hi ames! about the latest posts that touch on sysba's aromanticism - how that ties to them being a RO and having a romance path in the game? i'm a little confused to be honest. since aro people don't experience romantic attraction or interest in romantic relationships. /gen

Not all aro people experience no romantic attraction! Like any other sexuality/preference, aromanticism is a spectrum and thus people can experience different things. In Sysbas case, they don't not experience romantic attraction, but they experience it very little—as explained in the prior post. Sysba has had 'romantic' affairs (re Malchus) but they're highly infrequent and they prefer more physically intimate encounters. Sysba, therefore, is more gray-aromantic, or greyromantic, which still falls under the aromantic umbrella.

In complete honesty, I've always been transparent with the reader base about how Sysbas route will be minimal in terms of actual romantic stuff (re holding hands, dates, etc) so this is definitely not a new development. This is also because I need to take into consideration the fact that Sysba is NOT human, and thus does not experience the same emotions/spectrum of emotions we, as humans, do. Sysba's species and personal history dictates an entirely different emotional path.

Sysba still enjoys the company of others, even if the emotional component is different than what people usually expect in these games, and so I still feel that they can work as an RO. It may not be everyones cup of tea, but I feel comfortable with the vision I have in mind for them, and confident that I can make it work!

Hi! Thank you for the well wishes and the ask. I am so sorry it took a while for me to respond. I wanted to add little summaries to the recommendations so you can jump straight into the ones that might interest you.

XLeon

Luckily XLeon is such a small ship that it's pretty easy to recommend fics.

Windows to the Soul is a really lovely fic, probably the one that got me into the ship. It follows a good portion of the RE2 remake story quite closely, but with the twist that Mr. X is trying to win over Leon even though Leon fears for his life for a good portion of it lol.

Captivated is a cute AU fic where Leon's father is an Umbrella researcher who has our favorite tyrant act as Leon's bodyguard (much to Leon's dismay) while the lead up to RE1 events happen in the background.

Blind Man's Gamble is a very sweet fic about Leon accidentally getting chemically blinded while searching for supplies in the RPD and Mr. X finds him and takes it upon himself to help the very perplexed officer. This author also has a lot of other very sweet fics about XLeon, so I definitely recommend them too if you enjoy softer stories about the ship.

I have so many Chrisker fics I enjoy that it's hard to know what to recommend, especially since my tastes for that ship tend to be smutty and dark. However, I will start with a couple of nicer(?) ones and go towards dark at the end of the list.

The Endless Realities A sweet series of oneshots about Chris and Wesker being in love in different AUs/canon divergent plots.

A God Needs Worship If you enjoy long fics, this one is for you. It's mostly about Chris and Wesker's evolving relationship leading up to the events of RE1 (and will be getting into the events of the game itself). It's actually some very good slice-of-life showing their S.T.A.R.S. work, Wesker's relationship with Umbrella and relationships with colleagues/friends/family/enemies. All around a very good fic with a lovely balance of plot/romance/character growth/etc.

Love Crime A really sweet fic where Chris offers to take Barry's place as Wesker's pawn in betraying S.T.A.R.S. The ending was a surprise, but I enjoyed it all very thoroughly.

The Courting This is pretty different from most of the Chrisker fics I read. It's an Incredibly funny fic where S.T.A.R.S. era Chris tries to flirt with Wesker by pranking him and Wesker usually gets sweet revenge. I also thoroughly enjoyed the next part (Encounters) of the series, but it is very smutty. I am not done with the series of fics that that this is attached to, but the parts I have read have been incredibly enjoyable. However, the series as a whole is not comedy and contains some dark and/or sad moments.

Mistakes Chris comes on to Wesker, Wesker falls for Chris (much to his dismay). Wesker tries to stay in control of everything despite probably not being very in control at all and begins to plot Umbrella's downfall so he can keep Chris at his side.

Sins of the Flesh is a beautiful fic where Wesker resurrects Chris after killing him some years prior in a need for proper revenge, but keeps Chris alive after realizing that Chris cannot remember his own death or his antagonistic relationship with Wesker. This fic is very dreamy and sad, be prepared to cry. I also recommend the author's fics The Hound and Manifest Retribution, but they are very sexually charged and not exactly in a nice way.

