Cold hands that burned like fire turned him on his side and water that cut like steel slid past his lips, splattering onto the frozen ground.
Shivers wracked his body, his muscles spasming, more and more water dripping to the ground as he coughed.
Something shifted and brown filled his vision, concerned blue eyes staring down at him.
"Hey, doc', c'mon you gotta stay awake - "
Everything flickered, brown and blue blurring together until it felt like he was drowning all over again.
" - stay awake you wang ba dan - "
Finally, Simon passed out.

Why Temperature Control is Crucial in Patient Care: A Look at the Mercury Mini Heater Unit
Tumblr media
Temperature control is a critical aspect of patient care, particularly in clinical settings where maintaining a stable environment is essential for recovery and overall well-being. Whether it's during surgical procedures, post-operative care, or general patient comfort, the ability to precisely manage temperature can significantly impact outcomes. The Mercury Mini Portable Heater Unit stands out as a vital tool in this regard, offering a range of features designed to meet the demanding needs of healthcare providers.
The Importance of Temperature Control in Healthcare
Maintaining an optimal temperature is not just about comfort; it’s about patient safety and effective treatment. Hypothermia, for instance, is a common concern during surgeries, where patients’ body temperatures can drop due to anesthesia and the surrounding environment. This drop can lead to complications such as increased blood loss, a higher risk of infection, and longer recovery times. Conversely, in other scenarios, overheating can pose risks, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly or those with certain medical conditions.
In neonatal care, for example, premature infants require a carefully regulated thermal environment to ensure proper growth and development. Similarly, in post-operative recovery, maintaining a stable temperature helps to reduce metabolic stress and promotes healing. These examples underscore the necessity of reliable temperature control equipment in healthcare settings.
Introducing the Mercury Mini Heater Unit
The Mercury Mini Portable Heater Unit is specifically designed to address the challenges of temperature control in medical environments. Its compact and portable design makes it easy to use in various settings, from operating rooms to patient bedsides, without taking up excessive space or requiring complex installation.
Key Features of the Mercury Mini
One of the standout features of the Mercury Mini is its touch screen control, which allows healthcare professionals to easily set and monitor the temperature. The user-friendly interface is crucial in fast-paced medical environments where time is of the essence. The unit offers a temperature range of 35°C to 42°C, providing the flexibility needed to cater to different patient care requirements.
Another significant feature is the PLC-based electronics, which ensure precise temperature regulation and reliable performance. This advanced technology minimizes the risk of temperature fluctuations that could compromise patient safety.
The Mercury Mini also boasts a flow rate of 5 to 6 liters per minute, ensuring efficient and consistent heating. Its 5-liter water capacity is sufficient for extended use without frequent refilling, reducing interruptions in patient care. Additionally, the unit includes two output circuits, allowing it to serve multiple patients or be used for different applications simultaneously, enhancing its versatility.
The Role of the Mercury Mini in Enhancing Patient Care
By integrating these features, the Mercury Mini Heater Unit plays a vital role in enhancing patient care. Its portability means it can be easily moved to where it is needed most, whether in a busy hospital ward or a specialized clinic. The ability to maintain precise temperature control helps healthcare providers to prevent complications related to hypothermia or overheating, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
Moreover, the open tank design and straightforward controls mean that the Mercury Mini is easy to maintain and operate, ensuring that healthcare professionals can focus on patient care rather than equipment management.
Conclusion
In conclusion, temperature control is a crucial element in patient care that can significantly influence recovery and overall health outcomes. The Mercury Mini Portable Heater Unit offers an effective solution for healthcare providers, combining advanced technology with ease of use to ensure that patients receive the best possible care. With its reliable performance and user-friendly design, the Mercury Mini stands out as an essential tool for maintaining optimal temperature conditions in various medical settings.

Oh goody! Near record highs tomorrow, the temperature jumping ten degrees in two days, and then a four day excessive heat watch!
...time for the rest of the country to start mocking us for having 'unseasonably warm weather' that's under 90 degrees.

hiii ! im a sucker for the early stages of crushing, so i was wondering if i could request a hotch fic where it's chilly out, and you forget to bring a jacket so hotch offers his suit coat to you and it's just so warm and it smells so good that you end up blurting out how much you like the way he smells and how much you appreciate him. aH idk i hope this made sense 😭 ty!! 🫶
Tumblr media
a/n: omg anon, i'm literally OBSESSED with this!! i hope you like it <3 warnings: none, pure fluff, almost 1k words (damn)
Most people would say Nebraska is a lovely place to be. Breathtaking views, mostly nice folks and no 100-degree weather like Quantico, Virginia. But you had to disagree.
The team has been called in for a sensitive case regarding four missing children. So, the team immediately grabbed their go-bags and hopped on the jet.
Now having settled at the police station, you realised – you had forgotten to pack a jacket. The one essential for this kind of weather was currently hanging on a rack in your flat. After you had gotten blood on it at the last case, you cleaned it and hung it up so you could pack it again. Damnit, you thought to yourself, you thought you had packed it. Now you would have to try to stay somewhat warm and not catch hypothermia, while also staying sharp so you could get the children in time. Great.
You prayed that Hotch would group you with Reid, so you could stay at the station and work the geographical profile. But with your luck, of course you were chosen to check out the abduction sites – which were all not just in the middle of nowhere, but also in the open aka the cold – with no one less than the unit chief himself.
After hyping yourself up a bit, you were convinced you could do it. The car ride was nice, the heating making it enjoyable, but the moment you stepped into the cold you knew you couldn’t do it. As much as you tried to keep your teeth from clattering and your whole body from shivering, sometimes you could hear your teeth or see your hands shaking when you took them away from the warm comfort of your body.
You hoped Hotch wouldn’t notice it, but who where you fooling? He probably knew you forgot your jacket before you even noticed.
“Why aren’t you wearing a jacket, agent? It’s freezing. Did you forget it in the car?” to everybody else it sounded like everything else he said, stoic, emotionless but after working with him for quite some time you could make out the genuine worry in his voice.
Immediately trying to reassure him you said, “Oh, I think I forgot it at the station, but it’s fine, don’t worry about it.” The moment the lie left your mouth, you both could hear that that wasn’t the truth.
Of course, Aaron had already noticed your missing jacket in the jet while everybody was wrapping themselves in their thickest winter clothing, you obliviously kept reading your book.
He didn’t have to think much before shrugging off his coat and offering it to you, already holding it in the perfect way for you to just slip into it. Ever the gentleman.
“Oh, that’s really nice of you, but that’s not necessary, really,” you hoped that he would blame your reddening cheeks on the cold and not his boyfriend like behaviour. You don’t know why you were this flustered, you were sure he would do the same thing for Emily or even Reid.
“Please take it, you’ve been shivering since we arrived, and I don’t want to lose one of my best agents because of hypothermia. It really is no problem.”
