Disability Sun / Disabled Sun ☉
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A transparent image of the Disabled Sun, which is the same as the astrological symbol of the sun. It is a large black circle with a smaller black circle in the center. End ID]
So... I wanted a symbol to represent disabilities, one that wasn't the wheelchair symbol. As a wheelchair user myself, I do like the wheelchair symbol, but it also feels like an incomplete image of the disabled community as a whole. Disabled people can come in every shape and size, and for many, many of us, the wheelchair symbol isn't representative.
Disabled people may have wheelchairs, or canes, or crutches, or hearing aids, or service dogs, or different body shapes, or even nothing at all visibly indicating a disability. There have been alternative symbols suggested in the past, but most hinge on showing a silhouette, and there would never be a way to demonstrate all of us with one little bathroom-sign-style human. So, I made this! The Disabled Sun!
This isn't meant to replace the wheelchair symbol, as that certainly has its history and place in our community, it's simply meant to be an optional other symbol for those who choose to use it.
This symbol was chosen for the following reasons and meanings:
Outer circle represents the body; physical disabilities, our relationships to our bodies, disabled bodies in general.
The inner circle represents the mind; mental disabilities, our relationships to our minds, disabled minds in general.
The circles represent wholeness, representing that we are whole, complete people. We are whole, not despite our disabilities, but we are whole including our disabilities. We are not incomplete or broken, nor are we “missing” anything.
Circles also represent unity. In this case, the circles represent the solidarity and unity of disabled people across the wide range of disabilities. It also represents universal design.
The sun represents shining a light on disabled people, and the light we provide ourselves.
It's simple, discreet, easy to reproduce, and has a unicode symbol already. ☉
The symbol is welcome to be used by anyone of any kind of disability, be it physical, mental, neurodevelopmental, sensory, invisible, anything! If you have any sort of impairment and consider yourself disabled, you are welcome to use this symbol.

[Image ID: A transparent image of the Disabled Sun, a large circle with a smaller circle in the center, in the colors of the Disabled Pride Flag by Ann Magill. The disabled pride flag is a mostly grey flag with five diagonal stripes that start at the top left corner and run down to the bottom right corner. In order from left to right, the stripes are red, yellow, white. blue, and green.]
No credit is needed to use this symbol! It would be appreciated if you spread this post around to others to give it some traction, though!

Dyspunktional / Dyspunk Flag!
This is largely based off of the original flag, but I decided to do my own interpretation. I did not make dyspunktional, this is just my proposal for a flag.
--
The circled-A symbol represents punk, as it is the symbol of anarchism and has strong ties with the punk movement. The colors of each stripe are from the disability flag, the stripes of which are for different types of needs and disabilities (mental illness, intellectual and developmental disability, invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, physical disability, and sensory disabilities).
The shape of the flag is a chevron, and I chose this for a few reasons. Firstly, solidarity with other minorities, such as queer people. Many people have seen a similar chevron on a queer flag (however, I did make it far different so they wouldn't be confused for one another). In essence, it's meant to represent minorities within the minority, as well as solidarity with other minorities. Secondly, it simply looks cool, without being too jarring in its colors to the point of being eyestrain-y.
And that's about it! Dyspunktional was made with all disabled people in mind, so anyone fitting that descriptor is welcome to use this, just like they can be dyspunktional in general. You're free to use my flag for whatever, and edit it to your liking. I even included a transparent set of the chevrons in case you wanna change the background.
Under the cut, I'm going to put the definition of dyspunktional, as well as some alternate flags.
--
Definition of dyspunktional:
(From here, + archive)
"Dyspunktional is about radical inclusivity – there is no person who considers themselves disabled that isn’t included under the term, should they want to use it.
It’s a portmanteau of “dysfunctional” and “punk”: Dysfunctional because it can apply to any and all disabilities because the definition of a disability is that it inhibits daily function. Punk because it represents our rebellion against the harmful categorization of the medical industrial complex and against the society that refuses to give us (disabled people) what they need to fully participate in that society.
Because it’s based on the idea of radical inclusivity, Dyspunktional has no space for gatekeeping, no space for denying the experiences of others and should be focused on creating community and solidarity with all disabled people. The idea is that all of us are dysfunctional and therefore, all of us are gatekept from society in various ways and while our experiences are different, they do not differ in worth. No disabled person’s voice is unnecessary in the fight against ableism, no disabled person’s experience should go unheard.
No disabled person’s experience is more or less important than another’s. We all have something to offer to each other, we all have something to offer to the cause and no one should be afraid of speaking up or have their experiences doubted and questioned by other disabled people – we are already dealing with that coming from the medical establishment and abled society.
So, uh… IDK, join me in claiming our dysfunction and disability as something to be proud of and in rebelling against the system that wants us dead and wants to hold us down!
Be dyspunktional!"