Happy Adversary, Christopher A very funny Valentine's Day fic (by the same author as the previous fic rec) where Wesker forces a date on Chris after kidnapping him. It's actually quite sweet.

Ten-Million-Dollar Mutt MIND THE TAGS PLEASE. A gift to me! (and another one by the same author as the previous two) Wesker buys Chris in an auction after Chris has been virally enhanced to have doglike characteristics. Incredibly smutty with VERY hardcore kinks (some were quite the surprise to me too, but San is very good at making them palatable). However if you can handle it, it's actually quite a funny (and sexy) read that starts to veer towards being sweet in some of the newest chapters. A surprising amount of character growth on Wesker's part imo.

Can and Will Be Held Against You. This story sometimes makes my brain feel like it's melting (and I do mean this in a good way). Wesker is very manipulative with Chris and molds him into his perfect pet. It's a disturbing co-dependent relationship that doesn't exactly feel like love. However, there is a very cathartic moment where Wesker gets what he deserves. Interesting story all around.

I could probably go on, but I think this is enough for now ^^; so sorry to throw so many at you, but hopefully there are a few you enjoy! Also you have probably long fallen asleep by now, but perhaps some of these will be good bedtime stories for other nights.

Life Series winners as primal sources from the Dragon Prince

I made a post about this back when Limited Life finished but I’m revisiting the concept because I love it (this is all inspired by the wiki)

This is a touch long so buckle up :)

For this unfamiliar with TDP, it’s a Netflix show by a lot of the same people as Avatar the Last Airbender, it’s very neat and you should check it out. There are seven sources of magic in this universe: the six primal sources (sun, moon, stars, sky, earth, and ocean) and dark magic (which harvests and uses energy from magical creatures)

Grian as The Sun

Sun magic is known for its dual nature: light and growth vs fire and destruction. Either warm enough to comfort or hot enough to burn, the Sun and those who practice it’s magic are associated with truth, fury, intensity, charisma, and leadership. The solar arcanum has to do with strong positive energy, but also manifests in anger, fear and grief. Despite its focus on hope and healing, the Sun is also highly destructive and requires careful control of one’s emotions and impulses.

Grian is a bright figure, often at the center of the life series due to his contagious energy and unpredictability. It is due to his ability and desire to bring people together that destruction follows him. He seeks to entertain — to bring joy — but tends to do so in a way that is either careless or impulsive and often results in pain or loss. His warmth draws people in just in time for his lack of control to burn them. This is why — despite being seen as a friend and even a leader to other players — Grian always ends up alone.

Scott as The Stars

The Stars are the rarest and most powerful source of magic. Very little is known about it, but the Stars and those who practice it’s magic are associated with wisdom, destiny, dedication, reality, vision, and eternity. The most mysterious of sources, Star magic is said to be vast and timeless. Practitioners of the Stars’ arcanum have said it to be brighter and more beautiful than anything else in the universe, but unconcerned with the mortal world and even cruel. The Stars have power over time and space, unfathomable in their reach and strength.

Scott is frequently hailed as the biggest threat in any given season. His strategies evade substantial analysis, but his biggest trademark is maintaining loose but amicable connections with everyone around him. No one wants to get on his bad side, not only because of his strength, but because of his likability. Intelligent and charming, Scott manages to get through majority of each game without any real enemies, keeping his distance and avoiding being seen as a threat. Scott is bright, both in intelligence and in atmosphere. He is everywhere and nowhere, constant yet unnoticed. He’s above the petty fighting of the other players, but whenever he enters the fray he is the most feared unknown on the field.

Pearl as The Moon

Those connected to the Moon primal are private and secretive creatures. It is associated with manipulation, duality, depth, love, and death. The Moon arcanum largely focuses on the relationship between appearance and reality, understanding that appearance is a part of reality and that we can only ever perceived the appearance of reality. Truth and illusions are central concepts in the practice of lunar magic, and those who practice it are often misunderstood, dismissed as mad, or isolated. The Moon has a penchant for trickery, often playing with the line between truth and lies or life and death.

