Monster Call of Duty Men with a dread ducky demon reader

Author’s Note: characters may be out of character, Dread Ducky is one of my favorite characters in dark deception and I’m also getting into call of duty so I made this, cod monster types are based off of the designs of @bluegiragi , I hope you enjoy it. I also might make a gold watcher and doom ducky one, hell I might make a murder monkey one. I apologize if I get some stuff wrong about call of duty. Let me know if you want more.

You were a Dread Ducky, a demon who was made of flesh and robotics, wearing your traffic cone hat and doing the dance of your people with pride, not afraid to bust some ass either if they say otherwise. Just like your mama who was a Doom Ducky demon, you wanted to join the military and wallop those asses in battle and have justice served. When you first got there, you already felt eyes on you by others soldiers. Some were curious stares and some were “what the hell is that” stares but you pushed them away because there was no way you were going to let them ruin your day. Price had read your files and he was both impressed in your skills and is interested in you, he was the first one to welcome you to the team when you got there. Price always gives a listening ear even if you can’t really speak and you mostly communicate through quacks and movement. Your silly duck dance manages to make him crack a smile. In battle, the dragon hybrid man is impressed by your strength and moves, especially when you open your mouth real wide only to reveal another head coming out with a swift movement to bite and drag your opponent back to your mouth like a cuckoo clock. In the background of the battle field fighting and watching you kick ass like “that’s my boy/girl/Ducky”.

Ghost was suspicious of you when he first met you, he observes you from a far, when he finally opens up to you more he will tell the most cheesy dad jokes. “Hey what do you call a bear that has no teeth?”. . . . . “A gummy bear” (sorry I had too, my bad 😂💀) “what did the duck say to the bar tender?”. . . . . “Put it on my bill.” (Ok fine I’ll stop)

He enjoys just sitting down with you, there’s a smile behind his mask when you do your ducky dance, he doesn’t know why but he manages to crack a smile and let out a snort when you do it. He also can’t help but to crack a smile behind his mask when you make quacks to say “hey ghost how are you doing?” And “what up Lt.” as for Soap, he loves you, Johnny loves you, from your traffic cone hat to your ducky dance and to your cute little waddles when you walk or run. He was always curious about your monster type and he finds you both cool and adorable. He hypes you up when you ducky dance, he will also make an attempt to try to do your ducky dance as well with a funky beat in the background. It always blows a circuit in his mind when you sit down because it looks like your legs completely disappeared without a trace. He also asks if he can ride you (Ayo? Not like that, he means like a piggy or more like ducky back ride) Gaz like soap, loves you, he also hypes up your sweet dance moves. he might attempt on trying to do your ducky dance. He runs around with you on free time. He in enjoys roof top talks with you and goofing off with you.

You and Alejandro get along, you two are dance buddies, you two joke around and laugh a lot. You love helping Rudy, Soap, and Gaz play pranks then act a fool when you are questioned by it.

In the end they love you, you are their chaotic ball of sunshine.

Chapter 9 : Sketch

Sketch is a non-damaging move that allows the user to copy the opponent's move permanently, replacing Sketch. 

You internally cursed Tang out in your head as you spotted an energetic MK painting along with Sandy. 

For a second, you were glad that MK appeared to be back to normal, but then you remembered the madness that was his Artist Clone. You remember that it only took 15 hours for Porty to go on his power trip, and you were pretty sure Artist was earlier than Porty, and that’s why you felt that off feeling as you watched MK take two paint brushes and begin painting even more.

“How long has he been at this?” You whisper-asked Sandy, who whispered back that he’s been painting for about Five hours now. You shuddered. Five hours already? Ten hours or less left to go…

Two hours.

The clone lasted for two hours.

“It needs to be better. It needs to be better.” The Artist Clone muttered to himself as he painted an intricate mural of MK dancing, surrounded by clones playing different instruments.

Despite its beauty, Artist didn’t seem pleased with it.

“I think it’s pretty good, MK.” Sandy said, and you felt fear strike into your very soul when Artist MK turned to the two of you with an insane look on his face.

“Pretty good? Pretty good!? That’s not good enough.” You and Sandy cowered and hugged each other as Artist MK yelled at you two. “You asked me to help paint your boat and that’s what I’m gonna do. I won’t stop until it’s perfect!” 

