As a long time httyd fan who has been heavily involved in the fandom since the first movie and who has spent years working in the animation industry, I’d like to share my thoughts on the new httyd movie. Keep in mind, this is just my personal opinion and it's completely fine if you disagree with me. I just want to say a little something about all this that really bothers me.

The core reason that Dreamworks and Universal made this film is that it’s a quick and easy cash grab for them. Thats it. They don’t care about telling a good story or making a “better” version of the original movie for fans or even having an accurate portrayal of the characters/story. It’s purely about money. They know that fans of the original film will go see this movie, whether it’s good or bad. And those guaranteed ticket sales are all that matter to the studios. And with Universal, it has the added bonus of being a cheap promotional and merchandising opportunity for the new HTTYD land in Orlando that opens around the same time that the film is premiering in theaters.

And to help the studios make even more money out of this, they are using non-unionized VFX companies around the world to make this film, so that they can get cheaper labor and push the artists to do more that would be against American union standards. The same thing has probably happened with the costuming and fabrication for the filming, hence why the costumes look un-weathered and the sets look cheap. They don’t want to pay for the extra time and effort that it would take to make the practical bits of the production look good.

On top of all this, Dreamworks has already announced that they’re shutting down all their in-house animation projects in favor of using AI and outsourcing projects to cheaper international non-union studios.

With all this in mind, I just can’t support this film and I will not be seeing it in theaters. And I hope that others will do the same.

The only way to stop all these horrible “live action” remakes (which are actually just realistically animated remakes) is to not buy tickets to see them. Money is all that matters to these studios, and if they don’t make any money off of it, then they will stop and try something different. Maybe they'll even go back to focusing on original stories!

That’s the power that we hold as audiences. Our wallets help drive the decisions that the executives make. So support unique storytelling and gorgeous cinematography in movies. Support indie films. Support animators as they're fighting for fair pay and better contracts. But don't support a mediocre shot-for-shot remake riding on the coattails of an already successful film.

And I just want to wrap all this up by saying I have absolutely no hate towards anyone that has worked on the new film. Toothless looks incredible and I know the artists and creatives involved in this project did the best they could with what they were given.

But I also know that those same artists have so many more brilliant ideas that they would’ve loved to be given the creative freedom to do. I just wish hollywood would be willing to take a chance and let them do it.

CHAT SOMEONE JUST BOOKMARKED MY FIC FOR THE FIRST TIME

Edit after the following ramble escalation: Thank you for wording it like this 🤩 I seem to have a strange getting-lore-by-mere-answering-thing sometimes 😂🫶

Maybe the most I want to scream about the oldest clones of Owl Squad and actually two of the remaining ones of Generation 1 clones of Rex’ age: Source and Forest ✨

ARC trooper Source is else. When I got the anon ask back then and The Source Code blurted out of my wrist (that answering-thing! 🤯🤷🏽‍♀️), I thought I just played around with that imagination of knowing what will happen because of the ask. I was extremely mistaken! 😱👀

Before that ask I had raw imaginations about all of those characters. Many question marks, but with drawing them and thinking about their details, appearance and items I always got a bit lore from out of nothing like they would whisper it to me and show me flashes of scenes of their lives ✨

Until the ask, the most reluctant, mysterious and grumpy clone was Source. I only knew: Quiet, grumpy, data specialist, hacker, a good one but not really showing.

He seemed to stare me over the rim of his datapad like „Dare me.“ And I internally stared back like „You kriffin‘ little 🤬“ It was like he didn’t want me to figure him. I tried to draw him and failed! I basically fought with him and I thought myself „Dank Farrik what dark secret are you hiding? Gimme lore, di’kut!“ I just got that internal unimpressed grump glare or a snort. Am I weird? I argue with my immature half-plotted OCs!?

Because of thinking about the ask – and I will forever thank anon for that – I suddenly could see it right before my eyes, the dark secret Source has. The reason and an actual explanation why he‘s a quiet unbearable grump only interested in data and his closest vode: This man has an impossible mission he and no one else would ever ask for – except the Force theirselves.

Source knows fragments what is about to happen with the Republic from his damn former life where the story is one of a galaxy far away and a long time ago ☺️🙏 Time- and soul travelling is some tricky 4D whatever stuff, my brain fractalizes when thinking about it more, so I better let it be 😂

I could only nod eagerly on that load of lore I got from somewhere and actually wrote a thing 🥰

So it‘s kind of all around ARC trooper Source.

The good thing is, he was never completely alone. As the Force works with duality rules like we know them by the nature of our galaxy too, his batch brother Forest was at his side since they were tubies.

ARF trooper Forest is also calm and frowns often, but that’s just due to the circumstances of war. He seems to be quite the opposite to Source in almost every other thing. When they were cadets it didn’t show that strongly, but the more time went by, the more strange things seem to happen around Forest.

Source noticed a pattern with time, but it couldn’t be – it wasn’t evident, no causalities, no connections, not even similarities of cases except one completely ridiculous recurring fact: When Forest was around, not even doing big actions or movements and when he closed his eyes for a moment, or breathed deeply, straightened up or got calm, in the next moments happened something… utterly convenient coincidences. Sheer luck. Impossible, unthinkable output of situations, that seemed to be lost or not to solve.

Source and Forest had a strong bond from the beginning, so it was clear that Source, massively stressed from his burden and basically paranoid asked Forest already through cadet time about his observation of that strange ‚lucky coincidences‘, that blasted every statistics but subtle enough and only recognizable if somebody looked closer.