Pearl has always been a person who loves very deeply, but frequently finds herself alone. While she very much values a certain level of privacy, she also craves companionship. Pearl is extremely intuitive and pays attention to her surroundings, not hesitating to take new angles or look at something or someone from a new perspective. But in her intelligence comes something difficult to convey, her fluidity can cause her to be perceived as fickle. She is often in smaller groups or even alone, as people who don’t understand her may be inclined to distrust her. Pearl is often seen as wild or unpredictable due to a combination of her more withdrawn nature and her straddling the line of truth and lies, of life and death. Her mischievousness, intelligence, and independence can intimidate others, but Pearl is a steadfast and loyal ally, misunderstood as she often is.

Martyn as The Ocean

The Ocean is dynamic and forceful. It is associated with transformation, adaptability, navigation, depth, and awareness. Those who practice the Ocean primal tend to form strong connections to others, but they also have hidden depths. Gentle on the surface with great strength beneath, they may be stronger than even they know. The Ocean arcanum is about letting go of your need for control and finding the constant amidst constant change.

Martyn had been a classic team player, often making a place for himself right beside a force to be reckoned with. He was loyal, ready and willing to live, fight, and die for another. But he is also fluid, flexible in his role. Martyn is content staying on the sidelines when that is what serves him best, but he also has a fighting spirit that historically gets overlooked. He is powerful. He forms strong relationships, but has also learned when to stay and when to let go. He has paid attention, learning the game, and now it is his time to strike. His whole story is about the battle for freedom, but it is also about finding how to live within that space. He still pushes at the walls of his cage, unrelenting in his fight to find a way out, but he simultaneously refuses to let his circumstances dictate his story.

Scar as The Earth

The Earth arcanum emphasizes resilience, patience, history, and stubbornness. Those connected to the Earth primal care deeply about the world around them and it’s story. They are patient and strong, focusing on growth and fortitude. Those who practice the Earth primal value balance and harmony, seeking interdependent and mutually beneficial relationships with everyone and everything around them.

Scar’s story is one of growth. From the first person to ever die in this series to the only winner to make it out alive, Scar’s victory is a testament to his dedication and diligence. He has worked steadily to improve with no basis of comparison but himself, patient and steadfast, uncaring if anyone takes notice. He’s stubborn, even when no one believes in his abilities — including himself — he doesn’t give up, putting in his all regardless. He doesn’t expect success, but he achieves it regardless. Scar has never been out to rewrite history, but he carves a brand new story in stone all on his own.

Hi! I agree with pretty much everything you wrote about in the post for Rookie-ask game. Would you be interested in expanding on your thoughts? I know you said you wanted to keep it brief to avoid hate, but I think it would be great to get more diverse opinions in this fandom and I think you would have support for starting a discussion.

Lucy was my favorite character from the start and I am disappointed with her character growth in season 5 (it felt non-existent). As well as how she is viewed by many in this fandom as either a flawless badass who can do no wrong (and in extension no need for character growth) or as not confident, desperate for validation and with no self-awareness. There are definitely people who have a more nuanced view too and I really appreciated their perspective . But for example a majority of fics are written from Tim´s perspective and like you say it feels like in a lot of them Lucy is written as very passive. There is definitely very much an emphasis on Tim´s perspective in both the show, fics and here on tumblr. I am very glad he is explored as a nuanced character, but I wish Lucy would also get that.

I would be really interested in hearing your thoughts, but I would also completely understand if you do not feel like posting them.

If anyone knows me, they know I love to talk. My thoughts and tangents are scattered far and wide, incoherent and half-finished ramblings all over the place. So, I'll do my best, because... Damn it, you're not wrong. I think every fandom should host a diversity of feelings, thoughts, and passionate (but polite) discourse.

I'm not sure *exactly* which thoughts you want me to expand on (and I'm very curious about what falls outside of the "pretty much everything" you agree with), but I'll build on what you mention in your ask - Lucy is also my favourite character and she was followed closely by Nyla when she came on the scene in S2. I probably hew closer to the "flawless badass who can do no wrong" read of Lucy than I'd like, but I think there are canonical things for her to work on: she can be impulsive (confronting Tim outside of Isabel's home, adopting Kojo, giving Tamara her car), she has a petty streak (getting revenge on Tim, asking out the paramedic after Emmett dumps her), she has a tendency toward self-preservation that can make her selfish (asking about sacrificing the fugitive gang member, asking Nolan to lie to cover up their affair), and she is fueled by righteous anger that can lead her to do dumb things (threatening the dickhead who kicked sand at his dog, nearly threatening Stanton, yelling at Chris when she first met him).

