Ghost Queen Sam with a Space Core AU!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My final coloring for the Green With Envy Event! Thanks @occasionally-intelligent for the line art!!!
Alt version and description below the cut:
Tumblr media
This bad boy is actually half digital, half tranditional! The background was done on a canvas with joint compound, sand, spray paint and acrylic, then color-shifted and enhanced with phone filters. Then Sam, herself, was done entirely digital, using overlain textures from the background!
It was a lot of fun to do and I'm really proud of this it! 😀
I've never done spray paint art before so it was a challenge. But I found some tutorials online and picked and chose techniques.
I made two versions because I wasn't sure which I liked better.

DannyMay Day 9/Day 12: Ghost King AU/Elements
“What is the Ghost King without his revitalizing Queen?”
Wasn’t going to participate in DannyMay but I changed my mind. This is a few days late tho, but who cares about time anyway, right? Also could this fit the theme of “Elements” as well? Since Sam is in her plant self here. I’m gonna say it does. Kill two birds with one stone.

Constellations Ch. 5
Prev. Chapter - Next Chapter - First Chapter
Chapter Titles include: *Captain America PSA voice* So you've witnessed your first ghost attack, Baby's first battle, What literally everyone has been waiting for, Guess Who? Ghost Edition, and Sam Judo flips Draco. Buckle in this is a long one folks.
(Notes: Just a reminder that Danny spent a whole summer with the Malfoy’s before GoF. As such, I didn't think it felt right if all of Draco’s interactions in the book were exactly the same. So there were definitely some changes through the year, including him not being as big of a jerk.
Danny made him think about things.
….He was still a jerk though.)
..........
A week after Danny left Malfoy Manor, Draco’s parents took him to the Quidditch World Cup.
It was thrilling, as it always was. His father had made sure they had top box seats, as the Minister's personal guests even, with a sizable donation to St. Mungo's.
But all Draco could think of was that it would be a lot more fun if Danny had been with him.
He could have talked to Danny about the tactics and strategies they were using in the game. About the differences between school and professional games.
Danny probably would have laughed at the mascots brought out and told him another wild story from his hometown.
He hadn't even noticed Potter and his friends till the minister was showing him off like a prized owl. Draco rolled his eyes and ignored them.
Maybe it was better Danny hadn't come. He'd be insisting to meet Draco's "arch enemy". He found Draco’s hatred of the Gryffindors comical.
The match and the whole trip back to the luxury temporary house his parents had commissioned weeks before, were nothing but a whirlwind Draco didn't quite remember. It had been a relief to escape into the charmed house, where none of the partying outside could be heard.
The next thing Draco knew, his mother was pulling him out of bed.
"Get up Draco." She ordered. "Dress quickly and follow me."
His mother was waiting by the door by the time he made it down the stairs. It was only opened an inch, but Draco could hear the screams and spell fire coming from outside.
His mother looked at him, her hand on the door. "I'm going to get Lucius. Wait for us just inside the tree line."
Draco felt like a rock had suddenly dropped in his stomach. "Where's Father?"
"Don't worry about that," she said softly. She leaned forward to cup his face. "Wait for us, and stay out of the way."
And Draco did as she asked. He followed the crowd, till he made it to the forest. From there he wandered just in the tree line till he found a hidden clearing with a view to the camp grounds.
His back hit a tree and he grabbed his elbows, slowly sliding to the forest floor, for once not caring about the leaves and dirt that would get all over his expensive robes. All he could think about was "What if Danny had come with?"
He wasn't stupid, he knew what was happening as he saw flashes of red and green and a family of muggles spinning above pointed wands. He knew exactly who was out there. A dark head flopped forward and Draco felt his stomach twist into knots.
That could have been his brother.
There was a part of Draco that always….knew this was how muggles and squib were treated by some wixen. It was a mindset he had always known, this is how muggles were supposed to be treated. It was what he was raised on.
And Danny….Danny was such a muggle. He never hid his upbringing, always going on about the things he did and how different it was in the wizarding world. He gladly called himself a squib, a defiant look in his eyes as if he was taking the almost slur and reclaiming it as something to be proud of.
That could've been Danny. But he's safe.
He's safe.
For the first time in his life, Draco hated being a pureblood.
He's safe.
Draco sat there against the tree with the words thudding in ears as the sounds of the battle grew fainter and fainter. He was absolutely lost in his head till Weasley tripped over his big feet and landed in front of him.
And he couldn't stop himself from replying back, followed by Weasley swearing at him vulgarly.
Potter and Granger were right behind him. Granger had crossed her arms and frowned at him, while Potter seemed to gear up for a fight.
He's safe.
Normally, Draco would be all too willing to knock Potter’s ego down a couple of notches. But he was just….not feeling it that night.
(It had absolutely nothing to do with how-for a moment- Draco saw someone else standing in Potter’s place. And nothing to do with the fleeting thought that if Danny had been with him-)
He's safe.
He's safe.
He's safe.
"You should go, Potter." Draco muttered turning away from the stupid trio, "You wouldn't want to find out what they do to muggleborns."
They snipped at him some more before walking away, Weasley giving him one last unreadable look before they were out of sight.
(“Did either of you notice something….off about him?”
“Yeah. He didn’t insult us or try to fight Harry.”
“Well, yes but....he didn’t call me a Mudblood.”
“....Okay that is weird. Heh, who knows? Maybe he grew a conscious over the summer. That’d take a miracle though.”
“Who cares, it’s still Malfoy. He’s still a prat.”
“Oh yeah, definitely.”)
"He's safe." Draco reminded himself, as the last of the screaming faded from earshot.
….
CRASH
Draco whipped around, wand already in his hand. Danny caught his wrist and shoved it down.
"Dude I thought you were trying to keep the wizard thing on the down low."
"What?!" Draco shrieked, "We're being attacked!"
"Yeah I know, we were just talking about this a second ago."
"I believe you called it an 'illogical paranoia'." Sam drawled.
"We just call that Monday!" Tucker added brightly.
"And any other day that ends in 'Y'." She said.
Tucker finger gunned and clicked his tongue in agreement. Draco looked at them in disbelief. And then he noticed everyone else.
During the Death Eater attack at the World Cup, everyone had been running and screaming. Either away from, or towards the chaos.
Draco could still hear smashing sounds, faint screams, and the occasional cackling coming from the other side of the block, but it was….muted, half-hearted.
Many of the others on the street seemed more annoyed than anything. Checking their phones and either turning in a different direction, or stopping on the side walks to complain about their way home being blocked off for the next hour and, "I've got laundry to do Kathy, my washing machine had better be fine or I'm gonna riot."
(There were maybe one or two others, seeming to experience about the same amount of scared/confused anxiety he was experiencing. They were either being laughed at or sent pitying glances and Draco suddenly remembered being called an outsider multiple times. He thinks he is finally starting to understand what they mean.
He does not like it.)
Sam dropped her backpack, pulled out a book, and settled on the curbside.
He gave a what-are-doing-and-why-are-we-not-running-away gesture that she luckily understood.
"If we freaked out about a ghost every time one attacked we'd never get anything done." Sam rolled her eyes, "People in the blast zone get out. We stay here, out of the way. Everyone else goes about their business and plans around the attack."
Draco turned to Danny to talk some sense into him, or forcibly drag him away from the concerning crashing sounds, and about had a heart attack when he couldn't see him anywhere.
Panicked, he turned back to Sam and asked, "Where's Danny?!"
She didn't even bother looking at him before deadpanning, "Bathroom."
He wasn't sure what kind of face he made at her, but she rolled her eyes at him and shut her book. "Relax Draco, this happens all the time."
He scowled at her, "I'm going to go find him."
"By the Ancients, you're as bad as Danny." She groaned into her book before leaping up and going after him. "Seriously Draco, you're not gonna find him. You're only going to get yourself hurt!"
She darted in front of him, spreading her arms out as if that would actually stop him. He tried to move her out of the way, she grabbed his wrist, and the next thing he knew he was on his back trying to get all the breath that had been knocked out of him back into his lungs.
Sam leaned over him. "We need. To stay. Here. Where Danny and Tucker can find us when they get back. If I have to knock you out to keep you safe then I will. I promised Danny I'd look after you, despite how much I want to throw you to the wolves and leave you to fend for yourself."
"What is your problem?!" Draco spit out as he sat up.
"You." She said bluntly, "And everything you and your family stand for. You're everything I hate in a person. An elitist, classist, racist, bullying coward who'd rather run away or hide behind daddy's money than actually face his problems."
She squatted down to look him in the eye, "I have been surrounded by you old blood money types since before I was born. I know the type. I have walked those gilded paths, danced those marble halls, and been fed those silver spoons. I've been in your shoes before and I despised who I saw in the mirror."
Sam let out a breath, "But Danny vouches for you, and I trust Danny. He sees so much good in everyone, and I've seen people abuse that time and time again. Including rich assholes. Don't be the reason he gets hurt again or I'll do more than knock you out of breath."
She stood back up and held her hand out to help him up. He stared at her for a moment, before grimacing and accepting the hand. "I have no intention of hurting him."
"You'd be surprised at the amount of people that hurt him despite intentions." She muttered darkly. "You getting hurt would hurt Danny. Please stay away from ghost fights."
As soon as she said that, a black and white blur shot past them and crashed into a parked car. An audible groan echoed across the quickly clearing street.
You see, while Draco was distracted by Sam, Danny had dragged Tucker to the nearby alley and threw himself in the dumpster.
"There are so many ways I could make fun of you for this," Tucker said as a flash of light came from the cracks in the dumpster, "But I'm just too shocked at you showing even the slightest hint of caution regarding your secret identity."
Phantom phased his head out of the top, "What are you talking about? I'm always careful!"
"Me and Sam have a running bet on how long it takes before you blow your secret in front of Draco, Mister stands-on-top-of-the-nearest-available-surface-and-shouts-his-catchphrase."
Phantom crossed his arms as he floated out of the dumpster. "Okay there is no way I'm that bad."
Tucker gave him a flat look. "Just yesterday you threw yourself out of Vlad's office window, and transformed on the way down. Leapt off the picnic table at lunch, while shouting your catchphrase, in the middle of lunch. Oh also when we were just walking down the street and you jumped on a car, ran across it, and then threw yourself off with a fancy flip while transforming mid air."
Phantom floated there with a sheepish look.
"Yeah I'm honestly baffled you even have a secret identity still. You're as good at being discreet as you are dodging."
"I can dodge," Phantom muttered as he picked up Tucker and flew them through the building to get to the fight.
The universe decided to prove Tucker's point by sending several floppy disks directly into Phantom's face as soon as he appeared on the other side of the building.
They both yelped, Tucker throwing his arms and legs around Phantom before he could be dropped on the pavement several stories below.
"You suck!" Tucker hissed into Phantom's collarbone.
Phantom narrowed his eyes before abruptly turning intangible right above a car with a convenient mattress strapped to the top.
Tucker screamed at the sudden free fall, and then screamed obscenities at Phantom once he stopped bouncing.
Phantom cracked his knuckles, "All right now who's-oh great."
"I am TECHNUS! Maniacal master of the mechanical! Wizard of the interior circuitry, and RULER of the ELECTRICAL GRID!"
"Is that a new speech?" Tucker asked the ghost.