People need to stop acting like the goal for mentally ill/disabled people should be to stop being mentally ill/disabled. People need to stop only using relatively healthy and/or neutrotypical people as role models for neurodivergant/ill people. And I'm not just talking about things like autism. I'm talking about objectively negative disorders too.
My dad is my biggest role model for how to manage depression and anxiety, not because he "overcame" them but because he lives with them every day. Which means some nights, we get Taco Bell because he doesn't have the energy to cook. Some weekends, we stay home because going somewhere noisy would trigger a panic attack. Sometimes he needs support from my mom or his girlfriend, and sometimes they can't give that support, and so I have a model for how to navigate asking for support without demanding it. I have a model for expressing need and expressing pain without making anyone feel obligated or guilty.
My life would not be easier if my dad cooked every night and took us places more. My life would not be better if my dad "overcame" his mental illnesses and didn't have them anymore. If that had happened, I would not have a model for how to move through the world as a mentally ill person. I would not know how to set MY boundaries and MY limits, because my limits are different from most people's limits.
I'm grateful for the ill people in my life who show me how to be a healthy person within the limits of an illness. I am grateful for the people who have more restrictive boundaries in order to protect their more fragile mental health. I'm grateful that all my role models did not "overcome" their illnesses. Everyone deserves someone like that.

If your "punk" label promotes exclusionism, it's not punk. Likewise if you use a punk label and you're exclus, you're not punk.

You decide to try out a wheelchair. Even though everyone’s warned you against it and said that it’s a big step to take, your pain has just been so bad lately. You’re ready to take that step. So you sit down in the wheelchair. Instantly, your legs are glued to the seat. You try to rise, but you cannot. You weep, for you are now trapped in the terrible fate of having to use a wheelchair and get around with no pain rather than walk and experience excruciating pain. You should have listened. Now you will never escape your prison. This is a horrible fate, only fit for tragic movie characters. You will never know freedom again (except, of course, for the freedom of being able to get around without pain).
And that’s how I think ableds think mobility aids work!

I may be pro-recovery, but only when it actively improves someone's life. If getting medication, therapy or seeking help, doesn't help and you've tried, then I'm not going to attack you for it.
Sometimes medications have horrible side affects and it makes your life worse. Some people have been forced on them and have had their autonomy taken away.
Finding the right therapist is arduous and expensive, especially if you do not have health insurance. I don't blame anyone who can't get one.
And in general, getting diagnosed can make you lose rights and testing is expensive. And often times doctors can misdiagnose you.
I am pro-recovery when it's helpful, I'm not going to defend medical professionals until their last dying breath, my blog is for those who struggle.
So like, fuck it, be unapologetically mentally ill, but heal if it helps.

kind of tired of people trying to pretend our disabilities…aren’t disabilities. saying they make us superior and shit like that. like. no. i am disabled: it doesn’t make me inferior of course but it doesn’t make me some kind of superior being either. i don’t have a secret der of skills. i just can’t do some shit: and that’s OKAY. it’s not a bad thing. the fact people are trying to make up for it by saying disabilities make us superior: they don’t. it’s okay to accept that our disabilities make us DISABLED. that’s allowed. we are allowed to be disabled and we are not lesser than for it. we do not have to make up for being disabled because being disabled is not a shortcoming. i understand it’s usually coming from a place of internalized ableism but it hurts.

[ID: A set of three symbols, with the one on the top being the main one. It displays a grey ring with five chevrons in the middle of it. The chevrons are green, light blue, white, yellow, and red, and represent the disability flag. The symbol on the top has a black outline, the one on the bottom left has a dark grey ring and lighter grey middle, and the bottom right has a lighter grey ring and no middle color. The bottom symbols do not have a black outline. End ID]

Dyspunktional symbol
So a while back, I made a flag for the term dyspunktional, a punk term meant for disabled people. After that point, I'd always wanted to make an accompanying symbol, and after months of remaking and tweaking the symbol while having the post sit in my drafts, here it is! I made multiple versions so you can use whichever suits your fancy.
The one on the top with the thick outline was mostly supposed to resemble some kind of pin, while the bottom two are probably friendlier for the internet, though I think both look great either way. It's meant to represent the flag, by having the circles with the chevrons coming through it. I had a pretty high number of vague homages when making this, namely the disability sun, the anarchy "A" symbol, etc.

As you might have noticed, tho I haven’t yet talked explicitly, I began thinking lately about how spaces for “mentally” disabled people just flat out ignore “physically” disabled people. I feel like shit that I’ve only began actively thinking about it now, and I especially feel like shit because it, the fact that I only began actively thinking about it now, looks like it proves the point of physdis separatists (even if perhaps partially it does, it sure as fuck doesn’t as a whole and does not erase the ableism from “physically” disabled communities towards “mental” disabilities).
Fuck, I’m gonna put this post out, if anybody dyspunktional wants to say anything you’re really welcome.
Comments from disability divisionists of any kind will be ignored, no need to bother.
_
I haven’t gotten any feedback, but I’ve had further thoughts. One day I’m going to post them.