He wiggled the coat a little bit and you were actually too cold to resist the promise of a nice and warm coat. Stepping forward you let your arms slip into the warm fabric before closing one of the buttons in the front.
It was easy to tell that it was way too big, but it was so warm also smelled just like Hotch’s cologne.
“Thank you, but you really didn’t have to, Hotch. I don’t want you to freeze now,” you told him in an almost scolding voice.
“I’ll live. Shall we get back to the scenes, see if there’s anything we’ve missed?” after humming in agreement the two of you fell into your usual rhythm again.
There was one problem – now that the cold wasn’t distracting you, it was his scent that lingered on the coat. And it was not just his cologne but also something that was just undeniably him. Masculine, raw and absolutely to die for.
You knew you couldn’t keep your feelings for the unit chief a secret for long. After confiding to the BAU-girls at a get together in the local bar, the rest seemed to catch on rather quickly too. The only person that was still completely oblivious was Hotchner himself. What would shock you, was that he also had feelings for you, but just genuinely didn’t think that you would like him as a friend or even a romantic partner. And you were also very oblivious to the looks he gave you and how often he smiled around you.
Suddenly his voice brought you back to reality “Is everything all right? Are you still cold? Do you want to go to the station?” Still lost in your own though you answer “Oh no, it’s all right. Your jacket smells nice by the way,” without really realising that you had just said that out loud you add more conscious now, “I think we did what we could here. We should head back to the others.”
Immediately after saying it you turn around and walk back to the car, leaving a baffled and slightly blushing Aaron Hotchner behind. In that moment he was very glad that you didn’t see him.
But now he knew, he definitely had to find a way to tell you how he feels, or else you are going to be the death of him.

Gravity (Part 2)
This may be becoming a thing. There will be at least one more chapter and I have no idea what to call this thing. Maybe by the end I'll know. 😅
Gn reader x Raphael
Warnings: Hypothermia, language (but I think that's a given in a Raph fic?)
Part 1 Part 3
Tumblr media
It had been one week. One week since he'd slipped. One week since the fever carried him to your rooftop.
You haven't spoken. More specifically, he hasn't spoken. Apart from texting you when he made it home like you insisted he did every night, it had been radio silence. You texted him before his patrol like you always did, and he stared at his phone, expressionless, before putting it back in his pocket.
What could he say?
He'd already had the conversation a thousand times in his head, and as far as he was concerned, it didn't need to be said. He didn't need you to let him down easy.
Because you'd mean it. Every damn word. You're sorry. He's your best friend. Nothing has to change.
But it would change, there was no way it couldn't. Things were different now.
That night had been the worst of it. He'd left not long after his confession. At that point, just the sound of your voice was enough to make him weep, and he didn't want to make things worse. Not that he thought they could *get* worse.
He made up some excuse about Leo calling it early, and ran.
He was running now, through the freezing rain, a sudden cold snap in the middle of spring, and hoping that between the temperature and the downpour hammering into his coat, he could think about anything else.
It wasn't long before he was considering ditching the coat. It was already soaked through, and weighing him down, which was hard to do.
That gave him pause.
He stopped, ducking under an overhang, and opened his coat, pulling the fabric back to expose his side. He twisted and looked at the small device mounted onto his shell just under his shoulder blade. There was supposed to be a little red light. There wasn't.
Shit.
They each had them. One of the first inventions D had come up with after they'd started doing patrols as kids.
A blizzard had suddenly torn through the city one night, and they were woefully unprepared with only winter coats. The cold dropped their body temperatures, and then them. Splinter had to hunt across the rooftops until he found them, asleep and hypothermic, huddled behind a construction dumpster.
Donnie didn't leave his lab for days. He blamed himself, he should have known the blizzard was coming, that their gear was insufficient, he should have had *some* kind of backup heat supply. No matter how many times his family told him otherwise, it was his fault, and he would never let it happen again.
So he built something to fix it. Raph didn't really get a lot of the specifics, but the overall was that the small devices "converted kinetic energy into heat that was then stored and distributed throughout the inside of their shells." Or, as Raph understands it, as long as you keep moving, you won't die.
One night a few weeks ago, someone had gotten lucky and he had taken a rusted rebar to the chest that had shattered on impact. His regulator had been damaged by the shrapnel, but the weather had already been warming up, and then the season hit and it was forgotten about.
The rain must have been the final nail, only the exterior was watertight. It was dead. He could already feel the cold and damp setting in. He needed to get home. Fast.
He set off, the only sound other than the roar of the rain was the gradually slowing heartbeat that pounded in his ears.
*Fuck* it was cold.
It wasn't long before his waterlogged coat became too much to carry. He ditched it behind an air conditioning unit, and kept moving.
Hailstones felt like bullets as they pelted bare skin, and through the sheets of rain, the haze of cold and exhaustion that had started at the edges was encroaching. It wasn't long before he was too tired to think.
He was moving on pure instinct, without even the presence of mind to pray he could make it somewhere safe. Somewhere in the back of his mind a tiny Leo was lecturing him for not hitting his emergency signal.
He stumbles. He is so, so tired. The soft darkness of sleep is pulling at him like a rip tide. He drags himself to the next rooftop, barely touching down before he collapses.

The Best News of Last Week - March 13, 2023
🐝 - Did you hear about the honeybee vaccine? It's creating quite the buzz! But seriously, it's a major breakthrough in the fight against American foulbrood and could save billions of bees.
1. Transgender health care is now protected in Minnesota
Tumblr media
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed an executive order protecting and supporting access to gender-affirming health care for LGBTQ people in the state, amidst Republican-backed efforts across the country to limit transgender health care. The order upholds the essential values of One Minnesota where all people, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community, are safe, celebrated, and able to live lives full of dignity and joy.
Numerous medical organizations have said that access to gender-affirming care is essential to the health and wellness of gender diverse people, while states like Tennessee, Arizona, Utah, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, South Dakota, and Florida have passed policies or laws restricting transgender health care.
2. First vaccine for honeybees could save billions
Tumblr media
The US government has approved the world's first honeybee vaccine to fight against American foulbrood, a bacterial disease that destroys bee colonies vital for crop pollination.
Developed by biotech company Dalan Animal Health, the vaccine integrates some of the foulbrood bacteria into royal jelly, which is then fed to the queen by the worker bees, resulting in the growing bee larvae developing immunity to foulbrood. The vaccine aims to limit the damage caused by the infectious disease, for which there is currently no cure, and promote the development of vaccines for other diseases affecting bees.
3. Teens rescued after days stranded in California snowstorm: "We were already convinced we were going to die"
Tumblr media
The recent snowstorms in California have resulted in dangerous conditions for hikers and residents in mountain communities. Two teenage hikers were rescued by the San Bernardino County sheriff's department after getting lost in the mountains for 10 days.