“I think it’s already perfect, MK.” You decided to stay, and he glared at you, making you even more nervous.

There was a small beat of silence, Artist MK’s eye twitched, then he attacked.

Sandy stood in front of you, hoping his natural strength could hold Artist MK back, but Artist MK’s funky mystic monkey powers easily kicked Sandy’s butt. Startled, you were powered up again, much like how you were back at the Weather Station, instead this time, the waves of the water became harsh, rocking the boat.

This didn’t intimidate the Artist Clone, and he ended up tying you and Sandy up before returning to his painting.

“Hey.” Sandy whispered to you, tied up suspended in the air. “Since when could you do that? The water thing?”

Ah, you forgot he was technically a water demon…

“The water thing? Just now, but apparently I’ve been unlocking these wacky abilities since Red Son took over the Weather Station. Remember when I punched that Bull Clone?” Your boss nodded. “Well, I also was covered in electricity, which totally short circuited the clone.”

Sandy nodded in understanding, and for the next few hours, you sat on the ground uncomfortable as Artist MK constantly painted over the murals he made over and over again, complaining about imperfections all the while.

“Yes, yes, the art is seeping into my pores!” Artist MK dragged a pink coated paintbrush across his face with an insane grin. “Just needs… One. More. Coat.” He turned to you and Sandy slowly, scaring the heck out of the two of you. 

“You missed a spot!”

“Where!?” Artist Clone then disappeared in a puff of dust and hair, and the real MK appeared. 

“Hey, MK. Mystic Monkey business?” Sandy asks knowingly, and MK nods. 

“How many of those clones did you make?” You ask curiously, maybe he’d give you an actual answer as to how many he actually made and not just the main three clones from this episode. 

Instead, he yelled out about Mei and rushed off, and you remembered that he’s better off saving her before she probably gets actually obliterated by that claw machine if he didn’t make it like last time. 

“So… now what?” Sandy wiggled a bit, making him swing side to side. 

“I think I can do something…” You replied. You wiggled around some too before one of your LEGO claw hands popped out of the ropes. You grabbed a knife from your pocket. 

“Since when did you have that!?” Sandy helps out in alarm, and you chuckle. 

“Since you hired me? You have quite a few of these just laying around in the store. I actually feel kind of comfortable walking around if I have an unreasonably sharp object to protect me.” You replied, easily cutting the ropes that Artist MK tied you in before freeing Sandy. 

“I don't think that’s a good thing.” Sandy said as you freed him, easily landing on his feet. 

You shrug. “Eh, what else do I have?”

He grabbed the knife from you with an unimpressed look on his face. “Those super strong powers you just admitted to having?”

You stared blankly for a second before pointing finger guns at him. “Touché.”

First I want to shout to the people of Genius.com, because I'm often one of those people to miss certain themes in music, unless I've listened to it one bajillion times (Also I don't know much about ants lol) So now I can use the context, to form a more interesting opinion than "I had fun listening to a song :)"

Anyway. First (this is a LD song after all), the beat is very funky. It's interesting how the very first chorus almost gives like 'church-song-vibes' if you know what I mean, before the more vibey part kicks in. The notes on "you can't remember knowing" scratch a specific part in my brain. Also, the wind-chimes are just a really nice touch :]

Second, lyrics I'm always in awe of people who can write about such "menial" topics (like ant mills) in such fascinating ways. The way the entire "You can't remember where you're going" part is about the "simple" act of losing the pheromone track; especially considering the mirrored version later in the song. The way you seem to forget literally everything about your life, to the point you believe to be born in the spiral. The way you're so tied to the pheromones, that without them, you simply give yourself up to death, without complaint. Happily, even.

Basically the entire last chorus (with the hurricane metaphors), reads like such obvious coping, but its also obvious that the ants truly believe it. That they feel joy in their self-created doom, that they do not care about anything that outsiders have to say or think about them "You've got to keep it flowing". There is no other choice.

