favorite fic you wrote this year: For sure Unforgiven, it was my baby.

least favorite fic you wrote this year: Love Between Goddess and Demon ended up being kind of disappointing for me. It didn't develop how I wanted it to and I'll admit I abandoned it since it didn't have any readers.

favorite line/scene you wrote this year: Probably the first chapter of Unforgiven, I couldn't wait to get Leon and Jake together again ha ha.

total number of words you wrote this year: 131,491 published!

most popular fic this year: By hits and kudos it was Unforgiven. My oneshot Smoking got the most notes on Tumblr.

least popular fic this year: It was Three To One, which surprised me honestly.

longest completed fic you wrote this year: Love Stuck was my longest completed fic at 23,307 words.

shortest completed fic you wrote this year: Sparring Partners was a oneshot with 1,796 words.

so i got back a compo. the story itself is fine, i've got a good grasp on it. i failed language use. the problem is that improving language use takes time. at this moment the plot is fine and resolved and i dont need to do anything else there, but the language. by heaven. its terrible. it takes reading and writing more, a lot more, understanding how the damn sentences are formulated and how to form them properly. it's all well and good with shorter sentences, but with the longer ones it sort of goes to fuck.

the problem is, of course, that it takes time. and i have zero fucking patience. my ambitions are too high for my level of skill and i need to pace myself better. as the months pass i'll just get better at comprehending and forming sentences, but as of now i'm just. terrible. and it'll take time. as of now i can improve the language use score by just... making sentences more conservatively and trying not to make too many run-ons. be simpler. less grand. save the grand for the EOY when i have the vocab and grammar capacity for it.

just sustain the reading and the writing. that's the other hard part. i will exhaust my furry vns at some point. theyre not adequate either because i need dialogue tags and actions and expressions and shit.

i'll figure a way. it'll take time (and that is my bane), but i'll find a way.

Did you reach your reading goal for the year (if you had one)?

Yes! My goal was 40+ and I read 74 (as of 30 December). I'm very pleased with myself.

What are your top 3 books you read this year?

My official top 3 are coming soon in my Books of 2021 Wrapup, but three of the books that lived in my brain the longest this year were I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier, Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde, and An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon

What's a book you didn't expect to enjoy quite so much going in?

Antigone by Sophocles, translated by H.D.F. Kitto. It was surprisingly good and impressively relevant for such an old play.

Were there any books that didn't live up to your expectations?

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote and The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant.

Did you reread any old faves? If so, which one was your favorite?

I reread The Graveyard Book (Gaiman), The Pearl (Steinbeck), I Am the Cheese (Cormier), Boneshaker (Priest), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Adams), and The Tempest (Shakespeare). The only one I reread because I love it was The Graveyard Book; besides that I either reread these for class or because I wanted to revisit them because I didn't remember them very well.

Did you DNF any books?

Island by Aldous Huxley and The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. Both I would give another shot, but it just wasn't the right time for them when I tried them.

Did you read any books outside your usual preferred genre(s)?

The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant is a romance, which I don't normally read. However, it wasn't very good (and arguably barely a romance as it's advertised). Otherwise I'll kind of read anything so nothing else was super far outside my preferences - simply because I'll give almost anything a shot.

What was your predominant format this year?

Physical - but I did try my first audiobook this year.

What's the longest book you read this year?

The Empire of Gold by S.A. Chakraborty - clocking in at 782 pages.

What are your top 3 anticipated 2022 releases?

HMRC by Juno Dawson is the only one on my radar right now, but I'm sure I'll check out other 2022 releases.

WIP Wednesday

Thank you for the tag @thnxforknowingme!! My current WIP is Echoes of You, and it's a Klaine/Kurtbastian fic with a yet-to-be-determined endgame. The chapters are really short so I don't want to reveal too much, but I hope you enjoy this little snippet :)

It might not have been the best idea, coming to Sebastian’s apartment after his meeting with Blaine. But, he’s here now, so. He’s not even sure why he’s here, not really. It’s not like that first night, when Blaine asked him to leave, and he’d shown up at Sebastian’s door, not even realizing where he was going until he was here. No, this was a conscious decision. But he’s not upset like that night – he should probably be more upset, actually. Maybe that’s why he’s here. He needs the distraction, doesn’t want to start thinking about why he’s not more upset. Sebastian is really good at providing a distraction.