The boys were well-prepared for the hike but were not prepared for the massive amounts of snow that followed. They were lucky to survive, suffering from hypothermia and having to huddle together for three nights to stay warm.
Yosemite National Park has had to be closed indefinitely due to the excessive snowfall.
4. La Niña, which worsens Atlantic hurricanes and Western droughts, is gone
Tumblr media
The La Nina weather phenomenon, which increases Atlantic hurricane activity and worsens western drought, has ended after three years, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That's usually good news for the United States and other parts of the world, including drought-stricken northeast Africa, scientists said.
The globe is now in what's considered a "neutral" condition.
5. Where there's gender equality, people tend to live longer
Tumblr media
Both women and men are likely to live longer when a country makes strides towards gender equality, according to a new global study that authors believe to be the first of its kind.
The study was published in the journal PLOS Global Public Health this week. It adds to a growing body of research showing that advances in women's rights benefit everyone. "Globally, greater gender equality is associated with longer [life expectancy] for both women and men and a widening of the gender gap in [life expectancy]," they conclude.
6. New data shows 1 in 7 cars sold globally is an EV, and combustion engine car sales have decreased by 25% since 2017
Tumblr media
Electric vehicles are the key technology to decarbonise road transport, a sector that accounts for 16% of global emissions. Compared with 2020, sales nearly doubled to 6.6 million (a sales share of nearly 9%), bringing the total number of electric cars on the road to 16.5 million.
Sales were highest in China, where they tripled relative to 2020 to 3.3 million after several years of relative stagnation, and in Europe, where they increased by two-thirds year-on-year to 2.3 million. Together, China and Europe accounted for more than 85% of global electric car sales in 2021

I saw your post about Dorothy's token and now all I can think about is Rhine Girl Bathwater
Rhine Girl Bathwater Catalogue - Peer-Reviewed By Freaks, For Freaks.
Saria: Incredibly salty and somehow denser that drying concrete. Drinking this will give you instant kidney stones forever.
Ptilopsis: If you ever wondered "what would it be like if I could drink Windows XP?", then inquire no further. One sip of this will immediately fill your body with malware and create a permanent Bonzi Buddy tulpa for you.
Ifrit: 9.500.000.000 Scoville heat units. Strong, potent flavor with a tinge of lime. Sends you into either catholic girl beast mode or cardiac arrest, 50% chance of either.
Muelsyse: You are just straight up drinking Muelsyse. Technically cannibalism, but she's okasies with it winkyface.
Mayer: Somehow tastes of BBQ sauce and makes you sprint at top speed at the nearest wall. Squeeze sweat from her sweater into the beverage for a bigger kick of flavor and kinetic impact against the wall.
Magallan: A beverage that fills you with wanderlust in addition to regular old lust. Upon imbibing in this emperor of drinks, you'll black out and regain consciousness ass naked in the middle of a frozen tundra, where you'll learn a beautiful lesson, acquire a taste for the great outdoors, and pass away from hypothermia.
Astgenne: If one could drink the experience of sticking a fork into an outlet, this would be it, first degree burns and organ failure included.
Silence: The one item in this catalogue that won't kill you (directly). Would you do that to an upstanding nice lady like Olivia, though? (the answer is yes you would and Saria knows what to write on your gravestone)
Kirsten: Item unavailable. She's never taken a bath in her life.

Skyeward Fic Recs
Here's a new list including both old and recent works! I'm always on the hunt for beautifully written fics with great plots and compelling characterization - or you know, just enjoyable and quick fixes, that too - so this list will be updated from time to time. (Note: some fics are abandoned or incomplete.)
Tumblr media
The Head & The Heart series by Poetgirl925 is my all-time favorite long fic, featuring a non-HYDRA Agent Ward who ends up planning and working on operations with Skye at the Triskelion. It's the lesser-known sister of the famous Under Your Skin fic by the same author.
the death of peace of mind by hellfxres involves a Hellfire! Ward working as a firefighter. That is, until Agent Daisy Johnson shows up at his station. I haven't finished reading this, but the premise is so interesting that it's on my list.
There is Nothing Special About Grant Ward by NezumiPi is one of my only two bookmarks. That's how good it is - a complex and absorbing exploration of Grant Ward's childhood as the son of a mob boss, his abusive relationship with Garrett, and his subsequent crimes. In custody at the Playground, Ward slowly is allowed to participate in operations again. (Note: this is not for the apologists and while there are interactions between Skye and Ward, they are not romantic in nature.)
You Know You're My Saving Grace by GreenEyedStone is historical fiction set in WW2. Unapologetically Skyeward, it follows the life of Skye, the daughter of the United States Air Force Major Phil Coulson, as she gets married to the soldier Grant Ward and has a child. She works on the frontlines in Europe as a journalist. (I'll admit I'm biased as I beta'd some of it, but I think this fic is criminally underrated.)
How to Keep Your Distance, Unsuccessfully by miniaturesketches, aka me, is an old two-shot. Set in Season 4, Daisy Johnson is on the run as a wanted vigilante, hunting down the Watchdogs. When she's severely injured, there's only one person she can call - Grant Ward, her old partner at S.H.I.E.L.D. (Note: "Ward Is Not HYDRA" fic.)
Four Bullets and A Dirty Smile by thefrenchmistake is one of the most popular Skyeward fics of the early 2020s. Not S.H.I.E.L.D-friendly, it's a classic Grant Ward redemption story. But my personal favorite from this author is the oneshot Maybe in One of Those, We Can Win It All, involving the multiple tragic universes in which Skye and Ward meet. So much angst.
I'll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year's Day by go_astray_with_me, who is the queen of fun-to-read Skyeward. I'm always excited to read her oneshots (and PWP) when they turn up on the Skye/Grant Ward tag. This one is pretty much as the title says.
The Fine Dimensional Line by Kylia has one of the most exciting plots I've read. Grant Ward and Kara Palamas, desperate to escape HYDRA! Skye, take a gamble on one of Fitz's mad ideas - and end up in an alternate world, one where the fine line between loyalty and treachery, love and hate, worked out completely differently.
Real or Not by DrawntoDarkness is a classic oneshot. After being tortured, Skye has trouble differentiating truth from her implanted memories. She spends a day with each member of the team.
The Persistence of Memory by Eienvine is a "Ward goes through T.A.H.I.T.I." fic. James Shaughnessy is a respectable but average person living a respectable but average life . . . except for the dreams. Except for the scars on his body that he can't explain. Except for Daisy, the beautiful girl who comes to his restaurant sometimes and looks at him like she knows him.
The White Silence by starshine is a beautifully written oneshot. After they crash in the Canadian mountains, Ward must get an injured Skye to Providence. The fact that he is an enemy of SHIELD is of little importance in the face of hypothermia threatening to set in.
