I’m so wildly sick rn plss send Elliott hcs for a very sick farmer
Epc
I didn't see this until now, so of course my Beloved!
Elliott walked back into the bedroom with a soft sigh seeing your sick face huddled in the blankets of the bed. He had warned you about attempting to farm in the rain, even after years of this you still would not listen to his reason. "Oh Dear, the pills Dr. Harvey gave you aren't working yet are they?"
The groan that came from you told him all he needed. Years of marrage that tuned him into hearing the words you say in the simplest of noises helped him with that. "yeah i didn't think so, stay there I'll bring you some tea." He says before coming close to the bed to that the wet towel off of your head.
"I don't want to say it Love, but i did tell you this would happen." Another grown comes from you as he takes the mug at your bedside "I know you don't want to hear it but im here to take care of you." Even if you farmed in the rain again a million times he would be there for you always. "I promised in sickness and in health that was our vows."
"Or what ever vows Lewis made up on the spot..." and he cant help but laugh while moving back to the rooms entrance. He knew that even while sick you'd find a way to be a little sarcastic.
"Yes well, i'll be back with your tea Darling." With a small kiss blown your way he leaves to get you your tea.

minors DNI!! 🔞 cw for nsfw stuff and language and kinks bcos i got real yucky with this, you are welcome
update of this post here!!
arkham riddler: my beloved, king daddy of all the daddies, definitely gentle, needs talked into it as a form of stress relief when he's too absorbed in his traps, doesn't like cumming in your mouth because that's not very respectful, will teach you how to do it to his tastes perfectly u-u
"remember we practiced your breathing, you're being so good, this is definitely where your genius lies"
zero year/capullo riddler: disgusting man, desperate for a sloppy bj, will slap your face with his dick/hand, absolutely will call you his slut and likes to finish with his head pressed right to the back of your throat, likes it if you're drooling and spitting his cum out onto your chin at the end, NASTY
"you should be grateful i'm letting you suck my cock, i'm the fucking riddler"
dano riddler: gotta make eye contact with him as he cums on your chest, will hold your hair and push you onto him, really likes his balls squeezed hard too because he's a sucker for pain and punishment
"i'll show you who's in charge here, i'm in control, i'm the boss please"
young justice riddler: whimpering simp of a man, will fall apart in about two seconds, likes you to tell him how big he is, needs constant validation about how pretty his dick is
"was it good for you? am i a good boy?"
gotham riddler: really can do without the sucking or licking, could happily get off on cockwarming in your mouth, otherwise it's too overstimulating, could potentially forget you were even down there lmao
"ah, but do you know why they're called blow jobs? it's very interesting actually! it actually goes back to..."
💚 and cos im feeling extra slutty today and ily 💚
jonathan: another one who needs the eye contact, probably because he likes seeing tears or eye makeup running down your face, definitely likes to see how rough he can be and enjoys the sound of choking for breath
"are you nervous? i would be"
harvey: i don't know if there's anything about harvey to me at least that doesn't scream "i like to put it all the way in and take it all the way out and your mouth better make some obscene pop noise when i do otherwise i'm going to choke you", flips a coin to see if you're spitting or swallowing
"heads or tails, baby? are you taking it in the mouth, or are you going to bend over and show me your ass"
oz: sugar daddy vibes, so his thing is that he likes spoiling you once you've done him a favour, just likes to be slurped on, doesn't even need to come tbh
this is a classy joint babe, be nice to daddy and keep quiet under the table and you can have something nice and shiny afterwards, alright?

What We Do in the Shadows: A Rewatch Part 2
Now for the lgbtqi fans: I wanted to go down the Nandor Guillermo route. One fan asked if straights really didnt read Guillermo as gay originally. I can only speak for my boring straight ass but no I didnt. I just take TV as it comes to me, so I dont read into any of it. But unlike what I hear are some shitty reddit fans, I would strongly disagree that the vampires are straight. They have all basically openly admitted to fucking any and every gender and have bi yearly orgies (which Nadja says is ‘ok’ only lol). In fact you could even argue the only really monogamous leaning one is Nadja, as she tries to resist Jesk and never does more than kiss him. But she doesnt seem to care what Laszlo gets up to (literally any and everything) tho she did seem shocked he was dumb enough to fuck ‘anything with long brown hair’ incl Nandor (2X9). I don’t think u can really roll with this show if you aren’t open to all of that.
As for Guillermo he was the general sexless blob in season 1. Season 2 they seemed to be steering him towards women, having him reference if hed stayed at Panera he might have a gf by now. In The Curse (2X4) hes like the action hero saving Shanice. Which can we stop and discuss how ungodly awful she is as a character? I’ve enjoyed every character on this show except her. She doesnt have a real stutter, shes just really bad at speaking. And shes fucking annoying. God I hate her. He should have let her die. But hes too sweet. Thankfully thats the last we’ve seen of her since.
I remember reading an interview towards the end of Season 2 when the interviewer asked Harvey if Guillermo may get his panera bread girlfriend, or what did he want to see. He said nah, and then stated he was gay. I was a little surprised because I just never thought about it. But after that the writers seemed to go full Nandermo which hey why not?
I think Guillermo as a whole character read as just nothing especially to me was the orgy ep hes just dying of embarrassment (grew up VERY catholic) and then stated he wouldnt be partaking cuz he doesnt do anything with anyone. But then when he ran away to the fake vampire (Collaboration 2X8) he seemed...down with the orgy idea but left his dicky on at the least. BTW contrasting Shanice, the best random character is Sam the Cat and I’d like to see more of him. Of course Nandor has eaten cats so hes prbly wise to stay away. As for them as anything well, unlike the nandermo fans Im not holding much hope as an actual plot point. I’m convinced Nandor literally sees him as basically one step below Ja-han (his beloved horse). In the first ep of Season 3 Nandor is the only one to really take pity on Guillermo. He had in the past (checking in on him and trying to win him back in 2X8). He warms some raw chicken for him, keeps them all from immediately killing him for a month lol. When they decide not to kill him and four way hypnotize him, Guillermo thanks them and says he sees them as family. Nandor cuts him off and is like ‘yeah no one cares about ur life story.’ When he says his ‘promotion’ isnt much of dick, Nadja states its better than being dead and ‘bloody better’ than being a familiar. So basically to them familiars are all but dead...they think very little of them. This has been stated several times before, which also shows why before Benji we had not met a familiar turned vampire (but Nandor ONLY did it for Guillermo, which was sweet).
When Guillermo does run away again (2X10) Nadja muses this is why you don’t get close to humans, they either leave or die and muses the cameraman looks like he’ll die soon (I think he said he was 27 lol). Living for 700 years really skews your viewpoint. Nadja is prbly about 500 years old (Nandor is 700 and destroyed her village ‘200 years before she was born’) and assuming they had a familiar for at least 50 years thats 10. But they went thru 10 like in 2019 lololol so shes prbly even more jaded than the avg vampire.
Ja-han (John but basically ‘my universe’ according to people who speak Persian) was Nandor’s horse he loved so much it kept his spirit from moving on. I get it...I tried picturing being in a survival setting and having to kill one of my cats for food. I’d rather die. So hes braver than I am. (Yes Im sure my cats would eat me if it came down to it but their welcome to it).
So we basically open Season 3 on 11 years of Guillermo being there, and Nandor mostly missing him for his slave duties at first, then kinda actually caring about him. I just really vibe it as like your pet, you’re special little guy who is not on your level. I do think when S3 opens and Guillermo references codependency, I do think thats for ALL of them. Some of those assassins were nowhere near Nandor (clean more quietly Im trying to sleep!) but he still saved Laszlo and Nadja.
Its in ep 2 with the cloak Im convinced Guillermo actually realized he cares about Nandor in a more than boss/friend way. He seems shocked when Meg suggests that. What he made of those thoughts afterwards we don’t really know. But when Gail enters the picture again I think he realizes he might need to do with it sooner than later, especially when the ring is brought out. By the Casino ep Guillermo is about to state hes gay before he gets cut off.
I dont think Nandor even realized he fully was in crisis until they ascended the council. Nadja asks wtf is wrong with him, given his love of ceremony (all mail opened in the fancy room) and now hes just mush. He, like Guillermo, seemed confused. Also like Guillermo, he seemed to not look in the house, but outward.
I dont put much stock in that dick fondling scene (omfg that was a ride...and I think mostly fully had us distracted from the actual main plot point). Guillermo finds semen everywhere (2X9 Witches) and MAKES A BUSINESS OFF OF IT. He was also tasked with the orgy prep and I cant imagine Nandor put all those dildos on his own (boy theres a scene we could have used seeing lololol). Someone on here noted he had the dupe body and broke the door down as Nandor was plowing Gail. So I think dick size isnt news to Guillermo...never mind the pantsless dancing in the Gail ep. Someone also said they thought the esteemed vampires heard Guillermo and Nandor arguing (heightened senses) so the fondling scene was just to fuck with him. I like that theory...it vibes with canon. Also very David Cross thing to do.
If all the footage from the preview ad is new, I think the sexy fight scene between Guillermo and Nandor is about him proposing to Gail yet again. Because theres a shot of that and according to Nadja he does that shit all the time. Maybe Gail accepts. Guillermo would not be thrilled (guardian of his heart after all). Also frankly traveling alone is enough of a reason...this man literally didnt know how to pay at a grocery store cash wrap (first ep). How he’d make it is beyond me. I dont think he could see Delaware on his own and be okay lololol.
If there is to be any Nandermo I think it would be next season. Guillermo is his bodyguard but the vampires all constantly forget it and only rarely treat him as above a familiar (basically a slave that shouldnt be seen or heard). Guillermo would have to do something to really put him on equal footing before I think Nandor would even acknowledge that possibility. The fight could do it...someone here noted they would be pretty equally matched (Nandor has super vampire strength and Guillermo is crazy vampire killing talented). Probably one of the only times Nandor looked genuinely proud of him is when he was full vampire rampage in the finale of season 2 (look out behind you!) It was short lived tho (who cares you didnt pick up the fucking laundry lololol).
Whelp 4 more days. I’ll prbly do one more rewatch. God I love this show. Next year wont be soon enough!