In S4 and S5 (but especially S4, and actually, even a little in S3), Lucy displays a lot of immaturity that I don't think was as apparent in S1 or S2 where she typically displays better judgement than Jackson and a more realistic perspective than Nolan. It was frustrating to watch a character that seemed to know herself fairly well and was so open to confrontation and growth become a character who was jealous of a rookie and seemed to bounce back and forth emotionally in all of her relationships (romantic and otherwise) until Tim pointed it out and provoked her into action. For someone whose superpower is empathy (and oh gag at the idea that all cops have a superpower), she displayed a startling lack of self-awareness in S4 and S5 and I just... I don't know. The entire show changed *a lot* in S4 in ways that were monumentally disappointing for me, but none so much as the way the women on the show suffered in terms of character development.

I could honestly talk about this for hours, use thousands of words to proselytize at length, but S4 was a season that I so deeply dislike that I don't think I've purposely rewatched a single episode. Maybe I've missed nuances or missed plot points that, on rewatch, would've played better, but I don't think so. I think I (and many friends) have a fundamentally different perspective on the show as a direct consequence of S4 and part of it is the perceived character assassination (across the board, mind you, but especially) of the women on the show.

For context, I would like to point out that we spent two episodes with Emmett (go look at the epic beautiful gifset by @hotshotchen but we spent, by contrast, 13 episodes with Chris. In that time, we see Lucy meet and engage willingly and flirtatiously with Emmett, him express interest without any subterfuge or third party prodding and them actually having fun (in bed the morning after, but whatever!) together, him messing up and apologizing, and Lucy accepting it and moving forward with him... With Chris, Tim sets them up, their differences are expounded upon with Lucy consistently suggesting in words and actions that she's not that into him, Chris messing up repeatedly and there being no closure around it, and then Tim breaking them up. We got more character growth and better storytelling in two episodes of Emmett than we did in 13 episodes of Chris. While Tim was relevant to Lucy and Emmett's relationship, their relationship was not about him nor was he directly involved. It was about Lucy. What was her relationship with Chris about? Yeah, I don't know either, but somehow I don't think the answer is Lucy.

Earlier, I made an untagged post on my main about Noah's character after chapter 5 and the beginning of 6, and was surprised it got a few likes and reblogs from people who don't follow me. If there's actually demand for Noah character analysis I can do much better, so here's a longer analysis of Noah's story up to the beginning of chapter 6!

Spoilers below the cut, obviously. Also, please note that I haven't played much more than the beginning of chapter 6, so please no spoilers for the rest of the game!

In my original post, I said that Noah has the potential to be a selfish person. Here I'll take it one step further and say that Noah is a selfish person, it's literally his fatal flaw in N's case. He would rather give in and stop fighting for a better world to accept the world as it is if he can live a comfortable life with M, even if it means hurting other people and M herself. This is what Z calls the endless now.

Like N, Noah hates to fight, it's his natural instinct to avoid fighting, to surrender to the path of least resistance. The first time you really see this flaw is during the flashback where he got lucky seven from Riku. Noah lies to others about not being able to summon his weapons to avoid fighting. Riku calls Noah out by accusing him of wanting his friends to die, the natural outcome of rolling over and accepting what's coming at them rather than fighting back. Even after Riku gives Noah lucky seven, he still refuses to draw it in battle, he's letting it sit in its scabbard, not fighting with the full extent of his power.

The first time Noah uses lucky seven, to cut colony 4's flame clock, is a deeply significant moment for Noah's character. It represents the first time Noah's truly chosen to fight back. I don't think it's a coincidence that Noah uses it to destroy the flame clocks. Clocks display the present, the now, by destroying one with lucky seven Noah is metaphorically cleaving through the endless now, choosing to fight over rolling over and accepting Moebius's present.

Even after this moment, and after Noah starts to use lucky seven to cut through other colonies flame clocks, he's not really giving it his all. If he uses lucky seven, it's just briefly pulling it from its scabbard for an attack or to slice a clock. It's an improvement over not using it at all, but it shows that Noah is still holding back.