"It is! Thank you for noticing, Ghost Child's more technologically inclined friend!"
"It's an improvement! I liked the maniacal master part." Tucker gave Technus a thumbs up, before settling down on the car mattress to absolutely destroy him digitally.
Technus had already made a three armed, three legged mech suit from what looked to be just desktop computers and their various accessories. Which was weird because he usually just ripped anything vaguely tech powered from the vicinity.
(Many college students with finals coming up were grabbing their weaponry to fight for their papers, or drowning their sorrows in the nearest, cheapest liquid. They all had backups upon backups stashed around Amity and Elmore of course, this wasn't the first time Technus attacked near finals. But it was the principal of the matter and they'd rather just beat a ghost for their laptop back, rather than go through the 20 step process of recovering their work.)
The monitors made up his main body, his digital face shining out of each individual one giving him a vaguely eldritch look with all the eyes and cackling mouths. The towers made up the bulk of the limbs, with those old Webcams making up the joints. The keyboards came together to form four pronged claws on the three arms and the whole thing was wrapped in the various cords and mouses to hold it together. It was 3 stories tall and crackling with electricity at the plug-in prongs.
"I see you've decided to go with the Electronics Section from Goodwill look!" Phantom quipped as he shot forward slamming his feet into one of the arm joints and knocking it to the ground. "So what's the evil plan for today, and can we hurry up? I have stuff to do."
"That stuff is meeting your demise!" Technus yelled as he caught Phantom and threw him into one of the buildings. "For I have a new secret weapon!" The cords reached out from the stump Phantom had just made and reattached the arm back in place.
Phantom shook his head free of rubble, before flying back up, fists glowing with ecto energy. "Oh I'm sure it's a blast!" He said, shooting ectoblasts at the various monitors.
He heard Tucker booing from the ground, "You need new jokes!"
Technus laughed wildly as he swiped at Phantom like a pesky bug, "Behold! I will control the social media platforms of the internet! I will be THE hippest thing since The Beatles!"
Phantom paused his attack to stare at him, "Dude how old are you?"
"IRRELEVANT!" Technus shouted as he slammed a hand down on Phantom, shoving him down into the road. "You cannot stop me, Ghost Child! Not once I use the power of MYSPACE!!"
Phantom grunted, legs and arms bracing against the cobbled together claw to keep the sparking plugs away from his face as they tried to zap him. "You have gotta be kidding me."
Tucker shook his head, "Dude you are so OUTDATED!"
"WHAT?!?!" Technus screeched. Phantom used Tucker's distraction to go intangible into the ground, before popping back up next to a furiously typing Tucker.
"Not to sound ungrateful but could you hurry it up a little?" Phantom hissed.
"You could give me a hand. Oh wait, you stink at firewalls." Tucker shot back, eyes not leaving the screen. Phantom made a strangled sound and Tucker looked up to see him wrapped in various colored cords trying to choke him.
"Sor-ry," Phantom gasped, "L'il….tied up."
Technus yanked him back and twirled him like a lasso, before launching him through a house leaving Phantom shaped holes in the walls.
"Ouch." Tucker winced, "Don't think the pun deserved that."
Technus cackled his mad scientist cackle and took off in the direction he just yeeted Phantom.
Tucker slid off the car and started jogging after them. With his eyes on his PDA, he almost tripped over Sam and Draco when he made it to the other street.
Draco was staring open-mouthed at the Phantom shaped lump currently pulling himself out of a car.
"Dude, MY CAR!" A guy wailed from his apartment window.
Phantom floated upwards, rubbing the back of his head, an annoyed look on his face, "Bill it to the mayor."
Phantom dodged the floppy disks, and keyboard button projectiles Technus started shooting at him.
Tucker yelped and dived behind a mailbox to avoid the collateral. Sam pulled Draco to the ground behind one of the parked cars as Draco pulled out his wand and casted a quick protego.
Sam didn't blink at the magic. Draco though, was definitely freaking out about whatever was happening.
"What are those things?!"
She gave him a look full of disbelief, "They're ghosts."
"Those are not ghosts!!!" Draco protested rather shrilly, giving a very good impression of Pamela Manson at the last PTA meeting.
Unfortunately, this impression also attracted the attention of Technus. "You must be new!"
The giant mech dropped down on the car Draco and Sam were hiding behind. Sam swore as glass scattered the ground, and tried tugging Draco away from the possessed tech. The mech leaned over the two teens, Draco’s wand shaking in his hands as he casted stupefy.
The magic bounced harmlessly off the tech and Technus let out a delighted laugh. "A little witchling! It's been ages since I've seen one of your kind! Wait-."
The mech leaned forward and Sam hissed, kicking the screens with her combat boots. She shoved Draco behind her and pulled up her fists in a fighting pose. “Back off you Matrix knockoff!”
All of Technus’s screens focused on Draco, sending a shiver down his spine as the red eyes shined through the glass. “Your new friend looks so familiar! Have they ever been on TV?”
“I don't even know what that is.” Draco said from behind Sam.
That apparently shocked the tech ghost enough that he physically reared back in surprise. This gave Phantom the opening needed to grab an arm and yank him further back, dragging the mech several meters across the street.
“Memory problems?” Phantom yanked him one more time, before launching himself towards the main screens, “Maybe you just need a reboot!”
Technus screeched as Phantom landed the hit, static warping his voice as several of the screens broke, sending more glass down onto the street. Draco cast another protego to keep the worst of it from them as Sam pulled him further down the street and away from the….creatures fighting. Sam grabbed her backpack as the two of them ran to where Tucker was huddled behind the blue mailbox, tapping furiously at his PDA.
Draco ripped his arm away from Sam’s grip, again, and kept his wand up as he watched the fight in disbelief. He yelled in shock as lightning struck the ground near to where they were.
There was a giant crash, more staticky screeching, and then a black and white blur shot towards them. A freezing arm wrapped around his and Sam’s waist, and Draco shrieked in terror as they were suddenly flying fast as a broomstick into the air. He didn’t have time to attack the creature before the two of them were dropped on a nearby rooftop.
Draco sat on the roof, eyes wide as he got a good look at the human looking creature claiming to be a ghost.
He could feel the waves of cold pulsing from the slightly glowing figure, the only thing Draco could recognize as ghostly. A black and white suit made of unrecognizable material, snow white hair floated in a nonexistent breeze. Their eyes were as vibrant green as the killing curse and Draco’s mouth went dry.
This was not a ghost. It couldn't be.
“You’ll be safe here.” They said, legs no longer below the waist and just a silver wisp of a tail, whipping back and forth in agitation.
Then they were gone, leaving Draco sitting on a roof with shaky legs and a head full of questions.
Phantom shot towards Technus once again, eyes and fists glowing a furious ice blue, “Ever had your Windows freeze on you?” He froze the ground around the legs, the ice trapping Technus in that one spot.
Technus tried tugging the leg out, but the ice held. “Foolish child! This cannot stop me! Nothing will prevent me from taking over the MySpace!”
Tucker came running up to Phantom, something small clutched in his hands, “Danny! Catch!”
He chucked the small black rectangle towards the hero. Phantom swooped down and grabbed it. He held up the USB and grinned. “You’re the best Tuck. Go help Sam keep an eye on Drake.”
Tucker gave a two finger salute and took off towards the fire escape.
Technus pulsed with electricity, weakening the ice enough to break free, before charging at Phantom and swatting him into the road. Phantom grunted in pain, but shot at the joint of the claw with an ectoblast and wrenched it off. He twisted around the cords that shot out towards him before landing on the biggest screen, his fingers clutching onto the edge.
“You have any tissues?” Danny asked with a wide grin.
“What?" Technus sounded flabbergasted at the non sequitur, "Why would I need tissues?”
“Don’t you know?” Phantom held up the USB, “There’s a virus going around!”
And then he jammed it between Technus’s digital eyes.
The thing about Technus, is that when he possesses tech, it becomes ridiculously malleable. It’s why he’s able to surround himself with giant robot suits built entirely out of the useless junk from your garage. It also means that any new tech can just automatically absorb into the amalgamation, no need to search for usable ports.
Technus screeched that staticky screech once again, the noise suddenly turning to the dread inducing dial up noise as all the screen went blue one by one. As soon as the last screen went blue, all of the tech shut down. The mech suit collapsed into its original parts and Technus was forced out, spinning head over heels in the air.
Technus held his head, clearly dizzy, and sneezed three times in a row. Phantom uncapped the thermos and pointed it at him, “I recommend a few weeks of bed rest.” And then he sucked Technus in as the ghost sneezed his objections.
Phantom let out a sigh as he capped it, wincing at property damage left from this fight. “Vlad is going to take this out on me for sure.”
He caught sight of Sam, Tucker, and Draco on the fire escape of the building and panicked for a moment before diving into the adjacent dark alley and straight into the dumpster once again.
He was getting really good at recognizing familiar dumpsters.
Danny winced as the bruises started making themselves known, twinging with the movement of Danny throwing the lid open to crawl out. Looking up, he saw Draco’s perturbed face.
The two of them stared at each other for a moment.
“So!” Danny said, putting on his best Captain America PSA voice, “You witnessed your first ghost attack.”
“You’re in a dumpster.” Draco said in disgust.
Something squished underneath Danny’s shoes as he shifted his weight and he winced, “Uh, yeah.”
He gripped the lip of the dumpster and pulled himself up. His ribs immediately protested and he winced. This made his hand slip onto an unknown slippery substance, causing him to lose his grip and he flipped over and landed flat on the pavement.
“Ohhhh, that’s gonna bruise,” Danny wheezed to himself.
Tucker laughed at him. Sam rolled her eyes. Draco looked like he wanted to help Danny up, but he was not gonna touch Danny after being in the dumpster.
Draco pulled out his wand and casted the single cleaning spell he knew to rid Danny of any dumpster juices he acquired.
"Thanks Drake," Danny said as he stood up, "But aren't you gonna get in trouble for using so much magic around non-magicals?"
Draco narrowed his eyes, "I'm sure it could be excused after…..whatever that was. You said it was safe here." He accused him quietly.
Sam and Tucker suddenly looked like they'd rather be anywhere else but there.
Danny winced at them before dragging Draco deeper into the alley, Sam and Tucker taking up spots on the corners to play lookout and stay out of the twin's talk.
"It is safe here." Danny said.
"That was not safe!!!" Draco hissed, waving his arms much like Wes did when you got him going on a good rant. "That!? We were being attacked by those-those….those creatures!!"
"Ghosts." Danny snapped, "I've been telling you for over a year! And only one of them attacked us! Phantom was trying to stop him!"
"Ghosts don't look like that!" Draco stressed, "They're pale echoes leftover from life! They're grey and can't touch anything and they can't-they can't do things like grab me!"
Draco wasn't going to admit that that was what had scared him more than anything. Ghosts had always been non-threatening to him, save for whatever gossip they could overhear and their ability to spy through solid walls. But ultimately, they couldn't touch him, so they couldn't hurt him.
(Peeves did not count. He was an incorrigible prankster that manipulated his surroundings, rather than interacting directly with humans. A nuisance, much like getting some gum stuck on the bottom of your shoe.)
Danny huffed out a breath, "Drake, did it ever occur to you that there were different types of ghosts?"
