i'm still on "i come from catholics. latin catholics." because explaining the fact that he was raised in the church is explanation enough for the guilt and the complicated feelings towards religion. the fact that he associates being latino with catholicism or maybe catholicism with being latino is what really gets to me. eddie ties this religion — this religion he feels so guilty for abandoning, that still follows him around him everywhere — with his culture. being mexican, being latino, is integral to eddie. abuela's tamales and telenovelas and machismo he refuses to pass down to his son. and, in his eyes, catholicism is twisted in with that. the kind of knot you can't undo. that goes so much deeper than just a complicate relationship with religion. it's not just religion, it's culture, too. his culture. it's the people he grew up with, it's his childhood friends he met at his catholic elementary school, it's the church in el paso where he got married before shannon started showing. eddie thought he was free from catholic guilt because he stopped going to church a long time ago and he was fine with that, but he'll never stop being latino. and that, to him, is inherently religious. god, the implications of that. the fact that, to eddie, being queer wouldn't just disappoint a god he doesn't believe in anymore. it'd separate him from his culture. because he's okay with going to hell but who is he without abuela's crossing? without his st christopher pendant? disappointing god isn't the problem. not having a place to belong is what's terrifying.

tbh sometimes tumblr users’ analysis of characters of color’s sexuality and gender can be so colorblind. like i understand tumblr is like 90% white but like it’s not horrible to acknowledge how race and ethnicity can impact sexuality and gender. as a brown trans guy coming to terms with my gender was complicated because i was already perceived as masculine with my dark body hair and “masculine” facial features (ones that existed outside of the eurocentric beauty standard basically) and that definitely had an impact on how i perceived my own gender. i just feel like people need to be at least. slightly aware of character’s race and ethnicity when it comes to analysis and hcs. like are u constantly headcanoning black dark skinned female characters as transwomen? like u should take a second to unpack those biases but also realize how these characters’ race affects their gender. it also goes for sexuality too.

@cassieopeiia said yes when i offered to repost my afro-dominican Jason Todd headcanons so they could finally have some accurate latino Jason content so here!!
Both sets of his grandparents were inmigrants who made sure to teach their kids their culture and Bruce,Talia and Alfred did research so he could still grow up in it after he was adopted so he's not disconnected from his culture like you'd expect
Is darkskinned with a big nose, full lips, green eyes and shoulder length black dreads with one of them being white from The Lazarus Pit.As Robin,he wore his hair short and natural(as in,his classic curls but even thicker)
Speaks spanish often enough that it's a consistent part of his speech patterns but dosen't have an accent since he's so good at both it and english
90s/2000s anime kid but specifically watched the episodes and read the mangas in latino spanish whenever he could(Definitely a merch collector too!!!Nothing weird though,i feel the need to say that,he just loves buying volumes and figures and replicas of weapons and plushies-The last one is a secret though)
Has his pre-reboot Robin characterization but got victim blamed and a bad rep anyway because of antiblackness and xenophobia
Bullying Tim for being a gringo is one of his favorote hobby's
Duke and him compare their similar yet different experiences with blackness and got along even quicker than canon thanks to it
Mentors Damian's team The All New Teen Titans and next to Damian, the member he's closest to is Nell
Takes great care of his hair and will sometimes wear red beads-He actually has a couple sets in different shades!!!
Says his favorite color is red because it represents blood on his country's flag and nobody can tell wether he's joking or not
Sometimes feels guilty for 'being a stereotype' due to the whole being born to poor parents who were also addicts and growing up to be a huge asshole with anger issues and a thirst for violence but rarely lets it get to him because he thinks he's the coolest mf to ever exist(but we all know he's actually a boyloser)
Aave user, with his favorite word from it being 'deadass'
And he makes the obvious 'Concha' jokes too for irony because he's demisexual and aceflux
Loves his country's cuisine-especially flan,it's tied with neapolitan as his favorite dessert!-but his favorite type of latino food is mexican!Tres leches cake and tacos and burritos and mexican hot chocolate and all that make his mouth water like Atlantis
Wears traditional festive clothes for special occasions and if he can't,he'll just refuse to go("I'm not going out in public in that!" "It's literally a tux???" "You call that a tux?It dosen't even have shoulder pads!Don't patronize me,Dickardo.")