A Spy Like Me by colormeblue. After the Battle of New York, Grant Ward decides that he no longer wants Hydra to win its war with SHIELD and becomes a triple agent. Nick Fury gives him orders to work with Coulson's team in order to get valuable intelligence on Hydra but Grant finds his triple status and working with a team quite difficult.
Shades of Grey by imadetheline is another slowburn, Grant Ward redemption fic (unfortunately, abandoned). It was one of the first SW fics I read and I still have fond memories of it!
More coming soon!

How Hyper-Hypothermia Units Enhance Patient Recovery: Mercury Healthcare
Tumblr media
In the realm of modern medicine, precision and control over patient conditions during and after treatment are crucial for successful outcomes. Hyper-hypothermia units play a significant role in this aspect, providing essential temperature regulation that enhances patient recovery. These units, designed to either elevate or lower body temperatures as required, are vital in various medical treatments and surgical procedures. Mercury Healthcare, a leading manufacturer and supplier in India, stands at the forefront of this technology, offering top-quality hyper-hypothermia units that ensure optimal patient care and recovery.
Understanding Hyper-Hypothermia Units
Hyper-hypothermia units are medical devices used to control a patient's body temperature. Hyperthermia refers to raising the body temperature, while hypothermia involves lowering it. These units are equipped with advanced technology to precisely manage temperature, ensuring that it stays within the desired range. This control is crucial in various medical scenarios, including surgeries, post-operative care, and specific treatments for conditions like cancer and cardiac arrest.
Enhancing Patient Recovery
Optimizing Surgical Outcomes
During surgeries, maintaining an optimal body temperature is critical. Hyper-hypothermia units ensure that the patient’s body temperature remains stable, reducing the risk of complications such as infections or excessive bleeding. This stability contributes to better surgical outcomes and faster recovery times.
Post-Operative Care
After surgery, patients often face the challenge of maintaining stable body temperatures. Hyper-hypothermia units aid in this by providing consistent temperature management, which is essential for healing and reducing post-operative complications. Patients benefit from quicker recovery times and improved overall outcomes.
Cancer Treatment
Hyperthermia therapy, where body tissue is exposed to high temperatures, is a promising approach in cancer treatment. It can enhance the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy. Hyper-hypothermia units enable precise control of the temperature, ensuring the therapy's effectiveness while minimizing damage to healthy tissues.
Cardiac Arrest and Trauma Care
Inducing hypothermia in patients who have suffered cardiac arrest or severe trauma can significantly improve survival rates and neurological outcomes. Controlled cooling slows down the body's metabolic processes, protecting vital organs, especially the brain, from damage. Hyper-hypothermia units are indispensable in emergency settings for such critical interventions.
Neonatal Care
In neonatal care, maintaining the right body temperature for premature or ill infants is vital. Hyper-hypothermia units provide the necessary thermal support to these vulnerable patients, enhancing their chances of survival and reducing complications.

My submission for @gwynrielweeksofficial - Prompt: Warriors
And it's not just Gwynriel! We have Nessian and Emorie too.
Tumblr media
The Heart of a Warrior on Ao3 - Sneak Peak
Rhys had to confess. Over the past few months, he had found himself increasingly distracted, neglecting his responsibilities as High Lord. But, that ended today.
Emerie, Nesta, and Gwyn sat in Rhysand’s office four months after the birth of Nyx. Between Feyre’s recovery, worrying about Nyx’s development, the interloper Bryce, and the mask incident, he’d been too busy to look at the report Azriel and Cassian had created about what the Valkyries had dealt with in the rite until now.
And it was clear, if they wanted to be a serious fighting unit, they had a lot to learn.
“I commend you on all your achievements, but nearly dying of hypothermia?” he exclaimed, flicking through the pages, “If Balthazar hadn't been there, that would have finished you both off. Simple survival training would have prevented this,” Rhysand sighed out.
It wasn’t enough that they had survived the Blood Rite; they had made near-grave errors, and only by the grace of the Mother had survived.
He was also trying to make amends with Nesta, again, on Feyre’s request. Although he knew she wouldn’t see it that way. This wasn’t a plan to punish them. He really did want to help them improve and grow. They would be an unstoppable force one day, a huge asset to his court. They already proved fiercer than most male armies he’d fought alongside. But to get better, they had to face their mistakes.
Rhysand continued through the list, “Gwyn, excellent work luring the beast to those males. Truly inspired... But when you got shot with an arrow, you were willing to let yourself give up so easily, rather than get across the bridge? A simple tourniquet made from a ribbon or belt would have given you enough movement to get across. Basic first aid.”
Gwyn sulked. She’d been happy to let Emerie and Nesta get an earful of their mistakes, but she thought she did pretty well! Sure… maybe she was a bit stubborn at times, and that maybe that put them in some danger, but they had won! That’s all that mattered. Azriel threw her a sympathetic look as Rhys continued to list her mistakes.
“...and when Nesta said you had to leave, and you refused, all of you could have died. We need to establish ranks and you will follow your commanding officer's decisions.”
Nesta swore he gave her a pointed look with that last statement.
Rhys continued, “To be honest, no one had to stay behind. With more survival training, all of you could have made it up the last part of the mountain that day…”
“Is there a point to all of this, Rhys, or did you just jump at the chance to knock me down a peg?” Nesta interrupted, giving him a withering glare.
Cassian cleared his throat. Nesta threw him an equally judgmental stare. It had been like this since she gave the mask to Bryce a few weeks ago. They got it back, tragedy avoided! She couldn’t understand why Cassian wasn’t letting it go.
Rhysand rolled his eyes at Nesta, “What I am going to suggest is starting survival training alongside your fighting. It’s just as important. You can’t defeat your enemies if you eat a poison berry or wield your sword if you can’t stem the bleeding on a simple wound. There’s a lot to work on, but I want you all to start today on some basics.”
He looked towards his cousin and brothers, “Mor is going to run through foraging for edible plants and berries, Cassian is going to train you on weapon improvisation, and Azriel will go through how to craft a simple shelter and survival knots.”
Emerie and Nesta smirked at each other and burst out laughing. They were sure Azriel had plenty of knots he could show them.
“What’s so funny?” Gwyn asked innocently. Cassian winked at Azriel, who managed to keep his face stoic and unreadable.
“We’ll tell you later,” Nesta whispered back, glancing at Azriel before letting out another little giggle. Gwyn was so confused.
Nesta cleared her throat, composing herself to ask, “So, what time do we have to leave?”
Rhys gave her a sly grin, “Wouldn’t be survival training if you had time to prepare! You’re heading out right now.”
“What? Rhys, I can’t leave my shop unoccupied all day!” Emerie protested.
“I’m expecting to sing at the evening service tonight,” Gwyn exclaimed next.
Nesta just sat quietly and glared at Rhys. Of course, he’d pull something like this.