Draco sneered at him, "I know that, probably better than whatever muggle nonsense has been shoved in your head."
Danny had to turn around and count to ten because he was pretty sure he would've flashed his eyes at Draco. He pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Ghosts are a wizard thing Danny." Draco said, less antagonistic.
"They're really not." Danny rolled his eyes and looked back at his brother. "Look, just because we don't have magic, doesn't mean we don't still see it."
"But wizards-"
"Can't erase everything magical. There's too many humans, too many animals, too much history to just….blank it out."
Danny blew out a breath. "Amity is….weird. It's always been weird, it's one of the reasons Mom and Dad settled here. From what they could find out, it's like ley line central and surrounded by crossroads and full of ambient ectoplasm, which makes it the perfect weak point for ghosts to cross between realms. And ever since they made that portal…."
Danny remembers growing up in Amity pre-Accident. Shadows were always darker than other places. Whispers in places no one was. The town library had an entire wing dedicated to rituals and summonings, and the constant urban legends that sprung up at the slightest hint of the paranormal.
(Sydney Pointdexter's haunted locker legend had been going for over 70 years. Danny didn't hear about it only because whenever he or Jazz heard the word 'haunted' they immediately tuned the person out. It was a side effect of years of being subjected to their parent's lectures on ghosts. He loves them but there's only so much he can take in at a time.)
Amity Park had always had its roots in the dark, creepy, and dead. The 'Nice Place to Live' sign had always been an inside joke to the town, which supported the highest number of abandoned warehouses, cults, and ghost sightings in America.
Opening the portal and solidifying the bridge between the two realms just allowed Amity Park to fully showcase just how weird they can get.
And get the tourist money for being weird.
"Look can you just-" Danny ran his hands through his hair. "Can you just trust that we know what we're doing? We've been dealing with the ghosts for over a year now. Wizards aren't here dealing with this, we are. Just cause we don't have magic doesn't mean we're helpless."
Draco stared at him, and Danny could see how tense he was. And Danny wondered yet again just what had happened while they were separated that was making Draco this scared.
Draco clenched his jaw as his eyes flitted around the alley. "You'll explain things to me. Properly." He demanded, rather than asked like a normal person would.
Danny looked at him, "If you do the same, yeah."
Draco nodded. "Yes. Fine."
"Alright, good."
The two of them stared at each other awkwardly for a moment. Danny finally let out a sigh, turning to walk out of the alley. "Okay, let's head home."

I think if Dean just got to go to a gay bar once it would fix him. I think he'd see his first drag show, going in with the attitude of "whatever, it's just for a case/friend/etc, I'm not gay or anything. it doesn't mean anything" and then he'd end up front row damn near getting a lap dance and it would be over for him. he'd show up back at the motel or something and sam would look at him and ask what's up because dean looks like what most people would look like after seeing the face of god or something, complete reverence, and then he's like "sammy i think I'm into dudes" like it's a big revelation

You’d known Dean all your life, practically. You met him when you were six and he was eight; two lonely little kids stuck with absent (job-driven) fathers and baby brothers you felt responsible for. Over the course of the last eighteen-or-so years you ran into the Winchesters during hunts enough that you considered them family.
When Sam left for college you were there for Dean and when you lost your dad in a hunting accident Dean was there for you. He actually stayed with you, not wanting you to hunt alone since your brother was off at college too.
So, for the last six months you’d been hunting with Dean (who hadn’t spoken to Sam for over a year).
“One room, two queens,” Dean said to the woman behind the counter, placing “his” credit card on the space between them before sliding it toward her.
“We’re all booked up I’m afraid,” she said.
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, I was actually about to turn on the no vacancy sign.”
“This is the third motel we’ve been to,” you said, “every one of them has been full—you’ve gotta have something!”
“I mean, there’s technically one room left but the heater’s out and my boss said not to let anyone sleep there because of that.”
There was a silent pause; you and Dean shared a knowing look.
“We’ll pay in cash, your boss ‘ll never know,” you told the woman. She smiled and nodded as you paid her with cash.
“Room 209, my boss gets here at ten tomorrow morning so please leave before then.” She handed you the key and you nodded in thanks.
You had underestimated just how cold the room could be, but when you unlocked and opened the door you understood why the owner didn’t want anyone staying here.
“Son of a bitch,” Dean mumbled, following you into the room and feeling the cold air. “We’re gonna freeze our asses off in here!” he quickly closed the door behind him, hoping the icy air hadn’t swept any snow into the room.
“It’s either this or we sleep in the Impala,” you shrugged, “and, no offense to your car, but it’s fuckin’ uncomfortable to sleep in.”
“And there’s only one bed,” Dean sighed.
“I’m gonna take a quick shower,” you told him, ignoring his complaints.
**
“Are you shivering or crying?” Dean asked.
You rolled over so you could meet his stare; “Shivering! It’s fuckin’ cold in here!”
“You wanna…cuddle up, maybe?” he asked hesitantly.
“Excuse me?” you laughed a little.
“Look, I’m not thrilled about it either, but it’s cold in here and unless we both wanna catch fucking pneumonia we better be smart and share body heat.”
You sighed, weighing your options; “Fine. But we never, and I mean never speak of this again, you hear me?”
“Understood.” He nodded.
You rolled back over as he scooted closer to you. He wrapped his arms around your waist from behind, pulling you into his chest.
“This okay?” he asked quietly, his lips ghosting the back of your head.
“Yeah,” you mumbled back. “Thank you, Dean.”
**
You woke up to the sound of Dean snoring loudly. You were used to his snores, sure, but he’d never been this close. He was laying on his stomach and resting on your chest; his mouth open and his hair tickling your neck. Your first reaction was annoyance but then it quickly washed away as you realized you didn’t want to move a muscle, so Dean could continue sleeping.
And the more you laid there, listening to his snores, the more you realized how comfortable you were…even in such a physically uncomfortable situation.
As the time passed and the sun began to rise, you cursed the light that was slowly but surely peeking through the curtain and onto Dean’s face.
“Morning,” he mumbled to you as he lifted his head up. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his right hand before wiping his mouth. “Sorry,” he chuckled, noticing the small spot on your gray sweater dampened with his drool.
“It’s okay,” you mumbled back. “I think it’s your sweater anyway.”
“I thought it looked familiar.”
He rolled off of you and out of bed.
You watched as he padded across the dirty carpet and over to the small kitchen. He turned on the coffee maker and the loud, off putting grinding noise made his face scrunch before he quickly shut off the (definitely broken) machine.
“So much for coffee,” he grumbled. “You gonna sit there all morning or you wanna get outta here? We’ve got a long drive ahead of us.”
“I’m getting up,” you replied. You would usually be annoyed at him for rushing you to wake up, but this time the annoyance was…different. Something about his bedhead, the way his lips were pouting over the lack of caffeine, and how he looked in his brown Henley and baggy sweats just made you wanna hold him again. All you wanted was to pull him back into bed with you and hold him in your arms forever.
**
You were beyond frustrated at this point. How many stupid fucking hotels had to have vacant rooms with two beds and a functional heating system!?
It had been nearly six months since you and Dean shared a bed and you had been looking for an excuse to sleep next to him ever since.
But the last couple weeks had been different—Sammy was back. Yes, you loved Sam like a brother, but you missed getting to be alone with Dean. You missed sitting shotgun in the Impala and watching him drive.
Sam definitely noticed the way you looked at Dean, but the younger Winchester didn’t say a word. Without being too obvious about it, he tried to do little things that would let you be close to his brother. He’d sit in a certain chair or part of the couch so that you and Dean had no choice but to sit together. Or he’d make some lame excuse so that he got his own room while you and Dean had to share. “I need to do some more research and I need the light, why don’t you two just sleep in the other room?” for example.
**
“Two rooms, please,” Dean said, reaching into his coat pocket for his wallet.
“Unfortunately we’ve only got one room left,” the cashier replied.
You almost couldn’t believe your ears, fucking finally!
“Oh, that’s too bad,” you faked your best frustrated look, of course Sam saw right through that.
“Well, I am not sharing with either or you,” he said with a teasing smile.
“There’s actually a pullout couch in that room, as luck would have it,” the cashier informed the three of you.
God fucking damn it, you thought to yourself.
**
It was barely after two when you felt the bed behind you dip, and you shook yourself awake.
“The hell?” you asked, still half asleep.
“The pullout couch isn’t working,” Dean mumbled quietly. “You mind sharing with me?”
You smiled a little and scooted closer into his arms, indicating you were okay with him sleeping next to you.
“Of course I don’t mind sharing with you,” you whispered and his grip tightened.
**
“I’m gonna go get breakfast,” Sam announced. “I’m assuming you want your usual?”
Dean put his right pointer finger to his lips and furrowed his brows angrily. He gestured to you as you slept and Sam got the message.
“Usual is good,” Dean whispered before Sam left.
Dean stayed laying perfectly still as you slept on his chest, soft snores escaping your lips and to Dean they were the sweetest sound.
As you stirred awake slowly, he rubbed your back a little.
“Morning,” you mumbled, a small smile on your lips. “Where’s Sam?”
“He went to grab breakfast,” Dean told you.
You furrowed your brows as you sat up, looked across the room, and realized something; “The pullout bed looks fine? I thought you said it wasn’t working?” You turned back to Dean, who had a sheepish grin growing on his lips.
“So…maybe I’ve just been looking for an excuse to sleep next to you again. Like we did back in that motel when the heat was out.”
“Really?” You attempted to hide the smile trying to find its way onto your face.
“When we were checking in last night I noticed how your face lit up when they said there was only one room left,” Dean admitted. “And I saw that disappointed look you made when they said there was a pullout couch. So, am I wrong, or have you been wanting an excuse too?”
“I really liked sleeping next to you that night,” you said, avoiding eye contact. “And you’re right, I have been hoping for another ‘oh no just one bed, guess we’ll have to share’ situation but…”
“But what?” Dean asked when you trailed off. You looked down at him.
“Dean, you and Sam have been like my brothers for as long as I can remember. I mean, Bobby practically raised all three of us and my actual brother as siblings! Your dad and my dad knew each other basically forever and I guess…I guess I figured our lives are too entangled for anything to ever actually happen between us. We’re family.”
“Chosen family, Y/n.” Dean smiled softly. “Doesn’t mean you have to be my chosen sister, you could be my chosen…you know…”
You leaned down and placed a soft kiss on his full lips.
“That,” Dean finished his previous statement.
“Let’s just keep this between us for now, okay?” you suggested. “If Sam finds out, then your dad will find out, and he’ll immediately tell my brother, then before we know it Bobby—”
“I get the picture, sweetheart,” Dean chuckled before kissing you again. He put his hands on your cheeks as he sat up. He pulled you onto his lap, your legs now straddling his hips. His hands moved to your shoulders then trailed down to your lower back as yours went into his hair. You pulled away from him after a moment, huge smiles on both your faces.
You looked into his eyes, his truly beautiful eyes, and you bit your bottom lip ever so slightly. Your right hand rested on his left cheek, your thumb stroking his skin lovingly.
“You’re awesome, Dean Winchester,” you whispered.
“You’re fuckin’ incredible,” he replied before he kissed you again. “And gorgeous, too,” he added. “You know how fuckin’ annoying it’s been, sleeping without you every night since that one time?”