Listens to bachata for nostalgia reasons and has some songs memorized but generally a female rappers/death metal bands/punk rock kinda guy
Black and latino memes connoiseur, both the classics and newer ones
Adores dominican folklore and uses it's horror mythos as inspo as Red Hood
Thinks 'showing affection means you aren't tough!' is gringo nonsense so he's pretty open about if he likes someone,be it platonic or romantic
Poc4Poc strictly and has a thing for black women
The only thing him and Kyle can agree on is that latinos are superior
Very autistic, with no masking game now or ever due to the norms he was raised in never giving him the chance to learn to.It got him bullied at school and things didn't get better into adulthood until we got to my Rhato rewrite and he got to make REAL friends i.e Reconnecting with Eddie and my self-insert Summer Kent(i got into DC through watching Utrh and starting to selfship with him),Robin-ing up Duke and vice versa and meeting Rose,Artemis,Kyle,Thad and a bunch of ocs by @moonage-gaydream @theautisticcentre @refrigeratedboombursts @mayameanderings and @insomniac-jay
Punkero Gótico(Goth Punk)who's a straightedge as trauma coping, seeks out latino/black run thrift stores, goes to basement shows and charity events and protests when he has free time and usually just asks around for them so he can know, wears dominican themed corpse makeup and is an agender transmasc who describes his gender as 'Mostly nonbinary but being a guy makes things funny as hell and Not That Kinda Girl by Mcr describes me pretty well')
His love for classical literatiure ofc includes latino authors and he played JuegosJuegos.com tons as a kid
Calls Talia Mamí,Damian 'Duende',Duke 'El Real'(Real=Spanish for Royal but also means the same thing it does in english so it's basically him saying 'You're so fucking real' like the slang)and Summer 'Strawberry Pop'(Jason has a thing for pink-coded black women specifically m'kay?)
His favorite Marvel character and lucky for him his Marvel Variant too is Miles Morales. He thinks it's Hobie Browm though(PLEASE He's so obsessed with his non-existent coolness and relatedly Duke's actual DC Variant is Duke 'El Real' Thomas)
And his books Variant is Percy Jackson. The only real differences are 1.Percy is transfem instead of transmasc and 2.Jason's arc is about him being a self-made tragedy and highkey bad person who works his ass off to redeem himself and only works when he's not getting coddling and Percy's is about how she's never done anything wrong in her entire life yet gets treated like shit anyway and deserves to be treated kindly for once no matter how strong she is
My fancast for him is Aubrey Joseph.Everything i've watched of him-Acting AND as himself-is literally just irl Jason Todd. There's no better fancast for him out there,we've found Red Hood y'all
If you call him any version of 'Papí' and you're not Talia or one of his kids:'Lights Out Bitch!!!!'
Canon bonus':His birthday is on Dominican Restoration day,at my villa we sell mini packets of neapolitan cream with little spoons at our schools, his Lego movie is called 'Family Matters' which is the name of an iconic black sitcom and Leon from Pokemon's VA voiced him in the Wfa dub!!!

I wanted to bring up something I haven't seen anyone else talk about recently and that's the fact that Oliver and Ryan are two (presumably) straight actors who are playing two characters who will likely come out as queer soon. The reason I bring this up is because in the past I've seen people hate on straight actors who play queer roles. Saying that lgbtq roles should always go to lgbtq actors and that it's not right for straight actors to play those parts. As someone who is bisexual I strongly disagree with this. While I absolutely think we need more queer rep both on an off screen I think roles should always go to whoever is best for the part. I don't want to live in a world where actors are required to disclose their sexuality before they can't even go up for a part. Plus this kind of thinking also gives people on social media motivation to attack actors who haven't disclosed their sexuality (if you know the show Heartstopper you likely know what I'm talking about).
Like I get that a lot of the discourse around this kind of stuff comes from a good place. From people just wanting to make sure that our stories are being told correctly and with care and also wanting to see people who truly understand those stories play those parts. And also to see queer actors get opportunities they often don't get because even our stories get told by straight actors sometimes.