Just enough to leave a little mystery ;)

I also didn't expect Finrod to show up, but he did and insisted it had to be from his POV. Anyway, read it for the first use of the 'Marsupia' tag on AO3.

I’ll Explain Everything to the Geese by napricot - fucking hilarious, great SamBucky fic with a 10/10 relationship dynamic and some quality sam talks to birds content. 

Barium Nights by LivingProof - very angsty, if u like to see Bucky suffer then this is a great fic for you. Amazing writing style. Excellent use of Madripoor as a setting. 

Blue-Eyed Matador by FlamingoQueen - wanna see Bucky get revenge on Hydra? Very brutally? While the Avengers try to track him down? Set in an AU where Bucky escapes right after the battle of New York and the Avengers don’t know who he is while he’s systematically killing everybody who ever wronged him. WIP with 70+ chapters.

Amazing Writing featuring: humor that will have you dying (I’d almost woken up family members while reading Footloose’s work at ungodly hours of the morning XD), Emotional moments that will make you weep, A+ Sass master comebacks, and Descriptions that make it feel as if you’re there!

Another bonus is that side characters get a front row and people of this are all so well written.. I mean...

Ugh, and not just the side characters are well done, but Merlin and Arthur themselves!! The story is told in switching POV between Merlin and Arthur and it’s so freaking on point it makes me weep

AND AND if well written characters aren’t enough, there’s A++ realistic and interesting world building... just... yes thank you please go on

To celebrate one of my besties’ birthday, I’m going hint and tease at a few things I’ve been working on behind the scenes when I have time. I have no planned publishing timeframes in mind. I’m not even working on them consistently, but they are things that may be of interest to the fandom.

In less than one mortal day, he’d gone from passively helping his brothers —those who didn’t live in the mortal realm— rule Vesperis and retiring alone every evening to sharing a bed with his mate and giving her as much pleasure as she could handle. And then some, or so he hoped.

Her barely lucid state made him think he was succeeding.

“Fate was too kind to me,” he murmured.

She snorted softly. “Kind to you.”

A smug grin tugged at his lips. “I’m glad my attentions are satisfactory, mea Eoi.”

“This whole weekend is gonna go straight to your head, isn’t it?” she murmured.

He teasingly shifted his hips enough to make her jolt and squeak. “Doubtful.”

“In hindsight, I probably should’ve specified which head.”

He pressed his lips to her hair again. “I’ve waited lifetimes to please you. Surely I’m allowed a few moments of hubris.”

A yawn prevented her from answering right away and he responded to her tired nuzzling of her collarbone by tightening his hold around her waist. 

“‘Suppose you’ve earned it,” she conceded. 

She pinched his side when he offered to ‘earn it’ some more. “We can’t just spend the whole day like this.”

“We can,” he parried. “Unless you had prior engagements…?”

“Not really,” she admitted. “But we should probably get you some modern clothes and things. You haven’t been to this world for a long time, right? A lot has changed.”

He conceded her point, more than a touch disappointed at the prospect of being unable to touch her wherever he pleased for the length of their outing. Even if he was quite curious about discovering some of the modern marvels his youngest brother often referenced when they spoke. 

Leviathan wondered how far from his youngest brother he was.

“Amasie?” he asked. At her answering hum, he continued, “Where are we? Geographically speaking.”

“London, England,” she said.

“Truly?”

She glanced up in confusion at the pleased note in his voice. “Been here before?” she guessed.

“Yes — but Lucifer and Hades are also fond of England. I believe Luce is near London. Last time Hades visited he hadn’t settled yet, but said he’d definitely be in the ‘United Kingdom’.”

“That encompasses England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland,” she informed him. “If you’re wanting to visit them at some point, it’ll be easier if they’re both either in England or Scotland, but Wales and Ireland aren’t impossible ventures. I’ll just need more time to plan that around work.”

“I will write them,” he said, warmed by her thoughtfulness. “Do not fret over traveling just yet. They are just as able to get to me and there are magical means of travel as well.”

#2 of 13 - The Haunted (Dramione)

The hallway lights were on when she returned, sending an unsettling chill up her spine.

The bedroom lights were still out.

“It’s probably the wiring. It’s an old house. It wasn’t an easy restoration process,” she muttered to herself as she shined the light into the bedroom doorway. 

Nothing looked out of place. 