“I do know, Dean, I’ve been just as annoyed about it.”
Dean kissed you one more time before he wrapped his arms around you in a tight embrace, tucking his head into your neck. You wrapped your arms around him too, pressing your lips to his temple.
You pulled out of the hug so you could once again look at his face. Resting your forehead on his, you smiled before you kissed him again.
“Breakfast,” Sam called out as he opened the door, “is served!”
You and Dean froze for a split second before you hurried off of him.
“Shit, I’m sorry,” Sam said, “did I interrupt you two?”
“What?” you scoffed. “Of course not!”
“Interrupt? There’s nothing to interrupt?” Dean added.
“Oh…wow you two are fast,” Sam mumbled, shaking his head as he made his way to the kitchen before putting the food down. “Well, pancakes, eggs, and bacon from the continental breakfast.” He gestured to the food now on the table. “Hope you’re hungry.”
As Sam sat down to eat, you looked at Dean anxiously. Say something you begged him with your eyes.
“Sammy,” Dean started as he got out of bed, “would you mind uh…not telling dad? About me and Y/n…kissing just now? When we find him, I mean.”
“Dad’s never really been invested in your love life, but he’s not an idiot,” Sam laughed.
“So…you are gonna tell him?” Dean furrowed his brows in frustration.
“Dean, he knows you two are together, it’s not some big secret?” Sam replied, shoveling more food into his mouth. “Damn that’s good.”
“Okay, just hold on—what?” Dean asked. “What do you mean dad knows? There’s been nothing to know since like four minutes ago?”
“Wait,” Sam stopped eating and fully turned to face you and his brother, “are you trying to tell me this is the first time you two have kissed?” Sam furrowed his brows deeply as you and Dean both nodded. “So…never in high school?” You shook your heads again. “That prom we crashed?”
“Sam you were there the whole time? When would we have kissed?” you asked.
“Huh,” Sam let out a laugh. “I genuinely thought you two had been a thing since like… ‘98.”
“What!?” you and Dean exclaimed in unison.

Get in the Water AU: Original Post Ruthlessness
Ghosts were physiologically different from humans.
It was something Tucker and Sam didn't understand. They saw Phantom as "Danny with superpowers," not as a fundamentally different being.
Sometimes, Danny didn't understand either.
But his parents did. Utter disregard for the scientific method aside, the Fentons were the ones who learned how inhuman ghosts were: "Just emotions and electricity imprinted on ectoplasm, Danno, nothing to be scared of!" Snapshots of people at the moments of their deaths. The past and the present, incapable of contemplating the future.
And with his duality, Danny struggled to understand either of his halves.
As a human, Danny could move past his nightmare of a childhood, compartmentalize and think to the future, when he was fully healed and his past couldn't hurt him anymore. So when Dora, first elected Queen of the Infinite Realms - long may she reign - asked him to collect all the resurrected humans for a health check and assessment... when he'd noticed Damian Al Ghul-Wanye on the list... He'd thought up a little prank to pull on his long-lost brother. A cruel one, perhaps, but nothing harmful.
As a ghost, Danny couldn't move on. He could never forget that Sam led him to his death, that his parents negligence allowed for the stage to be set, that the lab they loved so much held both his home and his grave. Just as Danny would always be that fourteen year old, caught in that moments, he was still the 7-year-old Danyal Al Ghul who trusted his brother not to hurt him... and ended up poisoned.
Phantom wanted his murderer to suffer.
And Danny, much to his shame, had allowed it.
For a few weeks, Danny managed to ignore it. He'd gone after Damian first, so there were tons of resurrected on his list. He started with the more extreme cases first, like Constantine, but soon enough the next on his list was Ra's Al Ghul.
He'd asked Queen Dora to send someone else, anyone else. That he wouldn't be able to control himself if he saw his grandfather again. Instead of relieving him, she'd given him a knowing look and told him to follow his core's desire.
She never mentions it, but Queen Dora had been a murder victim too.
There was no showmanship, no dramatic reveal. Just Danyal, his grandfather, and the Pit.
Despite all Ra's Al Ghul's power, he was no match for a spirit hellbent on drowning him.
That's what Danny did to his grandfather. He'd thrown up afterwards, once he was human before. But the ghost in him relished the act; he could still feel Grandfather's throat under his hands, pulse fluttering against his palm as Danyal held him down. He struggled and shook as the Lazarus waters filled his lungs, burning away healthy tissue. Fingernails morphed into claws that sliced through the tender skin, blood leaking into the water, and water leaking into the blood.
It took a long time for Grandfather to die. Deep within Danny, next to his core, he knew it was what was deserved. That the murdered finally had justice. He was content with never speaking of it again, a secret between him and the waters.
And now it was going to happen again as Phantom's impulsive mind overtook Fenton's tactical one.
He'd known Damian was looking into him. Knew another confrontation was inevitable, what with two more of his siblings needing their health checks. But as Danny was stalking their mother, searching for the best way to abduct her (she was still his mother after all, he didn't want her dead... yet), Damian and his family confronted her.
Relief washed over him as only a normal amount of rage bubbled up at the sight of Damian, instead of the overwhelming, all-consuming fury he'd felt. Danny laughed at their arguments, at Constantine thinking he could put a living ghost to rest, at his siblings-unmet and his father-unknown, until...
Damian confessed.
His murderer confessed, yet as he continued to speak, to explain, the fury rose in him again. Because it wasn't a betrayal. He'd always thought Damian betrayed him, but no.
Through his own ruthlessness, Damian gave him the only mercy he could manage. And there was only one thing Danyal wanted now.
""̸̲̈́T̶͘͜ä̵̢li̸a̶̬̓ ̴̬̐A̵̛̪l̸̲̚ G̸̛̫h̶̺̏u̸̢̚l!̴̳̈́ D̷̩̕o̸͛ͅ ̶̝̍y̴͙͘o̵̙͐u̵̬̓ ̴̤͂k̸̡̑n̵͓̈́o̷͈͝w̷͖͂ ̷͓͑w̴̧̄h̵̲͌o̴̮̔ ̵̼́Ị̷̂ ̷̣̽a̵̳̓m̷̩̓?̷̝͒"̷̧͠"
It was her fault. She was the reason why he was dead, nothing more than a coward who couldn't go against her father for the sake of her children. She abused them, she struck his brother, it was her fault-
"Danyal," she answered. And Danyal grinned, fanged and sharp.
He approached, the waters of his birthplace lovingly brushing against his legs, consoling him the only way they knew how. They whispered revenge into his ears, madness into his heart, just as they had when he'd confronted Damian, when he murdered Grandfather. "You have much to answer for, daughter of the Demon Head," he said, voice echoing around the room.
Unrestrained greed filled her gaze. "You've returned to me, my son."
Danyal laughed, brutal and rough. "I've returned for you, Mother," he corrected. "Don't think this reunion will end well for you."
"You mean to hurt me, Danyal?" she crooned, all false hurt and fake love.
"I mean to kill you."
Genuine anger flashed across her face. "My son would never-"
"Y̵̺̆o̴̩͂u̸͉̕r̷̰͝ ̴͔͝s̵̡̉o̶̡̎ň̵̞ ̶̗̈i̴̘̍s ̸̦̐d̴̯̚ê̶͚á̶̩d̷̻̈́," he snarled, and Damian flinched. He was too close to Talia. "You wanted me dead... for being weak. For having mercy." He stared up at his mother's shocked form. "I killed Grandfather. Tell me, is that ruthless enough for you, Umi?" Talia flinched with just her eyes. He hadn't been allowed to call her Umi since he was three.
Their father stepped forward, the naked distress on his face contrasting with his battle armor. "Danyal," he plead. "You don't have to do this-"
"Stay out of this, Baba." The man's breathing hitched. "This doesn't involve you."
Constantine tried to talk him down next. "It does, kid. A Siren on your level can't stay around for long. It's time for you to rest."
Danyal threw back his head and laughed. "As if you could stop me, exorcist." No more delays. It's time for action. "I will drown you all before you can."
Danyal lunged. And despite his mother's decades as an assassin, she couldn't kill what was already dead.
He held her down by the throat, the attacks from Damian's family bouncing off him. "This is mercy," he cooed as she desperately clawed at his hands. "For me. For Damian. For everyone you will try to hurt in the future. Ruthlessness is the only mercy I can give you now." Her face turned red as she gaped for air and Danyal-
Was thrown back into the water.
Reorienting himself, he found John Constantine standing over his mother, protecting her from him. "̷̪͂E̷̺͐x̷̝̑ŏ̶̺ȑ̴͉c̷̟͘i̸͔̋s̶̮̀t̶̯͝."
And the Pit's water began to rise.

Okay, so I’m a fan of Brain Dead - these two overworked boys who need hugs, melatonin, and to sleep in a comfortable pillow fort while wrapped in soft blankets like burritos (bonus points if it’s actual tortilla-pattern blankets) - and I’m also a fan of petty revenge like -
Tim accidentally getting married to Ghost King Danny because Red Robin got captured and used as a sacrifice by a cult to summon the Ghost King to reign destruction but mishap someone forgot to read up on their runes so the “sacrifice” was actually a “sacrificial bride”, meaning magical contract between GK!Danny and Tim.
And Danny, when he gets summoned and realizes what happened, is like, nope. Takes down the cultists, does abscond with Red Robin just to explain the situation and how right now, the dude is his Queen Consort or co-king because magically enforced marriage at least they don’t have to copulate that would have been even worse. And Tim is just computer crashing as he gets an information dump on how one, there’s another realm that’s, two, filled with dead people who, three, is ruled by a guy his age and who, four, Tim is now married to because, five, cultists really need to do their hOMEWORK WHAT THE HELL -
And did I mention that the contract lets them know no secrets between them? So Danny knows who Tim is meaning he knows who the Batfam is but that’s okay since Tim knows who Danny is and oh wow that explains a lot about Jason now with the ecto-contamination by impure ectoplasm -
And Tim really doesn’t want to tell the Batfam what happened since he still has insecurities regarding his place in the family which isn’t helped by their treatment - and Danny is seething because him and Tim actually get along pretty well as friends and Tim has quickly worked his way into Danny’s Obsession of Protecc because Danny will always protect those he cares about and he doesn’t like how Tim gets treated especially when it came to learning about Tim’s missing spleen.
Now here’s the funny part of this AU - because of the marriage contract between Danny and Tim, Tim gets the perks of being Queen Consort/co-king in having power over ectoplasmic beings, so when Jason’s going in on Tim who has been stressed from the situation despite Danny and Tim’s new friends in Sam, Tucker, Valerie, Jazz, and Dani (and Dan if you want to include him) doing their best to help him destress which he greatly appreciates, is still operating on little to no sleep, AND just found out that somebody replaced his extra strong coffee with decaf, Jason who calls Tim “Replacement” one last time -
“SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Tim snarled at Jason, his eyes glowing a scarily familiar green to the Batfam. Jason’s own eyes began to glow green in response, but instead of his feeling angry, the Pits encouraging him to hurt, Jason can feel the Pits actually COWERING back instead this time, and an incredible urge to not say another peep.
Meanwhile the rest of the Batfam is also freaking out because holy shit when did Tim take a dip in the Pits?!

Could i request a ghostlight where danny can turn into a dragon, it could be though a curse or just training from queen dora?