Nightwing BTHB
Tumblr media
X/Completed /// Fire/Requested /// Diamond/Next
Warnings: fear toxin, angst, normal DC things really. This one is actually pretty tame.
Prompt: Big Brother Instinct
Gosh, it's been awhile since I last tortured my boy Dick. I missed this.
-o-o-o-o-
Dick is screaming, writhing, begging for it to stop, begging for Bruce or Batman or someone to save him, oh God someone save him, make it stop, make it stop make it stop. Tears run down his face and his hands are constantly jerking and flexing against the velcro restraints as his fingers claw at the white blankets below him, there's red under his fingernails from when he had tried to claw his own eyes out.
Tim can hardly stand it, it feels like his heart has been ripped out and stomped all over. It should be him. It should be Tim in that room strapped down like an insane patient while Alfred and Bruce desperately try to find a cure for Scarecrow's newest fear toxin. That sniper was aiming towards Red Robin, not Robin, not Orphan, not Red Hood, not Nightwing. Towards him. It would have hit him if Nightwing hadn't suddenly pushed Tim out of the way. Tim remembers falling to the ground, scraping his elbows and knees, and turning to see a beautifully feathered dart sticking out of Nightwing's neck. It flashed in Tim's mind that colorful things usually mean dangerous, poisonous, but that flew from the forefront of his mind when Nightwing stumbled and paled, eyes wide.
"F-fear toxin," he had said.
He was fine for the first few minutes, only slightly shaking when Bruce sped in with the Batmobile. Halfway back towards the Batcave, Nightwing was panting and blinking way too much, tears were running down his face and his hands were white knuckled around his own arms. He accidentally referred to Bruce as "Tati" when Bruce asked him how he was doing and everyone knew that it was going to get worse from there. Nightwing considers Bruce a father, sure, but there is only one person who he calls that.
When they pulled into the cave, Hood and Orphan were both holding Nightwing down as he screamed and screamed and screamed, his fingers were bloodied and red, blood dripped down from his wide, terrified eyes.
"Stop!" Dick begs from the other room, his voice breaking at an octave higher than what it should be. Tim flinches and wishes, with a flash of guilt, that be could put a pair of headphones in right now. He needs to find where Scarecrow is and how he escaped Arkham without anyone noticing. Bruce has a strict no headphones in the Cave rule, that was set before Red Robin joined the cause when Jason missed the red alert one time because he was jamming out to Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy with his cool new iPod.
So no headphones, Tim is forced to listen to Dick tear his own vocal chords out in his fear.
Tim clicks on a link, then another, and another, Dick is reduced to sobs an hour in, oddly silent after another, then back to screaming. The toxin is harsh, working randomly, gifting Dick with moments of clarity and then ripping it away by showing him Harvey Dent and a baseball bat, or Mary and John falling to their deaths, or something else that Tim can't entirely guess. He hears a woman's name, Dick screams about her and sobs, something about Blockbuster's death. He struggles so hard against the restraints when he begins to wail about the Forever Evil disaster, about Luther, about a pill, about how he couldn't breathe.
Tim wishes Bruce would just knock him out. It's making it hard to work and it keeps pulling at the back of his head that he should be back there instead of Dick. Tim's probably the best off from his brothers, he came and went so quickly that he hardly had time to make enemies or make a name for himself. Scarecrow was in jail most the time, Joker was uninterested in killing another Robin quite yet, Poison Ivy or Ra's or any of the big leagues just didn't seem to want any big moves quite yet and most of Tim's career as Robin was spent dealing with normal people who wanted to get themselves rich in various unoriginal ideas before Damian came and he left to the Titans.
Dick's been through it all. He's been tortured by the hands of the Joker, he's been beaten half to death by Two-Face, he's been drowned and bound and kicked down and kidnapped and buried alive and so many other things that it isn't fair. It isn't fair that Dick is back to this and Tim is happily doing his sweet detective work without a scratch on his body. It should be Tim in there, screaming about the night his parents died or that one time Tim was almost killed or when he was held in captivity after he found out he was still alive, alone and scared and hardly able to move a foot in any direction, while all his family thought he was dead and no one is going to come for him.
His fingers hurt. He's found out nothing but that Scarecrow hasn't actually escaped from Arkham and that the toxin recipe was smuggled out to one of Scarecrows loyal henchmen. With that discovery, the Arkham doctors were informed and they gave him a slap on the wrist and moved him to a more secure cell in the prison.
And that's it. There's no actual recipe for the fear toxin, there's no identity for the henchman, there's nothing useful.
He hears movement behind him as he watches through the security cameras of the location Nightwing was shot for the fifth time in ten minutes. He doesn't turn to look, he knows it's Bruce back at the lab trying to figure out a cure for Dick's fear. Dick is silent, probably going through a more lucid few minutes, giving Alfred and Bruce time to try and cure him, to take blood samples without the needle missing or asking him how he's feeling and all of that.
There's clinking, chemicals being mixed together in silence. How long has it been? Almost twelve hours. The sun is probably reaching its highest point in the sky. Kids are probably going to school, people to work, life beginning to make noise. They don't know that one of their beloved heroes is living each and every one of his nightmares below Wayne Manor.
A hand falls onto Tim's shoulder and he almost jumps out of his skin. He spins around to see Jason standing there, hair sweaty and sticking to his forehead from the recent removal of his helmet. He's smirking slightly, and Tim wonders how anyone could be even slightly smiling at a time like this.
"What did the computer ever do to you?" Jason asks and Tim frowns.
"What?"
"You're glaring at it like it peed in your root beer."
"First of all, that's a stupid thing to say, second of all, I'm not glaring."
Jason let's out a chuckles and there's a small whimper from where the medical ward is. Tim takes a deep breath and turns back to the computer. The screaming should start up again soon. Bruce swears and grabs whatever he is working on and sprints to the med bay.
"Hey, stop that," Jason says and Tim wants to groan.
"Stop what?"
"Copying me, I'm the one whose angry and annoyed all the time."
"Shut up," Tim growls and clicks on a new video link. He has to find the perp, find the recipe. Dick is breathing hard and Alfred is whispering comforts.
"Look," Jason says and he walks around the chair and literally sits on the keyboard of the computer.
"Dude!"
"Listen," Jason repeats and folds his arm across his chest. There's a continual "f" being typed into the computer and Tim wishes Jason would just get out of the way. "You're not the first one Dick took a hit for."
"Get off the computer," Tim hisses.
"He's done it for me, he's done it for Bruce, hell I bet he's done it loads of time for the demon spawn. I don't know about Cass though, but he probably has. That guy would jump in front of bullet for the dogs, Tim. So stop beating yourself up."
Tim remains silent, he can't find the words to say. He knows Jason is right, Dick has a… not a self sacrificing complex but a big brother complex. He thinks he should be the one to protect everyone, that he's the oldest and therefore he has to do everything in his power to make sure everyone is okay and happy and alive, no matter the cost, even if the cost is his own life and sanity. Though, just because Jason is right doesn't mean he's going to rise Jason's already high ego to tell him so.
Jason smirks anyway, taking Tim's silence as a victory. He jumps off the computer and folds his arm across his chest, looking down at Tim and Tim glares right back. Jason's smile only falters for a second when Dick suddenly let's out a terrified scream.
He clears his throat as Bruce yells something and Alfred snaps something back. It's clear that Jason is struggling just as much as Tim. Damian and Cass were both probably suffering as well, but Bruce had sent them back out into the city to look for leads. Tim remained back to do research and Jason because Bruce doesn't trust him outside in Gotham without Dick's or himself to supervise quite yet even though Jason, by all means, could leave right now if he wanted. Tim wonders why Jason is willingly staying.
Dick lets out a whimper, he's starting to beg, saying no, I'm sorry, he can't be dead, get off me, I'm poison, I'm scared, leave him alone, I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry, let me go, I don't want to die, Bruce IM SORRY, and Tim doesn't know that he's hyper focusing on those words until Jason snaps a finger in front of his eyes. Tim focuses on Jason's face, how it's tight and the smile is the furthest thing from loose and genuine.
"Here's what's going to happen," Jason says and Dick's voice breaks in the middle of another scream, "Alfred and Bruce are going to find the cure, Dick is going to calm down, Bruce and Alfred are going to give him a 30 to 45 minutes lecture, then he will let us in to see him. We will go in, and you'll jump into Dick's arms and tell him to never do that again and he'll smile stupidly and say no promises."
Tim reaches up to wipe at his eyes.
"He'll be okay," Jason says as Dick begs Alfred to not touch him and screams as they don't listen, "he always is."
-o-o-o-o-
"He wants to see you," Bruce says and Tim feels like he's going to melt into the chair. Finally, finally Cass and Damian found the henchman and got the recipe to the toxin (after beating the man within a half inch of his life, of course) and Bruce had finally managed to make a cure. It took an hour for Dick to stop crying out or sobbing and shaking, thirty minutes for Bruce to yell his ear off, fifteen for Alfred to give Dick that "I'm very disappointed in you" talk, and another hour for Dick to be left to rest.
All in all, it's been almost sixteen hours since Dick was shot with the dart. Sixteen hours filled with terror and tears and helplessness.
And finally, finally Tim is allowed to go into the med bay and check to see Dick is okay with his own eyes.
Tim stands from the couch. He had been moved upstairs for dinner a few hours before while Bruce remained down in the cave to make sure Dick was stable, they have been banned going down by Alfred's stern glare, not even Damian attempted to go back down after being caught trying to the first time.
Going down into the cave feels like Tim has been sucked into a horror movie. Doubts run in his mind and he can't even place them. It's just a constant anxiety mining at the top of his skull. That all flies away the moment Tim enters the med bay.
Dick's there, and he looks close to normal. His cheeks are red and his eyes are a bit puffy but his //smile, his smile is what makes him Dick. It's lopsided, showing off white teeth, crinkling the corners of his eyes. No one has a smile like Dick Grayson.
"Hey buddy," Dick says, his arms open wide, inviting, and Tim feels a pinprick of dejavu but he pushes that aside and runs into Dick's arms. Dick laughs and embraces Tim in a strong grasp. He's warm. Tim's face is wet.
"Don't ever do that again," Tim says, his voice shakes.
Dick laughs and ruffles Tim's hair. "No promises."