And, of course, the (false? who's to say) individuality within the group that is constantly referenced "You are one ant" "Don't fret, you're leading the race" "Take the wheel, this could be your chance" "You're free now forever to dance" The ants take great pride in the group, but they also can't fully realize just how deeply they are affected by it, and how few of their decisions are truly theirs

And the entire way the narrative is framed is especially interesting, when we look at Neil's switch from "you" to "we". Of course he would sing about ant society in such a beautiful, but glorified way! He is also an ant! You are both trapped in the mill, and this false believe system!!!

i once again feel like im just kind of ripping you off, but callum and gingi are an interesting duo that i also think a lot about!!!! i mean just on a base contextual level they’re meant to be compared and seen as equals—gingi is the only one who tries to hear callums own words instead of interpreting them from his past actions, and i think that means something!!! i have something planned for my mingus character study to do with those two and i’m excited to realize the vision a little bit more, but i won’t spoil it for the layman reading this >:-) you’ll all just need to wait and see what sad ass shit i have planned…

NOW THIS IS WHERE I’M SCRATCHING MY DAMN HEAD. BECAUSE WHAT ARE MY CALLUM HCS… i think, if you’ll let me just kinda spitball off of nothing, callum is really into jazz. like it’s something he got into when it was in its hayday and he continues to be an enjoyer of it. used to dance with milt and marla around the office with some upbeat jazz playing. nowadays jazz is the only thing you’ll hear in his room, other than the sounds of him tuning his busted radio (they have a separate, functioning radio just out of sight playing jazz). it’s something mingus requested in the hopes it’d make him remember Something, but post ch3 it just becomes something nice to hear when she’s visiting. i think at times you can see him nod his head along to the beat, in a slow and stilted way. maybe even twitches his finger to the melody. it’s something that just feels natural to him—the ebb and flow of jazz is similar to how he thinks. sporadic and jumping at every opportunity. and i think a small part of him remembers that vigor. remembers his own jazz

General Opinion over said character:

i mean what can be said about callum crown. dude fucking IS the narrative of dialtown. he’s baked into every part and for good reason!!!!!! the first time i watched the turnip lore i was like. genuinely flabbergasted because DAMN…REALLY? HIS BRAIN GOT YASSED FOR REAL?? but now i just think about him and wail in agony. he’s a really interesting character both in the past and present!!!! i’m glad dogman is so willing to share tidbits about him bc it fleshes him out all the more

Supernatural- New Jeans Single Review

Warning: This is gonna give you a little glimpse of how old I am... please bear with me!

Hey Bunnies! Let’s dive into New Jeans' latest jam, "Supernatural." This track is like a time machine straight to the 90's – it’s all that and a bag of chips! Here’s the scoop on what makes it tick and what doesn’t quite hit the mark.

Concept: 10/10The 90's vibe is strong with this one! The fashion, the colors, the funky graphics – it’s giving major nostalgia. Remember those rad music videos from MTV’s golden era? This is like a love letter to that time. They’ve nailed the retro look, but some might say it leans a bit too hard into the cliché territory. It’s a fine line between homage and overkill, and “Supernatural” occasionally stumbles into the latter.

Lyrics: 9.2/10 The lyrics are catchy and fun, perfect for singing along. They’ve got that carefree, youthful energy that New Jeans does so well. However, some of the lines feel a bit repetitive, and there’s not a lot of depth. But hey, sometimes you just want something light and breezy, right?

Beat: 9.9 Oh man, the beat is killer. It’s got this infectious groove that makes you want to get up and dance. The production is crisp, with a perfect blend of modern and retro sounds. this is just the cutest little city pop song! it's simple and catchy and it was a real change to hear such soft voices from billlie! softer title tracks always stand out to me because they are often so so pretty and delicate and byob is so so pretty and delicate! and the lyrics... i have claimed this as an aromantic anthem, it's ours. not relating to your friends having crushes .... billlie i see u

9. Break the Brake - Xdinary Heroes

this song is just straight vibes... the loudest rock we've gotten from xdinary and I appreciate it SO much. the verses r so clean and the falsetto.. its harmonically so interesting so the noise of the chorus feels properly cathartic and doesn't feel like a loss which can sometimes happen in scream-esc choruses. It's arranged SO well to balance all these things and be stimulating while also being so emotive. AND JUNHAN WITH THOSE CRUNCHY NOTES IN HIS SOLO. the dissonance.. its so brain-sratchy

8. In Bloom - Zerobaseone

zebi brainrot is so real friends.. be careful. this song is so beautiful! i think its a perfect example of the song marrying the concept and mv and members tones so well. from literally the first minute of zb1 i was so excited about their concept of mixing natural imagery like flowers with glitchy technology imagery and i hoped the music would match... AND IT DID! its so lyrical while being crunchy and energetic. SUCH a slayful debut