Like dragon Danny seeing the yellow signal outfit and thinking "mmmmm gold, shiny, must take".
He should probably be more worried about being cursed.
Scratch that, he should definitely be more worried about being cursed. However, it wasn’t done intentionally or in bad faith. This is just the consequences of him, Sam, and Tucker fucking around and finding out when left unsupervised with the grimoire of a long dead witch.
In their defense, they didn’t know Tucker could use magic. This revelation both upset Tucker, who refused to be swayed from tech, and Sam, who thought she was a better fit for magic considering how goth she is. Danny hadn’t really cared, since he was too busy being turned into a dragon. At least it isn’t like with Dora’s necklace; Danny is still himself, can think clearly, and isn’t overcome by rage.
He’s just… Danny. But as a dragon.
“Well, you do something to fix him then!” Tucker shouts, waving a hand in the air angrily, “Since you want to be so good at magic, you do it then!”
“I would if I could! But you’re the one who gets to use magic, so figure it out and turn Danny back!” Sam shouts back, getting in Tucker’s face with a fierce scowl.
Danny sighs, shifting uncomfortably. His room is not big enough for a dragon, and his back is starting to cramp up. He looks longingly out the window to the clear skies that call to him, and wonders when his friends will stop fighting.
They keep shouting, so he doubts they’ll be able to focus on actually helping him for at least another hour.
The only silver lining about the situation is that Jazz and his parents are gone, taking the weekend to visit a few colleges so Jazz can decide which one she wants to go to. Though he’s been cursed into dragon form and his friends are yelling about it, at least his family can’t make it any worse with their attempts to ‘fix’ things.
There’s a lull in the yelling, Sam and Tucker both turning their attention back to the grimoire. Danny shifts his wings, tail flicking slightly, and leans his head closer. He wishes he could help figure this out, but he can’t talk in this form, and any attempt at charades will destroy his room.
His friends look focused, at least. So maybe they’ve decided to focus on finding solutions instead of fighting.
“Here,” Sam says, shoving the grimoire over to Tucker roughly. “Try that.”
Tucker reads over the spell, then scoffs and pushes the grimoire back. “That’s not going to fix anything. Didn’t you read it? It clearly says truth is the greatest revenge, revealing one’s true form force it into light. It’s talking about making people who are secretly cruel turn ugly or something like that! It’s not going to do anything for Danny!”
“It says one’s true form and Danny’s is a human! That would work!”
And they go right back to arguing.
Danny sighs, turning to stare out the window again.
In any other circumstance, being a dragon would be so fun. He has wings! He’s big and has claws and can probably breathe fire! And it’s not making him act on animal instincts or anything! If he could just be outside…
He glances at Sam and Tucker again.
Maybe he can go outside, enjoy the curse a bit before they figure out a way to undo it. Spend some time flying around with wings.
All the curse did was turn him into a dragon. It just changed his form. If he still has his ghost powers, if the curse didn’t change his nature from halfa to dragon…
Carefully, Danny focuses on his tail and tries to make it intangible. There’s a strange sensation of ice running down his spine, then it goes into his tail. In the next second, his tail drops through the floor, and Danny bites down a grin.
He is so out of here.
He gives Sam and Tucker another glance; they’ve got their heads bent over the grimoire, paying no attention to him.
Perfect.
Danny goes fully intangible and sinks through the floor of his bedroom, then maneuvers his way outside the house. As soon as he’s out, standing beneath the sunlight and able to stretch out his new body, Danny pulls his power back and takes a few careful steps on the grass, testing his balance. His wings shift on his back, and he stretches them out, feeling the way his new limbs move.
Everything feels natural, as if he’s always been a dragon.
Taking a deep breath, Danny spreads his wings out and takes off running. A few hard pumps of his wings gets him into the air, and he can’t help but let out a joyful roar.
Distantly, he hears Tucker and Sam yelling again, but he’s too happy to be free of that room to care. Let them argue. He wants to have fun.
Staying in Amity Park is a no go; Val might go after him, thinking he’s a threat, and ghosts could pop out at any time to cause problems. He might as well take this chance to fly around wherever he wants. Chicago wouldn’t be too hard to reach with how fast he’s flying, but he’s been there before and doesn’t want to stay in Illinois.
What other big city is nearby that he can fly to?
New York?
Or, better yet, Gotham.
It’s definitely a bad idea, but if any city is able to handle a dragon appearing without warning, it would be Gotham. Plus, he might get to see some of the heroes in action! Sure, it’s the middle of the day, but surely a dragon is a good enough reason for Batman to show up before the sun sets.
Mind made up, Danny flies up into the clouds and heads towards Gotham, following the roads out of Amity Park.
The flight is quick. It takes barely over an hour to see the dark figures of Gotham’s tallest buildings, fog surrounding the city like something out of a horror movie. The sun glints off the ocean behind the city for a rare, cloudless day. He’s heard stories about Gotham’s weather, how dreary it is, the occasional acid rain, the gloominess of it all. As bad as his luck is, it seems that the sunny day is trying to give him something good to even it out after being cursed into a dragon.
Excited, Danny angles himself down, diving out of the lower clouds and shifts his wings to catch on a wind current that smoothly sends him towards the city.
Just to be careful, he goes invisible as he gets closer, staying out of sight once he enters the city proper.
Noise overwhelms him immediately, cars honking and voices yelling, the occasional gunshot and sound of something breaking. It makes Danny wince, disoriented enough to make him falter as he flies above the streets.
Amity Park is quiet and peaceful in comparison, so much so that he hadn’t realized just how enhanced his senses had become in a dragon’s form.
The sounds of everything are so much, and all the movement of such a big city is dizzying. At least he can’t smell anything but salt from the sea; if he had to deal with the constant smell of blood, guts, and sewage, he would find a way to fully die to get away from it.
He slows down to a smooth glide, weaving his way between buildings as he takes in the city. Even with the sun out, it’s gloomy, the tall buildings casting shadows across the streets, a mix of art deco and gothic architecture filling up the space. He wonders if he should find some place up high he can rest, maybe bathe in the sun for a bit until he felt like moving again. If he managed to fall asleep, that might give Sam and Tucker enough time to figure out how to undo the curse.
“Ow! Shit, that hurts.”
Or he indulge in his curiosity and check up on whoever just cursed loud enough to be heard over the ambient noise of Gotham.
It takes a minute of searching before Danny’s eyes zero in on a bright flash of yellow moving across rooftops.
All other colors seem dull in comparison, and Danny has just enough time to think, Oh, there’s the dragon instincts taking over, before he’s flying after it, unable to focus on anything else.
Every time the yellow leaps out of the shadows, it’s as if it glows. As if Danny’s chasing sunlight.
He gets close, but loses the yellow every so often with how he has to maneuver around buildings, putting his new flying abilities to the test in an effort to keep up.
Then the yellow comes to an abrupt stop. Danny can’t stop in time and flies past it, tilting his body and spreading out his wides as far as he can to make a tight turn.
“I’m fine, just bruised up, but I feel like I’m being followed,” the yellow says to no one. There’s a pause, and then the yellow says, “I don’t see anything, is the thing.”
If the yellow has anything more to say, it doesn’t get the chance to do more than open its mouth before Danny’s crashing into it, tackling it to the ground.
He’s elated as they roll across the roof, the living sunlight caught safe in his arms. He holds it close to his chest, protecting it until they come to a stop, dropping his invisibility as a low rumble builds in the back of his throat. The dragon brain has thoroughly taken over, and it takes far too long to wrestle control back from it.
Once he’s able to think more clearly, Danny looks down at the poor guy he’s caught and realizes, hey that’s a hero!
And then he realizes, that’s a hero. I fucked up.
He tries to say sorry, but all that comes out is a low chuff. The hero, who he can recognize as the Signal because who else wears mostly yellow in Gotham, leans back as much as he can, trapped in Danny’s grasp.
“Hey, dragon,” Signal says nervously. “I’m really hoping you didn’t catch me because you were looking for a snack.”
Danny huffs, bumping his head against Signal’s chest. He hopes he doesn’t come across as aggressive, because all he wants to do is laze around with a hero, his dragon brain happy to keep hold of its yellow sunshine.
He’s not going to let go of Signal, though. He intends to make the most of this moment while he can.
“Okay. You seem friendly? That’s good I guess.” Signal sighs, then tries to wiggle out of Danny’s grip. Danny doesn’t budge until Signal gasps and curls into himself, clearly in pain.
Worried, Danny lets go of him and tries to see what’s wrong, his snout poking against the Signal’s ribs.
The Signal hisses out a breath, trying to push Danny away. “Stop, don’t do that. Man, I hope my ribs aren’t broken. That would suck.”
That would suck. Rib injuries are the worst, and the bruises always seem to stay longer on ribs than anywhere else, in Danny’s experience. He would love to offer the Signal some ice, but as a dragon, he’s not sure how to use that particular power. He settles instead for backing off and making himself small, offering an apologetic rumble.
“Thanks,” Signal smiles, gingerly uncurling from where he’s hunched over, an arm crossing his stomach, protecting it. “I guess you’re friendly, then?”
Danny nods.
“...And you can understand me?”
Danny nods harder, a high pitched growl slipping out of his mouth.
“That’s so cool. What are you doing here in Gotham?”
It’s not a yes or no question, so Danny’s stuck on how to answer when words are so far out of reach. He shrugs, wings shifting against his back, then carefully bumps his head against the Signal’s helmet.
“Yeah, that was a bad question. Do you need help?”
Danny scrunches up his nose as he thinks. He is cursed, but so far, being a dragon isn’t all that bad. It sucks that he can’t talk, but everything else is cool! He just doesn’t want to be a dragon forever. But it’s nothing the Signal can help with, so Danny just shrugs again.
The Signal tilts his head. “Alright. I guess I’ll get going then, and you can chill up here.”
The low growl comes suddenly, without him even thinking, and Danny wraps himself around the hero again. Distantly, he thinks that he should stop, that this is technically holding the Signal in place against his will, but the much louder, dragon part of him is deeply upset by the thought of the Signal leaving while he’s injured. Danny can protect him, so there’s no need for him to go anywhere! In fact, he’s only safe as long as he’s with Danny!
He leans more of his weight onto the Signal until they both fall back onto the roof, pinning the hero in place.
Danny tries to be gentle, but the impact still makes Signal groan, tensing up in pain.
Sorry, he tries to say, the words coming out in a low chuffing noise. He draws his tail up to curl around the Signal so he’s completely surrounded by Danny, kept safe from anything that would try to attack him.
Letting out a breath, the Signal lightly knocks his head against Danny’s neck, the helmet barely felt through Danny’s scales. “Alright, Oracle, can you send someone to my location? I’m a bit stuck.”
It’s hard to hear, but Danny manages to make out a voice saying, “Black Bat is heading there now. What’s wrong?”
“I’m a bit stuck.”
“Injured?”
“Just my ribs, but that’s not really the problem. There’s a dragon who’s very determined to keep me on this roof.”
“A dragon,” the voice repeats.
“Yeah. It seems to like me? But it’s also not letting me leave. So. I’m stuck.”
There’s a pause, then a soft burst of static before the voice says, “I’m going to send a message to everyone else just in case they’re able to provide any back up. I’m sure Tim is looking for an excuse to ditch Bruce at that accounting meeting.”
