV pilot Stripped. It is a Comedy/Drama. It is a TV pilot that was written and directed by Marc Clebanoff, who also directed the film The Mourning, which stars Michael Walton, Louis Mandylor, Dominique Swain, and Larry Hankin. I was both an actress and a co-producer. The Mourning is a cool Sci-Fi/Love Story that just released on the new Tubi TV streaming channel. Stripped was a passion project. I was also one of the producers with Marc and Frank Krueger (also stars in it). I played Jules, the publicist to the star, Chris Cameron, played by Casper Van Dien. It was created by Mark Clebanoff and late actor, Kristoff St. John. They had created the concept before he passed on, which is such a sad situation, but Marc wanted to carry on his legacy, and he did, and we did. It is such an incredible cast, and series, we are all proud of. Lastly, at the start of COVID-19, my creative instinct kicked in and I knew I had to create to stay somewhat “sane”, so I spent most of the quarantine producing and filming a virtual streaming series. Red Rooms was conceived and completed out of “isolation inspiration”! Joshua Butler and I had been in development on a project and had been reminiscing about our favorite industry days of yesteryear when we met on the horror film circuit. I had already been a superfan of Joshua’s work for years. In 2019, we shot a proof of concept for our project, which paid homage to his hugely successful film VLOG (2008) from the producers of SAW, which went on to become a hit TV series. When COVID-19 hit Hollywood and we were all in isolation, I called for a production meeting, then suggested we use the footage we shot and attempt to experiment by filming each character virtually from their homes. Red Rooms stars horror film and TV veterans Brooke Lewis Bellas (iMurders), David Alpay (The Vampire Diaries), Suze Lanier-Bramlett (The Hills Have Eyes), Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare), and Noah Blake (Teen Witch). We are currently working on post-production and cannot wait to see where we end up!
Thanks for taking the time, Brooke!

Full Line-up Announced for 2018 Overlook Film Festival – April 19-22, New Orleans
The Overlook Film Festival has just dropped an incredible line-up of horror and genre films, interactive exhibits and panels for the 2018 event. Happening April 19th-22nd, genre audiences will descend upon the Bourbon Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, for premiere screenings of Hereditary, Unfriended: Dark Web, St. Agatha, Ghost Stories, among many others.
We attended to the 2017 Overlook Film Fest atop Mount Hood at the infamous Timberline Lodge (exterior setting of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining) and it was our favorite festival experience of the year. From the second you enter the fest, you step into a world of film, interactive horror, and sensory experiences. We had such a good time, we’ve already booked ourselves in for 2018’s events. And now that they’ve announced the line-up, I can hardly wait..
From the Press Release
(NEW ORLEANS, LA) – The Overlook Film Festival is proud to announce its second year programming lineup. In addition to the 40 films (23 features and 17 short films from 12 countries) on offer, the festival will feature exciting parties, virtual reality, interactive events, and live performances – all taking place in America’s most haunted city: New Orleans, Louisiana.
On opening night of the festival, audience members will enjoy the chiller Unfriended: Dark Web (United States, 2018), from Blumhouse Productions and Bazelevs Productions, directed by Stephen Susco, and starring Colin Woodell, Betty Gabriel, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Andrew Lees, Connor del Rio, Stephanie Nogueras, and Savira Windyani.
The Overlook Film Festival will screen A24’s highly anticipated Hereditary (United States, 2018) as its closing feature presentation, directed by Ari Aster, and starring Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne.
The Centerpiece of the 2018 edition of The Overlook Film Festival is St. Agatha, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, which will hold its world premiere in New Orleans at the festival.
The festival’s Visionary Award will be presented to modern genre favorite Leigh Whannell, best known for writing the first three films in the Saw franchise, as well as Insidious, and Insidious: Chapter 2, and directing Insidious: Chapter 3. Whannell is an Australian screenwriter, producer, director, and actor who will celebrate his latest directorial effort at the festival, Upgrade. The Visionary Award was established to honor a contemporary horror figure or company elevating the genre, while fostering the community by providing opportunities for new talent to thrive.
Hereditary
In addition to the films and special guests, the Overlook Film Festival will be generously packed with live presentations. The festival’s virtual reality program will feature the world premiere of noted experience creator Jon Braver’s Delusion: Lies Within, a fully immersive, 360 degree episodic narrative from Skybound Entertainment.
Other experiences will run the gamut from live podcasts and storytelling shows, to immersive attractions for an audience of one – including the world premiere of a new show from immersive theater troupe BLACKOUT – and The Overlook Immersive Game, a new alternate reality game that will span the entirety of the festival created by this year’s experience designers Scott Gillies and Nick Tierce, whose credits include a range of interactive projects for companies that include Electronic Arts, Disney, Microsoft, Niantic Labs and Google.
The Overlook Film Festival is programmed by festival co-directors Michael Lerman and Landon Zakheim, and programmer Lili Rodriguez. The schedule, sponsors, and additional surprises will be announced in the coming days.
“We’re so excited to unleash this program onto our devoted audience and new fans in this haunted city” said festival co-director Michael Lerman.
“It’s such a great year for horror and the varied nature of this program is really a testament to innovative ways filmmakers are finding to frighten, challenge and celebrate the genre.”
Added co-director Landon Zakheim: “We’ve assembled a wonderfully sordid array of some of our favorite storytellers, performers, and immersive artists to create the signature events and shows that round out our weekend-long summer camp. We can’t wait to share the secrets, surprises, and ghosts of New Orleans with all of you.”

Populated with fairy tale imagery, TIGERS is at turns harshly real and terrifyingly surreal, reminiscent of films like THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE and CITY OF GOD as it details a tragic and engulfing nightmare.

Derby Analysis and Picks
My favorite Derby moment of all time came a few years back when my wife and I watched the big race at The Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City. My detailed analysis and selections were trashed by a race that found a longshot winner and even longer shots hitting the board in the Exotic wagers. As we watched the winning ticket prices flash onto the big screen, a random guy standing next to me leans over with his ticket in hand and asks me, “Did I win?” It was a Superfecta ticket with all the right numbers in place. I turned to the screen to verify. Turned back to the ticket. Now wide-eyed, turned back to the screen to re-verify, then back to the curious man holding a winning Superfecta ticket. I inform, “Dude, you just won a lot of money.” “Really?” he asks, “How much?” I inform, “$30,000.” He almost fainted. Upon his revival I had to inquire... “Excuse me, but I have to ask, I have been handicapping horse races my entire life. I spent hours reviewing this race. I can’t imagine anyone picking the four horses you picked in the exact correct order. What system did you use to select these horses in this race?” He responded... “I bet the date of my Grandson’s birthday. He was born last week.”