7. #menow - Fromis_9

this song is sooooo pretty. epitome of a soft bop. it's a classic fromis sound but with this sense of maturity and humility that makes it so engaging and emotional. it demands to be taken seriously but still is so fun! the vocal production is next level.. the effect on their voices in the chorus so they're used like instruments... one of favourite techniques ever. i LOVE when the vocals truly feel like part of the arrangement and not just sitting on top and this song truly does that

6. Spicy - Aespa

the absolute cunt aespa serve in this song... who let them. anyone who knows me knows i'm obsessed with everything moonshine has ever made.. and so when i heard they were doing an aespa title... i went crazy. and i am so right for it. THE BASS IS INSANE?? it puts all other synth basses to shame with how in your face it is. and the crispy snare? idk how to describe this song other than cunty because she genuinely does not care about being clean or palatable... like she is In Your Face with sound. and aespa literally ate that up... they are so fun and cheeky and confident! i'm sorry this is the kind of song that only a group of baddies could handle and aespa stepped up

5. Sugar Rush Ride - TXT

txt doing disco... like you already have me at that. it's sooooo groovy and although the anti-chorus was surprising.. i'm not mad at it! I'm so happy they went into it full force with the whisper vocals and the choreo switching mood, it rly helped the genre change make sense. and the DISCOOO at the end.. bop central. the lyrics and choreo and vibes overall r just so beautiful.. what can i say i love songs about gay sex i mean forbidden love...

4. Groovy - Cravity

the funky bop of all funky bops... literally funk pop goodness! there is so much movement in this track theres so many different rhythms happening and the blend together sooo well. the dance break is perfect.. literally everything you want from a dance break with the continuation of the same sounds but a new tone to it and new rhythmic focuses. and the choreo for it literally hits ever beat you want it to and stretches out the time between them perfectlyyyy. but ultimately it is on here because is it a feel-good happy fun bop.. and she excels at it! vity makes me so happy and they are so good at making songs that make you happy

3. Galileo - Kep1er

cutest song of the year! it is so groovy and fun and danceable. it is sooo feel-good it literally makes me smile every time. thank you hiyyih for putting aegyo in a song<3 where is her nobel peace prize. this is the kind of song where you truly can't hear the music theory going on because it just does exactly what you want it to do! any tension chords are resolved perfectly where you want them to. it's the perfect example of chords from minor keys borrowed to make a song that sounds so major and happy. there is absolutely nothing i would change about this song it is sooo perfect. absolutely filled to the brim with joy

2. ROAR - The Boyz

...like literally hello? this song came out of nowhere for me i did NOT expect to be as impressed as i was like my life changed after this song. firstly the whistle.. hot and sexy and catchy. carrying it through as a motif, chopping it up, creating variations, translating it to a singable vocal line... all of that is SO impressive to be able to pull off. crunchy track underneath.. beautiful. but what is most impressive to me about this song is the topline. the vocals are literally insane.. chanhee and hyunjae have my favourite tbz voices and u are crazy if u don't agree that they r the main characters of this song. some of those chorus lines are So high and they can sing them in a way that sounds so effortless. and the backing vocals... the Incredibly high harmony in the choruses makes me want to scream (it's jacob i think.. jail). and there is just voices Everywhere.. everywhere theres little 'ahs' hidden around and it not only fits the songs sexy concept in such a natural way but it just fills up every bit of space in the song. and the lyrics... once again i love a song about ..*checks notes* forbidden love.. that is damned by heaven... definitely not about gay sex tho .. definitely not..

1. Chill Kill - Red Velvet

second moonshine on the list .. no one is suprised. i think this song has complimented red velvet's two sides of creepy and feel-good the most successfully. the tone shift from the verses to the chorus is so obvious... but seamless. and what does it is the harmony! the chords are perfect... it seems redundant to talk about rv vocals but they rly just make the song. and the outro... blending both vocal parts of the chorus together.. it sounds epic. it adds to both the happy and creepy by sounding like a group of friends together.. but also cult-y with all that creepiness still lingering. singing 'forget about your sorrow' with the happiest voices like the verses weren't filled with creepy minor sounds... literally gaslighting queens. this song is terrifying and also the most joyful (hi sooyoung 😘) experience to listen to.... only the dream team of moonshine cazziopeia and red velvet can manage that. and it's no surprise this dream team gets my no.1 spot!