Another aspect of Noah's character that indicates his selfish nature is his relationship with death. Noah says that the reason he became an offseer was because he had to know the meaning of the smile he had seen on multiple people as they died. Noah thinks it's a smile of pity, because they get to move on, to leave behind the violence and chaos of the world and stop fighting, while he and everyone else are left behind living. Noah's desire to not have to fight anymore is so strong that he can't help but project it onto Crys, onto Joran, completely missing the real point of their smiles.

Both of these negative traits of Noah's born from his selfish desire to take an easy way out of fighting come to a head at castle Agnus. Noah makes the choice to fight and entrust the future to the ouroboros candidates if they don't make it, a decision that really shows his growth up to that point, but he still won't give it his all. He still won't wield lucky seven to its fullest potential, he still holds back in battle. And for that, he loses to N. The party are imprisoned, can no longer summon their blades, and Noah tries with all his physical strength to break out of the prison. But he doesn't once try to call on lucky seven, something Riku points out on the day of the execution. Noah's lack of conviction to fight, his refusal to truly give his all, is what results in Mio's (or rather, M's) death.

Only after her death and smile does Noah realize what the smile really meant. He finally realizes that it's not pity, it's them pinning their hopes, their dreams for the future on him. In this moment, Noah is once again offered the choice, to give into the endless now, as he's been doing on some level the entire story, or to draw his blade and fight. And, for the first time in the game Noah chooses with all his conviction to fight. He quite literally draws his blade and uses it to cut a better future instead of the endless now.

Noah is the last main party member to truly find their conviction, the entire story up to this point has focused on the rest of the party finding their own reasons to fight. But when he does, it allows him to become far greater than N. For the first time Noah is fighting with all his strength for a world better than the endless now that has tempted him for so long.

My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at Lv. 999

!!SPOILER WARNING!!

My favorite genre of anime will always be the shoujo genre. Being a hopeless romantic, I love seeing all the different love stories there can be. Especially lately with a lot of stories coming out focused on characters who embrace nerdiness. This anime fits beautifully into that trend as of late. The story follows Akane who gets broken up with and later, after a turn of events, meets Yamada who is a well-known streamer. It also turns out that Akane and Yamada happen to be a part of the same guild in an online game, and from there their relationship grows. Not only are our main characters interesting, but all the other characters too. I loved each of the guild members. Though I will admit, at first I was despising Runa…but she grew on me eventually. Each episode keeps you interested and is full of both humor and heartwarming moments. We get to see Akane recovering from her break-up and finding confidence in herself within the guild. As well as seeing Yamada and her slowly grow in affection. I especially appreciated getting a look from Yamada’s side as his feelings grew. Most shoujo we get a really good look at the female lead's feelings, but only bits and pieces from the male lead. In this anime I felt like we got to see the full growth from both sides of the relationship. The animation of this show was also very pretty and I liked how it shifted slightly between being in the online game and in the characters' real lives. Overall, I thought this anime was great. I’ve already picked up the manga to see what these characters get up to next, and I can only hope that it can be renewed for another season soon.

Well I'm going start by the negative parts.

Buck and Eddie as usual... You know what I don't I even need to comment on that. I'm disappointed, but I expected it would be that way. I stopped fooling myself believing Buddie would happen while KR is in charge, so thankfully it was wise of me to not get my expectations high over this and the couch theory.

Also I honestly didn't think we need a whole block for the baby birth, anyway, before I forget, Connor sucks. Bro literally was childish and managed to not be present in his kid's birth while the bio donor and a complete stranger had to deliver that baby. Kameron girl, I don't know you (and I don't want to know), but you can find a man better than this.

I can sense this is not over and we will see more of it in the next season and I'm not happy about it.

Now LET'S TALK ABOUT THE GOODS AIN'T WE?

Let's start by saying I do love the entirety of the bridge collapse sequence, and I was so tense (even knowing everyone would be fine) that I will need to rewatch again to catch majority of the callbacks and parallels. Heck it's probably my favorite emergency of the show.

You guys, already know my opinion on the "leading because everyone is incapacitated" tho, so I don't think I need to go further on that.

