also while we're here i would like to share the two iterations of tumblr user gorespawn that have existed since i abandoned this blog back in like early 2021. Who wants me

if you are a trans man or masc, masculine nonbinary, genderqueer, genderfluid or other gender non conforming identity, masc gay, a bear, a butch, stud, or boi, or other masculine queer person and don't feel welcome in any queer spaces, you're not alone.

the communities both irl and online have become EXTREMELY hostile toward mascs and men to the point of straight up excluding us and changing their wording to justify their violent exclusion. from renaming nonbinary spaces to "femme & them" and "she+" spaces, to telling men & mascs that they would "Scare" the women and "nonbinary" folks just by being there, as if masculinity and manhood are inherently traumatizing to be around.

masculine and male nonbinary folks have it so hard- most nonbinary spaces are almost definitely women's spaces who also conflate womanhood with nonbinaryhood, and often times just view nonbinary people as confused women. we are not inherently traumatizing to be around: masc enbies need places to go. we are still nonbinary and still trans and still queer for fucks' sake

nonbinary has never and will never mean femme or woman-adjacent inherently. nonbinary means what it means: people who don't or refuse to adhere to the gender binary, regardless of what side it is. masculinity is included in this, femininity is not the only way to be nonbinary.

masc queers do not have to bend over backwards to try to be more feminine and thus "less threatening" in order to have places to go. that's dysphoric and just inaccurate to a lot of queer folks' identity and presentation. it blows my mind because it makes no sense, anyway, even within the gay community, hypermasculinity has been present and even sought after by some people who find it very attractive, twunks, hunks, bears... but between the periods in queer history people started viewing masc gay leathermen and kinksters as the ones who were responsible for spreading AIDS and thus removing them from pride parades,

AND the lesbian separatism moment picking up to remove butches & male & masc lesbians from lesbian spaces identity, paving the way for modern rdical femniism, we've only entered a downhill landslide of hating men and mascs and ultimately trying to erase us from the queer community entirely.

the queer community is not the "women & femmes community". the queer experience is broad and vast, it includes a wide variety of masculine and male experiences, as well as genderfluid, multigender, completely ungendered and other gendered experiences. the lesbian, trans, bisexual, nonbinary, gay and general queer communities aren't the "safe place to hide from men & mascs community" like estranged rdfems and terfpilled trans folk like to tell you they are.

this is the QUEER community and it includes ALL forms of queerness, masc, femme, butch, male, neutral, bigender, neutral, and all. he/shes and he/hims and he/theys and he/its and so on are just as much of a part of this communities as she/hers and they/thems. you can't cast a blanket of "inherently abusive" over all men and mascs and one of "inherently abused/incapable of being abusive" over all women and femmes because that just traps you in a fantasy land that doesn't exist AND it prevents mascs and men from getting the help, resources and community they NEED.

men & mascs are hurt and abused by women & femmes every day and we refuse to speak about them because we live under a white cisheteronormal patriarchy and have complaints about how that functions. the complaints are legitimate but assuming that all men and mascs are oppressing all women and femmes and that women can never be oppressive is a false as hell narrative that actively damages people.

enough is enough. this mindset is hurting people. it's leaving masc and male queers to be estranged, harmed and even dead. i care about you if you're being affected by this mentality and these behaviors. you deserve community, safety, and a sense of belonging, you do belong, even if we struggle to form our own spaces due to unjust hatred. we will do our best to band together and keep each other safe. we must

i do very much like the idea of baby butch lesbian pidge. or futch or however we wanna diagnose what she’s got going on in canon. but i’ve always seen her having a love/hate relationship with her femininity

when she first came out as trans she was veeery little and flocked to femininity like coming home. it was so easy to put on dresses and grow out her hair and play with girl toys. she wanted to!! and katie rolls off the tongue much easier than any other name, but her annoying brother still calls her that old nickname sometimes :/

(but it’s fine. it was pidge from pigeon. it was her first word. for some reason.)

and when she decides to sneak into the garrison detransitioning for the time being made sense. they’re looking out for a girl. with long hair. it’s the best plan she’s got. it’s for her family she can do it. she can do it she can just pick up the scissors… and…

pidge keeps his head down. doesn’t talk much, even to the two (other) guys he’s grouped with. doesn’t talk to them even as they all get launched into space with two more men. just five boys in a giant lion. guys night, right?

but soon enough it gets clear this isn’t temporary. this is real. they’re in this together. they have to mind meld and get along and be on the same wavelength twenty four fucking seven. pidge has to come clean.

