Can I ask how you went about starting your ace/aro group? How did you find people? I would love to do something like that in my area but have no idea how to start. I looked at making a group on Meetup but that's pretty expensive.
Yeah! I started with my friend who's also ace, so it helped that there were two of us. The main things we had to work out were where to meet and how to advertise. She booked a room at her non-religious "church" for Tuesday nights, and we made a flyer that we hung up around town in coffee shops and such. Our main advertising, however, was tabling at the local Pride. Our first year we had, like, a stack of our fliers and didn't even get our own booth - we shared a booth with the Bi+ Visibility group.
Our first meeting was the week after Pride, I think, and we had maybe 7 people show up? That whole first meeting we wrote up a group agreement of "rules" for the group and discussed logistics of how to communicate. Everyone there had Discord so I took down people's usernames and started a Discord server. For the next month, I posted a list of topics in the Discord and had people vote for which we should discuss. Things like "dating as an ace/aro person or opting not to date in a world obsessed with dating", "figuring out your identity", "coming out", etc. That meeting we just had a discussion about that - everyone saying what they wanted when they wanted. Basically we'd rinse and repeat that once a month and people kept coming. We had a holiday party in December and a Palentine's party near Valentine's Day. The group kept growing slowly but steadily, primarily through word of mouth.
The next year for Pride we got our own booth, which was our biggest expense (around $200), but we got a lot more people interested too. That year we made buttons in the ace and aro colors that said things like "I'd rather have garlic bread" and got ace/aro colored stickers online. We gave the first sticker/button away for free and asked for a donation if you wanted more than one. Year two was basically the same as year 1, just with more people. Eventually we added a second monthly meeting as we were pushing 20 people at each meeting which meant it was hard for everyone to have a turn to talk.
Last summer we needed to raise money if we were going to continue tabling at Pride (and we were thinking of incorporating as a nonprofit which takes money) so we held a benefit show. I play music so I got my band and two others to play, and several of our members do comedy so they did standup sets in between the bands. We got a percentage of the door as well as donations from that which meant we had an actual budget. Mostly we just spent that on the Pride booth and supplies for our crafty members to make cooler merch though.
We also ended up getting asked to table some other queer-friendly events at the history museum, which we did. I'm not sure we gained any members from that, but some of the more gay/lesbian centered queer orgs were introduced to us and (sometimes) to asexuality and aromanticism so that was cool.
Basically my advice to someone wanting to start a group is
0.5) Find someone to join you - doing this is easier if you have at least one other person to share the load. If you don't already know someone who's aspec, just be prepared to ask someone to step up pretty shortly after starting.
1) Find a place to meet. Libraries are a potential but aren't always open in the evenings. Churches are alright but might drive away non-religious people. I'd say a queer-friendly coffee shop might be your best bet.
2) Make some fliers and go to Pride (or another well-attended queer event/locale). Hand them out to people and invite them to the group.
3) Host your first meeting. You can either do what we did and decide on rules or just jump into talking about being aspec.
3.5) Create a way to keep in touch with people so you can tell them when the next meeting is happening.
4) Host more meetings, adjusting as necessary.

I would like to write a Yoongi FF. I have so many ideas in my head (ADHD power) but: a) I don't know how to go about it, my first or even second language is not English b) I can't find my way on this platform at all yet. I don't understand why many authors start their stories by writing pairing/Word Count/genere/ at the beginning and then what scenes the story contains.
Is it necessary? What's the deal with it? And what is AU? Many stories have it in the description