Still as an older millennial I've been watching queer media for years and years. Some of the best lgbtq media I've watched had straight actors playing gay roles. Queer as Folk is one of my all time favs. Most of the cast were straight but the show runners/writers were gay so the stories never felt disingenuous. I also never felt like the cast was just playing a part for a paycheck. They always felt like they were trying to tell these stories with as much care as possible, in fact it feels like they cared about their time on that show in some ways even more than a lot of their other roles.
I can't imagine anyone else playing Buck or Eddie besides Oliver and Ryan. They are what make Buddie so captivating and the biggest reason why we are all so invested. Chemistry like theirs is like lightning in a bottle it doesn't come along on every show and it wouldn't be there if they didn't care about the stories they were telling.
I know that most of the Buddie fandom wouldn't hate on Oliver and Ryan but I just needed to rant about this because I'm sure I'll see people bring this up at some point on twitter when this storyline starts to unfold. I just wish people would realize that an actor doesn't have to live an experience to tell it well that's what the job is. And you can tell when Oliver in particular talks about the show how much it matters to him that he tells Buck's story with authenticity even more so now that Buck is likely to be coming out.
As someone who is bi I can't tell you how important it will be if when that happens. Having a character like Buck who is a little older and fits into a lot of the heteronormative stereotypes come out will be huge and I know Oliver is the best person to tell this story.
Same with Ryan and Eddie. Even more so in some ways because if we do get a coming out story with Eddie we'll get to see an older Latino man figuring out his sexuality and having to deal with all of the cultural and familial pressures than could bring. Queer rep respecially for characters of color isn't something we get a lot of in mainstream media but even less for a character like Eddie and if it happens it will be incredibly important. Ryan has already proved how much he cares when telling Eddie's story especially with things like his ptsd and being a veteran so I know he'll put the same love into a coming out story for Eddie.

are you cuban? or not white in anyway? otherwise its really really weird for you to racebend white characters lol. it comes across performative (and a but fetish-y). why not draw the canon characters of colour? (also making the canonical drug dealer character latino is a bad look)
So, there are many things I want to say about this. I want to give an answer that isn't my instinctive response of "fuck you and i hope you shit your pants in your sleep", so I will attempt to address these questions and concerns.
I do find it funny that you sent another anonymous ask pretty much saying the same thing, because apparently, I didn't reply to your ask fast enough. For context, it is; "there are white cubans so do you enjoy cuban culture and think steve would fit in well with that? in that case you don't need to brownface a white character. or do you just want to fetishize hispanic cubans? also its really weird to make the only drug dealer character latino i mean come on......".
So first things first. No, I am not Cuban, but I am part Native American and was raised around primarily Hispanic people my entire life due to where I lived.
Second. I find it grossly performative for you to send this ask telling me not to headcanon a character a different race. I think this type of activism is extremist and unfounded in actual ideas or beliefs other than your need to feel 'better than' or superior to others.
In regard to fetishism, I would like to mention first to people that are not you, that fetishism of people of color is rampant and highly uncomfortable. It is seen recently with the new character of Miguel in the animated movie "Across The Spiderverse".
But back to the subject at hand, which happens to be my art of Steve Harrington, I want to ask where in all of my art is there fetish content? Are there multiple drawings or comments focusing on his looks? How hot I think he is? Personally, I don't see that.
I notice that in today's culture, people tend to throw around new words they learned to use as an end-all-be-all. Their winning card up their sleeve. But it's not, because you don't even use the word correctly. To make note of what fetishism is, I'll put the definitions below.
: an object or bodily part whose real or fantasied presence is psychologically necessary for sexual gratification and that is an object of fixation to the extent that it may interfere with complete sexual expression
or: an object of irrational reverence or obsessive devotion
To take these definitions we find that first, it is a topic for sexual gratification. And in my art, I'm personally not seeing anything sexual come into play. Sure, I put him in crop tops and short shorts. But I do that because I feel it fits his character regardless of race because of his personality and the time they were living in. I personally wear crop tops and don't set out to be sexualized, so if you see it in that way, I fear we may be encroaching on what I consider a "you problem".