“Guess I’ll just wait to be rescued, then,” Signal says, sighing. Then he tilts his head up to look at Danny. “Is there some way you could talk to me? To pass the time. Maybe morse code? Do you know what that is?”
Dragon brain makes him stupid, apparently, because Danny does know morse code. He didn’t even think of alternative ways of communication once he discovered talking was impossible with his new vocal chords.
It’s probably not even dragon brain. It’s just Danny brain that makes him like this.
Embarrassed, Danny drops his head onto the roof, drawing his tail closer to himself so it can cover his eyes, his best attempt at hiding his face. Then, with one sharp claw, he taps out Y.E.S.
“Oh! So, what’s up?”
N.O.T. D.RA.G.O.N. H.U.M.A.N. G.O.T. C.U.R.S.E.D.
“Why did you say you didn’t need help if you got cursed?!”
Danny wants to say it was an accident, but has no confidence that he can spell ‘accident’ correctly, so he goes with F.R.I.E.N.D. M.A.D.E. M.I.S.T.A.K.E.
“And can they fix it?”
I.D.K. T.H.E.Y. W.E.R.E. F.I.G.H.T.I.N.G. Danny huffs out a breath, flicking his tail in annoyance as he uncurls slightly, giving Signal some more breathing space. He doesn’t look as stressed out anymore, which is nice, but he still holds his ribs tenderly, careful not to move too much. G.O.T. B.O.R.E.D. L.E.F.T.
The Signal taps his own fingers against the roof, thinking after he takes in Danny’s words. “Do you think we can call them and see if they know how to fix it? I doubt you want to be a dragon forever.”
N.O. P.H.O.N.E.
“It’s cool, we can use mine.” And he pulls out a cell phone from… somewhere. Danny has no idea where. It’s like he blinked, and a phone suddenly appeared. His hero suit probably has a lot of hidden compartments and pockets to hold as much stuff as possible, but it’s so well designed that Danny can’t begin to think of where he’d put anything. Especially when his dragon brain keeps getting distracted by how nice the yellow is.
Danny taps out Tucker’s number when Signal asks for it, watching as the call connects and is put on speaker.
“Hello?” Tucker’s voice says, hesitant and a little distracted.
“Hi,” Signal responds with a mischievous smile, “Do you happen to be missing a dragon? Cause I’ve got one here who’s hoping he can get a little help from a friend.”
Danny hears something clatter on Tucker’s end, then Tucker starts yelling for Sam. He’s not quite able to bite back his laughter, entire body shaking with it. The Signal keeps his composure better, but he does share a glance with Danny that has him biting his lip, trying to keep his smile from growing.
“Where is he?!” Tucker demands, and for a moment Danny feels ashamed of how much stress he’s putting his best friends through. And then he remembers them fighting nonstop while ignoring him and doesn’t feel bad at all.
“Gotham.”
“...Gotham,” Sam repeats. Her voice is flat in the way it always gets before she verbally (and sometimes physically) tears someone apart. Danny winces hard enough that it jostles the Signal, making him glance back at Danny.
“Yeah. Gotham. He said he was cursed?”
Sam sighs heavily. “Yeah. Not my fault. It is Tucker’s fault, though.”
“I think I found the solution though! And also, it was an accident. You were the one who wanted to read the grimoire.”
He can tell they’re gearing up for another fight, so Danny lowers his face closer to the phone and lets loose a dark growl. It shuts them right up, and he briefly wonders about learning how to growl like that as a human, since it’s so effective.
Tucker clears his throat, and continues as if nothing happened. “Anyways. The cure. The thing that will make Danny stop being cursed.”
There’s another long pause.
“The cure…?” Signal prompts.
“Kisses.”
“Sorry, what?”
“It’s kisses.”
“Like… true love’s kiss?”
Danny hopes it’s not true love’s kiss. If it is, he’s never going to be human again. Who would his true love even be? As much as he liked Valerie, that ships sailed long ago. And he loves Sam and Tucker, but not quite like that.
“No. Thankfully,” Sam says. “Just kisses. What matters is the amount, not the person it’s from. So whoever you are, we’re gonna need you to be giving Danny as many kisses as possible until he’s human again. We’re also on our way to Gotham now. Johnny’s offered us a ride.”
On cue, an engine revs loudly.
“We’ll be there soon!” Tucker shouts over the engine, and the call ends just a second later.
Danny huffs, shaking his head lightly.
“Interesting friends you got there,” Signal comments idly.
Y.E.S. Danny taps out. L.O.V.E. T.H.E.M.
The Signal sits up and moves away from Danny, who has to stomp down the urge to curl around the hero tighter to keep him in place. He stands up, putting his phone away, and looks over Danny. His gaze feels like a physical weight, moving from his face, and the horns on his head, to the scales covering him, to his wings and tail.
His tails flicks back and forth nervously. Danny can’t get it to stop.
“Dragon,” someone new says, startling Danny. He spots the newcomer immediately, a lithe figure in all black perched on the ledge of the roof. Her voice is rough and he can’t see her face at all, fully covered as it is in her mask.
This must be Black Bat. He doesn’t know much about her; no one does, with how she’s managed to avoid being photographed and how rarely she is seen by anyone at all. He honestly wasn’t sure if she was real or not, but here she is.
“Hey,” Signal greets easily, “We need to kiss him better.”
Black Bat tilts her head. “Kiss… dragon?”
“He’s cursed. And kisses will fix him. Not true love’s kiss, but just a lot of kisses.”
“True love’s kiss?” she repeats.
“Oh, shit. I guess you haven’t read any fairy tales?” Black Bat shakes her head, and Danny wonders how she’s managed to avoid all fairy tales for so long. They’re usually among the first stories children are exposed to. “Yeah, in a lot of those stories, a curse can only be broken from a kiss by someone by love.”
Black Bat nods slowly, and it’s clear she doesn’t really understand, but she does hop off the ledge and walk over to Danny. She pulls up her mask to reveal her mouth, then looks to the Signal for guidance.
“Like this,” Signal says, then leans over and presses a soft kiss to Danny’s cheek.
If he were human, Danny would be blushing madly. As it is, he has to force himself to stay still and not hide his face in his hands, claws and all, from how flustered he is.
Black Bat follows in suit, dropping a delicate kiss to the top of his head.
Danny loses track of how many kisses he gets, all over his face, beyond flustered by the amount of affection two heroes are showering him in. It’s just to break the curse, but it’s still a lot of kisses!
Signal kisses the tip of his nose, and there’s a flash of light. Danny feels himself change, growing smaller, his human softness returning to him. It’s barely a few seconds, and then Danny’s human again, sitting on the roof with the Signal and Black Bat standing over him.
They blink at each other for a long moment, then Black Bat smiles and pats the top of his head.
Danny smiles. He knows his cheeks are red, can feel how hot they are himself, and ducks his head, too embarrassed to look at either of them.
“How are you feeling?” Signal asks, crouching down to be eye level with Danny.
He tries to answer, but all that comes out is a hoarse rasp. He winces and brings a hand up to his throat, then shrugs and gives the Signal a thumbs up.
He clears his throat. This time, he manages to whisper, “Thank you.”
Black Bat gives him a cheerful wave, then hops back onto the ledge and jumps off. Signal barely takes his eyes off Danny enough to give her a nod goodbye. He reaches out and brushes Danny’s hair off his forehead some before his fingers trail down the side of his face.
“I’ll admit, you looked cool as a dragon,” Signal says, “But you’re much cuter like this.”
Danny gives in and hides his face in his hands. The Signal laughs, warm and bright, and kisses his forehead.
“Come on, let’s make sure your friends can find you.”
“They’re going to be so annoying about this,” Danny mutters.
“It’s how friends show affection.”
“Seriously, though, thank you. I know being tackled by a dragon isn’t what anyone expects. Did I hurt you? Your ribs…”
The Signal shrugs. “Nah. I’m all good. Just a little bruised, but it’ll heal quickly enough. Though, you’re more than welcome to give me a kiss to help me feel better.”
Danny shoves him lightly for the teasing, but he does pull the Signal back for a quick kiss on the corner of his mouth.
It’s only fair, after all.

Ghost King wants a Mate
Danny tried to find ways to not get crowned as the Ghost King. Sam told him about summoning a creature for a deal or something similar; maybe they would know something.
The trio somehow summoned Klarion, and as he asked them what they wanted, Klarion doesn't allow himself to be summoned often, but the meeting in the Light was super boring.
Sam and Tucker wait for Danny to talk about his Ghost King problem and see if he can make sure he doesn't get crowned.
But all those plans changed when Danny saw Klarion. "How to make you my Queen!"
Klarion was more amused than he should be; he let himself be summoned, and this was the question he got?
He laughed and told him to be strong enough to capture him fully, and then he broke the summoing circle and was gone.
Sam and Tucker glared at Danny.
Danny had a plan: he would try to make Klarion his mate.
Danny left for the Ghost Zone to become the new King the next day, and Clockwork just shook his head.
After a few weeks, as Klarion was fighting the young Justice kids, Danny came out of nowhere as the Ghost King. And then pulled a Hades on Klarion as he kidnapped him. Klarion laughed as he noticed that the light and the JL looked shocked, but let it happen; this will bring Chaos.
On the other side, he saw King Hades and Queen Persephone.
Danny:" Your plan actually worked, Lord Hades."
Hades smiled: See, I told you it works. You've got a good companion. Young King."
Persephone looked at both and said, "While you two talk, I will talk with Klarion about the future duties he would do if you married."
JL and the Light broke into the castle and saw King Danny with his married mate, Klarion.
Klarion had joy on his face as he saw their shocked faces, and Teekl loves it here too.

soulmates - c. brock
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
colby x fem! latina! reader
warnings: cursing, ghost hunting, blood.
she/ her pronouns used, theres some spanish speaking in this.
————————————————————————
“WHATS UP GUYS ITS SAM AND COLBY!” colby exclaimed to the camera that sam was currently holding.
“today we will be exploring ‘the queen mary’ with a few special guests!” sam said as he turned the camera around to show four people standing in front of a car waving and smiling.
Amanda, Larray, Nick, and y/n were asked to be in this video since they had been planning on collaborating, what better way than taking all four of them to the queen mary in long beach
the group went inside to check in and get a tour of the ship and settle into their rooms.
-
10:00pm
“are you guys ready?” sam asked to the group who were all sitting down talking about the ship and the history behind it
“yea i am” spoke y/n “yea, no imma log off because who do i look like nancy drew?” exclaimed larray as he was pretending to leave.
they joked a bit more and then walked out of the room making their way to the ships pool area y/n felt targeted, from feeling taps on her shoulder to hearing people calling her name.
“hijos de su puta madre” she mumbled under her breath as she felt a chill run down her spine “you good?” asked larray next to her with a concerned look.
“yea i just keep feeling taps, hearing whispers behind me and i just felt a chill run down my spine”
-
“okay so we’re in front of the pool were apparently a little girl died, we will be parting ways here colby, nick, and I will stay here in the pool area while larray, amanda, and y/n go to room B340” explained sam into the camera the larray and y/n holding on to each other with shocked expressions on while amanda looked at sam in disbelief.