im not well versed in crossover AU's in general but go off about them anyway lay it on me
//screams// Guys, Tea is a Literal Blessing™ and I absolutely don’t deserve all this validation but I will soak up on it.
So, the other day I was going through my Ao3 and I realized literally everything I do, ever, is a crossover, so I guess that’s kind of my thing now. Room Enough AU, however, is literally The Crossover™, you know? I have to admit I’ve been working on plotting it for way too many years (I think it was 2016; I’m not gonna lie, it’s been a hot minute) so it’s so much bigger in my head than what I actually have written. Some of the info I’ve managed to actually jot down somewhere is in this little tag right here, but I’m here to provide the basics on what Room Enough AU is and why it’s so important to me.
Under the cut, to keep your dashes clean, my lovelies!
Room Enough for All of Us is a crossover AU between Marvel and DC (because who didn’t see that coming, right?). While most of the crossovers for these franchises I’ve seen and read all start with Bruce and Clark meeting Steve and Tony (who, arguably, are each other’s counterparts) and while I absolutely adore the idea of billionaire Bruce Wayne becoming friends with billionaire Tony Stark, and Clark and Steve bonding over, you know, being seen as literal beings of perfection, Room Enough AU (which we’ll shorten as REAU from now on, although that’s a name I’ve never used for it, but there’s always a first for everything, you know?) actually starts with Tony Stark, betrayed and broken after IM, meeting (or rather, meeting again) one very problematic and highly-skilled pilot, Harold Jordan.
After the events of IM and Tony being betrayed by one of the people he trusted most in the world, Stark Industries starts undergoing heavy restructuring (am I using the right word? Google Translate says so) and among all of these shifts and changes, Pepper insists that he gets a new pilot for his private plane. He goes to Ferris Air, of course, because it’s in California and he’s had contracts with them for years, and when he gets there, there’s this one roudy pilot who manages to not only evade all of the Stark Training Drones in the air, but actually destroys all of them in the process. Tony wants this pilot. He does. He recognizes under-paid talent when he sees it.
Hal has absolutely zero idea of what is happening when Tony offers him the position as his private pilot. Jordan is not all that enthusiastic about being some rich kid’s pilot-for-hire, but after the stunt he’s just pulled? He really should think about getting a new job. Hal doesn’t say yes outright, of course not, he’s got more dignity than that, but Tony just won’t let up.
Not only is Tony Stark some rich billionaire he doesn’t want to be working for either, he’s also one of Hal’s one-night-stands from two years ago. Is Tony fazed at all by this? He is not! Tony Stark is stubborn and he doesn’t care about anything other than getting this man a better salary.
Tony spends about 300 weeks trying to get Hal to actually agree to the job, it’s ridiculous. His gifts are expensive, and they get more extravagant the more time goes on. He even gets Hal Captain rank back for him (if that allowed? I do not know, I have yet to research on this, this is actually a very new development born in the REAU discord chat). Hal draws the line when a Rolex ends up at his home (one of the fancy, classic ones, too, with the green cover) and Jordan calls Tony to tell him to back off.
Twenty minutes later, Hal is agreeing to working for Stark. Carol fired his ass after that whole fiasco with the drones (”They were due for an upgrade, anyways! They’re old and I could do so much better, Ferris! It’s not a big deal.”) so he has to find a way to pay the goddamn bills or move in with Barry, and he doesn’t want to intrude on his best friend like that.
Plus, he loves the sky. Maybe this job isn’t so bad.
Against all odds, and with a lot of difficulties and obstacles, Tony and Hal actually start bonding. Except, whoops, Tony is dying from palladium poisoning, and just as our favorite green boy is warming up to the idea of not only being Tony’s pilot but also his friend, Stark suddenly does a 180 on him and completely backs away.
(It doesn’t help Hal’s confusion that Tony spent the first few weeks of his employment literally changing everything about his life. He gives his company away to Pepper Potts, starts a mentor-apprentice program in which he is the mentor and this girl from Mexico is the apprentice, and just generally starts becoming a Good Man™, in Hal’s eyes.)
Long story short (to wrap this one up, because I could go on for years) Hal finds out Tony is dying with a little help from Natasha (who Hal decidedly stops liking when he finds out she’s been lying to Tony, but who he’ll warm up to again, eventually, and because she loves Barry a whole lot and keeps his boyfriend safe and happy) and then it’s a race against time to save Stark’s life.
And because there is no one smarter (or faster) that Hal Jordan knows, he calls his good buddy The Flash into Tony’s Malibu home and tells Stark that Barry will help him or “so help me god, Anthony Edward Stark, I will find a way to bring your back from death to kill you myself”. When Tony is saved and Barry and him have managed to destroy his entire home, Hal feels like he can breathe again, and Allen smiles at him this sort of way when he catches his shoulders lose all the tension. (”wHAT? WHAT IS IT BARRY?” “You wanted to keep him safe” “He pays my salary, of course I wanted to keep him alive” “Harold” “Bartholomew”)
So, Tony and Hal? They’re really, really good friends. Hal would probably die for Tony, and Tony would absolutely lay down on the wire to let Hal pass (take that, Steve). From the outside, they’re an unlikely pai, except when you look at it closer, they’re literally the only way universes could collide. Barry actually saw it coming from a mile away, but Hal refused to let Tony into his life (Hal is used to everyone leaving; Barry is the exception, of course he is, but that’s Barry there’s no one purer, nicer, or kinder in this whole wide world).
After that, it’s just a lot of JL/Avengers shenanigans, mostly around Barry, Hal, Tony and Steve, once he comes along (and he and Barry aren’t at each other’s throats anymore). It follows losely through IM2, Avengers, probably IM3 (because Harvey Keener) and CA:WS (Barry and Steve bonding!), only to diverge somewhere between that and Age of Ultron (that doesn’t exist, to be all that much honest). I’ve plotted some of the things I want to happen, but since I’m messy and don’t have enough attention span to STAY FOCUSED, I’m still trying to figure out a lot of things.
I’m probably going into Avengers Assemble at some point and work with that. There are some DC storylines I think would fit nicely in there, but I have big gaps in my comic knowledge, so I really have to search for the right things to put.
The funny thing about REAU, however, is how much it has intoxicated every single of my other aus. All of the works that you can find in my Ao3 (right over here) are different iterations of this crossover, brought into different scenarios.
We have Coffee Shop AU, my first non-powered baby whom I love and cherish very much and hopefully will finish one day. We have Hotel AU which is so weird and I have no idea where it came from, but it’s there and it’s some very sweet Clintasha. There’s Prom AU/Childhood Friends AU! That’s sweet and fluffy and features sticker stars and red crayons. We have dumb diner au! The newest published addition to the line of non-powered aus! They’re all great, they’re mostly always the same characters, the same groups of friends (in most non-powered AUs, Steve and Barry don’t hate each other. In fact, usually they know each other from a very long time, along with Bucky, and Steve protects Barry with every ounce of whoop-ass he is) and there’s always some cute-meet that ends up in halbarry ending up together (because yes, they’re all mostly halbarry with a side of stony bcs I’m trash) I’m currently writing blubarry au for halbarry week (which I miscalculated) and it’s actually turned into Paramedic/Blubarry AU and it has absolutely gotten out of control (I’ve finished what could be a first instalment at 13k) and there’s aladdin au for stony that’s still in process and is also a crossover.
Aaaaaaand that’s mostly it, jsjsjsjsj I’m sorry this was so long! I’m so passionate about REAU and all my non-powered aus that it’s overwhelming some times!
Also, that post you did about Natasha? I felt that. My favorite Natasha is the Natasha who gets to be dorky, and cute, and who laughs at and with her friends. My favorite Natasha takes one look at Barry and goes “this one is mine now and if you hurt him I’ll make sure you pay dire consequences”. My favorite Natasha is Natasha painting Tony’s nails on girl’s night (that Tony always crashes, but he also sponsors the whole thing, so it’s alright). My favorite Natasha laughs like a hyenna when Clint makes a dent into their wall because he’s an idiot. My favorite Natasha is Dinah’s best woman, standing right by her, and wiping tears from her eyes without anyone seeing because she still wants to look at least a little bit tough. My favorite Natasha is so beloved by everyone who meets her and I’m !!!!! crying !!!!!