Forest could only shrug and told him like it was the most normal thing in the galaxy „I just have a kind of intuition what might happen, vod. Like a feeling in my stomach or a whisper of a silent voice passing by like a breeze out of nowhere. This is surely something all of us could feel, if most of the vode would calm their minds a bit and just… kind of listen more?“

Source was not as surprised as he thought he should be and as his head aches anyway most of the time, he decided to tell Forest about his own form of ‚intuition‘, what was a mad euphemism and belittlement for the flashes of detailed info he got and he was never crazy or informed enough to fantazise something that complex from only Kamino cadet knowledge.

He also told him, that this kind of intuition Forest has, is not common but special, proving it with the simple fact of that this talent would be extremely helpful in combat and would get a whole own training unit if it was a known thing. So – it wasn’t.

That was the beginning of the both of them talking about what the kriff the Force had thought of to beat and gift two clone cadets with those circumstances 😱✨

And the beginning of my notes grid growing with half-sorted plot ideas 😂🤷🏽‍♀️

Something something, maybe live action remakes that exist for the sole reason of retelling a story without animation so people can "better connect" to it and deal with it "realistically" have people who are making it who have no idea what the original point is. Something something, maybe classic tv shows and movies are so popular because they were well written and done well and don't need changing. Something something maybe live action remakes ( instead of remakes which are VERY different) actually suck as a concept in general

Viggo glanced at Hiccup, then at the dagger on his belt.

“You know how to fight,” Viggo said, going back to setting up the Maces and Talons board. It was a nice day, so they were playing outside, Toothless and Elding tousling in the grass. It seemed the dragons had found a bit of dragon nip and were play fighting to see who would get it.

Hiccup sat cross legged in front of the board. “No, I mean, like you,” he said. He reached for some pieces to help Viggo set up the board.

Viggo raised his one good eyebrow. “So, you want to learn the art of manipulation? That… doesn’t sound like you.”

Hiccup sighed. He dropped a piece, put his head in his hands. “Yes, but I think—”

“There was no manipulating a man like Drago,” Viggo said softly. He reached a hand across the game to gently take Hiccup by the shoulder. “You could not have prevented your father’s death.” Viggo knew that was what was bothering Hiccup so much. He was very much still grieving, and one of the things he did was try to come up with ways in which he could have done better, ways in which he could have saved him.

But there was nothing, and Viggo knew this. He didn’t want Hiccup to get lost in the spiral of madness that was reminiscing and self doubt. He’d tried telling Hiccup he’d done his best in the moment, but that wasn’t good enough for the new, heavily-burdened chief of Berk.

“I-I know.” Hiccup lowered his hands from his face, but didn’t meet Viggo’s gaze. Instead he took his hand from his shoulder, gazed at it as he began to draw imaginary lines into his palm. It was the hand Viggo had burned on hot stone in the volcano, so he barely felt it, but it was nice.

“Do you?” Viggo took Hiccup’s hand with his other, stopping his movement, giving the fingers a careful squeeze.

Hiccup sighed. He looked at the Maces and Talons board, then at Viggo, finally meeting his gaze. Tears glimmered in his eyes, and it broke Viggo’s heart.

“T-teach me to fight,” Hiccup got out, breath hitched.

That was all the answer he needed. Hiccup wasn’t ready to let this go.

Viggo released him and gestured to the Maces and Talons board. He gave him a soft smile. “Well, it all starts here.”

Björg could also have gotten a Deadly Nadder or Speedstinger but i laughed at their size difference when i drew the Stormcutter and here we are XD

Instead her family actually raises Speedstingers from egg to hunt fish for them! So they have a small pack of Speedstingers to fish for them haha

Björg has an older brother named Thora who is also very mischievous but in a kinder way, Björg can be cruel with her pranks which goes against her older brothers nature and he's a lot shyer or rather calm.

Thora is a trader and is often out n about with his Deadly Nadder (also nameless help) to trade goodies for their island to others.

okayokay, so here's the lore to my lil dragon hybrid

so I kinda cooked up this hc that giant spiders exist on southern islands, right on the edge of the map.

Hidden in tunnels below the earth and spread between enormous trees are rows and rows of webs, thick as ropes.

It is not unusual for dragons to get trapped between these webs, tangling their wings and tails in those deadly strands of silk, their spikes and claws and teeth unable to save them from their gruesome fate once they got caught.

But

It is also not unusual, as we all know, for species to adapt to their environment over the course of many generations, thanks to coincidental mutations and recombination that change their genepool, causing variation in their Geno-and Phenotypes, which gets single individuals to be better fit for a new environment and then reproduce and hand those certain advantageous characteristics over to their offspring.

(so much for my side quest about evolution)

Now, let's say a certain dragon, or a small group of that dragon species, got abducted by a storm or a nature catastrophe, or vikings suddenly inhabiting their living space, sent off to this island with the giant spiders. (This process is called gene-drift, specifically founder effect, if I translated that correctly). So of course they had to adapt, using the now reduced variety of gene variants in their genepool.

And now let's say, that this tiny population of, in this case, Deathsongs, had a few individuals who had a row of claws down each of their wings, which helped them fly between the spiderwebs by cutting through them.

These individuals survived because they had a stronger biological fitness, and maybe they even reproduced with the spiders, who knows, nature is crazy.

So that's how, thanks to biology, this little Spidersong (it's what I call the hybrids, ehehe) managed to survive and learn from the spiders, using those techniques of building tunnels and making webs, once it was back on the mainland.

I like to think that only few actually survived this process of evolution, and that they're now scattered across the southern lands because the original island they inhabited with the spiders got swallowed by the ocean

Maybe I'll come up with a story on how our Spidersong handles humans, who knows.

How is it that in my fanfic days I could churn out chapter after chapter after chapter without even thinking about it, a trilogy of How To Train Your Dragon fics that are all about 50K words each, a 100-150K ‘Dreaded Fic’ of a fandom I shall not name, multiple Pokémon fics with god knows how many words

And yet I get worn out writing a sentence in my original story