Third, on you speculating on why I can't just keep Steve Harrington white as he is in canon. In multiple places, I do in fact mention that I am not drawing canon. I'm drawing headcanons. Headcanons, described by the dictionary, is "something that a fan imagines to be true about a character even though no information supporting that belief is spelled out in the text." So, this ask isn't quite viable seeing that I have never said I was drawing the canon version of Steve Harrington.
Fourth, you mention that I "brownface". I fear that you may also be the person that had a dry broom handle fucked up their ass when the new Ariel movie came out.
Fifth, you say that my half-Latino Eddie Munson is "a bad look". To this, I find it interesting that your first connection was drug dealing alongside a Latino character. Personally, I didn't take drug dealing into consideration. And rather a funny headcanon I saw of someone saying Latino Wayne Munson would cook peppers to "smoke" Eddie and his friends out of the house. And again, as someone who was raised primarily by Hispanic influence, my mother did the exact same thing. If you decide that every Latino character is based on stereotypes, then live your life that way, but don't tell me what is and isn't a bad look, seeing that you are the only person who has a problem with it.
Sixth, you ask why I don't just draw the canon characters of color. I will. I have sketches of them. But since you obviously have looked through my art, you might notice that I only really draw the older teens. They are my favorite to talk about and draw.
On that, Isn't it interesting that there are only three people of color in the show? Two are siblings, and one is a side character introduced in the last published season. This is why I add people of color into my headcanons. I find, that if I can do whatever I want with a personal interpretation of a character, I am going to add diversity where I can.
I think it's important as a culture of fans that produce new content over a piece of media, to fix, change, and do what the original writers didn't. We see this commonly in sexuality headcanons because there aren't that many canon lgbtq+ characters. Typically, fan-given content adds minority or oppressed groups that the original creators did not give. Because frankly, people of color deserve to see themselves in the media. Lgbtq+ people deserve to see themselves in the media. If we continue to stay true to canon exactly with all of our fan spaces, we would be found boring, repetitive, and stale. The idea of fan spaces is to take canon and expand it. To have fun with it and to add ideas and quirks to the characters that other people can relate to where they once could not.
I will not apologize for getting bored of every character being white. I will not change what I am doing either. Because I am not doing anything wrong, moral, or unjust in any way. I think the main problem comes with you finding so much hate with a silly drawing of Steve Harrington simply because he isn't white. So I wonder why you find him and Eddie not being white so concerning.
I hope this helps.

Pre-Ditf Dick,Jason and Roy headcanons but specifically in my trans woman Dick rewrite(Ft.some Lian)
Jayr*ys and Slade apologists dni,we don't do ped0 shit here unless it's condemming it
Jason and Roy are trans like Dick but in the opposite direction-That is to say, transmasc instead of transfem.Jason's egg cracked so early that he dosen't even remember not presenting as a boy and Roy's gender realization came shortly after Dick's thanks to her telling him about it and publicly coming out as a trans girl sidekick
Also all autistic!!Tism4Tism4Tism <3 Dick and Roy were a huge help in Jason embracing his autism and it absolutely shows in their interactions that none of them are allistic(this is a compliment and praise ofc)
Since Jason canonically respects women way more than he does men and older sisters and younger brothers tend to get along the best-speaking from experience bee tee dubs, him and Dick are super close. He seeks her out all the time as soon as they meet for the first time so she returns the favor and that leads to them becoming one of eachother's best friend's in addition to being adoptive siblings. They tell eachother everything and anything(without crossing any boundries)and she's his favorite hero even after he becomes Red Hood and demands respect towards her unless it's lighthearted teasing and she takes care of him by doing stuff like making sure he's well-rested and helping him with school and his hangouts with her lead to the other Titans viewing him as a little brother too
Dickroy is very much a thing.Like EVERYONE and i do mean EVERYONE knows they're in love before they do.They have that 'bickers like an old married couple' vibe yet somehow also the 'sickeningly sweethearts' one too. It's extremely infuriating and absolutely hilarious to watch and it took them until their 20s to get together.Their banter becomes way softer after that and by then the bite to it is more like a nibble and Dick was Lian's stepmom before Ntt even ended lbr.Roy's a huge flirt and it works on Dick very easily because she's easily flustered over him ever since her love epiphany and he's smug as fuck over it.Don't let that make you think he's not a malewife though,he is WHIPPED and you can catch him blushing and giggling and kicking his feet over her and doing whatever she wants him to literally any time of day