hellooooo thank you so much!!! im so glad you’re back, i’ve missed you so much!!!!
1. name your top three favourite songs: oh jeez alright so i think it’s…… in no particular order because i’m too weak to —- them lmao - ….why even try by hippo campus  - i don’t know why is this song so incredibly important to me, i discovered it like, i think a month ago or so? or maybe longer. but i wasn’t at like, the brightest place in my life and i was drawing while listening to it on repeat and kept listening to it for like, four days straight basically without getting tired of it, and it calmed me down so incredibly much, then i listened to it on the bus on my way to exams and back while reading, and i still listen to it every few days and feel so peaceful and transparent and understood, like the lyrics are fairly depressing but i’d found incredible comfort in them,  ‘on and on, the feelings burst and then they fall - till later on we won’t get back to patch things up’ like??? and the whole lyrics, what it speaks about, it’s so definitive, conclusive, irreversibly fatal, like there’s no going back but also no need to worry about things anymore, nothing will be the same as it used to be, but somehow the song was what made me cope with the fact and helped me find perhaps a more optimistic approach to it all, even if at the time it was more of a medium which i explored the lost, wandering, searching kind of sadness through. it’s not just the lyrics though, it’s the feel of the whole song, the guitar and bass and the tempo and all those little unique elements (the instrumental part before the bridge!!!!!!) and even if i won’t be listening to it in a month, a year, ten years, i think it’ll always remain special and unique to me and will always speak the same language as the part of my heart that had needed it so desperately at the time!!
god, how do i name my other top favourite songs after this dksfjhkdf
probably star treatment by arctic monkeys - we’d waited so long for the album even though we made peace with the fact that am was the last thing we’ll ever hear, and i lost my shit when i found out about the news that there was indeed another album coming!!! and then the tiny tbhc snippet on youtube aaaah i remember learning the guitar riff to it immediately and playing it over and over!!! and then we listened to it in my room when it came out and i was stunned the second i heard the opening piano and the backing vocals, and then the ‘as we gaze skyward, ain’t it dark early?’ part towards the end RUINED me and i still cry my eyes out every time i listen to it…. so yeah. am still do really own my ass sddfdf
and the third one……… hhhhhh how am i supposed to choose. probably something off everything you’ve come to expect by tlsp. the entire album is Packed with absolute total fucking bangers and it collectively destroyed us (also the whole tour…………..) probably pattern or element of surprise!!!! or aviation or the title track or used to be my girl or the bourne identity ( oof ) or hhhhhh i really can’t choose, let’s just say that the entire album shares the 3rd position lmao
4. favourite album cover: oh i like this ask a lot!!! i rly love the cover of revolver by the beatles, it’s so iconic and i adore the style of it, the cover of tranquility base hotel + casino by am bcs,.. c’mon. (i actually made my own version of the model alex made sdkfjhf it was so fun!!! but my hands almost died) andddd is this it obviously, definitely maybe by oasis, and the cover of cullah the wild by cullah is so cool!! (he’s a practically unknown 28yo artist and he has such cool and creative songs!! it’s a mixture between like, alternative blues and alternative hip hop and something uniquely weird and experimental lmao and he releases an album on his birthday every year for free and i love him so much!! he definitely deserves more recognition)
Tumblr media
this is what the cover looks like!! (and ‘where you do belong’ off the album is my absolute all time favourite)
12. what’s your favourite era of music: gotta be 50′s, 80′s, 90′s and 00′s, esp the alternative and garage rock scene
14. do you play any instruments? i do!! i play guitar, (acoustic only but god i want to get an electric one so bad) bass guitar, ukulele and i used to play soprano flute in elementary school lmao
38. what’s a song that has inspired you: i usually pick songs that inspire me, give me certain imagery or provoke certain mood in me and just put them on repeat while i’m writing, so it’s gotta be…………………….. why even try by hippo campus (god this is getting embarrassing how many times am i gonna mention this song sdfdfsdfkdfjf but it’s SO AMAZING and so important to me), to bring you my love by pj harvey!!!! set your arms down, heads up and so good by warpaint, packt like sardines in a crushed tin box, life in a glasshouse, you and whose army?, i might be wrong by radiohead, the entirety of carrie & lowell by sufjan stevens, esp blue bucket of gold and john my beloved recently, and the cmbyn soundtrack by him: mystery of love, visions of gideon and futile devices!!
50 - put all of your songs on shuffle and list the first ten! - alright! so -
daydreaming - radiohead
heavy storm - first aid kit
underneath the sky - oasis
la parisienne - zaz
she came in through the bathroom window - the beatles
we no who y r - nick cave & the bad seeds
blue bucket of gold - sufjan stevens (oh hello!!)
the orange monkey - pj harvey
je hais les dimanches - édith piaf
a place i know - cullah (hmmm)
thank you so much for the ask!!!!! it Really kept me entertained for a while lmao thank you!!!