He held up his hands in peace, “Relax! Nuala is going to look after your shop for the day, Emerie. The Illyrians are terrified of the wraiths, so nothing will happen in your absence.” He turned to Gwyn next, “And I’ve already told Clotho you will be away for the night. She wished you all the best on your adventure.”
“What if we don’t want to go?” Nesta asked with a scowl.
Rhysand didn’t falter, “It’s for your own good. You’ll thank me one day.”
Gwyn twisted her hands in her lap with nerves. She’d hardly left the library in the last few months. The Blood Rite had knocked the confidence she had been building, but if she wanted to become a serious warrior, she should listen to her High Lord. He knew what they needed.
Emerie just sighed and accepted it.
Nesta knew from experience that fighting with Rhys and the inner circle was futile. She looked at Cassian for support, but he just stared at his precious High Lord. She should have known whose side he was going to take. She sank into her chair, her mood souring.
“You’ll spend the morning and early afternoon learning everything needed to complete a trek and overnight stay in the mountains. Use what you learn to forage for dinner, build a shelter, and survive the night. Hike back to the rendezvous point in the morning, and we’ll reconvene here to go through what you learned,” his face softened a little, “I really think this will be beneficial. Your mentors won’t let anything happen to you,” he directed his gaze at Gwyn as he said that, trying to reassure her, “but they will also offer very little help, so please make sure you spend your morning wisely. Listen to them. Ask questions. Take notes. And I look forward to seeing you all in the morning.”
Nesta just scowled in annoyance, but Emerie and Gwyn nodded in agreement, resigning to the High Lords orders.
Gwyn raised her hand. “Yes, Gwyneth?” Rhys said softly. He always used a gentle tone with her.
“Is there a prize for the winning team?” Azriel let out a chuckle from across the room. Mor whipped her head around as if she’d never heard him laugh like that before.
“Bragging rights.”
Nesta chimed in next, “So, no monetary incentive?” If she was being forced to partake, maybe she could make it worth her while.
Rhys gave her one of his charming smiles that made her want to punch him, “How about 100 gold pieces to make things interesting? The first team to make it back to the rendezvous point tomorrow morning wins.”
The Valkyries perked up, chattering excitedly amongst themselves, each confidently announcing they were winning the money. Rhys smiled in delight that the prize seemed to motivate them.
He clapped his hands to get their attention again, “Teams are Emerie and Mor, Cassian and Nesta, and Azriel and Gwyn. Packs have been made up and left at the front door,” he instructed before giving them another charming smile that made Gwyn blush. “Have a wonderful time.”
With that, they were dismissed. Everyone filed out of the office, breaking off into their teams to grab their gear.
“I want that money,” Nesta said to Cassian, who grabbed both of their packs.
Mor had hers on her back and went over to them to winnow to the mountains. “I’ll see you there, Emerie,” she said sweetly.
“Ye–kay… See you…” Emerie stammered in response. Mor disappeared with Nesta and Cassian in a flash. Emerie made a disgusted face at her fumble.
“Smooth,” Azriel said behind her. It was no secret that Emerie had a huge crush on Mor. She scowled at him as she put her own backpack on.
Gwyn reached for hers. “Let me take that for you,” Azriel offered, reaching for it at the same time.
“No, it’s fine. I can carry it,” Gwyn countered, grabbing her pack and throwing it over her shoulder.
Emerie mouthed ‘smooth’ to Azriel while Gwyn was busy looking elsewhere. He gave her the middle finger, which she mirrored.
“Okay, are we all ready?” Gwyn asked gleefully. Azriel and Emerie lowered their hands quickly and nodded.
Azriel took both of their hands, and his shadows swirled around them. Within moments, they were somewhere in the Illyrian mountains.
The sun wasn’t quite high enough to make the day warm, but by the time they started their hike, they would be sweating in the autumn heat.
“Right, Valkyries! You’re with Mor for your first lesson, Cassian commanded, and with that their training had begun. Emerie and Gwyn were feeling excited about the day ahead, but Nesta wasn’t sold yet. However, for her sisters, she’d get it over with.

Recap:
As the jovial banter continued, a group of clones stood around the window, watching the planet recede from view.
“You think She and Little One have a chance?”
“Much better than staying on Kamino.  The Nomaadi will take good care of ‘em.”
“Wish I could’a stayed on the planet with ‘em.  Kriffin tired of this rat race.”
“Miss them already...”
“Shhh...we can’t.  At least not right NOW.”
“Maybe sometime...in the future...”
“Yeah, younger ones go first.”
“Gotta be REAL careful if we smuggle any more out.”
A hush fell among the group as the planet disappeared with only cold black space remaining.
"Stranded"
Tumblr media
Far out in cold black space the Dread Beldame drifted.
After Mad had fainted and fallen to the floor, Sil turned her over. Pale and with a bruise from the fall developing on her face, he could feel the panic rising.
“Sil...breathe...” Omega had to keep him calm. “Love?”
The teen floated above the decking; eyes rolled back in their head. No answer.
Hunter had finally passed out from the horrific sensory stimuli.
Tiggy shook it off and ambled over to them whimpering. She pressed her body up against Sil to distract him.
The lights of the Beldame began to flicker.
“Sil! What’s going on? Are we losing power???”
Sil snapped to, furiously stroking Tiggy. “We lost main power after the Venator exploded.” He looked terrified. “The auxillary power is starting to fail...lights, gravity...and life support.”
Omega felt a chill go through her. “We can fix it...RIGHT???”
“No... we need another ship to hook up to the ‘Dame for recharge and repair.”
“It’ll be ok, Sil. The Marauder will be here soon!”
Sil shook his head. “Omega...the explosion pushed us parsecs away from Ord Mantell.” He got up, leaving Mad and Tiggy to check ships comm. He found them inoperable, then stared out into the blackness of space.
“I... recognize SOME of these stars. No planets or any other large landmarks. But we’ll continue to drift farther out.” He looked resigned to their fate. “Without coordinates, or a way to radio them, it’s going to be near impossible.”
“Tech and Echo WILL find us!” Omega was hopeful...but she was also scared.
The lights dimmed again and stayed at half capacity.
“It’s going to get VERY cold here soon, Omega. And we need to conserve oxygen best we can.” Sil opened a panel and pulled out insulation blankets and oxygen face masks.
Omega and Sil pulled Hunter, Mad, Love, Tiggy and each other close into a warm huddle, donned their oxygen masks, and hoped for the best.
Tumblr media
Echo and Tech furiously checked as many comm channels as possible to hail the Beldame.
Techs voice was rising, “I cannot find them on ANY channel!”
Echo was starting to worry, but couldn’t concentrate...
“You stink!” Echo wrinkled up his face. “Get in the refresher, Wrecker!!!  Pick up your armor, too.”
“Wait” interjected Tech “Who was that clone with you in the sewer tunnel?”