That, my friends, defines handicapping the Kentucky Derby. This is an almost impossible race to handicap for many reasons. Traditional handicapping rules don’t really apply because none of the 20 horses in the Derby have ever run under similar conditions. Two most important: 1. No horse has been in a race against 19 others with 150,000 people screaming from call to the post to finish; and 2. No horse has yet to run the long distance of 1 1/4 miles. Without a sample size of those conditions, it is impossible to know how any horse will respond when so tested.
Thus, I tell friends, best to bet your favorite name, or number, or silk design or, yes, the date of your grandson’s birthday. Watching the race is just as fun and you could end up winning $30,000!
Okay, having said all that. I can’t help but to do what fans of the game like to do... handicap the Kentucky Derby. Because before the race, you can sound like a genus, and then upon loss, use all the excuses necessary to explain why the selection would have won, but for...
So here goes.
In handicapping the Derby I use a combination of analytics, pedigree and past performances. I try to predict how the race will be run by each of the horses against the others in the field and settle on a predicted pace of the race to determine which horses will have the best chance to win and/or finish in the money. I try to determine if there is a super-horse in the field (aka Justify or American Pharoah). I try to avoid heavy favorites and look for a few longshots to complete my Exotic bets, such as exactas, trifectas and superfectas. .
There are a couple of preliminary factors to consider in analyzing this race... 1. Upon review of the 20-horse field and their past performances, I do not see the early pace of the race to be extraordinarily fast. That is an important factor as we begin the handicapping process. There are a few horses which like to run in front, perhaps hoping to wire the field, as explained below, but unlike past Derbys, there is not a group of super-fast frontrunners that will contest each other for the early lead, setting blazing early fractions and , in turn burning each other out, giving a better chance to the stretch-runners; 2. The favorite Omaha Beach being scratched allows for a race that is wide open. An argument can be made for almost all of the entrees to win. Thus, back to the grandson’s birthday!
Here are my comments on the field:
1. WAR OF WILL 15-1
No horse since 1986 has won the Derby from the #1 post position. This colt won three races in a row once current jockey Tyler Gaffalione got the mounts, including two G2 stake races (by comparison, the Derby is G1). He had a bad start in his last race in which he was the favorite, so I discount that race from consideration. Bred to like the distance, especially on the dam side. Likes to run just off the led and take over around the final turn. Could duplicate that effort here, especially without a fast pace and if he gets out of the gate well. My concern is his past speed ratings have not measured up to some others in the field and he has not tested against the top level of horses as he will find here.
2. TAX 20-1
Started his career as a maiden claimer at Churchill Downs and was claimed for $50K last October. Great buy ‘cause he has won $300K since. Since that claim the new ownership group under trainer Danny Gargan has run competitively in three stake races (G2 and G3), winning the G3 Withers against mediocre competition. Lost to TACITUS by a length last time out. His speed ratings have been consistently outstanding. Similar to 1-WAR OF WILL, likes to run close to the lead. Another horse that can stay close till the end as his breeding suggests he can handle the distance.
3. BY MY STANDARDS 15-1
Here’s a horse that would not have qualified to run in the Derby except for an unexpected longshot victory in the Louisiana Derby at 23-1, fresh off a maiden special weights win. He improved his average speed rating that day by more than 10% and took advantage of favorite 1-WAR OF WILL’s flub in that race out of the gate. His breeding says this race is too long, especially on the dam side. Likes to run mid-pack and kick it higher gear down the stretch. Another upset at this long distance? I am not convinced.
4. GRAY MAGICIAN 50-1
This horse probably should not have qualified for the Derby. Similar to 3-BY MY STANDARDS, gets in because of a decent finish in recent stakes race. Here, in Dubai against a relatively week field. Interesting, because he likes to run in front and, if I was his trainer, I would let it fly and see what happens. I suspect he collapses down the stretch because of lack of talent and pedigree.
5. IMPROBABLE 5-1
One of three outstanding horses trained by super-trainer Bob Baffert seeking his 6th Derby victory. This one may end up as the race time favorite. And for good reason. A $200K yearling purchase, he won his first three starts as a two-year old with higher speed ratings each time out, including a G1 win in December. Looked like a super-horse wannabe at two years old. Not so much at three. His two starts in 2019 came with second place finishes in a G2 and G1 race, the last race losing to Omaha Beach in the G1 Arkansas Derby in the slop. Interesting, change of jockeys to Irad Ortiz and now removing blinkers after trying them last race. My concern about this favorite is his second place finish to 18-LONG RANGE TODDY. Had the lead that day, and let the longshot slip past. Breeding on sire side is suspect, although breeding on dam side says he can handle the distance. I do like his final running quarters in last two races, despite second place finishes. Have to keep him in the mix because of Baffert + he is always there at that end.
6. VEKOMA 15-1
While this horse has won three of four races (G2 and G3), I sense there was a favorable track bias in each which helped. Credit trainer George Weaver for race placement. Has good past speed ratings and has one of the best all time jockeys, Javier Castellano. He will be at or near the lead from the onset. His pedigree is not built for this distance, so my concern is that while he will be competitive from the start, he will not have the energy to finish the job with the threat he falls out of the money completely.
7. MAXIMUM SECURITY 8-1
So compelling at many levels. First, he is undefeated winning 4 for 4, including the G1 Florida Derby, defeating handily competitors 20-BODEXPRESS and 10-CUTTING HUMOR. Trained by local trainer Jason Servis (brother of Smarty Jones trainer John Servis). Likes to run in front from the get-go and will undoubtedly try to win the race wire to wire. Can he? I am betting against it. Great story because this horse actually started his career as a two-year old in a $16,000 maiden claimer (where was I on that day??) and has since won $600K. Can a racehorse go from $16K claimer to Kentucky Derby winner? In my dreams, yes. But hard pressed to believe that will happen here especially with suspect distance breeding on his sire side.