Chan: Daddy Issues- The Neighborhood

You saw this coming, I know you did. This song is absolutely delicious, its delectable, and its so correct for Bang Chan Stans. He even called himself our Daddy at one point. Additionally, this song is so weirdly sweet? Its about a genuinely loving person, who wants to be there for the other person. There’s an almost gentle vibe to it, if you get over how blatantly sexy it is, which checks out for Bang Chan, tbh. I really can’t explain what about the vibe just screams Chan, but I know you can feel it. 

Lee Know: Teeth- 5 Seconds of Summer

Lets be real, Lee Know is one of the sassiest mfers on the planet, and we love him for that. This song is definitely about a toxic ass relationship, but its still so sexy. The line “fight so dirty, but you love so sweet” just sounds so much like Minho that its crazy. This song really sounds like it was made for Minho, and there’s been a couple of fantastic edits to this song. 

Changbin: Levitate- Hollywood Undead

THIS SONG!! So it’s my favorite HU song, and its so sexy and cocky. Lets be real, so is Changbin. More than that, the lyrics are shockingly deep. Changbin is such a smart guy under all those rippling muscles, and I feel like that isn’t brought up enough. I can’t really imagine Changbin singing this song, but I could see it playing in the background around him all the time. Now Changbin fans are no doubt some of the horniest Stray Kids fans so a super horny HU song just seems correct. 

Hyunjin: Bubblegum Bitch- Marina and the Diamonds

So this song is fun, its sexy, and its all about confidence. On the outset, it just seems to be about having fun and being a flirt, but its actually about accepting and loving every aspect of yourself. Its that thing that calls me to Hyunjin. He’s confident, chic, and very art pop vibes. I don’t know if I want to see him dance to this song, or I want to scream the lyrics with him while we drunkenly dance around in our pjs. 

Han: Ain’t My Fault- Zara Larson

I’m about to be super biased, so bear with me. Objectively, this song doesn’t really seem like Jisung, a lot of the time he’s actually a awkward and weird dude. However! There are times when he’s a very sexy, confident dude. This feels like the kind of song he would enjoy. Just don’t imagine meeting him in a club and dancing to this song. And definitely don’t imagine him wearing a leather jacket. 

Felix: Lights Down Low- Max

So listen, I love this song! Its fun and funky and makes me wanna dance. Its a surprisingly sweet love song wrapped in a fire melody. The vocals are beautiful and the whole song feels like when Felix’s eyes get all sparkly. Its about finding a person that feels like divinity, and getting the chance to love them. Felix is our gentle angel and this song should play every time he walks in the room. 

Seungmin: Love Me Like You Do- Elli Goulding

I know you expected a Day6 song for our young gentleman, however a simple song like this suits him so much more. The vocals alone strike me as something he’d rock, but additionally the sweet message and gorgeous melody suit him as well. Moreso, the wordplay really works with our sassy puppy Seungmin. I can see him dancing with his S/O and singing this song all soft and sweet. (i cry)

I.N.: Maknae on Top- Stray Kids

Hear me out: I literally can’t think of any song that suits him more. The beat is catchy, its a little cocky, and it cements him as THE Maknae on Top. Jeonginnie, like this song, is a bit weird, but overall, the coolest. This song was literally made for him, so it would make sense that it would be the perfect song for him. It should be playing every time he walks into a room, and he should have to do the little dance.

Album Review of the Week: Nobody's Angel (2000) ☆☆☆☆☆

In 1999, four girls made friends with each other as they continued to run into each other at auditions and decided to band together! This, I have learned from my current magazine journey. I have so enjoyed watching small articles about them pop up from time to time and I cannot wait to get into the year 2000 and see them even more!

In preparation for a review, I usually listen to the album once while doing the write-up. However, I was so looking forward to this one that I listened to it twice yesterday and now again today! Once I get a taste, I cannot stop with this album!

Nobody's Angel is the quintessential y2k bubblegum pop group. If you love the early 2000s you must listen to this album at least once! It is everything that y2k bubblegum should be. Nothing but fun, sparkle and energy. Not to mention the inflatable sofa on the front and back covers! Love the sandals as well.