Echo perked up and turned around in his seat “Another clone on Ord Mantell other than Rex???”
“He called himself Riffraff.  Escaped off world after Order 66.”
Echo smiled from ear to ear, “Thank the Maker!  Vod made it.”
“You know him?” Tech inquired, still checking comm channels, trying not to panic.
“Yeah, he was a shiny I met from another unit just before joining the Batch.  Good kid, he had promise.”
“He looked SO OLD though.  Didn’t recognize him as a clone at first.” Wrecker was shocked.
“I agree with Wrecker, he must have aged to look like a first-generation clone with all the adversity he witnessed during Order 66 and after.  He said he was staying behind to gain intel for a growing rebellion.” Tech’s brow creased stressfully. “STILL cannot hail the Beldame.”
“Wrecker, shower!” Echo ordered.
“I’M GOIN’! GEEZ!!!”
“Well, I hope he accomplishes his goal.  The galaxy really needs a strong rebellion.  Maybe more of our brothers will join the fight.”  Echo looked hopeful.  “Inhibitor chips be damned.”
“I’m worried about the crew of the Beldame” Tech looked to Echo.  “Without a functioning shield they may not have escaped.”
Echo shook his head, “I REFUSE to even consider that an option.”
Tumblr media
Darkness penetrated the Beldame. A thin coating of frost covered the huddled, blanketed crew. Omega and Sil were shivering violently from the cold. Love, Mad, and Hunter were still out, but breathing and warm...for now.
Tiggy, being small and warmly nestled within the center of the group squiggled up through the bodies. She climbed up on Sil’s chest and pressed her canine head against his forehead.
He felt a strange presence in his mind. The pitter patter of little paws though his thoughts...was the best he could recall. Sil was too weak to care. Concentrating on this was better than the agony of slowly freezing to death.
“...mega?” Was the best he could muster.
“Mmm...” She was barely there. He pulled her closer, trying to keep her warm with his body heat.
How much oxygen did they have left? Even with the masks...it couldn’t last forever. Was it the low oxygen levels or the cold causing them to fight to stay awake?
Tiggy crawled away from Sil and pulled herself up to Love, who was still levitating, but tied up close to their group for warmth. She whimpered and scratched at Love’s chest. No response. She barked.
“Tiggy, leave it.” Sil tiredly commanded.
The puppy whimpered and whined...then bit Love on the chin, drawing blood.
Love’s eyes popped open with the pain response.
“Tiggy, NO!”
Omega intervened. “Sil...I think Tiggy is trying to do something.”
“What?”
“Don’t know...”
Couzin? Love’s eyes rolled back in their head.
Tiggy bit Love again. HARDER.
Love’s eye focused on the pup. Oh...can’t...too weak...
Then Tiggy MASHED her head up against Love’s. Her little tail wagging furiously. Omega and Sil watched closely.
For what, they didn’t know.
Tumblr media
Bubbles filled the refresher shower. Wrecker scrubbed away at the stink on his skin. On his third wash to finally be rid of it.
Plunging his face under the faucet a tune wound an earworm into his head.
Wrecker hadn’t turned on his holotunes, but an oddly discordant song kept repeating in his head. More like a repeating snippet of a song...with some percussion.
It became stronger. Then Wrecker started to hum...over...and over. Tapped his foot even.
He finished, dried off, dressed. Still humming the tune, tapping the percussion now with his knuckle on the bunkroom wall.
Wrecker wandered to the cockpit...
...humming...
...tapping...
Echo and Tech were backtracking coordinates, retrying comm channels, plotting hyperspace lanes...concerned for the worst.
“Like they just disappeared!” Echo furrowed his brow.
“Echo...I think we MIGHT have to entertain the idea...” Tech eyed his brother with concern.
“NO!”
...humming...
...tapping...
“I know it’s difficult to consider...Echo...”
“I WON’T accept that they may be...”
...humming...
...tapping...
Tech swung his chair around to look at Wrecker.
Wrecker was grooving along to some type of internal tune. Humming along and tapping on the Marauder’s interior wall. It wasn’t exactly musical, but Wrecker didn’t seem to mind, eyes closed, and he just kept on jamming along.
Echo took Tech’s lead and watched Wrecker for a few moments.
“WRECKER!” Echo shouted.
“WHAAAAT?”
“Why are you tapping out Basic Standard Code?”
Wrecker shrugged. “Stuck in my head...can’t stop.”
“Keep going, Wrecker.” Tech urged, rubbing his chin.
They watched Wrecker repeat the humming and tapping over and over.
Echo broke the silence, “DEFINITELY BSC! The message keeps repeating. Don’t know what the other part is...”
Tech interrupted excitedly. “Notes on the musical scale!”
Tech repeated the Basic Alphabet that corresponded with the notes to Echo.
“With the Basic Standard Code...” Echo started the sentence...
...and Tech finished it, “They’re coordinates!”
They both spun their seats around and immediately engaged the Marauder.
Wrecker stopped humming and tapping. “YOU’RE WELCOME!”

Maya le tissier fanfic part 1!
(sorry if there’s spelling mistakes Ive written most of this late at night)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
20th July 2022
BREAKING NEWS Maya Le Tissier has joined Manchester united on a 3 year deal reports say.
You turn away from your phone to your team mates who have been discussing the rumours all week and now it has finally been confirmed.
“Can’t wait to meet her” Millie Turner said from across the room.
“She was hard to get past when we played Brighton”, Leah Galton replied.
The introduction of a new player is always exciting to have, but with her it seemed different.
You watched her enter the training ground already wearing the united training kit with a big smile on her face, a smile so contagious it lit up the whole room up, and she’d been here for 5 minutes, yet it felt it as if you knew her your whole life.
The way she shook your hand to greet you and looked into your eyes as if you were an old friend that haven’t seen each other in a long time, it just felt natural.
Millie Turner must have said something funny because she laughed as she was greeting her making her head slightly tilt backwards.
You couldn’t help but smile.
“What are you smiling at?”, Nikita joked poking your side.
“Nothing” You laughed shaking your head back at her.
-
A few weeks had past and Maya fitted in straight away, she was always working hard especially in the gym.
Just before the season starts the whole team decided we should go out altogether for a meal before the hard works starts.
It was a fancy restaurant that we were not used to and half the menu seemed pointless. You happened to sit next to Maya who gave you a smile as you were sitting down.
“That suit looks good on you”. Maya said as she ran her fingers so delicately on your shoulder feeling the fabric.
“Why thank you”, You replied feeling yourself start to blush. “Your dress is beautiful”. You said slightly positioning your body towards her.
“Maya what are you going to order?”, Katie asked from across the table.
This diverted her attention off you as she turned to Katie replying she’s going to order pasta.