CAN WE TALK about how Hen (the brain of this team) got a concussion and Bobby (the spine cord of this team) got incapacitated??? Because I definitely thought this was interesting. I still have to think about the Eddie and Chimney ones (hence why I said i need to rewatch)

Loved the heart of a champion guy being an essencial part of how Bobby got rescued. Also I love Athena being the one to find him. Loved the little chat Athena and Maddie had in the hospital (the episode was going so fine until here).

Also I must say I'm interested in how they will proceed in S7, specially considering they did set up some possible storylines here too (most likely fault of thinking the series was ending so they let an open ended line). We have a new Henren adoption arc possibly?. Madney's marriage and maybe, maybe ABC will open S7 with a cruise disaster (PLS let them enjoy a bit to say the least)

General thoughts on the season.

Not the greatest season specially considering they did run that expecting it to be the last season.

Buck's character was a mess, Eddie was underused, and the other characters all had individual storylines that even if delivering in momentum felt without conclusion, because they have no consequence.

Athena solved a case that bothered her for years and we never heard about it again. Karen's almost death was only to show the relationship start. Buck was the only one allowed to have a consequencial reflection in his traumas, but then they turned into a romantic storyline. The Wendel death for Bobby was out of nowhere but at least had some comments outside the episode, what is a miracle, considering the direction, but it still could have been more. Chimney and Maddie's, the one people complained it was dragged was literally the only one which it had the best conclusion and it worked their traumas and growth better.

This season had mometanium ups that had no consequence, followed by downs that impact more due it's repetition. The only thing I definitely can't complain was the firefam dynamic playing in this season, it was perfect.

Hope ABC give 911 an opportunity to step it's game. Because both the fans, cast and crew deserve it.

+ Overall, the cast, at least for the first two chapters, is pretty solid and I like their dynamics. They're all pretty well-written and nobody feels flat + I like how this game utilizes the Neo World Program as more than just a setting, but integrates its mechanics into the plot as well + The decision to reveal Mikado as the mastermind from the very beginning was a good one, allowing us to get to know him as this theatrical villain through the whole game + Having essentially four traitors in the group was also an interesting idea and changed up the dynamic + The character drama concerning Sora and Yuki, especially in Chapter 5, is really well done, especially with how it connects back to the first game + I really enjoyed Hibiki's character growth in the first half of the game + Sora and Yoruko's relationship is fantastic + Having the characters from Chapter 6.5 of DRA really feels like it has a nice bit of continuity to things

-Even if it had some different elements, I personally would've enjoyed it better if the Another games didn't keep following up the canon ones with the exact same setting ideas, going from Hope's Peak to an island -The game doesn't have a solid theme. It's supposed to be about Progress vs. Result, but this is only apparent through dialogue, rather than made clear through the actual narrative and events of the story. Actually trying to follow the story's events to find a cohesive theme will just leave you floundering. -Most of the cast unfortunately feels superfluous, as the story is mostly centered on the Voids and Utsuro. Hibiki sadly gets the worst of it there, where her story feels less like a tragedy and more like a meaningless death for the sake of having a shocking twist -Chapters 3, 4, and 6 are very weak compared to the rest of the game. One is almost completely irrelevant to the actual story, one was rewritten to avoid being too similar to another fangan and one is stuffed to the gills with exposition and infodumps because of the latter two. - Kanade. She's overrated, poorly-written shock bait, and the more you go back and re-experience the story of SDRA2, the more you can see how pointless she really is as a character. She either shouldn't be there at all or Chapter 3 should've been rewritten to actually have her expose one of the Voids. That might actually convince me that she's supposed to be smart -While I understand why it happens, a lot of the characters get far too mean, bitter, argumentative or villainous for me to get invested. Iroha is basically useless, does nothing but cry and whine and depend on others, and yet survives to the end without a drop of character development. Kokoro honestly gets the worst of it in Chapter 0, to the point that it feels borderline ableist to me. -The Sixth Trial feels like it veers off too much into "Yes, but" territory, where we constantly cycle between problem and solution, and it gets really repetitive. Having Sora win thanks to having Divine Luck at least doesn't feel like too much of a cop out, given that it's literally the focal point of the story, but it still felt like things were drawn out too long and there was too little foreshadowing on a lot of elements for them not to feel like they came out of left field. -LINUJ's weird insistence with undercutting the emotional core of many of the characters' arcs, which you can see especially in the character profiles and blog posts. It feels like a bad cast of telling and not showing, where he tells us that we shouldn't feel sympathy for people like the Voids, that people like Syobai never change and that Kanade's entire personality revolves around her sister. All of it undermines the actual story if you read them. -Sora keeps sisterzoning Yoruko and I have no idea why