8. TACITUS 8-1
I love horses bred from the champion sire Tapit. They are big and strong and built for the hustle and bustle of the 20-horse Derby field. This one is trained by the terrific Bill Mott (although 0-8 in prior Derbys) and ridden by exceptional jockey Jose Ortiz. Four prior races, three wins, including a terrific win in the G2 Wood Memorial, over 2-TAX and 11-HAIKAL. His speed rating that day is the highest of any others. Likes to run mid-pack and in past races has shown the ability to kick it up down the stretch. Seems to be perfectly situated to run a big race.
9. PLUS QUE PARFAIT 30-1
Jackpot for this horse in Dubai. An also ran in prior G2 and G3 stakes (finished 13th and 6th respectively against 1-WAR OF WILL), he won the $2.5 Million Dubai race against mediocre competition (see 4-GRAY MAGICIAN). Seems overmatched against these horses on U.S. soil.
10. CUTTING HUMOR 30-1
One of two horses in this race trained by Hall of Fame trainer and two-time Derby winner Todd Pletcher. This one was a $400K yearling purchase, so great anticipation early on. However, as racing unfolded, it was clear that this colt was not Pletcher’s best, by any stretch. In fact his regular jockey John Velasquez has decided to ride another horse 13-CODE OF HONOR. Perhaps for good reason. This Pletcher horse won a G3, but speed ratings are not extremely impressive. Distance breeding on sire side is suspect. Likes to run mid-pack and has had some good late kick speed down the stretch. May squeeze in for Exotics, passing tiring horses toward the finish.
11. HAIKAL 30-1
Another colt who has some late kick, but past history that makes him suspect as having the ability to win the race. He was four lengths back of 8-TACITUS in the Wood Memorial G2, although he made up 10 lengths from his slow start at the first quarter and, arguably, made up that distance because of a blistering early pace in that race. That was this horse’s first and only start at a distance in excess of a mile. Distance breeding is fair. Again, may pass tiring horses down the stretch if he has the stamina to survive 1 1/4 miles.
12. OMAHA BEACH SCRATCHED
13. CODE OF HONOR 12-1
If only this horse had better speed ratings in prior races, he would be a longshot special. Hall of Fame connections of trainer Shug McGaughey and jockey John Velasquez make this horse attractive for that reason alone. Noting that Velasquez chose to ride this horse in favor any of the Pletcher trained horses makes it even more intriguing. Just that his past races don’t give much optimism that he can beat this field of top line runners. His running style is to come from behind. Concern is that he will dig too deep a hole and not have that special talent needed to storm to victory down the stretch. But if any pair can work that magic it would be McGaughey and Velasquez.
14. WIN WIN WIN 12-1
Another who likes to run off the pace and kick it in down the stretch. Much like his neighbor 13-CODE OF HONOR, has not demonstrated the talent to compete for victory with the upper echelon in this race. Finished second to 6-VEKOMA by three lengths in the G2 Blue Grass stakes. Finished third to 8-TACITUS in the G2 Tampa Derby. My greatest concern, is that in these last two races, the only two he has run at a distance in excess of a mile, his final quarter times were not impressive. Also, his regular jockey, Jose Ortiz, has decided to ride 8-TACITUS.
15. MASTER FENCER 50-1
Bred, born and raced in Japan. First ever Japanese horse in Derby. Making a 13,000 mile trip for this race. Difficult circumstances for any horse. This one shows some talent in Japan, but not eye-popping.
16. GAME WINNER 9-2
With the scratch of Omaha Beach, this Baffert-trained colt now stands as the Derby favorite. For good reason. Hall of Fame connections of Baffert and jockey Joel Rosario. Broodmare sire of A.P. Indy suggests pedigree stamina to handle the long distance. He was the two-year old champion horse of the year in 2018, having won all four of his races, including the biggest prize, the G1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Classic. If he wins the Derby, he will be only the third horse in 34 years to win the Juvenile Classic and Derby. Still he entered 2019 as the odds-on Derby favorite. But things haven’t been as smooth this year. Two 2019 races, both times going off as the 1-2 favorite to win, two second place finishes. Buzz kill! He finished second to Omaha Beach, missing by a nose in the G2 Rebel Stakes. No shame there. Then most recently, finished second to the (also) Baffert trained 17-ROADSTER in the G1 Santa Anita Derby. He actually beat 17-ROADSTER in 2018 by two lengths. But not this day. In the Santa Anita Derby, 16-GAME WINNER actually took the lead down the stretch only to get passed by the eventual winner. I remember last year’s Triple Crown winner Justify clocking the field in the Santa Anita Derby as a prep for his Kentucky Derby win. That sticks with me because I want my Derby win pick to be sharp and ready for the Derby run and I’m not getting that 100% with this favorite. So, third time a charm or just not as good as 2018? Not sure. He certainly has not captured the high speed rating he left off with as a two-year old. Love him, but hesitating.
17. ROADSTER 5-1
Third of three Baffert-trained horses. This one was a whopping $575K yearling purchase. He was not disappointed his buyers winning three of four races, including the G1 Santa Anita Derby. His only loss came last December when he went off as the favorite in a G1 race and lost to 16-GAME WINNER (see above). Not sure if this horse is getting better (had throat surgery after the December race) or if his stablemate is not, but the tide seems to have turned in his favor. Here’s a knock... no horse from the 17 post position has ever won the Derby, 0-40. Also, his regular jockey, Mike Smith, chose to ride Omaha Beach, when that horse was still in the race. Is that telling? Expect a strong race with the possibility that this horse is peaking at the right time. Hard to dismiss any Baffert-trained horse on any day.
18. LONG RANGE TODDY 30-1
Has not shown good form, finishing a distant 6th in his last race, G1 Arkansas Derby, drubbed by the likes of Omaha Beach, 5-IMPROBABLE and 20-COUNTRY HOUSE. Pulled off an upset in the G2 Rebel defeating 5-IMPROBABLE. Hard to explain that sudden burst of speed, but that unlikely victory made him eligible to run here. So, why not. 18th post position will be difficult to overcome in this field of seemingly better horses.