She stepped forward, ready to use the flashlight as a weapon if need be, and felt around for the light switch. She jumped when her lights turned on.

The room was exactly how she left it. 

With a deep sigh of relief, Hermione decided it was well past her bedtime. She couldn’t be arsed to care about the lights. She went to set the flashlight on her nightstand, turned out the bathroom light, and went back to the doors so she could shut and lock them for the night.

Only the lights from her bedroom and the hallway immediately in front of her were on.

The light at the very end of the hall was flickering, stuttering in and out of light.

“What the fuck,” she whispered.

It went out.

The next light stuttered once, then did the same. One by one the lights in the ceiling shut off, slowly drawing the darkness closer to her door. When the fifth light from her stuttered, she thought she saw a shape in the darkness. When the fourth light went out, she remembered how to move and slammed the double doors shut, locking them as quickly as her shaking fingers would allow while curse after curse fell from her trembling lips.

She made sure all the connecting doors to her rooms were locked tight. Then shut and locked every door except the bathroom door. All that remained was her room, her walk-in closet, and the master bathroom.

“It’s just the wiring,” she muttered. “Just call it a night. Call someone to fix it tomorrow.”

She realized she could, should, call one of her friends just in case. Harry possibly. Maybe he could stay the night. He’d offered, after all. She decided it was worth the guaranteed months of teasing and reached for her phone— Only it was no longer in her back pocket. Nor was it on her nightstand.

She hadn’t touched it since before she left the rooms the first time, so where could it have gone?

In the silence, she could just barely make out the distant notes of her ringtone starting to sound. A wave of dizziness hit her full force, then she collapsed in the middle of her bedroom floor. 

Her phone had to be in the kitchen. But how? She’d never set it down. Or taken it out of her pocket to begin with.

What the fuck was going on?

Her phone didn’t stop ringing after the usual time. It just kept ringing and ringing and ringing, but she refused to go get it. When it started getting louder, nearer, she thought her heart would explode from the stress of it. 

She didn’t move as the sound rounded the corner and came closer to the door, There were no footsteps, just the sound of her phone, which, from what she could tell, was on the floor outside her door now. At no point had it sounded like it was being held in someone’s hand as they walked. The sound stayed low and close to the ground.

She almost threw up when her phone slid itself under the door. Still ringing. Not a hand in sight.

The caller ID read Unknown. She hit cancel, ceasing the constant ringing, and her ears buzzed in the sudden silence.

A quiet chime. A text.

The sender was blank. No name. No number. No Unknown. Simply blank. Her hands shook as she picked up her phone and unlocked it. The message was longer than she expected.

No blood ties you to this land. Why do you stay?

“What the fuck does that mean,” she whispered, half angry and half terrified out of her wits.

She didn’t believe in ghosts. She refused to believe this house was haunted in any capacity. It was just preposterous. She had to be dreaming. Fell asleep reading and now she was stuck in a nightmare. It had been a long week and she was in a new house. It made sense.

Her phone chimed again, making her twitch and squeak in surprise. Angry at her own cowardice, Hermione chose not to read the new message. Instead she stood, left her phone on the bed, and marched to her closet. 

Nightmares were nonsense, especially ones this realistic. She’d change out of her jeans, get into bed, and fall back into a normal sleep. If she grumbled under her breath as she slipped off her flats, that was her prerogative. 

“Absolute rubbish,” she muttered, lifting her jumper over her head and tossing it in the hamper. Her bra quickly followed suit. “There’s nothing to be afraid of. It’s just a stupid bloody dream.”

She undid the belt on her jeans, then the button and zipper, and shuffled out of them. If she was dreaming, then surely a quick dream-shower to soothe her nerves would be fine. Or it would wake her up, hopefully without her wetting the bed as a result. She felt juvenile enough as it was. 

She stepped deeper into the closet to get towels from a box in the back. She’d barely started unpacking her things and there was still a bit of sawdust on the shelves of the newly built linen cabinet in the master bath that she needed to clean out before she put the towels away.

She bent over to grab two light grey towels, one for her body and one for her hair, when she felt a feather-light touch over her arse.

She barely made a sound when she twisted to look behind her, a strangled squeak at best, only to find…nothing.

She was entirely alone in the room.

Hermione shook her head and tried to breathe. 

Shower. Bed. Wake up from nightmare.