Jason used to think Roy was the coolest ever even if they weren't that close yet. Then Roy started dating his big sister and his Arsenal poster was violently shredded off his wall with his hands and insistences of 'You can do better!!!' were given to her.Dick was flabbergasted at his attitude change and Roy thought it was literally the funniest shit and lorded it against him whenever he could.Bruce also stopped liking him after their relathionship became official but he settled for glares and curt sentences
Jason used to get payed by Oliver to babysit Lian and they got along but after he came back as Red Hood, she just thinks of him as her lame uncle and tbh compared to her when she grows up,yeah he is muy uncool
Roy was the one to give Jason his first t-shot
Jason has extremely fond memories of being driven in the backseat of Dick's car to get McSupers together and her watching him,Eddie and Lian in the play section and ordering different things so they could share meals
If you make this one weird I'll Fucking Kill You but Jason had a habit of burying his face in Dick's chest for comfort, both because chests are just soft and warm and in times of emotional distress(I used to do this with my mom when i was shorter than her + Casual and nonsexual intimacy is very much encouraged in latino cultures, especially between younger boys and their older female family members so i feel it's fitting)

honestly I know I’m being deranged but not even a ‘brother’ could draw a line under anything for me 😅 there have been other tv show ships that have called eachother brother/sister and still got together in the future. and i guess right now the way they view their relationship IS brothers and besties so… unless eddie says ‘you are my legal and biological brother we actually have the same mom surprise!’ lmao it doesn’t mean it’s dead in my eyes. although i think most of the fandom will give up 😬
Okay, I don't think it will be dead either, as long as the show is on, there's a chance they'll pivot that way, like, legit *knock on wood* keep us limbo just to have them kiss in the final 10 minutes of the last episode of the show *knock on wood* just to say they did make them canon in the end *knock on wood* but I would take a brother as a "we don't plan on letting you see them being a couple" and settle in to watch them dance around it forever. But the thing is, the show is very careful about not letting them talk to or about each other in "you're my best friend" or "you're my brother" terms, and they even go as far as not having Chris call Buck uncle Buck when it is very common in latino cultures to have a kid call any safe adult tio/tia (I am tia Anna to kids I'm not biologically related to, and my parents' friends were always tio/tia for me growing up) and it would make sense to have Chris address Buck like that. They do have the "you're badass under pressure, brother" in under pressure and the "you said it, brother" in merry exmas, and Buck does ask Maddie "how do you tell your best friend you lost his kid?" and Eddie says he "lost his partner" in jinx although he means it literally as work partner. To have them say something like that after not doing it since the tsunami, and not letting them refer to each other directly like that since 2a, makes a statement. Even more with the way Eddie loves to dance around what Buck means to him. If Eddie makes any statement point blank, it will give the impression that he actually means it, considering Buck's insecurities putting them in the place he has to say it, does that make sense? I'm not abandoning ship anyway, the question is if after next week I will kick back and settle in for however many more seasons we have left of will they/won't they, or if I will be at the edge of my seat every time they're on screen together because any time now, yk?
Because the thing with this particular setup going the way it looks like it's going, is that they can keep it vague, they can make it platonic, but they can legit make buddie canon. Not they actually get together canon, but legit have Buck do something that can't be read as platonic, like for example Eddie goes "you're my best friend, man" *pulls Buck into a hug* *Buck relaxes against him* *sad noise* "friend, yeah" *fade to black* and bam, you have something, because Buck being frustrated with the idea of being the "best friend" after freaking out that Eddie has a new friend can't be twisted into something platonic. It would be the same thing they did with bucktaylor at the end of treasure hunt, while we all knew they were gonna go there, Buck's "friends, great" seals it. But they can keep it vague in less platonic ways, Eddie says something like "you're stuck with me" "I'm not going anywhere" "you really think you can get rid of me that easily?" and maintain the level of keep them guessing we are used to, along with the possible brother that draws a platonic line. I think that with the way the episode seems to be forming, that scene makes or break it, but in a "we will definitely see them be a couple in the future" or "we will be in limbo forever" way.