so she does. she’s a girl. the name has grown on her but she’s a girl she’s she.

and the team accepts it. loves her regardless. hell, even saw through her botched haircut.

so… yay. she’s a girl and they know. but would they be okay with her being… girly? she’s missed the dresses and the hair and pretty flowers. yeah allura is all those things and they all like her just fine but would it be weird if pidge just suddenly gets girly? she likes the masc look too but damn she misses heels sometimes. she hates having to deal with her shortness

one day allura weasels all of this out of her and allura doesn’t take no for an answer. so pidge is dolled up in one of allura’s best dresses, face beat to the gods, hair done in the girliest style they can manage with her… whole situation. and she’s beaming at her reflection

then allura drags her to dinner, hiking up the skirt so she doesn’t trip over herself as she gets into her seat. pidge toughens up and waits for the laughs to hit her. for someone to assume pidge got roped into this and secretly hates it. the “uhh… who are you and what have you done with pidge?”

but none of that happens. shiro says she looks nice. keith likes the hair. hunk likes the dress. lance demands to get dolled up next.

if anyone notices pidge’s immovable smile for the rest of dinner, they don’t comment on it. and they don’t bat an eye when skirts and dresses make their way into the rotation of pidge’s outfits right alongside her pants and overalls

trans butch dyke, I work under a wide verity of weather conditions (below -25°F to 100°F or more) and do some pretty physical work, what is a durable, reliable, simple and (hopefully) not too expensive watch for me?

This is exactly the type of watch I like to wear despite not doing any physical work, let me help.

So the first and most practical choice is a Casio G-Shock. They’re absolutely bulletproof and they’re also pretty cheap. But if you’re like me you just don’t like the way they look. So the most expensive but closest in vibes watch manufacturer to what you want is Marathon. They make a couple of cheaper models but the quartz TSAR is a giant hunk of stainless steel and I think it looks amazing. On the other hand you might pay between $600-1000 for a secondhand one.

For about the same price you could get one of the beefier Seiko Prospex watches originally targeted to divers. These are also unkillable and huge on the wrist and will make femmes swoon. But Seiko, in their wisdom, also make quartz ‘reinterpretations’ of them at about the $300-400 mark. Here’s a solar powered quartz version of the giant ‘tuna can’ watch that will run until the solder fails:

And then for my last, slightly exotic pick, I recommend a brand called CWC. They made all of the British military’s issue watches for decades, and you can find a secondhand CWC G10 in great condition for about £250-300 (plus however much shipping from the UK adds) on eBay. Make sure you’re not buying their bullshit imitator ‘MWC’

Oh and you could get a Luminox but those are cop watches and it’s up to you whether that’s a pro or a con

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING !!! im sorry this took so long to answer it kinda turned into My Wip 101 but i will talk about dr tempus i promiseeee

ok so. basically this story is called Deus Ex Machina which isnt just a good thematic nerd name it is also the name of a train on which the story takes place!! a train that, while obstensibly being a luxury sleeper train for the rich and famous, also acts as an undercover escape route for the downtrodden and desperate (a. a deus ex machina. if you will.). andddd it's crewed by an eccentric gang of queer misfits, aka our protagonists, aka the scrunklies <3. there is also one (1) misfit/protagonist/blorbo missing and this is dr trix tempus herself, the inventor of the tech that powers this train and co-owner of it.

dr tempus mysteriously disappeared a year or so after the construction of the train (about... 20-25 years before the story starts), but before that, her and her butch wife peregrine way built the deus together. dr tempus is/was a slightly mad scientist— fantasy quantum physicist is the best way i can think to describe it— while pere is an engineer so they made a good duo! it was a bit rocky at the start tho. tempus was hirin a henchperson to help with the evil lab cleanup and unfortunately instead of getting a bumbling hunk or an Igor (pratchettstyle) she got dragged into a weirdo friendship kicking and screaming. she's got that shrimp morality from moving a lott as a kid and hyperfocusing on science that makes her treat most things as experiments. not in a "people dont matter" sort of way but more in a "i must interact in the Correct Manner and Control the Variables and make sure its all ethics board approved (the ethics board doesnt apply to her)" way. she's not super comfortable staying in one place or really having a steady centre or any kind of home for the same reasons. she's very driven and very clever but not very good at taking care of herself or expressing emotions. then again neither is her wife so they ball together (they do not ball) (the whole plot is catalyzed by the lack of ball this causes) (whoops)

So i promise ive still shelved tungsten rose, at least until next november.