Op-Ed: Inconspicuous, Not Insignificant
I hope you have paid attention to the countless accusation’s athletes have made regarding sexual assault in their respective sports. You likely have seen social media platforms discussing the aspects of these accusations. The perpetrator could have been a coach, staff member, or a fellow athlete. You may have heard of these acts, but you probably did not go and research any particular case. Chances are, you also did not reflect on any of the significant number of cases to help yourself bring awareness of sexual assault within your sport of choice, whether you watch or participate.
The cases you have seen are the tip of the iceberg compared to the total amount of cases of sexual assault in sports. So many cases go unreported and unnoticed.  Why is that?  Assault charges and cases in sports go unnoticed possibly because it is difficult to determine exactly how many cases of sexual assault are not reported by the victims.  However, given the lack of available statistics, a number of anonymous surveys suggest the problem is much bigger than is being reported. An article titled Sexual Assault of Young Athletes stated, “2%-8% of children are currently being sexually assaulted in the context of sports”. That data demonstrates that approximately 2 out of every 25 minors in sports are sexually assaulted or harassed in some way. It is very difficult to get exact data on sexual assault at college level sports because there are certain laws that do not allow that information to be open to the public. But with some of the cases discussed later, it shows that sexual assault is happening at that level, as well.
It could also possibly be that there is little press on these cases because no charges have been filed against the perpetrator. Some victims, understandably, want to go through the process of identification and reporting quickly and quietly. But it also may suggest no one really cares about sexual assault in sports. Or maybe no one is holding these perpetrators accountable for their disgusting actions at all. Or there could possibly be some sort of bias towards these victims of sexual abuse in their sport.
We may never know what is truly going on with sexual assault in sports because of the very small number of reported cases, but we can hope that people are beginning to awaken to an understanding that these vile actions come with vile consequences. We need more press on these topics because it will be the only way for athletes, and the communities surrounding them, to truly learn that they are being seen and heard and allow those indirectly affected to reflect on the problem of these sexual assaults in sports cases.
The Opposite Argument
Some may say that there are good and valid reason why these situations and cases of sexual assault in sports are not and should not be in the mainstream media. Their main reasoning seems to argue that giving the cases of sexual assault in sports a prominent space in public reporting would fundamentally change the way we look at sports or perceive certain athletes.
We idolize our sports heroes, including coaches, and though we know they are human and fallible we absolutely don’t want them to be so.  Indeed, in many ways our society has chosen to use sports as an escape from some of the harsh realities of life.  These instances of abuse, then, invade that ‘escape.’  In addition, some might also argue that we are actually protecting the victims by discouraging publicity.
My Argument
“You Either Die A Hero, Or You Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain”
— Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight
The answer to the opposing argument is, yes, of course, more publicity is going to change how we look at sports and certain athletes. When there is justice for these victims, especially where the perpetrator is otherwise well-loved by the media and spectators, the community should roundly turn on them and condemn their actions because their “god”-like status is a revocable gift that has meaning and consequences.
It can and must change for the better. That day will only be worth celebrating when the perpetrators are banned from their sport, lose their job, tarnish their reputation, and/or have extreme media backlash. If an athlete, coach, or staff member does choose to sexually assault someone, they deserve to be punished. Such punishment should come swiftly and completely.
The most publicly, well-known, sexual assault cases in sports are cases that could have some sort of “appeal” factor.  These cases might draw more of an audience than cases of sexual assault that do not have that same variable. The factor could include a celebrity athlete being the predator or the victim, the situation or event that relates to the assault, or anything that will make a good headline.
Throughout my time researching cases, observing people’s and the media’s responses to sexual assault in sports, it seems as though there might be some sort of bias. There is a positive bias that could be towards sports, the positivity of sports, and what sports do for individuals.
With the love of this sport, there absolutely is a bias that blinds what is happening behind closed doors in their beloved sport: sexual assault, harassment and discrimination. Some try very hard to “look on the bright side” of everything and only look at the positive. What I have theorized is that some almost purposefully “skip over” or do not look at the information that could possibly change the overall view of sports.
Those individuals do not want change in viewpoints because they do not want anything to “distract” them from what is really important, the actual playing of the sports. The assault and harassment forces people to look at sports for what they really can be, flawed. Just like any system that is praised for its excellence.
We ultimately have to change this “look on the bright side” view because it is invalidating these victims’ trauma and enabling further abuse. Those who have been assaulted by the coaches, fellow athletes, or sport staff members are looking for justice. We have to care, show empathy, and change our mindset so we can prevent any further form of assault or harassment in these sports.
Larry Nassar v. Scott Shaw
The main difference between the sexual assault case of Larry Nassar and Scott Shaw is how widespread their actions are known. Even if someone is not part of the sports community, they inevitably know what happened with Larry Nassar. Even if someone is part of the sports community, they likely don’t know what happened with Scott Shaw.
Larry Nassar was a U.S. Gymnastics physician from Michigan. A lawsuit filed in 2016, which became more public in 2018, alleged that he sexually assaulted over “250 women and girls dating back to 1992”. Nassar is now serving his life sentence for those crimes.
Scott Shaw was an athletic trainer for the women’s swimming team at San Jose University. He has been accused of sexual assault by over 17 female swimmers since 2009. There have been NO charges filed against h im and he WAS NOT fired from his position as an athletic trainer. He actually resigned from this position on September 2nd, after old and new allegations were revisited by a new administrator.
To be certain, there is a difference between the numbers of females sexually assaulted by each of these men. Does the number of victims really define how much sympathy towards the perpetrator we show? Are we really talking about showing sympathy towards sexual predators in specific sports? Why is the media so focused on numbers? Even one assaulted athlete should engender significant community outrage.  Why are overwhelming and shocking numbers required?  Are we so desensitized that only catastrophic loss is worthy of attention?
Heightened media coverage of these sexual assault cases does not mean that it is the “worst case we have seen so far”. Heightened media coverage merely means that there is a certain aspect of the assaults that is eye catching to most of the population. In Larry Nassar’s sexual assault case, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and Simone Biles are some of the most well-known Olympic gymnasts in the world who came forward in the media with their experience of assault with Larry Nassar.
Scott Shaw’s case did not grab most of the media’s attention because there have been no official charges filed, no legally recognized “proof”, and no current investigations. Therefore, no appeal. Seriously? We can do better.
What follows is what media is not showing you. Even though these cases are not mainstream, they are still so extremely important.
Jerry Sandusky v. “The Unknown”
Jerry Sandusky was the founder of the organization The Second Mile, which helped care for young boys who have an absent father figure in their life. He was also the former President of Penn State University. He was convicted of 8 counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, 7 counts of indecent assault, 1 count of criminal intent to commit indecent assault, 9 counts of unlawful contact with minors, 10 counts of corruption of minors and 10 counts of endangering the welfare of children. That is 45 total charges against him.
I am comparing the case of Jerry Sandusky to “The Unknown” (an “as yet undisclosed” assault).  Based on what we do know, there is inevitably another case like it, but no one has talked about it and there is no media attention about it. We know that there are more sexual assault cases in the United States and in the world that have not yet come to light. That is the media’s fault for not digging into and fully covering these topics and our fault for not insisting that they include such stories. We absolutely must talk about these incidents otherwise they are going to be repeated endlessly without any meaningful change.
High profile cases shine a light on what the public might actually be interested in, a compelling story (often defined by its extreme and horrific level of tragedy). It absolutely can be something to tell your children for which to watch out. Something that will scare them enough so that it impacts their child to the point where they will learn from it. Something that will teach them how to respond to these types of dangerous situations. This is a positive side effect of a terrible case, but can it really be that this is the only way to educate and reach large numbers of people? I hope that is not true.  We do this work to ensure it will never be true.  We have to learn to make ourselves care about the smaller and less high-profile cases or we will never stop the big ones.
What You Can Do to Help This Cause
The best thing for you to do to help this cause is talk to every athlete you know and those close to them about this problem and how to identify and avoid it.  In addition, do your research and write columns, letters to the editor, or suggestions to media outlets to bring attention to the countless cases of sexual assault. Just because these cases might be inconspicuous does not mean the cases should remain insignificant in our consciousness. We must demand that the media and ourselves care about these sexual assault cases in sports, or else nothing will change in our society. Change is necessary to prevent our children, and their children from being put in these traumatic positions.