19. SPINOFF 30-1
Trainer Pletcher’s second horse in the race. Similar to his other 10-CUTTING HUMOR, jockey John Velasquez chose not to ride this horse as usual in favor of 13-CODE OF HONOR. This horse has improved in each of his four prior races and his speed rating in the last race, the G2 Louisiana Derby matches with the best. He finished second in that race to 3-BY MY STANDARDS. But this will be a very different race for this colt who likes to run with the leaders. Very difficult for a horse to pop in front from the 19th post position and maintain that effort for 1 1/4 miles.
20. COUNTRY HOUSE 30-1
Here is a pure closer who has on occasion shown the ability to fly down the stretch. Unfortunately, that usually occurs against mediocre company and in races that are very slow in pace. This race promises to have a slower than usual Derby pace, but still faster than most races. So, not expecting that condition to elevate this horse, especially starting the race in a far outside post. At best, I can see this horse sneaking in for some backend Exotics.
21. BODEXPRESS 30-1
Last, and perhaps least, is this colt who has the honor of starting from the most outside post in the auxiliary gate. This horse gets in because Omaha Beach scratched. He has never won a race and somehow finished second in the G1 Florida Derby at 72-1. That finish qualified him for the Derby, notwithstanding his winless status. If a winless horse starting from the 20th post position somehow wins the Kentucky Derby, all handicapping is worthless.
________________________________________________________________
Here is how I see the race unfold:
AND THEY’RE OFF... Rushing to the lead is 1-WAR OF WILL in order to clear trouble of being squeezed along the rail. Followed quickly by 7-MAXIMUM SECURITY who may quickly vie for the lead heading into the first turn. Also there should be 4-GRAY MAGICIAN who may seek to pull ahead early in a “Hail Mary” attempt to wire the field. Struggling to inch into the top group will be outside post-position contenders 19-SPINOFF and 21-BODEXPRESS.
Tracking the leaders around the first turn and into the backstretch should be 2-TAX, 6-VEKOMA, 16-GAME WINNER, 17-ROADSTER, 18-LONG RANGE TODDY. The positioning of 16 and 17 is important and may impact the entire outcome. Meaning that if either horse gets checked behind a mountain of horses, they may have difficulty catching up down the stretch.
Saving ground behind should be 3-BY MY STANDARDS, 5-IMPROBABLE, 8-TACTIUS and 10-CUTTING HUMOR.
Trailing the field around the backstretch should be 9-PLUS QUE PARFAIT, 11-HAIKAL, 13-CODE OF HONOR, 14-WIN WIN WIN and 20-COUNTRY HOUSE. Not sure how the Japanese horse 15-MASTER FENCER will decide to run this race.
The race takes shape at the top of the stretch. 1-WAR OF WILL hangs tough. 7-MAXIMUM SECURITY begins to give way. 19-SPINOFF struggles to maintain position. 4-GRAY MAGICIAN and 21-BODEXPRESS fade to obscurity. 2-TAX, 16-GAME WINNER, 17-ROADSTER make their move. Here comes 5-IMPROBABLE and 8-TACITUS. 6-VEKOMA still holds strong, but being inched out by others coming. 3-BY MY STANDARDS, 10-CUTTING HUMOR and 18-LONG RANGE TODDY can’t keep pace. From the early trailers, 11-HAIKAL, 13-CODE OF HONOR, 20-COUNTRY HOUSE pick up ground.
AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME...
1-WAR OF WILL, 2-TAX, 6-VEKOMA and 7-MAXIMUM SECURITY give way. Too much to sustain in the lead with this field of outstanding horses charging ahead. Maybe one or more holds to land in the Exotics. Castellano on 6-VEKOMA has the best chance to find that perfect ride to finish above expectations.
In the mix should be the Baffert trio, 5-IMPROBABLE, 16-GAME WINNER and 17-ROADSTER, along with the late comers, 13-CODE OF HONOR, 14-WIN WIN WIN and 20-COUNTRY HOUSE, but they don’t have the talent to get past the hard-charging and winner... 8-TACITUS.

Chapter 19: ..? — Surprises!
Finally updated, finally found the time to update— THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE YESTERDAY!! AAAAAAAA—
— — — — — — — — —
Danny was with his 'Older brother' Dan and Damian for the day to play with friends and hide out in Hood's territory/turf, Damian only decided to tag along since he didn't have school and he was still wary of maybe just maybe another kidnapper who wants to take Danny away and hurt him. Damian occasionally looked up from his phone and observed their surroundings before going back to scrolling in his phone as he assured himself that there were no nearby threats, Danny was playing tag with the other kids and everyone being rough with each other.
Ellie was sitting by Damian's side and watching as he scrolled through Twitter and bickered with his friends in his private account. "What are you doing?" Ellie asks with her tiny voice, "Arguing." Damian bluntly said as he typed hard as if tho his life depended on it. "Keyboard Warrior..." Ellie stared at him and Damian stopped typing for a brief moment and looked at Ellie.
"And I wear that certificate and badge with Honor." Damian huffed and slightly raises his chin before typing away once again, this time faster and much harder on the screen, "You're gonna break your phone—" Ellie just raises her palm slightly and Damian scoffed, "As if." Damian kept typing and the screen cracked. "I take back my words." Damian stared at his cracked screen, "Control your strength idiot—" Ellie stuck out her tounge.
Damian sets aside his phone in his pocket and walked over to Danny who was looking at an alley, "Daniel—" Danny suddenly ran in the alley, "Hey! Danny! Where are you going!" Damian immediately ran after the younger boy through the alley, "Dear God why is he fast—" Damian huffed as he ran after the bolting Danny. Damian almost tripped as the boy suddenly turned right and Damian held himself upright by grabbing onto the Alley Wall, "Danny!" Damian yelled out.
Damian saw Danny Sit on the floor and gently taking something from the ground. "Dami... Bird..." Danny looked over his shoulder to Damian, his eyes flashing a Lazarus Green yet his Expression blunt and straight. "Bird?" Damian repeated as he walked over to Danny, "Injured Bird... I saw it fly down when it got hit by something..." Danny just muttered and held up the injured 'hawk' that's settling on his arms with a 'broken' wing.