“we’re going there ALONE?!” asked larray “yes, we will stay here and do the estes method and you guys go to the room to do it, afterwards we’ll come together and say what we got from it” explained colby.
“okay.. that’s not bad we can do that..” said amanda.
the group separated to their designated areas and ready to do the dual estes method.
“okay while they go to the room and we stay here we will have nick do the estes method!” sam said holding the blindfolded and radio.
“wait why do i have to do it?” nick asked with a nervous laugh “because you’re new to the channel!” laughed colby putting the blindfold on nick.
helping nick sit down on the floor and putting on the headphones the boys decided to finally start their session.
“nick, can you hear us?” said sam looking at the camera and back to him, no response.
“okay, it appears he can’t hears so let’s get this started with” exhaled colby “who are we talking to?” he asked.
“girl” nick said “is this the girl that died in the pool behind us?” sam asked.
-
with the other three
they walked into the room ready to start their session when the lights started to flicker.
“woah did you get that?” asked amanda facing y/n who was currently holding the camera, nodding her head hesitantly facing the camera towards the lights.
“okay since y/n has been ‘targeted’ throughout this whole thing i think it’s best if she does the estes method!” larray said reaching for the camera and facing it to said girl.
slowly nodding she’s put on the blindfold grabbing the headphones and going into the trance.
“y/n/n? can you hear us?” silence “okay since she can’t hear us we should start the questions” said larray. “who are we talking to?” asked amanda
“danger” y/n said in a scared voice “is someone in danger?” both amanda and larray asked.
“y/n” said girl flinched at the sound of her name
“what about her?” asked amanda “i want her” mumbled y/n with fear in her voice. larray didn’t like the sound of that so he tapped her shoulder to get her out of the trance.
“what happened? is everything okay?” asked y/n “yea, you just said some things that terrified us so we decided to take you out of the trance i think we should go with the guys to tell them what happened” explained amanda.
as they were leaving y/n being the last one she heard a voice as she looked back the door in front of her shut locking her in the dark room.
larray and amanda turn around at the sound of a door slamming and screaming, they soon realized that y/n wasn’t behind them anymore.
tugging at the door to open y/n couldn’t help but feel a hefty amount of pressure on her chest and the whole room going blurry.
“y/n!” amanda exclaimed pushing at the door to get it open but couldn’t “larray go get the guys! the door won’t open!” she exclaimed panicking.
-
larray was running to the guys with a panicked look on his face colby was the first to notice him and the fact that the girls were not behind him.
“larray, is everything okay? where are the girls?” colby asked while sam took nick out of the trance. “that’s what i came for we were leaving when suddenly the door closed trapping y/n inside the room we can’t get open” he was cut off by colby running off to the direction of the girls the rest following him.
as soon as colby got there he started to slam his body weight against the door to get it to budge but it wouldn’t open after a few slamming against it and punches the door open to a y/n on the floor with her head in her knees panicking.
once she heard the door open and colby walking up to her she ran to him almost tackling him into a hug.
“are you okay?” he whispered in the crook of her neck, not being able to speak she just nodded her head as a response pulling away from him a little to look at him before slamming her lips to his.
they parted from the kiss just looking at each other “sorry, i just thought i’d-” she was interrupted by his lips crashing into hers.
even though they both did not believe in soulmates one thing is for certain they were meant to be and nothing could ruin that for them.
————————————————————————

Tumblr media
Stupid fucking bitch.
One dial tone waned into another, a monotonous wave taunting you from the end of the receiver. Your fingers tap impatiently against the counter. How long could a phone actually ring before it stopped or someone finally answered?
Too damn long apparently.
Giving up and counting your losses, you slam the receiver back on the wall, muttering more choice words as you skirt your hips behind the wooden bar, thumbing through the blue lined notebook schedule.
Work was packed. More-so than any other Friday night, but since it was the beginning of graduation weekend for Hawkins High— every Sam, Dick, and Harry had wandered into the bar looking for a cheap escape and a sugary drink.
Lucky for them, that was exactly what Queen of Hearts had on the menu. And if you talked to the right person, the luck didn’t stop there.
“No answer?” Jolene called over her shoulder, hands full with a bottle of Jack Daniels.
Scribbling an angry dark mark through the name Ginger on the schedule, you toss the notebook back into the drawer shutting it with your hip.
“Just rang and rang,”  you say, annoyingly jumping in to help her finish pouring three Jack & Cokes. The soda fizzes under your thumb, “and before you try to cover for her, this is the fourth time she’s done this.”
She lets out an exaggerated sigh, taking the cans from you and tossing them into the trash.
“Really thought this one would work out,” her long legs cross behind you to slot the liquor bottle back in its designated spot, “she had kids.. poor thing needed the cash.”
The familiar ache of neglect radiated through you, “I found a babysitter for the nights she was working, told her I’d help pay… that asshole she keeps around probably found out she was working here.”
Jolene raises her eyebrows. Her slender fingers hold the three drinks with ease, setting them on a tray.
“Can’t believe Jackie skipped town with that rich salesman,” she sighs heavily, leaning an elbow on the sticky bar, “lucky girl, something like that would never happen to me.”
Jealousy pings in your chest but you shake it off, “he was really dreamy huh? Those beauty marks? His hair? His ass?” You wolf whistle, “cut me a slice.”
You weren’t jealous that Jackie was now probably driving a BMW, that her life would be nothing but luxurious from here on out, or even that her boyfriend was movie star hot.
What made your blood boil over was the fact that she got out, and you were still stuck here like hardened gum underneath a table.
The club was a part of you. Like an unwanted birthmark, this lifestyle was something you couldn’t get away from. Understanding at a young age, when most girls were playing with dolls, just exactly the kind of life you were destined to live, and unfortunately it wasn’t outside of these four walls.
“Your time will come,” Jolene smiled, looking into a compact and wiping a smudge of lipstick from her teeth, “you’re still young, Miss Assistant.”
You rolled your eyes, placing the tray on her awaiting palm. Since Jackie was gone, her job was now yours.  Tacking on added responsibilities with no pay raise in sight. You found out all too soon what a fucking joke that title of ‘assistant’ actually was.
“Told him I didn’t want it, but you know how that went.”
“I do kid,” she sighs, looking down at you, her eyes sweeping over the still pink scar in your eyebrow, “I really… oh honey, you’re gonna be a busy little bee tonight!”
You breathe heavily through your nose, dragging your hands down your face, “don’t remind me.”
“I’ll help out wherever, ‘kay?”
Jolene had taken you under her wing when you first walked into Queen of Hearts. Freshly eighteen almost down to the hour, naive waters brimming your eyes, forced into this life.
Her motherly ways comforted everyone, only thirty-three but in this industry that was practically ninety. Just like you, Jolene had deep roots in this place.
Her tall frame slinks over to the waiting guys sitting at the stage, a pleasant smile on her lips. Twirling the ends of her black hair twisted into schoolgirl pigtails, laying the charm on thick.
Staring over at her in a forlorn gaze, you hated to think of yourself still here ten years from now, a permanent fixture to this place, like Jolene. The lemons of life were squeezed and you had made the lemonade, but it was sour, bitter.. you longed for something sweeter.
The bubbly fantasy is popped when Mickey Fritz’ oversized hand hits the counter like he’s a toddler in a highchair.
“Hey sugar tits, I’m empty o’er here!”
Your nightmare reality comes back into view.
Tumblr media
The walls at Queen of Hearts were draped in deep shades of red velour, a cozy ambiance to invite strangers and locals alike. The bar was backlit and stocked with a decent selection of polished bottles of whiskey, gin and bourbon.
His boots clapped along the wood floor as the pair walked further inside, leaving a plume of smoke in their wake, catching on the neon lights and creating a smoked crimson haze across the dark club.
The raised stage was centered, creating an aisle on either side of it, clad with leather backed red chairs surrounding it at every angle. For a night club in the middle of Indiana, it wasn’t half bad compared to the places he was used to out East.
A row of booths were tucked onto the left side of the club, high top tables stood crowded with drunk college students, yelling loudly and making asses of themselves to impress the working girls.
The music blaring over the speakers was a little cliche and too “pop” for his liking—fuck, had he really turned into one of those guys, questioning what a strip club was playing for music?
He rolls his eyes at his own false pretentiousness, turning it into a wink at a cocktail waitress carrying a tray full of plastic flutes filled with a gut rot of pink liqueur. The gold thong she was wearing sat high on her hips, matching the cheap glittery cowboy hat on her blonde curls.
Dark eyes follow her long legs to a nearby table, a fist to his mouth as he whistles and licks his chomps.
“Damn! Can you believe this used to be the Hideout?” Jeff squawked, not so casually adjusting himself as they slid into an open booth, “that was Gareth Emerson’s twin sister, she really grew up huh, remember him?”
He didn’t.
Much like anyone else Jeff had tried to bring up since he had agreed to meet up for a drink on the occasion that they were both home, he hadn’t given high school a second thought since the night he left.
“Nah, man,” he said, grabbing for the sticky menu on the black table top, “I don’t.”
It had been years since he had seen Jeff, and he was surprised that he had recognized him at the gas station last night when he was filling up his motorcycle.
His own appearance hadn’t changed much, dressed a little better, wore cologne now, normal shit that came along with getting out of puberty.
Back then Jeff still had braces, a small lisp when he got really drunk. Now, he was a grown man. Living in Phoenix with a big important job at some company, home for the weekend to visit his parents, and watch his youngest brother graduate.
There would be no visiting family or old friends for him on this trip back to Hawkins. The thought of running into anyone he knew and having that painfully awkward small talk about the ‘good old days as a Tiger!’ made him cringe, as if that ever were the case for him.
Having left this shit hole in the middle of the night seven years ago, he took nothing with him but some saved cash, his guitar, a full tank of gas and the clothes on his back.
The heavy ache in his chest, brim filled with remorse, was an added carry on, something that didn’t go away with the miles he had put between him and Hawkins.
He had planned to keep this town in the rearview, but life, probably karma, had other plans.
Back in Hawkins strictly on “business,” that's what he told Jeff when the smiley old friend grabbed him into a bear hug in the checkout line, crushing the chips he was carrying to a powder in its aluminum bag.
Technically, it was family business. But he hadn’t mentioned that to Jeff. He didn’t want the questions, didn’t want the pity.
He barely even knew his uncle that well anyway, but being the only living relative of the deceased, he didn’t have a choice when the call came through that he had passed.
A week. That was the timeframe he told his job that he’d be gone for. Leaving just enough time to plan the funeral, and sell the trailer.
Coming home to the haunting shadows of Hawkins was like playing in a graveyard filled with demons of his past. Sorrow filled every dark corner, looming around him like a fog, making him unable to forget the damage left behind.
For years it had worked out fine, he had moved on. But every now and then, he had to push his inner demons down, and still to this day, years after the fact, they kept trying to crawl back up. The shame of his past coming to the forefront.
The music changes to another upbeat song that was popular on the radio, Jeff nods along to the beat, strumming his fingers against his belly like he was playing the guitar.
He looked over at his old highschool friend and smiled for the first time since being back here, “still play?”
Jeff stretched a wide grin across his face, chuckling a little too loud, “only in my dreams… working seventy-hour weeks doesn’t really allow me to have that kinda freedom.” He nodded and smiled a little at the waitress who was coming to take their drink orders, “so what have you been up to man? It’s been years!”