hi!! i watched your nagito video on yt and loved it sooo much, & i’ve personally wanted to make an analysis video on something but the problem is that i have NO idea what, i just have characters and things that i like in my head atm. not sure how to get a coherent response out😭😭i was wondering if you had any advice to give in video stuff???
Honestly that video mostly was from a tumblr post I had made, one of the reblogs made me think about how the things I was talking about wasn't surface level so I thought to make a script about it. I used the tumblr post as reference for some of it but a lot of it was just articulating things onto a google doc and making it work. I didn't really have a written down outline but I had a general internal one that happened to work enough and that I could implement as sections. Most of this is to say a lot of it was improvised and generally I've been wanting to make videos like that forever but it took ages to start. I started with what I thought would be easiest and it worked out well. Basically, I guess my advice, or what helped me is that, try doing what you think maybe easy and build confidence from there. Just start somewhere, wherever you think maybe easiest so you're not intimidated to take the step, get confidence from being able to do the thing, and then with that confidence you can build your own bridge to what you want to do.
For writing analysis itself, I'm not sure how I could give advice for that realm as the way I got better at it is from reading a bunch of fanfic as a result of grief and starting to talk about Nagito a lot on tumblr, it just kinda happened and I'm super grateful it did. But the general idea is that if you have thoughts you want to express you can always write them down and revise them as much as you want, the important part is that you get them out in the first place. And if you don't have ideas on what exactly, then it's a little trickier but I'd say just try throwing words at feelings thoughts and ideas on what you want to express generally at files and see what sticks.
I always have been frustrated when I ask others for advice and they tell me to just start, it feels more complicated to me, but I think the fundamental of "just start," is more so, "don't overthink it" which is why I say just start where you think is easiest, even if you don't have a specific idea try recapping a character's lore you like or something small you think about. Just put what you think are easy words for a topic or idea at a document, voice them, edit it, and eventually you'll get something that can be a domino chain to reach greater things.
Hopefully this made sense I'm not really revising before posting, I have faith you can make something and I look forward to seeing what it is. Aka feel free to send a link in my inbox if you end up making something.

ALSO, if you’re anything like me and cannot focus, make yourself sit to study and start a stopwatch, stop it after your mind starts wandering or your brain comes to a halt with its activities. even if you end up only focusing for 2 minutes like i first did, you can schedule your study sessions accordingly and slowly build up the time!
note: none of this worked on me when my depression and anxiety was untreated so that should definitely be considered. the only reason i can even think of studying is because of the stage my meds have helped me reach

i don’t know about you guys but the main reason i am still on tumblr in 2024 is BECAUSE it is the most cloutless least influential social media app out there and that is the experience i am after. absolutely none of this will ever translate into significant attention or real success in my life and that is so beautiful.

more good news from tiktok: they’ve started blocking celebrities.
they’re calling it block party 2024. just blocking and ignoring countless celebrities who havent said shit about palestine. influencers, actors, anyone who went to the met gala, whatever, they’re getting blocked. and people keep talking about how cathartic it is, how good it feels, how they never realized they could DO that. there was some kind of subconscious law against blocking famous people, but it’s broken, and people are LOVING it. and it’s WORKING. a social media/digital advertising coordinator was talking about how ad companies are PANICKING, because they can’t accurately target anymore. so many big influencers, including fucking LIZZO started talking about palestine the MOMENT their follower counts started going down. and the best part? no one is forgiving them. lizzo posted a tiktok asking people to donate to palestinian families, and all the comments just said you’re a multimillionaire. put your money where your mouth is. blocked.
i feel like i’m witnessing the downfall of celebrity culture, right here right now. people are waking up.