Buckle up, baby, 'cuz here we go! We start with If You Wanna Dance, their lead and I believe most popular single. It is packed with so much energy that you cannot help to move and bop along. The chorus moves at lightning speed while the verses bring in a more mellow melody leaning almost into an R&B style - just in the vocals of course. The instrumentation remains extremely poppy in the best way.

I Can't Help Myself slows down the tempo but we still have the hard hitting beats behind the gentle guitar and vocals. This song shows off their gorgeous harmonizing.

Boom Boom is a funky track with a chorus with extreme sing-along-ability. I've been singing it the last 2 days! The melody and speed of the lyrics is so much fun to recreate and makes it quite the earworm.

Next Stop Heaven really brings in the groove with an energetic bassline, more harmonizing and another fantastic chorus! Their energy is just infectious.

Keep Me Away is another ballad and as much as I usually dislike ballads, those on this album got me bopping as much as the other tracks! This is one to sing while looking out the window on a rainy day. It is high drama with the heavy strings and pleading vocals.

With Right There Waiting, the instrumentation is a tad trite, but the melody is still really great with that energetic chorus. This is the type of song that would play in a rom-com when the couple are in their honeymoon stage. I can see the woman walk-dancing through the streets to this song!

Ooh La La has the classic answering machine interlude that you will find in many early 2000s pop albums (even Britney's Oops!...I Did It Again!) I know I'm saying the word 'energy' way too much, but every song has it! This song also has a really cool bridge that gives it an edge that some of the other songs don't have. There is also a little chatter part that I love where one of them just shouts 'do the washing machine! and an acappella outro to spice things up a bit.

Things get a bit sexier with Wishing On You. We have sultry vocals and darker instrumentation to illustrate this small pivot.

Absolutely Maybe put me in an absolute tailspin as an 8 year old. The lyrics are totally contradictory! How can you say absolutely maybe, I am sure I really think so although I deserve a week? Jokes aside, the melody is less "energetic" than the preceding tracks but not by much! Rest assured, we have yet another great song on our hands - especially with such clever lyrics.

Sugar Daddy has a funky 70s vibe that will get your head bobbing! Now, get your mind out of the gutter. He is sweet like candy!!!

Nobody is the best midtempo on the album. The solo vocals are pretty weird sounding but the harmonies are fantastic with an infectious melody. This one is sexy without trying too hard like Wishing On You is.

Despite being 12 tracks in, the album is still exciting with Cherry Crush. We're back to the quick as lightning vocal deliveries. This song is the most R&B-like of the bunch, very pop still but has elements of R&B of the time.

This masterpiece of an album closes with a cover of the disco hit, We Are Family, which begins with an interlude of someone flipping through radio stations - very fun and 2000s. The verses are different than the original, spicing it up with a rap-like delivery to bring the song into the modern times. Injecting new energy, some might say!

Obviously, I absolutely love this album and it is one of the essentials of the early 2000s.

All of them!

Martha- born on the 25th of duober, 1072183 AD. she's in the football club! The music she likes is upbeat pop, and calming jazz and r&b. Artists like Emily king, hot freaks, melody gardot, stuff like that. Things that make her feel happy, nostalgic, and calm. She likes retro futurism, lots of short plastic dresses with weird shapes, arm cuff things, weird hairstyles, and little boots! That's only if she can be bothered though, most of the time she's in shorts or short skirts, camisoles, and her mother's jacket. If she's going somewhere really fancy she may wear something metallic Ritz, or this other thing I haven't named yet, or have but didn't write it down. In case of winter, she has a lot of sweaters. Doesn't stop wearing short though. Just longer socks.

Tammy- born December fifth, she's in band and the cheer squad, she likes HEAVY metal, all that electric stuff, rock, anything with a good drum beat or baseline. Stuff like baby metal, in flames, etc. As for her style, what do you get when you combine an ero-goth and a leather jacket wearer? Tammy! She does a lot of DIY, and wears shorts, band tees, weird fucked up shirt she cut a lot of holes in, training bras, flip flops, and a studded up leather jacket she's had since she was 11. She doesn't really wear trousers. Her and Martha bond over only wears shortsness. (She also has a rabbit hoodie, she goes to the roller rink in it so she and Martha can be 'the tortoise and the hare')