Glenn Close: You lose power if you get angry
From vengeful mistress to Agatha Christie matriarch: the actor talks about Harvey Weinstein, mental illness and growing up in a cult
Tumblr media
Glenn Close and I sit at the corner of a large boardroom table in an intimidatingly minimalist office on the 14th floor of a Los Angeles talent agency. Its the kind of environment in which Patty Hewes, the ruthless lawyer Close played in Damages for five seasons, would feel at home and Im almost waiting for her to stand up, slam both hands on the table and shout, Ill rip your face off or any of the other terrifying put-downs that defined her double Emmy award-winning performance.
But Close is in high spirits and radiates such warmth I barely notice the chill from the tower blocks air-con. After we fiddle with the settings on our swivel chairs, which are so high they make anyone under six foot kick their legs like a child on a swing, the 70-year-old, six-time Oscar nominee and star of stage, television and film starts telling me about her dreams. I have had a lot recently, full of this wonderful love for a younger man. The dreams just keep coming and I wake up thinking, that was wonderful! It wasnt necessarily us doing the sexual act, just the feeling of love.
With her white hair cut to a sharp crop, and wearing a relaxed navy blazer, chinos and black scarf on account of the arctic corporate temperature, she looks stylish and fit. I have never felt better in my life, and I am, like, 70, she says. Im really a late bloomer.
She says she feels a disconnect between how she sees herself and how people may view me when I walk down the street, like: Theres an old lady. You know, there is now this cult of the model. Everyone on the red carpet is made into a model. That is very hard to not play into I have a bit of podge I am trying to get rid of, but its hard. I just think, Oh fuck, Ive been doing this my whole life! But the irony is, you just get better and better with age. You dont feel less alive or less sexy.