hi bia, I want to know your opinion re eddie cheating and latino culture/catholicism. I feel like in many ways a man cheating is something so normal in latin families (idk how this applies for latin people in the us but it's definitely a thing when living in latin america) and that's something that doesn't cause as much struggle with catholicism and "sin", as being queer does. I find it interesting how of course there's a loss that eddie thinks may happen if he cuts that last link to his religion connected to latino culture by coming out/coming to terms with his sexuality, that just doesn't seem to happen with other "sins"... idk if you've watched Brooklyn 99, but in there there's a Latina that comes out as bi to her parents and in the scene they basically tell her they'd rather she was dating someone married than admit that she was queer, and I feel like that's it, even tho I'm not sure eddie is aware of, he's falling into this (i believe) specific latino man stereotype where it's okay to do a lot of bad things, things maybe not accepted by the religion but unfortunately accepted by the culture, as long as you DON'T do the worst thing ever, which is being queer... idk if this makes sense lol, maybe it's not a thing lol, you dont have to post it I just dont have any other latino people i follow that may understand it, sorry
god, yeah, it's totally a thing. i grew up in texas but i was born and now live in latin america and this is so, so true. there are sins men are allowed to commit in latino communities because the sins are still "masculine". cheating on your girlfriend (they're not even married) is nothing. who cares. it still aligns with the misogyny that runs so rampant in latino culture. eddie sleeps with multiple women even though he has a girlfriend? oh, she wasn't enough him. she wasn't doing her job to keep him satisfied. it's a moral failing on her part, not his. and eddie's not that kind of guy, we know that, but this is all he learned growing up. it's very, very easy to fall back on the excuses you've heard a dozen times even when you know it's cruel. eddie dates two women at once and doesn't tell either of them? he's a firefighter, he's a single father, his life is stressful enough. let him have two women so when one gets high maintenance and irritating he can go to the other.
this is real! this is so real! it's so fucked up!
eddie breaks up with both marisol and not-shannon and gets with buck, though?
that'd be a problem. i have no doubt in mind eddie grew up hearing gay as an insult and faggot thrown around casually because homophobia is casual, not only in latino communities, but in the american south in general. he saw the way men who cheated would show up to mass with their wife against their side. her eyes were always so heartbroken, but that's something he's allowed. it's his right as a man. how can you fault his nature?
queerness is wrong, though. it's an abomination. you can't even confess to your sins because the church won't let you inside anymore. eddie can feel guilty for cheating on marisol all he wants, but guilt over something he's allowed is still better than bone deep shame over something he has not control over being.
and eddie's gonna hate himself for it! he's done so much to unlearn the worst parts of machismo, the parts that hurt him the most as a child, but god is it easy to fall back on when you need an excuse. his dad was absent most of his life growing up, but that's okay because he was providing. men don't sin for no reason. their wife isn't enough, they need to provide for their kids, their kids are a little too queer and need fixing. a heavy hand is better than an eternity in hell.
it's so complex. it's such a complicated relationship with himself, with religion, with being latino. god can judge him but how will he handle the judgment from his family. the church can hate him all they want but how is he supposed to handle the side eyes and whispers when he shows up to his high school friend's wedding and there's no plus one because it's either show up single or show up with a man.
men are allowed sin. men are allowed moral failing.
men are not allowed queerness.
and as much as eddie has been doing so much good work to unlearn that, the nasty, nails in your skin part of growing up latino are just as impossible to shed as the skin that covers your bones.
(also, yes, i did watch b99 and i remember that!)

Bizcocho
One more for this month because this was half written like... all month...
written for @steddiemicrofic prompt: Cake wc: 311 | rated: G | cw: none | tags: Latino/bilingual Steve Harrington, OC daughter, Steve Harrington has bad parents, Married Domestic | AO3 Link
Summary: Steve teaches his daughter 'Las calaveras salen de su tumba' to help her learn Spanish
“Las calaveras comen bizcocho!”