Tip 11 is where I fall over. Professional editors cost thousands when you get to novels, and I'm still living the Starving Artist trope.
What's your advice for BROKE writers?
I've tried Beta Readers, but I don't get feedback from a lot of them. I'm currently working on reading out loud to interested family members, but I know that won't last long. I'm lucky it lasted this long, to be honest.
I gotta earn money to spend money...
What would your advice for just-starting-out young authors be?
I love new writers! I’ve never known a better way to escape my reality and live a thousand different lives.
I started writing when I was young, maybe 12 or 13 years old. I am now 25, and very much consider myself to be a child, but still, in my 10+ years of personal writing and classes, here are some of the best tips I can give anyone who is new to writing, regardless of age.
Read. Read. Read. Then read some more. The easiest and fastest way to learn how to write is by reading and studying how other people have written their stories. Study their balance of dialogue vs description vs action. Study the words they use and what they’re choosing to describe. Study the scenes that make you feel something, or pull you to the story even more, and dissect it until you understand how to do it.
Daydream. At night, in the morning, before and after school, during school, during work. When people are trying to talk to you, just daydream. Image worlds with populated moons. Imagine worlds with multiple human-like species all living in the same area. Image a boy who goes home and cries to his adoptive vampire parents, and girls who practices knife throwing every night to prepare for the apocalypse that no one sees coming. Dream of everything and anything because that’s how you keep and improve your creativity. Eventually you may even write something with it.
Write for yourself. Always start by writing what you enjoy, and love your characters and your stories. Everything about your first draft should be because you love the story, not what other people like. You will never please everyone, so start with yourself, and build a community with the ones who love your story as much as you do.
Do it on your own timeline. If you want to write a book in a month, edit the next and publish right after, do it. If you want to write the first five chapters of 8 books without finishing, do it. If, like me, you want to write your first novel at 18 years old, and 7 years later still not feel ready to publish, that’s ok! You are not falling behind anyone else, you are exactly where you should be on your own path.
Practice. Your writing will improve with practice, that’s how it works, it’s how it always works. No way to skip right to publishing a first draft and becoming famous for it. Practice and just keep writing, you will improve.
Challenge yourself. While you may love fantasy or romance, or maybe all your story ideas are too big for only one book and they all end up being series’, you need to try new things. Write a mystery short story. Write poetry on how you feel. Write one page on how you could survive a zombie apocalypse as long as you have your coffee in the morning, it doesn’t matter, just try new things. Trying new things is how I wrote this haiku: Take a deep inhale, Breathe fresh air into my lungs, I savorfreedom. Is it the greatest haiku ever? No, but it makes me happy, and reminds me that I can write, good or bad, and still be proud of myself.
Keep all your projects. Good or bad. Look back on them years later and think, yeah that was terrible, at least I’m better now. Or maybe think, this wasn’t as bad as I thought it was. It’s a progressive journey. You can take your time. DONT EVER SHAME YOUR YOUNGER SELF FOR THEIR WORK. THEY TRIED THEIR HARDEST AND WROTE AS BEST THEY COULD. WE ARE PROUD OF OURSELVES, NOT EMBARRASSED OR SHAMED. Whether the work is from years ago or days go. Be kind to yourself, no one else owes you that.
Compare. Compare to popular novels, compare to your friends stories or to people online. Compare and see if your character are developed enough, or if your story makes sense, or if it’s relatable. When comparing however, keep in mind that your written style will be different than all others writers. Your first novel will not be the same as an author’s 10th book that just went viral on TikTok. It takes practice and time. Compare for style, technique, structure and plot. Not for popularity, worth, importance, and don’t feel down thinking that someone writing at a higher grade level makes them better, it doesn’t.
Share your work. If you are embarrassed, use a pen name. That’s perfectly fine. Put your work out there and get feedback. Having one person saying your story is (negative criticism here) is going to happen, don’t freak out. It doesn’t mean your story is flawed and should be tossed. If most people are saying that, then maybe it’s time to revisit the story and plot. Getting feedback from people reading your story is important, you want to ask specific questions so you don’t get generic answers. Get real reviews from real people, the mean voice in your head doesn’t get a say.
Learn the difference between perfect and done. I know, I know. Perfectionists around the world just scoffed and thought ‘I would if I could’. Here’s the thing, it’ll never be perfect. A word won’t be right, you can’t find the right way to convey an emotion, your choice of vocabulary isn’t up to your standards, I get it. You want your work to be absolute perfection so that everyone loves it and no one can say a bad thing about it, but it doesn’t work that way. Instead make it to ‘complete’, then nitpick some details, then it’s done. Done is good, it’s where you want to be.
Self-publishing? Pay for a professional editor and a graphic designer. It makes a difference, I promise.
There’s lots of others, but I would say as a writer-starter-pack, these should get you started, then you will learn lessons all on your own, or find them as you’re writing later on. Truly, just have fun, and the rest will come with time.
Happy Writing!