In Agatha Christies Crooked House. Photograph: Nick Wall
We are here to talk about Crooked House, the Agatha Christie adaptation debuting on Channel 5, before its theatrical release, in which Close plays Lady Edith, a matriarch of a very dysfunctional family. Close says, Christies grandson came to the set and he validated the fact that it was her favourite book, and the one that had never been adapted. He said when she handed it to the publisher, she was told she had to change the ending, because it was too upsetting and controversial. She refused. Its still pretty controversial.
This production, co-written by Julian Fellowes, might not be as spendy as Kenneth Branaghs $55m Murder On The Orient Express, but the ensemble cast is equally starry: joining Close are Gillian Anderson, Max Irons, Terence Stamp and Christina Hendricks. Close presides over her co-stars with gravitas and grace, in an understated performance that finds the humour in an otherwise bleak setup. But youd expect nothing less from the actor whose 40 years in the business started with star turns in Broadway productions (she won a Best Actress Tony in 1983 for Tom Stoppards The Real Thing). Her first film role, at the age of 35, was with Robin Williams in The World According To Garp, for which she received an Oscar nomination as she did for her supporting roles in The Big Chill and The Natural. Her performances in Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons and Albert Nobbs, about the life of a transgender butler in late 19th century Ireland, which she also co-wrote, racked up further Oscar nominations but still no win. This is seen by many as a travesty: Close brings a precision to her film work, honed through her years on stage. She has that rare taut quality Jack Nicholson also has it where you believe that beneath the steely control she is capable of snapping at any moment.
It was this that led Andrew Lloyd Webber to cast her in 1993 as the tragic silent movie star Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard on Broadway. Close reprised the role 23 years later, getting her old costumes out of storage (she has kept all her costumes and recently donated the collection to a university in Indiana) for its revival in Londons West End.

As Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction: Clearly she had mental health issues. Photograph: Rex/Shutterstock
But it was her Oscar-nominated turn as Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction in 1987 that proved career-defining. Thirty years on, Close still counts Forrest as the character of whom she feels most fond; she has admitted to fighting tooth and nail against the films eventual denouement, which turned the character into a bunny-boiling psychopath and Close into the casting directors go-to woman on the verge for years afterwards. Now we have the vocabulary to talk about these things, clearly she had mental health issues, she says.
Close sits regally still as she speaks, emphasising her points by leaning forward and locking eyes. Shes comfortable with silences and often takes a theatrical beat or two before answering questions. Shes all poise and control, but does she ever lose her temper?
I express my feelings quietly. I am not afraid of confrontation, but I am not particularly good at it. If I get attacked, I am not good at attacking back. There is fight, flight and freeze and I tend to freeze. That is not a strength of mine. I love the fact that my daughter Annie [Starke, an actor] is more of a fighter than I am. She doesnt let people get away with shit. While she agrees that women have a harder time being angry, publicly, than men, she says, I have played a lot of characters, and actually anger makes you lose power. Patty Hewes [in Damages] she hardly ever lost her temper, but when she did, it was very specific. I have always felt you lose power if you get that angry.
The collective outpouring of anger among women in Hollywood right now is something of which Close is acutely aware. She says that sexism in the industry has shifted more slowly than it should have done throughout her career: It took Harvey Weinstein and someone calling him out [for real change to happen]. I know Harvey, and he has never done that to me, but people would say he was a pig. I never knew that it was that bad and I dont personally know anybody who has endured that. I would like to think that I would have done something about it.
We discuss whether its possible to separate the work from the personalities involved in it. News has just broken that House Of Cards will be back for another series without Kevin Spacey, after it was originally canned because of harassment claims brought against its leading man. Close wraps her scarf around her chest and fixes me with her electric eyes. Artists, to make a huge generality, walk on a very thin line. Sometimes, like my beloved friend Robin Williams, who was one step away from madness, whatever makes them a great artist also makes them very complicated human beings. Again, that doesnt mean they can prey on and abuse people.

At the root of the problem of sexism in Hollywood right now is, Close says, biology. I think the way men have treated women, from the beginning of time, is because they have different brains to women. So I am not surprised by it at all. I say to a guy, Tell me the truth, if you see a woman walk into a room, what is the first thought that goes through your head? His answer, always, is, Would I fuck her? It doesnt mean they act on it. If you can evolve into a society where men know that they should not always act on it then there has been a positive revolution. But you cant just say that theyre not going to have the thought that is ridiculous. It also has to be the women, who are not powerful, to be OK to say no and leave the room. I think its unrealistic to say were going to change but we have to evolve.
I ask Close who she thinks is a great man today. She is silent, thinking, for what feels like a full 60 seconds in which I am so tempted to throw out some options: Barack Obama, the Pope, the friendly security guard on reception who let us in
Nelson Mandela, is her final answer, but Im not sure shes convinced. I guess for me, she says, greatness is taking your humanity and still doing the good thing. Its sad to say that there are very few men, who are leaders, who have some sort of moral code that they dont deviate from because of popular opinion.
She thinks we are undergoing a crisis of masculinity: In the public mind, yes. I was outraged when I heard that there was a war against men I was like, are you joking? What do you think has been happening against women for centuries?
Close knows all too well about the misuse of power, because her own upbringing was, as she puts it, complicated. When she was seven, her parents joined a cult. Moral Re-Armament or MRA was a modern, nondenominational movement founded by an American evangelical fundamentalist which extolled the four absolutes: honesty, purity, unselfishness and love. Her father, a physician working in the Congo, sent Close with her brother and two sisters from the family home in Greenwich, Connecticut, to live at the MRA HQ in Caux, Switzerland (Closes mother, Bettine, was a socialite).
She is vague on the details but clear on the impact this experience had on her as a teenager: I was repressed, clueless and guilt-ridden. The timeline is patchy, but Close travelled with MRA in the 60s as a member of their musical groups, and spent time back in Connecticut at an elite boarding school. I had a wonderful time at Rosemary Hall, a girls school, she says. I was in a renegade singing group called the Fingernails: A Group With Polish. But she remained, as she calls it clueless. A lot of my friends knew boys youd have these horrendous dances with boys schools and they would get the guys they wanted and I would just stay with the person I was with.

She was briefly married before going to university. It is a complicated story for me. I was married before college, and kind of in an arranged marriage when you look back on it, and my marriage broke up when I went to college, as it should have. I was 22. But my liberal arts school had a wonderful theatre that was my training, my acting school.
Was that where she finally learned about sex, popular culture, the ways of the world? Not really, she says. I still am learning.
Close has two sisters, Tina the eldest, and Jessie her younger sister; and two brothers, Alexander, and Tambu Misoki, who was adopted by Closes parents while living in Africa. At the age of 50, Jessie spent time in a psychiatric hospital and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a weight that had been hanging over the family, undiscussed, for years. Talking about mental illness just wasnt done, Close says. You dont have a vocabulary for it and youre also very aware of appearances. You dont want to appear a crazy family.
In 2010 Close founded Bring Change to Mind, a charity that aims to end the stigma around mental illness by talking openly about it and its effect on families. It was my nephew who was first diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. This is basically schizophrenia with an ingredient of bipolar. And when that happened, it was like, What? My sister Jessie, his mother, didnt know what was wrong. He went to the hospital for two years and that saved his life. Then Jessie was, finally, correctly diagnosed herself.