In them few seconds you missed having her full attention on you which made you think, is there a chance you have some feelings towards her? No that can’t be the case you barely know her, she’s been here for 3 weeks and you’re already jumping to conclusions because she complimented you once, I am really down that bad you thought to yourself slightly shaking your head.
The night went on and before you knew it, it was already 2am due to the amount of drinks that were being ordered.
By that time there was an only a small group of us left.
“Ughh i can’t believe an uber is £30 just get back to my apartment” You sighed.
“I could give you a ride?” Maya replied with a smile, as she hasn’t had much to drink. (don’t be dirty minded😉)
“Are you sure?”. You replied slurring, regretting having them shots ella convinced you to drink.
“Of course” She replied with a smile.
“Thanks”.
“No problem”. She replied slightly stroking your back.
Once you got in the car you turned to look at maya who was rubbing her arms due to the cold winter air.
“You can wear my jacket if you like”, you asked her.
“No it’s ok”, she said smiling “your apartment is only 20 minutes away”.
“Ok, if you get hypothermia don’t blame me”.
“Woww”, she said laughing slightly pushing your shoulder.
You laughed with her.
The drive to her apartment seemed quicker than you hoped as you both listened to the radio almost at full volume.
You saw Maya glance to the side of you and she noticed you didn’t look so well, your arms were now folded onto your stomach and you looked out the window slightly turning away from her.
She quickly parked up just in front of your flat. “Are you ok?”. Maya asked worriedly.
“I think i’ve drank too much”, you chuckled wiping your forehead that was slightly sweating somehow even though it was freezing outside.
“Let’s get inside then”, she said quickly getting out her car and walking round to help you.
As you were about to enter your apartment building a group of guys walked past that you were familiar with.
“Look at the state of her”, one of them remarked and then they all started laughing.
“Hey, leave her alone”, Maya replied back angrily.
“Or what?”.
“Maya it’s ok”. You exclaimed.
Maya walked back up to the guy “I’m gonna sh-”
“Maya let’s go”, You interrupted, walking inside.
Maya sighed smirking at the guy, then slowly turned to follow you.
“Do them guys bother you a lot?”, Maya asked placing an arm around your shoulder as you walked to the lift.
“Sometimes…b-but not often”, you replied avoiding eye contact with her.
“You’re welcome to stay with me if they do”, maya said as you searched for your keys in your bag.
“Thanks, but it’s ok”, you said as you walked out the lift, to your door.
“Are you sure?”, She asked.
You didn’t reply as you did want to stay with her…but for the wrong reason.

Sorry this is so short for now i will continue this if you want me to :)

TW: aftermath of an overdose, addiction, relapse, crying, panic attack, brief mention of needles, canon typical violence, Dead Dove Do Not Eat
Author's Note: The descriptions of overdose treatment in this chapter come from my best understanding of this article from the NIH. They may be inaccurate.
Summary: John and Vincent are forced to trust a civilian doctor to save Vincent's life.
Since they had united three days ago, John had been the only one to touch Vincent. He had not considered what it would feel like for someone else to do so in his place.
The doctor, a man right around John’s age who had arrived still dressed in pajamas, had insisted they open the windows and blast the AC, and frozen items from the fridge were piled around Vincent’s head. The ceiling fan hummed above them at its highest setting while the doctor leaned over Vincent to put a needle in his arm. He emitted some half-conscious whine of miserable protest and then fell silent again. An impulse rose up in John, to take a step forward, to be there for him, but he managed to restrain himself – there was nothing he could do, and the stitches had to be redone next.
Logically, he knew how outrageous it was to resent a doctor who was actively saving Vincent’s life. But he still wished it were him, wished that this, too, had been a part of his training. To stand by idly, of no use to Vincent, filled him with an ache. An ache that had already frozen his body into a tensed, motionless statue at the side of the bed with feet planted wide apart in wait for orders. An ache that felt far too familiar.
Whatever he did, he must not think about the last time this happened. The last time he waited at a bedside, unable to do anything…
“You were right to put him under cold water.” The doctor pulled him out of his reverie. “The only mistake was taking him back out. He probably overheated again immediately, and lost consciousness due to that. But it’s not a stroke.”
John finally managed to exhale. “So why is he not awake?”
“I’ve just given him a minor sedative, to prevent heart attack. Counteracts some of the effects of stimulants. But it won’t last very long. He’ll be awake again soon.” The man looked him up and down. “You, on the other hand, look more like a hypothermia than hyperthermia risk. You should warm up.”
John had stopped noticing his own shivering at some point in the shower, and since then, he had been soaked to the skin in wet clothes. “Right.”
“I can have the front office throw your shirt in the dryer. And your friend’s clothes.”
He nodded. Awkwardly, he pulled off his shirt, and the man’s eyes appraised his tattoos with thinly veiled alarm before settling on the holster at his hip. “…You know, he should really be in the hospital. It’s not worth staying on the run just to die of infection. Did you ever tell me how he got shot?”
“No.” He held out the balled-up shirt and let the sounds of rain stretch uninterrupted between them.
The man took it gingerly, staring at John’s face, still littered with cuts from the car crash. “I can also look at – “
“No. Thank you.”
He finally had the good sense to leave the room.
So John wrapped the comforter around himself and sank into the armchair, gazing intently at Vincent. He managed to look even more bedraggled than he had when John carried him over the threshold that first night. He was extremely pale, with dark shadows under his eyes from so many days of insomnia, and his wet hair clinging to his forehead. There was that horrible ache again. The way it tugged at John’s heart was almost literal, a pang through the chest. Vincent may be a terror, but John had decided that, given the choice between the sleeping angel on his deathbed and the waking demon full of life, he’d take the demon every time.
Before long, Vincent was stirring feverishly. John went to his side before he knew what he was doing, leaning over him, the comforter falling to the floor in a heap. “Hey. How do you feel?”
His eyes opened halfway, and he pawed at John’s hand. “Like everything is dragging behind itself,” he slurred. “Water, please.”
John hurried to obey, and by the time he turned back, Vincent wore an entirely different expression. His eyes wandered languidly over John’s chest and shoulders, starstruck. In a small, hoarse voice, “The Ruska Roma has a good tattoo artist.” He sipped the water in the manner of a fine wine and licked his lips.
“Really, Vincent? This is not the time.” But he was grinning in relief. Clearly the Marquis was getting back to his old self. “…I’m glad you’re okay. Doc said there’s no permanent damage. But you could have died.”
“You saved me,” he said, with a smug little grin. God, he was adorable.
“Don’t do it ever again.”
“I’m sorry.” Something about the speed with which he said it and the way his grin suddenly faltered betrayed hidden depths of shame. “That’s easier said than done, Mr. Wick,” he said defensively.
“I’m not angry with you. I was worried. I want - ” This could really piss him off if he wasn’t ready to hear it. But it was worth the risk. John gathered himself and finished the sentence. “I want to get you help, if you’re willing.”