"Oh my.. let's go home to Manor, I have supplies there." Damian immediately took action and Danny nodded as he held the hawk close to his chest, "Will Bruce let me keep it?" Danny asked as he followed Damian out of the alleyway, "Considering your current place in his heart then probably allow you without hesitation." Damian chuckled. Damian called Dan over since Jason was out for the day.
"Dante, do me and Daniel here a favor and take us to the Manor." Damian said and Dante looked at him for a moment before smiling and nodding, "Sure Kiddo." Dante turned off the stove and took off his apron before taking his keys by the door and leading the two children back outside, "What's with the Bird?" Dante finally asks, eyeing the hawk in Danny's arms, clearly comfortable and snuggling in gently.
"Found!" Danny just says with a happy delighted tone and a small chirp, Pause—Freeze—Record fucking scratch— "You can chirp?" Damian backtracked at what he heard from Danny's mouth, "hmm..." Danny chirped again, Damian just stared at him with disbelief— possible questioning?? What? They've known him for quite a while and this is the first time he finds out the kid can CHIRP?!
"I mean I can too." Dante also chirped, this one a larger much intimidating sounding one whilst Danny's sounded like a baby chick, the Bird-Hawk chirped back and Danny kept chirping with the Bird in unison. "Oh my god I have to tell Richard." Damian just laughed in still disbelief as he watched— heard Danny and Dante chirping with the injured bird, Danny got in the car with Dante in the Driver's seat as always.
"Ellie! Bite Kidnappers." Dante just finger guns the feral child and she smiled grimly with a subtle nod, she laughed to herself as Dante drove away, "Now I fully understand why she's allowed to be left alone.." Damian utters as he watched Ellie laugh maniacally, almost intimidatingly and unexpectedly cute at the same time.
Ellie as he's observed was quite.... Small and Fragile, but now that he knows them more it's evident that the small child that is Ellie can cause more damage than Danny himself as Danny was more reserved and anxious as to Ellie is the complete polar opposite of her 'Brother—Cousin—Esque' Clone Template. "Ofcourse, she can handle herself and she got her Dad with her even if we don't see him, favoritism totally." Dante scoffed as he drove out of downtown and slowly soon nearing the Wayne Manor as they entered the outskirts of Gotham.
"I still hate this long ass driveway." Dante scoffed and Damian stared at him Judgingly, "It's a pretty decent sized driveway mind you." Damian sneered and Dante rolled his eyes with a laugh, "Rich people talk." Dante scoffed as Damian and Danny got off the car. Dante was driving away once again to go somewhere, Danny was heading inside with a hum, the Hawk still in his arms just snuggled fit.
Damian following the little boy, "Alfreeed?" Danny called out and heading down the halls and soon after finding Alfred who was quite startled by Danny's mentally adopted Hawk. "Oh my! Master Danny, how may I help you?" Alfred greeted the boy and lowered his body to the boy's height and Danny held up the Hawk, "Please help me with patching her wing up." Danny smiled and Alfred nodded.
"Danny ran after it as it fell down in an alley, he was fast—" Damian just clarified, trying to indirectly say it's not him that found the hawk and wanted to adopt it. Alfred nodded and leading the boys in the kitchen to get the much animal friendly medical kit he has in store Incase Damian brings home another set of pets which is totally normal and common in this household apparently.
Danny chirped and the hawk chirped back and both Damian and Alfred nearly jumped at Danny's sudden chirping. Alfred stared for a moment before chuckling softly and bandaging the calm bird's wing and leg. "I need to tell Richard about this." Damian smiled very excited to show off Danny's chirps. Damian was always the first to know, he was the first to find out Danny could purr, that he could make things glow, and now he's the first to find out he can chirp like a chick.
"Danny I'm your favorite brother right?" Damian sat beside Danny and Danny stared at him for a moment. "Yep!" Danny smiled brightly, maybe Damian should invest in sunglasses just because of this occasional bright smile— Damian just leaned back to the chair and sighed, Danny kept chirping and 'conversing' with the Bird as Alfred went to make them sandwiches as snacks.
"Dami— why is there chirping in the kitchen—" Tim entered the kitchen in curiosity of 'chirping' and his eyes landed on The hawk and Danny who was chirping back at It, "What the fu—" Tim was interrupted by a look from Alfred, "Fuu—udge..." Tim slowly corrected himself, Damian also shot Tim a glare, "Watch your language drake." Damian sneered his gaze still sharp and deadly. If looks could kill Tim would already be 6 feet under.
"Dami did you bring that home or did you convince Danny to bring that home instead of you?" Tim raised an eyebrow as he sat a tad bit far from Damian and Danny, "Mind you, Danny brought the bird home because he found it injured." Damian corrected Tim with a huff and Danny nodding profusely. Danny chirped again which made Tim jump in his seat, "And I also found out he can chirp." Damian states and Tim stared at Danny.
"Oh my god... he's a bird— a robin—" Tim said with a smirk and Damian shot him a glare, "He is already phantom, he will not be a Robin...." Damian pulled Danny closer protectively. Danny tilts his head, "Admit it Dami, he's a birdie." Tim chuckled and Dick entered as he heard them somewhat bickering, "Who's a birdie?" Dick peeked his head and the three jumped not noticing his presence earlier. "What's with the hawk?" Dick asked and stared at the hawk in Danny's arms.
Danny chirped and Dick froze, "OH MY GOD! HE CAN CHIRP?? OMG —" Dick just started cooing over Danny, "Richard halt this embarrassing display of affection... You look like a crazy and stupid man." Damian scoffed and looked over to the side, "Oh come on now Dami... He can chirp—" Dick just hugged Danny and put the boy in his lap with the Bird also in Danny lap.
"Yes and that goes the same for Dante and most ghosts? Apparently." Damian shrugged as if stating the weather, "The BIG big guy can chirp? The guy bigger than Bruce?" Dick asked not believing Damian, "He demonstrated it to me, that's how I knew, said it's common in ghosts." Damian stated as he scrolled through his phone again and Tim just staring at the boy speculating.
"Do they have accents?" Tim asked and Damian stared at him for a few moments before finally speaking up, "I'm not quite sure... But I am sure that they have different tones, Danny's being more on the higher pitch and Dante's totally on the Low Pitches." Damian just motioned his hands as he spoke and Tim nodded. "Maybe Todd can chirp?" Tim speculated loudly, Dick and Damian stared at him for a moment also thinking that maybe he too can chirp like a little chick— "He can!" Danny interjected, "Dante and Him sometimes chirp at each other especially when Jason gets upset with Dan." Danny says casually as he preened the feathers of the hawk.