Quinn sang slash shrieked the lyrics as she ran laps around Steve.
“It's her favorite verse.”
Eddie nodded, commiserating with his husband. Steve had taught Quinn the children’s song, Las calaveras salen de su tumba, a week ago. It had tickled Eddie at first, their little girl, singing about skulls... but now it was nonstop.
Eddie knew how badly Steve wanted Quinn to be bilingual. His family cut ties after Steve came out as bisexual, but he still had his language and some cultural traditions. It made him feel connected to a larger identity, one that couldn't abandon him.
He'd told Eddie how his Abuela taught him about his heritage when he was small. His maternal grandmother didn't even speak English, yet his own parents avoided Spanish at all costs. They prided themselves on how well they passed as white Americans and sneered at any sign of the language their own parents spoke. It made more sense for his father, Steve had told Eddie. His paternal grandfather had been a poor immigrant, wanting to reinvent himself. He changed their surname; Ricardo Hernández became Richard Harrington. He'd picked an anglicized last name, with the same last initial, at random. Even after his Abuela moved in with them to help care for Steve as a baby, he couldn’t remember hearing his mother ever speak Spanish.
Steve's memories of his Abuela remained a comforting time capsule, sealed by her own passing. They would never know if she would have accepted him when he came out, loved Eddie like family, or celebrated Quinn's birth with them.
Eddie picked Quinn up and bounced around with her as she sang the same snippet of lyrics again. He wanted to support any attempt at keeping Spanish in his husband and daughter’s life.
“Mine too 'mi amor.'” Eddie winked as Steve’s eyes rolled.
Full lyric referenced and translation note after the cut
The full lyric referenced and the translation from 'Las calaveras salen de su tumba,' 'The Skulls Come Out of their Grave.'
“Cuando el reloj marca las ocho
Las calaveras comen bizcocho
"When the clock strikes eight
The skulls eat cake"
(Also know as the Chumbala cachumbala song)

I think tackling Eddie’s Catholicism would be a great opportunity to show the difference between being an American Catholic and being the kind of Cultural Catholic community that historically immigrant groups fall into - being a Latino, Irish or Italian Catholic is different. The guilt and shame isn’t from a big conscious fear of fire and brimstone or the wrath of god. It’s why Catholic’s who consider themselves atheist are still Catholic if they’re Irish, Italian or Latino. It’s such a complicated thing to unpack. You can’t just go to yourself ‘well god made me and loves everyone so I should accept myself too!’ and the problem is solved.
I found it interesting that the show made religion a big plot, especially in Bobby's storyline. Normally I'm not really comfortable with religion playing a huge role in the stories I consume, but I DO like it when it's used to deconstruct a person's (potentially negative) relationship with religion, and how it's affected their life.
It would be interesting for sure to see how catholicism affected Bobby, a white American from the Midwest vs. how it affected Eddie, a Latino American from Texas. They could do some really interesting juxtaposing here if they wanted to. Especially in that Bobby finds comfort in religion, whereas Eddie finds resentment and pressure.
I really do hope the show goes into it a bit more too. Even if they don't fully deconstruct the Catholic guilt thing in a big huge arc, I think it could be interesting to have it pop up in little ways again and again. Then Eddie has to really look at it and himself and wonder how deeply entrenched the thoughts instilled in him by the church and by the patriarchy (that absolutely 1000% affects both religion and Latino culture) have affected his life and how he views himself and the life he feels he can/cannot live.

Imagining first-gen Latine/a/o! Reader x Eddie ft the rest of the Spicy Six bc I can
They move to Hawkins after the great earthquake, the town is still shaken up, but coming back together, their family moves for job opportunities popping up left and right.
Reader is out of place in Hawkins, the nearest Latin market or store is miles away, and they usually get their goods from a family friend a few towns away.
Reader gets teased at Hawkins High for their body hair and how dark it is/ how much they have, only for Eddie Munson to stand up for them, making fun of the jocks for being bothered by something like body hair.
Reader tutors Eddie; he’s not risking flunking again.