Close felt a duty to her family to give them a high-profile person who is not afraid to talk about it publicly. It affects the whole family. We always knew my grandmother and mother had depression my sister does, I do to a certain extent. But I didnt know my great-uncle had schizophrenia. I knew my half-uncle died by suicide. There was a lot of alcoholism addiction, self-medication. Nobody ever talked about it. I knew my grandmother was depressed, but at first I thought she lived in a hotel, not a hospital, because she always said how good the food was.
Close says she and her siblings are of one mind politically, but admits she does have members of her family who voted for Trump. I tried to understand that. Theyre not crazy people who have been brainwashed by Fox News, but I try to understand the anger, because I think that has been building up ever since Watergate. It was watching that scandal unfold that made her realise Americans have always been naive, we just take for granted what we have, and we always thought of our leaders as good people. With Watergate, people became cynical about government.
Today, she says, Washington is a bunch of self-serving She searches for an expletive and after a second settles on men. She says, Its hard to believe that people are so out for themselves. It goes against what you would like to believe about your country. I feel eloquence is incredibly important for a leader, and we had that with Barack Obama, who made his initial impact because he gave that incredibly eloquent speech, but he lost his eloquence in his presidency. We always need someone to say, I hear you, someone who can put their words into unity and hope and we dont have that. I think the last person may have been Robert Kennedy.
And now you have Trump tweeting nonsense.
Its devastating. Social networks are now like our nervous system, and if you keep pumping that kind of crap into the nervous system, it is going to have an effect on a population.

Close doesnt talk politics with her friends because she doesnt really have many friends. I have always forced myself into situations I am not comfortable in. I am an introvert, and I was painfully shy as a child. I think I still have a big dollop of that in my persona. I read a book called Quiet: The Power Of Introverts In A World That Cant Stop Talking and it was a real comfort to me I realised I was that person I had always been. And it was at that point I told myself to stop pushing myself into situations that I dont enjoy. I dread cocktail parties.
She tells me shes pretty reclusive and can count her closest friends on two fingers. I ask if shes still good friends with Meryl Streep.
I have never been close friends with Meryl. We have huge respect for each other, but I have only done one thing with her, The House Of The Spirits.
I apologise for assuming they were pals, being of a similar age and stature in Hollywood, and admit this negates my next question: Who would win in an arm wrestle, you or Meryl?
Close laughs. Oh, I would, because I am very strong.
***
The tightest bond Close has is with her only daughter Annie, 29. Annies father is the film producer John Starke whom Close dated for four years from 1987, but never married. Annie was never a door-slamming, difficult teenager. Close tells me: When my Annie was three, she looked at me, and said, I want you. I knew what she meant. I, at the time, was a single working parent, sometimes even when I was home, working or producing something, I was there and not there.
Tumblr media

She doesnt think its any easier for working mothers today and acknowledges, I had it easy because I could afford to have help think of the women who cant afford it and have to put their child in some shaky childcare centre. No, I think it is incredibly hard for women. Any person, in any profession, feels that tug [of guilt]. We discuss the intimacy of the single-parent, only-child bond. Once, I went to vacuum Annies car seat as we were moving house, and a lot of life had happened there, so I was crying. She said, Mummy, are you OK? I said, Yeah, Im OK. And she said, Here I am.
She was married to businessman James Marlas from 1984 to 1987 and then, following other relationships, including that with Starke, she married again, in 2006, to venture capitalist David Evans Shaw, divorcing him nine years later.
Would she marry again?
I dont know.
Does she think marriage is important?
I think it is a positive evolutionary component that we are better with a partner. I think to have a partner that you can go through life with, creating a history with, that you can find a comfort with, have children with there is nothing better. This is an opinion I have come to very late in life, at an ironic moment, where I dont have any of that. I dont know if I will again. But I do think its a basic human need to be connected.
Despite this, shes happy on her own right now. This is a good time in life. I do think, what would it be like to have a partner again? But it would have to be very different from what I had before. Then I have that great dream and wake up happy.

Anthony Bourdains #MeToo Advice for Alec Baldwin: Just Shut Up
Just shut up. Thats the advice chef-turned-TV host Anthony Bourdain would like to give to Alec Baldwin, who cant seem to stop weighing in on the #MeToo movement.
The first of Baldwins many boneheaded comments on the subject came during an interview late last year with PBS Newshour wherein the 30 Rock star criticized Rose McGowan for settling with her accused rapist, Harvey Weinstein. Asia Argento, an actress and filmmaker whos also bravely come forward to accuse the powerful movie mogul of sexual assault, took issue with Baldwins callous statement, calling him out on Twitter. The quick-tempered Baldwin responded by laying into an alleged rape victimIf you paint every man w the same brush, youre gonna run out of paint or men @AsiaArgentobefore blocking her.
So Bourdain, who is Argentos partner, fired back with an online jab of his own:
The 61-year-old Bourdain speaks tenderly about Argento, whom he met while filming his CNN show Parts Unknown, explaining how being around a woman of her considerable courage and conviction has caused the former bad-boy chef to reexamine his life. Hes since emerged as a shining example of male allyship.
When someone you care about and respect, you see them struggle to go on the recordthe incredible difficulty of going public about something, and the very real peril at the timeit changes you, Bourdain tells me. When Asia spoke to Ronan [Farrow], I think she might have been the first to go on record knowing with absolute certainty that she would most likely be sued, destroyed, crushed by this gigantic machine that had for decades been crushing far more powerful people than her who dared speak up. But she did it anyway. So to see that, and to see the blowback in Italy where shes received no support, has been eye-opening.
Argento recently addressed the outrageous backlash shes received in Italy since coming forward at the Women in the World Conference in New York. There are lots of predators, but the [victims] see me being called a whore, traitor or prostitute for speaking out so they keep quiet, she told moderator Ronan Farrow, who was recently awarded a Pulitzer for bringing Argentos and other womens allegations against Weinstein to light in The New Yorker.
As importantly, Bourdain continues, the other women that started talking to Asiasometimes in my presenceI started hearing a lot of things and seeing a lot of things that I had been blind to before, and had not heard before. I would love to tell you that I had all along been enlightened, but I was not. It was personal, it was emotional, and it was life-changing. I can only say that Im honored and grateful to learn and be inspired by these women.
In late November, shortly after the sexual-assault allegations against Weinstein came to light, Bourdain cooked a meal for three of Weinsteins accusersArgento, McGowan, and Annabella Sciorramemorializing the occasion on social media:
But Bourdain says hes been very reluctant to discuss the #MeToo movement because, unlike Baldwin, he does not wish to take attention away from the numerous women whove risked their careers in pursuit of justice.
Its something Im very aware of when I hear myself talking about itit makes me very uneasy, he says. These are not my stories, so I feel that every time Im talking about it Im taking up space that should be rightfully taken by a woman. Its a fine line for me. I dont particularly enjoy talking about it. But if you ask me, Ill tell ya.
In addition to Hollywood, the #MeToo movement has had a considerable impact on the male-dominated restaurant industry, where several chefs and restaurants have been embroiled in scandalnone more famous than chef/TV personality/restaurateur Mario Batali, whose apology for sexually-harassing women included a recipe for cinnamon rolls (really).
Ive been out of the industry for a really long time, says Bourdain, but Ill say this: it is not a bad thing that a lot of male chefs are frightened; that a lot of restaurant groups now have to, for reasons of self-interest, take a very hard look at how theyre doing business, how theyre reacting, and their ability to react to complaints of workplace harassment or worse.
I would hope that Mario [Batali] is a cautionary tale, he adds. To see an empire that big come crashing downa figure that respected and that accomplished, to have that status evaporate overnightI would hope that that sends a clear message that no matter who you are and how beloved you think you are, some shit just aint acceptable and youre not going to get away with it.
Bourdains Parts Unknown returns for its 11th season April 29 on CNN. Stay tuned for a longer feature on the showand its outstanding premiere episodeon Monday.