"And I never knew?!" Dick just exclaimed, disappointed at himself for not catching Jason chirping before, groaning to himself. "It's fair that we never caught Todd 'chirping' he is not at the Manor often and was only here to check up on Pennyworth." Damian shrugged nonchalantly, Soon Alfred placed a plate of sandwiches for them at the table before leaving to go do the rest of his daily routine. "Thank you Alfred!" Dick called out as Alfred left with a smile.
"Where's Dan anyways?" Tim suddenly asked, Damian and Danny shrugged, "I think he's going Ring—Shopping." Danny states and the three older Wayne's froze. "Ring shopping as in...?" Tim tried to get Danny to clarify but only earned him a smug smile for Danny. "Daniel please elaborate." Damian softly demanded and Danny laughed, "Proposals duh!" Danny laughed, and Dick stared at the boy in his lap in shock.
"WHAT—"
Elsewhere.....
Dan was in a jewelry shop in the Metropolis City(How fast did they get there?? No idea.) , "Vlad you know you're the only one who can help me here—" Dan just dragging his 'Father' with him to ask for help with ring shopping, "Atleast now we know his ring size." Vlad sighed and followed Dan to the display, "is it always supposed to be a diamond...?" Dan looked over his shoulder to Vlad who shook his head.
"Dante we are in the metropolis, you can do better than a measely diamond ring, pick something that'll speak to both your hearts." Vlad suggested as Dam looked over the rings, "... Maybe a Black Band for the ring...but the gem..." Dan speculated and tapped his finger on his chin.
"What color do you both resonate with? Something yo have in common, maybe something that you two first saw each other in—" Vlad was interrupted by an instant answer to his question, "Red." Dan's breathe Hitched in excitement, his core subtly buzzing(?) at the thought of Red Rings.
"If it is red, I don't suggest the more common Ruby... If we're talking THAT type of red... Red Spinel." Vlad suggested proudly and Dan nodded, "How do you know gems?" Dan asked Vlad after hearing his somewhat, slight expertise on gems(?) he supposes. "I buy Clockwork jewelry, I want to know what is more special. Either way all works for him. Especially the blues and reds." Vlad chuckled and Dan nods in understanding.
"That... That actually makes sense now as to why he's hoarding jewelry in his lair like some sort of obsessed dragon—" Dan just mutters and Vlad eyes him, "Hoarding? Like a dragon?" Vlad raised an eyebrow at that statement and Dan just nodded and shrugged as he commissioned(Rich People shit—) for a Red Spinel Ring that had a Black Band on [Jason's Finger Size].
Vlad was still trying to imagine Clockwork as a dragon with a hoard of... Jewelry and sparkly stuff Vlad buys clockwork— "That is quite a cute thought... Very odd and cute." Vlad nodded to himself. "Sometimes I still don't understand how you act..." Dan just stared at him in confusion as he watched Vlad sign the cheque to pay for the ring and them leaving the shop.
"Where is Clockwork anyways?" Dan asks and looks over at Vlad, "No Idea, But all I know is that he's competing for the Little Badger's love with Nocturn... And so far Nocturn has been on top." Vlad shrugs with a sigh, "Pretty sure his favorite person is Alfred Pennyworth— but okay. Go off I suppose." Dan laughed, and Vlad groaned. "They will not be happy... Ancients." Vlad pinches the bridge of his nose in tiredness.
"Wait when do you plan to propose to Jason?" Vlad crosses his legs as he hops on the passenger Seat and Dan on the driver's seat. "First Year Anniversary, I know it's still a bit too far and we've only been together for like what? 6 months? 4? 5? I forgot— I'll check my... Calendar later. But I am fully committed to him." Dan says and Vlad gave him a worrying gaze, "Yes, but the future will always be unpredictable Dante, one moment you're each other's lovers and the next you could be strangers that passed by each other."
Dan's breathe Hitched and his core buzzed uncomfortably, "I know that but I trust him, and myself... I just need to not mess it up or something... He... He's... He's everything for me now you know— like how you and clockwork became each other's obsessions—" Dan shrugged and Vlad nodded. "I understand Dante, but all I'm doing is for your betterment. I don't want you to get hurt." Vlad furrowed his brows with a worried look and Dan held his breathe for a moment before giving Vlad an understanding look.
"I understand.... I really do... Goddamit I'm glad you're not an asshole here unlike in my timeline." Dante Blurted out and both men looked at each other before laughing loudly, "I am also glad you don't see me as an asshole." Vlad slowly calmed his laughter and Dante was chuckling. Dan fixed his eyes back in the road but his mind slowly drifting back to his thoughts, 'What if I fuck it up? What if Jason leaves me? What it—' Dan's thoughts were interrupted by Vlad's soft pat to his back.
"I do not know what you're thinking but you should calm down Dante. It's not good for you to be so lost In thought whilst driving." Vlad reminded him and Dan just nods silently, turning up the radio's audio to let the music flow in the silence of the two. Dante pursed his lips and furrowed his brows lightly, 'Don't fuck up Dante. Just don't fuck up and no one gets hurt.' Dan reminds him as he breathed heavily.
'I can't fuck up...' Dan muttered under his heavy breathe, Because he really can't fuck up with Jason. He loves him too much that... That... He just can't fuck up.
Vlad just looked at Dante with a worried gaze, "You won't fuck up." Vlad just uttered which snapped Dante back to reality, "Right. I won't... I really won't..." Dan just mutters back as he drove faster and steadier so they could go back home faster.
'I won't fuck it up.' Dan thought to himself Finally as he relaxed the muscles on his body.

Part 9 - left its seeds while I was sleeping
“Hello darkness, my old friend. I’ve come to talk with you again. Because a vision softly creeping, left its seeds while I was sleeping. And the vision that was planted in my brain still remains within the sound of silence.” -The Sound of Silence by Disturbed
Masterlist Part 8
It was the lack of air in her lungs that woke Jazz up, gasping for air and fingers desperately trying to find a beating pulse at her neck.
With a sigh of relief, Jazz rested her palm against the beat, counting as it started to settle into a resting pace again.