Jenny- born the seventh of duodecimber, she's in the technology club! She likes... I don't actually know how to explain it but gorillaz, geisha girls, TV girl, that kinda funky, down-beat stuff you'd expect to hear in a video game. For the apparel she has one pair of shoes and she doesn't wear others, she likes putting yarn in her hair, tight sweaters, tennis skirt, stretchy jeans and polos, if she has to get fancy, she and Thomas have matching red dresses. She also has a lot of shirts that are variations of 'women want me, fish fear me'

Thomas- 3rd of October, he's in the football and gardening clubs, eventually the football team. As for music I don't think I fully fleshed him out... but dance music like neneh cherry and gothy/electronica like mareux, he also canonically listens to the artist 'vallicent' who is, of course, made up. His favourite song is red sands. In terms of clothes, most of the time he'll wear like... very small crop tops. This specific juniper green shirt that like crosses over like... idk it would have to be visual. Small skirts, baggy trousers, cool jackets, (the reason he joined the football team) he also owns a lot of band shirts, his favourite is his Phobos and Deimos shirt bcs it's got a picture of mars and it's two moons, I think nearly everyone owns one of those. He also quite likes astral outback. If he's getting fancy he'll just wear the red dress he has that matches with Jenny.

James/genji- born the 11th of undeviginber. Weird month. He's in the football club, and he's not in the band but he does like weird instruments like theramins and stuff. Subsequently, he likes weird music that has theramins and stuff. Stuff like TV girl as well, and talking heads, and... Earthbound soundtrack? He also like classical music. As for what classical means to someone a million years in the future, idk. For clothes, he wears a lot of layers, baggy shirt, flannel, leather jacket, and then. Shorts. He wears cargo shorts. Jorts. 😔. He also had a wack ass mullet but Tammy fixed it.

Goth stuff, synth wave, also she does enjoy some softer stuff, easier on the ears. For her clothes, what are you supposed to do when you have white hair and blue skin? Be a goth! There's no other option. It is, however, quite hard to find clothes that accomadate six arms, so unless she's going somewhere she'll just wear some baggy trousers and a bra. If it gets cold, she has a poncho. But when she is going somewhere she wears very little in the way of shirts, or at least she does now, and she has a nice tight maxi skirt. She also has 'slug boots' which are boots with two spikes, that she stuck little balls on so they look like antennae. She also wears a lot of veils, sporty the... well I haven't decided what it's called but it's likely gonna be under 'frill'. She owns a lot of off shoulder stuff cuz. Yknow. Arms.

Aled- born 17th tredecimber, he's in the football and poetry club. I don't think. I gave him any sense of music. Idk he listens to something °\_( :\ )_/° bound to. In terms of clothes he has a wool lined denim jacket that he constantly wears. And camp trousers. And like, vests. He wears vests. He also wears a little headband :)

Georgie- born vigiduober 10th, she's in the tennis club, the poetry club, and she's in band, plays the tuba! As for music she likes astruca pop, classical, and the upbeat kind of goth like strawberry switchblade. She wears mostly ripped baggy jeans and tiny shirts, I don't think I've drawn her enough times to get a full gauge on her style. There's a lot of black and cobwebs though.

Dane- born the 1st of quinquber, he's. Still not really fleshed out. Tennis club, gardening club, whatever. Music I... didn't flesh out. However I now know his last name is newton! Huzzah! I've drawn him like once, and he wears fancy nail polish and sweaters. That's. That's all I've got.

I love Big Time Rush so much it's hard for me to give them a low ranking.

That being said the beginning of this song reminds me of the beginning of that one song about the body shop (I think it's called unholy or something like that)

The chorus is what grabbed my attention.

You spin my head right round baby right round

It's definitely not my favorite, but they really know how to get vibes going

The part where you hear them kinda echoing 'i can't forget you' is very haunting in the best kind of way

Lesson 3: This is not a test...

CLASS IS IN SESSION

Rick Rubin is one of the most influential producers in the music biz. He turned Linkin Park from what could have been a two-album flash in the pan into one of the deepest acts in alternative music (no kidding, A Thousand Suns remains one of this berk's top 20 albums of all time). He introduced the world to more iconic acts than I can count. And before all that… he was in a shitty punk group that was more known for fake fights and fake arrests than anything else. (His dad was a policeman and would pretend to arrest Rick when he got into planned altercations with planted hecklers - an attempt at getting traction that failed.)