i'm curious what you think of one of the criticisms i've seen from mainly game fans that they think joel and ellie's relationship development is rushed because we don't have enough time with them. i don't agree at all, and i think this started from ep 4 bc some game fans thought it was "too early" for joel to soften up already with her. but i think they forget that a) these are different versions of joel and ellie and 2) we spend 20+ hours of following just them in the game. we can't do that here, even though i would never say no to that. and if you think about it, in the game they hard cut to months/seasons ahead multiple times and most of the time and bonding that they spend together also happens off screen for them. i'm watching this show with my sister who doesn't know the story and hasn't played the game and she is just as fully invested in joel and ellie and hasn't had any complaints about it feeling rushed, so i think it may just be a game audience vs general audience thing.

I haven’t felt it as being rushed. I think one reason being is that Joel isn’t *as* stoic in the show as he is in game. Like you said, these are different versions of them. Game Joel is still a very broken man, yes, but show is so…vulnerable. significantly more than game Joel. And I think that’s why it might seem rushed. But with show Joel being more vulnerable, that seems to have made it easier for Ellie to get past his walls and for him to open up earlier. Those little moments (seatbelt, their giggles, showing her how to grip her gun better, etc) would NOT have happened in game. Game Joel wouldn’t have done any of those, especially so early on in their journey. It’s just something about his very present vulnerability and brokenness that is so out there in the show canon that changes who he is as a man and his connections, especially to Ellie and how she reminds him of Sarah. I think people are very stuck in them wanting both Joel’s to be the exact same, I was hoping for it too with how much I love game joel, but that’s just not the case. It’s important to understand how they’ve taken his character, and how he still makes sense AS the character of Joel Miller in both canons, and made some changes and expansions to his character

I just hit massive brain fog with this question I’m sorry 😭 but yeah, the people complaining I just don’t think can, or maybe they don’t want, to wrap theirs heads around these changes of characters. It has not felt rushed to me. Regarding the character of Joel and Ellie within the show, their growth in the show makes a lot of sense and has flowed well and fits to the timeline. My thoughts:

Characters/Character Development: 3/5

Lane: Lane is a 20-year-old character that I imagine you either love or hate; I happen to love him. He is absurdly charming, with about no people skills and the charisma to make up for it. He is autistic-coded, and the best part about him is that no one ever asks him or wants him to change. His own character arc is unrelated to any shortcomings of his own, instead following the tense relationship between himself and his parents.

Jared: Jared is a hardened 32-year-old who has seen the ugly side of hockey and is learning to live with it. He’s slightly grouchy and generally rough around the edges, except when it comes to Lane. His character arc revolves around self-acceptance and a difficult family.

Overall, the character development is… okay. We see some changes in the characters, but not much. Lane’s own arc is mostly glossed over and left to the background, and it doesn’t really involve any personal growth as opposed to the growth of the people around him. Jared’s own changes are so incredibly internal that at times it is hard to believe anything is actually influencing them. However, the characters themselves (both main and side) all have very solidly fleshed out personalities that are easy to distinguish and charming. At times, they can be a bit of caricatures, but they are still decently developed.

Believability (Hockey): 5/5

This book specifically follows the ECHL, with accurate depictions of what that means for the characters. The team names themselves are fake, but the structure of the games and league is very real. I can’t exactly say what an ECHL locker room really looks like, nor can I speak on the true personalities on and off the ice of players, but I imagine it could be pretty close to this. Is it a little idealized? Sure. But this is fiction, and I think it’s okay to make things a little better than they probably would be, so long as it’s near the realm of believability.