However in the shower a thing kinda struck me:

So Tungsten Rose started out as a pretty standard YA-esque novel, with the catch that it was told from the perspective of the two hunks competing for the heroine's attraction, and that all 3 main characters were in their early 30s.

Nothing groundbreaking, this is nanowrimo afterall, just variations on a theme.

But then I got a visit from the worldbuilding fairy, and Ri'et became the most interesting thing about the story: this nations that's simultaneously futuristic and medieval, utopian and dystopian; and which is tearing itself apart between the desire to create beauty, and the fear leading them to create weapons.

Ri'et is a place that consider 4, 6-hour shifts of manual labor a week borderline inhuman, but where every single child must undergo extensive testing for their potential to become a super soldier - And yet the two main characters, are a pair of hunks each motivated predominantly by the desire to win wealth and glory.

Those two things don't match.

With a setting like this, the main characters need to reflect the conflict inherent in the setting, and wealth and glory do not factor into this conflict. It worked well as a driving force when the story was two hunky butches fighting over a femme, but not with all this other stuff thats come in.

Starhound: April Devlog

I've mentioned the RPGmaker game I'm working on a bit before, and since that's always gonna be pretty slow with me working full-time, I thought it'd be good to keep track of my pace with end-of-the-month progress posts. So! Here's what I've done in April.

(For the record, at the moment I'm actually planning on calling the game "Star Hound Vega", as the [Thing] [Descriptor] [Name] pattern is venerable among tokusatsu and mecha type heroes, but "Starhound" is my name for the setting and stories generally.)

Finished the first dungeon! It took more passes than I thought it would, as it always does, and I'm sure there'll be more tweaks in future, but I have now got to the point where I'm able to play through it and go "wow! that functions as intended without breaking! no notes"

2. Updated some sprites! Previously Vega's and Nemea's were just placeholders, but I've arrived at some that I feel pretty good about and represent them much better. Placeholders on the left, final sprites on the right:

I ended up using the "male" creator for Vega, which I think works great for creating butch women. (I have hemmed and hawed a bit over if I'm being Problematic by doing this as she is also the main trans character, however: I am a trans girl and I can do what I want. In seriousness, it is a bit of wish-fulfilment for me--I wish I could be more butch and masc-styled and be read as "a handsome woman" and not "a man", so Vega's living that dream for me. She's a hunk you get it)

I will definitely still need some kind of custom visuals for Vega's henshin hero suit, and Nemea (and her boss, Princess Ascella) when she appears as an enemy.

3. Diversified the music! So a fun thing about RPGMaker is you think you know the small selection of default assets it gives you, but if you dig around in the installed files there's actually a lot more free assets you can transfer in--from walk sprites and portraits from older versions of RPGMaker, to a whole bunch of extra enemy graphics, to a lot more music. In particular, I found some pretty sweet battle themes so now each boss can have its own! (This all mixed in with something I already grabbed right when I started making this--a pack of specifically old toku style music, which is really great for making it feel appropriately flavoured.)

4. Added a town area! The overworld is pretty limited in this, it's not so much travel as using a small consistent hub/base to rest between dungeons (if sequels happen they'll probably be bigger but I'm trying to keep a lid on the minimum viable product scope ykno), but there are a couple additional areas, so...now we have that!

Got to have some fun populating it with cute characters, which was nice.

5. Started the second dungeon! My main goal this month was to finish the first one, so it's nice to be ahead of schedule.

I've also figured out some really fun gimmicks for this one, so the first dungeon will serve mostly as a backdrop while you're introduced to the game's core mechanics, then this one will step it up and be more showy in its own right. Figuring out stuff like "oh you can have specific enemy encounters only happen on certain regions of the map" and "oh you can totally hide one-off boss fights inside random encounters" has got me to a concept I'm real happy with.

So yeah, that's where the game's at right now! For May, my main goal is just to finish the second dungeon, but we'll see where that goes. I plan on making a prototype build to toss at some friends once I've done a pass on the third dungeon (the total plan is for five, plus a final area after), but the third one is very short so I might even be able to do that in May too. But no pressure if the second is all I manage, that's the goal.

My favorite ttrpg moment was from an old 7th sea game where we were rolling how everyone knew each other, and my character woke up married to another PC (when me and that player had JUST finished a campaign married to each other) but I was playing a lesbian and he was playing a gay man so the joke was they were so drunk that he thought I was a hunk (she was butch) and I thought he was a cute femme and I kept his family ring because I felt so betrayed when we woke up.
