I think people tend to forget that the reason Remus wasn't chosen to be the secret keeper for the Potters because Sirius didn't trust him.

At that point Peter wasn't chosen because he was the least conspicuous, but because he was the least suspicious.

All the order knew at that point was that there was a mole in their midst and Remus and Dumbledore suspected it was Sirius because he was a Black and Sirius thought it was Remus because he was a werewolf.

For both of them the rest of their kind was on Voldemort's side and the war had put them on edge.

That incident was meant to showcase the lack of trust in the Marauders during the war. It's meant to be a tragedy that in resorting to the prejudice and thus placing their trust in someone who was actually untrustworthy. You can't tell me James or Sirius were closer to Peter when they made the decision of who is to be the secret keeper.

There’s nothing to spoil. So far I have no plans to ever ship Coppernob with anyone. 

And engine relationships do exist in the Bird universe – which is not a given in my fics, lol. But Nobby will never ‘get’ this sort of thing. It’s a character arc for him that he becomes less condemnatory and more understanding about others ‘aping human affections’ (this is similar to all his internalized good-engines-don’t bullshit about naming yourself, too). Some of his attitude is because that’s what he was taught, but I also think he’s slow to move beyond it because he’s naturally the vehicular equivalent of acearo. He loves others deeply; that’s the whole series! Just… not in these kind of ways. 

If this does ever change, it will probably be because when I get around to writing his fiercely explosive relationship with Mars – F.R. 44, ex-W.&.F.J.R. 3 (this was back in the 1860s-1880s) – I find that it just runs away with me and turns into “what’s gayer, being gay or whatever these two have going on.”

Might be a hot take but a major character’s death is really only as good as the weight and the treatment that the narrative gives it. Sure, any author has the ability to write death as they see fit. But whether the consumer (of any given form of media) is actually able to emotionally connect and resonate with the departure of someone who has occupied a good chunk of narrative space very heavily depends on how it’s treated within the story. If it’s a major character, the narrative needs enough built-in breathing space. As in, the consumer doesn’t have to fill in the blanks as to how the death impacted the plot or the remaining characters. Let the narrative do that for them, and that would actually allow the consumer to better react and relate to that major death (sadness, anger, joy, etc). Allow the rest of the characters (who were impacted by the deceased) to react to their parting. Let them engage with the death in a manner that helps justify the character’s inclusion in the narrative to begin with. Make it clear how the character’s life and (especially) their death relate to the larger themes of the story. Because most consumers aren’t stupid. We don’t want our hands held at every waking moment, but we also don’t want our investment in a story to be insulted just for the sake of a cheap shock. Give us time to breathe and grieve. And respect that we have put in a lot of emotional investment in a story and its characters, and we deserve to have that acknowledged.

i thought about a fic idea all of last week, obsessing over it night after night and then when I finally had a chance to draft and write it, got approximately three words out in the document

instead I've now spent the day writing another completely different fic that came to me this morning. almost 5k words at this point, completely drafted out in the form of dialogue, and some entire scenes actually written out too

because why on earth would creativity be in any way controllable, that's clearly not how it works

Its tragic that Regulus died but it's more tragic that he didn't have to. Kreacher could Apparate him from the cave. And if Regulus wanted to protect his family, his secret death achieves this how? He just disappears and Vold isn't looking for him or punishing deserter' family? Isn't worried that the boy whose house-elf he borrowed to test horcrux protection vanished? But the again, Vold wasn't shook when Kreacher showed up at Bella's in 5th book though elf supposedly died in that damn cave. XD

everything about regulus feels like an exercise in didn’t have to tbh

like yeah i know heroic teenager sacrificing himself blah blah but,,,,after reading a lot of fics that actually focus on worldbuilding/plot/side characters--im not entirely convinced that'sd what it was. like. if harry & co hadn't found the locket by sheer luck, then there's a v good chance things wouldnt have ended the way they had. reg ended up making things harder in his quest to vanquish the dark lord or wtv.

and like, im not even trying to bash here, but when i look at regulus the top character traits i see are arrogance, ambition, inflated sense of self worth, recklessness, and single mindedness (if thats valid). i mean,,,our boy could've easily asked sirius for help, he knew for a fact that his brother was on the other side, but he didnt. why? i cant see anything but ego there. he didnt even try. he was nowhere close to putting the cause above his own self.

but also,,,the fact that he actually went in the cave, presumably knowing he would die,,,that kinda indicates something much sadder for me. like, why else would he be so ok w the fact if he wasnt, say, unbearably suffocated and hopelessly over his head? if there wasnt latent suicidal ideation or, at the very least, a desire to get out, get away, not be here.

like, idk. i cant think of why he wouldnt ask kreacher to apparate him back/help him escape when he knew house elves could bypass the magic until he'd just fully accepted (perhaps even wished for) his death ykno?