Another nightmare.
Back in Danny’s memorial Jazz had converted from a maintenance access space, she had slept there one Christmas weekend as she learned her little brother would truly never have a peaceful afterlife. The darkness was an old friend, like a worn blanket from childhood that you would hide under because you believed the monsters wouldn’t get you then- embraced her as she was and sheltered her as she mourned her lost humanity and childhood until there were no more tears to cry.
Nonetheless, it couldn’t shelter her from the dreams of death, the echo of Danny’s death scream ghostly wail ricocheting in her skull like the worst sort of pinball game she could ever have the misfortune of playing.
It was no longer Danny’s death or theirs that haunted her with dogged determination, but Jason’s.
(The same man she found herself missing more with each passing day that she didn’t wake in his arms.)
It was horrifically detailed, the nightmares, because Jazz’s imagination painted with vivid color even in sleep. The details Lady Gotham had shared with her were few and far between, considering she didn’t care for talking about her favorite bird’s murder.
(Beaten, betrayed… waiting for his dad to reach him in time.)
(Only the darkness would ever know how much Jazz cried for a younger Jason, who only wanted his mother’s love, died for it.)
(It spoke to her own childhood, wanting her parents to love her and care for her.)
(What a pair they were.)
Jazz threw off her blankets and got dressed for the day, hair brushed back into a low ponytail and Bracelets hidden under loose sleeves and a glamor. The metal was cool against her warm skin, a comfortable weight on her forearms as she went about her morning in silence, forcing the nightmare back into a box for her never to think about.
Danny emerged only a few minutes after Jazz began making breakfast for them, yawning and raking a scarred hand through his messy hair as he tried to wake up. Her little brother was completely healed from his traumatic experience physically, but she worried about him mentally. Though he was much happier compared to when she first dragged him bleeding and screaming to Gotham, which could also be due to the fact that he has a new Haunt and isn’t vilified by the city as Phantom.
Even if it came at the cost of life, Danny loved being a vigilante.
The signs were there in the little things most of all.
The pride in his voice when he introduced himself as Phantom, delivered puns and witty one-liners with his wicked sense of humor for all to see, thrived in the sense of duty he wrought in Protecting others, even complete strangers. Danny was a hero, but he didn’t need that distinction to want to help, he only wanted to not be hunted for his spooky nature.
Jazz would shoulder that burden for him, take up another mantle if it meant giving Danny a chance to be happy with his existence. Ancients only knew how far she would go for him.
One slash, two, three
Blood is on your hands already.
Fourth, fifth slash
Ask the ghosts if honor matters, buried amongst the ash.
So what if Jazz had a bond with the darkness? So what if she woke up with no air in her lungs, searching for a pulse?
There was nothing else for her to fight for, no greater purpose she could find then to be at Danny’s side through the ups and downs. Jazz had already given up so much, both willingly and unknowingly, to take the crown, to be more than a presence on the sidelines- she was more than a Liminal, Jazz was the damn Regent.
(She ignored the grating reminder of the title being temporary.)
It was only until Jazz watched Danny walk through the door of his school, that it dawned on her what she was feeling….
Jazz was becoming depressed.
-——-———–
With the subtlety of Jack Fenton barreling through a wall, Jazz threw herself into work- both Vigilante and Regent- to ignore the realization and subsequent horror that she was falling into a deep depression.
And it was largely because of Danny.
Ancients, Jazz wanted nothing more than to confront these feelings head on, much like she encouraged her little brother too, but she couldn’t even find where to begin.
She supposed she could find someone to talk to about all this, in a professional manner, but her options were limited.
Spectra was the only ghost with counseling experience, but Jazz would only be leaving a conversation with her worse than when she began.
Frostbite would be of little help with something so human, considering he was an ancient ghost Yeti.
Human. That was it.
Jazz hadn’t considered a human psychiatrist, since most of her health needs thus far were physical and treated by the Yeti tribe, thanks to her ecto-contamination and proto-core.
What if she found a human doctor to see? Jazz had no reason to discuss anything ecto related, only human adjacent, so she could very well find one that suited her and her needs.
Well, that might be a challenge in Gotham.
The Watchtower was host to nearly every possible hero who were to attend Batman’s urgent briefing, many lingering around and questioning what the Bat could’ve had in store for so many of them to be present.
Robin, Red Hood, and Red Robin were counted among the numbers of those present, though only Red Robin had the fully depth of what they were about to be privy to, having been one of three people to sort through the Ghost Files (as they were dubbed by the Batkids).
Robin had demanded to be included, citing his prior experience with The Regent in Crime Alley as reason enough.
(He would not admit that he had been petrified by the vigilante, the death aura freezing him down to his bones.)
Red Hood was there at the request of his younger brother (Tim), Oracle and Batman, though he had yet to understand why.
“Red Robin, begin the presentation.” Batman ordered gruffly as he entered the large meeting hall, Superman and Wonder Woman at his heels, the other heroes trickling in soon after.
Red Robin nodded, took a deep breath and started the presentation slideshow.
Slide #1: Ghosts, Fenton Family, GIW, Anti-Ecto Acts, The Regent and the Phantom
Despite the absurdity of the first slide, no one felt like laughing. Especially when it is in a meeting with the Batman, the Dark Knight and two (?) of his children. Not to mention the existence of Deadman was well known to the Justice League.
“Bloody Hell, Bats, took you long enough.” Constantine had no qualms about poking the man in question with a metaphorical stick, but he had fully expected this briefing to happen a week ago.
“This briefing will be disclosing information granted to us by one of these Ghosts or Ecto-Entities as they are officially classified by the Ghost Investigation Ward or GIW. A serious breach of the Metahuman protection laws has been created and exploited by this government organization, which is responsible for drawing the Human world into the beginnings of an inter dimensional war with the Infinite Realms.” Batman spoke calmly, even if he was holding onto his demeanor by the skin of his teeth.
(He was livid.)
(A dead child had to beg him not to send him to war.)
(A dead child was a Spirit of Protection.)
As expected, the heroes present were disgusted by the actions of the GIW, the diabolical Anti-Ecto Acts passed during Luther’s term.
The worst reactions came during the Fenton Family portion.