Believability (Plot): 2/5

This plot is enjoyable, but I didn’t quite believe it. We basically follow two rival teams, yet I’ve been to high school football games with more animosity. I adore happy endings in my romance books, as I’m sure we all do, but I think that anywhere in a book it is important for characters to struggle, and you don’t see much of that here. Additionally, we’ve got a story where everything all works out without really any work done from the characters. Couple in with that an immigration that is way too quick and easy, and you’ve got a book that’s just on the wrong side of realistic.

Uniqueness: 4/5

Every hockey book is going to be at least a little bit similar, so it’s important to look for details you don’t see in other stories. Here, we’ve got our focus on the ECHL, which goes against the common “top in their sport” theme of sports books. The characters have personalities that you don’t come by in many books, especially Lane. Some of the plot points are pretty common in other books, but there’s only so many ways you can write a romance book.

Trope Integration: 2/5

I love the tropes that we see in this book; however, they are criminally under-utilized. We’ve got a sizable age gap, where one character is in his 30s and another can’t even legally drink, but besides a couple ‘old man’ jokes, it doesn’t really play into the plot at all. They’re both on rival teams, but even the rivalry itself isn’t a factor in the romance. We’ve got traumatized pasts and potentially homophobic parents that don’t impact the relationship and are hardly visible in the characters. They are used as talking points more than anything else, but at least they exist in the story at all.

General enjoyment: 4/5

This book isn’t going to change the world, and that’s okay. I love some of the one-liners, especially the ones we get out of Lane. This book is upfront about what it is and unapologetic. At some points I found the humor to be a bit repetitive, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t good. I have read this book one time before, and I definitely don’t regret reading it again.

Juvia being unable to function outside of Gray is the main reason I don't ship gruvia. The fact that she let herself sit in the rain for so long she became sick showed how unhealthy her love and devotion to Gray is. Imagine how she'd be if he died. Also she treats him like a god or something, and that's not a good basis for a relationship, no matter from which character's point of view you look at it.

Juvia's character development breaks my heart. It truly does. She's such a wonderful character and to see her reduced to just a love interest is so disappointing. Especially when Gray's actions bring the rain back. It's also the main reason I don't ship Gruvia, either.

I do want to recommend this fic for all of those who want to see a wonderful Juvia character development. It is a Juvia/Lyon end-game, but her growth just warms my heart, and I have yet to find another fic that I've fallen in love with as much as this one when it comes to her character. • The Legend of Zelda quotes were painstakingly hand chosen with love! I had that and the Hercules script pinned in my tabs for 2 months lol and I had like 3 docs separate to keep everything in order! And fun fact: their mostly in order of how they appear in the game, meaning they follow the actual game chronologically! ^^

OF COURSE! @bunnwich was the one who motivated and inspired me to write this. I'd never written fanfic before this, just stuff for OCs. It was really something!

You can blame a certain Youtuber for the 'Pause" jokes. It's literally a part of my daily vocab and I woudln't be me if I didn't put my humor, memes, and inside jokes into the writing. (After all, I wrote it with the mindset that only Bun would read it ^^). I'm glad you share my silly humor!

The pairs for the PE part were actually chosen somewhat carefully by me! I tried to think based on character relationships, personal stories and clubs, which 1st years and second years would actually want to pair up with each other!

Yume's and Kalim's relationship is important to me. I'd love to explore it more because there are more layers to it!

I took care writing Kalim! I wanted to show his growth and his reflection after chapter 4. Sometimes I feel people write him a certain way. I don't think he's naive about things as people always think he is. Especially when it comes to people's emotions. The fact that he wasn't able to see through Jamil's lies isn't a fault on Kalim, Jamil is just that good of a liar/ that good at masking his true feelings. but I'm rambling.

Meme voice: I don't care for Azul. (Yet there are aspects of his character that foil Yume's so interestingly.)

Idia is notorious for saying shit bluntly and without thinking about it, I feel because he doesn't think about how someone could intemperate his words. He knows what he means so he thinks automatically that the other person should too. Bc its "logical" thinking. (lets just say he's not a reliable narrator)

I got to explore lots of interesting things with Yume here, and I'm glad it impacted you so much! Making people feel the intended emotions, or any really is high praise! It affected me as well when I wrote it because...well like you said it can hit close to home for some people.