He knew all too well about not having free time to spend the way he had wanted to. He didn’t even own a guitar anymore. The last time he saw his Warlock, it was sitting in a pawn shop in Nashville— the last of his many possessions sold to make ends meet.
Ordering a beer, he counts his budget for this trip in his head, deciding to buy Jeff’s drink too. Maybe being back wouldn’t be so bad after a drink or two, a little liquid courage to get him through the night at least.
The pleather seat creaks beneath his weight when he leans back further into the booth, stretching his arms out wide. Trying to gain a sliver of comfort since being home.

Working the pole to Ginger’s song of choice, Once Bitten, Twice Shy, you found it hard to get into music you could care less about. But you didn’t have time to complain.
Legs crossed and spinning upside down, bare besides a face full of makeup and a red thong, you pretended that you were anywhere else but there.
How nice it would be to not have to crawl across dirty dollar bills, teasing a faceless man with your body so that he would be eager enough to slip a twenty into your g-string.
Collecting your tips from your set, you tap them against your vanity in the dressing room, counting out loud your mind already knowing how much money will be put away after bills are paid.
The long jagged crack in your mirror served as the only looking glass you liked to look in. The warped shapes of your face looking back at you made it easier to swallow the life you were living, as if it were a fever dream, a disturbed Alice in Wonderland type reality.
In the mirror you weren’t a dancer at Queen of Hearts. You could be a nurse, a librarian, a cook in a shitty home town restaurant who went home smelling like grease instead of men’s cologne and wearing suspicious stains.
It could be easy, simple really. Bus tickets weren’t terribly expensive. Going to any city, a map in your hand and the saved coffee can of cash tucked into your purse. You could almost imagine the taste of the ocean. The thought of even stepping outside of Indiana was enough to power you for the rest of the night.
As easily as the daydream came it fluttered away when the boss stepped into the dressing room.
His eyes loomed in a dead stare, sweat pooling on his temples. The ice in his glass shifted as it melted into the whiskey. A Colombian cigar tucked into his fat mouth had an inch long ash waiting to fall.
He wasn’t much taller than you, barely older, but his attitude and small dick made him seem eight feet tall.
“The hell are you doing in here? Fucking Christ woman, the girls are drowning out there, those needle dick college fucks are about to swing fists and you’re in here staring at yourself?”
“Just takin’ a little break Tommy, I gotta change.”
“I don’t need any lip from you, better watch it before I match that other scar y’ hear me?”
His threats didn’t scare you, it was who he answered to that made you terrified. A bad report to the big boss and you’d be drinking your meals through a straw. You knew because it’s already happened. Turns out you don’t need your mouth to swing around a pole.
“Loud and clear.”
This type of life was the only one you had ever known. You quite literally grew up with this environment right under your nose, and everyone at the club knew it.
The romance novels you kept in your purse were full of knights in shining armor type of men, another fallacy to your looking glass.
The thought of anything else was only real in your daydreams. Escaping the festering wound of Hawkins was impossible, almost unheard of. No one with your background got out.
But he did.

Shoulder to shoulder, squeezing in sideways with grimy singles fisted in their hands, the club was stuffed to the hilt with sweaty, drunk, and extremely horny men.
“… here!” you slam two more drinks onto the heaping tray and shove it into Wendy’s hands, “take this to those asshats and tell them we are out of triple sec, no more Long Island Ice Teas, if they want a drink they can order beer like everyone else.”
Wendy swung her hips with the Long Islands in tow over  to soften the hearts of the college boys. Batting her lashes, sitting topless on their laps and letting them tell her stories of the parties they went to, the classes they skipped and the girls they fucked. Anything to keep them from hollering and starting a fight with the locals.
Lisa Ann was working over the business men from out of town, their briefcases shining with a matte patent leather, expensive watches adorning their wrists. Her pretty Marilyn Monroe smile on display as she brought over their drinks, tussling their hair between her pink fingernails, putty at her fingertips.
Between the rest of you rotating between pouring drinks, collecting payments and trying to wiggle past the grabby hands of Donny, the roar of the busy hour had started to lull.
All of you were tired and crabby, legs cramping and toes pinched in uncomfortable shoes. Jolene wiped her brow and blew out a deep breath.
“Take fifteen,” you said to her, “I got it from here.”
She shot you a wink and disappeared into the dressing room.
Peeling the soles of your boots from the floor you lean your back against the shelf of liquor bottles. Working your hands on the base of your neck behind your head.
The usual crink that ached when you were stressed was flaring up again. Causing your shoulders to tense up and sending a pinched dull ache from your back up to your throbbing temples. Radiating your jaw, with a heat so fierce it could melt glass and it wasn’t even eleven o’ clock yet.
Your eyes are pressed closed in a tight squeeze, maybe you could shut the pain out by pretending it wasn’t there.
“Tiffs just about done in room D,” Veronica chirped, her bracelets jingling in a metallic tune, “the ‘doctor’ again,” she explains with air quotes chuckling to herself.
“He’s only here on nights she’s workin’” you say exhaustedly,  “she’s his favorite.”
Being one of the few regulars that wasn’t married, he was somehow the slimiest worm in the dirt. Tall and slender framed with icy white hair, he seemed to stare down his nose at the girls, his voice an eerily calm when he asked for Tiff, handing over the crisp fifties to secure her for the allotted amount of time.
Beads click together as she stumbles in from the back, adjusting her lipstick and holding the ripped strap of her bra, followed behind her like clockwork was the doctor, tucking his oxford shirt into his slacks.
Your jaw felt like it was going to ignite, as if it were covered in tension rods and the gears were  cranking it tighter and tighter, sweat beginning to form on your back, “can you hand me my purse?”
Rustling your bag from underneath the bar, Veronica hands over the canvas tote, her emerald eyes staring at you expectantly like a serpent watching its prey, “care to share those little party favors?”
Rolling your eyes, you move your hand through the contents inside. Pushing past a checkbook, lipsticks, and the papered corner of a tampon. Finally your fingers close around the smooth unlabeled bottle.
Two tablets land in your palm when you pop the cap, and you shake it begrudgingly to release another tablet from the bottle for Veronica.
She giggles and grabs two shot glasses, pouring bourbon into them both.
“Only one,” you instruct, a serious look in your eyes, “I’m not picking you up from the floor later.”
A coy little smile on her lips, she brings the shot glasses over, handing one to you, “you worry too much.”
Placing the pill in her free palm, you clink the glasses together in a little cheer.
“To us,” Veronica grins, “may our titties stay perky, our asses juicy, the boys pockets fat and our kitties not loosey.”
You roll your eyes and she laughs, her lips close around the glass the same as yours, and you swallow down the liquor, wincing at the taste.
Within fifteen minutes the temporary high coats your brain like a warm blanket, floating you to a place far away from shiny poles, 6 inch heels, and ass slaps, away from Hawkins.

Jeff listens intently as he explains a very bland and watered down version of how he left Hawkins and traveled east, working odd jobs.
Skipping the part about how he lied about his age to find work, and how he spent an entire month getting his ass kicked after dishwashing shifts at some swanky restaurant outside of Raleigh.
He explained the good stuff, how he worked part time at a tattoo shop for one of his buddies he met in Philly. His full time gig being a lead shift at a factory.
It wasn’t that impressive, he knew that, but he couldn’t make himself give a shit what anyone thought of him. For only being twenty-three, he was proud of having a paycheck every two weeks from a legit place.
The click of the waitresses shoes on the floor had Jeff looking up, thanking her for the drinks. She was dressed a little more conservative than the other waitresses had been, wearing a black mini skirt and a see-through red long sleeved top, showing off black sparkly stickers that covered her nipples.
But that wasn’t what had him taking a second look. At first glance he thought maybe it was just a note written in pen, a reminder of some sort on the top of her hand, lots of people wrote on their hands right? But when she set the drinks down, reaching past them and across the table to grab a napkin, sopping up spilled beer, he almost choked on air.
It wasn’t something written in pen, or a weird unlucky shaped birthmark. The marks on her hand were two small symbols, they had faded with time and were blown out a little on the edges.
Of course they were, because the identical marks on his hand were blurred the exact same way. Two little symbols, done on the hottest day in July. The smell of his childhood room stung his nose as he thought of that day.
A day when you were both only thirteen.

The regulars were bellied up to the bar holding an aluminum can toast to their long gone friend, hollering for you to play some David Allen Coe in a final goodbye.
Flicking through the jukebox to find “Never Even Called Me By My Name,” you were too busy to pay any attention to the toast of the deceased buddy.
Maybe if you had, you wouldn’t have been completely blindsided.
“Clovie?” A disgustingly sweet saccharine voice laced between bubble gum pink lips sang out from behind you, tapping you simultaneously on the shoulder, “be a dolly and run the drinks over to table 8, would ya?”
“Why c—”
Tiff was already gone, the door to the dressing room swinging shut in a shower of White Diamond perfume before you could even spin around and tell her where she could shove those aforementioned drinks.
Outside of collecting her own tips, and pleasuring the doctor, Tiff never lifted a finger to help.
Wiping your hands on the cleanest towel you could find, your muttering goes unheard as you cross back over to the bar and grab the cracked black plastic tray set with two large overflowing mugs of draft beer.
The ground was sticky under your boots, like walking in half dried paint, sometimes you wondered if Wendy actually served a full drink to anyone.
Balancing the heavy tray on your palm and shoulder, you pray that it won’t snap before you’re able to place the drinks down.
Table 8 was occupied by a guy you had seen before but couldn’t remember from where, and a long dark curly haired woman who was facing away from you.
The smile on your face was the fakest one you could make, hoping to maybe get a good tip before Tiff could notice and take her claim.
“Alrighty,” your customer service voice sang with a false sweet sincerity, “looks like we have two Busch Lights?”
The guy you had greeted smiled eagerly, moving his elbows from the table allowing room for the frosty mugs to be placed.
Your fingers work gingerly to set the ruby colored drink napkins down first. The beer was placed carefully, his greedy fingers grabbing the handle before you could barely remove your hand from it.
The second beer started to slide on the tray, and you over corrected causing it to land with a thud on the table, sloshing the pale ale all over the table—luckily not on the woman.
So much for a tip, huh?
Apologizing quickly, you lean across the table and reach for the paper napkins. Wiping up the mess hastily you toss the wet heap onto your tray.
Turning to the woman to offer her a look that’ll hopefully get you in her good graces— well enough that maybe her husband would reconsider tipping, “I’ll go fetch a rag and come back with another beer free of charge sweetheart,” you start to smile sheepishly, “I’m so s—”
The eyes you were met with were the deepest shade of brown, struck with astonishment, crowded by a grove of thick lashes, a look of dismay etched into them.
Blinking once, twice, you couldn’t register if you were truly seeing this or hallucinating.
You hadn’t seen those eyes in years, a flash of recognition drops on your face and the perky smile fades. Heart falling to the well of your stomach, punching the air from your lungs, heat rising to the surface of your cheeks.
In an instant, you’re brought back to many years before tonight. When those eyes were younger, full of teenage angst and rebellion.
Hell must’ve froze over, pigs were without a doubt flying overhead: Eddie Munson had returned to Hawkins.