The Ghost Files had included so much info on them, Red Robin had to shorten the list of what he would include in the presentation.
The first picture was of the members themselves, posing in front of a brick building with a neon sign of ‘Fentonworks’ glaring annoyingly from the background, casting an off shade of pale green over the subjects.
“The Fenton Family, manufacturers of the weapons sold to the GIW for the express purpose of hunting and capturing ghosts.” Batman began, “The two adults are Madeline and Jack Fenton, ecto-biologists whose prejudiced views on Ecto-Entites seem to be the founding behind the Acts and the GIW.”
The man in the photo was large, a sturdy frame encased in an orange hazmat suit and bearing a wide grin on his face, with an arm around his wife and children. Madeline Fenton was a slight woman, standing at a possible five foot eight and wearing a hazmat suit like her spouse.
The children were the next to be spoken of, “The boy is Daniel Fenton, the youngest, and according to the information given, he was killed in a lab accident at fourteen years old.”
The gasps of horror intermingled with the muttered curses before the Dark Knight silenced them, “Daniel’s older sister, Jasmine, was the primary caregiver for most of his life and after discovering her parents dissecting the town’s protector, a ghost by the name of Phantom, in the same basement lab Daniel died in, Jasmine allowed the Regent to claim their souls so the violence done to Phantom would be avenged.”
It had been quite the shock for Red Robin and Oracle to read that, both at the evidence of cruelty and inhumane experimentation done to a sentient being (a child who died and protected the town) and the admittance that the Regent killed the humans to avenge Phantom.
It wasn’t until Hood grimly smiled and said, “Good for them.” that something clicked.
Phantom was killed by the Fentons and avenged by the Regent of the Ghost King.
(Jason had never been avenged, not like this dead kid.)
There was one file, a video, that Tim refused to share with anyone.
The death of Daniel Fenton.
…and the rebirth.
Contrary to popular belief, Danny wasn’t an idiot. He was born into a bloodline of brilliance, even if such wasn’t always used for the greater good. He had spent years fixing his parents failed inventions, doing the proper equations to figure out how something could work when in reality it had no business existing.
(Designed to view a world unseen.)
He’d learned how to fly a jet and build one at fifteen out of sheer desperation, defeated the Ghost King in the same year…. And was almost killed fully by his parents.
His vivisection scars had healed fully, his removed ribs having regrown, and he could transform without echoes of agony in his chest.
(They had gotten far too close to his core.)
Point was, Danny knew there was something going on with his sister. She had been less talkative since their escape from Amity, but Jazz had been withdrawn since they took Jason to the Batcave. He had suspected that Jazz missed having someone to care for, considering that was the kind of person she’d been for as long as he could remember, but it didn’t seem quite right. There was something sadder in her eyes.
Danny turned his focus back down to what he was doing, shoving the concern down to deal with later when he sees Jazz. Usually English was one of the classes he could relax in, considering he could now actually read the assigned books without worrying about ghost attacks eating into his sleep, but today Danny couldn’t focus on the teacher or the lesson.
He’d had an idea for the ecto-comms, his own creation made from broken Fenton phones. His notebook, which was a mix of notes and half finished designs, was open to the original design of the comms. Danny had to account for Jazz’s helmet when he designed her set, but it was awkward at best to activate it when she needed to talk to him.
Jazz needed armor to protect her vital organs even if her skin was incredibly durable. He’d seen some idiot unload a clip into Jazz’s back, not a single one had pierced her- that had been when she’d intercepted a smuggling ring from inside and had yet to summon her armor or sword.
(The creepy head turn Jazz did to face the idiot was the stuff horror movies were made from.)
(Danny was oddly proud.)
No, the armor was to protect against ghosts. Ecto-blasts would severely injure Jazz despite her liminalality, unlike Danny who could just go intangible or manipulate the ectoplasm in his body around the blast.
“Did you hear about the Anti-Ecto Acts?” one of his classmates whispered from somewhere behind him, causing Danny to automatic tune his hearing into the conversation.
“Yeah, that stuff is sick. Phantom is a pretty cool dude, even if he’s dead.”
“He’s got puns for days, man.”
“But still, ghosts?”
“We got aliens, dude and you’re drawing the line at ghosts?”
“Ugh, fine.”
“Just read the whole article, man.”
“It’s the daily planet.”
“It’s Clark Kent and Lois Lane, dude, it’s worth the gag factor of metropolis.”
Danny’s pencil snapped in uneven halves in his grip, confusing mix of emotions swirling in his chest.
Anger-relief-cautious hope
He’d given the Ghost Files to Batman as his last resort, believing in the hero and for his connection to Lady Gotham to sway him to give it a read through. Jazz had been adamant that if Phantom and the Ghost King was on that list, then she (as the Regent) would be too, though the two of them had argued against labeling Phantom as the Star King for the time being. Danny had grudgingly agreed to keep Phantom labeled as a Spirit of Protection, even if he went behind his sister’s back and gave Batman a list of his powers.
(Danny still had nightmares of Dan.)
(He lost his parents, but he hadn’t lost his family.) (He had to remember that.)
There were few things Jason would consider dear to him.
His books, kept neat and orderly in his apartment. His vigilante alias, taken from his killer to be a force of change. His grave, as a reminder that he came back. He’d been surprised to see Joker removed from the rogue list, hopeful that it meant he was avenged the clown fucker was finally dead and gone. Dick had held him again when he finally broke down and mourned himself, relief in the fact his killer would never hurt another innocent.
Never hurt his family again.
Barbie had framed the autopsy report and given it to her dad, where it proudly rested on his desk as a reminder that the clown was knocked off by a blessed soul and his daughter would never be hurt by him again.
The alley where his head remained mounted was a protected site in Crime Alley, enforced by both Red Hood and it’s people. A trophy for all of them to appreciate, because while they hadn’t been the ones to end him… they had survived to bare witness to the days free of Joker.
Harley Quinn was free, the happiest woman in all of Gotham- no, the world! The demon who’d made her in his image so long ago was gone for good and nothing would bring him back. She was free of her ex, her origin story was finally finished.
Jason counted the fact he was inadvertently avenged as the dearest part of what he was as equal parts man and shambling corpse. He was free of that burden.
And he had the bone-deep instinct that he knew exactly who to show his appreciation to.