But at the same time, Rick was keeping his thumb on the pulse of the New York music scene, and when he found out about a few rapidly growing groups that were turning out incredibly danceable music with an antiestablishment ethos, his first thought on listening to them was that it was Black Punk Rock.

The music in question was, of course, hip hop.

Let's delve in.

Hip hop was influenced by numerous sources - talking blues, disco, R&B - and tracking all those down would be great, but we're going to truncate slightly today, because A) I'm saving a lot of that for a later lesson, and B) because the most pertinent one is actually disco, believe it or not. See, like punk rock, there was a single spark that ignited the movement, and while it was slower to burn, it had the perfect kindling. The place was in the slums of the south Bronx, in a rec room at 1520 Sedgewick Avenue. The person was DJ Kool Herc, who spun records for dance parties there.

The above documentary gives us a good glimpse at how Herc did his thing. Today we just know it as basic mixing, but back in the day, this kind of thing was revolutionary. Add in an emcee - Coke la Rock - who would handle the microphone while Herc was mixing, and you had the first emcee-deejay combo.

Over time, more groups came together. Grandmaster Flash picked up Herc's skills, and then hammered them down, bringing them to new heights of awesomeness. He couldn't even try to get on the mic while he was mixing, too focused on the beats he was crafting, so he got an enterprising B-boy they called Cowboy to do the honors. Over time he amassed a group of five emcees to work with him - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The Treacherous Three, the Funky Four (Plus One More) - you can see a sort of theme in these early groups. Rap battles were a thing, inheriting a little bit of gang battle ethos from their founders - early rap adopters the Zulu Nation were ex-gang members who were trying to veer into a more constructive direction, and they did so well.

But for most, the genre was locked away. Sure, rapping was easy enough to do, but to be a real hip hop artist you needed a deejay, and that equipment was expensive. As I said, the spark was there, but it needed kindling.

And just as punk had its watershed moment in 1977 in London, so hip hop did in 1977 in New York. On July 13th, NYC had a city-wide blackout that lasted just over a full 24 hours. A mob mentality decended over the city, with widespread looting… and in the aftermath of these riots, a lot of expensive sound equipment made its way into the hands of enterprising would-be deejays, either through their own actions or through pawnshops who didn't ask questions about where the equipment came from in the weeks after the blackout.

Now, there is much - MUCH - to say about this scene… but as I'm delving in, I'm realizing that someone else has already done this lesson, and arguably done it better than I could ever dream of doing it. Cartoonist Ed Piskor has done a series, Hip Hop Family Tree, that chronicles the early rise of the scene beautifully. And in the spirit of the early rap bootlegs that we're going to be discussing… you didn't get it from me, but hereyago:

That's twelve issues of greatness right there.

Now, with THAT link dropped, let's talk seminal moments for the origins of hip hop.

The first track on wax that was nothing but a deejay showing off their mixing prowess? "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel". This one was even more notable because Sugar Hill Records didn't like paying royalties to artists that they sampled, and tended to use original compositions rather than having Flash or other deejays mix in the background (which, yes, was kind of insulting to the art of the deejay…). Also, please note, there are NO editing tricks here. This was just Flash at his best, and he laid the whole track down in only four or five takes.

The first rap "superstar", arguably, was Kurtis Blow. At the very least, the man was both responsible for the first gold record in the hip hop genre and the man who brought it to Soul Train, with "The Breaks".

And now, we're going to zig-zag-zig back to an earlier point.

The early hip hop scene was full of bootlegs. Some were recordings of live events - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five had a full live track that had never been released recorded, and it's still more popular, as the studio version lacks the passion of the live recording. (Bozo Meko's version of 'Flash it to the Beat', fyi.) Unscrupulous producers would record artists in the studio under the guise of 'letting them play around' and release their work under different names - and again, that happened to the Furious Five, with "We Rap More Mellow" being released as the work of The Younger Generation. And then there were bootleg compilations released for the deejays - packages of "essential" disco songs pressed as unofficial collections, distributed behind the counter of record stores.

Our TRACK OF THE WEEK is the first of those. A recording of a live event - something that we now recognize as the first rap battle, Busy Bee Starsky vs. Kool Moe Dee. A battle that Starsky phoned in because he assumed he'd have no real competition, and Moe came loaded for bear for. This one's a slaughter, kiddos.

And we're gonna have a lot to say about hip hop in the future... but for now, that gets you to the starting line.