Vincent looked away and released a labored sigh, somewhere between pain and ecstasy. “I have never had someone worry over me for that. But now that I do…I would like to get better, I think.”
John glowed with pride. “When this is all over, we’ll – “
The door opened. Vincent turned towards the doctor, his affectionate side vanishing in an instant, replaced by something curious and cunning. Even looking up from the bed, he managed to look down his nose at this stranger who had intruded on their private moment. “Voici donc le médecin que vous m'avez trouvé. [So this is the doctor you found for me],” he said, speaking to John without breaking eye contact with the doctor. “Peut-on lui faire confiance? [Can he be trusted?]”
“Il faut l'espérer. [We have to hope so.]”
“Does he speak English?” the man asked John. He looked extremely hesitant to talk to Vincent.
Vincent’s glare could have killed. “Yes. Explain to me why my…assistant has no shirt in this very cold room.”
My assistant. What were they to each other? It was just occurring to John that he could not possibly explain that to anyone.
“Your clothes are being dried.” The man frowned. “I need to ask you both some questions.”
John didn’t like where this was going. He liked the look of mirth in Vincent’s eyes even less. He was getting ready to toy with this man, and that could only end badly. “Marjorie said you didn’t ask questions.”
“Ordinarily, I don’t. But in this case…” His eyes were lingering on John’s holster again. “If it’s alright, I just want to ask your friend about his medical history. Uh, or your…boss?”
“Something like that.” John made a point of handing the gun to Vincent and locked himself in the bathroom.
A minute or two later, laughter filtered through the wall, ending in a fit of strained wheezing as it disturbed Vincent’s stitches. “You can come out,” he called. “This idiot thought you kidnapped me. Ah, that’s too much.”
John gave an apologetic half smile to the doctor. “I appreciate the concern, but I think we’re done here, unless he needs anything else medical.”
“No, we’re not done here.” Vincent leveled the gun at the man, snapping from mirthful to joyfully vindictive in an instant. The man held both hands above his head, shaking. Dog growled, turning from one to the other, unsure what was going on.
“Hey. What are you doing? He just saved your life.”
“He also called the police on us.” Vincent was laughing again, now a low chuckle that said it-just-about-figures.
“What!?” Damn it.
“I – I didn’t mean – “ He was stuttering in confusion. “Look, Marjorie is too lenient when it comes to these things. You need to get to a hospital. It’s better to face your trial and get medical attention than to keep running, especially if you’re in some kind of hostage situation. Please don’t make your sentence any worse. If you kill me it’s just…it won’t help anything.”
Vincent smiled bitterly, and dragged himself up from the bed with as much dignity as he could manage while dressed in nothing but underwear and gauze. He swayed on his feet for a moment, still struggling with blood flow after that ordeal, but maintained his hold on the gun. “Jo- er, assistant, please get out your phone and search for news on wanted persons in the New York tristate area. And Pennsylvania.”
He did, and saw Vincent’s photo staring back at him. “Jean Felix, wanted for first degree murder. Potentially held hostage by another suspect, likely accompanied by a grey bulldog…no photo of me, I guess Winston must have talked them out of that one too.”
“Did they specify a method?” Vincent asked casually, now strolling right up to the doctor to press the gun flush against his forehead. “I hope they said axe. That would be…colorful. I’ve always wanted to try my hand with an axe.”
“What the hell is going on?” The doctor asked desperately, unable to avoid Vincent’s livid eye contact. “Are you saying you were framed?”
“Oh, now you ask? I thought you knew all about it yourself. Going to be the hero of the day, weren’t you? The nervous, twitchy little hero of the day, sticking your nose into other people’s business.”
“Let’s just – “ But John was too late. Vincent turned the gun sideways, and bashed it across the man’s face, breaking his nose in a shower of blood. The man doubled over screaming wildly, as Dog set off in a fury of barking.
Vincent, meanwhile, was collapsing against the wall, having overexerted himself. John ran to him, pulling him upright.
“Shit!” Still supporting Vincent, he turned to the doctor. “You should leave.”
He didn’t need telling twice.
Vincent lolled against him, spent rage giving way to fear and frustration. He chuckled weakly. “This is what happens when you trust people, John.”
“You survive. You would have died otherwise.”
“As if I won’t now, thanks to that rat!”
“No you won’t. I will keep you alive.”
As if to contradict him, both their phones lit up at the same time, first with one notification and then with a second. Vincent lurched towards the nightstand, trying to grab his. John’s arms around his waist kept him from falling. “Let go of me!”
Unwilling to touch him without his say-so, even for his own good, John lowered him to the floor. “I’ll bring it to you. But we already know what it is.”
He took a deep breath and handed Vincent his business phone – the source of endless trouble. He looked down needlessly at his own. Contract Update for Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont: Target cited at Blue Moon Motel, 206 Golden Key Rd, Kutztown, PA 19530. And then: Contract for John Wick: $20 Million. Open. International. Target cited at Blue Moon Motel, 206 Golden Key Rd, Kutztown, PA 19530.
Vincent was in the fetal position.
John went to his knees beside him. “Regardez-moi. Nous allons régler le problème. [Look at me. We’ll sort it out.]” He did his best to hide his own dwindling confidence. Vincent’s heart couldn’t take any more right now.
“Tu as tellement de chance que je ne l'ai pas tué. [You’re so lucky I didn’t kill him.]”
“Je sais. Mais nous n’avons pas le temps. Il faut qu'on bouge, d'accord? Puis-je vous aider? [I know. But there’s no time. We need to move, okay? Can I help you up?]”
Vincent turned his face away for a moment, screamed wordlessly into the carpet, and then turned back to John. “Oui. Bien. Tout va bien. [Yes. Fine. Everything’s fine.]”
John pulled him against his chest crushingly for a moment, before standing. “Oui. Tout va bien. [Yes. Everything’s fine],” he echoed.
Forcing down waves of emotion, he glanced around at the disarray surrounding them. “Let’s go. Grab anything important and put your shoes on. I’ll get the duffle bag.”
Another flight through the rain and they stumbled into the front lobby, John supporting Vincent on one arm, wrapped in a towel, and carrying the bag on the other.
“Oh my lord, what happened to you boys? And I just saw Mr. Elliot drive off too.”
“We’d like to check out. We’ll just take our clothes, if that’s okay Marjorie. I’m so sorry, genuinely. You’ve been very good to us.”
“Don’t tell me he called the cops, he promised me…”
“Yeah.” John sighed. “Listen, I know this is sudden, but…I’d like to buy your car.”
She sighed right back, eyeing his gun. “Don’t suppose I have a choice in the matter. Well, it’s an old junker anyway. The check engine light never turns off, and the brakes are starting to go. Okay if I clear out the glove compartment? I’ve got photos of the grandkids.”
John nodded.
When she got back, he ran his card for $20,000.