Eddie invites reader to sit at his table with Hellfire Club, knowing reader usually eats lunch in the library or outside. Reader denies in fear of being made fun of for their leftovers, different from everyone’s lunch.
Eddie still pushes to get closer to reader, consistently bothering them in their shared classes and always trying to make them laugh, eventually successful.
Reader befriends Eddie’s friends, meeting the rest of the gang and Hellfire Club.
If reader has another native language, Eddie is infatuated with it and how they speak it. He constantly begs to hear it and blushes at reader's accent.
Reader bashfully invites Eddie to a family function. When he sees the food is unfamiliar to him, he gets excited and asks the reader to explain the dishes.
At the party, you get him to dance with you due to coaxing from family and lots of teasing, and Eddie is a sucker for any excuse to be near you.
During the summer, reader meets Argyle during his visit to Hawkins with Jonathan and gets excited to meet another Latino.
Reader and Argyle bond over family experiences and cultural similarities
Eddie is so happy to see reader begin to feel at home.
Reader first falls head over heels for Eddie when he punches a man at The Hideout for drunkenly being xenophobic at the bar, complaining about immigrants in Hawkins.
Once you begin dating, Eddie starts taking tutoring lessons to learn your family’s native language to better communicate with them.
Your older family members tear up at the gesture, immediately doting over him and stuffing him with food and treats, backhanded complimenting him about his hair while also trying to manage it.
Steve asks to learn your native language from your older family, and Eddie wants to impress the ladies with his language skills. Still, he can’t fix his accent to save his life.
Robin laughs at Steve because she can speak your family’s language, with slight imperfections, but they are genuinely impressed.
Your family gives all your friends embarrassing nicknames: Robin is “blond,” Steve is “flirt,” Eddie is “big hair” or “rocker,” Nancy is “skinny,” Jonathan is “blonde boy,” and Argyle is “hippie boy.”
Argyle’s visits to Hawkins often include visiting your home to fill up on comfort food and get doted on by the women in your family.
Eddie has deemed himself an unofficial translator after a while to help your family with any difficulties.
On a special occasion, before graduating from school, your family asks Jonathan to take photos of you in some traditional clothing they’ve had for you saved for a special occasion.
Eddie is in absolute awe at how amazing you look when he sees the photos, begging for a copy for himself.
Eddie is so talkative, but when you explain your family’s culture and traditions to him, he shuts up and listens, staring at you with those big brown doe eyes.
Your family teases you about him, jokingly asking you to prepare for marriage and grandkids.
Eddie sets out to learn how to make foods from your family so he can impress you.
Just! Ahhhh! This is so self-indulgent, but I love it so much. Also, I need Argyle to be my bestie; thank you. Also this is retribution for how this fandom treated my goofy boy Argyle.

Okay for Beyond the Spider-verse, I want more Puerto Rican/Latino music. Miles is part Puerto Rican, and every mix Latino I met like Latino black, Latino Asian, Latino white- they all listen to a bit of Latino music (no matter what because latino parents always be playing loud ass music on a weekend mornings for cleaning day). Like it would be amazing if they added Reggaeton, Dembow, Latin trap, some oldies music! Like can you imagine Daddy Yankee playing in the background or Bad Bunny (i know cliche especially since he's cancelled but his music still slaps) or Aventura or Frankie Ruiz, Eddie Palmieri? This would be a great way to have some Black and Latino music combined, because that's New York. New York has it all ingrain together, especially that's what Miles' represents.
Also not saying the music from both movies were bad- No! They are amazing. I have them on replay most of the time when I'm vibing. All I am saying is this is a great way to have more Puerto Rican culture put in for Miles.

Just want to add that my ask never meant to suggest there’s no such thing as xenophobia or racism in Europe or that white Latinos aren’t ever victims of xenophobia. I agree 100% with both statements.
That’s why I liked the message the show sent in the funeral protestor episode. That man was absolutely also being xenophobic. He refused Hen and Chim’s service because of their respective races. He refused Eddie’s service because of his ancestral nationality and cultural heritage.
Hi Anon!!!! No worries I understood you ask perfectly, and it's a very interesting discussion, it's just that it's a complex one....but I got you no worries 😉
Thank you for adding this!!!
